Yes Anne, I am tracking here on spark. I like how I can see the different nutrients for each meal.

Jane that's emoticon

Are you keeping a food journal or tracking your nutrition here on SparkPeople? I find it helps a LOT.

In addition to logging on this site, I keep an old fashioned food journal (a simple, spiral bound notebook!) In it I write down everything I eat. At the end of each week, I go through and "Red Line" anything I shouldn't have had, or had too much of. It helps me see where any indulgences or overages have occured.
So far, so good...for all of January I only had one day when I went over my calories (by all of 75 calories!!!) and one day when I went over my carbohydrates limits.

For me...all these little things help.

Well, after 2 days of adjusting my protein and when I eat my carbs. I lost 2 lbs!! I know "results not typical!" But, still. Thanks everyone!

Jane,

You said; "I know I can lose on eating hardly anything all day and then a big dinner. "

"That is now healthy for anyone!!"
I think there's a typo in there, and you mean to type 'NOT healthy for anyone'...and you're right, it isn't.
And if you're only eating one large meal a day, that is likely to be the biggest reason your weight loss has stalled, protein levels have nothing to do with it, and changing them won't help!!!

Having an omelet or the green smoothie (yum) in the morning, and some protein and complex carbs at lunch, followed by your dinner, is definitely the way to go, and should kick-start your weight loss again.

You've already come a long way...so we know you can do it. emoticon

Thanks guys, I'm really trying to get a handle on this. I have been stalled out in my loss for quite awhile. It's not really just about the weight loss for me though. I know I can lose on eating hardly anything all day and then a big dinner. That is now healthy for anyone!! I want to be smaller, but I really want to be healthier. I'm going to try going with either and omelet or a green smoothie with whey powder in the morning and see how it goes.

Jane - I took a quick peek at your tracker and I am not an expert, but I will tell you what works for me.

I cannot do starchy carbs in the morning. No bread or cereal. Breakfast sets the tone for my day.

And because I do weight training and exercise at least 6 days a week, my protein is around 100 gr a day. Higher than most, but I have found it works for me. And it definitely is an individual thing.

Jane,

I'm glad that you've used the SparkPeople figures to measure how much protein YOU need, because you must have entered some data which would five you the correct range.

Protein is not a fixed number for any of us...there are so many reasons why one person might need more, or less than the next person, so finding your quantity is important.
For those of us who do a lot of exercise, particularly weight lifting, our protein levels are higher than a light exerciser. Conversely, anyone with kidney issues would have to watch their protein intake and keep it on the lower side.

I hope you'll notice a difference in how your evenings go with regards to your "hunger" level. Give it a week or so, and let us know.

So...how many grams of protein do you think you get in a day? Today I will be at 88. Right in the middle of the Sparkpeople ranges.

Absolutely agree with Anne on upping the protein and lowering the carbs. If I start my day (like Friday with a muffin - what was I thinking) I am DOOMED. Protein shake/smoothie or egg white omlette - I am good to go.

Thanks Anne, I'm sure you are right. I just put my food for today in the nutrition tracker and realized that I am on the very low end for protein. I could double my protein for today and still be in range.

Jane,

I weigh everything. It's tedious but it's the only way I know to have proper portions and stay within my calorie range.

If you're feeling hungry towards evening time, you might want to check your carbohydrate level. If you have too many carbs and are in the slightest bit sensitive to them, your carbohydrate level could be a little high after lunch. Carbs = starches = sugars. Too many can make your blood sugar levels drop = hunger.
Try monitoring your carb and protein levels...get more protein and fewer carbs, and see if you notice any improvement in hunger levels in the evening.

I'm struggling a bit with portion control. It seems like when I try to eat clean I end up eating too much and my weight loss is stagnant. Do you all track your foods to stay in calorie range? I think I am eating too much at each small meal. I keep getting really hungry towards evening and snacking.

I LOVE my VitaMix, and highly recommend it. Not only does it make the best smoothies, but it purees soups, and makes flour from whole-grains.
It IS an expensive piece of equipment, but once you realize that it replaces a bunch of others...it is worth every penny.

Hi! I'm trying to go 100% clean. I'm currently weening off packaged oatmeal and yoplait yogurt. I love Greek Gods nonfat yogurt. I'm going to switch to steel cut oats. I'm going to start incorporating whole food shakes and I'm looking for good recipes. I'm also going to start researching for the best blender.

