This has been a bad week for me. I started my journey in September and so far lost 12 pounds. However for some reason this week i have fallen all the way off. I have went back to my old eating habits and everything. My co-worker got mad at me today because he said that I was doing so good and everything that i worked for is gonna be for nothing. Those words stuck with me. I need help to get back on track.

Hey KEITOCHAN,

I keep an actual food journal to help me that I carry everywhere because I'm not around a computer all the time. I started at Day One and I right down everything including goals and cravings just so I can see where I'm at. On the back of each days page I also will write down anything I'm thinking and any excercise I do. You could give that a try? Hope this helps! =]

Yeah I agree with GRAFFYGIRL, there's plenty of ways to ignore the cake. I have several weddings this wedding season and it was really hard to resist the cakes on some of the weddings because I know what it was made of or how unique it was. Anyways, most of the time the cake was at the cake table and I just avoided it and danced my big booty off on the dance floor! And trust me even if you ate a bite of that cake to satisfy yourself (do not eat it because someone else said you should) then you can always burn it off.

Any who, I've finally got myself to start using the Nutrition Tracker for the whole day! Because I always forget to add something or the amount of water I drank. How has everyone here helped yourself keep tracking to make it up to a streak? I'm still struggling at that point.

Help please!

It is usually pretty easy to get away with no cake. There is usually dancing going on right after cutting the cake, so you could get moving on the dance floor (calorie burner emoticon ) . Or if they come around to the all of the tables, just excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. But if all else fails just say no thank you. You don't owe anyone an explanation! And if someone does ask you why you aren't having cake (none of their business), tell them that you are still full from dinner. You'll do great! emoticon

'Cause sometimes you just feel tired,
Feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
And just pull that out of you and get that motivation to not give up
And not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse-Eminem

Officially finish my first week of eating healthy and exercising tomorrow. I weigh myself first thing in the morning and I'm hoping for a loss.

Ooh, while I'm here.. I have my best friends wedding on Saturday and I don't think I want to have any wedding cake, is there a super polite and (quiet) way to refuse having cake without having people knowing that I'm on a healthy eating plan? I'm not sure I want to tell everyone that I'm doing this.. "diet" until I have to.

Hope you're all going well. :)

I just want to say that the best thing that's happened to me in the last two years is I got invited to be part of a book club, which I love. Currently, we are a group of eight, with differing viewpoints on many topics, but we get along so well and learn from each other (and boy do we laugh a lot!), I'm so grateful to have made this wonderful group a part of my life.

Congratulations Amber!!! That's awesome! I'm hoping that I'll be able to run one next year.. here's to training and hoping no further injuries happen!

It's been fairly busy for me lately. Trying to get stuff finished before I'm done work. I don't know why I'm bothering since I'm getting laid off but I just can't leave everything messy. I've been getting a lot of exercise in but I'm still trying to figure out the diet side of things. I've had adjustments made and it's been difficult staying within those limits.

I just wish that I wasn't here right now and that I would be able to do things that I just can't do right now.

my fitness and healthy lifestyle journey keeps me on my toes.. This morning I got up at 6 am so I could drive a half hour to go cheer some friends running a half marathon. I've been given permission to start my running program but I have to be honest.. I really only half heartedly done the program. I've been skipping days.. I'm not going to be able to run a 5K next year if I don't get my ass in gear. So Mark (my DB coach and a great friend) suggested that I go cheer him and Chad on. He said that I might get inspired and may seriously start my running.

Well, he was right.. it was amazing.. you could cut the excitement with a knife. Even watching people finish their runs.. looking exhausted and spent but happy. It was amazing. One girl went back down the hill (the 10K and 1/2 had a uphill leg right at the end!) to run with another who was having problems finishing. Being there.. watching people.. I so want to be part of this community. I want it so bad, I can taste it.

Now, how would I track that in my nutritional tracker?

I get the math.. but at the same time I don't.. It's confusing to me.. I like it when my dietitian tells me.. eat this amount of calories...

