I'm sorry that I could not get on my computer sooner. I would have tried to give my .2 cents worth of advice (& plenty of Love). But it looks to me like you got plenty of both. I know that you are glad that the festivities are over. & now you are free to getting back to being your bright, cheery self.

Hey Aquajane

Thanks for the encouragement. :-)

#1 son should be showing up within 2 hours or so. I won't have done everything I wanted done for the weekend but that is ok. Most every food thing I am making is easy. So things are going ok. I told one of my friends that if people get cranky I'll just go play with my grnaddaughter and let people fend for themselves. lol

I have never had salmon burgers. I do get Alaskan Salmon from Costco when they have it. I avoid Atlantic Salmon b/c of the heavy metals. I love the turkey burgers from Costco. And the Bocca's are good too. Hubby still prefers beef so I often make him his and me, mine. :-)

I like to get the soy crumbles as a substitute to ground beef in whole wheat pasta dishes or chili. Hubby can't tell the difference. I get Smart Sausage too and that seems to be a good substitute.

I haven't had the prowler for a while. One thing I did start doing that might be helping with that besides you wonderful friends encouraging me. I have been making lemonade with splenda when I get hungry around my normal menu. That seems to be curbing the appetite.

I stopped at McD's the other afternoon when I was running errands and picked up one of their Minute Maid lemonades (also made with Splenda) b/c what I REALLY wanted to do was stop at Brusters and get a waffle cone ice cream. It was a well spent dollar - the lemonade helped me bypass that. Yeah me. :-)

Hey, Starlasue. Just another reminder that we're rooting for you and your updoming BBQ/picnic and wishing you the best.

I don't have too much to say about the current prowling topic, since you do seem to be eating a protein along with the other snacks. Sometimes not having the protein will make the cravings worse, or having significant sugar or salt before/in the craving--will make one want either eating more of the food (usually fat-laden) with the sugar or salt, or more sugar to offset the salt or vice versa.

I specifically thought of you while I was standing in line at Aldi's and chattting with the next woman, who had a box of frozen salmon burgers. Aldi always has turkey as well as regular burgers, with salmon or boca burgers once in a while. I was at Costco yesterday and know they normally stock Boca burgers or the equivalent as well as ordinary burgers--the turkey, salmon or boca burgers are a healthier alternatives (but it was just a tire checkup trip so I didn't roam the store). BTW, the lady in line said her kids and husband loved the salmon burgers so she was back for more.

Well I have been hypnotized before as an example of how it is done. And one other time to find a repressed memory. So I know I am a candidate. People get scared of it b/c they think someone else is controlling them but actually an hypnotic suggestion that goes against your natural inclinations would not take.

Yes, I am considering it as a possibiliity.

I do so much appreciate those of you who have encouraged me and given me feedback. I haven't had a 'prowler' since I posted this. I think it is b/c I know all of you are rooting me on! Thanks

Yeah, I know I sound like I am whining. LOL I also know I am not the only person with the problem. And I know the OFF switch is the hand to mouth control that only I have. I think there is something wrong with my hand to mouth skills. I am waaaaay too proficient. LOL

I usually try a small handful - maybe 7-8 almonds and a BIG glass of water (will put Benefiber in it). Use positive self-talk. But, then I grab the carrots, maybe a 30 calorie ice pop, still prowling, so a few frozen grapes, maybe pop corn, ... Get the pic? All healthy snacks but all at once? Not so healthy. And oddly I am not even truly craving anything in particular!

So it isn't what I am eating, it is that I don't stop. It is like I am addict trying to get a food fix. I go until I finally feel 'full'. I am certain it is trying to fill an emotional need but I'd still like to shut it off. Wouldn't we all??~~!! :-)

Has anyone here tried hypnosis to try to set an OFF switch?

