i'm okay with it now. seeing our other three little ones happy again and back to normal is enough comfort for me. it was tough for the first several days, but i'm really okay with it now. the vets office promised me they will find him a very good home and snickers, buffy and raider and happy to have their home back to themselves without the gentle giant. buffy especially is not terrified daily anymore and her face is healing nicely. major had gotten a hold of her...not on purpose mind you, only in play, but of course she didn't know that. he had broken the skin on her face in several places and she is now getting better. bless her heart...i'm guessing this really is for the better. yeah, i was very angry at first...he was in the doghouse so to speak! lol

Man, Kelly! I just finished reading all the messages about Major, and I don't think I'd be as kind. I'd be inclined to pack a suitcase with your husband's belongings and take him to a remote area and drop him off! I'd tell him to fend for himself and do some soul searching before returning. I think what he made you do was VERY CRUEL.

Thank y'all for your kind words. I just want him to find his forever home, and the vets office promised me they wouldn't have him put down, that they'd find a good home for him.

I just wonder if he's thinking...when's my mommy going to pick me back up? She's been gone for over a day now and I miss her! Bless his heart, my heart just aches for him!

Oh sweetie. I am so sorry. Glad I am not around your hubby or I would say some really nasty words that I learned in the army. and I would probably throw him around some too. The Army is very useful sometimes.

Major just needed to be trained, you are so right. His progress was arrested when he was abandoned. But things happen for a reason and it may be that Major will make someone who is alone and has no other fur babies a wonderful friend and companion. My prayers are with you.

Oh Kelly

I am sorry. Praying that Major finds a forever home. And that you find solace in the fact that you tried to do that for him.

Very sad news. My husband made me return Major. Normally I work nights, but have been on administrative leave and have had to work days. The dogs have been home all day long by themselves. I've tried to explain to hubby that Major needs time to adjust and that once I'm back on my regular schedule he'll no longer be by himself...he's been tearing up mail and trash that hubby didn't take out...and I can train him better, but hubby wouldn't hear of it. He actually locked him out of the house yesterday, was slamming doors in my face and refused to speak to me other than to say "you take that dog back tomorrow, or I'll take him out to the country and just drop him off. He'll then just have to fend for himself" I couldn't bear the thought of him doing that to such a sweet natured dog. I cried and cried when I took him back today. It just broke my heart that I had to leave him there. He was so sweet...he'd come up to you and just lay his big ole head down on your chest so you could pet him and love on him. So, so sweet and gentle! My little poodles were getting used to him too. Hubby's such a jerk!

Thank you...he's actually answering to Major now so that's good. He barked for the first time the other night when I was working. Hubby said it was 1230 at night and Major let out several "woofs" at the bathroom window. Scared the bejeebies out of Travis as he was in a relatively deep sleep. Wasn't all too happy with him. hahahahahahha. Glad I wasn't here, I'd probably jumped out of my skin! lol

I just checked your sparkpage and Major Toby is very handsome! 53 pounds is a very nice size for a standard. He will probably gain a few pounds, and if you leave the hair on his legs a little longer as it grows out he will look full and strong. You might want to measure him at the shoulders, that will tell you a lot about his size compared to other standards. As you probably know, anything over 15 inches is considered "standard" but most of them average 22-26 inches at the shoulder. My Kona girl is 24 inches and 45 lbs and I think of her as the "typical" size standard. Our Hilo is HUGE, (82 lbs at 10 months old) and was bred to be that way. But any "show dog" breeder would think is form is terrible! He is long and thick bodied.

Anyway, sorry to ramble on. Your new baby sounds just fantastic and I am very happy for all of you!

I have to take care of myself first, to be able to take care of the people I love.

I started Sparkpeople on 5/9/08 at 205 lbs. My ticker shows my start weight as 209 which was my highest weight in late April.

We just put in the new doggie door...my 300 pound 6 foot 4 inch hubby can fit thru it...lol, compared to our little bitty door, it's huge! WOW...I don't think Major has ever used one before. Doesn't have a clue what to do with it, but he's so smart, it won't take him long. He absolutely hates his feet done. That's gonna take some time too! Poor guy :-(

OHHHHH, he's a sweetie! Look at the pics of our new 53 pounder! He is the sweetest dog...won't even growl at my little ones. They're growling at him, but he's not aggressive at all!. He's by my side right now, then off he goes. New big doggie door to go in tomorrow!

And that, dear Kelly, is how Nina became 'the black rat'! Petite little 9lb Nina next to the Moose (55+lbs) and yeah...she looks like a little black rat scurrying around trying not to get tangled in all the long legs.

But don't think for a second that our little girl can't hold her own! She may be tiny, but she's fierce in the ring (ok, I'm in hysterics over here...better pee before the dogs get on MY case! haa haa haaa)

OMG! Y'all are making me laugh...hard, lol! How funny, Major Toby...that's too funny, hahahahahha! He's got "stockings", but since they're so shaggy and since I like shaved feet, I think I'll ask my groomer tomorrow what she might be able to do with the legs after she shaves his feet.

