Yep, it's a struggle alright. I was active in the Self Help for Hard of Hearing (SHHH) when it started in the mid 1980's. I wasn't in on the ground floor but joined in the 1987 or 88 time frame, just as I was going through my divorce. After 25 years, they changed names. I haven't been as active now that it is Hearing Loss Association of America. But yea, there does need to be a pushback...

I have tried to 'fight the system' for so long.. I feel like a renegade as the 'establishment' has made it clear that I am wrong for looking for a right..so much that their wrong is right..no 'rights'!

Yea... it's called "The cost of doing business" but technically they are not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. But, I know the internet in general has been whining and wheedling out of doing their duty to caption all material on the Internet, or to edit the video in such a way that it is accessible to all (like telling the story visually with no dialog or using other on -screen graphics to convey information. I'm a little out of date on the last legislation on the issue. Probably could find out more on the Hearing Loss Association of America page ( www.hearingloss.org ).

I noticed yesterday in SparkBlogs that they have combines their videos with Arcadia exercise videos to create new website Sparkpeople.tv . I couldn't tell any wee captioned. Will try to play with it today. We all need to try it and ask the Support and Coacjes about captioning content.

I don't 'beat myself up' . . LOL I just know my limitations right now..yet I continue to 'push the envelope'!

I sent out many emails asking folks if I can add them as a Friend..I received 2 replies.. I tell how I am looking for motivated people whom have had results and looking for advice..
Thus was the reason for a post a while back..Sometimes you have to go it alone..

I sent INDYGIRL an email..

As for me..I don't let others 'intimidate' me..I guess that is the word that came to mind when you commented about "don't compare yourselves to others" philopsophy. I have had 23 surgeries in my life thus far. My philosophy is.."If people don't like the look..Look the other way!" LOL

I will get to where I want to be..it may not be where others are..but I will be content..and I never settle for mediocrity!

Totally get that - the "b" rated shows with some of the gals on exercise videos. And being female, that also brings up various emotional issues with me, as if I didn't have enough problems struggling against the "don't compare yourselves to others" philopsophy of crazy-making!!

I can't do most of them too. Usually one person off to the side or the back is doing the "modifications" for those of us not as strong...but sometimes I have to dumb it down even farther. I figure 15 minutes of "mostly standing up" is quite a bit more exercise than me just sitting down on my rear end (like I am doing now!!) reading and reading and reading on the Internet!!

You might want to check out ~INDYGIRL 's blog and the guy - Robert ON2VICTORY - can't think of his SP name (looked it up - ON2VICTORY ) - both could barely do any exercise when they started. Their stories are awesome!! So don't beat yourself up, just do what you can!!

I enjoyed the links yall posted..I am just not ready/strong enough to do some of the regimens they suggest..yet I have a hope!

I set up my 'stuff' in the living room as the house is small! I am able to run a VGA cord from my laptop to my TV and enjoy whatever I want. I am an avid lip reader..yet when they do the cutaway shots..I miss a lot!

Even though I am 'male' ..I do not like the 'B shows' that happens with the videos..totally unnecessary!

A friend of mine does Shakeology and just sent me a text yesterday about their products. I work with a Nutritionist/Dietician so I will run it past her before I consider that path...I think I am doing well with this journey!

Ha ! I did the same thing. And I mention lack of captions repeatedly. Frequently. Over and Over. In Every Video I watch. In every survey I have filled out. For awhile, they did this SparkCoach thing and it always featured a video. They at least had a tiny link next to it where you could click to read the transcript so that was (usually) helpful.

I watched a few of the BL videos the other day on YouTube - and them, as with other exercise videos, frankly for me, it usually ends up being the men that I would rather watch because a) my hearing loss is in high frequency ranges, so the women's voices are too high pitched and beyond my headspace, and the men have lower pitched voices. There are a few women, and Jillian isn't too bad with her voice (but I had other issues...). and b) most of them just say "do this, in 3 2 1," etc, and they do it, not too much Chatty Cathy nonesense. In the Cize video, the guy there, Shaun, he does have a bit of patter going on to stir up the dead air and make it seem lively, but he still talks slower enough and it's got the captioning. So that's all good.

