We can't always bring others around, even if it is healthier for them. Just do the best you can, make healthy snacks available and maybe he might be tempted to try them just to see what they are like. If he forgets and brings home his unhealthy snacks, don't make a big deal of it. Tell him you appreciate that he's trying to not tempt you with these and know it wasn't intentional. You could ask him to leave it in his car, or maybe have one place out of sight of the kids where he can keep his preferred snacks and just ask that he not eat them in front of you and the kids (if it's an item that you have a really hard time resisting, I'm sure he'd understand your not wanting it to be in the house). It is his home too, after all. Perhaps by compromising a little bit like this, he may be more willing to accept the changes you are trying to make as well.

The fact that your DH is willing to go along with the changes and is trying to remember to not bring those snacks into the house is wonderful. Many wouldn't even be willing to do that. Sometimes the best thing is to just try to be an example and make healthy choices available, and allow the other adults in our homes to choose for themselves. If we try and force them, it often backfires and they are even more unwilling to make any changes.

If it's to be, it's up to ME.

Can he keep his unhealthy snacks at work or in his vehicle? Maybe try your hand at some clean eating cookies to replace the ones he's snacking on? Check out a few on this link maybe you'll find something everyone can enjoy guilt free :)

All I am not new to this but my problem is my DH

He does not have a weight issue but always wants cookies and junk in the house

He can eat what he wants but I ask him not to have it in the house or the kids and I dont need to know about it

So he definitely helps in that respect but it is the times he forgets that just bugs me

The kids dont have weight issues either and I really want to keep it that way - and I know they get their share of junk at school but most times they make great decisions despite their Dad and his being a cookie monster

How do I get him on board with clean eating ALL the time

He will eat what I prepare and has no issues with fruits and veggies -I just need him on board totally

HELP is yet another frank discussion in order????

Reading this thread makes me want to get back it ... I used to do something similar to this but it didn't have a name and I didn't get it from anyone. It was many moons ago when I went back to school for my bachelor's degree. 4 hour long classes 3 days a week with nothing but vending machine choices or high calorie bad fat meals in the cafeteria. So I started packing a a cooler-ish bag with drinks, portion-controlled fruits and veggies and salads to get me through breakfast on the road, snacks in class, and lunch before hitting the road for my hour ride back home.
I started missing it on my days off so I wound up getting a huge but cute bowl for each person (I had a lot of tots at that time) and each morning I would fill it with healthy snacks that they were allowed to eat any and all of but they had to stay in their own bowl and not filcher from someone else's lol
I think what I need most of all is a list of quick fix snacks that I can take with me to school (I have all summer to plan it out!) ... I might even go back to the bowl for each person during the summer so that they don't steadily eat me out of house and home (granted they are on the athletic though waify side of things). Thanks for posting about this to remind me of what worked before :)

Hi evereryone. I am new to this team but not to Spark. I have cleared out my fridge and got rid of all junk food and have re-filled with fresh produce. I started with Spark again the day before yesterday and already I can see some changes. This is just so encouraging.

Take a step at a time in the right direction - and you will surely arrive.

Hmmm. Maybe I should jump in on this too.

I need to drop 15 lbs, and am struggling with always having "something come up". Ie., restaurants, birthdays, weekends, whatever...

I need the portion control!

I'm really liking it! Feel like I'm eating all the time but my calories don't add up to even 1200.
I will be happy to go to cooler 2 after a week so I can have more fruit. That will taste SO sweet to me!
Every thing I have tried over the years, and believe me I have tried it all, this is the plan that makes me drop some weight, break my plateau, and get back on track.

Can another Cooler Chic slip in here?

I just finished reading Tosca Reno's book, "The Eat Clean Diet Recharged". I was thinking about cooler plan 1, but maybe 2 is a better option for me right now. I was just whining to my DH that my lunch bag is too small, but now that back to school items are out, I might have a shot at finding a better one. Maybe not Nascar, though. LOL!

Thanks for the good ideas!

Peace,
fran

I have honestly not used a dressing recipe...I tried a few in the past but they never really came out knocking my socks off enough to want to use them again.

I use Boathouse Farms yogurt dressings...45 kcals and I think they are really delicious.
Do you have recipes that you have liked? I'm trying to keep the fat grams under control...

