I agree with a lot of statements made here. Dairy is such a touchy subject. My body doesn't digest dairy in the forms of milk, cream or yogurt well. But in ice cream, cheese and in baked goods, it's fine!
We buy dry powdered milk only for baking and that's pretty much the only dairy in our house. I've been drinking almond milk for years with no complications and I LOVE it! So delicious and it goes in almost any recipe without problems.
If you're going to consume dairy, try to get it in its purest form you can afford. We occasionally buy milk from a farmer who produces pasturized non-homogonized milk for my husband when he wants to make some special creation. We never buy the junk milk from the grocery stores.

Hello, I'm new to this team but thought I'd share my experiences with dairy.
When I was pregnant I was warned against consuming too much soy milk because of the plant hormones, so even if dairy is evil there can be issues with the replacements. There is osteoporosis in my family so I make sure I get good calcium in my diet. Personally I can eat cheese and yoghurt but milk is causing some problems for me at the moment. If dairy isn't clean in my opinion it's probably due to the farming techniques that are demanded from such a widespread consumption so like it has already been said, unpasteurized straight from the animal would be best but it's not always an option.
I believe that dairy is fine for most people but it shouldn't be our only source of calcium like the dairy industry would have us believe. I also check the source of the information if the vegan society is saying it they will be understandably be biased one way as would the dairy council.
Interesting thread, it's good to see what others think on the dairy subject.
I eat dairy. I just try to stay away from chemicals added to them. I noticed the other month that Kraft Foods was putting a fungicide in its cheese. I stopped buying that cheese and called up the company and told them I didn't want it in my cheese.
TG, you make some good points. There are a lot of individual differences in what people can tolerate. Some people will also smoke all their lives and never get lung disease. Other people are exposed to a lot of toxic stuff and never get cancer. Since we don't know exactly what foods cause disease in our bodies until we notice symptoms it is important to learn about potential effects of foods. Many people never have any symptoms before they have a heart attack or a stroke. The same is true for some autoimmune diseases and for cancer. I know that eating a low-carb organic and natural food diet will give my body all the healthy nutrients it needs and protect me from many common diseases. Birgit
You know, I have been down this "dairy is evil...wheat is evil...sugar is evil...etc." road and frankly, I've concluded that you have to look at how you feel.
I can eat lots of sugar, and it will make me feel like total crap. I'll crave more, I'll overeat, I'll even get colds and yeast infections if I overdo, so I have really minimized it in my diet.
I can eat lots of wheat products, and I feel a little phlegmy when I do. I might get a little gassier than normal, but beyond that, it's just a mild annoyance. So, I eat wheat products when I'm in the mood.
I can guzzle milk like there is no tomorrow. I can eat yogurts, butter, you name it and not notice a thing. So, I don't worry at all about removing dairy from my diet.
There is no dietary perfection. We don't go to dietary heaven when we get it all exactly right. In fact, there is really a guarantee that, no matter how healthy we eat or how much we exercise, ...there is a 100% chance we'll all be taking a dirt nap someday.
So, I say just go by how you feel, and enjoy! In fact, I stopped keeping food diaries with calories, etc. in them, and exchanged it for a "how I feel" diary. It was much more illuminating. Good luck! :o) TG

It depends, there are varying levels of clean in my opinion. The worst option for me would be ultra-pasteurized (sterilized) and homogenized fat-free milk products from factory-farmed, grain-fed animals. Ultra-pasteurization kills too many beneficial nutrients, homogenization changes the size of fat globules in the milk, possibly affecting the way our body handles it, grain-feeding and factory-farming is unnatural for the animals and affects their health and therefore the milk and nutrients in it. Even pasteurizing (heating at lower temperatures) kills lactase which helps people with lactose intolerance to digest the milk. So the ideal would be whole, non-homogenized, raw milk from animals (cows, goats, sheep) that have been on organically managed pastures. This is expensive and sometimes hard to find. If need be I would settle for non-organic. There is also differences in the genetics of cows which makes some milk (usually from Holstein cows) much harder to tolerate than other milk (often from Jerseys and other breeds). This is just a very short summary. Do your research before giving up milk. and milk products.
