I dont envy either one of you with the mowing chore, one thing I dont have to do from the sixth flooor. Mind you I put in my time doing the one of ten acres we had that was grass when i was a teen and that was a full time job just about

I have a large vegetable garden and also alot of flowers--perennials and annuals. Alot of trees-- trees for shade, decorative and fruit trees. So, have alot of yard to mow and weedeat. In addition to the yard I mow at my church---it take me about 2-3 days to get them completed each week. But, makes for good exercise!

we have new shoots on practically every plant since the wonderful rain. Except of course my poor birch tree. Still not sure if it has simply shut down & gone in to an early dormancy or really has croaked. I guess time will tell.

You will all hear from there if it has survived.

What there is left of my garden is looking very beautiful too, this morning, after all the all night rain we had. We had 27.6mm of rain over night. And compared to what we have been getting.... that is a HUGE amount.

That's the beauty of having a patio garden - it's well out of the reach of anyone passing by, as its located on the 2nd floor of the 3-level condo we're in!! They're ours, all ours!! :o)

If only I could get the morning glories on the other side of the condo to bloom...heavy sigh...not looking so good for them!

nope.... they are too water hungry. The succulents I use are more drought resistant..... Kalenchoe, Aloe, Lithops, Saxifragis, Sedum, Cotyledon, and some cacti. There are so many types of these succulents & they have the most gorgeous and unusual flowers.

I found this description online..........

What is a Succulent Plant?
Succulent (Latin: succos = juice, sap) plants from more than 60 families and 300 genera have evolved special water-storage tissues in thickened or swollen leaves, stems or roots as an adaptation to arid environments. By making the most of scarce available moisture, succulents can survive in habitats that are far too dry for most other plants.

Leaf Succulents: Leaves are almost entirely composed of water storage cells covered by a thin layer of photosynthetic tissue.
Examples: Aloe, Haworthia, Lithops, Sempervivum.

Stem Succulents: Fleshy stems contain water storage cells overlaid by photosynthetic tissue. Leaves are almost or entirely absent, reducing surface area to prevent evaporative loss of water.
Examples: most cacti, Euphorbia obesa, Stapelia.

Root Succulents: Swollen fleshy roots store water underground away from the heat of the sun and hungry animals. Stems and leaves are often deciduous and shed during prolonged dry seasons.
Examples: Calibanus hookeri, Fockea edulis, Pterocactus kunzei, Peniocereus striatus.

Combinations of the above types may occur where more than one organ is used to store water. Some Caudiciform Succulents store water in both roots and swollen stems and may have deciduous or long-lived fleshy leaves.
Examples: Ceraria pygmaea,Tylecodon paniculata, Cyphostemma juttae.

Yep.... but with the right succulents. we can still have a very 'showy' garden. And they need hardly any watering.

Yes it is a shame you cant put in whatever you want, but if it were to get to showy they might think you were breaking the rules

Hi Denise,

I cannot wait until we are able to have all those lovely flowers again. The water authorities are telling us that it could take another 2 years of good rains before we can consider our water supply safe.... so recreating my garden is a long way off. I am putting in a lot of succlents bit by bit but they are not quite as pretty as your lovlies.

I am not the creator of our gardens but the keeper of the weeds and the harvestor of the crops. lol My husband has been perusing his Burpee catalog and we have selected our seed varieties for the garden. With the weather we are having, I don't think we'' be safe to plant until Memorial day this year! He also has 5 flowerbeds that I help maintain during the summer. He grows daylilies. bearded irises, black-eyed susans, gerber daisies and other easy to grow flowers. It's amazing to see how a few flowers can dress up a corner of our yard. The winds that we had the last two days however have blown all the tulips away and the daffodils are looking a little peaked.

could well your problem. When they come home from the nursery or shop, they have been very protected & need toughening up a little. Another name for it is... pampering.... just for a little while. Until they get used to the treal world.

yeah.... they can be a problem here too...

I can remember my Dad running out to cover all the new seedlings of an evening so the frosts didn't get them.

Sudden frost is the danger here, it just takes just one day of not paying attention to ruin everything

We need to harden our plants too but for the opposite reason..... we need to harden them for the lack of water. It has taken most people a very loooong time to realize that we have been over watering our plants. Trees & shrubs survive better in the ground in given a long deep watering weekly or fortnightly or even monthly.

Except for a pair of begonias and some miniature roses, I am mainly at the planning stages. It seems we go through this every year, we think it will never warm up and then it is instant heatwave. I am trying to get them our for a few hours just to start hardening them

well as we are approaching winter & might even get some rain..... we just might be able to do some gardening.

Today, though, I am going to transplant some succulents from the backyard to the front yard in an effort to save them from the digginest dogs I have ever had displeasure of owning.
