How about some nice chicken soup, Maui? emoticon Mine was Thai coconut soup, and it has a tiny kick to it thanks to the chili paste....might kick that plague in the teeth! And I saw Lei's pics on FB of the rainbow, what a sight! We just have clouds....but had the Sierra blue skies yesterday while skiing, hard to beat the blue skies, green pines with a coat of white snow...I just love that picture!

And thanks Malia! I'm pretty proud of my improvement, hope I do even better at the end of this training. And then I have another program to try, "Train to be even more Awesome!" Probably more of the same, but I may as well keep going, at least it gets me lifting heavy things!

Kay- Yes...we got about .1 of an inch at my house...not much in the bay area. But...enough more in the north and east bay to wash the air as the breezes blew. Yay. This morning Leilani and I awoke to an golden glowing sky...bright saturated color out back (East), then went out front to sprinkles and a brilliant double rainbow...so maybe there is hope. Sounds like you will get more snow!

Malia- Testing the knee...hoping with followup care regardless of how it feels at teh time. Yes? Ice and elevation for a bit... You must be feeling better to give it a go.

Thanks Kay and SD about my miles...but...Didn't walk Thursday, felt more off from this plague..so rested. But got back to it on Friday ad worked out back yesterday. Might have been too soon...had a rough-ish night with congestion and cough...might have to pull back today, hydrate etc. No worries...this will pass. I am faring better than the others in my house...so I will babysit myself today.
Maybe the tide is turning in many ways around here...whew!

Maui, still feeling good? You sure do get a lot of walking in! That's awesome!

And Kay, congrats on your assessment! That's some major improvement!

I've ridden the bike 4 times in the last 6 days so doing well there. Gonna give my leg a short run in the morning just to see where it's at. I'll be sure to follow up!

Did you get some rain, Maui? We got a nice soaking last night, from the sound of it. It was nice enough to wait until I got home to start the downpour! Not sure how I got that lucky! And great job on the early morning miles!

SDL, can you adjust the handlebars as well? Don't want to strain your back while your leg is healing! But that's great that you can bike, and stay active and heal!

Assessment went really well! I doubled my hanging reverse row, and I think my goblet squats as well. Only got in a few extra push-ups (I had 19 the first time, 22 this time...not sure why that didn't improve as much, but I only took a day off in between my last workout and this assessement). and I halved the time on the 100 swings. I did all 100 without a break, so that felt great!

Howdy,
SD-good for you with the bike. Feels so good to work hard.
And yes...uncertain which is 'better'...virus or asthma. I am thinking more today, it's asthma. Sad. If we can get some rain, maybe I can get my lungs to calm down.

Kay- Larry in a tutu...hahaha...I don't think that's gonna happen. And yes...I have been walking in the very early morning hours before cars get driving. And weights here at home. And inhalers in between. I've gone 5, 5 and 7 miles so far this week. And stretching. :)

No more lbs down...but joints all feeling well...which is good. Feet, knees and back...all good.

Kay, how did reassessment go? I can never get over feeling jealous that you can walk in to work. I mean, for a couple years now I just think, "Man, she's lucky!" every time you post that! lol

Maui, I hope you're starting to feel better! Hopefully it's asthma and not sickness. (Is one really better than the other, though?....)

I've been using my friend's track bike that he set up to be stationary in my living room for the week. It's specifically built for him and he's 7 inches taller than me, so it's a bit uncomfortable, even with the seat jammed down. I'm making do, though, because it just feels so darn good to be exerting myself.

Hope everyone is having a great week! Janet, looking forward to hearing how day 1 goes tomorrow!

Yeah, I'm going to have to get together with my sister about what to wear. Not sure I can get Larry in a tutu (but you never know!) but my niece might like that! I'm sure we can find something fun!

Maui, ready to rock on Monday! emoticon How'd it go?

I have my reassessment with my trainer today, then start the next round on Thursday. emoticon I walked in yesterday, and will again tomorrow....

Pedometer on, weights out, its monday!
I didn't loose over the weekend...a common problem...
But, feel good today. I feel somewhat accomplished I have to caught/plague that's in my house right now. The nights are just awful...and I am still OK...whew!

Malia, yep...so much love in the air for some of these events. I have only done a couple...but positive experiences. And what a nice goal to look forward too in May, with Mom and sister too. Nice.

emoticon emoticon Maui on that weight loss! That's awesome! I'm glad you're getting your workouts all coordinated to work with what you need.

