I have the same worry. While it's important to eat the best you can in all settings, there's something to be said for maintaining the pleasantness of what should be a celebration.

Everyone has given great advice so far. On-line menus can save lots of time at the table. When your plate comes, try to visualize what the serving size should be and box up or otherwise leave the rest.

I would also suggest scouting out some local places that look promising. That way, you have a list at the ready the next time you're asked where you'd like to eat. I'll admit to being spoiled by my metro location, but I've even got options for clean pizza and burger joints.

I try to be as quiet about it, and mostly it works. If you order shrimp, that has so little calories.
I always also get fish or chicken. Most restaurant Salads are usually loaded with calories unless you are careful (garden salads are great though). I 100% know this dilemna..........

I'm one of those people who would annoy you and ask for modifications. I have to live in my body after the other people have left the dinner table. I guess I figure they'll get over my pain-in-the-butt way of ordering (and believe me- I know I am annoying and apologize to everyone, including the waiter, when I order) quicker than I will get over bad choices because I wasn't pro-active on my own behalf.

It was the Fajita Fiesta con Pollo. It did have cheese, but only a tad-not alot. And it had red tortilla strips, but again only a few-not more than 8-10. It looked very healthy! (Looks are deceiving!). We had gone to Red Robin.

thats an insane amount of calories in a salad! did the calorie tally online include the dressing? I usually order a ceasar salad without croutons, dressing and parmasean on the side with grilled chicken or steak, relatively boring but clean. I'm avoiding counting calories right now though and just focusing on clean eating and portion sizing. I agree with shakenbake though good job with asking for a to go box right away

Good job for asking for a to go box. Once you log in your food and learn proporations you'll be able to know how much you can eat. Salads are usually very low in calories however, you must always ask for the croutons off, dressing on the side, never any cheese and of course no sour cream etc. If it has an avocado then I only eat a few slices etc. I eat this way EVERYDAY!! :) What resaurant did you eat at and what kind of salad was it.

But many of the salads at chain restaurants have loads of calories. I went with my grandson and ordered a grilled chicken salad that had black beans. I ordered dressing on the side. I asked the waitress for a box as soon as it arrived so that I could take half home. When I got home, I went online and found out that the whole salad as is was 900 some calories (I think it was like 984!) It was chicken, veggies, black beans!

I would go with the salad idea unless you are familiar with the menu, or protein and veggies ( or salad) and a complex carb. I wouldnt get nervous about ordering, though i can relate, I always remind myself that I am ordering a service and that I am paying them. It is a service and your server should want to make you happy, and im sure that if you are nice and polite it shouldnt be an issue. good luck

I am definitely, "one of those people". I have a lot of food allergies and have to be careful what I eat. Even my kids find it annoying, when I order. A lot of chain restaurants, have their menu online. If you know which one you're going to, you can plan what you are going to order, ahead of time. I like this because it sometime gives the calories, also. Good luck, and enjoy your meal!

too bad if you drive anyone crazy!
Never fried, Order grilled meats w/o butter or oil. Steamed veggies (again w/o butter) are often subbed for fully loaded baked potatoes.
Forgo the gravies and heavy sauces. Vinaigrette's are best for salad instead of creamy etc. Clear soups, not creamy...
I think it's fun to order in restaurants I am so proud of all I have learned on this "journey".

Shakenbake has a great solution. Hard to beat that!

If salad isn't your thing then the least you can do is order veggies and meat and skip the pasta, bread and dessert. Drink lots of water while you are sitting at the table and try to leave half your meal for the "doggy bag". Give it to a street person or to a friend or even eat it yourself the next day.

I should practice what I preach. I'm usually a bit nervous when eating with others and in my nervousness I frequently eat too much...crazy...a little

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when itís a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, theyíre terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

We don't go out to eat often as we enjoy our way of cooking better and it's cheaper. If we go out I ALWAYS order a huge salad for my main corse and skip the croutons and dressing.

hopefully this hasnít been asked before but i have a question:

when you go out to eat (and have little or no say in the restaurant choice) what do you order? letís for instance, youíre invited by friends or family at a big chain restaurant that serves mostly processed foods.

see, i have this thing about being one of ďthoseĒ people. my ex boyfriend and i had friends who were doing atkins and they would request all sorts of modifications to the food theyíd order and it drove us bananas.

the few times iíve been out to eat since iíve started my transition to cleaner eating; iíve just done my best to quietly find the right foods for me but i know that sometimes iíll be in a situation where there really arenít healthy choices. what do you do then?

anyway, i was just wondering what everyoneís take was on eating out.

canít wait to hear your input, thank you!!!!
