I totally agree about not being taken seriously in some situations. It's no fun!

I'm 5'2 and people always think I'm about 12 or 13. I don't mind being carded at all, I just hate it when everyone in the group (who are usually younger than me) get a quick glance at the id and mine is scrutinized.

I also seem to be not taken seriously, like if I have to complain to the manager about something or just ask for sales help. Its just assumed that I am an annoying kid with no money. Does that happen to anyone else??

This hasn't happened to me recently, but my sophomore year in college (7 years ago), I went to see a movie with a couple of my friends, and the ticket agent asked me how old I was. I said "19," and she gave this awkward laugh. Then my friend said, "wait, this is a PG-13 movie, why were you carding her?" And she admitted that she had thought that I might be eligible for a child's discount ticket.

It happened to me again later that summer too - some lady at a buffet seemed to think I was trying to get in under the kids eat free policy. She gave me a very gruff "How old are you?" and when I said 19, got all embarrassed about asking.

I usually head off comments about my height with pre-emptive short jokes. Like "Make a comment about my height, and I'll stand on tiptoe and bite you in the knee." Or "Say a word about my height and I'll reach up and untie your shoelaces." That usually makes people laugh and also realize that I'm aware I'm short, and comfortable with that fact.

Oh, and the best part of being short - I can curl up and be completely comfortable in a coach airplane seat.

Good answer. I either get that people think I'm taller than 5' (its the hair and the shoes) or that I'm really short (I hadn't noticed!). Either way, it doesn't bother me - I'm used to it.

Whenever someone makes a comment on my height I just tell them I'm not short and fat I'm just undertall for my weight!

We had a dress down day at work to get some tidying up done and someone I work with had never seen me without heels before. He came up with a good comment though.

He told me I must have been really good as a kid because I got so many pats on my head I couldn't grow any taller!

Funny story.

My height was "made fun of" this weekend. My boyfriends parents have two dogs, and one of them was acting up while I was visiting, so the gate came out and he was put in the hallway. Well, when I was going to leave...jokes were made taht I would definitely be unable to get over the gate without taking it down...i proved i could though!

I go to a church with a lot of kids. One by one, they line up beside me every Sunday to measure up to see if they've passed me by! I guess I've become their measuring stick! They always remember the day that they passed little Kay!

One of the nurses I work with is pretty tall and has a 8-year old son who has just passed me. I know his mom and dad are tall, but PLEASE!!

People often make comments about my height and sometimes it is funny and we have a good laugh. One lady that I made friends with made a comment that I was so short. She turned around and asked the lady in line in back of her if she thought I was short. Then we all laughed when she saw that the lady in back of her was much shorter than me.
I sometimes say that when all the short people get togehter, I am the tallest one.
My daughter is dating a tall midget and he is very nice. Once we had to move furnature together and I couldn't help myself. I started singing a munchkin song. My daughter is about 5ft 5 and I am 5 ft and so is her boyfriend. We had a good laugh and her boyfriend thought it was great that I was joking like that.

My cousin kid me sometimes on my height. Nothing bad, just us having fun. She's a year younger than me and about 5'10" I believe and her brother is over 6'. I'm 5'3". I think I'm in the line of the second shortest throughout my family. I share the 5'3" with a couple of other women in my family, but the shortest is 5'0", my aunt.

I'm 5'2 ... well, I always THOUGHT I was 5'2" until this last physical when the nurse said I'm 5'3"???

I hated it when I was a kid. But my dad taught me to make tall jokes whenever anyone called me shorty or teased me.

When I was in high school I had a friend who was about 6'4". He called me stretch. I called him shorty.

Mostly, I don't mind my height (except when trying to reach things on the top shelves). I once wore heels, but don't much now -- my back and hips can't take it. (I did something evil to the ligaments that connect my spine to my hips once, and heels have been challenging ever since). I never did wear them to make me taller; I wore them b/c I liked the shoe...

My husband used to say that I was "no bigger than a minute," and it was clear that this was a very GOOD thing.

