My favorite response was another pastor asking how hurt God must be then that we waste the ample wind and sunshine that could be fueling our world WHILE we waste the lives of coal miners with black lung and asthmatic children breathing particulate pollution and subsistence farmers in drought-stricken lands...

Personally, I would say that the Rev. Bryan Fischer is mistaken, because God commanded us to take care of his creation, and burning defiles it. Maybe the Rev. has some church member donors in the burning business, and he wants to make them happy?

He did say that, that he wants to align himself with the poor, with peace, and with care for instead of domination of creation. And then Rev. Bryan Fischer said it hurts God's feelings if we don't burn fossil fuels because we're rejecting his gift. Sigh.

It crossed my mind to wonder whether the new pope, Francis I, with his connection to St. Francis of Assisi, might possibly be a leader re. caring about the animals and the environment.

My sense is that the movement against global warming is growing, but not as fast as the proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere. Part of the problem is that those of us in the rich countries are primarily the ones who are causing the problem (and therefore must modify our lives to cause the solution) but most of the cost of global warming is being paid by the global south. And many of us here consider it more important that we drive a big heavy SUV in case of an accident with another big heavy SUV than that we reduce the desertification that is causing starvation and resource wars on the other side of the planet.

At Sierra Club this evening, our speaker talked about how we can remain strong, flexible, and committed in the face of global warming and the catastrophic upheaval that will ensue, so that we will be able to survive. He said he is hopeful.

I agree. First line of defense is to work on my own consumption and vote with my dollars. Second, as a member of a free society, to petition my government and spread the word to my fellow citizens. And most radically, to organize with the urgency that the lives of our grandchildren depend on it.
