My coffee in the morning is really almost 50% soy milk, a tsp of agave syrup or honey, and it's only 1/4 - 1/2 caff. And organic. I won't give up any more than that!! I did for several weeks once, and I was (sadly but truly) miserable in the a.m. without it!

Well there's a good idea...I did buy some organic chocolate syrup. Clearly has sugar in it, but right now my big hurdle is to cut out the chemicals.

I love dark chocolate, the darker the better. The chocolate for my coffee lately has been a Trader Joe's European sipping chocolate. It has just 4 ingredients, cocoa powder, cane sugar, chocolate liquor and cocoa butter.

My habit (and I won't give it up) is chocolate and half and half in my morning cup of coffee. I get the "cleanest" chocolate I can find, cocoa with sugar (at least I'm skipping the cocoa w/ hydrogenated fats, and no HFCS). It's not really clean, but I do good for the most part, so I don't sweat this one.

On page 47 of the expanded edition she says she gave up the cream to spare the calories and fat. Lowfat milk is clean - just remember that you're adding a few calories, and you should be fine.

I went well over a week without diet sodas or calorie free (but chemical laden) drink mix, and recently regressed. This is the hardest thing. I also used fat free hazelnut creamer this morning ....

Fair Trade french roast coffee with beans I grind myself. No sugar ever, but (local, small-farm, 100% natural) full-fat cream. Not only in the morning, but also sometimes when I'm craving a dessert.

To me, coffee with skim milk is akin to sipping from a warm mud puddle.

Hi Ya'll,

i just remembered this: someone {universe knows who} said they drinked their coffee black BUT with a tsp/tbp of dry milk powder.

I think that would be a neat way of having "creamer" without the sugary stuff in your body, another way to get some dairy & the kewlest way to "trick" your mind in thinking a person didnt give up their "creamer"

I add skim milk too. I think the reason Tosca says to cut it out is that most people add sugar and creamer or sugar substitutes. She really wants you to get away from sugar and sugar substitutes, plus creamer. None of it is good for you. Then she really advocates not drinking your calories... So I figure it is for those 3 reasons, not so much that skim milk in coffee is not clean or not good for you or will hurt your metabolism. I could be wrong, but that seems logical, doesn't it?

I gave up caffeine a few years ago...So I eat hardly any chocolate, drink no coffee, and drink no tea. Is there a reason I should start? I am new to Eating Clean and haven't had a chance to read his book yet. That is on my find at the library this weekend list.

Hi Ya'll,

i also drink coffee with a bit of skim milk or soymilk with some flavoured creamer {so not healthy} but no sugar...dont need to cos the creamer is sweet enuff emoticon i can give up the creamer not the milk. i can drink plain black tea with 1 tsp of sugar & no milk in it.

the only reason to drink your coffee black is if ya'll enjoy it black. Other than that---less calories

I had pretty much the same reaction at 1st. I switched for awhile to soymilk in my coffee, and eventually said the heck with it if I can't have cream and sugar I don't want anything. Now I drink it black,it was an adjustment but now I don't think I could go back to the cream and sugar.

Good Luck!

I don't see why you can't add some skim milk to your coffee. What is the problem in that? You can drink skim milk by itself so why can't you add it to the coffee? Anyone know of a reason for this? Doesn't make any sense to me. What if you were drinking a glass of milk and a cup of black coffee during breakfast? You can drink them separately but not together? I think it was just meant not to add cream, creamer, sugar etc...

stevia isn't expensive if you buy the liquid.. one drop will do..

the other thing, if you can find a tea shop.. go and sample some good loose leaf tea.. it's nothing like what you get in a tea bag and the switch from coffee can be so easy with the right tea. Most shops will make you c a cup to sample of you choices.

Likewise- SO HARD! That is one indulgous I just don't WANT to give up- call me stubborn, but I really look forward to some skim milk in great coffee beans! It makes me happy! I drink one cup- max two a day...and yes Splenda- maybe I switch to Stevia- but sooo expensive!

Is there a list out there of what is clean and what isn't- that I could download or something- I keep going back to the book but I need something obvious and posted.

"Drink your java black" is listed under Boosting your Metabolism in the book. But, I can't find teh explanation for why in any of the pages surrounding it.

Cream in my coffee is the last thing to go to being vegan. I cannot drink it black... blech.... but it's okay with vanilla soy milk. Maybe one day I'll do it black as I know many people who drink it that way.

I am also trying to cut back on coffee, because I won't drink it black. I use skim or low fat soy milk to help make it a little better. My biggest concern about my morning coffee was the sucralose (Splenda) that I was using. Since I was using a packet in each of the 5 or 6 cups of coffee, I was getting a lot of artificial sweetner. I'm now using Stevia and Agave nectar to sweeten and cut back to 3 cups of coffee a day. It's been a week, and I'm starting to feel detoxed.

I'm going to keep working on a gradual reduction in coffee, maybe eventually, I too can switch to tea in the morning.

I can't drink it black, either. Blech!

But I am transitioning to green tea (I just bought the Lipton Green Tea Cranberry/Pomegranate variety), and I can drink it without any sweetener or anything.

I would think a cup or so of coffee with some milk in the morning is not going to derail Clean Eating, but that's just my opinion. I was using a flavored creamer that had artificial sweetener and partially hydrogenated fats, so that's why I'm trying to get off it.

Best of luck!

How terrible is it to drink coffee with milk? The clean eating books talk about black coffee only, but I tried to drink it black and couldn't do it. I did quit for about a week, but between the headaches and irritability it was just too much for me.
