Sorry to hear about Strudel. I hope she's doing better. Personally, I wouldn't bathe her until her wound's healed. Daily brushing has kept my poodles and bichon clean, and they don't even have doggie breath, presumably because of the milkbones, greenies and toothbrushings! Cleo also doesn't tolerate the hairdryer's noise, though her pup loved wet fur and cuddles so much she tolerated it. I minimized her baths to protect her skin, which I heard is more delicate than humans'.

Strudel's stomach troubles and loss were another double-whammy. Cleo can be tremendously food-motivated. I knew she was getting over her loss when she finished off the tomato sauce from a can of sardines that my dad gave her, followed by muzzle-cleaning (and joyous) rolls. When her stomach gets upset, my vet always suggests chicken and white rice or cottage cheese for a few days. Generally, I substitute brown rice, and Cleo picks out the chicken or turkey meat. She hates going back to dog food!

Hey Dee! well just the fact that you are doing some exercise will make you feel better about yourself. One sure fire way to be really ticked off at yourself for what you eat is to track it on this website. I was out of control once or twice. but oh boy when I added everything I had eaten and came up with several thousand calories, it kind of snatched me back to reality!

Little Strudel will probably love being in the shower with you!!!!

Hi Mary,
Thank you so much (and everyone else, thank you for your thoughts and prayers). It was so great hearing from you. I always light up when I see April's cute little picture on here.

How have you all been? I've been trying to keep busy. I went to the Y this morning. I seem to be doing well with the water aerobic exercising, but then I sabotage myself with the eating. Can't seem to get back on any kind of healthy eating program. Right now I have heartburn and don't know what I ate today to cause it. Oh well---I'll just pop some generic tums from Sam's.

Strudel is curled up on my bed right now, just waiting for me to join her. She's in desperate need of a bath, so I think I'll take her in the shower with me tomorrow morning. The temps are supposed to be in the 80's here tomorrow (unheard of for this time of year) so I won't have to worry about her getting sick if I don't dry her completely. I use my hairdryer on her, but don't always get her completely dry. I'm afraid of burning her skin with the hot air.

Well, time for bed. Just wanted to thank you for your kind words. It's so nice to have friends like you.

Hugs,
Dee and Strudel (Yes, my name is also Donna.) emoticon

Oh Dee I am so sorry about little Strudel's troubles, which I know are your troubles too because of how much you love your tiny little baby. I am so glad that she is cuddling and cuddling with you. And she may get her energy back to play a little when the infection is gone in her tonsils. When the white blood count is high and it is fighting infection, it is very tiring to the body, especially of one so small. Wow! I didn't even know dogs had tonsils.

Then, to top it off, she is having to do some major healing in another place because of the injury to her little foot. If you stop and think about it, what a strong little baby to be fighting to heal. I love that about her. Even with her problems that she was born with, she is still just as sweet and gentle as ever. Some little pups would become really mean and bitey.

I am sure the both of you are still grieving so hard over the loss of your beloved Tommy. So, not only is Strudel healing in two places in her body, but her little heart is broken too. And I would imagine, yours too.

I am so glad you wrote to us. You both are in my prayers and thoughts.

YOur friend, Mary

Strudel has had one trauma after another, starting with her choking on food and either seizing or passing out and peeing at the same time while we were in DC two Saturday's ago. She was also having trouble walking and wouldn't eat much. She was walking like a drunk. Adam and I took her to the emergency vet in Alexandria, VA and at first they though her gums were pale and wanted permission to give her IV's. After the vet examined her and I gave her a brief synopsis of her medical history, she said that I could take her home but to watch her carefully and not to give her anything to eat or drink for 24 hrs. She was able to eat a little finely chopped scrambled egg late Sunday night. I drove back home Monday. I called my vet while on the way home and told them what had happened, and I took her in when they opened the doors Tuesday morning. Then when I got her home I had my vet run blood work and found out her white blood count was elevated, showing infection. She's back on Amoxicillian along with half a Chlortab twice a day. The vet wants her on the Amoxicillian for 30 days and then I'm to take her off of it for a week and have more blood work done. It looks like she's going to be on and off of it for the rest of her life because of her tonsils. Did you know that they don't take tonsils out because they'll grow back?

As if she hadn't been through enough trauma, Friday afternoon one of her dew claws got ripped out completely along with the top of her toe! I think she may have caught it on the security wire along the baseboard in the living room. She let out the worst sound I'd ever heard. It didn't even register that it came from her. I thought it was my imagination or that it had come from something outside, because when I checked on her, she was sprawled in an awkward position on the floor but didn't seem in distress. It wasn't until a little later when I noticed her lifting her left paw that I thought something was wrong. At first I told her to put her paw down because I knew she had a balance problem and was afraid holding it up would cause her to fall even more. It wasn't until I picked her up and she curled her paw up again that I knew something was wrong. I touched it and she cried. I immediately took her back to the vets and discovered that the whole nail along with the tip of her toe was gone. It was matted with blood in the hair on her leg. It didn't just break off, it was pulled out completely. My poor little baby has been through way too much!

On top of all of this, she just hasn't been the same since Tommy died. It's rare when she wants to run and play. All she wants to do is sleep or cuddle as close as possible to me when I'm in bed, or curl up in my arms or lay across my chest when I'm sitting in the recliner. I think she's in mourning too, and most definitely depressed.

Hugs to all,
Dee and Strudel
