NaxoS (Greek Island) wiki: is a Greek island, the largest island (429 km2 (166 sq mi)) in the Cyclades island group in the Aegean.
One legend has it that in the Heroic Age before the Trojan War, Theseus abandoned the princess Ariadne of Crete on this island after she helped him kill the Minotaur and escape from the Labyrinth. Dionysus (god of wine, festivities, and the primal energy of life) who was the protector of the island, met Ariadne and fell in love with her. But eventually Ariadne, unable to bear her separation from Theseus, either killed herself (according to the Athenians), or ascended to heaven (as the older versions had it).

EphratA, WA

I know there's a town in PA named Ephrata, but I chose this one in WA, located east of the mountains (dry side) in east central WA.

Historically, the settlement of Ephrata is quite recent. There was no known settlement until 1886, just three years before Washington attained statehood. The horse rancher Frank Beezley was the first to settle near the natural springs, thus the area was known as Beezley Springs. As the climate and topography were not promising to settlement, the entire region remained sparsely populated until several federal congressional actions, including the Northern Pacific Land Grant Act, the Homestead Act, and Desert Claims Act, encouraged the settlement of this semi-arid desert.

It is generally believed that the city was named Ephrata by a man who worked for the Great Northern Railway. The name Ephrata is derived from a biblical description of an orchard in the middle of the desert. It is also the ancient name for the town of Bethlehem.

YuccA, AZ

Yucca is an unincorporated community in Mohave County, Arizona, United States, located along Interstate 40. Yucca has a hot desert climate with brutally hot summers and cool winters. In summer, it is normal to record temperatures above 110 °F for days on end, while in winter it is very mild with average minimum temperatures in the winter are usually 30 to 45 °F.

Yucca started as an order office and water fill station for Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (affiliated with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway) in the 1880s. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces purchased 2,284 acres of land and developed the Yucca Army Airfield for training pilots. In 1954 the air base was purchased by Ford Motor Company and along with additional land, was turned into the Arizona Proving Ground comprising nearly 4,000 acres. Chrysler purchased the proving grounds in November 2007. from Ford

Tee hee, you two must have been typing at the same time, so I'll take Kaiserslauten for 200, Alex.

New BerN, NC

New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants. The new colonists named the settlement after Bern, the capital of Switzerland and hometown of their leader Christoph von Graffenried.

New Bern served as the capital of the North Carolina colonial government, then briefly as the state capital. After the American Revolution, New Bern became wealthy and quickly developed a rich cultural life. New Bern was renowned for its Masonic Temple and Athens Theater. These are both still very active today.

AroostooK (county in Maine)

The Aroostook War (sometimes called the Pork and Beans War) was a confrontation in 1838–1839 between the United States and British governments over the international boundary between the British colony of New Brunswick and the US state of Maine. Top level diplomats from the US and Britain met in Washington and forged a peaceful compromise, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842, which fixed the permanent border. The term "war" was rhetorical; local militia units were called out but never engaged in combat. The event is best described as an international incident.

El DoradO, KS

I remember my dad driving us through El Dorado, though I don't personally recall much about it, just that we were there.

In 1877, the Florence, El Dorado, and Walnut Valley Railroad Company built a branch line from Florence to El Dorado; in 1881 it was extended to Douglass, and later to Arkansas City.

In 1943, German and Italian prisoners of World War II were brought to Kansas and other Midwest states as a means of solving the labor shortage caused by American men serving in the war effort. Large internment camps were established in Kansas: Camp Concordia, Camp Funston (at Fort Riley), Camp Phillips (at Salina under Fort Riley). Fort Riley established 12 smaller branch camps, including El Dorado.

On June 10, 1958, a tornado hit El Dorado and killed 13 people.

RoncevertE (WV) is a small town in Greenbrier county, WV. I went to many WV state fairs there.

Wiki: Ronceverte is a proud railroad town, a part of the C&O tracklines that connected Pocahontas County to Hinton, and to Clifton Forge, Virginia. Ronceverte was part of the "Gravel Girtie" line where Hinton-based train cars were sent to the limestone quarry at Fort Spring and loaded with crushed lime. This cargo was sent to Clifton Forge where it fluxed in the large furnaces.

ExeteR, England

Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain. Exeter Cathedral, founded in the early 12th century, became Anglican at the time of the 16th-century Reformation.

Despite the long, grand history in the Wiki writeup, Exeter is known to me as the home of the UK Met Office. I've never been there myself, but several of my colleagues have.