Well Sue...when you prowl and graze, just try to graze on carrots, celery, and other healthy veggies instead of those unhealthy and high calorie snackums. Will that work? I mean we all get those cravings don't we y'all? I just have to keep filling veggies on hand, otherwise I'm in the same boat as you are and I'll graze on chips and dips if I don't have veggies on hand. Or I'll overdo it on peanut butter and crackers which I adore!!!

Believe it or not, I am really good with portion sizing and measuring. And I also use the 'get the box early' thing when I go out to eat or order smaller portions.

My prob is when I get those 'I-gotta-eat-everything-that-is-not-tied-d
own' times. Those are my killers and those are what I have been battling of late. As I say I have made the healthy changes. I plan the proper amount of calories so I don't over/under eat.

In my usual day, I have a nice healthy hearty breakfast, a small snack mid-morning, a salad or veggie/fruit lunch with a bit of protein, a mid afternoon snack, and then dinner. That is my usual. And if I stick to that, I am good. I make sure there is a fair balance of everything.

But then I get the prowlers on and all bets are off. And it doesn't even hit at the same time of the day. Now that is frustrating. I structure my meals and snacks to account for fiber, protein, blood sugars and carbs. B/c my diabetes is diet controlled, I am usually very good.

Every two or three days though, I get these prowlers on and I wish there was an OFF switch b/c they take over. I never eat to the point of binge but even an extra 300-500 calories (which is what is usually is) undoes my diet. Do that several times a week and you have a pound gained before you know it! Oh I know about healthy snacks and keep them on hand. And I try to keep junk to a minimum. But I can still take in a lot of calories. They are usually not empty calories, but calories nonetheless.

So how do I NOT prowl and graze when the urges get so strong?????

When we go out to eat, the first thing I do is ask for a to go box with our tea. when the food comes, I immediately put half of it in the go box. they give you way too much food any way!

then, if it's something that Matt will eat for lunch, I take it home. If not, I just leave it. I'm always very full with just half the food!

Regarding portion sizes....I pay CLOSE attention. Especially with the carbs. I love to nosh on a couple of chips, but they add up fast! So just one ounce for me. I put it in a pretty little bowl, and immediately put the bag back in the pantry. That's it.

If I'm in a restaurant and I have rice or mashed potatoes, the first thing I do is push half of it away. I can take it home and have it tomorrow. Depending on the size and what it is, I do the same for protein as well. I eat all the veggies! So a $15 dinner feeds me 2X! I just supplement at home with salad or a veggie. Now that's value.

Sue, you are screamin' with determination. You can do this...go for it! We're all here to support you!

So sorry Sue about your down day. I have them too. I don't deep down clean unless I have people over. It's so funny that we joke about it when we have a party...woohoo we're gonna have a really clean house now! We ought to have friends and/or family over more often so I'll clean!

Everyone has given you such good ideas. One thing that no one has said is to watch your portion sizes. Although others have talked about weighing of food, even though you're eating carbs, it shouldn't matter much as long as you're watching those portion sizes. I have a friend from weight watchers who stopped counting her points for 2 weeks and still lost because she was keeping her portions down. Try that too because it really works. Glad you're not so down anymore and glad we're all here to help lift your spirits!!!

Blessings...
Kelly

PS...I lost 22 pounds last year and then gained them all back once I stopped walking due to my foot injury. Now I've started losing again, but I had to start from scratch. Hang in there dear friend. It will get better!

HAHAHA! Now that's the Sue I know. I know you love you. and I love me too. You are a lot like me. I do have my down times, but I can't stay down for long. I like to laugh too much. Actually, I found out years ago that I was definitely not going to be rich or well endowed (ahem!) but I found out things like sunsets, sunrises, hummingbirds, laughter, those things are here just for the taking and I take them a lot!

Now I have a beautiful Poodle that makes me laugh and smile every day and a great website with wonderful friends whom I have never met, but who know more about me than the people that I associate with! Life is funny sometimes!