I like my height (and when I'm back to normal size, I'll like that too). I sew and knit, and smaller bodies need less fabric (which equals less yarn) to complete garments. When you make them for yourself, that means they cost less (or you can afford to use nicer stuff).

I'm also rarely cramped in places like busses and planes where tall folk suffer.

As I used to tell folks when I was in jr. high: the best things come in small packages. That's us ladies!

Don't let them get you down. Be proud! be strong.. give them grief for being tall if they give you grief for being small.

My height doesn't bother me at all and not many people really take notice. I am 5'2" and most times I wear heels, not because of my height but because I like the shoe. I am the oldest and shortest of my mother's three children. My brother is over 6' and my sister is about 5'6", give or take an inch. Most of the people I've met, so far, in my family are not that tall. Among my friends, I am the shortest but they are not that much taller where I would stand out in the crowd. And when they don't wear heels and I do, I am their height or taller. I love my height and never had a problem with! I do get carded alot, but it's because I look young for my age (30). I have been mistaken for a student on several occassions because of my youthful appearance. The children of today are growing rapidly and are just big for their age. I don't know what's in the food or water that they are eating because even elementary school students are very tall for their age. Look on the bright side, you never have to worry about finding pants that are long enough and if they are too long you can get them tailored! We can fit in places that tall people are too big for! And it just seems more romantic looking up into the eyes of a taller man.

HA HA, that is so funny you say that! I DO get noticed for my height, and I don't think that I am that short. I am 5'2", many people will say "your just a little thing". And it is annoying. My 11 year old daughter is so close to my height that I also wear heals EVERYWHERE!

Great post...

My boy is shortish too, about 5'7" (average height for men is like 5'10", I read somewhere). So he is a my size man.

My dad pats me on the head all the time, and I mean he's my dad so it's not so bad, but when anyone else does that (a couple of my teammates from junior league bowling when I was in high school) it's just sooo patronizing!

I am a counselor at an elementary school and I am often lost in the kid crowd.

When I first started I was called into the principal’s office when a parent looked into my office and only saw me on the computer. The parent went to the office to complain that a child was left alone in my office. We both had a laugh at the parent's worry.

My boyfriend is 6'2" and I'm 5'2". At first this was awkward but through the years (seven of them) we have grown accustomed to our height differences.

my problem is with the excess weigh people dont notice my height(or the lack of it)...they notice my diameter
the problem is i think that every pound shows on a shorter frame

but on the plus side...i look younger than all my friends.... and i love it!!!

I've been reading these posts and chuckling to myself because I certainly can relate to every one of them! I'm usually the shortest one in the crowd (5' even) so it's fun to hear about others in the same boat. There really are quite a few of us, we're just not all together at the same time!

I think I still have this mindset of being one of the taller girls when I was in the 5th grade. So, sometimes I forget my height...until I see pictures..or am reminded of my petiteness when standing besides 6'+ giants...or when I'm dancing with some guy that dips in a way too exagerated manner when doing a comb-over or turn. That's when I remember how short I am...

I'm short - can't do anything about it, but slim down, wear heels, stand tall, and take my calcium (so as avoid getting shorter as I age).

But I think one day, an unlucky guy is gonna pat me on my head on a day I'm PMS-ing....I'm already feeling bad about my potential reaction on that day when I'm lacking patience (but seriously, when is patting a person, who's older than 5 years old, okay?).

Everyone notices my height, I'm 4'11" and am usually with tall people. It used to bother me but doesn't anymore. It makes me feel good when people think I am younger and don't believe when I tell them I am 33.

I just went to South Beach with my sister and friend for my sister's 30th. While at a bar i was the only one carded and I am the oldest of the 3....

My friends just mostly joke about it (I'm around 5'1", 5'2"), and all of my family is short, too. Sometimes it throws my 'net friends for a loop when we hang out because I'll be much shorter than they expect.

Though as for mistaken age, I was never carded when trying to buy alcohol in Canada but my 6' something friend from Australia always was.

"How come they're not carding YOU? You're like a head and a half shorter than me!"

