Hi Kathy -

well.... haha. I did get a power point together finally...but...we have 2003 PowerPoint. Then the teacher couldn't see the videos on his machine even though we could see them on my son's powerpoint (he has 2010 or 2013 I can't remember.). The slides worked fine, but it was just viewing the videos inside the slide that didn't work. Later, my husband discovered some family discount from his company so I may get that bought and downloaded soon. Just in case... as my friend wants to take some more online classes. I don't know yet what I want to do!!

As for husband's birthday well, it kinda came and went, mostly went to a restaurant to feed him. We're not terribly formal about gifts...birthdays and mother's/father's day are about the only time, since we are not Christmas observant at all. So if there's a stupendous deal on something I know he'd like, I get it and he gets it whenever and everyone's happy.

Julia,
Good luck with your classes. Hope you figured out something good for your husband's birthday. Mine has expensive taste in toys. LOL. Basic powerpoint is not that hard to do. I learned the basic when I was working. I can't do anything fancy with powerpoint, yet...but I did learn the basic.

So sorry I haven't been on any of the teams pages lately... Soon my classes will be done for the semester. I have a paper /"project" to do before Dec 1. Doing the research will be relatively easy, I think, but I'm not as familiar with using PowerPoint or similar programs. Ah well... No time like the present to learn. Today is my husband's birthday and I've no clue what to do. I also have an eye doctor visit and bazillions of other things that need to be done...take care and y'all have a great week!

Hi ya'll,

SparkGuy shared a very inspirational blog today about his 91 day streak of 10 minutes of exercise a day. I wanted to share it here!!

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5738162

Somehow, his comments made me feel relieved and know that life happens and I'm not a huge failure for not maintaining a 10 minute streak myself. And today, especially and the rest of the week, I know it will be struggle for me, as I need to be there for my best friend. Her youngest son, youngest child, who is only about 3.5 weeks younger than my son, was killed yesterday (sunday) morning just NE of Wichita, in a tragic accident that took his life and the lives of a woman and her mother-in-law on their way to her family (leaving behind two young children less than 5 years of age, I believe.). So senseless, so tragic, but somehow I gotta help us both through this. I know we're not alone. I know I'm not the only one to have experienced this either personally or through our friends. I know I need to maintain my own streak of ten minutes of exercise daily, just so I have something in my own health to share. (I know it's hard right now to think of a more precise way to explain what I'm feeling??).

In any case, fight the good fight, love your family, tomorrow is another day but it's not guaranteed that you or I or our loved ones will have a tomorrow.

Julia

Well.... let the confusion begin, as SparkPeople has made updates to all the SparkTeams - including removing the Huddle, Quick LInks, Links to Blogs etc. I just found out via email to Spark Team Leaders...Some of the changes are "behind the scenes" for the team leaders specifically, like sending team goodies in an easier way. But most of the changes will impact you, the team members. I can only pass along the suggestions back to the Spark Coaches and Administrative staff who make these changes. I already asked them if removing the Huddle segment also means we lost the points for huddling (up to 5 teams a day - if you huddled with 10 teams, you only got 5 points for the day.). I suspect we won't be happy with it. But - you can always go "give points" to your favorite team(s) - again, a max of 5 teams - up here in the upper left tab "Start", about the 3rd segment down, where the red "pennants" are.

Let me know what you miss the most, or like the most, and I can pass it along!

Thanks! and Spark On!!

Julia

And...it is springtime already. Looks like we are about due for a storm soon today or tomorrow. I need to get a walk in before bible study tonight. I bought my husband a spark activity tracker and he pretty much gets his goals in it every day, but the I don't get around myself like I should!!

Soooo, need to take care of that.

How is everyone else doing?

HEATHERSSPARKS and others who have set their pages to private - I haven't been able to send you a Spark Goodie, so whenever you feel up to making your SparkPage available to your teammates, I'm sure there will be more participation. I do seem to be motivated when I know others are reading my page. And you don't have to post your weight or other sensitive information on your activity tracker - you can use it to track anything, like how many minutes of exercise you do in a month, or how many days you go without smoking (I've seen that elsewhere), or other habits you would like to promote and develop.

Hope to see you all here later!