Thanks Jane. Yeah that weight gain is a mess for sure. My ticker here says I lost 10 but I found 8 of them again. EEK That is why I was a little down yesterday. 8 pounds is almost a dress size. I went to put on one of my nice pair of jeans and I could not clost them. Then I tried a second pair and ... Sigh. I got a little down about it as you read in my first post.

I had a healing session with a friend a few months ago and she said I need to love me and my house just as we are. Most days I can do that well, but sometimes, like yesterday, I need a little swat across the head (or some kind words from friends) to make me remember. LOL

Thanks for that link. I am behind on my reading. That was a good article. I'll just have to jump back up on that wagon and start over.

Our menu will be simple. I will do my potato salad (with spuds from my garden), crock pot homemade baked beans, wienies, hamburgs and chicken breasts (which DH WILL grill), and a fresh veggie salad. Someone else is bringing drinks, someone else nibblies, and prob a special dish or two. Some are coming a great distance so can't bring anything (Texas, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland). Costco will be my hit for keeping things simple. My f-i-l is paying for the food and paper supplies so that is a big help. He is such a sweetie. He says he can't Do anything to help so he wanted to pay for the food and supplies.

We'll pull it off. I figure if something isn't done, those visiting can pitch in to help.
or go sit down somewhere and stay out of the way. LOL

I can only hold a crowd this big in the summer when the weather is decent b/c I can used my screened in patio for overflow. If it isn't raining, my yard is in shade from 5 pm on. AND - YIPPEE - I found out my noisy neighbor will be gone for the weekend. Yeah, things are looking up.

Bright Blessings

Hi, Sue. I empathised with your post yesterday, but wasn't sure exactly how to reply. Glad others have taken up the ball.

Seems one issue is the relatives. IMHO, someone going to another's house for a party is just plain rude to bring up the host's (or hostess') weight up as a topic. After all, isn't it a party? And the host is putting out a lot of time and energy--to "reward" that with unsolicited criticism isn't kosher (or done, or whatever one's ethnic background).

Plus, there's the touchy side issue of weight gain. I've been dealing with that too since the plantar fascitis cut back my exercise this spring. I haven't taken enough time how to reflect that in my spark signature, admittedly (though I had managed to zero out most everything else in my spark preferences). Anyway, I appreciated last week's daily spark blog about the shame and pain of that issue. (link way below)

I have a small, cluttered house, too, which is one of my excuses for not being a hostess! But for a church group, for example, I was able to use a spare church room and the kitchen, which eased matters considerably. Frankly, I'd keep the folks out of my house as best as I could, clutter or no, just because I really don't appreciate being criticized in my own space.

As for menus, I'm of the simpler the better mindset. I know catering is expensive, and frankly it seems it would aggravate the existing financial imbalance. Maybe if they brought some pot luck, the balance would even a bit, too, but it seems like they know mooching too. Anyway, melons are really simple and versatile this time of year, and lots of stuff can be made ahead of time, with little heat in the kitchen (which is important in summertime), like a crock pot ham.

I'm also a big fan of Aldi's, especially for this kind of event. I know they have a few stores in Pennsylvania, but don't know how close one might be to you (there's alwasys aldi.com). For me, it's usually worth a trip every week or 2 to stock up on basics, from canned tomatoes to yogurt to milk (a lot cheaper here in VA than PA) to bread. IMHO, it's worth a special trip for any group hosting event because their specialty frozen and snack products are of really good quality and low prices (and I don't stock them in my pantry otherwise). Their produce prices are fair, but higher than the Italian market in Philly or our local Korean greengrocers here, for example (if you have access to such). But at $.89/lb for frozen Butterball turkeys or $1.29/8 oz slab Mozz or Jack or Cheddar cheese or $3-7 for a nice frozen German dessert or strudel, plus a changing variety of frozen appetizers, its definitely worth a 40-mile round trip for me. Oh, I know alcohol is county-based in PA, so if you choose to serve it, I'd call ahead. Aldis have beer and wine at their VA stores, but not the MD or Philly ones (they also own Trader Joes so the quality price ratio is good). www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=the

Gotta love the snob nosed relatives. I try and remember I like were I live, how I live etc... Not easy especially when anxiety takes over. I like the catering idea. As far as weight - check how much you are eating. Maybe it isn't enough.
I hear you because I am in similar shoes!nHope all settles soon - Jean

Thanks ladies.

