I belong to the Lifetime gym where I had the test done that figures your RMR. It is called the Exersmart system by New Leaf. It involved having a mask put over my face and relax. It measured the amount of 02 that I was breathing. Not sure exactly (I was told but have forgotten) how it works. According to the results I am suppose to eat 1338cal.to sustain life. I am pretty active so according to the results I really should be taking in 1873cal
To me that is a bit much. I am only 5'0 and weigh 98 lbs. I have settled on between 1250-1500cal. The days that I work out I'll eat a little more. Basically I like to range around 1300. Hope this helps.

I actually went to the local hospital and had a breathing test done. It only took about 10 minutes and then I met with a dietitian for about 40 minutes. It helped enormously but it was a little expensive, $40 for the test and extra for the consultation. However, I'd been extremely discouraged and frustrated. After talking with her, I felt a million times better and was completely refocused. I also found out things that I was doing completely wrong that were preventing me from losing any weight at all.

I don't know where you live, but my doctor gave me the referral. The websites are good, but I really needed more help than that. If you feel the same, I'd start with your doctor or check with the hospital.

you can try this link also:

www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calrmr.htm

this site is also good for giving you average calories to eat based on height/weight/exercise level:
www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_ca
lc
ulator.htm

on the last link you can also work out a calorie zig-zag which will cycle your calories daily (do it in conjunction with exercise - higher cal days on higher workout days) and this will help to keep your body guessing and your metabolism running high.

Laurie,

How did you find your resting metabolism? I've wanted to do that for ever but I haven't found anyone who does it.

I would seriously recommend finding out your resting metabolism. I just had mine done and was completely shocked at how high it was. I'd been starving myself and wasn't losing any weight because of it. I'm still having trouble getting my calories up to the right level, but I'm doing better with my protein and have seen results already.

I think you can go to some websites and get a general idea of what your RMR is. Then you can decide how many calories you need per day to continue losing.

Congrats on your success!!

I am also an avid beleiver that no matter how short you are you should not go below 1200 cal's per day (your body needs those calories just to do it's day to day job of keeping you alive!!)

As you are also starting the C25K I'd recommend even upping those cals consumed so your overall cal intake is no less than 1200.

I've been cycling anywhere between 1200-1700 - it may seem hard but the more you eat the more you will lose as you begin to exercise as well - your body needs to continue working on it's 1200 cal's a day and feed the muscles you are working out on too.....plus there is the calories expended during your exercise also.....

hope I've not confused you too much here - it's just a matter of finding your range and tweaking it until it is perfect - just remember that your body will get used to what you do and how much you eat and slow your metabolism down accordingly so eventually you will stop losing, also if you eat too little you will enter starvation mode - NOT a good idea!!

Welcome and you are making GREAT progress! Calories are so sensitive to everything you do! Where you get the calories and of course the amount exercise you get. Many people believe you should never drop below 1200 calories. I am one of them. :) I have had great progress with keeping between 1200-1550, but I do not get a ton of cardio in so you may need even more. I know that seems CRAZY, but just play with it a big.
