When we went out for dinner last night, mom and I had steamed veggies instead of potato or rice. They were just perfect. Still slightly crisp. Nice mix of broccoli, carrots and zucchini and yellow squash. I had to pick out the yellow squash because I'm allergic.

I snuck lentils into our kids food the other day after they turned their noses up at the idea of them...they ate every bit. lol.

Gotta try those tomatoes. Keep forgetting to get them.

I like chick peas but not hommus, not last time I tried it anyway.

My mom bought sun dried tomato and basil flavored hummus for me. Three of my favorites all in one. On a toasted whole wheat mini bagel...filling, nutritious and low cal! Hmm since I have to be home again tomorrow, perhaps I'll have that!

I love Hummus.

My daughter has a great Hummus dip recipe. You put a couple of baby beetroots in a blender with a little bit of garlic. Then you mix it with hummus & a creamed cheese. Cottage cheese would do just as well though.

They're the main ingredient in hummus! I love hummus on toasted whole wheat mini bagel for breakfast. Now that we have some in the house, I'm gonna have that for something different.

Jen, do you like garbonzo beans (chick peas)? They're a great source of protein. I'm not crazy about them, but they're okay in veggie soup or thrown in a salad.

Interesting but I'd follow what Sharyn reckons. Best way to elimate all possiblities.
Running- one veg u won't get me near is brussel sprouts, yuk majorly. My hubby won't eat many vegies bar raw carrot n cabbage, potato, frozen peas, beans n corn. Really picky he is.
One thing I've been able to substitute here on SP is pumpkin in place of potatoes. Nowhere near the cals but still has fibre n protein. I occasionally mash the pumpkin n add some lentils. You can't taste the lentils that way n its a trick for adding fibre n protein.

A mind only works if its open.

Shari, can I suggest you go with ALL bell peppers for 4 weeks in order to clear your system of all possible allergens.

Then introduce the green one a little bit at a time until you notice a reaction. Making notes on the amounts you have eaten & any noticable reactions.

Then you start again & introduce the red ones & so on.

After you have done all this & you are still having reactions, it is a fair guess that you are at the very least intolerant to bell peppers, if not an allergy.

Wow, I would hate to have a problem with any veggie. I can almost say I have never met a veggie I didn't like. However, I can't quite say that because I LOATHE frozen and canned peas! I think they are the most disgusting food! I remember being a kid and my parents physically forcing me to eat a spoonfull of peas and I threw up all over the table. I have never been able to eat them since.

My dad is extremely allergic to shellfish, but he can eat fish fish (if you understand what I mean). He get's the longest hives I've ever seen! They're about 6 to 7 inches long and about 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide. And very puffy! He itches like crazy. But with him his blood pressure goes sky high instead of dropping, and he gets the wheazy astha attacks with it. Then he starts vomiting. It's gotten worse each time. He keeps saying he wants to try just a little because he hasn't had any, but we won't let him. We only make shellfish when he's working days and isn't home for dinner.

Oh I sure do know the symptoms..... have suffered from them often.

Probably the least one is hives on the body and can range from anything in between to stopping breathing.

I am anaphylactic so I need to be EXTREMELY watchful of coming in contact with it.

Here is a description from Wikipedia.......

Symptoms of anaphylaxis are related to the action of allergens and other anaphylatoxins, which act to release histamine and other mediator substances from mast cells (degranulation). In addition to other effects, histamine induces vasodilation of arterioles and constriction of bronchioles in the lungs, also known as bronchospasm (constriction of the airways).

Symptoms can include the following:

polyuria (Urinary frequency)
respiratory distress
hypotension (low blood pressure)
encephalitis
fainting
unconsciousness
urticaria (hives)
flushed appearance
angioedema (swelling of the lips, face, neck and throat)
tears (due to angioedema and stress)
vomiting
itching
diarrhea
abdominal pain
anxiety
impending sense of doom

I sometime wish I could eat fish but more often than not, I just replace the fish in recipes with chicken.

They are very interchangable..... so if you find a chicken recipe you fancy, dont forget that you can make it with your favourite fish too.