I used to be so anxiety prone it wasn't even funny and worked very hard to lose it. Today was just one of those wacky days. I just need to remember not to give my power away. :-) and set healthy boundaries.

I actually do most of the diet things that were suggested. I think a combination of diet controlled diabetes and a thyroid prob don't help. Now, I say thyroid but doc refuses to agree. My TSH levels have been steadily dropping for 3 years. I am down to 2. I know .5 is the lower range of normal, but I have gone down a point a year and I can't help but think my thyroid is struggling. .5 is minimum but there are docs who say that normal is different for everyone and it is possible you are in trouble with even a 2 if it is too low for your individual system.

As far as company, I will do it. Our parks are all booked up and no room at the inn. lol Fortunately, our older son is the only one staying here. And he is helpful. :-)

Our house is 900 SF and yes, being small clutter is a persistent prob. I am a great hider of it though! lol

Mary, I do love myself. Some days though the old broken records raise their ugly little heads. I yanked the needle off today to shut it up! lol And I actually for financial reasons decided not to join the gym for the swimming. When we looked into it, we just couldn't swing it right now.

I actually went out with my niece for the day. I had a ton of stuff to do but decided to go have some fun instead. Yeah me. I found a wonderful lady bug dress up outfit for my granddaughter for her 4th birthday. She loves dress up stuff and I know she doesn't have a lady bug. :-)

I lead my Reiki Circle tonight and am back in form. A little good energy from my students and you wonderful SP friends balanced me back up. I knew I could count on you.

Tomorrow is a new day.

Bright Blessings
Sue

(((Sue)))! My good friend Sue! I want to start by saying: WELCOME TO MY LIFE!!!! Relatives smelatives! Matt's family acts horridly to me.

I live in a 3,000 square foot home, but when Matt's hateful old RICH mother comes to visit, you would think I lived in an out house. She is snooty! She would look down her nose at me, but alas, the old harridan is only 4'11" HAHAHAHAHA!!!

But, she has a way of throwing her head back in a haughty way and giving me what I call "the hairy eyeball!" that sets my teeth on edge.

You do have the option of having it at a park. I think that you have a perfectly nice place, but you are like me, you stress when someone is judging you. Well, I have decided not to do that anymore.

Stay away from the ones that you know will discuss your weight or say anything negative. Breeze by, say a few words and then look around and say Oh! I'll be right back. then go back to the ones that you like. Also, tell dear hubby that if he doesn't help, he will have to do all the cooking when they come or all the cleaning the day before, or something along those lines. You have been sick too and it's time to put the proverbial foot down.

I have been off the wagon too! Carbs carbs and more carbs. But, I have decided that I can't do that. I am a diabetic now because of my weight gain. So, I am doing just what Gerry does. Salads, fresh veggies, fruits, fibers, and so on. Also, you can't go totally off of carbs. Those people that did the atkins thing long term had nasty little side effects like hair loss. not to mention the horrible stomach issues. ACK. So treat yourself to some things that you like that have been changed. Like, if you want a pancake, have an eggo waffle with sugar free syrup. There are so many options for the foods that you like that are low carb today. And when it gets to the point that you are just craving so badly you are going to have a hissy fit, then treat yourself and go on about your business.

I lose motivation too. Matt doesn't need to lose weight so I get no help there. It's just little old me and my tiny little poodle.

