The 'fun' part of signing to the mirror is the 'other' person you are signing to..is left handed!

Here is a thought for us..

Why don't we make our own video and post it here?

It doesn't have to be long..perhaps a word or a few words so we can learn by watchingfrom each other!

Your thoughts???

youtub has a good video made by peter cook and he does a story. it's douglas the space boy. Peter cook is a great asl storyteller. He came to the deaf school where I take classes last week and did stories for the kids. I wanted to see the event but I had to work.

I know I need to practice with a mirror too! Just not a convenient way to get a mirror next to my computer. I know many interpreter friends say they got a lot of benefit looking for and watching vlogs on YouTube or Vimeo etc of deaf people (or coda etc) signing. So I need to spend time on those videos too.

I will keep track and watch for that! I know when I have 'too much sugar' the ringing is so loud..even inn the deaf ear! Most of my sugar comes from fruit in my fruit smoothies!

I have made contact with a college here that offers an ASL class..but they have not replied back to me..

So I 'self-study' at Lifeprint.com and /or ASL University (mirror sites)!

This may be odd question but have you ever noticed eating something, like a meal, maybe it had more dairy in it, or more sugar, or even protein - I haven't figured out exactly what triggers - but at times, I can eat and then like 10-15 minutes after eating, I suddenly get a really shrill tinnitus. It's usually my left ear I think partly because it's deafer and so there's less outside distractions/noise interference to mask/block the tinnitus sound? But I definitely notice that the overall racket is much much lower and I've not had vertigo (which I self-diagnosed as Benign Positional Vertigo - bpv - because mine were always a tilt type deal, rather than a full 360 round and round, stop the merry-go-round blurr.)... so anyway, I discovered that all, especially with the corporate milk (pasteurized, homogenized, growth hormones, antibiotics, all that crud in the milk) really seemed to make all that tinnitus and vertigo flare up. After 6 months of that diet, my hearing improved so much that ENT said I didn't fall in the ranges where a cochlear implant could (morally/ethically/I was reading between the lines) be recommended. Pretty sure I made him mad. He really didn't seem happy with me at all, especially when I went through the diet protocol.

Oops. I just noticed I hijacked the thread....I'm not talking about ASL at all! SORRRRRRY!!

Too funny! I was a cyclist in the midwest as well..except I was in Colorado!

I am not sure if it is Meniere's..I read here on SP what it was and it fits me to a 'T' in all I have been dealing with! I need to go back to the ENT and have an MRI with contrast!

I woke up to the high pitch ringing in my ears and the pressure in my ears is ungodly right now.. Yet I keep moving forward!

What else can I do..ya know!

Gotta get kid ready for school. Remind me about my near-Meniere's experiences and how I connected it to a dairy intolerance and my vertigo and congestion went away when I went off of dairy and into soy milk (before I found out that was no good, and now use almond, coconut or hemp milks...)...

Hmmm we had a guy in Wichita that had Meniere's when I first joined SHHH (the precesser to HLAA), and he eventually moved out of Wichita (late 1980's and early 90's). He was also a distance biker bicyclist - a little older than me. But I haven't heard from him in years. Coincidence I guess. Same name (first). You just only recently discovered your Meniere's?

Wow, you are in New York?? You do realize that Rochester NY is like one of several "Deaf Mecca" type where the population is high for deaf/HH ? It's past my bedtime here almost midnight, I'll get some sleep and have some more coherent ideas later.

www.hearingloss.org is Hearing Loss Association of America - I've been a member since before, when they started 30-ish years ago as SHHH Self Help for Hard of Hearing

They tend to shy away from ASL and Cued Speech but really big on Hearing Aids and CI technology.

Has your doctor tested you for Meniere's? only you haven't mentioned dizziness so I don't know. But hearing does kind of come and go, from what I understand from others here who have Meniere's (I just invited a gal in another team to come check us out as she has meniere's.).

Rush Limbaugh lost his hearing suddenly and I never did really know if they figured out anything positive as the cause. He's using a CI now to hear.

