That is so great that you wrote them and called them out on the use of HFCS!! Way to go! Hopefully others will point out their idiocy and maybe it will cause them to reevaluate their decision.

I was eating Sweet and Sour sauce the other day. And I should have known better. Right as I was taking the last dip, I looked at the ingredients. Blah!!! Darn cheap cr@p.

I checked the labels of the condiments in my fridge. All the non-organic ones have HFCS. All the organic ones have "clean" ingredients. Thanks for the tip.

I got a reply from Hellman's today.
"Due to the rising price of sugar, Hellmann's has replaced it with High Fructose Corn Syrup in the Low Fat mayonnaise (jars only). The product's quality, taste, appearance, texture and caloric content are not changed or affected by the use of HFCS. Both HFCS and sugar are considered nutritive sweeteners and are allowed by the FDA Standard of Identity for mayonnaise."
Nutritive? no thank you!
I sent them back a link to this.

I hate saying it, but I am not supposed to have much soy, because of my hypothyroid. :( I do indulge occasionally though... so maybe I will try some since I don't use it much.

Mustard? Geepers!

Well geeze. Yes, normally I do read labels, but I should re-read them after not reading them for a few months. That mayo didn't used to have HFCS in it. Ugh... And why do they need to use mercury to process a food product?

Jackie that would be me finding HFCS in my brand new bottle of mustard,...all I can say is to become an AVID label reader BEFORE you buy the product when shopping in the center isles of your grocery store.

Better to read the label there, than find out about it after you've spent your $$$$$$$...

When my husband goes into the kitchen and opens the refridgerator ( and cupboards) he says "what did you but at the store? There isn't anything GOOD to eat. It all looks healthy! " LOL!
He goes away to work in camp for about two weeks at a time, and I've got my 5 year old LOVING my homemade, CLEANED UP versions of food. She loves my whole wheat pancakes and raw organic broccoli...
It's true, once you eat clean for a while, your taste for BAD stuff does go away.
I look forward to my HEALTHY meals and am always up to the challenge of turning a traditional recipe into a much CLEANER recipe!

I don't eat mayo and DH doesn't care about HFCS but I wanted to add that I read another member post about finding HFCS in her MUSTARD!!! I was shocked by that!!!

I also wanted to share that I found out yesterday that Oroweat English muffins no longer have HFCS!!! I checked their loaves of bread and it is still in most varieties but the English muffins are labeled "No HFCS"!!!

Have a great day!!!

Yes, that is the problem, exactly, Butterflyblt!
I am doing my best to get rid of so many unhealthy things in my house. I've been working on ridding our pantry and fridge of HFCS for a couple of years now and thought I had - then whap! Where did that come from? Geeze...

As it is, when we go to a regular food store there is hardly anything we eat in there anymore.

Wow! I noticed that quite a few foods are different in Canada than in the us. When I put something in my food tracker, I usually have to emter it manually because the nutrtional values are all different (same name brands)
Let me know what they say (if they answer you)

HAWGWILD1 just told me that her Hellman's has no HFCS. She's in BC. I always used Hellman's in Ohio. I moved back here to CA 7 years ago and couldn't find Hellman's. I've been using Best Foods - but, like I said, I almost never was using it. The bf is getting into wanting home made slaw, recently, and so I started making it and am using more of it again.... so I bought new mayo.

Now just look at what I found!

"Hellmann'sŪ is known as Best FoodsŪ west of the Rockies. "
http://www.hellmanns.com/products/light_
mayo.aspx

I just wrote them asking why they are putting HFCS in Best Foods in CA and not in Hellman's in BC. That is so wrong! I wonder if they will actually write me back?

Yes. I might just go with the strained yogurt.
My sister used to make a sort of cream cheese spread like that, adding herbs as desired, which was delicious!

I'm not too sure how to pare back the calories. But, you can use sea salt nstead of table salt (there is no sea salt in Sparkpeople's database!)
I love mayo too. I just don't eat it anymore. emoticon

Oh thank you both for those recipes! And thank you double for doing the calorie count for that!

Now to figure out how to pare the calories a bit on that real mayo. Although I bet it tastes so darn much better that I would only have to use a fraction of the amount!

I love REAL mayonaise, but just don't eat it much anymore. I am not sure if full fat mayo would have the HFCS, so check your jars. Since it's something supposed to be spicy, I can't figure why they would put HFCS in any of them, anyway. Ugh.

However, the yogurt recipe might be more up my alley. Lower in fat. And I love yogurt anyway. I sometimes make my own. We eat lots of it here... I use it instead of sour cream. I throw it on top of so many things as a savory, and sometimes just add some to fruit with a touch of vanilla and stevia - which is what I ate for breakfast the last two days.

Found one!

Ingredients:
2 egg yolks
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon powdered mustard
1/8 teaspoon sugar
Pinch cayenne pepper
4 to 5 teaspoons lemon juice or white vinegar
1-1/2 cups olive or other salad oil
4 teaspoons hot water

Blender or Processor Mayonnaise Place yolks, salt, mustard, sugar, pepper, and 3 teaspoons lemon juice in blender cup or work bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal chopping blade, and buzz 15 seconds (use low blender speed). Now, with motor running, slowly drizzle in 1/4 cup oil (use moderately high blender speed). As mixture begins to thicken, continue adding oil in a fine steady stream, alternating with hot water and remaining lemon juice. Stop motor and scrape mixture down from sides of blender cup or work bowl as needed.

I added the nutrient values; it's a little high in calories, so just use a LITTLE!

Makes 1 1/2 cups

OMG! I had no idea!!! I don't really use mayo either, but on rare occasion; but it's in my frige; the rest of my family eats it.
My mom used to make her own mayo all the time... she and my dad eat only ORGANIC foods. My dad had terminal cancer; CURED it by eating organic stuff.
I'm gonna find a recipe and then I'll come back and post!
Thanks for the heads up!

I do not use mayo. I strain my homemade yogurt in cheese cloth to use as a spread or I use avocado. Here's a homemade mayo recipe.

1 large egg
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Pinch of ground red pepper
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Combine the egg, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in the bowl of a food processor or blender. While running, add olive oil in a slow stream until the mixture is thick and light colored.

Serves 8
Serving size: 2 tablespoons, 95 calories, 11 g fat,
64 mg Sodium,
Makes 1 cup

Ugh... I do seldom use mayonaise but I did last night, and while putting the jar away saw that there was HFCS in it. Since when do they put that in mayo? And why? That's nuts! Granted it was low fat mayo, but I've bought this brand before and I always watch for HFCS and never noticed it before.

Has everyone seen the information about mercury in HFCS and how the government has been subsidizing it, and the FDA has known this for four years?

I'm already doing home made ketchup and bbq sauce. Anyone have a recipe for low fat mayo?