I hope he does okay with my little ones! We have a small doggy door, but will have to up-size it for him, so will have to cut a BIG ol hole in the door to install a larger doggy door for him to fit through. My tiny toy only weighs a little over 5 pounds and this big guy will be her giant! lol

I have to agree with Sue (and Major Toby is a cute name! lol). He will bond to you...

When Lily came to us, she had been abused for 2 years, was scared, had the saddest look in her eyes and didn't seem to trust anyone. It didn't take long before she was rubbing up on us, being dorky, eyes shining and running around with the other standard. As much as I miss that crazy poodle, I'm thankful we're the ones that adopted her and gave her 2 great years before her addison's claimed her.

Have faith, you're a poodle person and Major (Toby) will see that and love you for it.

Major Toby! :-)

Yes he will bond with you I am certain. Rescues often understand how much a person wants to help them and they become very loyal.

Everyone said b/c of the condition Shilo was in (also shaved - that is so pathetic looking a poodle with no hair!) that she'd always be anti-social. The exact opposite was the case! With a little loving care we quickly bonded.

And she was a very bright loving girl.

I would not be surprised if Major Toby comes out of his shell once he knows that he has a forever family. I look forward to seeing pics of him.

Ummmm, he looks more like a Toby to me! But...my husband is dead set on Major...dumb name for such sweet man! lol He told me I've named all the other ones and its his turn to name this one.

See, I'm a poodle person (through and through) and I think my dogs know that. They adore me and it shows. They hang allllll over me and lay on me when I'm laying down on the couch or laying in bed. Plus, when anyone comes into the house when I'm home alone, they bark like crazy. But...when my hubby or son are at home and I come home, they don't bark. They are protecting me with their barking and raising cain. It's so funny. You ought to see my Raider and Buffy when Travis (my husband) even comes near me. They go nuts! They won't bite him, but you can tell they're trying to "protect" me from him. Weird.

I wonder if this new dog, even though he's older, will take to me like the others have. Dogs just know dog people. I had poodles long before my husband came into my life. I used to breed miniatures and had two of my own when I met and married my husband. My kiddos grew up with poodles (I was a single mom for 13 years). I don't know if Travis had a dog as an adult. He doesn't have the patience with our furbabies like I do, and I treat them more like people...they are my family!!!

I met him today. He's very handsome and really not all that big. He's about two years old actually. He was matted and had stickers all in his hair and so the vets office shaved him. He's got a mustache and a goatee. For a standard (and a male) he seems to be on the small side. Not skinny really...looks like he was well taken care of. He looks to be between 40-50 pounds. He'll get his shots today. His teeth are nice and white. His feet will have to be trimmed cuz I don't like bushy feet at all. I like to keep my poodles feet well trimmed and his definitely aren't! He wasn't hyper at all (like my little ones tend to be sometimes). He'll certainly have lots of room to run around as we have a huge backyard. Maybe I can incorporate him into my walks. That'll be fun! We'll see how he does on a leash.

He was abandoned so he has no name. The folks who've been caring for him (Deputy Sheriff's) have affectionately dubbed him "Major" and that's what my husband wants to stick with. We'll see! I can't wait to go pick him up tomorrow!

That's exciting news. I am so happy for you. emoticon

We renamed our rescue b/c she was terribly abused. She shied from the name, so we changed it from Coco to Shilo b/c my son said she looked like she'd gone thought the battle of Shiloh with all the frostbite and other injuries. LOL The two names were close but different enough that she took right to it. She was a delight those 13 years we hard her and she was the most beautiful chocolate mini you have ever seen. (Of course, I am quite biased in that assessment!)

I'd let you new poodle help you name him. If he likes the name he has, great. If not, he will let you know.

How wonderful!!! I'm so excited for you! Our 2 standards came already named because they were rescues, is he coming to you with a name since he's already over a year old?

Hang out with your big boy for a couple of days and see what names come into your mind. AND POST PICS! We all wanna see your handsome new addition!

I don't know. That was something I was going to ask y'all. Since I've never adopted...we've always gotten our doggies little bittie, except raider and we kept his name from what the breeder had been calling him...so I'm not sure how that works. He's big and beautiful and solid black. Apparently he's extremely calm. My husband said his employee had him in her home for several days (she can't keep him) and he just sat very nicely in their living room throughout the evening. Never had an accident, just was the sweetest man anyone could ever want!

For those who've adopted out their dogs, how did y'all come up with their names? I'll meet him for the first time tomorrow. Is there anything specific I need to know about the big guys?

My husband just left me a vm...he's letting me adopt out a Standard male. I just talked to the vets office and he'll be neutered tomorrow. He's a black male about a year to a year and a half old. Very well behaved. Beautiful dog. I just have to pay for his shots. WOW...just told my little ones, you're getting a big brother, apparently he's great with all other dogs and I'll have the weekend with him...as I'm off, then off M-W of next week too so he can get used to his new home. Pics will be forthcoming. I'm so happy!!! YAY!!!

Kelly...originally from Denver, CO, but now a Texas girl by choice!