I noticed my height the most when I went home for Thanksgiving break. My "baby" brother who is 13 is taller than me and loves to show me that his feet are now almost twice as big as mine!! I remember changing his diapers! Wow did I feel small!

I'm 5'0 too and have constantly gotten it over the years. It used to bug me alot, but at 36 though, I'm okay with people walking up and thinking I'm one of the students when I pick up my son or carding me when we are out to dinner. My son's in 8 and in third grade and already most of his friends are taller than me and most have bigger shoes.

EVERYONE notices. I'm 5 ft, my husband is 6'3", my 13 year old daughter is 5'6', my 12 year old son is 4'8". When we grocery shop, the cashiers always give say hello and give the change to my daughter. Then I speak up and say "hello I'm the mom." emoticon

yes I always get jokes about how short I am. It's sort of sad when 10 year old girls are my size.

Yeah, my 12 year old stepdaughter is almost as tall as me. When she was younger, people used to think she was my daughter. Now they think we're sisters.

The best thing about being short is that everyone assume the you are younger. In a few years you'll really appreciate this !!

One positive thing to outshine the drawbacks! emoticon

I'm currently taking an education course and I have to do classroom observation and I did mine at a middle school. in the middle of a class period I went to the office to see the assistant principal about where I was supposed to go, and the secretary turned around an shouted "what are you doing out of class!!" at me. I quickly pointed out my bright yellow "visitor" badge, and explained that I'm a 22 year old college student, not a 12 year old middle school student! (I'm 5'2")

The only people who DON'T notice how short I am are people who are shorter than I am. And I have relatives in my family and my husband's who are shorter. My cousin and my niece are both 4'8". I feel like a giant next to them.

I'm usually sitting down at my desk when people come into my office. When I come around the desk I can see their eyes sizing me up.

Yes, people always notice.Sometimes they aren't very subtle about it either. My husband says that I am too sensitive. I am just really tired of people telling me that I am short or like I didn't know that I am.

This thread reminds me of a funny story. I was going out to visit my friend and she was trying to get her 7 year old daughter to guess who was coming to visit by giving her clues. The clue that worked? She's short!

I've also had people mistake me for a younger person. The worst was once I was subbing in an elementary school and went to buy lunch and the cafeteria worker asked if I was a student. Oh yeah, and I got a kiddie menu once when I went out to dinner with my husband and stepdaughter. I guess I'll enjoy looking youthful as I get older. For now though, no one would guess I'm 29!

I'm 5'2", so it's not TOO bad in most situations.

However, all my friends are REALLY TALL, so when I hang out with them, I'm definitely "the short girl". Honestly, it doesn't bother me as much as being "the fat girl"!

Yes, indeed! Everyone notices my height (or lack thereof!). I have just learned to go with it and make jokes about it. I mean, what are you going to do about it? You can either choose to be miserable about something you can not change or have fun with it.

I am a 41 year-old single and 4'7" or 4-8" tall (THERE'S an oxymoron! LOL!). You'd better believe people notice me...about 8 years ago, an elementary school bus driver tried to get me to "jump aboard". When I was on a cruise about 5-6 years ago, I almost got kicked out of the casino because they didn't believe I was over 18! I've also been "busted" by truancy cops who mistakenly thought I was skipping school.

See, those are funny short stories. Have lots more, too. You gotta be positive and turn it around.

As for heels, well, I can't wear them because of ankle problems, and I'm also afraid of heights! LOL!

Have a great day, shorties!

But, yeah i asked my boyfriend what one of the first things he noticed about me when we first met and he's like "how short you are". It's not that big of a deal be proud of your lack of height! emoticon

Okay, so I have a question for all petite gals...Does everyone notice your height first BEFORE anything else about you? Is that the only way people tend to describe you? I am getting so tired of it..it seems as though that is the first thing people say, you are so short. I hate it, I feel like I am not normal or something! Anyone else feel the same. It is so bad that I always wear heels just to feel normal! My heels are glued to my feet, even if I am in great pain, if I am not at home- you bet I am wearing my high heels. I had to get that off my chest! Thanks ladies. emoticon