I don't know that bad teeth necessarily causes deafness, but I suppose it is possible, if they were infected. I sure hope you didn't go to the dentist that the doctor recommended - might have been some "mutual benefit" going on. I've heard so many weird stories over the years.

I'm just a little younger than you, 55 last month, but basically my parents were incorrectly blood typed when they married, and so my mom was under mistaken and erroneous belief that she was a positive blood type. As it turns out, she was negative blood type. So they had an Rh factor going on before I was born. Now the medical history books will all say it doesn't affect the first born child, but what they conveniently leave out is that the first born child MAY NOT NECESSARILY be the First Pregnancy... So I didn't know any of this until in my 30's and 40's as other aspects of the family history became revealed to me. But basically because her blood type was typed wrong, and my sister had no problems, then my brother had some jaundice, but doctor (same doctor practice as the one that did not correctly identify my mom's blood type - and back in the 60's, they didn't type blood every time they saw you to make sure they had done the typing correctly) didn't associate it with the Rh, which is usually the case with children born with the opposite blood type. I don't know enough about it to know if my brother's hearing could eventually get worse himself? But evidently my hearing began declining shortly after my birth, although it was not officially diagnosed as a hearing loss until I was three years old.

It has declined about one decibel per ear, per year. I started off with about 35 decibel loss in the right ear, and 75 in the left ear, when I was finally diagnosed at age three. The last time I averaged out all the hearing losses charted on my various audiograms, it was about 70 dB hearing loss in my good ear and 100 dB in the left ear. (stating the loss as decibels lost instead of as "percentage loss" is supposedly more accurate, from what I learned over the years on the Hearing Loss Association of America site - www.hearingloss.org ).

Oh and before I forget, but this is a change of subject, only minutely - there is a Cued Speech group - I personally need to find someone to practice with and my family hasn't been willing, so far, and I tend to not rock the boat, but NCSA - National Cued Speech Association - www.ncsa.org I think, but I'm not looking it up, as I am getting wasted here and it's sleeeeepy time!!!

So we'll pick up on this later... I know I have gaps in my story, so feel free to ask questions...

I can bring you up to speed here..

I am 58.. I am deaf in my left ear. I am not sure just when it totally went. I knew it was hard to hear with it so I always compensated and turned my right ear toward the person/sound/noise whatever for clarity..
/music/people and the like..

Then about a year ago I noticed it was real hard to hear the TV/radio..Then one day..it was gone! I could not hear at all.. I went to an ENT and they diagnosed I was totally deaf in the left and recommended hearing aids. I can get one for the left ear that works on bluetooth technology and carries the sounds from my left side to the right ear. The ENT said my hearing loss was from 'infections' from bad teeth. so I have had all my teeth removed..and I still couldn't hear! It has come and gone a few times in the last year and they still don't know why. I am going to a specialist in Syracuse NY for an MRI with contrast and I was put on high doses of Prednisone (of which I have gained back 15 pounds..the stuff makes me vorasiously hungry)!

So I found Lifeprint.com and started my own studying. I study daily and practice the signs/letters in front of a mirror so I can see the sign from my side and see in the mirror what it looks like if someone was signing to me!

A great component is missing when I 'talk' to myself.. I am looking locally for classes to become more fluent..but to no avail!

I persevere..I always keep moving forward no matter the obstacle..!

Hi there -
I hadn't seen your comments as I guess I was only looking in the Daily Chat thing - but happy to hear you are learning some sign!

We used ASL /baby sign with my son when he was a baby, but once he hit the threes and could pronounce all the words he already could hear and understand and use correctly, he quit signing, and my hearing husband is "too busy" to deal with learning either. He might know 5 signs - "ILY", "finish" "water" etc. heh.

So ....I'm backpedaling through your blogs, to find out more about your interest in ASL. Are you losing hearing? or what's the story??

Welcome to SparkPeople and the Deaf/HH Sparkers team!!

so my girls and I are watching Switched at Birth. I had taken ASL one but haven't advanced much further.

Now we all want to excel at it. I'm a little learie with my limited vision, but my girls are so patient, we're going for it.

Any tips on websites or ideas on how to learn this without going to school for it?