Kay, that race is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!! There's just a lot of love in the air. You know how most races it's just people behind the start line messing with their watches and music and nobody is really paying much attention to anyone else? Not this one. There are costumes and smiles, and hugs from strangers (to spread the color, lol). I'm doing this with my mom and sister in May the day before I graduate. Neither of them are runners, so we'll probably walk the whole thing, but that's fine. These races are all about the people. emoticon emoticon

emoticon on the weight loss Maui! That's emoticon You and Leilani are rocking it!

And getting out the Omron again, I've heard that's a great pedometer, should be fun to watch the steps add up! I know fitbit told me how many miles I had done last year, I don't think it was over 3K, so that's great. And, yeah, REI is good for replacing stuff, they replaced my Polar GPS HRM when it broke. I think they have changed their policy now, you only have a year to bring stuff back, after that, too bad!

My niece was excited! I hope it lasts until the race! And there will be 4 of us, Larry's running it too.

Did my last de-load workout today....I meet with my trainer on Tuesday to do another assessment, then we'll start the next part on Thursday and Friday! Should be fun!

OK OK...hehe...all this fitbit talk and I went and found my OMRON step counter fro REI. Hehe...I spent maybe 3.5 years wearing this every day...never failed. I logged enough miles in 2010 to walk across the US...all 3000+ miles.

2012-33 was a rough and I put it away...so...guess...SD its time to start counting steps again. My knee surgeon also doesn't want me doing the 'big miles' anymore...walking (bike OK)...so, modify modify modify.

But, SD, a couple times my OMRON broke and REI gave me a new one...very cool.
So, anything REI seems to be a good investment.

Kay- haha...Was your niece excited??? So it'll be the 3 of you? In Folsom/Sac??

I have lost some weight the last couple weeks, btw...trying to get this new plan for me that works, incorporating the back, knees, bottom and asthma...lololol...a wee bit tricky. And not come on here and sound whiney.

You probably would with running though, when I did the marathon I had over 55K, and when I got home I had an e-mail from fitbit saying it looked like I could have run a marathon! I just thought that was pretty funny!

We've signed up for Run or Dye, my sister and I gave this as a gift to our niece for Christmas and Larry's running it too. Should be fun!

Where did Maui go?

No I didn't but I got into running so it's less of a priority now. Way to go on your steps! I don't think I ever went that many. I struggled to hit 10k.

Have you contacted fitbit support? I've heard they will send a new one....I know a few people who have had theirs replaced that way.

It's working now, but my step count for Weds was less than 300 steps! I take that many just going to the bathroom! Anyway....over 18K yesterday so I think I made up for the issue. And today is another de-load workout, so I'll see how many steps that will get me.

No problem getting to work on time today! This de-load program is short and sweet! But my fitbit turned off on me so I'm a bit peeved about that! emoticon I just get so used to seeing my step count, and it stopped counting sometime around 6:30 this morning, and I just noticed when I got home...

I've got a big scary exam this morning. Think I'll get some upper body training in after that, then acupuncture and rest.

Work for me....but I did get in my workout beforehand. And almost ended up late to work! emoticon But I start my de-load week now, so it will be a week of easy sets, just 3 sessions. Then I'll have to see if I can get an appointment with my trainer so we can reassess and go through the next half of the program!

That hike sounds great, Kay! And Maui, sounds like quite the experience. I would probably be better at going slowly if I had been there too. I'm doing it - going slow - but it takes so much self-talk! Lol

What are everyone's plans for today? Kay, I vote bike. I might hit the pool today. We'll see.

Massages and hikes...good good.KAy, that hill and canyon of yours sounds like it was good medicine yesterday. (Prob much better than football full of angst. lol.

SDL- 'better at heeding advise'...haha...well, for one I am older. And the last couple years was an education in rehab. 2012 was a doosey. I earned the record at our local PT for the most visits in 1 year on record. (It was not my original goal to seek such acclaim) They did give me an award for all my hard work...but yes...learned a lot and received a lot of advise if I was going to go forward.
Btw...the end result was pretty darn good considering.
So I learned to take baby steps, let my body heal, so I could go forward. Staying positive. Not ever giving up.

Sounds like a great massage, SDL, glad he found the source of your trouble, hope you're feeling the benefits!

The walk/hike was so nice...I took a little different trail over into the next canyon, then looped back to my canyon....probably around 6 miles. Saw lots of folks walking their dogs and others on mountain bikes, it's great to see so many people out and enjoying nature like that!

