Absolutely. It'll do them good to have to actually prepare their own food rather than just opening a can. A life skill that when they're older they'll thank you for.
My Dad imposed a rule on my brother and I when I was a teenager. Once a month my brother or I had to make dinner for them and it couldn't just be hot dogs and mac and cheese.
It had to be something my Mom had never made before. It became a pretty neat challenge for at least me, my brother wasn't so thrilled. LOL

I used to go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and buy Pita's. It takes only a few minutes to make Pita Pizza's. preheat the oven to 375 deg, Put a tbls. tomatoe sauce on each pita, sprinkle of italion seasoning, shredded cheese, toppings of choice and bake for about 10 min.

We'd also make pita chips with them and dip it in my homemade hummas. Your kids will get used to preparing their own food, it's fun. Well, my kids don't like the cleaning up part of it, but I help them.

Not exactly a crazy plan. After all Jillian Michaels does that all the time to other people!
Still though, your kids will be better for it later. As you learn to cook healthy they will pick up some of what is going on and hopefully continue that later through life.
They may kick and scream but sooner or later they'll give in and eat what is available. Hopefully just not the available junk at school.

My kids do eat fruit, they are starting to get tired of it though. they want something like raviolis... basically quick and easy because i work 11-7 and wake up as they are coming back from school which is when they want a snack. Lunch time is too early for them so they are ravonous when they come home.

I think after reading some of your posts and a link i found somewhere else that maybe i switched over too quick and with out the healthier substitutions in place. So I got them some snacks but when I learn to make something (like ketchup) I will *then* quit buying that item. (I do buy the kind w/out hfcs)

I went a little crazy and threw out a ton of stuff that had bad ingredients with out a plan for substituting.

Hhhhmm, these are all good suggestions! I'm in the camp with some here that my son actually is a fruit monster! Lay out a plate of fruit and veggies and it'll be gone within a few minutes.
Do your kids like cheese? How about sliced cheddar, mozzarella sticks, or the popcorn or even nuts! We stock lots of nuts in our house and eat them like crazy.

I can't keep the grandkids OUT of my healthy food! They are vegetarians but they love yogurt, homemade cookies and granola bars. No problem here, think they eat healthier than I do!

Nothing wrong with FRYING. I use healthy fats to fry in. Be careful how much RICE you eat though! lol
I also put butter on popcorn REAL butter. Not margarine. We all need to eat fat. Kids especially...
just avoid trans fats.

Other than fruits? ...I'm glad my kids still attack fruit. lol
Well, what about popcorn? ...air popped, if need be... quick and easy, even warm for the cold weather.
My kids also like soups, so some weekends I make up huge batches and store them in easy microwavable containers for such times.
I also make large batches of "fried rice" with brown rice... not fried of course, but it's warm and filling and easy to warm up in the microwave from freezer too.
Cook up some boneless/skinless chicken breasts, and slice them up... my guys love using a bit of ranch dressing as dip with that...

I make homemade granola bars. I also make homemade icecream without sugar. Homamade cookies without sugar. I use stevia quite a bit.
Homemade smoothies with fruit & yogurt. Hummus & pita wedges. Carrot sticks. Dried fruit. My kid LOVES freeze dried fruit. Especially strawberries.

fruit sorbet is fantastic and my kids LOVE them. There's some really good healthy snack recipes like granola in the spark recipe section. It's delicious over yogurt, you can even sweeten your homemade yogurt with agave nectar and adding fresh fruit. Another family favorite is homemade hummus with sliced jicama, cucumber, celery or even homemade veggie chips also located in the recipe section.

Go in Nature's Market at Wegmans...there are even some Wegmans brand things and not all of it is expensive. Every store has a different selection so check a few. There is even a natural bulk foods you can get some nuts, dried fruit, grains, etc. Maybe make them some clean cookies or something from scratch...Tops also has some good deals on the Nature's Promise stuff. The one in Perinton has a lot. Hope that helps!

I do not hold my family to the exact Clean Eating diet that I follow. I do not buy them artificial colors or flavors, but I allow for some junk food. Tostidos chips (corn, oil, salt), oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, hummus, peanut butter and celery, etc. I will buy them the "junk" food when I am at Whole Foods. Hope that helps.

I just started clean eating, My kids are 20, (well she is in a dorm so only rebells on weekends) 18, and 16. They do not like the new foods i am bringing in. They think I am crazy for making homemade yogurt and butter. They are upset that there is no more ravioli's, canned soup, frozen pizza or anything in a box. Basically no quick snacks after school.

Can anyone tell me what quick snacks besides fruit (they get tired of it) you create for your kids that have previously eaten junk? I am tempted to go for organic mixes but I cant afford to do it alot so i don't really wanna go there.