Eat Clean Recharged by Tosca Reno is what I am reading right now. Clean Eating magazine is an excellent resource with tons of recipes every issue. They actually have a little cut out page every month with all the guidelines for clean eating. Gracious Pantry website is also a really good resource.

What are some good resources for clean eating?! I need something that I can keep in my home to remind me of clean eating values. Lately, I've been eating junk, so maybe having a book or magazine around can keep me in the right frame of mind when I go to grab something to eat.

Good morning! I joined this team for ideas and support for clean eating. I lost 25 lbs last year by cooking from Clean Eating mag and following the general guidelines. I strayed in Nov and Dec due to family issues and holidays. I discovered I'm not quite as mentally/emotionally strong as I thought and I'm working on that. I have been back to clean since Monday and I have already lost 5 lbs. It's the sodium. It's so easy to be low sodium when you are eating clean. I got Eat Clean Recharged from the library and I'm now following more of the principles. I am eating every 3 hours or so and making sure to combine foods properly. I feel so much better after a couple of days of sugar withdrawal. I'm so ready to get to my goal weight so I can move on to the maintenance part of my life.

My husband is eating clean with me so it's very easy. I am fixing a date night at home dinner tonight. Cornish hen,(1 split between us), roasted cauliflower brussels sprouts, and fennel, tomato and roasted red pepper soup and apple crisp for dessert.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi Everyone, I just thought I'd join this group since I took the summer to get emotionally ready and now I'm completely excited and ready to start eating healthier and not just smaller portions. I think this group will help me to understand food more and about how to balance my diet in the most efficient way.

Incredibly so!

I love knowing that even when I don't get a good night's sleep the night before, I still have energy and focus. I'm tired from lacking sleep, but I can run errands, exercise, clean the house, do laundry, and have the DESIRE to make a healthful meal vs just asking hubby to pick something up on his way home.

I never really understood for meaning of the phase "Food is fuel" until these past few weeks. I enjoy my food and treats, but I can totally see how food either supports and propels you or it takes away from you leaving you drained, fogy, and irritable.

Thank you and I wish you luck and happiness as well. It's such a wonderful feeling and I want everyone to feel this good!

NewGoal,

I have to say I am loving eating clean! As the weeks go by you will enjoy it more and more!

We had friends come over last night unexpectedly so we ended up going out to dinner. DH and I have pretty much sworn off dining out for the most part as it's overly priced and we walk out of there having had a mediocre meal that leaves us in pain... lots of pain. Anywho, our friends have absolutely no interest in clean foods and healthy for then are "weight watchers" labeled foods. We ended up are Johnny Carino's Italian and it was awful! The food was so salty, so processed tasting I couldn't eat more than 5 bites. DH was horribly sick last night and I was starving when we got home. This morning he woke up and told me that although he doesn't like the thought of eating clean, he likes how it makes him feel. He said he hasn't felt sick once in anyway since I've been cooking clean, now almost 3 weeks. We ate Fast Food and that Dinner out this holiday weekend and I can say without a doubt, that I enjoy cooking and eating at home more than I ever could eating out. I never thought I'd say it, but I feel amazing when I eat in a way that supports my life, not drains it.

As a side note, the scale is moving slowly, very slowly, but my jeans are loose! CE is doing wonders for the fat storage in my waist and thighs!

Good morning, one and all. I've been eating clean for about a week and I'm loving it. It takes a bit of getting used to - since I'm still figuring out where to shop.

I hope everyone had a great day...

Good morning KitKat and other wonderful team mates.

I am soooo excited. Yesterday was my first day of eating clean plant-based! My smoothie blender hadn't arrived but I made do with common sense choices, water, exercise, and rest. I lost 2.6 lbs!!! I know of course that this isn't 2.6 lbs of fat. However, I haven't had this kind of success for years!!!

Have a wonderful holiday week. Stay strong and focussed. If you falter and fall, forgive yourself and get back on track.

Hugs

Wishing everyone success with their eating clean goals. I try to set a new one each week, and a long term one 3 monthly. Portion control is an issue for me too:) I really wrestled with my munchi demons yesterday. I do find drinking 2 glasses of water with my meal does help me manage much better. So simple yet easily forgotten. Anyway, hope everyone has a fabulous upcoming week.