Maui, you sound much better about heeding advice than I am, lol.

Kay, how was your hike?

My massage was awesome. He found the likely source of the trouble. Apparently there's a muscle that goes up from the calf and another that goes down from the hamstring and the two kind of cross over one another behind the knee. I guess I had a couple knots in there. He spent some time working them out, then referred me to an acupuncturist for supplemental work, since I'm so set on doing these races. Appointment Tuesday!

Yep, it's easy to go from "do" to "over-do" without realizing it! Glad the rest is helping your joints!

SDL, enjoy your massage!

My plan is to get out for a walk/hike out back here in a few. Larry made omelettes for breakfast, and I'm still full. I keep thinking if I head out I'll end up hungry in the middle. Guess I could just bring a snack just in case? I wouldn't even second guess this if I was driving to a hike, not sure why this isn't a normal thing for these hikes!

Kay- glad you had that massage. I too had to quit using NSAIDS a few years back as well. Traded tummy problems for inflammation struggles as you know.
I tried a few...it be good if once i figure how to play them from this computer to my TV. That'll be much easier.
My impression is they are well done. A good alternative for me...with this air issue.

SDL- Oh, I am with you on being outside. Much rather hike etc. and i used to be a cross country runner and backpacker. Once the air clears, the hikes will resume for me. This asthma is a recent issue and doc told me to keep it calm, not let it get bad again. Nip it in the bud...never let it escalate...so, I am heeding his advice.

Kay- as an aside...I am finding this 'rest' for my joints revealing. Everyone is happier! haha...guess I can be know to overdo??? Sheesh...

I've done a few Spark videos, but it's been awhile! They are short, so I don't think you could go wrong by watching it through first to see if it looks like something you want to do.

SDL, hope the knee behaves now! I like ibuprofen, but had to stop taking so much when it made my platelets drop too much (or were they too high?) I think too low....I was bleeding all the time, not good! My doc said no more ibuprofen, so I only take it on occasion.

Had my massage today....should make my back happy, it's much better today than yesterday, so I'm hopeful there!

SDL-Yes internet diagnosis always a bit of silly...but sometimes it works. Good you are taking care.

My training needs to take a step up...somehow...trying to find a clearer path forward after last year and this asthma. But I shant get too discouraged...honest. I was checking out the indoor videos here on sp yesterday. Some look ok! Going to find a couple to try today.
Any recommendations?

Oh, you ladies are GREAT! Thank you SO MUCH for the love and concern and research and suggestions! Maui, I looked at the links and it's hard to tell, but it looks like the popliteus is a bit lower than where I'm feeling the pain. So hard to diagnose over the internet, lol.

So swimming yesterday was good (I think I said that already). I got in a 20 minute walk on a dirt trail, complete with stairs, yesterday and my knee did quite well. Then this morning I put on my new running shoes and jogged my pup around the block. Although I could feel enough to be conscious of the pain, it was not at all debilitating. I probably only felt anything because I was looking for it (a good thing!). So I'm going to head out to the lake tomorrow and give running another go. I promise to take it easy and to stop if things start hurting. I'm also going to take some ibuprofen tonight and again in the morning just to be safe.

But enough about me and my knee. I feel like the center of attention over here! (I'm not at all used to that - huge introvert over here) How is everyone else's training doing?

SDL, sorry to hear about that knee of yours! Rest is the main component, having the brains to rest it, and the patience to actually do it! I know that is the hardest part of life for me, and you are even more so Im sure! I am not in a natural state of rest, but if its going to repair a over stressed body part, I'd do it! Good luck and hopefully it wont keep you down for long! ***SNOW***

SD- Hmmmm...
Yes there are attachments from calf to knee. Such a complicated thing to diagnose. There is also a popliteus...http://massagetherapy.careerpathblog.com/tag/popliteus/

This is often the result of fatigue...and then this 'liitle guy' gets pulled/strained.

http://www.rad.washington.edu/academics/academic-sections/msk/muscle-atlas/lower-body/popliteus

Anyhow, Knees are tricky. I am a believer in facts. Facts come from good diagnostics...
RICE therapy is aways good,Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. But if the symptoms persist, please get an eval. :) As others know here on the deck, I am not a doctor, just someone who has had some orthopedic experience. LOL...
Take care.

