I'm judging my servings by handful like Tosca says. I'm the only veggie eater in the house, and I buy them once or twice a week. I got a Rubbermaid Produce Saver to keep my cut veggies fresh longer.

When you say servings of fruits/veggies are you guys talking about 1/2cup cooked 1cup raw?

Are any of you guys single. Having that much variety in my fridge i would be afraid would go bad.

I am working on the green smoothie--can i use frozen greens? i was looking at a green powder but it didnt seem to have much fiber. Not sure if i can fit 6 servings of fruits/veggies in my magic bullet.

I cook lots of stir fries and roasted veggies but never thought how much veggies i was usuing to determine the servings. And on salads i cant see myself eating cauliflower and brocolli so i pretty much have lettuce, spinach, tomato, cusumber, red onion(but i dont eat 1/2cup of onion), ??

I split mine half and half, though I feel like I should probably give veggies another serving, but I don't have too much trouble with 3 and 3. Here's how I do it:

Breakfast - 1 serving (oatmeal w/fruit, toast and banana, pear and cottage cheese)
AM snack - usually fruit, apple with PB, orange
Lunch - two servings, one fruit, one veggie (I usually get 2 veggies actually)
PM snack - veggies and hummus or yogurt, celery with PB
Dinner - 1-2 servings veggies as sides or main dish

I usually measure out 4 ounces of the fruits/veggies that I eat. I'm not usre if that's a true serving size or not but that's what I do.

I try to eat at least 2 servings of fruit and 4 servings of veggies. I will cut up fresh pineapple and kiwi or eat an apple with natural peanut butter, I also like bananas. For veggies, I pick up those Steamfresh vegies packs in the freezer section. They are easy and really good. Sometimes I eat the whole bag and I think it's 3 servings and sometimes I portion it out and eat it throughour the day. Roasted potatoes and other veggies are really good too. I like to put carrots, celery and cucumbers in a bowl and them raw or in a salad with mixed greens and spinach.

JL Princess,
It's not hard at all to get all of the fruits and veggies in. For instance, spinach can be put in and added to just about everything. If you're making a homemade pizza, throw some spinach leaves on it! Are you making a fruit smmoothie, add some spinach! You're not going to taste it in the smoothie, but you'll get the nutrition- that's for sure.
Keep some cut up bell peppers in a container in your fridge and throw them in your eggs or soup or whatever.
Fruit is easy- add it to your yogurt. Eat some prunes in the morning as a snack (that will keep you regular and promote healthy digestion and metabolism). An entire grapefruit is 2 servings of fruit.

Thanks to everyone that has responded so far. You guys have given me some great ideas and it's also nice to see that I'm not the only one struggling with this :)

MARVELOUS50S, you bring up a great point....Serving Size!

On Sunday, I pre washed and cut all of my veggies. I also packaged them by serving size. I just followed Tosca's advice and measured out either a handful or two handfuls, depending on the veggie or fruit. Is this the way you guys do it, or is there a weight you go off of? For instance, 1/2 cup of carrots or a handful of them?

Again, thanks!!

Also when trying to get in your servings of fruit and vegetables be mindful of serving size. Alot of time 1/2 cup is a serving size. For example a serving size of lettuce is 1/2 cup per Sparks. You have a nice salad, like plate of lettuce (2 servings), tomato, carrots or mushrooms or any diced fruit and you have knocked off five of the required servings right there.

I'm struggling with this too. It's even harder when you count starchy fruits and vegetables in the starch and grain category, which you're only supposed to have two to four servings a day- that includes bananas, sweet potatoes, corn, carrots, and squash. I buy some of the raw veggies I do like and eat them for a snack. I've been buying a lot of the steam-in-bag frozen veggies to add to lunch or dinner. Steamed greens are great because you can eat a whole bunch steamed down to a small portion.

I'm a fruit lover too! I actually make raw smoothies. A few servings of Fruits and about 2 servings of veggies. I also have 1-2 veggies with dinner (sometimes they're carb veggies). Also salads!!! Lots of leafy greens, tons of onions (LOVE ONIONS), tomatoes, red cabbage, ect. Some of my lunches have a tomato sauce which also counts toward the veggies.

I do though like having some carrots and broccoli with a little dip every now and then.

I'll admit that I get more fruits than veggies. I'm attracted to sweet and acidic foods, and fruits andmy favorite veggies fit that bill. I though am not concerned with the extra sugar, I actaully need it for the hypoglycemia (paired with a high protein food). I'm also not trying to get a "ripped" look. I figure if I'm going to eat healthy then it needs to be foods that I love and ejoy or else I'll never get in what I need.