I've just decided that I have to suck it up, get back to tracking every bite I take, every day, period. It does work. I also am forcing myself to walk on my treadmill. It's making myself go in there and start, after that, it's not big deal! You can go to the mall and walk around the mall with your tennis shoes on. Walk fast, no shopping. Just our little Mall in Decatur, Alabama is 2 miles if you walk on the outer edges of the halls and around 4 times. It is air conditioned and there are so many people to watch you will see, you will enjoy yourself and it will be over before you know it.

If you have one of those ipod thingys listen to music. I have an FM radio with ear buds (yes yes I am behind the times!) and I listen to my favorite station. It does help.

By all means, get back to working with your wii. I know that you are really not feeling up to par, so go slow.

I agree about a new outfit! treat yourself if the money is there. All the stores are getting rid of their summer stuff right now because they have lots of fall stuff already in.

the water aerobics idea is a great one! You will love it. I did and there was no pain because of the buoyancy.

Lastly, you and I, my friend, have got to learn to love ourselves more. You are on my prayer list!

Hi Sue, Gerry gave some very good advice on eating etc.. so I ditto what she wrote.

I know exactly how you feel about your house size. I live in a very tiny house. I am not sure of the square footage but I do know that many people would not consider living in a house the size that I do. One thing that is a pain is that clutter shows more in a smaller house. So take some boxes and remove things that you don't need sitting out. Store it all in your bedroom....they have NO reason to open your bedroom door. Don't put stuff in your oven...lol..I did that before and forgot it until I turned the oven on and then started smelling it melting!

Hopefully the weather will be good and you can have them outside. They don't need to be sitting in the house if you and your hubby are outside. I hope I am not coming across as a b****. It's not that I don't like company but my house cannot hold alot of people!
If they all have to be inside, get ahold of some folding chairs. Then they don't have to be sitting there making faces because there is not enough sitting room.
Throw some cute rugs down so they can talk about them instead of focusing on the size of the room.

I think decluttering is the most important thing. Just shut the doors on rooms they don't need to be in. I never walk around someone's home and look into rooms that have closed doors. I don't care how someone lives. If they live in a tent and they are good people then I will sit on the floor of the tent. I have been in large, fancy, new homes and they did not feel homey at all.

I wish I lived near you because I would have you over to my tiny house! Plus I would come to yours and help you get ready for your company. It is an added issue that people in larger homes don't have to deal with.

Another option....tell DH that you changed your mind on having it at the house and hold it at a local park. Just an idea!

Keep us updated on how things are going! I wish I could be of more help...but trust me I do understand the small home issue!
Take care, Laurie

Hi Sue,
Pearls? Pearls! I've got lots of pearls for you.

First of all, I see you've LOST 10 pounds. That is terrific! Focus on the achievement you already have and moving forward. There's no point in mulling over what is in the past. Who has time to waste on that?

Carbs! Here's a couple of ideas to eat less of them:
Have one meal a day without a starch. A lot of times, I'll have what I call a BIG salad for lunch. I throw a whole bunch of things in it (such as greens, tomato, cucumber, zucchini, edamame, mushrooms, etc.) and add chunks of leftover chicken or sometimes tuna with low-fat mayo.

I tend to snack around 5 or so in the afternoon (my husband gets home around 7 / 7:30 so we eat late). Frozen grapes is my fave snack. Cold, sweet, tasty!

IF I crave carbs, I will have a measured portion of chips that have a decent amount of nutrition in them (that would not be any of the popular snacks like Doritos). I find a lot of these good choices at Trader Joes and Sprouts (don't know if you have these stores, but maybe something along those lines?).

That's a good lead in for the next subject. The SCALE! I measure EVERYTHING!!! Drives my husband nuts, but he's starting to measure my stuff now when he doles out the dinner. I use the 1 cup measuring cup a lot too....especially with rice, which can really add up.

Next up: FIBER. It fills you UP. If you're not getting enough, check out the Fiber One products. Try a 1/2 serving of the cereal on your favorite cereal. In the afternoon, have a 1/2 or a whole bar. I have just a 1/2 bar once in a while.

