We talk about motivation and think it always means 'get up and DO something'
What if it is also true that we need to motivate ourselves to slow down?
Just something to think about!

The link below is a perfect example of willpower. And yes, it just might take effort and thought to hold ourselves back. As you look at the video, ask yourself:
"Am I a Daisy at heart... or a Cooper?"
Enjoy:

Me? I'm a Daisy most of the time, but have to keep an eye on my inner Cooper or she just might gain strength.

Why call it a motivation 'boot camp'?
Quite simply: focus!!

Frequently people say... "I just need motivation".
Ummm....??
You cannot go to the store and pick it up from a shelf; going from wishing to moving is a step-by-step involvement of body and mind. No matter what we read or hear, the key is to START. Once we start acting upon positive plans, persisting builds this thing we call 'motivation'. No matter how small the effort, forward motion gains momentum.

Motivation and Boot Camp when combined mean "shake it up", but when we add 'toughlove', the concept is dynamic. It is wise to periodically revitalize what we do: whether in a lifestyle jouney or some other aspect of life (even household routines!). By coming to this page, most of us have a common thought: Its time to shake things up! Sometimes we just need a bit of a nudge.

My binges are a thing of the past, too. What a relief! They made me feel so out of control that I thought for sure I was nuts. The zombies are coming!!!
emoticon emoticon emoticon
I do unplanned eating at times, but it's never like the binges. I can always stop with a serving or two, and there was a time when I couldn't.

It's tempting fate, though, and it's feeding the old habit, giving it a toe in the door. For me, the "cheater" meals feel too much like a vacation, and I prefer to stay fairly consistent, on a daily basis, with what I eat. Also, I don't like to think of myself as a cheater. Once in that frame of mind, I have the ability to take it and run with it.
emoticon

Better long-term habits and portion control are what I'm working to improve. My daily food plans are simple, and I don't deny myself treats. Planning ahead really helps me. That's why, when I'm feeling weird, like last night, I know that I am in danger of getting into some unplanned eating. As usual, I am very glad that I skipped the extras and took my bath.

For "weight loss" alone, it's true that 3500 calories equals one lb of fat and that a cheater meal could be like putting oneself on "maintenance". Some people like that. They do really strict meals all week and eat whatever all week-end. If that's your thing, why not do it YOUR way?

YES run far away from the fridge! Haha. Books also get my mind away from eating.. songs as well.

Haven't binged in a while! YAY :D

Yes I am a huge fan of coach Dean's article. I nod after every sentence because of the huge resemblance of my life in the words!

Question:
Do you have cheat meals like once a week or 2?

Another Coach Dean fan!

I, too, have read and re-read his articles and daily blogs over and over, in an effort to sort things out and fight off the self-doubts. He is fabulous!

Writing down the urge works for me, too. My sudoku puzzle books are full of my notes in the margins.
emoticon

I'm feeling fat tonight, which usually signals the urges to peek out from the corners where they lay in wait for me to have weak moments. So, think I'll go take a hot bath and get in bed (upstairs away from the frig and pantry) with some escape literature.

Yes, it is such a huge obstacle standing in the way of a healthy lifestyle. And when I think about all these years I was reinforcing this habit over and over again every single day, doubts that it will ever go away start lingering in my head!

Me too! I know I have a bigger chance of not giving in to that if I completely distract myself, otherwise it'll be a negotiation battlefield and the odds are I'm probably going to lose that more times than win. :(

Thank you for putting it like that!
I do hope so. Keep focusing on changing not the weight but the habits, it's an approach I never took towards losing those kilos!

Something that I never tried before but I'm finding very helpful is writing down the urge, when I do that I don't feel "possessed" anymore. That's usually how I feel when I crave something!
Also I cannot tell you how many times I've logged in just to read one of Coach Dean's articles on emotional eating. They hit home for me so I've saved them to my favorites for easy quick dose of help!

haha ..smooches back to you too Thank you so so much!!

I think yeah, we try get through this together, and we'll be alright emoticon emoticon

We have learned to rely on the pleasures of food until it has become bigger and bigger as a habitual source of joy and relaxation. Thinking of food, first, is a tough habit to break, even when we know there are other interesting things to occupy our minds and our time.

Something that's helping me right now is the question, "Why is it so important to eat RIGHT NOW?"

I've also learned that I have a split second to start thinking about of doing something I like (besides eating) when the urges hit. Once I start debating with myself over "to eat or not to eat", it becomes harder to avoid zeroing in on food in my mind. I'm always glad AFTER I've resisted.

Whatever tools work for any of us, I believe the Spark People philosophy that we weaken old habits (of thinking and acting) by resisting them as often as we can and by strengthening new habits (to take their place) by thinking and doing new things we enjoy as often as we can.

What are you finding to be helpful in your journey to think about food less and other things more? Since we are all unique individuals, there's no ONE answer, another SP belief.

I'm amazed that my dishwasher is still working well. It was installed when the house was new, June of 1990. Wow! That's almost 21 yrs. Any day now, I may be standing at that sink with you, scrubbing by hand while I wait for a replacement. The washer, dryer, and stove are the same age as the dishwasher. Yikes! They could be in danger, too. The refrigerator was replaced last year. So, we're OK for cold stuff.