I'll have to check that book out!

PS-the mason jar salad idea is cool because you put the dressing on the bottom, and in marinates without making everything soggy.

Try it! It's really cool.

Sounds like your rockin' it since your company left! Glad it's getting easier for you, I know you are so motivated!
I'm still motivated as well and am lowering my calories and being a bit more strict with myself. I want to lose a few more pounds and have some leeway.
My CE mag needs renewed but I have all the books so recipes and inspiration are close at hand.
I can't get over my energy level! Taking lots of beautiful hikes with my dog and I am wearing him out!

It's the Clean Eating Magazine-my alltime most fav read these days. I LOVE their recipes, and they come up with such creative ideas.

Tosca Reno is the founder of the magazine (author of "The Eat Clean Diet", and is also the one behind the cooler concept.

Check out this website that shows you the pages from this current issue...the salads.

Just checking in since it's been a few days-

Still doing my cooler plan-it's working very well as far as motivation for clean eating. This quarter's magazine highlighted fresh salads you could make in mason jars. They were so cool looking, I went out and bought a couple from target and have been layering my salads each day, with the dressing on the bottom. You just shake them when you're ready to eat, and "voila", it's delicious and beautiful! I put everything in there, and have gotten so many comments at work about how tasty and cool they look. Everyone wants to know what I put in there.

Haven't dropped much weight, still and am a little frustrated. Last night my stomach was empty to the point of not being able to sleep very well, yet...the scale reads the same.

I'm just plugging forward "as if".

This week, my cooler is full of:

low fat cottage cheese
fresh homemade guzpacho soup with ezekial bread
Everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-mason jar salads
Homemade crockpot beef stew

lime-watermelon popsicles and chocoperfection bars are my after-hours treats (in moderation, of course).

Hope you are having a good week, sparkbuddy.
Write when you can!

Funny-after our friends left for the weekend, I was thinking "whew", now I can get back on track...and that's when I remembered my brother in law wanted to celebrate his birthday last night at a Mexican Restaurant! Ordinarily, chips and margaritas are on the plan, so it took some laser focus to plan around that, but I did well. I ate a high protein snack before going and just ordered an appetiser with a side of rice...a lime fish cherizo thing and I didn't even finish it.

I had a very healthy day's cooler, and came home to lime/watermelon pops I made last night. They are very light and refreshing.

I was a little discouraged to get on the scale and once again see that the needle hadn't budged. Makes me wonder if hormones are at play here. Who knows. It's weird, but I'm eating great food and feeling well during the day.

ugh. Yesterday was my restaurant day. Mexican food! YUM. I ordered the avacado tostada and didn't eat the shell. Well ok, one bite of it.
Then I ate carrot cake! I made it for my husband and HAD to taste it! right?
Anyway I'm back on track today.

Congratulations!
for 3-4 days there, I could tell that I was losing, because I was hungry at night and I was waking up feeling lighter. I won't weigh right now, because I'm super PMSy and I just had yet another restaurant meal, but I'm excited to be back on track tomorrow.

I wish I didn't find restaurants to be such a drag, but for now, I just find them to drain me of energy. Too much to think about, and worries about having to start over suck the fun out of it.
I want to get better, though. I really do want to learn to enjoy them by making it more about the people and conversation than about the plate.

Packing my cooler up tonight. Here I go!

Doing well here, down 3 lbs.! Wed. will be a week since I started this challenge. I have been going for LONG walks. I just got back from the beach. Gorgeous today!
I actually like eating at restaurants if they offer anything healthy. Some are impossible, especially ethnic. But I enjoy the practice of finding something good on just about any menu. Not clean maybe! But good nuff.
The fair starts here soon so I will have to make sure I eat before I go!!!

Made it through weekend.

Houseguests continue to present challenges to my clean eating streak, as they constantly want to thank us by taking us out to restaurants. I feel like I'm being rude, but I can't think of any other activity I'd rather NOT do right now. Restaurants are just torture for me, and if I'm going to have a salad and something poached or baked, I'd rather not bother spending the money. Ugggh.

Despite huge temptation at an amusement park, I chose a nice garden salad and a cup of fruit vs. gobs of cheesy noodles and sugary treats. Getting better at this each day!