I fell on a concrete fall several weeks ago too. Stubbed my toe on what I tripped over (really bad), hit my head on the garage floor, and of course, went down on my knees too. So I hear you on that one.

It's hot here too. I walk early in the morning, or around 6 or 7 in the evening. Sometimes, I take 2 walks to break it up. It's sooo good. It's when I do a LOT of thinking. I work out a lot of issues and I get a lot of creative ideas during those walks. I come back home totally primed!

For your party, if you can swing the $$$s, why not have it catered? And go and buy yourself something new to wear to that party. Yeah, maybe they have bigger houses, but so what? They could all be cash poor. I could go into a whole tirade about "The Millionaire Mind" (a great book that I live by and highly recommend!) here, but I won't. Bigger is NOT necessarily better. Oh, and "matched everything" is not very creative! My house consists of mostly vintage furniture from the 50's & 60's (cheaper than buying new AND it holds its value), and an eclectic mix of Swedish and vintage doodads, paintings, and prints, and homemade curtains! Show off your style!

If they start preaching about weight, change the subject. It's just not up for discussion. Talk about the latest Harry Potter movie instead. Don't let anyone get in the way of your goals!

Lastly, track, track, track. There are a zillion articles written about how successful people track their food. I've been steady on it since January. Trust me, it works, and it takes about 10 minutes a day to do. You have no idea how many times I've said to my husband "don't throw that box out", because I may have to enter that food in as a new one. It all becomes habit for after a while.

Whew, that's enough for now. I hope this helps. You CAN do this.

In closing, you did say you have a Wii. If you have Wii fit, start off with the soccer ball game. So much fun....I start shrieking at the TV! Gets you pumping!!!

Let us all know of your progress! Gerry.

Peace, Love, and everything Groovy!

Hi all

I give 2 thumbs up to anyone who gets through this. I just need to get it out.

I am disappointed in myself. Although I have changed many eating habits over a period of time that are healthy I am not dropping any weight and in fact am gaining again. I have made changes to my diet are good ones and I have embraced them entirely.

Lately, I notice though that I am craving carbs again. I can't seem to stay away from them. All the healthy enjoyable stuff I eat is totally erased when I pig out on the carbs.

And to top it off, with the high humidity (and coming off that nasty summer cold and asthma) I am not walking or doing my Wii. Plus I had that six weeks of recovery from falling on my knees on the basement concrete floor.

I am not one to get too 'down' but today as I look in the mirror I am very disappointed in myself. My usually cheery outlook is foggy - prob from all the carbs! LOL

Ok one more thing. I think I know what the emotional component of this is. And I know it is important to identify the emotional component. I thought I was ok with it all but realize I am just b.s.'ing myself.

Next weekend many of Phil's family members are coming in for an event (about 20 people). I will be hosting a cookout Saturday. I am not a hostess-type. They all live in big fancy houses with matched everything. Phil and I are housed in a small comfortable lived-in house. Our whole downstairs would fit in their living rooms! All three of our bedrooms would fit into one of their master bedrooms. I know some will be judging it all. And I am not comfortable with all of his family to start with.

And to top it off, several of them haven't seen me since I ballooned up. Normally I don't stress but for some reason today I got up feeling blechy about the whole thing. I know at least two of them will give us 'the lecture' about weight. And another will look down his nose at our lifestyle and why we don;t have bigger & better. I have decided that if that starts I am going to just tell them to 'can it' please. There are several people coming I really do enjoy being around and am looking forward to seeing them again. I want to be sure the 'judgers' don't ruin that.

And lastly, hubby is doing next to nothing to help me get ready for this gathering. I find that very frustrating. Again though he is coming off that nasty bronchitis so I know he is tired.

Sorry for whining but today I need a tad bit of encouragement. I know you guys will do that for me. emoticon Anybody got any pearls o wisdom for me? I really need to get on the right track again.

Thanks everyone.

Sue