Sandy Spring, Maryland is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The community was founded by Quakers who arrived in the early 18th century searching for land where they could grow tobacco and corn. The Quakers built their meeting house in 1817 near a fresh-water spring which gave its name to the community.

That's quite a history lesson, Claire!

AliquippA, PA

Aliquippa was founded by the merger of three towns: Aliquippa, Woodlawn, and New Sheffield. There is no evidence connecting the Seneca Queen Alliquippa with the location of the borough. This was one of several Indian names selected arbitrarily by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad in 1878 for stations along the route. Aliquippa is best known as the location of a productive steel mill that the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company constructed there along the Ohio River beginning in 1905. Employment at the facility sustained a population of 27,023 in 1940. The mill closed during the collapse of the steel industry during the 1980s.

ElbA (Italy) wiki: Elba is a Mediterranean island in Tuscany, Italy.

Following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, French emperor Napoleon I was exiled to Elba after his forced abdication in 1814 and arrived at Portoferraio on May 3, 1814 to begin his exile there. He was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men. Although he was nominally sovereign of Elba, the island was patrolled by the British Royal Navy.

During the months Napoleon stayed on the island, he carried out a series of economic and social reforms to improve the quality of life, partly to pass the time and partly out of a genuine concern for the well-being of the islanders. Napoleon stayed on Elba for 300 days. He returned to France on February 26, 1815 for the Hundred Days. After his defeat at Waterloo he was subsequently exiled again, this time to the barren and isolated South Atlantic island of Saint Helena.

IstanbuL (turkey) wiki: Founded as Byzantium, Istanbul developed to become one of the most significant cities in history. For nearly sixteen centuries following its reestablishment as Constantinople in 330 AD, it served as the capital of four empires: the Roman Empire (330–395), the Byzantine Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). It was instrumental in the advancement of Christianity during Roman and Byzantine times, before the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453 and transformed it into an Islamic stronghold and the seat of the last caliphate.

Delphi, Greece

Delphi is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece.... In myths dating to the classical period of Ancient Greece (510-323 BC), the site of Delphi was believed to be determined by Zeus when he sought to find the center of his "Grandmother Earth" (Ge, Gaea, or Gaia). He sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities, and the path of the eagles crossed over Delphi where the omphalos, or navel of Gaia was found.

YaltA (Ukraine) wiki: Yalta is a resort city in Crimea, southern Ukraine, on the north coast of the Black Sea.
During the 20th century Yalta was the principal holiday resort of the Soviet Union. In 1920, Vladimir Lenin issued a decree "On the Use of Crimea for the Medical Treatment of the Working People" which endorsed the region's transformation from a fairly exclusive resort area into a recreation facility for tired proletarians. Numerous workers' sanatoria were constructed in and around Yalta. There were, in fact, few other places that Soviet citizens could come for a seaside holiday, as foreign travel was forbidden to all but a handful. The Soviet elite also came to Yalta; the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin used the Massandra Palace as his summer residence.

The town came to worldwide attention in 1945 when the Yalta Conference between the "Big Three" powers - the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom - was held at the Livadia Palace.

Just because I have a friend there on an extended vacation. He had to have his beautiful, old husky put down just before he left, because she had stopped eating and couldn't even stand anymore. Animals seem to know when it's time.

I used to love Abilene when we'd drive through on trips between Colorado and my parents' house in Mississippi (too poor to fly in those days).

AthabascA, Alberta, Canada

Unlike many other towns in Alberta, Athabasca predates the railway. It was the terminus of the Edmonton to Athabasca Landing trail. Athabasca lies on a southern protrusion of the Athabasca River. During the fur trade era, when rivers were the principal means of transportation, the Athabasca–Edmonton trail connected two different drainage basins. The Athabasca River flows north and is part of the Mackenzie River watershed, which leads to the Arctic Ocean. Edmonton lies across a height-of-land on the North Saskatchewan River in the Nelson River drainage basin, which empties into Hudson Bay. Edmonton was in Rupert's Land but not Athabasca. The trail allowed goods to be portaged back and forth between river systems.

Athabasca's motto: Gateway to the Great New North

GlückstadT, Germany

Glückstadt is a town in the Steinburg district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is located on the right bank of the Lower Elbe...and is part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

Glückstadt was founded in 1617 on the marsh lands along the Elbe by the Duke of Holstein, King Christian IV of Denmark, who had levees and fortifications built as well as a ducal residence. Its name translates to English literally as "Luck City" or "Fortune City". As Christian IV promised the settlers tax exemption and freedom of religion, Glückstadt soon became an important trading centre, intended to compete with the Imperial city of Hamburg, located upstream on the Elbe.