And I totally get you about the whole "BeachBody" name. I love the beach, I'll get wet, wade in the waves, get all sandy and the whole thing, but I prefer to cover up. Tired of the massive sunburns I used to get (I'm sure I have skin cancers just waiting to pop up but so far, nothing has been worrisome enough to head to the doctor. )...being married to my best friend, I really don't need or want to go through all the peacock show-off-body "mating rituals". For that reason, I prefer the female fitness instructors that are modestly covered up. So many of them just HAVE to bend over in front of the camera so we get a view between "the girls" or up between their legs - arrrgh.

I'm thinking farther down the topic lists of our team is a topic specifically for listing URL's to captioned exercise videos that we've discovered in our travels. I may need to go back and retest the URLS to make sure they still work.

Hey, Julia ....

I actually do have a friend who IS doing the BeachBody with Shakeology stuff to make money. Years ago, she actually won one a trip to the finale of Biggest Loser based on how much weight she lost. Sadly, though, due to stresses and moves from one state to another she's put it back on. She's no longer active with Biggest Loser nor SparkPeople. :-( But she is actively promoting BeachBody on her Facebook wall. I haven't looked into it cuz the name "beach body" doesn't grab me. I haven't been to a beach in YEARS let alone have a "beach body"! ;-/ (years being 1983)

I've only just started with the BL dvds, so I'm giving myself more time to get the feel of it. Just picked up 2 of the newest ones (from 2013) off amazon. Will go through it in the coming days. I much prefer Bob Harper anyday over Jillian Micheals. Today, is not my "scheduled" workout day. Yesterday was. I did upper body workouts with my arms having to clean my dang stove ahead of my Section 8 inspection today. Whew, glad it's done. :-)

Not too long ago, last month, I think. I got some kind of survey thing in email from sparkpeople. I believe it was about what people liked/didn't like with the exercises and videos. I DID in fact put in comment at the end about the LACK OF CAPTIONS for those of us who are hearing impaired/Deaf. Lord knows what will become of that. :-/

Time to finish up my emails and get some chores here done, namely laundry. :-)

Have a great weekend ..... supposed to be sunny and near 50 my way. ;-)

Hi Lin -

After reading someone else's blog about their negative experience with Biggest Loser and my own gut feeling about them, from watching an episode of it on my friend's cable tv system, I don't think I would use one of their dvd's if they had the audacity to PAY me to watch them.

However... this is one of my ongoing pet projects and/or peeves, which is one reason why I set this as a topic...and I am glad you commented because it reminds me that I need to share with ya'll a DVD I just recently bought.

And that is... well, this specific DVD is 'CIZE" from the Team Beachbody website. I understand it is cheaper (and none of the multilevel marketing direct sales type nonsense that you find on the various Facebook teams or on the Team Beachbody specifically - where they are very anxious to bundle the dvd's with their Shakeology drink mixes - so beware.).

Now I have a cluttered house and will have to WORK to clear out a space where I can actually do this workout. But a deaf/hh friend who is NOT on SparkPeople has lost quite a few inches and gained strength using these and other DVD from the Team Beachbody website. I think she mentioned she used CIZE, PiYo (a blended pilates/yoga work out) and a few others.

Best I can tell, the DVD's from this website (and again, you should be able to find sets cheaper on Amazon and perhaps eBay) ARE subtitled/captioned. I actually shot some video just handholding my iPhone in front of the little bitty dvd player I have. There are two sets of graphics shown on the screen - the one is sort of a count-down timer and a place where it says "next up..." name of exercise or step or whatever instructor is saying - and this info box is the far left corner, lower, on the screen and is on whether your dvd is in caption or subtitle mode, or if it is off.

The subtitling is centered and to the right, so that it does NOT interfere with the main info graphic on the left - which, to my mind, indicates that the people encoding the master with the caption subtitle information did a nice job, and took care to make sure all elements were visible.

I was using one of those portable DVD players where the screen is attached to the unit, so a person watching from a DVD that plugs in to a TV will need to ensure that the TV's built in caption chip is switched on, so that it doesn't inadvertently strip out the captioning coming in on the signal from the DVD player.