It feels like we just moved in here, and 20 years have flown past. Kids and appliances will definitely illustrate how fast time can move. My granddaughter, who was a baby when we moved here, will be graduating from college this year.

Here's more good news, besides the calories you are burning, scrubbing those dishes. We will have reached our weight goals by the time the next round of appliance purchases become necessary, in 20 yrs or so, and hopefully we will still be maintaining our weight in a healthy range.

Dishwasher quit working, and the repair-guy said it was dead, so we ordered a new one. But it won't be here & installed for another week.
It's a bummer, but my thinking is, I'm burning a few extra calories standing at the sink scrubbing.

That's a good one, ESBELL.

Here's one I was reading this morning.
"We grow neither better or worse as we get old, but more like ourselves."
--Mary Lamberton Becker

It was used to illustrate that aging tends to level the playing field. The author said that as demands to falsify ourselves lessen, we can more easily concentrate on being the person we truly are. The author also said that part of growing old and WISE is learning that TAKING CHARGE of our lives is different from trying to CONTROL our lives. We don't have to spin our wheels with "impression-management" (what others think of what we do). We can let of of the "shoulds" and the trying to "control" ourselves, per someone else's rules.

So, I agree with all of that. We at SP ARE making our own rules.

SP says planning, preparation and action steps are a big part of reaching goals that are truly ours.

SP recommends breaking the "BIG" goal down into manageable time frames, instead of letting it just drift along open-ended ("someday").

Setting a time, like the 12 weeks (or any other time that works for us personally), to commit to a set of personal action steps toward our goals is a way to do that. What do the rest of you think?

I've been drifting along open-ended since last August. And my weight's the same as it was then. Time to ask myself if that's what I want.

Today’s kickbutt mindset tip:

“Nobody gets old by surprise.” – Kekich Credo #84……Listen, 12 weeks is just 0.3% of a 75 year life…why not commit to making the next 12 weeks the best 12 weeks of your life? Plan, prepare, and take action. You can make dramatic changes in just a fraction of your lifespan.

Thanks, RLLRKAT and NAMMY! It amazes me, too, AFTER the fact. The process took a while.

I'm feeling good today. Last weekend, I was goofing off and felt like I was gradually losing some of the "spark" we need to keep going.

I posted the "exercise" I tried, a "gratitude journal" in our "Right Now" Challenge thread, as I was doing it, and then in a blog afterwards. It sounded too simple to work, and yet it did adjust my attitude and made sticking to my eating, sleeping and exercising plans much easier.

The "Right Now" Challenge is a monthly commitment to goals of our own choosing, whether weight loss or behavior. I'm signing up again for February.

I checked and my highest total cholesterol was 305. After losing 84 lbs and exercising consistently, I was able to get it down to 237. The doctors then felt I should take cholesterol medication to bring it down under 200.

This health stuff is important to me finally. Back in "the day", all I wanted was to fit into a pair of jeans.

This morning I was at the clinic for routine stuff and received the news that my total cholesterol is 188, my good is 108 and my bad is 68. I will have to look up the actual numbers, but it was all "up there" before I lost weight and started exercising.

I have changed my mind twice during today's football fun when I was already on my way to do some UNPLANNED eating.

A few minutes ago my hand was already on the tortilla chip bag and I decided to put the bag away and dip snap peas in my salsa instead. Still tasty, but it won't mess with my head. Besides, it's not too long until dinner. A light snack is best.

I think we've discovered one of my triggers.

Urges and excuses to give in come flying at me.

Close call. My only hope of changing my ways is to stick to my guns, especially when one of my triggers is involved.

I have come here to verbalize and reinforce my desire to stick with my plan.

Alrighty, then! You have spoken! End of story. Done deal, right?

Weight fluctuations can drive us batty. The scale owes you for last week. You're doing the right thing, not letting disappointment throw you off track. A downward trend will show up.

We can always gang up on your scale and beat the crap out of it, if it continues to cross you.
emoticon
I did well all week and ate a bit too much yesterday (watching football). This morning I didn't want to get on the scale. But since documenting my weight each morning for posterity (graphing to watch MY trends) is one of my action steps, I stepped aboard.

I felt relief (from negative thoughts about what I did) right away because I don't have to wonder all day how bad it was or wasn't. I can get on with today and make better decisions.

Onward!

LOL LOL Oh Barb, you are too funny! The power of words...those suggestive little bundles of letters. I did not see either of them but it must have been great fun. Betty White is just a treasure, isn't she? Maybe we could all benefit from a trip to St Oluf!

Enjoy your class and we, Muffin my dog and me!, will enjoy our walk! :)

You frightened me for a minute there, SUSIE, taking your little muffin for a walk, until I remembered it's your dog's name.

When Betty White was on Saturday Night Live she was in a "Delicious Dish" skit, talking about her muffin (private parts). It was similar to the Schwety Balls skit. Did you see either?