From time to time, I go to the BMR calculator and figure out what it is, then subtract what I eat and add what I burn. If you have a deficit of 1000 calories a day, you should lose 2 lbs. a week. It takes some time and some advance planning, but it seems to work.

I've been stalled for a while now and with the exercises that I have been doing, I should have been dropping pounds like mad. I brought up to my dietitian and she's the one that decided to see if that was the case. I'm glad she upped them and we (me) are trying it for a month to see if it's going to help. I feel like I'm always eating now though.. It's been hard to eat all those calories but I'm working on it.

I am a big believer in following your BMR needs when actively losing weight. I see a lot of people say that SP puts their calorie needs too high, but I agree with your dietitian that they are often too low.

If you look at the REPORTS button under "MY TRACKER", there is a report called "Daily Calorie Differential". That shows what they are calculating as your BMR. In the definition below, it says that they base your BMR on a sedentary lifestyle. Well, if you're working out several days a week, you're no longer sedentary. You may be 'light', 'moderate', 'high' or 'very high' - which puts your body's daily needs much higher.

If you go to www.bmrcalculator.org, you can punch in your own numbers. At the bottom of the page, there is a link for a more general weight loss calculator that takes your current activity level into account. For me, it puts my calories much higher than they are on SP (at my current weight of 337, moderate activity, height 5'9" and age forty, it suggests 3000-3500 calories a day to still lose 1-2 lbs a week.) My doctor and I are comfortable with my Spark range of 2000ish-2300ish since my PCOS makes it extra hard to lose weight, but if I go over that once in a while, I don't worry too much.

Seriously, this approach as changed my life when it comes to eating more healthfully. I've been able to detach emotionally from food - no more "I was bad today" thoughts or beating myself up. At this range, I feel satisfied all day long - no hunger pangs, no foods to avoid except common sense ones.

Everyone has to do what works for them. This just happens to be what works for me!

Our guests are finally gone and things are slowly getting back to normal. It's amazing how much having extra people in your house can disrupt things.

On the diet front, I went to the dietitian yesterday and told her my problem with this bloody plateau I'm on and how I'm not sure what the heck is going on. Well, she checked my BMR or BER (basal metabolic rate or something like that) and it seems that SP has my calorie range to low.. with the amount of exercise I'm doing, calories I'm burning, it seems that at the end of the day I'm only "surviving" on 900 calories. She believes that I'm in starvation mode. (I've been thinking along those lines and asked her about it. That's when she did the BER/BMR thingie..) so she has upped my calories for a month to see if it's going to make a difference. I hope so.. this is getting really frustrating!

Oof - three weeks is a long time to stay with anyone. I had a friend who would just stay with me and my old roomies on weekends while she auditioned - and that was rough! Only 3 more days!!!

I'm sorry I haven't been on much lately.. still logging in though. We have some guests visiting us from the US.. and they are driving me nuts! I can't wait for them to go home!! Isn't that a horrible thing to say? Don't get me wrong, I love them dearly and was happy to see them but enough already. These are friends of my parents. They are here for 3 weeks and are leaving on Monday (YAY!) When they show up.. everything here gets disrupted.. everything. They have to have things their way.. since they have been here, my eating has been very difficult to keep in line (and I was doing so well), I can't do any work without having someone lurking over my shoulder. Heck I can't even go potty without having to dodge people. I'm just so tired.. I want my nice quiet life back...

Sorry for the rant..

Joyce

AMY - I want to love the elliptical, but I have yet to find one where the stride is long enough for me. I feel like I'm a little kid dragging my feet across a linoleum floor when I'm on one and it KILLS my knees. I'm looking forward to getting on a treadmill and working my way up to running.

Hey, has anyone seen the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead"? I streamed it on Netflix the other day. It's about a guy from Australia who comes to the States to do a 60-day juice fast. I'm not an advocate of fasting, but I am interested in the health benefits of fresh juice and will someday own a good juicer.