Well, I'm back. Actually I huddle 2-3 times a week and send in points from the new Spark Page. Just don't post a lot of messages in any team - not just this one! November has been busy. December will be anyway even though I do not observe Christmas for a variety of reasons, including no biblical basis. But that's just me. And I was curious if anyone here has gotten a Spark Activity Tracker? is it working well?? I bought one from Amazon that was from their Warehouse Deals, but mine seems to be a dud... so will need to see about sending it back. If it is ordered from SparkPeople, it costs more but there is a 30 day return window. So I don't know... will see what I decide to do later...too tired to deal with it now. I did walk some 24 minutes, just over 2 miles with my family this morning (and that was documented with my MapMyWalk iphone app, but Spark's Start Page says I have walked Zero Minutes!! Not Hardly!! The tracker itself lights up 4 lights, which basically means about 500 steps per light, towards my goal, or roughly 2000 steps. Oh well, I'm hoping to get this figured out soon!

Maritza- I'm in NC ;). A lot of groups are quiet here. I'm on like 9 groups but only really active in 1. I come here to the deaf group every once in a while to check in.

I know not all Latin American countries are the same. I grew up with my best friend from Mexico so lots of Spanish influence for me (I'm Texan). Nearly all my friends and boyfriends were Hispanic :). Even now in NC I have a great friend (and my oldest daughter's BFF) who is from Puerto Rico. I wish I spoke more Spanish (very minimal even with 2 yrs of high school classes) but that's because of my deafness. It's hard enough speaking the language around me lol- add the rolling r's and deep accent- no way I can lip-read Spanish :). However my heart will always be Mexican. My husband is a pastor and is going back to Leon, Mexico next summer. Wish I could go but have 5 very young kids :)

Anyhoo- Mondays are my weigh in and after months of being 231.8I broke through!!! 228.0 today woohoo!!! Eating salad for lunch everyday IS the answer. Going to keep that up. I'm off to the gym :). My 1st 5K is less than 2 weeks away!!

Maritza- how was the week for you? Did you meet any goals?

Today I'm heading to church, then right after a friend is having a baby shower- her first :) She's due in 5 weeks with a boy emoticon SUPER excited and just like my hubs predicted- I went overboard on the gifts- I always do. I LOVE baby showers (and weddings, and birthdays, and HEHEHE).

Didn't get to officially workout yesterday but took the kids to a festival and very slow walked there for an hour so... maybe maybe I'll get in a couple of miles tonight with Leslie Sansone Walk a Mile- we'll see.

Nice thing about being deaf- exercise people on the videos yammer at you, but we get to make up our own words in our heads lol. Who knows what Leslie is saying but to me it's something like- You can do it Erin! Go! emoticon

Be good ladies! emoticon

Hey Maritza! Welcome :)

For those wanting to learn signs check out ASL University online- http://www.lifeprint.com/index.htm It's a good start :)

My friend Tamara does a blog and on the side is her lessons we teach every Wednesday- http://silentheartministries.wordpress.com
/ Go to "Sign Language Education" and there's all the links and lessons.

Locally- if you happen to bump into a Deaf signing person or an interpreter- ASK them! There are Deaf clubs ALL OVER :) It only takes one chance meeting to get plugged in- so ASK :)

Hello all -
just checking in. I've been out of town, in Branson... Got to see a girl I met last year - she and her husband are fairly newly married, and she is CODA. She was encouraging me to pick up and start practicing my signing again...

Corinna- chances are unless you're in a tiny town there's a Deaf club or social in your area. Getting plugged into the local Deaf community if like you said the best way to learn. Immersion makes learning any language easier :)

I didn't become fluent till college (was mainstreamed and lived in a tiny town in TX. But had 3 deaf friends and did home signs growing up- with a lot of lip reading). Now I'm very grateful for ASL- can't imagine life without. It opened up my world. I have a deaf husband, deaf mother in law (lives with us), and 4 out of 5 of our kidlets are Deaf or HoH. My husband pastors a Deaf church in NC, and nearly all my friends (with the exception of our homeschool group) are Deaf signers. I wouldn't trade it for the world :).

I have a very slow blog I sometimes add videos to or random thoughts. There's some songs in ASL there if your curious- nothing truly special- www.Deaf-FiningLife.blogspot.com.

I asked my mother why we (my brother and I)) never learned sign...I never did get an answer. LOL

will check out the blog as I've been trying to learn myself. Also, we should start doing community deaf socials here....somewhere. I know we all live everywhere, but its nice to know the events are out there.

for example when I was taking ASL there are ice cream socials here I guess ... who knew? LOL

Wow, just read a blog discussing written by a deaf person who doesn't sign beyond basic level - and I felt a laser beam pointer glowing on my forehead reading it!! She wrote this one with links to eight websites that have free ASL lessons online... I think I will add them to our Team Links page...