Will be glad when we have house to ourselves again so I can really get on my roll again. Packing my cooler up each day in front of guests was too weird on the weekend, so I'm saving it until they leave again.

How's it going?

A trip to the movies ended up falling into popcorn a little, but then with people in town it's much harder to keep a normal routine...plus, I want to eat well but not make it too weird. It's easy to go overboard sometimes and I want to stay relaxed and flexible.
Overall, good food and moderation. Would like to get back to my cooler, though!

Bought tofu shirataki noodles for the first time. I saw what looked like a great recipe for light shrimp Alfredo using these noodles (40 kcals a bag!), shrimp, laughing cow lite Swiss cheese, broccoli, and a touch of sour cream. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Did you have a good day?

Thank you for the congrats, same to you!
Sounds like you really have it under control. It's super hard learning what to order when out with friends, for sure! It takes much practice. It can be done.
I am doing fantastic! Seems like I'm eating ALL the time, and I like what I'm eating. I'm a good cook so I know how to season simple cuts of meat, fish and chicken to keep it interesting.
This challenge is just the kick I needed, I was beginning to get away from clean eating too often.
Eating right is already giving me AMAZING energy!! I am working out and cleaning my house like a maniac.
Let's keep this up! emoticon

Wow-I was reading your page and you lost 70 lbs??? CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I recently lost 50, but have put on 15 again. Think I'm possibly starting to hit a hormone wall, so it's frustrating to work so hard and not have anything budge.

Today was another winner. Went out to dinner with friends and was dazzled at my ability to keep it together despite feeling that twinge of temptation to fall into the bread basket. They all ordered steak and salmon, I had mine "clean", with sauces on the side and light veggies. They all had chocolate cake...I had a beautiful fruit bowl with a dollop of whipped cream.

The chef did something really interesting. He chopped up a green apple, and doused it with fresh lime juice. My goodness, it was delicious and so different!

I am challenged to keep it together over the weekend. We have friends staying with us, so the cooler thing is a little tough to do when socializing. We are also eating out more than once, and that is alway a little unnerving, but you have to get your head in the right place and I feel pretty motivated.

I was watching Dr. Oz yesterday, and he had a very interesting recipe for a shrimp fettuccini using these Tofu noodles. They are like 40 kcals and without all the carbs-I'm going to give the recipe a try this weekend and see how good it is. I'll let you know.

Did you have a good day today?

I am never hungry while eating this way but I'm never really full either.

Yesterday was a great day! Had my cooler all packed and really stayed even keeled all day with the food choices I had.
I bought some ground turkey to make those meatballs (that will be different), and some smoked salmon to add to my salads, but I had:
2 large fresh salads with chicken, a little tub of cottage cheese, a protein shake, cucumber soup, and ezekial bread. It was plenty, and I felt really full and good most of the day. Even better, I was slightly hungry at the end of the day, which tells me I might actually start dropping a few lbs if I keep this up! Yay!
I feel very encouraged that I can do this.

I am more than happy to check your food diary- I don't actually use the one on sparkpeople because my computer is slow and it takes forever. Truthfully, I have done virtually NOTHING on sparkpeople other than blog for the past year or so, so I probably need to take some time and learn the features. Do I need to "friend" you so you can see my diary?

I made Tosca's breakfast today.
Half quinoa half oatmeal. with a few raisins, cinnamon, flaxseed and almond milk. I put some blueberries in it. And an egg and an egg white. black coffee. I need to get some bee pollen, I ran out and I love it for energy.

I took out a skinless chicken breast and still have some fresh zucchini and fruit I got from the farmers market yesterday. I can use some fruit on my Greek yogurt.
Want to start checking each other's food log to keep us honest?

Okay ELECTRALYTE, it's you and me then!
Let's make a little pact...Let's promise each other to start with a week and show up every day...even if we fall off the wagon (I don't plan to, but as you know...it's always part of the journey!) Of course, I'd like togo all the way to the end, but let's commit to what's easily doable.

I was up last night chopping fresh salads, and my proteins are going to be a container of cottage cheese (love it) and an Edge drink. I liked her meatball recipe, and may make some of those for pack and go later on.

