I've bought the tofu hotdogs before. They're called SMART DOGS. They were pretty good, but not cheap. I'll have to examine the ingredients next time. But once you open them, you're suppose to eat them in 3-5 days. I won't keep regular hot dogs in my house. They are so gross to me. I'll have to look at the veggie ones to see what's in them.

Even my son liked the tofu dogs. I cut it up and put them in his homemade mac-n-cheese along with some peas.

You would think! But i have only seen a couple roadside stands, nothing really on a large scale, but this is only my second summer here, i am going to keep my eyes and ears open, maybe ask some of the locals when i got to the "corner store" he he he.. thats so funny.

I moved here from the St louis area, and BOY what a difference. I was worried they wouldn't have high speed internet! lol (I'd have to turn around and move back if that was the case, lol)

You must live near tons of farmers markets though. That's so much better. Our small farmers market just started here in our town. We have a bigger market about 20 minutes away, but one that I absolutely LOVE is in Ithaca, they have a HUGE organic market and HUGE organic farmers market. Granted, things are more expensive, but they are so much more fresher and healthier. I recently bought a 20lb jar of orange blossom honey.

I LOVE buying in bulk when I can. I'm actually buying 5 gallon pales with special tops to put grains in that will keep air out and pests as well out so they will be stored in bulk in our basement.

I plan to buy organic brown rice, wheat berries for milling flour as well as dried beans. It's SO much cheaper that way when you buy in bulk and store.

Anyways, getting off topic here, sorry. I'll be interested to see if walmart has them.

I'll look in walmart. I'll let ya know if I see anything. Sometimes it's so frustrating at the lack of healthy products you can find in small towns like i live. Walmart is our only grocery type store (SuperWalmart) in my town. You have to drive an hour to get to any place remotely civilized, lol.

I LOVE living in the country setting, but its rough when you are trying to find non traditional foods.

Usually you can find applegate farms at your local Healthfood Market or BIG grocery chain store in the "organic" section.

I haven't seen them yet at walmart, not that they don't have them and I just haven't seen them.

Let me know if they are there. I'm sure they'd have them at bargain prices if they are there. They are pretty steap but they taste pretty good. They have all beef hotdogs as you probably saw on their site. If you didn't see it, you can just go to the bottom of this thread and my link will take you directly to the beef hotdog where it shows there's no nitrates and has the caloric information for you to check out as well as the ingrediants listing.

I liked the recipe to make your own fruit/veggie spray to rid of most pesticides. I jotted it down for later use.

Apple-thing ones, lol.. Thats cute. I'll look at wally world and see if they have them.. but only if they have them in all beef, I just do not like pork.

The ONLY thing i dislike about living so far outside of a major city is the lack of shopping areas, thats why i look online sometimes to find different things.

Jlit, I am with you. I was huge with the Boca and Morningstar brands, Veggie products. I stopped buying just about anything pre packaged.

I try to stick with foods that have one ingredient. Fruits, veggies, fish, eggs, grains, nuts, some chicken, some beef (very little), no pork.

I'm adding a vote for Morningstar veggie dogs ... and their corndogs! Love 'em ... and I don't burp them up for the next 4 hours like the "real" ones.

Oh, I've never heard of Ives. They sound just delish!

JLITT62, I'm so sorry to see that your both working in different states. It certainly makes things a bit more complicated at times. My husband and I pushed through not really seeing much of each other while he was in school, working full time and interning full time. It was so hard sometimes, but we certainely enjoyed the time we DID spend with each other.

Here in Toronto the hot dog street vendors have Yves veggie dogs, I love them! I try eat plain tofu or tempeh at home, but when I'm on the run and need protein I get the Yves veggie dogs. I don't eat the whole bun.

Another vote for the applegate hot dogs here. They have several different kinds, tho, and some have way more calories & fat than others, so you need to read labels. On my own I don't eat them, but my husband loves them -- and I will eat them when he is here (long story, due to work we're living in 2 different states right now).

I will eat the occasional veggie hot dog, too, but I try to stay away from too much processed soy stuff, too -- it's still getting away from whole foods, to my mind, but I'm definitely no purist.

I won't buy hotdogs in the house, but if we are at a special event or something and Andrew wants one, he can. As for the organic ketchup, I buy the no name brand version and it has even less sugar than the organic Heinz version, plus it is cheaper.

Sam's Club (in Michigan) is where I bought the organic ketchup. It was not that expensive and it's a big enough bottle that we won't have to buy it for a while!

You could also make your own Ketchup. It's easy, you know whats going in them and they store well in a canning jar.

1 can tomato paste
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon cloves
2 tablespoons cider vinegar

Mix ingrediants together and cover. Next you'll refrigerate it. You'll find there's not as many preservatives. Though the downside is you'll need to use it up in a month or so or it'll go bad.

I gave my kids the boca veggie dogs but their hot pink color turned my stomach.. but I was't eating them so I guess it doesn't matter. I'll check out the organic ketchup... my hubby will love that.. another item that I could buy cheap but choose a more expensive one... (We buy/bought ketchup at sames in bulk my kids eat so much.. )

Hi BATIK,

I saw that ep & REFUSE to eat or purchase hotdogs for that reason. *gaggs* ewwwww fat, organs and hairy snouts!

it kills me to think of how many hot dogs i've eaten in the pass *gaggs*

AER1977, my husband and I were joking about The Great Outdoors as we were reading the posts, and then saw yours!! We love that movie!

Our kids only eat Hebrew Nationals if I have anything to say about it. I doubt that they're clean, but my kids still like them once in a while. My husband still eats the "other" kind. I don't think we get Applegate in this neck of the woods.

On another note: regular ketchup is really bad for you. It's mostly high fructose corn syrup. Heinz makes an organic ketchup that tastes the same and doesn't have HFCS (but it's loaded with sugar).

If you ever watch BBC's "You Are What You Eat", Gillian Mc Keith showed what was in the regular hot dogs by piling fat, organs and hairy snouts on a bun. That turned my stomach so bad that I can't even eat the kosher hot dogs anymore!emoticon

Your talking about regular hotdogs. There are hotdogs out there that have just beef, just tofu, etc. If you look at the ingredients on Applegate it will tell you EXACTLY whats in them.

I agree with the regular hotdogs. While my Haufmann hots are AWESOME in taste, they are loaded with who knows what....which is why we don't buy them anymore.

I seen the thread for hot dogs, and i just thought to myself, eww.

I just can't see how eating hot dogs can be considered clean eating?

My grandpa use to make jokes about the ingredients in hot dogs, says its all the leftovers from the slaughter, lol.

Also... chorizo, I use to love that stuff, UNTIL i read the ingredients. Check it out the next time your in the store, gross!

Applegate if you look at the package on the link, says they don't have nitrates in them. You have to look close to the package though.

They're good, but pricey.

You may also want to try the meatless hot dogs over with the tofu and the vegetarian foods. They would be the cleanest dog.

To me they're not THE BEST, Hauffmann Hotdogs and Coneys are THE BEST. But if your asking if they're the best for you? Yes! They are Kosher hotdogs. Kosher is all natural. I'm not Jewish, so maybe someone with Jewish background can tell you a bit more, but there are certain things they cannot eat. It goes back to Old Testament times where everything eaten should be clean. God gave a list of unclean animals and such which shouldn't be eaten for those times. Again, I believe someone with a more Jewish background could explain much better than I, but I believe their principals are taken from the old testament and they are to eat only Kosher products. I'm not sure if it's all the time or just during special times.

So I suppose those hotdogs are pretty good or the all natural applegate farms which I'll add a link to their site for information applegatefarms.com/Products/Details.aspx?P
