That's odd. I can find it at every grocery store I go to. I live in Portland and the local Kroger chain has it, so does Safeway but I usually just buy it from Trader Joes.

Depending on the store it's in the rice/beans/grains/pasta section or the natural/organic/nutritional section. Trader Joes it's near the Couscous/rice/and pasta.

I buy all my organics at ocean state job lot (I know, weird...) BUT the product I buy is Bob's Red Mill http://www.bobsredmill.com/ They have everything and you can usually find this stuff in the "organic" food section of your supermarket. If you can't locate it in a local store, you can order it from the link I left in this post :)

I will never give up... I will just keep searching for my diamond in the rough.

Now on to Amaranth.. I am having it for breakfast tomorrow morning with Flax and blackberries. It has a really high protein count as well as high in fiber. I bought it last weekend but haven't yet had a chance to try it.

Have a great day, debbie

I have started back here in Feb 2012 after putting some weight back on. I lost 114lbs here previously and I now know I need this community and the food tracker to keep me in check.

Doh! My husband found it in the health section of Kroger. AUGHHH! I looked there twice (the second time with employees) - I must have looked right at it and didn't see it. I finally got a couple of packages and look forward to trying it in recipes! Thanks for all the input. I feel silly now!

Believe it or not I found mine at a local (West Coast only) chain that targets the lower-middle economic class. They have a bulk section and that is where they have it. I haven't found it in the "regular" middle to upper economic class stores but know that at least one of them would order and stock it for me (many will, so definitely ask). We don't have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods nearby (also about 45-60 miles away) and I live in California! ;) Chances are that you'll find it somewhere you least expect it, and when doing that, may find a favorite new store/resource for some natural/clean eating. Good luck!

Our Kroger is really good about ordering items if you request them, you might give that a try. Speak directly with the grocery manager (we have something called the Natural Market in our Kroger - if you have one, speak to that department manager). Have the brand name ready to go - Bob's Red Mill is a popular brand that our Kroger sells and they have a good quinoa. The manager may have you fill out a request form. I've had Kroger order several items and it usually doesn't take that long for them to come in.

Good luck!

I made the Quinoa spaghetti noodles tonight with a tomato/veggie sauce and they were great! My teen son scarfed them down and said he really enjoyed the taste and texture. I liked them better than the 100% whole wheat noodles.

Quinoa is pronounced Keen-wa and it is a whole grain.. it cooks up a little like tapioca and has a little tail.. you have to rinse it before cooking and it is wonderful in soups. I always have it in the house.

Many smiles to you, debbie

I looked at every place I shopped for over a month until I found a good source locally at a large health food store. They not only have it bulk but have it packaged by several companies. They have quinoa made into flour and noodles too! I also bought some spaghetti noodles made from quinoa. You can order online here

ShakenBake - REALLY?! That's good to know. I plan to go to HEB one day this week. I did tell them it was a grain, we checked there first and a gang of employees and I went all over the store checking all the different sections just in case (in Kroger and Randalls). Hahhaa, at least now I know my local grocery employees :). I have to go back to Kroger anyway because with both my husband and I eating clean, we're not used to eating so many fruits, veggies, and protein that we keep running out. I'm finally getting over my fear of buying too much produce now that we're constantly going to the store. We used to buy it and couldn't eat it all before it went bad - not anymore!!

I actually live SE of Houston (Houston is a huge city) and there isn't a Whole Foods anywhere close.

I live in West Houston and I buy mine at HEB, Central Market,Whole Foods, Kroger and Randalls. You might tell them it is a grain.

Surely you have a Whole Foods in Houston!? I bet HEB does have quinoa though, I used to live in a really poor part of San Antonio and even that HEB had it. Good luck!

BREES2 - Yes I've looked in the natural food sections, the rice/couscous section, the pasta section, the dry beans section with no luck. I live in SE of Houston... they aren't as healthy conscious as Colorado :( My husband and I are actually trying to relocate to CO!

I live in Colorado and shop at both a Kroger's chain and a Safeway. Have you looking in the natural foods section? That's where they carry it here. Look for the natural versions of mac & cheese, couscouse, rice, etc. The brand I buy is called Ancient Harvest. It's in a green box. Hope that helps.

Are there any small health food stores near you? I don't know where you live, but it sounds like you have a lot of stores around you. Often there are small stores that people don't even realize are there. Just call them first and check.

I have not been able to find Quinoa. When I ask the sales clerks at the grocery store they are bewildered - asking every employee in the store and no one has heard of it. I've checked at Kroger Signature, Randall's (Safeway), and Super Target. There is an HEB that is way out of the way that I haven't tried yet... does anyone know if they carry it? I really really wish we had a Whole Foods here!! I have to drive all the way downtown to find one (40+ min).

What section do you usually find it in? Thanks for your help in advance! emoticon
