I am new to eating clean! what about this (other then the fructose) is bad? This is what I found on Subway site in the US
9-GRAIN WHEAT: Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, whole wheat flour, wheat gluten, contains 2% or less of the following: oat fiber, soybean oil, salt, wheat bran, rolled wheat, rye nuggets, dough conditioners (DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate), yeast nutrients (calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate), degermed yellow corn meal, rolled oats, rye flakes, caramel color, triticale flakes, parboiled brown rice, refinery syrup, honey, barley flakes, flaxseed, millet, sorghum flour, azodiacarbonamide, natural flavor (maltodextrin, natural flavor, silicon dioxide, lactic acid). Contains wheat.

I ate at Subway today. I ordered what I thought was a $5 footlong - roast beef. Anyway, I upgraded to a meal and it was $10.02. Roast beef is no longer an option for $5 footlongs.

Subway is about third on my list of emergency choices for available fast food.
I don't get as sick as say, KFC. I gave the grilled chicken a chance over the weekend. I'm still paying for that choice. I'll even have to force myself to exercise today. Something I would normally look forward too. UGH.
So far the only place we have to eat, that I have found that does not upset my system, is Panera Bread. It may not be totally clean, but it doesn't upset my system for days on end.
It is upsetting to work so hard to stay clean then have to eat out and mess that up :)
I try to remember to throw an orange or banana, some nuts in a baggie or a protein bar in my purse before leaving the house. But sometimes we can't even get away with that.

That really upsets me...I'm vegetarian and when I go to subway I am always careful not to get deli meat or anything...always went with the veggie sub and thought I was ok. So sad. Thank you so much for this information!!

I was sad to find out about Subway's bread. I was hoping it would be a safe meal for me if I were out and needed a meal. Just one more reason to keep snacks and healthy things on hand when doing lots of errands...

I wouldn't beat myself up over Subway...but then again I hate it when people tell me "don't worry, it's JUST one time or it's JUST one little cheat" - so I don't know how hard you are on yourself.

I do consider Subway fast food, and even though what I know about Clean Eating could fill a thimble {for now...give me time!} I would say that I would assume that "just about" any food from any fast food restaurant wasn't clean.

I had a delicious Subway sub tonight...chicken breast on honey oat bread with lettuce, tomato, green peppers, onions and vinegar - YUM! Accompanied by only water - no chips or pop thankyouverymuch!

A friend was came to visit and we ate out a lot. I did not eat very clean at all and we seemed to have one large meal in the middle of the day. I felt OK, but I paid for it the next week. I felt like I had lead in my tummy and was constipated.

I feel better now.

I have to say that after eating clean for only 3 weeks, I've learned to listen to my body SOOO much. I say this, b/c when I went on vacation to New York City last week and tried my best to eat clean when I could, I could still feel that yucky sluggish feeling that I get when I eat refined and simple carbs. I didn't feel "sick" when eating out, but you can just tell the difference. Don't get me wrong, I'll still eat out from time to time, b/c I can't close myself in my home and only eat my foods all the time, but it makes me appreciate eating clean that much more on a daily basis.

I crave fresh fruits, fresh water and whole grains now! No more Baked Lays and Fat Free Pringles for me!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

That's just my limited experience so far. Bummer about Subway...but sometimes you just gotta make the best of the situation that you're in for the moment.

I eat raw most all of the time..veg and fruit...eating salmon and chicken once or twice a week but when I eat out I do subway...I don't intend to let clean eating own my entire life...I feel good after I eat there so I know it is NOT that bad for me. Where I live it is the only choice if I want to eat out (small town you know)

I find you have to eat out once in a while. I find when we visit out of town or across the border and stay in a hotel, if you eat l00% clean you will be sick when travelling. You cannot go out with people and expect them to eat the way we do. It just is not realistic.

So we do the best we can most of the time. I found I couldn't eat out, everything bothered my stomach so I had to eat out once in a while so we could visit friends and family.

I had Subway for dinner last night too. Turkey on wheat w/ veggies. It's just something I want once in a great while, but I wish the bread was better!

I wouldn't feel bad at all! This is real life it can't always be centered on eating. Just be happy that you made a healthy choice even if all of the ingredients couldn't be perfectly how you wanted them.

It is hard to be totally prepared every day. I always find myself at a Chick Fila drive thru. I always get the grilled chicken sandwich with a fruit cup instead of fries and a un-sweetened iced tea. Sounds healthy but I know it is no where near clean. It makes me want to pack all of my meals no matter what. But sometimes we have to eat out. I guess this just tells me that I need to be 100% clean with the meals I pack because when I eat out it won't be totally clean.

Well I guess I didn't eat 100% clean today, and that sucks because I've been eating 100% clean for three weeks straight. I had a whole wheat turkey breast- dry, no cheese with lots of veggies. It's the best I could do. I didn't have time to make my lunch last night or this morning, so I had to go get something. Well it was one meal; I'm sure it won't set me back too bad. It was still mostly healthy. Before I started eating clean I would have thought that I did great today for lunch!

I know. I don't even enjoy it anymore. Ijust got back from a two day trip. I tried to bring healthy food with me, but I still had to eat at least two or three meals out at restaraunts.
After looking at my nutrient totals for those two days, I was disgusted!
Way too many calories, fat, carbs and sodium. Not enough vitamin A, protein, calcium or fiber. I didn't even care for the food that much.
I would have much rather have eaten some stir-fried shrimp, olive oil, red peppers and garlic, with a chunk of whole grain bread. AT HOME! YUM!

That is interesting. I went to the SUBWAY CANADA website, and there is NO WAY to even look up nutrient info, let alone ingredients lists of any of there menu items. As discovered on another thread, some of realized theat Hellman's mayonnaise in the USA was made with HFCS, but in Canada it was not... so, I had wondered about the bread thing. But, since there is no way of checking, I'm already suspicious! Thanbks for the heads up!
Also, sometimes we do have to make do with what is on hand... emoticon

IT'S NOT!!!!!! The bread is made with sugar and HFCS, even the wheat and it is also not whole wheat, only enriched wheat flour (aka white flour that looks brown). If you go to their website they list all of their ingredients. The only thing you could really do clean is make a salad out of all the veggies (possibly the chicken but you would have to check) and not use any dressing. I think they also have apple slices.

I used to love subway veggie subs with cheese and yellow mustard. I thought I would be able to continue eating them (sounds pretty clean right?) until I looked up the ingredients of the bread. The wraps don't have HFCS but are also not whole wheat flour and are very high in calories (like 300 or something crazy).

I immediately emailed the company and would encourage everyone else to do the same. I am on a strike from eating Subway until they change their bread. I think it is extremely irresponsible of a chain that claims it's healthy to use bread with HFCS and offer a wheat bread that is not even whole wheat!

Subway has chicken breast, veg sandwiches, salads and if you take your own dressing or ask them to put vinegar on the sandwiches and salads it works out good. The tuna is loaded with mayo and has trans fat in it. They have a nine grain roll and also a whole wheat bun. I eat there all the time and they also have a nutrients book that has all the information in it.

I suppose if you had whole wheat or whole grain bun, unprocessed meat, such as chicken breast, or tuna, lots of veggies, and choose your dressings/condiments wisely, it might be clean. But, yes, you have to watch out for the deli meats. High in nitrates AND sodium!

I am no expert, but I would think that it wouldn't be clean at all. The meat is processed and has nitrates in it. Just a guess.