ViborG, Denmark

Taking a trip outside Russia. I was planning to use Vyborg, Russia, until I thought about Viborg, Denmark, where DH and I want to go this summer for a walking festival.

Viborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark, with Viking settlements dating back to the late 8th century. Its central location gave the city great strategic importance, in political and religious matters, during the Middle Ages. A motte-and-bailey-type castle was once located in the city. Viborg takes its name from a combination of two words: Wii, meaning a holy place, and berg, meaning a hill.

Interesting tour we are taking through Russia. Seems we have competing claims.

DerbenT, Russia

Derbent is known to the Arabs as Bāb al Abwab ("Gate of Gates") and to the Turks as Demirkapı ("Iron Gate"). It is a city in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located on the Caspian Sea, north of the Azerbaijani border. It is the southernmost city in Russia.

Derbent occupies the very narrow, but the primary, gateway crossing between the Eurasian steppes to the north and the Middle East to the south, through a very narrow coastal crossing between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. Often identified with the legendary Gates of Alexander, Derbent claims to be the oldest city in Russia (8th century BCE).

The modern town is located in an area where several villages stood in the past. In the 1950s–1960s, two closed military communities were formed in this area. Neu-IsenburG, Germany

Wiki: Neu-Isenburg was founded on 24 July 1699 as a town of exiles by Huguenots, French Protestants who had had to flee their homeland after the Edict of Nantes was revoked. Their new landlord, Count Johann Philipp von Isenburg-Offenbach, guaranteed them safety, the free use of the French language and religious freedom. He gave them leave to settle in the Wildbann Dreieich, an old royal hunting forest, in the place where in the Middle Ages the pilgrimage chapel Zum Heiligen Kreuz (“To the Holy Cross”) once stood. By way of thanks to the Count, the town was named Neu-Isenburg after him.

Dunn LorinG, VA

Was surprised to see Dunn Loring in a list of Virginia towns, since I think of it as just as stop on the Metro. Here's what Wiki says about it:

Dunn Loring is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia...population was 8,803 at the 2010 census. Dunn Loring, Virginia, is the earliest platted subdivision in Fairfax County and possibly the Commonwealth of Virginia, was founded in 1886.

Cognac, NOW we're talkin'!

SmithfielD, VA

Wiki: The town is most famous for the curing and production of the Smithfield ham. The Virginia General Assembly passed a statute defining "Smithfield ham" by law in 1926, with one of the requirements that it be processed within the town limits.

Wonder if that'll still be true now that the Chinese have bought Smithfield?

Exeter is also where the UK Met Office is located with all my UK colleagues.

RacheL, NV

Originally called "Sandy" because of its long expanse of sand, Rachel is the youngest town in Nevada and is considered the"UFO Capital of the World." The town was named after Rachel Jones, the first child born in the community founded by D.C. Day in 1978.

AnchoragE, AK

I love visiting Anchorage, even in winter ;-) One of my favorite restaurants (Simon and Seyfort's) is there.

Anchorage is the northernmost city in the United States with more than 100,000 residents and the largest community in North America north of the 60th parallel.

Cool... literally
AndalusiA (Spain) wiki: The Andalusian autonomous community is officially recognized as a nationality of Spain. The territory is divided into eight provinces: Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga and Seville. Its capital is the city of Seville.

The region has, however, a rich culture and a strong cultural identity. Many cultural phenomena that are seen internationally as distinctively Spanish are largely or entirely Andalusian in origin. These include flamenco, bullfighting, and certain Moorish-influenced architectural styles.

AntarcticA...

...which DH and I cruised to from Tierra del Fuego.

Wiki: Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South Pole. Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches) along the coast and far less inland. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89 °C (−129 °F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Only cold-adapted organisms survive, including many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation where it occurs is tundra.

Earp, California is an unincorporated townsite in San Bernardino County in the Sonoran Desert close to the California/Arizona state line at the Colorado River in Parker Valley.

It was named for famed Old West lawman Wyatt Earp who with his common-law wife, Josephine Sarah Marcus, lived part-time in the area beginning in 1906. Earp staked more than 100 copper and gold mining claims near the base of the Whipple Mountains.[
