Ooh, Delapis, you mentioned my microwave favorite. I just bought a couple ears of corn. I don't shuck corn before microwaving (4-5 min/ear). The corn leaves keep the steam in and might contribute a little flavor too. Some grocery stores' practice of shucking all the display corn, especially outside these late summer months, is a pet peeve of mine, for I like to see how fresh the corn is, etc. And the silk comes off fine when I open the cooked ear and use the pulled-back leaves as a handle. Of course, Tara pays attention to the cob, not the leaves....
Well, I admit that I have been reading about this too. Some articles that I have read poo poo the nay sayers and vice versa. I do know that I learned a long time ago about any type of Styrofoam in the microwave but I used to see people do it all the time. It is a very well known fact that a lot of carcinogens come out of that. And also the saran wrap and things like that. I do my veggies in a couple of table spoons of water in a glass bowl that has a lid too. But I have been a little worried myself.
Also, I just read that EVERYONE has cancer cells in their bodies. It just depends if they spread. cancer cells thrive on sugar and high fructose corn syrup. sheesh. I think we might only be safe if we go back to living like our grand parents did on the farm growing our own and killing our own meats.

I'm guilty of using it for my Lean Cuisines and Smart Ones. I also use it to cook corn on the cob, as I think it tastes much better than placing the corn in water and boiling it. I just shuck the corn and wet it. Then I either wrap it in waxed paper or place it on a plate and cover it with a drizzle of water and waxed paper. It stays crunchy. (2 minutes per ear)

I use them, but recognize there's a tradeoff. I have to continually remind myself not to nuke food in plastic containers. I thought tea tasted different from the microwave because the water got warm but didn't boil, which is so necessary for a good cuppa. I think microwaves preserve more vitamins in veggies than boiling, especially. And I appreciate having a microwave around when I want to remove chicken especially from the BBQ because it's getting charred by flames fed by dripping fat, but without the center being cooked enough. My last microwave plus might be a minus--my own leftovers don't have all the chemical preservatives of TV dinners and canned convenience foods. But having a microwave also means that I might keep them too long in the fridge for optimal health.
Hi Mary, I think all your rationalizations about why to cut out microwave use are good. However:
I don't think I could live without my microwave. I depend upon my Amy's frozen dinners and other good quality frozen foods when I have only 30 minutes to eat lunch on a busy day. Much healthier than running through a drive-through fast food place!
I also have noticed the difference between drinking tea brewed in microwaved water as opposed to boiled on the stove. However, I think it is because when I use the microwave, I sometimes am not watching to stop the boil as soon as it occurs. Over-boiling the water anywhere will make it taste flat.
I have to admit, also that I still use plastic in my microwave -----I am aware that I should stop that! Just hard to break an old habit.
Hubby and I are talking about potential hazards of cooking with microwaves. I have cut way back on using it and I will not use plastic in the microwave. Recently he came across more info on it and he is thinking we should stop using it altogether.
He is concerned about studies that show they can modify foods enough that they can't be properly metabolized and then it creates issues related to diabetes and elevated cholesterol among other things. All the studies appear to be small and our government still says there is no problem.
But I wonder. When I nuke tea water (without tea in it)the tea does indeed does taste different than if I boil it. If that is the case that it can change the water's ability to brew tea what else is it changing?
Our younger son and his family have never owned one and won't use one. Interestingly, our older son stopped using them aver 5 years ago.
So I am curious how you all feel about microwave use.
As an aside, hubby said that would mean he'd have to get rid of his frozen meals - hooray - there would be a plus. In fact, that may be the real benefit of giving the microwave completely up - no more INSTANT highly processed foods. We'd have to make slower different (possibly healthier) choices wouldn't we? hmmmmmm
