I used to count them and it really got my weight loss off to a great start. Then I thought I was doing well enough that I didn't need to count them. I ended up gaining weight and so now I'm back to counting.

I haven't been counting calories. I'm trying to follow the advice of Paul Mckenna to listen to my body's cues and eat slowly. I do put my food into the nutrition tracker sometimes just to see how I'm doing on nutrients. I am having a hard time meeting my daily needs of calcium, potassium, magnesium and folate.

Far away in the sunshine are my highest inspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see the beauty, believe in them and try to follow where they lead...

Lovebeam, are you using the spark nutrtion page to count your calories? When you enter a fresh fruit or veggie, it will give you the option to choose the size. I have food scale at home and I do weigh a lot of my foods. For figuring out the calories in recipes you can use sparkrecipes recipe calculator. You enter in all ingredients and how many servings the recipe makes and it will give the nutritional info per serving.

I really need help with the measuring.
1. I know how to measue cooked veggies but not raw. They are too long or big to fit in a meauring cup like lettuc or raw carrots.
2. Do you weight all your meats.
3.How do you mearue a recipe. Ex: tonight i had turkey meatloaf and i took a slice of it but i don't know whow to enter it. The other night i had spinish, onions and chick peas how to enter that??

I count my calories. I eat a ton of fruits and veggies and I have found ways of getting protein and fats in that are really low cal. Cottage cheese is great as well as hummus.

CHP4golf,I had to giggle when I read you eat like a soldier on leave....funny!!!

I did not measure this weekend. I TRIED to keep it clean for the most part, but I did have 2 adult beverages and Cadbury mini eggs!!!

Over the weekend I did stick to my exercise program as well and weighed in this morning at 118lbs.
Up .5lb.

Not too shabby for all the eating that I covered this weekend:)

Honestly, some days I do better than others. For example this last Easter weekend, I was like a soldier out on leave!! I partook of everything except Alcohol. Went to this awesome Seafood Buffet(ate 85% crab legs)almost no breaded foods. Sat. had a great workout day between golf and the gym. Sunday got invoted to a wonderful Easter lunch.
I DID NOT MEASURE A THING!! Not to mention the fantastic cigar I had Friday night!! WOW!! Think I enjoyed myself? yep. Back to the plan today.

I do. I think until you are able to really gauge your hunger and know when to start and stop eating, then you don't need to track so much.
We also have to remember that those meal plans in the book are for people who are working out heavily. You don't require quite as much protein if you aren't lifting as much weight as she is! Clean Eating Mag's meal plans are more appropriate for the average person looking to lose, with cals ranging from 1400 to 1800 per day.

If you follow the 5-6mini meals, complex carb & lean protein combo, and keep portions in check, I really don't think we have to track calories. BUT, it is a good idea, especially if we are just starting out, to get a feel for what combos work and what calorie range works best for us in losing weight or even maintain.

I still track all my food mostly to make sure I am not under-eating or even over-eating. I also like to keep track of other stuff like fiber, sodium & cholesterol. When I get to my goal weight, maybe I will be comfortable enough not to track every single day :)

I track my calories everyday since I started sparks. You need to track in order to lose. I think I will stop counting everyday when I'm in my maintenance stage, where I can just eat clean as a lifestyle.

Not every calorie but I do know pretty much what I am eating around because I stick to mainly the same kind of stuff. Not over eating works for me better than counting everything. 5-6 mini meals.

Thanks for starting this post. This is something that's been confusing me for a while, because I've been counting calories the whole time, but since I've been following her plan, my calories have been higher, which doesn't seem to make sense that it would help me to lose weight. I guess it's better to use as a guide, also -easier.

Thanks everyone . I have continued to track the calories because I feel i could easily go overboard if left unregulated. That is how i got to this stage to begin with. I do however agree with the clean eating for health reasons aside from weight loss. It is a great way to fuel your body.

I track my food, but more for the protein, fat and carb totals than for calories. That is why sometimes I am over on my calories. My trainer wants me to have a diet high in protein and good carbs, but sometimes I just have to have something else!

CHP4golf, I totally agree with you about Tosca's experience with her food and metabolism...I still see myself as learning the new skill of eating for health for life.

So if logging my food every day give me that confidence so be it!!!

yep I count mine!

in my opinion I have to count my calories to make sure I do not slip down the slope of (free eating). If I try to eye ball what I think my calories are I either go 400-500 calories over what is comfortable for me, or I go 200-300 under which after my workout is actually starving my body.

I feel that if I count my calories even if it is roughly and not STRICT but with in 20-50 cal then I stay in control and the food does not take over.

Do not forget Tosca has been doing this for how many years? She can probably gage in her mind where she is at. Her metabolism and workout routine are probably so high she does not worry as much about extra calories.

I also count calories. On days that I actually stay in my recommended calories my snacks are fruits, veggies and cottage cheese. I can't do the full 6 meals unless they are super mini which I find hard to prepare and eat with my family.

You can laugh or cry at the many obstacles we face. Frankly, I would rather laugh...at least that way you fit in a little ab workout!

Hi I still log and keep my calories well within my maintaining range.

Amyd, I do breakfast lunch and dinner and yes my extra food seem to be fruit and veggies (i still consider these free food:!!)
If I do as the the book suggest I start putting back on the weight.
Now I know everyones different so this may not be the case with everyone.

I have the same problem. If I eat 6 small meals like the book suggests, then I end up going over my calories. If I just eat 4 or 5, I end up starving and eating stuff that's bad. I don't know really how to work this other than to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and make the in-between meals strictly fruits or veggies. Any other suggestions?

I do still count my calories and log all of them as well. Until I can do this faithfully without having to think about it I will continue to count them. I still have a lot of weight to lose too.

Have a great day, debbie emoticon

I have started back here in Feb 2012 after putting some weight back on. I lost 114lbs here previously and I now know I need this community and the food tracker to keep me in check.

Hi Everyone!

I have been reading Tosca's books and also the oxygen mag and clean eating mag. I noticed Tosca said she doesn't worry about calorie counting. Do you all still count your calories? I noticed that a lot of the foods add up to quite a few calories in the day. How do you keep this in check? Im sort of confused. Thanks!
