Wow! This is quite a story.

Regarding pet safety in cars since there's some discussion below, please check out the organization BarkBuckleUp. They promote safety of animals in vehicles, including harnessing them in with a doggie seat.

I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of this org last week (and I may actually be doing some consulting for her). Do check them out....+ they have a pet safety kit you can order.

Peace, Love, and everything Groovy!

Alabama doesn't have such a law, as of yet. Ginger is too old to break now!
She is set in her ways, for sure!

Yeah we can get ticketed here for dogs in the driver's lap. Maggie has a raised car bed that straps into the back seat and then she is tethered to the seatbelt that holds it in.

Our other girls were never well behaved in the car so we trained Maggie pretty quickly. We found her car bed and she goes in there every time. She knows to jump up in it and get her 'seatbelt' on (a special harness).

She is safe and can look out and I don't have to worry about what she is doing. I can see her in the little mirror. She can sit up and look out or she can curl up and take a nap. She WOULD rather be in my lap but we make her use her car bed except on very rare occasions (like when she is sick).

I know some dogs who get in the car and lay quietly. None of mine would ever have done! I bet that was the case with this exec's dog though. Such a tragedy.

You know, that happens to human kids sometimes too. I think I read that happened last year where hubby thought wife had the child and turned out she had strapped her into HIS car while the baby was sleeping and the guy didn't know it. He went on it to work and left the child in the car b/c he didn't know she was there. The daycare called Mom to say she didn't arrive and then they found her in time.

Bright Blessings
Sue

Yup, it's big news in D.C., though not as big as Sen. Kennedy. I'm surprised she didn't know the dog was in the car, although when it's hot, Tara goes to the back seat right behind the console A/C vent, which is cooler than the house. With all the heat this last week, she's finally realized the house has its benefits, for it takes the car a while to cool down.

As for lap dogs, she crawled into mine a couple of blocks from the dog park a few months ago. Turns out the police were directing traffic that day. So, I got a warning that dog in lap will earn a reckless driving citation in any accident.

Hey Kathy, I'v always let Ginger lay in my lap while I drive! I wanted to get her a car seat one time and the Hubby said, it would be a waste of money!
She won't sit anywhere but in my lap.
I know where she is all the time, right under me!

I would definitely know if Scooter was in the car, because he would be in the front seat next to me if I was driving. Maybe not the safest place for him, but right now when we go in the car he sits on my lap so I know he would be there.

Yah,

That's my one reservation about her story,BooBoo will be 16 in two months, & I think I'd know it if BooBoo were in the care with me! Altho, in all fairness, I don't drive. But, I still think I'd know even if he were in the same room with me!

It is really sad indeed! That poor pup really suffered! Looks like she didn't know the dog was in the car. The husband should have told her!
I just can't see how these things happen!
But then, if Ginger was in my car, I would know it!

I agree with the rest of you. I am sure she didn't even know the poor dog was in the car.
How devastated she must be. We will all have to keep her in our prayers. I am sure she is feeling guilty and completely overwhelmed by this all. Poor woman. Poor little Louie.

At first glance, this is pretty straight forward, undeniable negligence. But,looking @ the mitigating circumstances, it's not so clear. But for this to happen to an S.P.C.A. worker, the C.E.O. no less, naturally, the media is going to blow it out of proportion.

Sounds like the hubby put the dog into the car and she may not have even known it. How tragic for all of them!