Breakfast was oatmeal with the flax seeds and egg whites with cajun spice and veggies. Man! This breakfast holds me over for like 4-5 hours!! It's great!~ I have my quinoa ready to go too...I'll start mixing it with the oatmeal soon, as I start running low.

Yesterday, I went to bed moderately hungry for the first time in I can't remember. It was a great feeling. Maybe I'm starting to actually burn some fat!!! Yay!

What's in your cooler today?

I am in! I dusted of my Tosca books and am drooling over the recipes. Got my quinoa soaking for a healthy breakfast tomorrow.
Salmon and zucchini for dinner tonight.
I went for a really long walk today.
Thanks! You have inspired me to do this and I am really stoked and motivated! emoticonemoticonemoticon

This is her cooler plan in a nutshell (reference "The Clean Eating Diet", by Tosca Reno
pg 107ish

Get a cooler, fill it with clean options, live out of it daily.

This video on youtube explains it simply, and you can check out others like it to get the gist of what the plan is.

I felt really great from the one day I did this, so I'd like to continue-however, I don't have kids to feed and I travel when I work.

I'm going to do her Cooler#3 plan, which is more of a "get used to clean eating" intro, even though I've been at this a while now.

Like I said before, portion control is just a bear for me, so this might be just the nice little challenge I need to get into a nice habit of eating a little less.

I travel a lot so having a cooler filled with healthy, clean choices and most importantly...PORTIONED choices, can make things easier. I don't want to be obsessing about this all day. You don't have to do a "cooler" if you don't want, but it is about planning your day and being prepared.

So, I bought my cooler (ha ha...Nascar was all they had left at Walmart. I have to laugh) and I have my little containers and I've already started.

I have tons of fresh salad fixings, good dressings, and I'm considering my totable sources of protein...

cottage cheeses, chicken, protein powders, cold salmon...
And, as always, the plan has to be in place for the 3-4pm dip. More on that in a bit...

Are you in? Let's do it!

Tosca Reno is the figurehead behind the whole "Clean Eating" magazine. She's got several books, a website, does speaker engagements, and is on the oxygen channel. She is an ex-figure competetor, and I take some things with a grain of salt, but after having picked up her book I see that she eats for the most part the way I am inspired to...minimal processed food, whole, farmers-market produce, mostly veggies and fruits...but her schtick for weight loss is the diligent pairing of proteins with these other varieties of foods. This is not anything revolutionary in the fitness world, but for some reason I struggle with being CONSISTENT with it.

Her book is called "The Eat Clean Diet", and I think most people would find it a large leap from the average diet so it gets dismissed as too restrictive by some. But, for me, I've been weaned off of refined sugar over the last year or so, and I already eat very clean...like I said, I just eat too much and I'm not great at pairing protiens, dealing with social eating, and my biggest challenge is again...CONSISTENCY.

Sparkpeople helped me to get off of sugar because we had a forum of 3 gals, including myself, that checked in together for literally months. That made all the difference in the world between success and the other zillion times I had tried and failed. Unfortunately, going on a year and a half now and with new goals, we've disbanded.

I would really like to get this last 15 lbs off.
I would really love to build a CONSISTENT clean eating routine, and find some other folks who are pumped up enough too.
I came very close today to signing up for an on-line coaching program that would have cost $1200! I may still in another 6 months or so, but because I've done it once (free), I'm hoping to do it again using Sparkpeople.

I hadn't heard about Tosca Renon's plan, but now I'm gonna check it out. I slipped up the last few days and feel unbelievably gross! I' like you was in a plateau last week, but on track. EVen that felt so much better than this yuckiness. can't wait for tomorrow!

Biking my way down the scale.

Hi everyone,

I'm going to try Tosca Reno's "cooler plan" this week.
I bought a cooler with a hard removable plastic container inside, and I'm going to pack my salads and clean foods and see how it goes.

I checked out Tosca's book from the library, and tried it for a day...I was surprised at how good I felt! I am not so consistent with getting a protein match with my carbs, and when I put effort into that, I really did feel good and even-keeled.

Right now, I am struggling with dropping 15 lbs. Despite aggressively exercising, it's just not budging, and I know it's in large part because I eat way too much and I'm not consistent with my plan.

I'm hoping to have another clean eating enthusiast out there that would be down with daily support with changing habits. Having a good plan along with support is the difference between making it and not making it!