Happy Thursday everyone.

NewGoal: "Just?" I think eating clean is paramount in everyone's program. Congrats! and keep up the great work.

I just finalized my program details. If you want to, read my blog. I'm busy cleaning out my kitchen of toxic "food items" and it feels liberating!

I'm listening to "Food Nation" on Audible. It is a very thorough history and looksie at the fast food industry. Very interesting!

Have a great day everyone.

Good Morning new team mates. I read down a bit and I also have a problem with portions. I can't do the "stop when you've had enough" school of portion sizes, so I rely heavily on standard portions outlined by the "authorities." Still measuring all the time is a bit cumbersome.

I hope your new smoothie regiment goes well for you Karen. Me, this is my second day of eating clean and I'm just looking eating better food.

Good morning ladies. I've been reading a bit down the page. Portion control on fish is a disaster. Fish doesn't fill me up at all. I have to have a large salad with it and then I feel a bit fuller.

I'm getting my BlendTec blender soon for my green smooties. It will be interesting to find out how full I am after a blender full of nutritious, delicious greens and fruit.

Have a great day and keep sharing. I am learning loads.

oh, I find portion control to be very difficult too. I'm trying to use a bit of an ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) take on it: Eat my pre-planned portion, go do something else for a while, and if i'm still hungry later, have more.

Yes, eating clean is awesome but portion control is still key. I struggle when I cook fish. I could pack away a whole salmon... I try to stop at 3 or 4 oz. but struggle nonetheless less:)

Do you ever find that you eat clean but still OVER eat? For example, I may have just had 2 cups of soy nuts .. equal to over 1500 calories..

I hope today and everyday you always find a reason to SMILE.

Clean Eating magazine cookbook, I will look into that:) I have the Eat Clean Diet cookbook and love it - some of the ingredients are a bit of pain to find, but well worth the effort cruising the local health food stores. Once the pantry is stocked it's smooth sailing:) Wishing everyone a great week.

My favourite cookbook is

The Best of Clean Eating: Over 200 Mouthwatering Recipes to Keep You Lean and Healthy by Clean Eating Magazine.

Tosca Reno has just released "Just the Rules" for her Clean Eating diet series (I think it's released today) but I haven't read it yet. I read her Clean Eating Diet Recharged which is quite good. I prefer the Clean Eating magazine cookbook recipes though - they're a bit more "normal" with their ingredients.

I also subscribe to Clean Eating Magazine... it's very good.

Good luck!

I'm not sure - check the ingredients list on the packet... they probably are. They have enough natural sugars... I don't suppose they need more.

Oh and I forgot to mention - someone recommended the Clean Eating Magazine Cookbook - and I love it! So thanks for the recommendation! I've cooked lots of different recipes from there and they are all awesome. I've bought a copy for my brother. It also comes with a subscription offer - 2 free issues of Clean Eating Magazine which I also love.

I can't wait for the second cookbook to be released in November!

Oh, and I tried Tosca's breakfast with the soaked oats and I didn't like it.... back on Kashi Go Lean Crunch topped up with some ground flax seed, hemp hearts, yoghurt and fresh blueberries. I love it!

Hope you're all enjoying your food - I really love the difference it's making.

Hi, I'm trying to eat as clean as possible... this week I was not as good for my preparation - as I take my own lunch to work and it's been grilled turkey with some wild rice medley and salad... which works well. But I didn't get the turkey this weekend so I've been struggling.

I found a can of Wolfgang Puck's chicken and noodle soup so brought that in with a whole wheat bread roll... When I calculated the calories and nutrition (the serving size is 250ml - the can is 398ml - yes, thank you Mr Puck, that's not the most helpful nutritional label!) the sodium is a whopping 1544mg per can!

I couldn't believe it! At least I will have a week before my next weigh in to drop that salt! Man on Man! Organic yes but hold the salt please!

Hi Everyone,
I'm on day 3 of eating clean (not counting breakfast on Tuesday) and right now I feel so good. I keep forgetting how alive good foods feel as opposed to how fake foods make me feel like crud.

