How Skeeter (my dog who passed in January) got her name.

My son was 10 years old. There was a sign in our neighborhood giving a reward for the return of a lost blue heeler. So my son was busy looking for the blue heeler.

He was outside playing while I was inside cleaning house. He came into the house carrying the ugliest dog I had ever seen and said "Mommy, is this a Blue Heeler?" Sigh.

It was dreadfully hot outside (the middle of July) so I decided that we would keep her in the house until we were able to find the owner. We called all the shelters, put up signs, and looked for signs, but nothing.

Mean time, she entertained us with her delightful personality. She watched tv and barked at birds and horses on the tv. She was so goofy and clownish that I called her 'skezeks'. This is what my dad called my sister and me when we were being goofy.

Finally, when no one claimed her and we were falling in love with her, I took her to the vet and they said she was a poodle mix. I took her to be groomed and she was really adorable! They said she was about a year old and probably had never been groomed.

We were going to give her a real name, but skezeks kind of stuck. I was telling the story at work, and a lady told me that Skezeks (spelled differently) was an orphan left on a doorstep in a comic strip called "Gasoline Alley". That fit her so perfectly! She was an orphan kind of left on our doorstep. (Later I realized what my father was REALLY saying to my sister and me when he called us 'skezeks'. He was saying that we were adopted and not really his!)

Later my son began calling her 'Skeeter' as a nickname. It was much easier to say and less confusing for other people.

So that is the story behind Skeeter's name.

I bought one of those machines that converts pictures to digital images, so I am going to try to get a better picture of Skeeter posted. I'm also trying to get a better picture of Charm, but she doesn't like the camera flash and turns her head or runs away, so I'm still working on that.

Oh, my. Sorry I misunderstood about the shaving, although I have known people who did it. But they were experienced groomers. I never felt skilled enough to attempt it myself. I think the cleaning that we all do is much better. It does make sense to shave the tear stained places.

I really like the idea of those little pads to do the cleaning around the eyes. I wish I had knew about those when I had Skeeter. I still may check them out because sometimes Charm's eyes do require a little bit of cleaning.

This forum is a wealth of information!

No Mary, I wouldn't want to give antibiotics to Ginger for her eyes. When Ginger is groomed she seems to stay clear of the eye stains and boogers for awhile.
I clean her eyes with these little eye cleaning pads that I got at Petsmart. They seem to work really good.
Her eyes don't stain nearly as bad as they use too.

Oh brenda you are exactly right! I wouldn;t shave dry crusty boogers off either. I really was talking about the stained hair beneath the eyes where the tears stain it. Yeah, I get warm water and get the boogers out too. Or, and april will tell you, I get them out with a finger nail if we are riding in the car and I see a HUGE booger in her eye! My poor little booger faced Poodle !! HAHAHAHA!

I also have some really gentle anti bacterial soap that I got from bath and body works. It has lemon in it. I put a little on the corner of a wet wash cloth and scrub lightly and that helps too. During the first two weeks after April is groomed, that keeps her eyes fairly clean, but then it starts to discolor anyway.

I don't want to give april antibiotics either. Her doctor told me that it would make her build up a tolerance to antibiotics and it would be harder for them to work when she had an infection.

Tylosin is the antibiotic that helps with the 'eye boogers' or tear stains. My previous dog, Skeeter, was taking it for colitis. But let me tell you, it has a really nasty taste. I had to have it put into capsules so that she would take it. But there is a lot of controversy about taking it just for the eye issue.

Charm has a fairly dry eye, but for Skeeter I would get a cup of warm water and dip the corner of a wash cloth in it and just wet the areas until they softened and then I could get the 'boogers' out. I also groomed her, and I wouldn't recommend trying to shave off dry and hard 'boogers'. I never felt comfortable doing that, but then I wasn't the most talented groomer, either!

As far as my baby's name, Charm came with her name. And it really fits her. But she gets called Charmy, Charmster, Charmbolay (my husband thought that one up), and several others.

There is a longer story behind Skeeter's name. I will write it in a separate post probably tomorrow.

Toodles!

Mary, the stuff they put on their food maybe tasteless.
I put Dinovite on Ginger's food once a day for her coat and itching problems. It is tasteless and she gobbles her food right up.
When I use it all the time, she has no itching problems and her hair looks so good.
Those long ears just look so pretty.

