I'm having a rough week. All I want to do is curl up into a ball at home in bed and veg. A lot of the exercise workouts I see here seem to be for people who are already fit. Anything a little more feasible for older, overweight people with physical limitations? Hello! Is anyone listening out there???

Howdy, friends!

Sorry to hear about your disability income deficiencies, Johnathan. I have some friends who are struggling to get by in this economy. Food has become so expensive, but hopefully as we pull out of the recession, things will get better.

I injured my knee a couple of weeks ago, so I've been having difficulty keeping up with my 10,000 steps a day program. Went to the doctor and she said my knee is unstable because of the surgery I had in 2010, so I should wear a knee brace when I walk long distances or exercise. So, bought a knee brace and started wearing it, and I think it's working, although my knee still hurts somewhat. If after acupuncture and massage next week it still hurts, I'll go to an orthopedist and see if there's something else that can be done.

I may still be able to meet my goal of walking Metro Paris via the 10,0000 steps website www.10000steps.org.au/ but I doubt I'll make my own personal goal of 300,000 steps this month. Oh well, I can try again in June.

I'm using the hypnosis CD, and I've actually noticed that I'm not eating as much. Let's hope this continues! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes it certainly does throw kinks into our lives. The only good thing is that we come out better people. I'm going to begin my recording on June 2nd, the day after my 60th birthday. I should be able by then to have myself organized (have to get some groceries, etc. but am on a fixed disability income which after paying the bills doesn't leave me much at all for groceries). Good thing walking is free!!! My supper is provided for a subsidized rate of $60 monthly so that's a big help - only thing is you get what you get.

Keep on track my friend, you're doing wonderfully!!

Your friend,

Jonathan emoticon

Oh yes, you wanted a larger photo of Scarlett, I'm going to try and send you one.

Johnathan, that is so amazing that you lost so much weight, but I definitely know how easy it is to gain weight when you are suffering from depression; that's a constant challenge for me. It is so difficult when you have to put an animal down; I had to put one of my cats down last December and I also cried for days.

Paula, I'm so sorry to hear about your kidney stone and your dog. It seems like life really throws us some curves sometimes.

I wanted to let you both know about a book/weight loss program I've started. It's a hypnotherapy program by Paul McKenna. It's called Hypnotic Gastric Band, and it's been very successful for people in Britain, and now the U.S. It's a book, DVD and CD package, and first it teaches you this "Havening" process, which is part meditation and eye and hand movements that help to raise your serotonin level when you are under stress or having emotional discomfort, to make you feel better. The book explains that many people who suffer from depression eat to raise their serotonin levels, and that when they diet, they don't get as much serotonin and they feel worse. So the havening process is very important for controlling stress and/or depression during the hypnotherapy program. The program is a hypnotism that convinces your subconscious that you have had a gastric band placed around your stomach, and causes you to eat less. Check it out on google; it's really pretty interesting. I'm still in the preparation stage for my "surgery". I'll keep you posted. Take care, --Tara

Hello AREOFLOT57, I joined this group awhile ago but am just getting around to do some blogging. Over the past year ending at last Christmas, I had taken off 100+lbs. Unfortunately, I let myself go then (beautiful buffet at the hotel where my Mum took me). Since then I haven't got back to what I had been doing previously. The result of all this - I regained 27lbs. I now want to take those off and maybe 6 more. I was so close, but life throws you curves you don't expect. I endured through those but the depression I had during this time didn't help.

You're probably going to miss not having your daughter around, at least in the short term. I expect there'll be many phonecalls!

Good luck in rearranging your home and in neeting your daily goals!

Hello again PMSLIVES! I registered for this group and lo and behold here you are! So sorry to hear about the passing of your dog. I bet he was an integral part of your family just as the dogs my sons have are to them. I've been around having to put a couple of ours down, I went into the room and just held them while the vet did what had to be done. When it was all over, I cried and cried. Over time I got over my grief and I think the best thing we ever did was to get another dog who needed a home and lots of love.

