At this point I've become convinced that we need a new Secretary of the Interior, or whatever the Cabinet-level position is called these days. Right now, they're discussing the defense positions; but the environment should be a top priority, and the US should be a world leader!

If we are to go on living together on this Earth, we must all be responsible for it.

I heard, on NPR Michigan Radio this morning, our Michigan governor addressing the Farm Bureau meeting, and stating that he felt the farmers would be pleased to know that the Michigan legislature has altered many of the regulations that are protective of the environment.

Until then, I had not thought of farmers as a group who are against protecting the environment. I had thought farmers went to contour farming and no-till farming to stop erosion and protect the soil, etc. Now, though, I guess the change-over to giant, agri-business feedlot farms and their runoff problems are probably the issue.

So it would seem to me that the more we can get away from eating meat, the better.

Although I grew up in northwest Ohio, and I now live in Michigan, I have lived in 6 states (all east of the Mississippi River). As a kid, I went swimming with my family in Lake Erie, and we appreciated the lake. I do remember when the Cuyahoga River caught on fire at Cleveland. Now, as an adult, I realize much more what a uniquely precious resource our 5 freshwater Great Lakes are. But I'm concerned, too, about coal mining practices that devastate the land and jeopardize the miners, and coal burning that ruins our air, coal ash disposal that fouls the land, chemicals that are routinely disposed of in our water and landfills, leaking gasoline station tanks, auto emissions, and runoff from streets and parking lots that goes into our sewer systems. What a mess we are making of our little green planet. Businesses count costs in dollars, but fail to count the costs in damage to people and the Earth. I believe we need our EPA to protect us and our planet from our industries by regulations that require them to find better ways.

Well, being from northeast Ohio right by the cuyahoga river which would probably still be on fire without it, I most definitely think that the EPA is important! Not to mention this whole fracking fiasco that caused earthquakes up here as well.

I dont't ask or judge anyone's political preference. I do ask for support of worthy causes. There are some in congress that believes that the US could save millions of dollars as well as get the unemployed back to work,if they abolish the EPA. Please research the information on this movement, find out where your senator stands on this issue and respond.

How do you feel about the EPA? How would the environment change if it was abolished? Are you comfortable with your senators position?
