I eat around 1200 cal a day and I burned around 300 calories every day (7 days) and I'm losing 1/2 lb a week. I'm happy with that because I cannot eat less than what I eat. I think for our height, 1200 calories is not starvation. And for our height, a 1/2 lb loss shows in our body. Even 3 lbs is like a dress size for me.

In the beginning I used to weight what I ate, but now I know how much something weighs just by looking at it. I track every bite I eat using an itouch app called Lose It!! It's free and it's very handy!! It really makes me stay on track!

Connie- I can see why you may think it's wrong, but I've been weight training for a little over an hour a day and doing between 30-40 minutes of cardio afterwards and I've been averaging anywhere between 500 and 700 calories per workout. I find if I weight train first, I burn a lot more calories during my cardio afterward. But usually if I just do cardio for 30 minutes, I burn somewhere around 250.

Are you sure your heart rate monitor is right? I'm 5'3" and I when I do 30 minutes of sprints & jogging, I burn about 200 calories. When I used to do spin classes for an hour, I burned about 360-400 and I was drenched.

Sarahann- I've never thought of it that way but you're right.... Two sticks of butter off my butt is actually great! :)

Lynn- Thank you for playing Jillian and for being very real with me. I appreciate it! I've been logging my calories for a week and a half and staying around 1200. I'm consuming lean proteins like cod and chicken, leafy greens, roasted vegetables, plenty of fresh fruits, 2 servings of whole grains a day, and good fats like almonds and olive oil in moderation. I wont even have a "cheat" piece of chocolate, although I will have 1 packet of crystal light and about two splendas a day. I'm also conscious of my sodium. Admittedly, my biggest problem is drinking water....

But you're right I don't weigh my foods and sometimes I "guesstimate" portions, so maybe some extra calories have been sneaking in. I'm going to monitor that this week and stay around 1200 unless the scale stops moving! Thank you all for your help.

I agree with most and say log every nibble and piece of gum you have for a week and see how things go. Then make little tweeks to your food from there. But 1-2 pounds is great! We are all 5'3" and under so this isn't the easiest for us because of height and any other gentics getting in our way. I'm honestly happy when I lose half a pound during a week (I mean metaphorically speaking that is like 2 sticks of butter - yuck) Keep up the great work, and keep posting!

Let me play Jillian Please
I checked your page and 1st question is do you weigh and log your food? You know that somepeople misguess by 50%. Don't poop poop me and hear me out. Some people call working out going for a walk at 2.5 on incline and others are dripping wet. You see those biggest losers, they are dripping wet. Next I can say my self that most of the time I eat pretty good and I use to say "why can't I lose these pounds?" I watched some one cook, bake, frost a cake for her daughters birthday and buy the time we went to eat I thought "look missy don't tell me about only eating 18 points for the day. She stood there and ate 18 points just fixing the cake and finish setting up. I wanted to scream get your fingers out of your mouth. For 1 week log everything. The other thing is what are you eating? I can gain 5 pounds from 1 can of soup. I pee it off the next day but it is still a shock. Now are you eating food or chemicals? Enough of that? Maybe you are eating to little. I take 1 day during the week and up my calories. I am feeling fat right now because I have been replacing food calories with sugar. Stop laughing we all do it. You know when you eat ice cream for dinner.
Now I did hear once about the biggest guys on biggest loser working out like hell and I am going to guess that it is everyother day they might be on 500 calories. I think your body has to be super low in calories 3 days in a row to fall into starvation. I would really have to see what you are eating to give you a real answer. The other thing is that when you get closer to goal it gets really hard. Your body doesn't like change. It can stand some change but now you are asking for really drastic change. This is like being on a budget and saying you have 100$ a week to spend on new clothes or whatever. You are getting to the point that your budget is now 10$ heading towards 5. So what I am saying is that 100 to 90 or 85 may be a change 15 to 10 is a bigger change. I face book with Hellen and she is in the low 130's because it doesn't take to much work to stay there.
Let me now how food logging goes if that helps.
Lynn

The biggest loser has medical staff and they are working out 8-10 hours a day with very strict eating, I'd be posting huge numbers if I was burning 5000+ calories a day!

Thank you both for responding!

LFLFLPLP- you're right about one pound being a good rate. I guess it's just so frustrating because I worked so hard and after seeing the huge weight losses on the biggest loser (!) I was hoping for a larger number. I gotta remember that I'm not that big to begin with. Thanks for the link to the calorie requirements, it looks like I need to be eating a bit more if I'm going to work out so hard.

According to www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_ca
lc
ulator.htm
this site, and the numbers you gave, it puts you at 1641 for fat loss. That was with me putting in that you workout every day (did not select intense) because there wasn't an option for 6 days. You might want to put them in yourself and change the exercise level if you need to though. My guess though would be that you are eating too few calories. However, sometimes you need to give things more than a week. Also, a pound a week is a good number to lose and make sure you aren't eating away muscle. The lower your weight, the lower amount of loss you can expect in a week. I would try to keep it between losing 1-2 pounds a week. Don't shoot for much more than that.

probably. When you put in your cardio work outs, it will tell you if you are not eating enough for your calorie burn. click on the link it provides you. Put in the current weight, goal weight, and estimate how many calories a week you are burning and it will recalculate your calorie range needed.

I started at the 1242 on the low end and when it bumped me up higher for calorie output, I found it really hard to get to 1330 all the time.

When I plateaued, then I increased the calories and I started to lose again.

Hi everyone! I'm only 5'0" and around 20 pounds overweight. I've been following a nutrition and fitness plan of consuming about 1200 calories a day and working out six days a week with 30 minutes of cardio and some mixed strength training. My heart rate monitor says I'm burning around 700 calories a workout. Do you think I need to bump up my calorie intake? I've only lost 1 pound in my first week and I don't know if it's because my muscles are retaining water or if my body is going into starvation mode......Thanks everyone for your help