Once again my congratulations for getting out today and having your walk. My best wishes for your speedy healing, both physically and emotionally. I think you're awesome to be doing what you are.

Hugs, Jonathan

Life sure has its balance. Just as you get used to things one way they seem to switch up on us and we have to get used to things a new way. I don't know if I told you my dog passed away on Palm Sunday. I thought I would get to work on my side yard and either have a garden or nice grass, but then I got a kidney stone and it seems that though that has passed it caused my back to go out of whack and I'm still struggling with that. Best laid plans. Glad you get your exercise room back.

My daughter is moving back out in two weeks, so then I'll have room to set up my exercise room again, and pull out the belly dancing DVDs. This will be the first time we have no kids living in the house with us. I'll miss having Rachael around, but it will be nice to have the house back the way I want it.

That's when we both started. I did win a DVD a year or so ago myself, but That was the first big thing I had seen on the wheel. Through some checking around (I don't know what it was I clicked on) it seemed some people win multiple times some pretty good things. Guess it is just the luck of the spin. Enjoy the DVD.

Vitamin Shoppe is pretty reasonable, and they have online ordering and free shipping for over $25 orders. Take a nice, relaxing hot bath and listens to Chopin's Nocturnes, if you have them. I love his piano music.

Yes, olive oil is great, and especially look into olive leaf extract, at the Vitamin Shoppe (you can order online and get free shipping) or at your local health food store.

Happy Easter to you! emoticon We are trying to finish up with some of the stuff so we can leave my "sister's place" tomorrow. Just saw your entry and thought I would touch base with you. Breakfast sounded satisfying! So sorry about your Mother-in-Law. That is sad and hard to watch. I hope the olive stuff is helping. We do a lot of coconut oil (raw virgin). It is supposed to help with many of the same things and help with the mind. I'll look into the Olive oil.

My Easter morning breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and left over Kung Pao Chicken and Vegetables. Flashback to my twenties when I would eat cold pizza or cold Chinese food for breakfast.

I actually warmed it up this morning, and mixed the eggs up with the Chinese food. It was good, and will hold me over until Easter dinner at 3 pm. We're bringing the food over to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law's apartment, since my mother-in-law is bedridden. She's wasting away, poor thing. Has trouble swallowing, and has no appetite. Trying to mix olive oil in her food and olive leaf extract to help her immune system.

I've been doing a lot of research on the olive leaf extract--you should try it. Helps with inflammation, and helps the immune system and fat burning system . Check it out on the internet, may really help you feel better. I started taking 1000 mg a day, since I have high cholesterol and diabetes, put Ralph on 1000 mg a day for his high blood pressure, and got my sister-in-law, daughter, and son to start taking 500 mg a day to help protect their immune system. Will keep you posted as to how everyone's doing in eight weeks.

That was the clinical test trial--in eight weeks helped bring down BP, cholesterol, Triglycerides, and sugar levels. Also helped people with infections and stomach disorders. I know the people in the Mediterranean are a lot healthier than we are, and a big part of that is from eating olives, olive oil, and olive leaves.

It has been a long day and being away I am behind on logging in so I think I will just say Hi for now and write at a more convenient time.

I posted a blog entry about this book I found for 50 cents at a used book store while on my birthday holiday, Food--Your Miracle Medicine--How Food Can Prevent and Cure over 100 Symptoms and Problems (Paperback) by Jean Carper.

Good way to solve health issues without taking medicines that have side effects. Really interesting. You should check it out.

I had a fantastic time walking on the beach in the mornings as I watched the sun rise; seeing all the pelicans flying overhead and diving into the water hunting for breakfast, and the sandpipers running along the wake, searching for theirs. My blue heaven.

True, time off excitement might do it. Have a great relaxing time. I have time to spend with family in about a week. Have stuff to settle.

Can you believe they are predicting 1-3 inches of snow this weekend and temps in the 60's next week around here?

I've been trying hard to watch my eating, but I'm not having much luck losing. I'm finally holding steady now and hope it remains that way and starts to go down when I can get outside and do some bike riding.

Think positive...this was just an off night it won't happen again. So have another small cup of coffee, but not too late!