I'll be heading out tomorrow (Thurs) morning early, pilates class at 8:30, so I'd better go crash so that I have enough sleep.

Tomorrow is also my 3rd Sparkversary, 1095 days.

Our internet and phone comes through our cable company's "roadrunner" service, and it's still slow at times. I'm grateful it's not the kind of "dial-up" we had 20 yrs ago. That was nasty.

AOL is a trip, but like a fool, I keep using it.
As you said, "working now". That could change quickly. LOL!

My mail from SP was stopping repeatedly because of some kind of "glitch" (don't you love that word?) at AOL. SP would default to a check mark in the little box that says "don't ever send me email again" because AOL would say my email address was incorrect. Same email address as always.

Last week, AOL also started making me reset my password each time I signed on to get mail.

Apparently the "glitch" happened due to the new version of our security software that we renewed and updated at the beginning of the year.DH fought it out with the tekkies and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
emoticon
But enough about this thrilling subject. Time to get some ZZZZzzz.

I agree. Feeling "alone with it" just adds more to feel bad about.

It is so great that Coach tells it like it is, especially now while he's looking for personal answers to get himself out of trouble. It makes me admire and respect him even more.

He's showing us, not just telling us, that we will have to work at it, to survive our human imperfections and whatever life throws at us, that we can be strong and feel weak (all at the same time).

I much prefer that to pretenses, to avoid embarrassment, don't you?

EDIT: missed a word

Coach's blog just reminded me that life is a work in progress. It is not the end of our struggle when we reach goal weight. Far from it. There will always be problems we will have to deal with. It was courageous for Coach Dean to share them with us. We are all human and therefore susceptable to emotional, physical and heartfelt challenges. Together we can overcome them. Alone is just too hard.

I'm not meant to have a car, I guess.

I was at a party this afternoon and when I parked I didn't see a driveway that I partially blocked. My car is in Milwaukee's Tow Lot until Monday morning at 8.
emoticon emoticon
Can't win for losing.

My friend Vi, was at the party, too. She's been to so many of them this month that she says she can't wait for Jan 1st to get here so she can quit eating.

This afternoon my car wouldn't start, without being jumped. I drove it to the dealership and after I parked it, they couldn't get it to start again either.

So, finally I have a new battery. I wanted one a month ago when they said the battery was fine and fixed something related to the starter.

It was a thrill to have it malfunction for them, so that they could see for themselves that the battery was far from fine.

So, happy day. My wheels are rolling once more!

Nice to meet you, DEBBIE!!! Exclamation points are wonderful, especially since we can't see body language or smiling faces. I like ellipses...too...for my sentence...fragments...etc...grammar is out the window here...we're just talking.
emoticon emoticon

We ARE tough and we DO love...but with "just the facts, Baby!" We try to recognize our excuses and share them, to help us avoid falling for them repeatedly, like our habit has been. "Thinking" mistakes are the most challenging.

Personally, if I can spot something I'm thinking as an excuse or an "almost true" lie (like my example from a few days ago), it becomes easier and easier to respond better.

A friend told me that fast-food joints are stirring tigers and I'm their prey.
emoticon
That image keeps me driving past and smiling to myself, instead of doing my old habit of thinking, "Should I or shouldn't I?", and having my focus zero in on excuses to stop and garbage up. Excuses do sound like a good idea at the time, don't they?
emoticon

SUSIE, I think you've given me a new weapon to use when my mind drifts too far in the direction of unplanned eating. I can tell myself "Get a life!" to remind me that there are things I can do that I'll remember fondly instead of regret.

You are so right, SABRINA. Writing down what I eat gives me peace of mind and keeps me out of the river of denial.

I'm off to pilates class. YINZ have a good day.

I hadn't been on the scale in a week and I wasn't tracking the food. I told myself, "I'm eating a little extra, but generally OK, and it's the holidays."

Yesterday morning I got on the scales and it was nasty. I immediately began tracking the food again. I spent yesterday afternoon writing my blog,(Post-Mortems, Skinny B*tches & Lies!! Why?!!!) to clear my head and find some sense of direction. Writing helps me think.

This morning the weight was better. Mainly, I FEEL better and that I'm back in my routine. It's amazing the tricks we can play on our brains.

It's Sunday night and we took our youngest daughter out to celebrate her 44th birthday, which is actually tomorrow.

Funny, I don't feel any older than I did at this time 44 years ago when my DH was pacing the floor, asking if I could please deliver the baby before the end of the calendar year so that he could benefit from a whole year's tax deduction for her for 1966.

The "post-holiday" onslaught of diet commercials has already begun on TV. We will have plenty of company in January when we make healthy eating choices and exercise. Any special plans?

Here's an excerpt from our Sparkfriend's blog about the snowman poop. Can you guess who's blog it is?

"Today at work I'm going to be doing a class that will make reindeer poop and snowman poop, it's the cutest thing. You use mini marshmallows for the snowman and pretzel nuggets for the reindeer, put in baggy that says 'You have been naughty this year and all you're getting is REINDEER POOP. OR SNOWMAN POOP......'"
