Seems like there is some interest in captioned exercise videos from WHEREVER we can find them!! Since SparkPeople hasn't captioned any of Coach Nicole's videos, guess we can play hardball....
I just had an interesting online chat with the service rep for BeachBody company - and they make quite a few exercise programs (Turbo Jam, Insanity, Yoga, etc). I went to a lot of trouble to copy the chat discussion to make my own transcript, when I discovered that they sent the entire transcript to my email (along with the fake name for myself, which is fine!!). Here is part of it (snipped out the redundant and just general chitchat!!):
[08:44:10 PM] Danny Morrison: Hello, how may I help you ?
[08:44:56 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: so anyway, rumor has it that all the beachbody dvd's are open captioned/subtitled or closed captioned for deaf/hard of hearing? can you confirm or deny? thx
[08:45:41 PM] Danny Morrison: Please be informed that all our DVD's are captioned.
[08:45:47 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: I am the leader of the Deaf/HH team on www.sparkpeople.com and have been seeing some queries about finding quality exercise dvd's that are actually accessible .
[08:46:27 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Do you know if the captions will work on both the older analog TVs as well as the digital TV's (there is a difference in how the menu's have to be set up... )
[08:47:25 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: any info on that?
[08:47:49 PM] Danny Morrison: Please give me 2 minutes, while I look into it
[08:47:57 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Thanks!!
[08:49:08 PM] Danny Morrison: Be sure you have the player set to DVD, there may be a switch on your remote that needs to be set on DVD as well. If you have it set to VCR, you may still be able to see the main menu, but pushing play will not start the DVD (it would start a VHS if you have one in the machine)
[08:50:53 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: No I mean on some tv's, it will ask if you want caption by analog (since the 1990's when caption chip required installed on all TV's 19" or above), or with a newer tv, digital, it will offer choice between analog, or digital service. But, you have a point there, some times the captioning is encoded on the dvd as a sub-title rather than as a closed captioning.
[08:52:28 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: I own dvd's that were encoded both ways - where the encoding was only visible if the tv/monitor was set to caption ON, as well as dvd's where it didn't matter how the tv was set, the dvd player itself would uncover the captioning (which is technically a type of "subtitle" and don't ask me exactly what the difference is.... it would just keep us both up all night long!!!
[08:52:29 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: haha
[08:52:59 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: you can't play a DVD on a VCR - two incompatible formats.... ;-P
[08:53:33 PM] Danny Morrison: I am sorry to inform you that, we had not come up with this issue so far, our customers seem to work fine with our DVD's
[08:57:29 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: Right, but earlier you were discussing VCR... and so oh well, some of us took the VCR's out of the loop years ago and no longer play VCR. But if the caption was encoded such to require the TV caption settings to be on, then it would reveal the dvd that allowed captioning revealed by tv, as well as vcr - VCR was either encoded (closed captioned) or revealed (subtitled).
[08:58:09 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: okay well I think this basically answers my question. And are there other vendors for BeachBody products, like in a retail store, or like through Amazon.com or other online vendors?
[08:59:21 PM] Danny Morrison: Amazon.com is affiliated to Beachbody
[09:00:16 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: BeachBody includes Yoga, Insanity and what else??
[09:01:47 PM] Mrs. msdrpepper: well maybe these are resellers like using Amazon the way one could use eBay?
[09:02:10 PM] Danny Morrison: We have many programs, you can view via online at http://www.beachbody.com/category/fitness_programs/best_sellers.do
So anyway, I was more impressed with the company and may consider saving up to buy a set later as a goal. Pretty sure I'm too weak to do much of it now!). And I did find some of the BeachBody titles on Amazon (which would help with costs.).
I have some other vendors to share too, but need to go to bed (the above times are evidently Pacific time zone? because it is after 11 pm CST). I think I'll make this a sticky note so it stays at the top and everyone who has hearing loss can benefit from the info - whether they chose to sign or voice for themselves, whether they use CI or HA or nothing, whatever whatever - the captions help everyone!!!
Or if you think of one that you've researched, feel free to share.
I have a bunch of DVD's that I thought that were not working, that I thought labeled as captioned but I could never see them (like the Crunch Dance Fitness I reported on earlier this week), and with this new information from Danny, I will try to play these others again and maybe get the caption to work. Then as I find them to be captioned I'll share the names of those DVD's.
In general I'd say there are WAAY more captioned exercise videos the past 5 years than ever was since 1990 or even back in 1985 or whenever it was when I got my first Collage Video catalog (and evidently it was their first catalog too - they'd bought my name off some list, I found out later.). But back then there were not many videos that were captioned. I had one VHS tape by Karen Voight that was captioned Yoga.
Time to put the excuses away and get on with life.