I have a yummy recipe to recommend. Remember how I detest fish? Well, last night mom made the "Fish Veronique" recipe from the SparkRecipes.com.....I could EASILY have eaten 2 or 3 servings of this fish. I LOVED it. I asked her to move this to her keeper book and make it again and often. So now I'm up to 3 fish recipes that I like.

My grandmother always grew her own and made pies from the fresh. And I suspect that the mashed sweet potatoes she gave us was really pumpkin! But since she's passed we're reduced to the store bought pumkin in cans (tins)...not as good, but will do in a pinch.

No, Jennifer...no pinching!

Hey Shari, That is a great article. I am not a big fan of the grapefruit as a fruit but I love its juice. And why do you mostly have canned pumpkin in the States???? Fresh is so much better for you (less sodium) & it is such a diverse vegetable.

Broccoli is one of my favs too in the veges.

I love grapefruit. Especially broiled (just a bit) and then sprinkled with sweetener (I use Splenda).

Usually I don't have time to broil it, but I do like it super cold with the sweetener. Just don't like it room temp.

This info was posted on another team (not as great as this one). Since we're all trying to get healthier and somewhat slimmer, I thought you might be interested. I'm in on all but the sardines. YUCK!!!

Some foods make it really difficult to lose weight. They create their own self-sustaining cravings ("Betcha can't eat just one!") and play havoc with your blood sugar and, ultimately, your waistline. But other foods do just the opposite. You might have heard that broccoli and blueberries can help you shed pounds. Well, here are some other tasty options that will fuel you up and generate weight loss. Make these foods a part of your daily diet and watch the pounds come slipping off.

1) Grapefruit. Ever tried the grapefruit diet? Turns out there may be some good research to back up grapefruit's reputation as a fat fighter. In a recent study at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California, researchers studied the effect of grapefruit on weight loss and found that eating half a grapefruit before a meal can actually help people drop weight. The researchers studied the effect of grapefruit capsules, grapefruit juice and real grapefruit. All three seemed to help, but the folks eating the real grapefruit got the best results. The mechanism isn't completely understood, but the results speak for themselves. As an added benefit, grapefruit contains cancer-fighting compounds like liminoids and lycopene, and red grapefruit has been shown to help lower triglycerides. And half a grapefruit has only 39 calories.

2) Sardines. Sardines might just be one of the greatest health bargains of all time, and they're a boon to anyone wanting to lose weight. First of all, sardines are loaded with protein, which helps stabilize blood sugar, makes you feel full and helps stimulate metabolism. Second, they're a great source of omega-3s, which not only strengthen the cardiovascular system but also are helpful in boosting mood. (And when you're in a good mood, you tend to crave less junk food!) Third, sardines are convenient, easy to find and cheap. And because they're very low on the food chain, they're remarkably free of contaminants.

3) Pumpkin. You may know this vegetable for its central role in Thanksgiving celebrations, but it's also one of the greatest weight-loss foods ever. Plain old canned pumpkin is absolutely loaded with fiber and has a mere 40 calories. Dozens of studies confirm that high fiber intake is associated with a host of health benefits, including weight management. Pumpkin is also the easiest food in the world to prepare. You can sweeten it with Xylitol or Splenda, sprinkle it with blood-sugar-lowering cinnamon and nutmeg for good measure, throw in some healthy almonds and make it one of the best tasting weight-loss treats around. It's filling and delicious.

4) Grass-Fed Beef. I'll be honest with you: Meat is a great diet food... that is, if it doesn't contain antibiotics, steroids and hormones. Eat grass-fed beef and avoid the health concerns that go along with eating meat while getting all the terrific benefits. Buffalo burgers are a good alternative if you can't find grass-fed beef. High-protein diets are associated with weight loss for a variety of reasons: protein stimulates metabolism, helps you feel full longer and helps decrease the desire to overeat. Grass-fed beef has a high omega-3 content, giving you multiple health benefits into the bargain.

5) Green Tea. This natural weight-loss stimulant might not be a food, but green tea is still a great slimming solution, not to mention that it's rich in antioxidants, promotes heart health, aids digestion and regulates blood sugar and body temperature. It raises the metabolic rate and speeds up fat oxidation, thus helping people lose weight. Drink it daily to boost your metabolism. Some research has shown that five cups a day is the magic number for fat loss. As an added benefit, the theanine in green tea is also a great natural de-stressor.