Hi
well today I tried the same breakfast that she talks about in her book,
I cooked some quick oats (plane) topped with strawberrys and wheat germ
and one scrambled egg,
I thought this was way too much food but it did fill me out and I was not so hungry by 10 am in the morning which I had my snack which was a protien bar then lunch veggies and chicken and fruit.
I wsh dinner was a little more healthier but I am getting there hubby made meat loaf which I had with two small salt potatos no salt

but I got to tell you I have been eating clean and working it in to have all my meals be really clean I am feeling much better
and have lost 2 lbs which my weight loss has slowed so much down after loosing my first 90

Hi Sarah welcome to the team glad your here
well good news I was so worried about the fact that I was eating more that I was going to gain
well I lost two pounds this week, I have been eating two extra times per day so I start out with morning breakfast then mid morning snack of a yogurt or zone bar then lunch and then I am having that after noon 3:30 Snack , either fuit or almonds or sunflower seeds and then dinner I still am not getting in a snack after that cuz really I am full and I am really not too hungry and I have been going to bed early and not having that night light on in the hall so all these little chages are helping..
and I am really proud..

Thanks, stay positive everyone

New to the team and just wanting to say hi :)

I've been following the Eat-Clean Diet for some time now to maintain my weight, but have managed to have more slip-ups than I would like to over the course of this summer and looking for newfound motivation to get back on track. . emoticon

I HIGHLY recommend the "Tuna Salad Sandwich" out of the Meal Plans of the July Clean Eating Magazine!

I'm not a mayo person, so I always do tuna with mustard.

I was a little sceptical of this idea, but it is really good:

Tuna (I use a 2.6 oz pouch)
Greek yogurt (I use 2 Tbs)
chopped almonds (I use 2 Tbs sliced)
1 Tbs unsweetened coconut

The yogurt and almonds are smaller amounts than they recommend in the recipe (1/2 cup and 1/4 cup).

I've had this on an Ezekial tortilla and on 2 slices of Ezekial bread. YUM! and very filling!!!

Hey team just checking in, I have been following the eat clean diet for two weeks now, I have lost 2 more lbs, because of the small changes I made besides me eating healthy before I started reading the book, I think I have learned alot in the past two weeks what I am doing is now eating more mini meals and I have to admit
I really hope this is going to help me loose more, I dont feel as shakey any more come 5pm and I know that is because my blood sugar is level and I dont tend to over eat at dinner or any meal matter of fact at lunch I could not finish it I stopped andput the salad down and called it quits I never ever done that before
well I am willing to do what ever it takes and I am feeling good

Have a good day all

Thanks March! Great tips. I'm going to try that with the veggies. My kids LOVE fruit, especially summer fruit, so there isn't really a problem in that department, its more snacks I have a problem with. And it's good to know I'm not alone.

Ava, you sound like a great mother. Sometimes my kids respond when I put the ball in their court, like an adventure we're on together. (What can we make with *carrots tonight, can *carrots go in a dessert, what would make Dad flipout over *carrots, etc).
Can bananas be baked? Do sugar snaps taste better cooked or raw? A no-silverware fingerfest with vegie-rich spagetti sauce over whole wheat noodles. (followed by sprinkler time, of course!).

Hi all, have been eating clean (mostly) for the last year or so. It's been a gradual process, but really feel like I'm in a good place. As for my family (have 2 kids 6 and 8), it's really hard to get them to eat clean. My husband buys them sugary cereals and that's a big battle in my house. I've tried making them cleaner versions of breads and snacks, but they are soooo picky! Any suggestions? My big issue is that I don't want them to feel deprived and that I'm taking something away from them. Just want to steer them in the right direction. Otherwise they are active and healthy kids.

Kathy congrats on a coupe of good days under your belt I really beleve that the more you wrok at this the easier it will get, I for one have been doing my own thing for over a year I have been able to loose over 80lbs, I guess you would say I am eating clean but there are areas that could be tweeked. today was my first full day of really following the plan that is in the book I was really rebelling about eating 6 meals I am a 3 meals with nothing inbtween gal, maybe be a morning snack and that is it. so toda I ate my breakfast, the mid morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack then dinner now they book says to have something in evening I m really having hard time with this one, not sure what to eat and really I dont want too. so I had a glass of skim milk..
we can do this that is for sure stay strong stay positive that is what this is all about

Hi all,

I joined this team some months ago, but have not been active and have not been eating clean either until the last few days. I reread the book and then got the one for family & kids too. Haven't finished that one yet. I am really excited to see what can happen with my weight if I commit 100% to this eating plan. So far, so good.