No, it's my knee. Are there ligaments on the back outer side of the calf that attach maybe to the back of the knee? The pain (now that it's not that sharp stabbing pain and I can actually feel a source) seems to be originating from back there - more on my calf.

I went swimming today and could feel it a little when I was kicking hard. It's definitely doing MUCH better than a couple days ago.

Woohoo! Much needed rest day over here. Pajamas and a cushy bed! Hoping to be back in it tomorrow with a 40 minute run. We'll see. If I can even walk for 40 minutes tomorrow I'll be happy. Had trouble making it around the block with my dog yesterday. emoticon

starting round 6 today! It's the last round before my "off" week where it's light lifting, and I may get my trainer back to do a mid program re-assessment. Then I'll start the second half at the end of the month. It should be fun to start a new set of workouts!

Yeah, even my trail shoes which are made with additional rubber on the striking section can feel the rocks when I hike. The shoes just prevent bruising. I'm OK with that though. Maybe I'm weird, lol.

Hope you enjoyed the game, Snow! emoticon Glad the shoes put a spring in your step!

I have a pair of the toe shoes (Merrel?) I used to wear at the gym a bit, but can't run in them I don't even wear them anymore, maybe I will try again....I just have funky feet, neuroma, very high arches, etc!

I tend to run a lot on trails too....I know some folks can do the minimalist shoes there, but I'm a woos, like a little sole between my feet and the rocks!

Wow, thanks...that explanation was great, and gave me the giggles too at the end emoticon I know I felt like a "shoe -ho" getting two pairs at once....but yeh, I wanted a pr I could run a bit in, but still wear to clases, and a different pair with even more rigidity for my bouncier higher impact gym classes. Both surprisingly are Nike, and I do need the extra bounce and support as I was (apparently in my previous life) an Everready bunny! emoticon I do have a lot of shoes now that I think about it.... tiz the season to begin purging like Kay mentioned! ***SNOW***

Snow, these shoes are actually designed to be worn with or without socks and I always wear socks. They definitely do not put spring in my step though! Lol They're as minimal add it gets. Most traditional running shoes have upwards of a 1 inch lift on the heel, which creates that spring and propels you forward. My current minimalist are at 0.3 lift, and these new ones are 0. Minimalist shoes work completely different muscles and present new challenges ams promote a different running form than traditional shoes. They take some getting used to but I've been wearing them for 2 years now and LOVE them!

*education and promotion over* lol (seriously I can turn into a walking infomercial Sometimes)

Yours seem to be perfect for what you need them for, Snow! Are the 2 pairs for different things at the gym or do you just like some choice?

SDL- Congrats on ordering the new shoes, I love mine! I got a couple of pairs for the gym, wore one to steps and followed it with a zumba class, and my feet were so grateful and happy! I was able to really have a much more effective workout, dance my little heart out, without the discomfort of the shoes that obviously had broken down. Aaaaaaah, love new shoes, enjoy yours!! I checked yours out, do you wear socks with those? They look very minimal .... do they give spring to your step? Have a great Sunday... you watching the 49ers? emoticon

Kay.... got some snow on those hills now? I hope the rain didn't wash it all away....what is going on with the weather, huh? Sun is out down here, windy.... Im staying in and watching football, putting Xmas away, thinking tomorrow will be a hiking day if its not too windy....

I keep nuts and dried fruit around too. I dry plums from my Satsuma Plum tree. I cannot remember the last time I ate a donut...but do ike them, just cannot go there...

I love pizza too. My solution is everything made from scratch...natural yeast home-made dough. Then...it just happen haphazardly...have to plan ahead. Good regulator for me.

OK...rain, rain, rain...with a breeze please.

Oh, my drawer at work is full of nuts and dried fruit! (actually, I'm running low, better stock up again!)

Now, pizza, I love that stuff, rarely eat it though, we just don't do pizza that often. I know what you mean about food not making you feel good though, I used to love doughnuts as well, but can rarely stomach them anymore.

My potluck philosophy of late is I'll try anything that looks homemade, as long as it has ingredients I like (there are very few I don't like, so that's mostly everything!) but I pass on store-bought stuff unless it's something I really like, and there is no other option.

So, yeah, stock up! Those things will keep almost forever, and you'll be happy when you need them!