I've got a gym membership, but I don't use it much. We haven't taken the kids swimming even once this summer. Every time we go, the pool's so crowded, there's just no point. And inside the gym, they don't have very good A/C, and its miserable to work out in there. During the winter, its great though.

Hopefully, I won't need to go to the gym much this winter. I get my new elliptical next month!!!

CYPRIANARTEMIS - I cannot wait to join a gym. It was the promise I made to myself, my husband and my SIL that as soon as I was working again I was joining a gym! I want to ride bicycles and walk on treadmills and use the pool and strength training machines!

i too no longer crave foods that i used to love. fast food no longer appeals to me! its a great day to think that when i eat right i have no interest in ruining all the hard work that i put into it.

It comes down to a simple question: what do you want out of life, and what are you willing to do to get it?

for every lb lost. i reward myself with an itunes download.

@shrink_cycling - never heard of a Buddha plate....think I'm going to look for that and get some! :) Thanks for the suggestion!

I still love Chinese food - I just don't get General Tso's Chicken or all the deep-fried appetizers anymore. Bring me a Buddha plate (all veggies) or some bok-choy or chicken and string beans and I'm a happy camper. Many Chinese (or other Asian style) restaurants are good about preparing steamed dishes with sauce on the side if you request it.

BLEGNER1 - Good on you for maintaining - and I'm glad to see you're still here while you're going through stressful times!

I have been flucuating in a three lb weight yoyo since March. There is a lot going on stress wise in my life and I feel like I am doing real well to stay in this three lb limit instead of gaining. I have found that a lot of the things I really ate a lot of before, I no longer have a taste for. So I feel that even though I am at a stand still, I am still a winner because through this major traumatic event I am maintaining very easily

The Lord is my tower and my strength!

That's right, Chinese food is all grease and salt. I had my day when I was so into chinese food and look where it got me............never been skinny.

Now,a little bit of meat in a stir fry does it for me and I do like to go out for sushi; not the raw meat stuff...............and it's not full of grease.

I like shrimp stir fry but the jury is still out if it is the good chlorestal or the bad stuff.

Awesome! I know what you mean about the chinese food. My husband really wants it, but knowing how horrible it is for me, I just can't do it. Do I want to waste an entire day's calories (not to mention the TONS of sodium) on one meal? I don't think so! He can have his sesame chicken, I'll stick with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a couple snacks! loll

I am gaining knowledge. Remember that old "Schoolhouse Rock" show? Knowledge is Power! That is so true. Discovering that my favorite Chinese food (sweet & sour chicken) was worth a whole day's calories completely soured me on it. I don't even want it any more. I've discovered that, due to my lean body mass amount, I may not really have to lose as much weight as I thought--hope sprang forth! I really felt that my goal weight set by SparkPeople was not attainable. We'll see how it goes. I am learning that a lot of the foods I already eat and like are the ones I should be eating! All of these positive discoveries are helping me make new lifestyle choices and combat the negative voice in my head that says I am doomed to failure. Yay!

Joyce - I recently went through a 2 week period where the scale didn't budge one iota. Then I hurt myself and decided to take off from exercise for 4 days - still eating at the bottom of my calorie range. The next weigh in day I lost 4 lbs - and I'm on track to lose another 2 this week when I'm working out less than I was so I can fully heal! I think the body sometimes just does what it wants to when it wants to. Hang in there! You have been rocking this so far!

I'm trying to start a streak with my fruits and veggies...hopefully soon I can start on water...I can't get pass drinking 4 8oz. But I bought a fancy new water jug that has a frozen pipe thingy in the middle to keep it cold and it's 54oz so hopefully I can get that down throughout each day.

Scream! Get it out of your system, go to your weight/calories burned page and do some tweaking. Maybe you aren't eating enough for the calories you're burning.