I'm glad to report she is doing quite well. Animals seem to handle things better than people. If they get depressed they handle that better than us, too, I think. Maybe it is because if they sleep a lot after surgery we tell ourselves that is what they need (and it really is), but we always have so much to keep up with we don't take that time for ourselves.
Tara, what is the "Group F" on the end of the topic here? Do you remember? Were there Groups A-E also and this was the only one that kept up?

Yeah, going to the vet is like taking a child to the pediatrician. Scary and sad. We take such good care of our animals, which makes them live longer, but eventually time catches up with their bodies, and they start getting all kinds of ailments the way we do as we age. None of us appreciates our youth the way we should!

How true.
Yesterday we had to take Lucky in to be spayed. She kept getting an infection and the vet said she would need stronger antibiotics and maybe later need progesterone to keep her uterus and vagina from doing whatever it would be doing from not being bred. Eventually he said she would probably need surgery. I guess he thought we wouldn't want that, but when he has put her on meds it seems to make her sicker and we have almost lost her a couple of times. He let us see the operation (I thought bill would want to, I went in to watch a couple of times but wanted to stay out of the way). She is doing well, but the hardest part was watching them put her under. They shaved most of the hair from her belly and that was sad because she had just regrown it . Lucky had gotten so pudgy when she was sick at other times (comfort over feeding) that her belly dragged and wore of the hair. We had had her on a diet and she was doing great losing enough get that belly off the ground. So it was sad to have them shave it all off again. It will grow back though, I know that. Yay.

That's why it's so true that if we enjoy what we are doing, we're more likely to do it, than if you try to make yourself "exercise" doing stuff you don't really enjoy. I love to walk, and explore, and I love to dance. I just wish my job didn't interfere so much with my life.

That's the way I am when working in the yard. I'm fine for hours and then suddenly I can hardly move or at least stand up straight.

Well, I really overdid it on Sunday, so yesterday I could barely move, but I got acupuncture and massage, and now I'm fine. Sometimes I get into the "zone", and I can really overdo, and it feels fantastic until I stop. Then my body suddenly remembers how old it is.

I can feel your organization need and desire. Everything always seems to get in the way.

Yes, and every weekend, I tell myself I'm going to get organized, and it never seems to work. I did some cooking last weekend, and we went to see my son and his gf's new apartment, so that was nice, but I need time to just veg, and then I need time to get organized for the week, but something always seems to interfere. Oh, well...practice makes perfect, I suppose.

Sorry to hear about your back. I would suppose you are or did put ice on it! I am finally over the pain I was having and sorry I didn't put ice on it as it was doing better by that time and got better, though if it hadn't I would have done it and your warming advice sounded good.

The sale of your mom's dishes sounded uplifting despite the back problem. I hope it will help with her "recovery" from the home invasion. That kind of thing can really make you distrustful of people and be hard to get over. And yeah you can now get something you needed.

I know what you mean about the exercises. I need to do some exercises for my legs and hips also. Who am I kidding, need them for everything!!

Hurt my back over the weekend, but for a good cause. Sold the antique dishware that was my Mom's that I've had advertised online for the last six months. There was three boxes of it, and I had to get them out, unwrap all the stuff, lay it out, then wrap it all up again and help her get it to her car. She had had her collection stolen in a house invasion last year, so I was glad to get the stuff to a good home with someone who will enjoy it, and maybe it will make up for some of what she lost. Now I'll have enough money to get a new dishwasher, since mine has been out of commission for 3 weeks. My back is better today, but yesterday I couldn't get out of bed on my own. Guess I better start doing some back exercises on a regular basis.

Just dress warmly and snuggle up in a blanket, but put the ice on that one spot. Maybe drink hot cocoa while you're doing it.

I agree, it does feel as if you are alone, even though you have a new family, your childhood kind of gets wiped out when your parents pass away. For me it was my eldest brother who was like a father, and then my mother. There's no one else who knows all the things from that part of my life that I can talk to without having to explain everything in monotonous detail. With your blood family, you can just say a word or two, and you both connect to that time instantly. It's hard not to have that.

