Well, i think I'm right about this, but not sure, the reason we do not see parti colored poodles in the United States is they are not AKC breed acceptable, or they were not the last time I knew. Here poodles are shown in all colors, parti colors usually being grey and white and black and white.

I think thats stupid, but I don't breed, so I am not sure. Temperment and correct body structure (Aka no hip problems, bite problems etc) is more important than color.

Sam we don't have papers for, since he came from the shelter, but he is ALL poodle... Our groomer just adores him...

And so so we!

It's happened to me too. That's why I call them tzu's. Which some fanciers also call them:)

I'm glad Zoey's tail isn't docked. Both Sugar and Strudel's tails were docked. I love the way Zoey's tail curls. It reminds me of a Peke's tail.

Maggie is an apricot/red and we are only about an hour from Philly. In fact her breeder was not far from there. Her Daddy was a beautiful deep red and her mama a soft apricot. I was so taken by Andy's coloring because I had never seen a red before. Maggie's coloring is interesting b/c her ears tail, and middle back really show the reds (not like when she was a puppy though). When she first gets groomed, she is very champaigne looking but by the time 5 weeks hits - the red is showing through again. I think she is just the prettiest thing. She is a toy by the way. Her parents were both minis but she has some throw back toy from mom's side. She is just 10 inches at the shoulder so she is at the top range of toy,

This is not a heavily populated poodle area so I get excited when I see them. Obviously Lancaster County has a bad rep for being puppy mill territory so we have lots of 'designer dogs' around here with Shi-Poos being very popular. We have very few black poodles here and even fewer parti color black & wihites. We also have a ton of Yorkies and labs. Lancaster and Columbia have a lot of pits.

Although I met Maggie when she was 5 weeks old, they had already docked her tail. If I would have been able to meet her earlier, I would have asked it NOT to be docked. We were not planning to buy a dog that day but Maggie had other ideas!!!! LOL Thank goodness too. I will say her tail is not as short as most poodles so that is good. Our poor chocolate poodle, Shilo, (who has crossed) had the nubbiest little tail. She was beautiful though. Our silver Shi-Poo, Ginny (also gone now) had the wonderful Shi-Tzu tail that was beautiful. It curved ever so slightly toward her back giving her an impish look especially with her unique Shi-Tzu jaw and poodle snout! She was mischievious and smart as a whip. All of these poodle girls were/are bright respectively!

Huh - tried to post and asked me not to use profanity. ?????? Maybe b/c I did not have the hyphen in Shi-tzu??? weird.

Bright Blessings
Sue

My Cindy looks like Kellyannallens poodle. They call it Red or sable brown/apricot. She looks like a lion to me.

He,he, Mary. Your friends in Jacksonville and Louisville might disagree about not being Southern. But I agree that Albuquerque and Tucson might be considered Western (with SLC).

And of course April is darned smart (as is Sam in Baden-Baden).

I agree too with KellyAnn and the Germans and Nordic countries which forbid docking poodle tails, contrary to the usual practice here for poodles (though Bichons and Tzus generally aren't docked). I didn't get the tails of Cleo's pups docked, and IMHO they are/were mighty fine.

Jane.

that is so interesting! I notice they didn't include any southern states in the Poodle loving category, but they abound here as well.

There have been two studies done, uh at our expense since we are the tax payers, to find the top smartest breeds. The first study concluded that the smartest was the Golden Retriever (I had one and they are very smart) and the second place winner was the Poodle.

In the second study (I guess they didn't spend enough on the first one) The Border Collie came in first, and yes, they are extremely smart, and then the Poodle came in second again.

I didn't know about all that when I got little April. She weighed about a pound when I got her maybe a little more. I'm sure her bladder wasn't any bigger than a pea. Within a week I had her potty trained, to the point that she would go a sit at the door and look at me until I noticed! Within a month of bringing her home, even as small as she was, she was sleeping all night and holding her water.

While April isn't your usual trick pup, she does know all her commands such as sit, stay, stop, etc. What's more, she knows so many words that I started spelling them in conversations. Now she knows how to spell too LOL! When I am speaking to someone, she watches me intently to see if it's anything to do with her or chicken or anything that would concern her!

I will never be without a Poodle in my life. I have come to love her so much, my kids are jealous. Too bad! She is my constant companion, she doesn't judge or keep score and she never asks for money! Hah!

I can tell you another poodle place! Baden-Baden germany! (I'm from the Philadelphia area originally where poodles are VERY popular) But here in Baden_Baden, the Poodle is a king! Konigspudel (King Poodle or the Standards) are seen in White, Brown and Chocolate, the medium Poodles come in a rage of colors including two-colored but the predominant color for Minis and Toys is RED APRICOT! The one color, at least in the Philly area that is hard to find is one of the most common here. Sam, my poodle is a oversized medium poodle, with a non docked tail (In Germany if the poodles tail has been docked it probably came from France, docking is not allowed), red apricot that is a rescue from the Tierheim, or the local shelter.

He's just great! I can get numbers, because our groomer is the head of the local poodle club here. But here, you can see the international appeal of our favorite dogs!

In starting my spring cleaning (or still chugging alone from my New Year's cleaning), I noticed this article about Top Dog Breeds by city in 2009 (OK, the AKC really published it in 2010, really!). www.petplace.com/dogs/top-dog-breeds

Poodles are among the five most popular breeds in Washington DC metro area, where I now live with the lovely Tara, and in a few other cities. Tara notes that shih tzu's (her probable other half?) are tied for No. 5 in the WDC area but poodles are No. 4 in the area and poodles and tzus are 9 and 10 nationwide. Other especially poodle-loving cities, in reverse alphabetical order, are: Tucson, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Providence, Louisville, Jacksonville, Detroit, Buffalo, Baltimore and Albuquerque. Tara especially appreciated the writer's analysis of the rise of poodles and rottweilers in Charm City as "hard-working breeds with jobs." Yes! poodles and doodles are hard-workers, as well as smart, lovely, charming and with their own sense of humor (which I dare say I haven't noticed in the rotties we've met, however well-behaved!).

Any thoughts, poodlelovers? Of course, these stats came from official AKC registrations, and Tara and other doodlepups cannot be registered with the AKC. Also, it doesn't break down popularity within the metro area. We've noticed that in South Philadelphia, people have lots of poodles and chihuahuas and french bulldogs, among other breeds, but somehow we haven't met a Yorkie there, though Snickers the Yorkie lives next door in Arlington VA. Yorkies are supposed to be extremely popular in the Philly,NYC and Long Island metro areas, among others, as well as No. 3 among breeds nationwide.

Tara also told me to post a link to another article, about designer dogs like her (the shelter's characterization of the puppy mill she came from; as well as often met on walks). She noticed that among the designer breeds, only the Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix isn't a doodlepup! And we haven't met any of them either. www.petplace.com/dogs/most-common-br

By the way, the article was wrong about Joe Biden being a German Shepherd lover (though he would be allowed of course) -- he has a labradoodle called Brother. We wonder if Brother plays with Beau (Bo?) the first dog?