Last night I barbecued some steak and chicken breasts to have with either lunch or dinner. I always make my lunch the night before because I get lazy in the morning when I'm trying to get out the door. I've been taking a salad most days for a few weeks so the meat is to give me some new protein options to go with it.

I'm basically following cooler 2 since cooler 1 is for the last 10 pounds if I remember correctly.

Hi Cat welcome, I am also kind of new to the team, I just purchased the book last night dove right into it.. I am really going to study this, I have been on a weight loss journey for 2 years, I have lost over 80 lbs, I would like to loose about 50 more and it seems to be going sooooo slooowww.. I too was shocked when I read that eating right is a HUGE factor to a fit body, I thought you really had to be in the gym 4 to 6 hours a day, which I have not time, eating clean I know I can do.. I am so ready..

Have a great day everyone..
stay strong

Anita

Saying Hello!! I just joined this team after Sparking off and on for a few years. I have done some internet reading and talking with friends about clean eating, and am working towards more and more clean eating in my diet/lifestyle. I love to try new recipes and find new ways to use common ingredients. I am all about farmer's markets and locally grown/prepared produce and love most veggies and every fruit I can think of. My challenges are prep time (during the school year---I am a teacher) and preparing meals that my hubby and DD (age 7) will enjoy.
Looking forward to 'staying clean' with everyone here!!

For a quick lunch, I have salmon cakes. I make them ahead of time and freeze them. I can pop on out and microwave it, or take one out of the frig. early morning if I know I'm going to be busy, or take it frozen in the car and it will thaw out quickly in the summer.
See my recipe in my blog.

Salmon is very good for helping you loose weight too!

Raw vegies with ranch. Usually I'm so hungry at lunchtime, I'll eat anything. So it's a great time to get my raw vegies in. Quick to pack, too! Throw in a soy milk to keep the tummy happy longer.

Hi all, I'm new to the team! Can someone give me a quick rundown on what's best for lunches that you've found?? I have to pack something and usually in a hurry! What do you usually have?

Oh, wow, I keep reading the posts and they all say how great everyone's been doing! For me, worrying about caffeine or gum or oatmeal is a place I look forward to reach. Right now I have to focus on not eating Lay's or Doritos ever again, or cut down on the date cookies I drink my coffee with!
Bottom line is, I think you guys are doing really really good which is inspiring for me.

Anyone here eat overnight oats? If so, what kind of oats do you use and how long can they sit in the fridge? Mine turned out horribly mushy and I am looking for ideas - also let me know you add-ins if they are good too! ;)

Day 2- no sugar:

Plain yogurt tastes NASTY!!! I added some frozen rasberries thinking that would help. Nope!

Also, the brown rice I steamed last night was not cooked. Doh! I made it a couple of weeks ago and put too much water in the steamer but it still tasted good. This time I think I put too little water and it was undercooked. *sigh*

I CAN do this!

Make each day count!

General question. Does it bother you when you see someone else select a less healthy plate of food?

I had to stop myself saying something yesterday. Our hostess had set out a wonderful arrangement of fresh foods. There were also some white bread and processed products as she was covering all tastes and ages. The lady ahead of me loaded her plate with all the things that were processed and I just looked at the colour contrast between mine with veggies and salad and her plate, which looked beige and white and totally unappealing to me.

You can't exactly nudge a stranger and say, 'Hey, you might want to try some green on that plate.' There could have been many reasons why she was eating why she was.

However, that's when it hit me how much I'm truly enjoying my food these days!

I am excited! I found clean and no added sugar yogurt yesterday at Henry's. Woo hoo. I start my self inflicted no sugar x2 weeks on Monday. I am looking forward to that. I have been able to find lots of food options.

I begin eating clean on the first of the month. Although with the no sugar challenge most of what I will be eating will be clean already.

Have a great weekend!

Make each day count!

I am a recovering Diet Coke addict. I have "mostly" replaced that addiction w/an assortment of white, oolong and herbal teas. I still have periodic relapses, but for an extra incentive, I have discovered DC increases my cravings for junk food. Nothing goes better w/a high fat, high carb, high sodium meal than a sweet, fizzy can of chemicals. YUM!

