I am not exactly sure how it all fits together either but hopefully I will get it all happening in my favour soon.

I have 3 months to get it sorted.

Hey Sharyn, that's great. I know from my doc that the extra exercise will help increase the good cholesterol. The higher good cholesterol is supposed to help get the bad cholesterol lower...not sure how that works. Maybe like building muscle...muscle weighs more, but requires more energy thus helping to burn more fat.

Yesterday I found a great book about cholesterol, & as result, I have stopped counting fats at all. If I am going to eat avocado, nuts & the special marg I have, then my fat counts will be through the roof based on the Sparks ranges.

I purchased the special marg & some Heart-Active milk which both have added plant sterols. These actively reduce the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed into the blood.

Actually there is a conditioning trick that I learned from a nutritionist, but, it's really harsh. It works, but, it's hard to experience.

We had to put our favorite food in our mouth and chew but NOT swallow. While we did that we watched a slide presentation of all the "normal" foods people crave but covered with things like maggots, bugs, mud, feces, etc. And in the backround played a recording of white noise.

For years I couldn't look at a potato chip without gagging. I can eat them again, but, not many.

Thats funny Shari! My daughter wont eat cereal w/milk for the same reason. I always worry about her getting enough protein because she won't eat meat, eggs, and not much dairy.

I have never tried yogurt covered cheerios, they sound yummy though. I will have to look for them.

Yeah. One of the best "perks" of working at the bank is that they give us a monthly allowance to buy snacks. Our Facilities Manager buys the snacks for the main branch (where I work). Sadly he does NOT pick healthy snacks (despite being asked by many people)....really hard sometimes when there are all these yummy snacks I could have for free and I have to walk up the street to the store to buy something healthy. But, the bonus to that is the extra exercise.

I love them. I eat them dry in the morning. I eat my yogurt first, then my fruit and then the cheerios. Since I eat them dry (one cheerio at a time) they usually last until lunch time.

The big marketing thing for Cheerios in the US is that they are heart healthy and will lower cholesterol...but, you have to eat the original ones, not the frosted or flavored ones.

How weird, we do have frosted Cheerios, but good old fashioned cheerios have no sugar added. I like them with banana. I didn't realize how different the food was in Australia until I met you Sharyn. Oh, BTW... my daughter asked me what vegimite was the other day, and even though I have never tried it I could tell her what I learned from you. LOL!

wow.....there is so much good advice here. I really do love you girls. Yeah, I know I will get it sorted without meds..... it was just such a shock.

I can see where I went so wrong. Although I was counting their calories, I was still eating those mongrel chocolate eclairs & other cakes high in fat content.

That will emoticon as of now.

I have not eaten butter for over 6 months but still too high in other nasty fats. I have been using a dairy free marg called Nuttalex. I love avacado, so that will be playing a bigger part in too along with more nuts. I tend to avoid nuts because of the cost BUT that idea must go emoticon along with the cakes.

So..... here we go on yet another life changing challenge.

As to being hereditary....... to the best of my knowledge, I have not heard of any of my family with the problem BUT that is NOT to say, they haven't had it.

Oh Sharyn that sucks! I think Leslie is right though about the hereditary thing. Just make sure you dont lower the healthy fats. Was it you that said you have a problem with seafood? If so remember to eat some avacado or nuts or olive oil everyday because I know that raising your good colesteral with the omega 3's can only help your situation. When I was a strict vegetarian I was eating very little fat and my good colesteral went way too low my doctor said that is almost as bad as the bad colesteral being too high. Hang in there!

yeah... I am going to see my Dr. on Friday of next week. He phoned the results through for me & was not overly concerned but said that it definately needs to come down. We will discuss it more then. I will be on a SUPER strict diet now too as I cannot afford for it go any higher.

My brother in law is a skinny little weed to but his levels were dangerously high, so I know it is not only to do with our weight or build. I was just so shocked that it had gone up instead of dropping.

BUT.......... that said, I can look back & see why it has happened.

Hi Sharyn, I'm sorry to hear about your cholesterol, but, it sounds as if your problem is more likely hereditary than dietary, and you probably will need meds I'm sorry to say.
When my cholesterol was found to be elevated, I went on a very strict diet for a few months, but my cholesterol either didn't budge, or went up.....and I have been on meds ever since. I hate meds too, but, oh well.......at least there ARE meds, and my cholesterol is fine with the med.

I am SO frustrated. Despite losing all the pounds I have lost, I have also been losing the battle of the Cholesterol.

In May of 2006 I had my Cholesterol levels tested & I had a total of 5.6. This week, thinking I would have dropped that to a more acceptable level of below 5, I find that I have in fact gone up. It is now 5.9 AND if it continues to rise, I will be on medication to reduce it. Like I need more meds. Hhmpfffff !!!!

I was aware that weight loss does necessarily mean lowering Cholesterol but I sure as heck did not expect it go UP. It was such a shock.

So now, I need to concentrate on watching my fat content even more than the calories. I know I have gained control over the portion distortion that has plagued my life for so many years......... I just need to shift my focus now.

So the decision is made........... less animal products & more vegetable products.
