There is a link of salvia species. It is in the mint family. A lot of weird things are part of this group.

I would like more of a definition of the jell stuff. I have real problems with texture. Okra seeds make me gag. So is it like that?

You mention tapioca texture. Like small pearl tapioca? Not that bubble tapioca (ew chewy drink)?

I'll have to see how big the bags are are. Actually I'll probably go to the bulk store. They have all the good stuff.

you shouldn't have to pay over $10 per pound and a pound is a lot because it is very light.

I have started back here in Feb 2012 after putting some weight back on. I lost 114lbs here previously and I now know I need this community and the food tracker to keep me in check.

I had seen an article last month about this stuff in the free health magazine that my local grocery store puts out. I went to see if it was for sale at the store, and both sizes of bag were sold out!! One bag was 17.99, and the other 25.99. I'll have to look elsewhere.

I knew we were going to be on the road all day yesterday so i added a TBLS to my water bottle.. I kinda like the bit of jell.. Steve likes it with water and lemon real cold but I am fine with it room temp. I forgot about mentioning the energy pickup..

Great info about the Salba/chia, I may have to look for that. For those large protein bars, when I get ones that are too high cal for me, I cut in half and eat them that way. Depends on how good they are.

DH and I use chia a lot in baking/cooking. We let it gel and use it as an egg replacer, and we add it to bread and waffles, etc. We also mix chia with water and drink it straight as quick energy drink. Like KFGal said, there is no taste. I am not crazy about the way it gels, though, so I usually down it pretty fast!
I really appreciate all your info, KFGal - now we have some new things to try!

I would order it online if I didn't have access to it locally.. the seed keeps for a long period of time. it doesn't need to be refrigerated.

I guess when I think about it the best way to describe it when it is swollen up with liquids it is a bit like tapioca.

Cool information about the salba. Unfortunately I now live in a rural area and the nearest whole foods grocery store is about 100 miles away. Does anybody order it online?

You know what I found interesting is that salba's botanical name is salvia hispanica L. - salvia is generally considered sage. I wonder exactly how related it is to the sage we know and use as an herb. Interesting to know about it being one and the same as chia. The gentleman at the booth said his salba comes from Peru but his literature talks about it originating in Mexico and being a superfood of the Aztecs. Interesting article actually. I hadn't read it until you mentioned it's history. ;)

There are only a few specific brands being sampled at the show. For instance, Clif isn't there... just a few protein bar manufacturers that are trying to widen their distribution (I guess). I'm here primarily to figure out how we want our booth to look as we redesign ours. LOL... Although the convention has been informative. It gets me thinking, which I guess is the point! Anyhow, I ate entirely too much tonight and definitely not clean so I'm feeling pretty miserable but have to get up in 6.5 hours assuming I get to bed NOW. Off to bed with a brick in my stomach... Why oh why did I eat the desserts placed in front of me? Something about good food going to waste echoing in my head. I need to remember that letting it go to waste is better than spending a lifetime on my thighs (not to mention the discomfort of overeating!)

Good night!

this seed doesn't have a hard texture like flax does.. it is very soft and very tiny.. it would probably take 20 or so chia seeds to make 1 flax seed in size.

taste doesn't bother me as much as texture. I usually grind flaxseed in my protein shakes or in my cereals...

no.. I put it in and stir it and wait a bit and stir it a bit more.. let it sit about 10 minutes so the seed has a chance to swell up.. it makes the best gel.. it's really hard to describe. I have mine in my juice in the fig now for morning.. I like it when it is fully swollen.. it has no taste of it's own and takes on the taste of whatever you add it to.

Salba is nothing more than Chia seed. I use it everyday and its a great grain. It's the same thing they do chia pets with but I don't sprout it. It has more calcium, omega 3' and fiber than flax does and it really should be part of your diet.

It is coming out in a bunch of different names right now but you can buy it at a health food store in bulk.. I pay $7.50lb

I add it to warm water and make a jel out of it, then I add it to almond butter.. sometimes I will mix half a tub of almond butter with one cup of chia jell and a tablespoon of honey and keep it in the frig that way.. it's great on Ezekiel muffins or whatever kind of bread you use.. I love it on Wasa 7grain crackers.

I also add it to my juice.. this morning I had 2tbls in a 8oz cup of cranberry juice. 2tbls has 56 calories. Chia really keeps you full and the health benefits are great. The Native Americans and the Aztecs used it as a main staple. I have a couple links I will dig up and add t this post for you.

You can also make jelly with Chia.. I warm some juice in the microwave to just warm, then stir in the chia seed with a wire whisk.. let it sit about 10 minutes and wisk again.. put it in the frig and in the morning you have jelly.. no sugar or pectin needed.. It's a really versatile little seed.

Have a nice day, debbie emoticon

great hearing from you! Interesting. I'll check it out. Here in TX not too up with 'exotic' food. I miss Boston...

I agree about the muscle milk. And has to be super cold to enjoy. If you ever find a good on the go protein drink or bar let me know (something that fits the clean diet bill. I'm addicted to it!) Right now I just eat fruit and unsalted almonds as after workout snack for the drive home from the gym.

I'm at a grocery convention (for lack of a better description) and ran across a new grain called Salba. Anybody ever hear of it?

It is sold at Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Wegemans (sp?) HEB etc... and widely available in Canada. Really good tortilla chips, salsas (they add it in), pretzel twists, pretzel twists, whole wheat tortillas and flatbreads. It tastes pretty nutty. Looking at the nutrition facts for the whole grain (1 tbsp) or the ground product (2 tbsp):
calories 65
fat 4g (.4g sat fat, 0 trans, 2740mg omega-3, 760mg omega-6, 250mg omega-9, 0.23g monounsaturated fat,
0 cholesterol
2mg sodium
79g potassium
4.5g carbs
4.1g fiber (.4 soluble, 3.7g insoluble)
2.5g protein.

Pretty good nutritional profile, I thought.

Anyhow, I really liked the product and felt it was one that has a lot of potential in the whole/natural foods arena. The distributor has a website www.salbasmart.com

I tried Muscle Milk for the first time.... odd aftertaste. Not my thing. There were different energy drinks but kind of funky marketing if you ask me. Some really tasty protein bars (with calories to match). One extremely good tasting one is Supreme Protein, but it is so high in calories I can't imagine using it. I have 2 sample bars but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them because they are so high that they are practically candybars. What is up with that??? Both small ones are 200 calories with 15g protein and they have a jumbo one for 400! And then I got a sample from the Peanut Board but no nutritional info. Tons of peanuts so it has to be high in cal! Anyhow... it was fun walking the floor today. I swear you can just walk and get full from samples. At least there were plenty of berries and veggies to fill me up too! :) If any of you are interested in anything let me know and I'd be glad to keep an eye out. I plan to walk the floor again tomorrow but for now I'm pooped out! Hopefully I walked enough to burn off some of those calories! Especially for the not so clean or healthy choices I made (Nestle, Pepperidge Farms, Dreyers were all there... need I say more?)