I'm also interested in the Kettleball thing too...

I know you said not interested in the YouTube - but I did find the ACE channel on YouTube has a LOT of exercise videos and the vast majority of them do seem to be captioned. I think I found a few that were not captioned. I think my channel with that playlist is public available, so if you want to search for me on YouTube it's under MSDRPEPPER .

So, I hope this helps you!!

If you want to see some of the titles that my friend used or if you are curious about the their marketing program to earn some money, here is Lois' site:
www.teambeachbody.com/loisndavid But I am telling you straight up they are wanting you to get involved in a monthly thing to get the DVD's bundled in with their shipments of Shakeology, and I haven't bought into that. I just bought the DVD through her site, never mind that I saw the exact same DVD set without Shakeology set, the same way I bought it, on Amazon for like $5-8 cheaper. On her site on Beachbody, upper right hand, underneath the frame for logging in, I clicked on "Shop" and then on "Fitness Products" to see the various DVD sets and descriptions.

Scrolling down, for example, the second one on my page is the CIZE link, and I click on the title, and it opens a new page
www.teambeachbody.com/workout
-routines
/cize
, and in the lower right, under the basic description is a "Learn More" and it opens up a video pop-up viewer - and in the Lower right hand corner of it is the CC button - click on that and you should be able to see the captions. And it's just that clear on my dvd player as well. I didn't look at every specific DVD fitness thing they offer, to see how the captioning plays on those as well.

I did a quick search by Kettleball and it didn't show up any results but a) it might be bundled in with one of the more complex programs and b) I might not have spelled it right!! I never can remember if it is kettleball or kettlebell ?? haha. oh you have it spelled bells. Let me go look again...).

Well, I can't tell. I got hits on kettlebells in the various forum discussions but I didn't look at every single program and their viewer. Many state in their intro that they have no equipment, and the photos just show dvds and some do show dvd and resistance bands. So may have to ask around on that.

Hope this helps!!

Julia

Hey, y'all! I've been looking for dvd's to purchase that are captioned. So far I've only found the Biggest Loser ones. :-( Not entirely interested in getting into the you tube bit largely because my Roku and tv are in the living room and my gym stuff with my old laptop as dvd player are in the bedroom. :-(

I've been trying to find good beginner dvds on kettlebells and weighted body bars. Not having a whole lotta luck. :-(

If anyone knows of any such, shoot me a message. Thanks :-)

WOW! WOW! WOW!

I just "discovered" #captioned Execrise Videos on YouTube!! I'm fairly sure I've seen some before, but the channel ACEFitness has (so far in the two I've seen so far) PROFESSIONALLY captioned video. It's not the "automatic captioning" rubbish we usually get from YouTube.

Soooo. I'm cautiously optimistic.

the three best triceps exercises (you know, to get rid of "bingo wings"?)...
youtu.be/pKQ-ClwtPOM

a 15 minute cardo - the captions didn't seem as nice as the first one above.
youtu.be/vWDXTCVDpCY

Back Pain Do's and Don'ts
youtu.be/pzDkY1zN510

Barbell workout (not as well done? or maybe my internet speeds are messed up?)
youtu.be/7zXSSCKrEvk

Well I just subscribed to the channel and I found some that were not captioned, like a Yoga flow exercise (however, that woman had a nice lower voice quality in her voice over - the video just sees her performing the yoga but not talking to the camera. So there's no talking head. But she's able to watch and record over the video and so the sound quality is better even though I don't understand everything she's saying.).

OOooh yea that too, looking away from the screen. Well I like to watch a video with captions on a couple of times to get a feel for what it is they are gonna say or do, to help figure out what I should be doing when I do finally work out with the video... (you don't suppose that 1960's "Twister" game was someone's twisted idea of how Yoga was done, like maybe a sarcastic observation that just turned into a wildly popular game??)... My "fantasy" gym should have TV's and Mirrors somehow across from each other and up on the ceiling, big print too, so no matter which way I am looking, I won't miss the captions, even without glasses. Oh well.

