Wow - a lot of great advice. I have been eating well for day 19 now and no cravings. Not sure why and to tell the truth, this is very odd - but i am loving it! Blessings

I have thankfully found that I rarely crave anymore but if I do here are the things that help me:

Walnuts. Very healthy. 7 nuts or 14 halves usually do the trick. Drinking a nice green or non caffiene tea with it or water with lemon completely takes away my urge to binge.

1 cup soy or rice milk
2 tablespoons of plain fat free yogurt
2 cups unsweetened frozen mixed fruits
1 banana if desired
1 tsp of honey
cinnamon and nutmeg to taste and blend into a smoothie

Delicious and filling.

Snack on broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrots and apple.

Finally, one slice of wheat or multigrain toast slathered with creamy peanut butter and a bit of fruit perserves.

Hope this helps, I know it really helps me!

I find that brushing your teeth helps a lot. It gets rid of that rogue flavor in your mouth. Once gone, I no longer need to eat to "cover" it.

If that doesn't do the trick, drinking a full glass of water generally does (after the brushing).

If those two fail, I generally cave with a small amount of what is calling my name (or a healthier version of it).

Helloooouuu!

I'm not an expert but I can share what has been working 4 me so far...
I have been clean eating for 5 weeks and I am eating clean 100% except when I slipppp....hehehehee.....
it has happend bout 4 - 6 times since I started, BUT big but,

I'm recovering (since I recently discovered) that the reason of my overweight and the reason for me failing at ALL previous attempts to loose weight were due to:
* bingeing disorder
* emotional eating
* and last but not least BuliMia

I HAD TRIED IN THE PAST EATING CLEAN (BUT NOT 100%) AND IT DID GIVE ME RESULTS
I WOULD TRY IT BOUT 2 MONTHS AND BE ABLE TO LOOSE BTWEEN 15 - 25 LBS AND THEN I WOULD GET BAK 2 MY OLD EATING HABITS (THE REASONS OF GETTING THE WEIGHT BAK & BCOMING A YO-YO DIETER)
----------------------------------------
-----------
So I started Eating Clean again the difference this time is that I NOW have other "weapons" to fight against me failing:

* first of all I'm CONSCIOUS that I have a problem (Eating Disorders) which is the 1st step to recovery

-------------------------------------
* EMOTIONAL EATING HOW I DEAL WITH IT
-------------------------------------

* if I crave a certain food I stop first 2 think why I'm craving

* is it i'm hungry? (my belly growling n all) which is never the reason cuz eating clean keeps me pretty full

so the next question would be

* is it a "comfort" food?
something I would use to make me feel better bcuz I'm:
* bored
* tired
* happy
* sad & depressed (example TOM)
* frustrated
* angry
(these are usually the emotions that "triggers" me to eat "comfort" foods)

NOW! FOR ME!
Emotional Eating combined with Bingeing Disorder is not a pleasant thing since:
Once I'm "triggered" and I allow myself to eat comfort food (I will not be able to stop until my little belly hurts)consequences of bingeing....

---------------------------------------
* BINGEING DISORDER HOW I DEAL WITH IT
---------------------------------------

* if i'm craving sumthin (usually sweets N pastries) I will ABSOLUTELY NOT have it when I'm craving cuz I feel out of control
(I will usually try not to have it around my house) I dont buy it, I dont store it even if its hidden I will find it *especially if I'm the one who hid it in the 1st place...hehehe* emoticon

I kinda compare it to like someone that has a drinkin or drug abuse problem (you will absolutely not let that person have "a little taste" cuz they won't be able to control themselves (the mentallity is ALL or NOTHING)

----------------------------
*BULIMIA HOW I DEAL WITH IT
----------------------------

(READ ABOVE) if I "fail" on ANY of those
the consequences are that I'll end up hating myself and my body for not being able to CONTROL what I eat
(yeah! i kno... pretty messed up thinkin....)

(by the way I havn't let bulimia take control even on the times that I "failed" or "slipped")
I HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL SINCE I STARTED MAY 18, 2008

THE WONDERFUL PART OF ALL IS THAT I'M ACTUALLY DOIN SUMTHIN BOUT IT AND THAT I'm FINALLY TAKING CONTROL AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE (not forgetting that I'm also letting GOD My Jesus My Savior be in control of all the things that ARE impossible for me)

OKAY! SOOOUUU..... emoticon
WHAT AM I DOING TO KICK DA POUNDS OFF? emoticon emoticon

**************************
I'M EATING CLEAN 100%
**************************
FOR SWEETS I TRY HEALTHY VERSIONS FOR EXAMPLE:
PEANUT BUTTER & STRAWBERRY JAM ON A WHOLE WHEAT PITA POCKET...Mmmm...Yummy... emoticon emoticon