Kay, that's interesting! I just did my Wiki-research, lol. I could probably see me falling into mild orthorexia according to my answers to the diagnostic questions. I don't think my eating habits alienate me, though. And I don't have clear and strict guidelines on what is "healthy". I just won't eat out of vending machines, pizza and donuts are a NEVER (just the smell makes me sick), and definitely no fast food. If there happens to be a potluck or something then I'll eat what's there. I seriously limit my sweets consumption (like, practically non-existent). I don't know! I just know I would rather go hungry than eat the food that tends to be around me. I lost 5lbs last semester because of it and I'm not trying to lose weight.

Sometimes I remember to buy nuts and protein bars for my car and my bag but it's not consistent. I should just stock up on an entire semester's worth at the outset. That's actually not a bad idea! Huh. Thank you, Kay!

That sounds a little like orthorexia there, SLD, have you looked at that phenomenon? I don't like to eat pastries either, but I will eat something less healthy rather than go hungry (and my boyfriend will tell you me hungry is not a pretty picture!) just for my own sanity. I think if it's only on occasion it will do no harm, and as you know, low blood sugar and those effects are not healthy either.

can you throw a bag of nuts or dried fruit in your bag for emergencies? Or keep those things in your car or desk?

Omg snow, hummingbirds are adorable. Love them!

Food really is a conscious choice day after day, meal after meal. My challenge is that I am wired to not eat unhealthy foods (great!) But I'll actually starve myself over eating a pastry or something. Like, I won't eat all day long because I didn't pack food. It's gotten bad enough to where I'll start shaking and feeling sick and then I'll realize my blood sugar is low. That's the only time I'll indulge though.

Anyway, I'm working on it. I do really well when I have time to meal prep, my semesters just get out of hand Sometimes.

Yeah, we need some snow in a bad way up here! The ground is bare....not sure when, but I sure hope it comes soon!

I did my weigh in today, (only weighing once a week right now for my new program) and I'm holding steady, down 0.2 from last week, pretty good considering the amount of chocolate I've eaten this past week!

Being mindful is the secret I think...it's so easy to eat without thinking, it can be so unconscious - it does take a bit of rewiring, and even then its still difficult when so many want to sabotage our best efforts! Yes, Leilani is in a really , really good place! Following her lead will make her efforts feel even better.

Heading up to my son and DL's...more Xmas, dinner, gift giving and celebrating with them. Our other son is going with us, then off to Southshore to meet up with his GF and stay at her sisters house at Squaw Valley. I cancelled our stay at Donner and Truckee -- no snow really, so Ill try to wait until I can shred some mountains later. Praying for snow up there, and some good heavy rainfall down here!

Its so sunny out today.... filled the hummer feeders and they are all out there screaming their little lungs out they are so excited!!! They are having a party in the Japanese maple. I had brought the feeders in and had them soaking all day, and by evening I noticed a poor little bird attempting to feed off of one of the "icicle" string of lights!! slew right up to the tip of it and looked very disappointed he couldn't figure out how to feed from it!! So cute right now, cruising up to my doorway and looking into the living room to find me!!

Gotta get going now, have 3 hour drive, some grocery shopping, and cooking to do after that..... I think I just want to go home after this visit and just nap or lay around...what ever that is!!!??/!!!!

emoticon Love, ***SNOW*** emoticon

You can hang on! The cooking may shift some, but your eating doesn't have to...maybe think of it that way?

Good that Leilani is making such strides, she's working out, and taking care of herself, it must have something to do with your good example! And it feeds on itself, doesn't it? I think it's easier to stick to the good habits when you have household support!

Snow- Good for you...
Me too this year. Didn't even buy any! I made a cranberry pecan scone Christmas morning, with fresh fruit. I had zero chocolate! I had 2 folks give us cookies...so Hubby got to have some cause I baked none! Also a first. You know how Leilani is on a mission...well, she said "no cookies". So...there ya go.
No gain here over the holiday ...and she is down of course.

SDL- How fun you got to have a sparker meet up! we have done a bit of that here on the deck too. :)

KAy- Yes...that 'o chocolate. I am amazed how not baking or having the Chocolate here...might have just saved me. Now I do have my son and his gf arriving...so , I know the cooking will have to shift...I hope I can hang on.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

----Ghandi

I've taken to weighing in on Sunday's lately, just because of a different challenge I'm signed up for. So I have a couple of days before that happens, but today I will get to the gym for day 4 of round 3 of my new training program! Then just 3 more rounds to go for the first half! It seems to be flying by...

Good job resisting the See's, Snow, we have lots of chocolate around here, and I've not been so good at resisting.