Use that ice, and feel better! The hot cocoa and blankies will help.

Thanks for the kind words of advice. I can see where their truth is as it has been a difficult year having lost my dad just the year before, also. In some weird way losing your parents makes you feel alone. You know you aren't, but in my case at least there were certain things Mom and I talked about that I felt comfortable opening up about and things she spoke to me about that she would tell me she had no one else to talk to about. Now when those things come to mind or something develops on the subjects it feels empty or weird. I thank you for your understanding it helps knowing I haven't pushed you away.

I'm glad you have plans that make you feel, dare I say, pampered for your special weekend. Now I want to ask that you go back and delete or edit some of that info (Just for safety ok?)

So far the pain is doing better...I'm being careful. The ice is something I know I should do, but even writing this about putting it on that spot gives me the shivers...really, my face has a crazy pinched feeling just thinking about it, even though I know it would be best.

Think I will go make some cabbage vegetable soup now.

You recently suffered a loss, and that can be very hard on a person, both physically and mentally, so take good care of yourself and try to treat yourself with something every day, like listening to upbeat music, reading something you like, watching a favorite movie, going to a favorite place, etc. I had no clue how hard I would be hit by the loss of my mother, but it sent me into kind of a tailspin for three years, and I was super depressed and cynical about everything, so just be careful.

For the muscle, try ice to reduce the swelling. I know usually I want to put heat on everything, especially during cold weather, but actually ice will benefit you more. Just for 10-15 minutes, to keep swelling down and to promote healing.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Sorry I am probably not the one to motivate you right now. I think we both need a vacation!!
The stone has passed (I believe) which is good, but it seems like everyday there is some other ache or sharp pain. What is that about? Bill thinks I might have a small torn muscle just below my rib area. It really only hurts when I move in bed trying to change positions I think it is inflamed and am trying hard to not aggravate the area. I did manage to keep still most of the night and not aggravate it much. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The pizza always sounds good, but that salt can be a problem. Though I am more inclined to think it is other additives to ingredients like ham that may have that effect...perhaps MSG or nitrites, HFCS. If you don't make it yourself and go to your favorite place to enjoy a night out you are never quite sure what you are getting. Just the innocent change of one ingredient to save money could cause that headache I would think. I have gotten very cynical on so many things lately it seems. Well, life goes on.

How about that Vacation? You going away for your birthday this year? Are you taking off for your spot on the beach to walk and dance? Let's just dream and smile at people and they will wonder what we are up to...Ha ha ha.

How are things going? I'm trying to get motivated again. Probably need to go on my soup fast again. I ate Hawaiian pizza over the weekend, so now I feel kind of headachy and sluggish, but I'm back on track. I love Hawaiian pizza, even if it does give me a headache afterwards. Too much salt, I imagine.

It was in the 70s for a few days, with a breeze, but today it's back to being unbearably hot. Sorry about the kidney stone--sounds really painful. I was in a really lousy mood today; not sure why. Just one of those days I guess. Well, actually, that was yesterday, since it's now 5 minutes past midnight. Time for me to go to bed. Talk to you soon!

I was starting to feel better and even was thinking all was going well when I had a sudden twinge in my lover left side that was quite painful and got worse as the minutes went by...I have a kidney stone! Well that seems also to be passing but was bad for a few days. I wonder if the fall shook something loose. Suppose I will never really know that. I seem to get them infrequently and am lucky they pass rather quickly also.

We are at 56 right now and they say we could have strong winds and rain that could cause flooding...man we can't seem to have decent weather here. How is it down there, not too hot I hope.

Hope you're feeling much better today. I hate that when I end up ruining my groceries before I even get them into the house. That's one reason I stopped using plastic bags, and now I use the heavier reusable material bags to carry my groceries. I lost I don't know how many gallons of milk over the years, because the plastic bag would rip and there was my milk all over the parking lot.

Thanks for letting me know about Skylark in the team forum. I have been offline for a few days, so I have to play catch up.

Take care and feel better!