I love peppers! We use the green, red, yellow and orange ones in stir frys. I also like them roasted with zucchini, mushrooms and onions. Or better yet, my brother and I love to grill them on the bbq grill, mix them with fresh tomatoes from the garden, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh sweet basil and mint with a homemade balsalmic vinagrette. But if you make the salad with the mozzarella, you only can make enough for right away because the vinegar sucks all the moisture out of the cheese overnight and makes it really yucky.

I get cravings for 5-bean mix, the type that come in tins with navy, red kidney, lima and other beans mixed in. I add a tspn of light sour cream with some shallots. I can eat them lunch or dinner no prob! Its not junk n keeps me away from choc.

Especially because you look nothing like her. I also loved that pic of you with the jaunty little cap! That was so cute. My aunts have pictures like yours. And I know my Aunt has at least one of my grandmother when she was little with her mother. And someone snagged the one with my dad and his father when my dad was about 2. I just love those old black and white pictures. We have some of me...I should dig them out and scan them.

Sharyn I love your new picture! Carmel popcorn is one of those things I can do without. Not big on pies or cakes either. My biggest downfalls are potato chips and ice cream...and I haven't had any chips (other than sweet potato crisps) this year!

mmmm....yummo!!! I love the tropical fruits. My brothers has been living in tropical Queensland for so long now that they crave the everyday fruit we have her in the south.

As to popcorn.... I can take it or leave it (mostly leave it) until it has been caramelised. THEN it is "Good-night Irene" to the weight watching.

I love fruit. And I love trying the "exotic" fruits that we don't normally get in the states. Like star fruit and asian pears. When I was on my cruise in January I had the tropical fruit plate almost every morning... 1 thin slice each of watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew; a pineapple wedge; 2 slices of star fruit and 2 slices of kiwi. Tonight I'm snacking on sweet cherries, watermelon and popcorn.

Well done Shari. I know what it is like to eat all that ice-cream in one sitting. I have done it often and THAT is why I refuse to have it in the house. I wont even let anyone buy it to put in my freezer for them to use, coz I know I will get stuck into it.

My mom bought the little ice cream cups. I think the brand is Carnival. They are the brainless kind. One cup is a serving (110 cals). Of course, for someone who can eat a whole pint at one sitting, these are just a tease! The other night I was hungry for an ice cream cone but we don't have cones. So I decided I was going to have a whole wheat english muffin with sugar free jam. I still had calories left, so I had a 1/2 cup of vanilla frozen yogurt (which I don't really like) and I would take a bite of the muffin and a spoon of the yogurt! Tasted like an ice cream cone to me!

It's not that bad...I was able to discipline myself to eat about 1/8 the container last night, which I estimate to be about 1/2 a serving. At least I didn't eat the whole thing, like my poor hubby did...I love him but he has NO willpower. :o)

I also like the Special K Snack bites and the Quaker granola bites. I have Vanilla and Strawberry Special K bites and Chocolate Quaker bites...so I can get my nutrition, my crunchy, and my sweet all in one....and they're only 90 cals for a pouch!

Will have to look into the bars not heard of them. I do use Kelloggs Nutrigrain bars. I also like Jello fat free puddings to satisfy that sweets craving

they sound good. Not sure if we can get them here in Aus but I will keep an eye out for them. I am always looking for 'good' snack foods but so far everything just too hihg in fat.

I think this topic is a godd idea too.

You go girl.

I hope no-one minds if I start a new thread...and if you do, I'm hopeful it'll just drop down to the bottom of the list soon and not bother anyone again. :o)

I have a new snack I wanted to share with my bestest Spark buddies...Kashi GoLean cereal. They have several kinds but this one has a whopping 10g of FIBER in each 1 cup serving...and, without milk, only 140 calories!! I've been enjoying it dry for my morning and afternoon snacks - that's 80% of my daily fiber right there!! WOOHOO!!! Better yet, it tastes GOOD.

Don't let their verbiage scare you off, though..."crunchy fiber twigs, soy protein grahams and honey puffs" didn't really get me excited, either! A coworker let me try some and that did it.

Anyway, just wanted to share!!!
