ANNIE_NOW, I also chose one evil to do away with at a time. Sometimes they're sneaky and you don't want to overwhelm yourself. What got me started was an allergy to MSG....so we got rid of that, but that meant finding out how it's hidden in labels. (MSG has to be the worse for being hidden in labels! Here's my list:
Autolyzed "anything"
Beef, chicken or pork flavors
Natural flavors
Bouillon/Broth/Stock
Carrageenan
L-cysteine
Caseinate (sodium or calcium)
Flavor(s) or flavoring(s)
Gelatin
Glutamate or glutamic acid
Hydrolyzed (anything)
Prepared soup or sauce base
Seasonings
Spice
Any seasoning salts
Soy or textured protein
Soy sauce
Whey protein or concentrate
Yeast extract or nutrient
and MSG, of course

I actually carry the list in my purse because it's so many to remember! I read labels....all of them, every time I go shopping.

I wanted to go all out when I decided to go clean. I had been eating cleaner before I even knew about it just because we felt we ought to eat better. It helps that my husband doesn't care for "box" foods, so we cook from scratch anyway. And who can afford to eat out much with the price of gas and the price of restaurants now anyway? But once I made the choice to eat clean I did it completely....and ended up having a reaction to something I added but didn't know what it was because I'd added so much. Because I was having such a bad flair up of my IC, my doctor told me to go back to eating and doing what I'd done 3 weeks ago before it started. So off the stevia and back to equal for a while. I'm pretty sure it was the vitamins and not the foods I added in...but have to add them back in 1 at a time now. Not very many people will have problems going clean, but if you have food allergies, or IC or any other medical problem that food affects just add new things 1 at a time. I really wanted to get away from chemicals completely and quickly. The first thing I will change once I'm cleared up is going back to Stevia and getting away from equal.

For me, this is definitely a transition. I don't want just flip the switch and make all of the changes because I think it will be too drastic. I'm making changes slowly, looking at what I did at the end of the day and seeing how I can improve.

My question for everyone is, did you make these changes all at once or did you do it a little at a time?

emoticon Annie_Now! I am sure you can keep it up. Maybe make it a goal in your other goals on SP to help you keep at it! I'm walking to work now, too. It's ~ 3.5 miles and I live at the very top of a steep hill. It takes me ~ an hour to walk to work (downhill most of the way) and 70 minutes to walk home uphill most of the way. But I am burning ~ 700 calories in this and not using gas, helping the environment, saving money...all good! And it helps me to get myself in a good mental place as well.

WOW! That's a lot of stairs, and a lot of walking. Good for you! That will get weight off better than anything...well, just about anyway. Just keep at it. I think next time I go shopping I'll not only pack a drink, but some food too. When I take just a power bar, it just doesn't hold me over. There's no reason why I can't pack a lunch like I'd eat at home, as well as the snacks. Keep up posted on how your doing Annie, I'm so proud of you emoticon

I took all of your advice and last night I made a list of the food I will eat today. I packed it up this morning and took it to work.

My work bag was so much heavier! During my commute, I walk a mile (I have a pedometer so I'm sure) and 10 flights of steps (no exaggeration - going up and down to the subway) - but I just smiled to myself thinking it's just more exercise with weights!

I hope I keep it up! Thanks again.

Plan for away from home!! I drive about a half hour away for shopping, and had to run today....forgot to take anything to drink. I hate Dasani, so grabbed a diet coke (haven't had one in about 3 weeks or so). YUCK! I drank maybe half of it, and that's all I could take. Now my tummy feels yucky too. Getting away from chemicals really makes a difference, and it sure tasted different than I remembered. I hadn't read that crap messed with your taste buds....but mine sure have changed. I got a whiff of KFC while I was up there too. At first the chicken smelled good, but then the smell of the yucky over cooked grease came in the window too - not something I want to eat. Good luck to you, it really does get easier and very exciting as you feel better and try new things.

I think the small steps is key. If you try to do everything at once it seems overwhelming. I eat lots of stuff now that I wouldn't have thought possible a year ago. Another big thing is to cook from scratch as much as possible. Almost everything you make at home is clean. Good luck!

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN,
PREP, PREP, PREP.
It takes time but in order for you to succeed you will have to make the effort and plan and prep your meals out. After you get the hang of it, it does become easier. That is my biggest piece of advice.

Great ideas! I, too, am learning to transition into clean eating ~ it's a challenge now but hopefully once I get the swing of things, it will get easier.

I think what has helped me is to do it in small steps, just like the way SP has set us up to do. Maybe pick a couple of things you want to incorporate into your way of eating and put it on your goal list so you can tick it off each day you do it. Then after a few weeks or however long you think, add in some more. That helped me a lot.

Plan your meals. This helps alot. I try to make sure I have leftovers for the next day for lunch or even put some in the freezer for when I need it. Read labels.

I bought Tosca's book over the weekend and I'm about half way through. So much of it makes sense!

I started today to make the transition to clean eating. I've had five small meals so far, and I've been full all day! I hope I can stick with it.

If anyone has any advice on how they made this transition to clean eating easier, please offer your suggestions.

Thanks!