LOL - I'm looking away from the screen (maybe somebody ELSE is flexible enough to get in those positions and still see the screen, but not me). I've liked Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown and Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior (I think that's the title), but I've tried others, too.

(I'm a male in the Army - the one thing I DON'T have a problem with is hair in my eyes.)

You can't see the screen because why? Is it because the caption are too large and covers up? Or because you are upside down in a downward dog or similar and your hair gets in your face? ;) or the family per comes over and lays at your face??

Which yoga dvd is this? Thanks!!

PAH!!!

Remember me muttering elsewhere about all the settings and switches and TV and DVD and all, trying to get the "Tai Chi for Beginners" DVD to perform the captions that were allegedly on it (produced by Element, taught by Samuel Barnes)???

Today I installed a different free-ware Video DVD software that was recommended to me by a woman I met last month who is late deafened, and she teaches ASL at a private school for the deaf, as well as tutoring for pay. She captures YouTube videos of various topics having to do with and performed in ASL, and saves them to her hard drive. She said she has had cases where YouTube videos she'd seen were then removed and so she started her own collection.

I got it installed and it's a bit rough around the edges, but I was able to right click during play and find the "Subtitle" settings, and then click on "Caption 1" and I got all the CAPTIONS!!

YEA!!

Ahhh I was hoping I had a screen shot of the captions but evidently I didn't do it right! They were nice big sub-title style captions, white letters over the video, not the "old school" style of captioning with the black block over video with white letters inside.

Anyway, I need to get some sleep now, but I'll get the links for this software - its put together with volunteers and is open source and no malware or anything in it. I had a bit of stuttering in the sound quality but that's likely my poor old computer filling up the cache buffers....

oh here it is:
official website
www.videolan.org/vlc/

For those who like to download from reputable computer expert websites, where it is scanned and verified, here's another link to download the same program:
download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3
00
0-13632_4-10267151.html

Ahhhhh
And this video was much more interesting reading the captions, so I'm wanting to get to sleep so I can watch it again while my son is off to school, where I can have more space...

Curious to see if I can get the other Elements DVD to perform the subtitles as well.

And this is an example of the kind of ignorance - well-meaning but accidentally confusing, I suspect - goes on when people say that their DVD is "captioned" when in reality, it has a subtitle track. The two systems are encoded differently, and subtitling has less information so far as other environmental sounds (like this one, doesn't say anything about the music in the background, the ocean you can see beyond where the man is performing his Tai Chi exercises, etc the way it would be in captioning.

But I am still Thankful, alright??

And Yes, Mary - we'll have to watch it a few times with captions on so we'll know what we're "supposed to do" later on, when we have our eyes closed!! hahaah! (plus, some of us, closing our eyes can mean balance issues and the world going tilt - but I know my balance seems to do better if I keep trying to do these various exercises - like rebounding etc.).

good night, ya'll!

For those who have seen the SparkPeople Team - T-Tapp or read the book T-Tapp system of exercise, most of her DVD's are not captioned. She does have one DVD where she has had it both captioned and has someone displaying ASL. I've not ordered it yet (I have the book and it came with a free DVD but it's like a brief introduction and there is no captioning. And her voice is a bit too high pitched and too "bright"/"perky" not easy to lipread. But I'll share the link here and on the T -Tapp Spark Team as well.

(edit added) oops this is the really expensive option, almost the entire store!! Very expensive.

So I went back to find the others, and here is the search results:

It's basically same DVD, but with various options in terms of how many other products you want added in the bundle - like with or without the brush, etc.

Sorry for the heart attack!!

Seems like there is some interest in captioned exercise videos from WHEREVER we can find them!! Since SparkPeople hasn't captioned any of Coach Nicole's videos, guess we can play hardball....