I'm glad you're not giving up. At least these two stubborn pounds aren't 10 stubborn pounds, right? :D

I'm so discouraged.. I weighed myself and I gained 2 lbs. It's the 2 lbs I lost last week. I keep losing and gaining the same few pounds. I exercised all week and ate within my calorie range but I still gained.. it's really frustrating. I don't know what I'm going to do .. I want to give up to be honest.. what's the point of continuing if I just keep gaining and losing the same weight over and over and over again?

Joyce

Hey everyone. So far, I'm on track with my goals. I'll know for sure if I hit the next goal tomorrow morning when I weigh in. If I'm down 2 pounds this week, it'll make a total of 60 lost. I need to be to 246 by the 22nd for my BLC. Fingers crossed! lol

I miss camping so much! We were supposed to go last month, but plans fell through.

Right now, I'm trying to get my house extra clean and in order so when I leave next week it will be clean when I come back. And spending lots of time reassuring my son that leaving his friends for a week is not the end of his social life.

Once upon a time, I was an avid camper. It is one of the most wholesome things you can do for yourself.

As per my usual, I am not being wholly committed to the process so, I see my weight go down a sum then up a sum.

Not a happy camper!

The camping trip was awesome.. thanks for the info about the S'mores but I just had the toasted marshmallows. And they are tracked! I've been having a pretty busy week this week. I'm sort of looking forward to the weekend and letting myself unwind.. wait! I can't, I have another wedding on Friday and I'm supposed to go kayaking on Saturday. I was sitting here wondering why I'm so exhausted.. I'm making sure that I'm packing up as much as I can into this summer.. I just wish my friend would be here to share it with me.

I'm having that issue too. Now that I can fit in something smaller, it seems those are the ones that sell out first on the clearance rack. :P I'm not complaining though! I'd rather have a couple things in a smaller size than a closet full of bigger sizes. :P

Its been miserable hot here in Va Beach too!

I have had limited internet this past week. Its been a pain in the behind. Something is wrong with my computer, but its not a virus. It connects to the internet only intermittenly. Very strange! I guess, I am going to have to have it looked at. In the mean time, I have my laptop, which is slow as a teenager cleaning their room (trust me, in my house thats really really really slow)

Between my connectivity and being sick, I haven't been around too much. I have missed you all! Hope I can get this thing fixed soon.

Amy, if I was ever glad that I moved to the PNW after living my entire life in the Northeast, it's this summer! I don't mind hot summer days if it cools down at night, but living in NYC - it NEVER cooled down during the summer. The first time I lived there, we were too broke for AC, so I bought a bunch of 99 cent ice packs and kept them in my freezer. Every night, I pulled my sheet over me and tucked the ice packs along both sides of my body. It was the only way I could sleep!

SKYRUNHER - Two s'mores made with 1 Hershey's Kiss each, two marshmallows each and two rectangles of graham cracker = 254 calories. If you're not a marshmallow junkie like me, you can use just one for each s'more.

For me, this feels like a decadent dessert without going too crazy.

We finally have a cooler day. Okay a day thats not 95 and above.. instead its only going to be like 91 out today! Hopefully I can find the motivation to take my dogs for their walk. Since its been so hot lately we havent been able to leave the air condition.

It comes down to a simple question: what do you want out of life, and what are you willing to do to get it?

It's miserably hot here.

that's fantastic Linda!! This weekend I'm going camping with my sister and her family. I'm sort of excited as I haven't been camping in two years. I'm going to have to plan my meals carefully so that I may be able to have a couple of s'mores...

** Change is like walking an uphill, rocky road: you will stumble, you will fall. You may even roll downhill a bit. You will be tempted to stay down. You'll ask yourself "why bother"? But, if you pick yourself up and just keep pushing forward, eventually you'll get to the top and have a beautiful view! **

Update on the job front: The interview went well this morning. It starts as a per diem position but there is room for rapid growth (we're talking in less than a month maybe getting a FT gig).

30 minutes after I got out of the interview, I got called for a phone interview. It's only PT, but it's permanent, union with benefits. It's a set schedule, so I could easily get another PT gig and still have time for school.

For the first time in 3 months, I had a productive hump day! JOY!!!