I make a smoothie for breakfast, usually with a banana, some strawberries, and one other fruit.

I have a green salad for lunch, and another one for dinner. This usually has lettuce, tomato, radish, carrot, and anything else I can find.

With dinner I usually also make a cooked vegetable, like peas or corn, steamed broccoli, etc. Lunch and dinner are 50% vegetables, 25% carbs (like brown rice), and 25% protein.

This really helps get them in. If, for some reason, I haven't hit my goal, I'll juice some in a juicer and drink it. It's not the whole fruit or veg, but at least I get the nutrients.

Here is what I do, for what it is worth! :)

Breakfast - simple harvest cereal or ezekiel bread with apple butter, an apple or banana (1 fruit)
Snack - 16 carrots with hummus - under 60 calories (2 vegetables)

Lunch - salad, hot vegetable (two veg) - I eat more than that, but you get the idea

Snack - veg with hummus or a piece of fruit

Dinner - sweet potato or regular potato or veggies of some sort with main course + plus small salad if I still need fruit/veggies.

Carrots are the easiest and most calorie-effective way to get in a couple of servings.

I know that you should get a variety of different fruit and veg but I stick to what I like, that way i know i will eat it and enjoy it. I like most veg excepts peas, can't bear 'em!

Also I would focus more on veg than fruit because as someone has already said, fruit is high in sugar.

Here are some non-crunchy options, although I really like crunchy veggies.
*In an omelette I'll add onions, green peppers and tomato.
*I add one handful of raw baby spinach to a smoothie, and not even taste it.
*Veggie soup that I make for the week to eat at lunch.
*Roasted veggies with some cracked pepper, and a little bit of sea salt and drizzled with olive oil.
*Saute and put into a wrap with chicken or turkey

I really have to pay attention to get my veggies in too... they are just not what I enjoy eating the most. I much prefer fruit.

I've not tried vegetables in my smoothies yet. Actually, I did try beets, but they were just too grainy for my taste.

I generally try to get them in one of the following ways:
1.) in an egg-white scramble... I use various combinations of onions, red peppers, celery, tomatoes and spinach
2.) in a salad... I use a base of spinach and/or red leaf lettuce with added tomatoes, cabbage, red peppers, brocoli, cauliflower, cucumbers (avocados, garbanzo beans, chicken or tuna too)
3.) in a wrap... grilled chicken or ground turkey w/ shredded cabbage, red pepper, green onions
4.) always as a side with dinner

I've been curious to try a greens product (like Greens+) in my smoothies, but haven't had the guts yet... I'm averse to spending $40 on a product that I'm not sure I'll like.

A banana before the gym in the AM.
Sometimes I have a huge salad with lunch...2 cups of raw spinach with broccoli slaw [3 servings there]

Fruits as snacks during the day.
A similar salad as lunch for dinner...and possibly a fruit later on.

Good luck!

You could easily fit 4-6 servings of greens into a green smoothie (fruit smoothie with spinach, chard, lettuces, herbs, etc) in it, and sometimes I add beets to the smoothie, too. I typically get 12-15 servings of fruits and veg in a day, and the green smoothie counts for 6-10 of them. :)

Fresh veggies with hummus, lots of stir fries, typically one salad a day, homemade soup (make a batch for a week's worth at one time) which gives me 2-3 servings worth per bowl and is healthier than canned stuff. I don't have a lot of fruit myself - other than bananas - they give me too much of a sugar rush.

I had thought 8 servings was generally what was recommended.

If you're having trouble, take wherever you are at now and try and add one serving per day each week. If you go to WHfoods.com there is a list there of the healthiest foods. Most of them are affordable and pretty easy to find in decent stores. Print out a copy of the list and each time you go for groceries try to pick up 2 on the list that you haven't tried before or that maybe you want to figure out something to do with. There are some great recipes at that site too.

I love to cut up raw veggies and spray that 1 calorie dressing on them. They have a raspberry vinegrette that I love. Also you could put all your favs in those ziploc steam bags. I love those too!

I've decided to go back and re-read the Eat-Clean Diet book...just to make sure that I'm on track and doing what I should be doing. What an eye opener!

I'm not getting all of my veggies in...not by a long shot. Six portions?! Granted, I could eat six portions of fruit, easy. Vegetables are another story.

So here's where I need help: How do you guys get your six portions in? Do you split it: half fruit, half veggies? Are you even able to?

I'm not a fan of raw vegetables. I liked them cooked and soft. Crunch bothers me. Any advice you have would be great. Thanks!!