I just had an interesting online chat with the service rep for BeachBody company - and they make quite a few exercise programs (Turbo Jam, Insanity, Yoga, etc). I went to a lot of trouble to copy the chat discussion to make my own transcript, when I discovered that they sent the entire transcript to my email (along with the fake name for myself, which is fine!!). Here is part of it (snipped out the redundant and just general chitchat!!):

[08:44:10 PM] Danny Morrison: Hello, how may I help you ?
[08:44:56 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: so anyway, rumor has it that all the beachbody dvd's are open captioned/subtitled or closed captioned for deaf/hard of hearing? can you confirm or deny? thx
[08:45:41 PM] Danny Morrison: Please be informed that all our DVD's are captioned.
[08:45:47 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: I am the leader of the Deaf/HH team on www.sparkpeople.com and have been seeing some queries about finding quality exercise dvd's that are actually accessible .
[08:46:27 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Do you know if the captions will work on both the older analog TVs as well as the digital TV's (there is a difference in how the menu's have to be set up... )
[08:47:25 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: any info on that?
[08:47:49 PM] Danny Morrison: Please give me 2 minutes, while I look into it
[08:47:57 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Thanks!!
[08:49:08 PM] Danny Morrison: Be sure you have the player set to DVD, there may be a switch on your remote that needs to be set on DVD as well. If you have it set to VCR, you may still be able to see the main menu, but pushing play will not start the DVD (it would start a VHS if you have one in the machine)
[08:50:53 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: No I mean on some tv's, it will ask if you want caption by analog (since the 1990's when caption chip required installed on all TV's 19" or above), or with a newer tv, digital, it will offer choice between analog, or digital service. But, you have a point there, some times the captioning is encoded on the dvd as a sub-title rather than as a closed captioning.
[08:52:28 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: I own dvd's that were encoded both ways - where the encoding was only visible if the tv/monitor was set to caption ON, as well as dvd's where it didn't matter how the tv was set, the dvd player itself would uncover the captioning (which is technically a type of "subtitle" and don't ask me exactly what the difference is.... it would just keep us both up all night long!!!
[08:52:29 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: haha
[08:52:59 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: you can't play a DVD on a VCR - two incompatible formats.... ;-P
[08:53:33 PM] Danny Morrison: I am sorry to inform you that, we had not come up with this issue so far, our customers seem to work fine with our DVD's
[08:57:29 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Right, but earlier you were discussing VCR... and so oh well, some of us took the VCR's out of the loop years ago and no longer play VCR. But if the caption was encoded such to require the TV caption settings to be on, then it would reveal the dvd that allowed captioning revealed by tv, as well as vcr - VCR was either encoded (closed captioned) or revealed (subtitled).
[08:58:09 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: okay well I think this basically answers my question. And are there other vendors for BeachBody products, like in a retail store, or like through Amazon.com or other online vendors?
[08:59:21 PM] Danny Morrison: Amazon.com is affiliated to Beachbody
[09:00:16 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: BeachBody includes Yoga, Insanity and what else??
[09:01:47 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: well maybe these are resellers like using Amazon the way one could use eBay?
[09:02:10 PM] Danny Morrison: We have many programs, you can view via online at http://www.beachbody.com/category/fitness_
programs/best_sellers.do

So anyway, I was more impressed with the company and may consider saving up to buy a set later as a goal. Pretty sure I'm too weak to do much of it now!). And I did find some of the BeachBody titles on Amazon (which would help with costs.).

I have some other vendors to share too, but need to go to bed (the above times are evidently Pacific time zone? because it is after 11 pm CST). I think I'll make this a sticky note so it stays at the top and everyone who has hearing loss can benefit from the info - whether they chose to sign or voice for themselves, whether they use CI or HA or nothing, whatever whatever - the captions help everyone!!!

Or if you think of one that you've researched, feel free to share.

I have a bunch of DVD's that I thought that were not working, that I thought labeled as captioned but I could never see them (like the Crunch Dance Fitness I reported on earlier this week), and with this new information from Danny, I will try to play these others again and maybe get the caption to work. Then as I find them to be captioned I'll share the names of those DVD's.

In general I'd say there are WAAY more captioned exercise videos the past 5 years than ever was since 1990 or even back in 1985 or whenever it was when I got my first Collage Video catalog (and evidently it was their first catalog too - they'd bought my name off some list, I found out later.). But back then there were not many videos that were captioned. I had one VHS tape by Karen Voight that was captioned Yoga.

Time to put the excuses away and get on with life.

Julia