Started the day with 2.3 mile walk but had to take the baby (in an umbrella stroller) and the 5 yr old- ouch. That was not a good idea lol since umbrella strollers are NOT made for walk/jogging. The 5 yr old poor girl begged and begged to go so I let her but she was tired by the first block. I'm proud of her she made it to the end of 2.3 miles (partly on my back lol)- hey strength resistance for me right?

So tonight oldest son (9) begged and begged for a walk so we walk/jogged together 1 mile. He's really good- he's done 2 miles before with me no problem. I think as time goes on he will end up doing track since he loves to walk with me so much.

I did eat horribly though so doubt I will lose this week. It's the end of the month and that means poverty for us. Being a family of 8 on a pastor's salary has its draw backs. First of the month- veggies fruits yummy good food, end of the month ramen noddles for a week emoticon Hurry up payday!! emoticon

There really isn't a lot on interesting anything as far as speeches. They are kind of more "yeah let's do this rah rah" so I don't know that you'd really need an interpreter or such.

The most serious speech I could imagine is maybe talking about charity events?

anyhow, if this is your first 5K I say go. Most are just for fun and that's what people do. I never have my hearing aids in and I don't think I miss anything. On my Reno Run or Dye, they didn't even time.

Wow, that's a thought - I've no idea! And I think maybe you touched on a "hidden fear" that has kept me from pursuing a goal of participating in a run like that? Years ago I did a 10K walk and I totally missed out on a lot of information as to where water was located etc. I guess I should be a bit more aggressive about advocating for myself.

Week 2 of Walk your way to 5K down and I'm starting to feel better when I walk Praise the Lord! I'm so excited about this 5K it;s crazy. I watch the promo video over and over like a dummy :giggle: I wonder... maybe I should think about asking an interpreter friend to join with me since there's going to be lots of speeches etc. I'm sure. and it's me and a deaf friend right now.... hmmm.... ADA probably doesn't cover 5K races right? emoticon

lol- too funny! Glad you didn't wreck the car though! emoticon

I'm having more and more trouble with drive thrus as well and there is NO WAY I'm going to drag 5 little kids into the restaurant every time so I just started driving up to the window to order. I'm really surprised how friendly the workers are! Used to they would get all huffy about you ordering at the windows but seems more people are aware these days- Praise God!

Hmmm be careful what you order! I was getting some KFC to go, and I asked for "Potato Wedges", because I knew I would be eating and driving back. I ate my chicken and my biscuit, and opened the container for the wedges...stuck my hand in there, and it was HOT MASHED POTATOS! Yipe!! Nearly wrecked my car!! Silly me, not checking everything before I left the store. Fail!!

Well I'm losing again after plateauing for so long :woot:

Can't remember if I shared but I am training for a 5K in October- The Color Run and really excited about that! I've never done a 5K before and so it's a good thing Spark People has a Walk Your Way to 5K program. I'm almost done with the second week's goals and I'm up to 2 miles a couple times a week. The first time I walked the neighborhood I got shin splints for 3 days! Ouch but finally I'm better and back on track. It's really nice to think exercising will be a daily thing for the rest of my life. Makes me feel accomplished somehow! Weirdo I am :)

My eyes are a bit fuzzy but I got to leave for group in a bit. Thinking I will go to the downtown Y after it is over.

Hey all! I'm back on track I think and heading to the gym in a bit. Hoping to make good eating choices and lose the weight I gained last week-

Keep up the good work all! :)

Hopeful Hippo- I'm sorry I had to laugh at your username- it is sooo cute I think I feel that way nearly everyday :P

I promised myself I'd be good today and well yeah-- not. Had a whey protein shake for breakfast, subway 9 grain 6 inch with black ham, avocados, spinach, cheese, and onions for lunch THEN my hubs had a pizza (oh man weakness!!) and my resolve crumbled like feta cheese- had 2 small slices of pepperoni dominos pizza. Tonight we have a back to school homeschool meeting and its a potluck- I'm in trouble.

Hi! Well today is weigh in for me and last week I took a whole week off for "staycation" with 2 of my 3 sisters and their kids visiting. Oy... up 3.4 lbs :( Well I guess this "game" isnt really a fair one. It takes me weeks on end to lose a 1 lb but I can gain it back overnight it seems.

Feeling blah and going to the motivational pages to try to cheer myself up. Going to need it to make it back onto the wagon..

Have a good week ladies and gents!