There is some stuff you can put into their food, but I think it might be antibiotics, not sure, but I don't want to put anything in her food. It's hard enough to get her to eat as it is!

I am thinking about getting one of those real small beard trimmers and letting the groomer show me how to shave her face, but mostly I think you just cover the eyes and shave lightly.

Ginger and Red has those too! I was trying to think, awhile back I heard something about how to stop that.
I was going to ask the Vet the other day, but forgot to.
Maybe we need to search that out.
if I find out anything, I will post it.

Appreciate the comments about Mighty Joe!

The mention of "Boober" brought to mind the fact that sometimes I call Mighty Joe "Booger". This is because he has eye boogers that I have to wipe off of his eyes once in a while!

But I'm sure we all have dozens of names for our wonderful pets!

Peace, Love, and everything Groovy!

That's a hoot Mary! My Ginger doesn't look like a Boober, but for some unknown reason, I nicknamed her that about 7 years ago. My hubby thinks it is funny!
We even have some friends that call her Boober instead of Ginger.
Poor Ginger will answer to either!
April doesn't look like a Boober either.

Sarah came with her name and since she was a registered show dog before becoming the puppy mill mommy, the lady would not let us know her registered name.

Honey is the color of "pure" honey. Her full name is Bare Honey...not to be confused with Bear Honey...lol. My daughter started out with the nickname of Pooky for her, though. She didn't like to be out calling "Honey, come here", especially in the middle of the night. Anyway, she answers to both Pooky and Honey.

The story of Mighty Joe Young.

Mighty Joe was born "near Pasadena" according to the California breeder, Dorothy. She was the owner of Mitejoe's dad, Casey. His mom was shipped to CA from NJ. When he was a young pup, he and his mom (and possibly more pups) were shipped to NJ.

When the NJ breeder (the owner of Mitejoe's mom, Secret) opened the crate, Mitejoe came roaring out. The breeder immediately thought of the gorilla, Mighty Joe Young.

The name on his papers is "Secret Agent" which refers back to his mom, Secret. I have twisted the words of that song and I do sing it to Mitejoe from time to time.

Anyway, back to our story. Mitejoe was supposed to be a show dog. Didn't happen. She later told us it's because he's too tall (about 15 1/2 inches at the shoulder). The NJ breeder put him up for sale via a website called Cyberpet.

We had just lost my beloved Stevie the Wonder dog, who was also a mini-poodle. We called the breeder; she was about an hour away from where we lived (I lived in NJ at the time). She interviewed us, and then we went to meet her and Mighty Joe.

The rest is history. We decided not to change his name. I was inspired by the "Mi-te-jo" campgrounds near my brother's home in NH for the nickname. We also come him "Joey" (in honor of Joey Ramone), and "Joseph" when we are angry with him.

Now here's the killer part. Before we moved to SoCal in 2001, I looked up the CA breeder. Turns out that Dorothy lives 9 miles from us. She is in her mid-70's and has been working with poodles since the 1940's! She's got great photos on the walls in her home of prize poodles (and herself) from many, many years ago.

Dorothy grooms Mitejoe, for ....ready for this...$25. And she will board him when we go away for $8 a day. I give her a lot of extra money. That's just waaaay too cheap!

And of course, all of her poodles (she has about 8 right now) are all related in some fashion to Mitejoe. His half-brother Murphy, passed away last year. He was sooo crazy. He bit me in the knee once!

Peace, Love, and everything Groovy!

HAHAHAHA Rosa, you are not going to believe this, but April's Daddy calls her BooBoo, but most of the time he calls her boobie or boober! HAHAHAHAHA And of course every time she has visited BooBoo she got confused when I talk to Deb's BooBoo!

April got her name because she was born on April 16th and I thought it was a great dainty girls name. She got the middle name of Lynette because you really need a two syllable word in order to scream their two names when they are in trouble for it to carry well. HAHAHAHA

My Ginger is named after a spice!
When she was a pup she was a dark apricot, and she looked kinda red too. I told the hubby that she looked spicy.(she is a champainge color now). He said we could name her Ginger, like the spice ginger. So, there you go!
Ginger is her name.
Ginger's full name is Belkays Ginger,
Her Daddy is Belkays Wee One
Her Mother is Belkays Precious Lady
Most of the time we call her Boober or Ginny Boo!