***********************
EATING PROTEINS
***********************
I HAVE FOUND THAT IF I INCLUDE MORE PROTEINS ON EACH MEAL I USUALLY DONT GET "THOSE" CRAVINGS

**********************
CALORIE CYCLING
**********************
I ALLOW MYSELF TO HAVE A PIECE OF WHATEVER I LIKE ON MY HIGHER DAYS OF CALORIE CONSUMPTION WHICH ARE USUALLY BOUT 2 PER WEEK
(I will go to the store N buy the smallest version of what I like and buy JUST ONE!)(OR EAT HALF OF IT AND THROW THE REST AWAY)

visit the Calorie Cyclers Team for more info

**************************
STAYING ON THE WAGON
**************************
ITS HARD 4 ME TO GET BAK ON IT IF I SLIP SO I TRY NOT TO FALL OFF IT

OOOUUUU....K.....
I just wannit to share that if (me) with ALL of these disorders and eating habits (I'm) being able to succeed with Clean Eating, then ,
I guess that means that the cravings might not stop completly BUT you WILL have more CONTROL over each one of 'em

Remember that we are LEARNING New Healthy Habits and in order to brake The Old Ones the KEY is:
TO PERSEVERE as many times as possible

Hi Ya'll,

for chocolate cravings i like Yogi Tea in Chocolate and in Hazelnut. You can find them in your Organic Section of your grossery store.

of course,with a minimum of 'sugar' and 'cream' substitutes.

on the topic of multi-vitamin at night ... you should always take vitamins with food, otherwise your body doesn't absorb them properly. I take mine with breakfast.

wow! thanks everyone... it's a relief to know the cravings will eventually not be as strong...

i currently do take a multivitamin every night, because i have heard that a craving usually means that you are deficient in some kind of nutrient.... sometimes it just doesn't help! so yes, guess i'll hafta go out & get some high-quality chocolate to snack on if nothing else work... i also have chocolate protein powder, but sometimes that just doesn't do it :)

anyway... thanks for all the great advice. Keep it coming!

I used to work at a health food store, and the general concensus there (I don't have solid facts) was:
Chocolate creates the same physiological response as magnesium. Women are often short of magnesium (you need it to absorb calcium, and many of us take calcium supplements, but need Cal-Mag-Zinc so that the body can absorb and use the calcium. Your body 'grabs' any magnesium, otherwise, leaving you deficient).
Many people I worked with believed that if they upped their magnesium intake, the chocolate cravings abated.

Don't know -- but I know chocolate, more than anything else, seems to call our names.

I just started too so I don't have a whole lot of input but I've found the chocolate Larabars to be very satisfying. Actually, the chocolate mint Jocalat bar was surprisingly treatlike. The only ingredients in the regular chocolate flavor are dates, almonds, walnuts, cocoa powder, cocoa mass, cashews. (I have one in my desk.) Also, when I used to "diet" and I had a craving, I would exercise a bit (quick walk around the block)and that seemed to help. Hang in there!!

Starting June 23, 2008 and lasting for exactly one month, minus July 1, my birthday, I will not eat any processed "junk" foods or sweets. It's an experiment to see if I'll feel more energetic. Please see my blog and keep me motivated to stick with the experiment!!

Well... I am not a totally "clean eater". But I was able to get "freed-up" from junk-foods and sweets.

I believe it took about 6 months or so for the cravings to stop. Basically, I just eliminated all bad foods from coming into the house and went cold turkey. I didn't allow myself to satisfy the craving by having a small serving.

I feel that I definitely had an addiction to sugar. Now I can be around foods that used to tempt me with no desire to eat them at all. I think sometimes the cravings may indicate that your body needs a certain nutrient... something else to think about.

Protein works for me. I seem to not have so many cravings when I'm eating alot of protein. Another thing is are you take a multivitamin? Sometimes cravings are just a lack of something your body needs. I think it's odd that we would crave chocolate when we are lacking nutrition but that's just what works for me. When I take my vitamins I have less cravings. To solve my sweet tooth I have a chocolate protein shake. It's still kind of high in cal. but, so is a candy bar and a shake is so much better for you. As for the soda craving I can't help you I really don't drink soda.

I really had some bad craving at first but they are getting better as I gradually eat cleaner. I have also noticed staying hydrated seems to help. I have some organic dark chocolate on hand when things to get bad but it is so rich that one square normally does the trick.

i just started clean eating about 3 weeks ago. I totally love it! i feel so much better, and i can definitely see the water retention & bloating disappearing from my body... usually, i'm totally fine... i feel satisfied & have no problems passing up my old vices (ice cream, chocolate, soda) BUT, when i DO get a craving, i can't seem to shake it... it's like it consumes my EVERY thought, and i HAVE to have it... i've tried just eating sweet fruits, making a clean smoothie, or drinking a glass of tea... nothing seems to work...any tips on how to deal with or curb cravings?? do those feelings eventually go away after you've eaten clean for awhile?