I do feel better when I am off the soda. Drinking dilute tea all day keeps me much better hydrated. I also sleep better at night.

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and have been trying to clean up mine and my husband's diet. I don't eat a lot of processed food, or fast food. But we enjoy going out to a restaurant about once a week. I am trying to quit sugar. I have been using stevia in tea and cereal, is that OK to use? If not, which sugar substitute is alright to use?

Hi All! I am new to this clean eating thing but the concept is amazing and it already feels like such a relief to think of this as a lifestyle, not a diet. I am one of those people that binges when they are on a diet and I just want to feel healthier and stick to something better for my body than the ups and downs of dieting.

My question is - have any of you been able to quit soda? I am a diet pepsi lover and am toying with the idea of trying to switch to green tea, but it will be super hard I think and I just want to see if anyone here has done the switch off the diet crap and how they feel??? Any advice would be appreciated and I hope to post here more often so hello! :)

I almost picked up Ezekiel bread last week! Good to hear it was pretty good. I have a dry slice of 100% whole grain bread maybe twice a week, so something that I have to take out of the freezer to toast is fine.

Here's a sweet, nutritious treat - toasted garbanzo beans (chickpeas, but "garbanzo" is so Muppet :) I spritz them with a teeny amount of PAM and then lightly toss in Truvia and toast at 400 degrees for about 10 mins. Watch them carefully so they don't burn! Chickpeas are very nutritious but they do add up quickly. The toasted, sweet snack can be stored in an air-tight container for up to a week. Grab a 1/4 c. to munch slowly or sprinkle over salads!

Tried Ezekiel bread today for the first time. I have been trying to pay attention to important nutritional facts as I learn about them so when I realized how much more calories and sodium was in even the best wheat bread I sought out Ezekiel. It was not that bad. I was pleasantly surprised.
Between this team and my trainer I am learning the right way to eat tio be healthy.

Been working on eating clean but ran a report on this weeks nutrition and had an eye opener on how much sodium I am eating!
Now, even though I was eating sorta clean I have trying to figure out how to lower my sodium intake!

General question...what is guar gum? I've been trying to stay away from packaged foods, but I just don't have time to make my own bread...curious what a couple of ingredients on the label are, since the bread is supposed to be healthier. Also, what is soy lecithin and what does it do? Thanks!

Love clean eating. Helped me cross over that line to really feeling good, both physically and mentally. I haven't given up caffeine. I like my coffee and I am Ok with this. I still have sweet cravings and do indulge in some sesame candies (those small rectangle ones) a few times a week. Had some dark chocolate last week, but, didn't really care for it. That's a first, not loving chocolate. The point is, we have to live life. Sometimes that means having something sweet or something that may not be the best choice. As long as the majority of our choices are clean we are headed in the right direction.

Hi! I'm new to this team, hoping that this will help me break through my plateau. I eat fairly well, but need caffeine once in a while...I have a cup of coffee, no sodas or anything like that. Any tips? Sometimes I get cravings for sweet stuff that oranges can't simple cover.

It revolutionised my life. I used to catch 4 - 6 colds, coughs a year each making me feel bad for 3 weeks That's about 18 weeks feeling bad a year at least. Since I started to each clean (and that means no processed foods and certainly not sugar substitutes, aspartame, stevia or anything fake like that) I have felt so much better. The only food I am intolerant of is yeast so that rules out alcohol and bread.

Now I want to lose a few more pounds before we go to the Caribbean in July.

Love eating clean. Have been doing it for about 3 months. Never felt better and it is NOT about weight loss. Funny, a few weeks ago, on vacation, I HAD to have a hot dog. After just a few bits, I felt sick! My body did not want it. Goes to show, if we listen to our bodies, it will have us make the right decision. I totally crave mangos now.

Can you use Truvia? I have baked with that, I am new to clean eating and not sure if that one is allowed. It gets recommended a lot.

I'm wondering if anyone has baked with Stevia. I did so in my muffins, and it was GREAT, but I want to try it in cakes and granola. We grind our wheat and grains so I'd be using whole grains with the stevia. The muffins I made were WONDERFUL! Here is the link:
