hehehe...hot tub addiction...of course you are. Silly question.

addictions...family... food...wine...sunrise...hiking...sun...I have a long list. I am here, checking my deck pals...another addiction.

I think I'll have a shot of ice cold Ouzo...I keep mine in the freezer.
Who wants a shot? Best ice cold...especially when in the hot tub.

Interesting how we all have our addictions. Surprised how many of you share the soda one. Never been a BIG soda drinker. Did Diet Cokes for a while, but didn't like what I was reading about them so I very seldom have one any more.

Busy, busy busy time! However, a little time in the hot tub is just what I need. Wonder if I'm addicted to the hot tub?

Life is good!

Mary... Yup on still no Coke (or any kind of soda) for a whole week now... Even resisted it at a little cafe we ate at after biking (glad they had lemonade on the menu... I know that has lots of sugar but at least not all the chemicals that soda has... When I have lemonade at home I use "organic" lemonade and dilute it with carbonated water...now I'm using about 2/3 water to 1/3 lemonade & it's still pretty tasty)

Maui... I tried making infused water with strawberries, didn't like it as much as the lemonade & carbonated water mix... Maybe I just didn't make the infused water correctly? (Followed a "recipe" I found online ... Decided I'd rather just eat the berries instead of putting them in water)
emoticon

Doing better on the bike... Got a REALLY cushy bike seat now that is SO much "better on my bottom" than the original bike seat was (you'd think with all my "natural padding" I wouldn't need a cushy bike seat, LOL)

Greek Fest on the deck tonight sounds AWESOME! Since we're on the deck there's no calories if we eat "baklava" (Not sure of that spelling???)

Hiya everybody!

Nice to meet you aster! Sounds like you have a wonderful garden! Mine is quite modest. This year we have tomatoes, cukes, zukes, onions and carrots. Our veggie CSA tops up everything we don't grow.

Choc well done on your bike ride! Looks like you and me both are breaking in our cycling shorts! Well done on the pop. That was a very hard one for me to break. Diet pepsi was my brand, "My name is Kelly. It been 10.5 months since my last drink."

- you're doing awesome!

Ugh dentist, I feel for you! I'm terrified too! I find listening to my iPod helps. Hope it goes well for you! (just saw that you made it - woooo, laughing gas!)

Mr. Sand - thanks for the congrats, Nice to meet you! Darn that voice, right? Lately mine has been talking about ice cream. Bah! Keep fighting the good fight. I do pellegrino too. I bought a Soda Stream so I can fizz up my water anytime I have a craving.

Mauima what are the fall garden plans? Up north here the season is winding down. Canning, blanching etc. in full effect. I love this time of the year!

Read Wheat Belly and am starting "In defense of Food" - have you read them?

Off to take Olivia and Argus for a walk - see you in the hot tub tonight!

Cheers,

Kelly

Happy Friday everyone!

Maui, Aster and Choc - thanks for the encouragment as I finally tackle my addiction to Coke Zero! Today was a little easier emoticon maybe because I know y'all have my back! emoticon

Choc I'm so glad your dentist was so nice to you - I know you're glad to have that behind you! Is your quest to lose the soda still going great?
emoticon emoticon emoticon

Maui - You are lucky - but those wonderful veggies wouldn't be on your table if you didn't work hard for them! What will you be planting in your fall garden? We haven't had rain now in more than a week so I'm wishing for some emoticon too!

Aster - Happy trading in Iowa and I hope you get that kayak trip in soon!

I've still got Maui's moussaka on my mind! Anyone up for a mini Greek fest on the deck this weekend? I'll bring paleo pita, grapes and ouzo! Stin Ygia Sou!!! emoticon

Pura Vida! emoticon

Morning deckies!

Aster- LOL...welcome Orion! Maybe we will get some rain. (Sorry everyone else) Hehe...Corn to Iowa. You trading? Sure hope you get a yak trip in.

Choc- Well done you! Finding good substitutions is so crucial. Make the sub a treat...Fruit infusion waters work too. Maybe research those...cucumber water is soooooooooooooo refreshing. Melon waters, (Lots of melon and herbs right now)
And great news you survived the dentist. On advantage we outdoor, hiking, hardworking folks have is lung capacity...breathe deep to get that gas working...lol...then you're good to go.

Mary-OK...good for you too. Giving up any soda may be one of the best things you can do for yourself. Living cleaner is a one food at a time task. But soda's have Soooo many health associated , a big one for us ladies...bone health. We cannot afford any loss. So, good for you! And you have a 'Lose the soda buddy'. :) Yep...farm to table food most nights here. I know lucky us. Fun you get to try and garden year round.

Kay- Have you recovered??? Training going ok? And another weekend is here...what does Larry have on his adventure list ?

Wood- LA...OK...yes....us west coasters do think of our LA...lol. So, what you up tooo???

OK...much to do out back...preparing my fall garden.
See you all later!

Choc, congrats on surviving the dental work. Dental health is so important for overall health. Mary, I have to agree with Choc about giving up soda. Soda is pretty rare around here. Maybe cut it out as any everyday thing and allow one as a treat once a week? Thou weekend we're bringing corn to Iowa. That seems backward, but I guess we ate only one county awY from Iowa. Tomatillos too, but since either WI nor IA is famous for tomatillos, it's less weird. Weneed to schedule a kayaking day now that school starts next week. Orion was in the eastern sky yesterday when I woke up at 4 a.m. Warm as it's been, winter is coming.

Mary... Stick to it on giving up the sodas... I "usually" only drank 1 diet coke a day, so that's probably easier to give up than if I was drinking more than that each day... Hang in there , you can do it!!!! I've made it almost a whole week with no DC ... Found out I like really cold carbonated water with about 1/4 cup of organic lemonade mixed in to make me "think" I'm drinking soda (mind games help LOL)

"Survived " the dentist... 2 1/2 hours "in the chair"... Replaced a crown and did a filling... Thank goodness for LOTS AND LOTS of "laughing gas" and a really nice dentist and his staff! (I am such a chicken when it comes to dental work!!!!)

emoticon Hi everyone!

Wow! Only 4 days since I've been here and I've missed a bunch!

Maui - I'm hoping you're right and I have year round gardening possibilities...I'm going to give it a shot - my tiny arugulas look happy so far! I may find that summer is the most difficult growing season here. Farm to table moussaka day - YUM emoticon

Kay - 9 1/2 hours of biking and scary adventure - I bet that beer did taste amazing! emoticon

Brenda - can't wait to hear more about your class emoticon - my son is taking AP biology and he thought he would stump us with some botany questions the other night - I think he was shocked that we remembered our phloem and our xylem and knew what ATP stands for (but we had forgotten the word "transparation" so he got us there!)

Choc - oh my goodness we are in the same boat but your is riding a little higher than mine! I gave up Coke Zero last Thursday...but Sunday I had a Diet Dr. Pepper (I walked to the grocery store so the voice in my head told me that made it not so bad - evil voice! emoticon )...then on Monday I was at my mom's house and I had some CZ's in her fridge so the voice said it was o.k. since I wasn't buying any new ones...but since then I've been "clean"...tried Pellegrino today for my "fizz"...didn't really do it for me...I eat and drink so clean except those dang sodas...but I was drinking 2 or 3 a day so it's time to give them up... emoticon ...& way to go with your biking!!!! emoticon emoticon

Tay - emoticon Look forward to hearing about your trip!

Wood - That sounds like the perfect one hour fishing trip! emoticon I'll check out that video soon...must be incredible!

Kelly - Congrats on your sweet baby girl emoticon you're going to have so much fun!!!

Aster - Congrats on your bountiful harvest! emoticon Can't wait to hear more about your farm!

Hope everyone else out there is doing great too!

Pura Vida!

Did a 6 mile bike ride last night... A bit easier than my. "Maiden voyage" last Sunday considering I haven't been on a bike in over 4 years... Hoping its a sign it will keep getting easier the more I practice (at least this time I didn't feel like I needed "training wheels LOL)

Heading out for a dentist appointment (I am absolutely TERRIFIED of dental work!!! Would rather swim with sharks than sit in a dentist chair!!!! ) getting a crown replaced and a filling... Hope they give me LOTS of drugs. & laughing gas so I don't even know I'm there ! I'm such a whimp!!!!!)

I tried to post on Saturday and it didn't go. Maui, I thought of you right away when I heard about the earthquake.

Kay, I'm glad you found your way. That was a VERY long day of bike riding.

Kelly, we haven't really met, but I'm so pleased that you're enjoying your time with your baby.

Wood, I can't believe you garden is wrapping it up so soon. We're getting ridiculous numbers of beans and cucumbers. Plenty of tomatoes and watching for eggplants big enough to harvest. We need to pull most of the corn this weekend and I just planted two kinds of kale for fall. Time to dig more potatoes and all the storage onions. Sunday, I harvested 8 cups of basil once I had the stems off and if we keep getting enough rain it'll be like that every few days until hard frost. We'll probably put up a hoop house for spinach and chard in the winter. Holding off on digging sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts aren't ready yet either. We're probably getting barn cats since mice destroyed the wiring of our old beater snowplow pickup truck.

Hi Snow, Choc and everyone else. Time to read and go to sleep.

Kelly - It's wonderful to see you back on the deck! Wow! 5 weeks already! Before you know it she'll be dating! Actually you won't believe how fast that happens! Enjoy every day and be amazed in the miracle that is her!

Maui - Yep I've watched that pool video several times myself. It's just so much like I picture the deck!!! ...and that grotto behind the waterfall certainly has me in mind!

Snow - Hiking much?

Only had an hour to fish before dark, but it was an amazing time. Blue heron, green heron, large book, ducks, kingfisher, an eagle, and oh yeah, lots of fish as well!

Life is good!

Sweet baby already 5 weeks! Like I said , one lucky baby. emoticon
New roof is going to feel great. No leaky roof ...whew! How do you feel today after that trainer ride?

Wood- I yet again watched the pool video again. Love that pool. Did you see Ben Frien behind?? And ya know...I see you trying to hide behind the grotto as we jump off the waterfall. So many places to hide. hahaha...

Choc- Good for you...and let's make a plan. Every time you feel temped, lets have a water slide run. OK?

Hello everybody!

Wood, Mauima, Choc, Kay, Snow - so nice to be back here and "hear" your familiar voices in the posts.

Looks like some new great faces as well that I need to catch up with.

Seems as if everyone is holding the outdoor/fitness flag high!

Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to catching up.

Baby is 5 weeks old and we have a bit of a rhythm going, of course the first rule of babies is change!

Roofers are here today, so the worry of roof leaks will soon be behind us and the exterior is one step closer to my "vision" with changing the shingles from brown to grey.

First time back on the bike trainer yesterday in 10 months! I was so happy to be back on my old friend. Otherwise, walking and yoga have made the bulk of my exercise lately. The weather has been beautiful though, so Olivia is already well-indoctrinated to the outdoors!

It may be midday, but it feels a bit like fall here, so I am heading over to the hot tub - anyone care to join?

Cheers,

Kelly

This is my second attempt at posting this morning. Not one of my brighter starts to the day!

Tay - I hear you on the sitting still too long. I love the travel, but after a couple of hours in the car, I need to move! Got in too late last night for the hike and swim. How about today?

Yesterday was a great exercise day: 3.5 mile run in the morning with Luv; a couple of hours of trimming hedges with a hand shears in the afternoon; and biking with the Sunset Scramblers in the evening! Felt great!

I couldn't believe, Choc, how much that pool was like the one we created here on the deck. Now we have a clear visual to refer to!

If any of you did not check out that link I put on about our pool here it is again: http://biggeekdad.com/2014/08/ultimate-poo

Hello y'all!

Hubster and I did NOT perish in a fiery car crash while driving from Calgary to Halifax and back. We actually had a GREAT time. However, I've become FAR too accustomed to sitting still.

Who wants to join me for a hike then a swim?

Uhhh, Maui? Do you think LA in this case is Los Angeles or Louisiana? This time it's the state. Oops! Abbreviations can sometimes be misleading! We'll be right near the Texas border.

Kay - Sounds like a grand adventure to me! I love rides that turn into an adventure. (of anything else that turns into an adventure for that matter.)

So if I understand this correctly Maui, your bed was riding a high wave? You're right. Science is fun!

Yep, Choc, I'm in!!!! Should be a perfect night!

Snow - Timing is such a difficult thing to get down.

To the creek!

Kay... WOW! that was some bike adventure ! (And here I am whining about a. "Wobbly 1st ride" (on a paved bike path no less!!!) I definitely need LOTS of practice before I can try any "real trails" (you are now my official inspiration!) planning on another bike outing Wed with my sis and a friend... Hopefully I can keep up with them!

Maui... Took your advice... I'm on "day 3" (not that I'm counting) of no diet soda (or any soda for that matter) ... Right now I'm sipping on Organic Lemonade duluted half & half with carbonated water (still gotta have "the fizz" to trick myself into giving up that Diet Coke!)....
emoticon

Just got done watering my outdoor plants... Would have done it earlier but had to wait for a doe and her two fawns to finish grazing in my front yard, ... Didn't want to interrupt their din-din LOL

How about a midnight swim in the creek? We can float around and watch the fireflies and stars glittering up above us... Who's in???

Just keep swimming!

Wow, I'm away a couple of days and things get all shaken up around here! Gotta love the OP news central, this is the first I've heard of this quake! Sounds like most of the damage was in wine?

Choc, great going on the bike ride, keep riding, it'll all come back, I'm sure!

Wood, sounds like you timed the rain perfectly with the long arm quilting machine pick-up! How was the run?

Brenda, great that you will have a reason to get out, motivation is a tricky thing, gotta take it where you can find it!

Mary, I'm still picking tomatoes....hope the squirrels have moved on to the neighbor's apples, since bunches of those have fallen on the ground anyway. They left for Germany again yesterday, but said I should go pick more while they're away. I just might do that.

Maui, the bike ride was really hard, then really lovely, we got lost, and then sent back on track by a retired couple that were out fishing, then it was almost impossible for a while (I was having trouble just walking my bike down the hills, they were so steep, rocky, sandy, washed out, windy and scary all at the same time!) Larry almost fell on a rattlesnake....luckily he missed it! We had arranged a ride back to our car from a local pack outfitter, and were an hour late for the pick-up. Luckily we were in cell-phone range, so Larry could let them know why we were taking so long! In all I think it was about 9 and a half hours. That beer back at camp never tasted so good!

I'll be back at work tomorrow, and glad to be home!

Morning Deckies!

Wood- Worry not...about the earthquake reports...interestingly, this is exactly how it can happen. Its all about the 'waves' and how they move, what kind of slip is happening, how deep...lots of variables. Back in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, locally the damage was different in places, street by street. One street topped homes, next street nothing. If your home was located on the high or low of the wave as it 'hit' your street lots of movement, but if the wave was midway as it hit your home, neutral experience.
Science is fun stuff. My very heavy king size bed, she was a rocking! LOL...

Nomads in LA. Very cool. Weather could be fabulous that time of year. :)

Brenda- Very exciting news. I know, you have always loved being outside, in nature/parks...such a centering, breathable place eh? Another step toward some so meaningful for you. Good for you! Enjoy! We look forward to the report. :)
Lost wine...almost criminal eh?

Wood and Brenda- clear skies here too! Beautiful morning.

Mary- I too am working on some garden transitioning. Wish I knew more rain was actually going to materialize. I am having a hard time keeping things alive here...:(. Love arugula...
I bet fall garden can be very productive in your area. Very cool. Almost year round possibilities yes?

Choc- Yay...on the bike! Good for you. Wibbly Wobbly...what great training for stabilizing your knee. Probably VERY good for them as long as you pace yourself! Woohoo!
This week, I am trying to get my bottom bike ready and transitioned...lol. Life can be challenging in so many ways eh? (For those new...cancer and other surgeries too, trying to get the body back on board) Just takes awhile some time...and adaptation to baby steps.
So, Choc- you continue to inspire. Thank you!

Kay- Speaking of bikes! How was the ride??????

OK...Lots to get done. One last tree to trim, mowing and composting too. Yesterday I started a new crock full of Kimchi. :) Today is a transition day. All good.
So, off to water and get started.

Happy DAy all...
See you later, I'll probably be ready for the hot tub.

Good Morning Everyone,

Glad our folks in CA are OK. Scary stuff-thinking about my trip almost 6 years ago (wow) to see Maui and all those lovely bottles of wine now broken out there.

Like Wood, weather is wonderful here. We had our bonfire on Friday night with friends and it's just been lovely weather here. Even the light rain on Saturday was a joy. Hubs and I attended the Cigar Box Guitar Festival and it was so neat. I love that kind of music.

I start my master naturalist course on Tuesday-I'm ready to get pumped up and have some assignments that require I get outside and get moving. Nothing like a requirement to get me motivated!

Starting small to end small.

Choc, I'm pouring! Coffee that is! Beautiful morning - blue sky, sunshine and chilly. Glor and I sat out last night around a fire in the pit. Perfect with a hint of fall in the air but the treefrogs and crickets were at their best! Love this time of year. Actually I think I say that for all 4 seasons! LOL! I think it's great that you got back on the bike! Do it again today!

Mary - Pulled just about everything up in my garden as well. Still have some sad looking tomatoes, kale and all varieties of peppers are still doing well. We'll be freezing corn either today or tomorrow. But the garden season is just about over.

Interesting that things were shaking at Maui's but not at Snow's. Not sure which one I should be concerned about?

We signed up for another NOMADS project for the month of March. This time we'll be working for a kids' camp in LA. Another adventure to look forward to!

Time for breakfast and then got to run. Literally! I need the exercise!

Life is good!

Maui .... WOW! I'm glad you all are safe and sound after the earthquake!!!! I was wondering if it was close to you when they showed it on the news this morning! That had to be really scary....

Just got home from my first bike ride in over 3 years! (That long with no bike first due to my year with cancer, followed by the next 2 years getting knee replacement surgeries... Yup, I'm making excuses for being off the bike that long, LOL) ... Ride was good, but I'm really. "Out of practice.... Wobble wobble, LOL... (Maybe I need training wheels!) knees are a bit sore now, but had fun and looking forward to doing another ride "ASAP")

Good afternoon deckies!

Wow the deck has been a happening place the last few days!

Maui and Aster - how wonderful that you had a visit - and cherry pie with local cherries! Yum!
Thanks for the cantaloupe Maui - you're right it was amazing!

Snow and Maui I am so glad you weren't affected by the quake.

Wood how wonderful that Luv has a creative hobby she enjoys so much and a hubbie who gets joy from procuring and assembling machines with her!

Kay keep up the good fight against those squirrels and have a wonderful bike ride!

Choc - sorry that I missed the swim in the creek - but I might actually enjoy the hot tub tonight! Finally have a pleasant day here - overcast and mid 80s - downright chilly compared to brutal heat we had for almost a week!

Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday! I'm heading out to pull up some pooped out tomatoes and replace them with lettuce, arugula, basil and pea seedlings I've started over the last couple of weeks. Excited about my first fall garden!

Pura Vida!

Mary

Good Morning deckies, well Im happy all is calm here, watching the quake damage on the news as is everyone else Im sure, We didn't feel a thing, the dogs and birds slept, feeling nothing obviously.... interesting that you felt it Maui! I see they put it back to a 6.0... but all the wine bottles they have lost will bring tears to the eyes of all you wine lovers for sure!
Biggest quake we've had in 25 years so I'm hoping it released some steam from the Loma Prieta and San Andreas faults My parents live right smack dab on top of the San Andreas one.

There is a pro football and baseball game going on today as well as a race car event, so the freeways are probably going to be a nightmare today... Im staying home, relaxing and thinking about updating our earthquake prep and supplies for the rest of the year- making a Costco run in on the agenda tomorrow!

Glad you had a great trip Maui, its funny I senced the Aster visit in my head somehow, its kind of strange that I made the connection and then found out my intuition was right! Glad you are home safe and sound, more trail stories - hopefully we can hike again soon!!

Im heading out to start my day now, hello Choc, Kay, Brenda, Wood, and all of you special outdoor lovers!!

Morning Deckies!

Well...I was awakened by the 6.1 earthquake at 3:30Am.
I first thought hubby was having quite a dream cause my bed was rocking and rolling. When I started hearing the house noise and creaking, I realized it was a quake. OK...we are 80 miles from the epicenter.

All good hear, but the USGS did re-evaluate from a 6.0 to 6.1, once they started assessing the wine bottle damage. LOL...

Wood- Impulsive behavior...it's happened...you know it. How are your yellow jacket wounds?? You know when I was 2, I disturbed a ground nest and was hopitalized from hundreds of stings. It's been a 'consideration' by docs for my autoimmune disease, due to histamine reaction overload. Anyhow, hope you are feeling much better. Super Luv has her new machine ready to go.
Yes, yes...more rain for you. ;)

Choc and Wood, it's toasty here already, heading up to 90 again. The creek sounds like a good plan. Just home from a trip to the farmers' market for organic Jersey cheese, and cabbage for more fermenting.

Aster- They had Organic Dairy Cheese curds!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello!!!!! :)
You get those beans in the freezer???

OK...I'll check back during next break.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Long arm quilter is in it's new home and all set up! What a day! It rained (buckets full) almost all the way down to Northern Virginia. Stopped just before we got to our destination. Took us maybe an hour to disassemble the sewing machine and frame and to pack it into the SUV. Then rained again all the way back to Pennsylvania (big buckets!) Got home and it stopped raining while we unloaded the machine here! Ate supper, had a glass (or 2) of wine and then spent the rest of the evening reassembling it down in Glor's long arm quilting room (AKA the basement). Now it's ready to go! The fact that Gloria calls herself Luvsquilting is extremely appropriate because she not only makes extremely creative beautiful quilts; she makes a lot of them! For us, this is a good investment!

BTW - It isn't just impulsive buying that I enjoy. It's the impulsive behavior that I enjoy in many of my family and especially in a few of my friends!

Hey who's up for a morning swim down at the creek?

Life is good!

Got any prosciutto to go with that melon? I love that combo...

Wood, that's great that you enjoy LUV's impulse buys! I've been known to impulse shop, usually on Amazon lately, they make it so easy....

We're packing up, I'm a bit on the fatigued side this morning, did not get a great night's sleep, and feeling a little "massage flu" I think this morning, probably means I'll feel better soon, at least I hope so!

Haha...me too, Impulsivity, deck meetups, never disappoint.

Wood- safe journey today. Luv is a lucky woman...quilting space place...nice.

Today I brought garden cantaloupe to share. This is the most flavorful you may ever taste. Yep , straight out of my garden.
Enjoy.

I love Outdoor People Meet ups! Where the virtual becomes the real! Maybe some cases that would be surreal! LOL! Had a few wonderful experiences myself and hope to have a few more in the future!

Making an unplanned road trip to Virginia today! Glor, also known here as LuvQuilting made an impulsive buy of another long arm quilting sewing machine. So now we drive to Virginia to pick it up. Life is good! (and I love impulsive behavior)

Be back tonight to fill you in. Save me a spot in the hot tub!

Oh, how fun, a Maui/Aster deck meet-up! I bet you guys cooked up a storm!

I have one tomato plant that seems to be pretty much done, but the rest are hanging in there in spite of the squirrels. I've been getting some almost every day, and did enjoy a couple with my lunch.

Wood, sorry to hear about the yellowjackets! That sounds painful!

Mary, your creek sounds cool, at least when there is water in it....dolphins too!

Choc, glad you got out!

My new trainer told me last night he's cutting back so now I have to decide if I go meet him at his other gym (more of a cross fit type place) or find another trainer at this gym, or see if I can workout with him in the morning. Decisions, decisions!

The massage was great and painful all at the same time....I'm hoping to defeat some of the knots in my neck. I don't think it will interfere with my bike ride, at least I hope not.

Maui, you're right about the snow, it's gone! Well there was still a bit here and there when we were there in July, but very little. I'll be interested to see if any of that remains.

Yay! The cat is out of the bag. Maui spent a few days at my house and we cooked together. With so much awesome garden produce. Plus I had cherries and apricots from Door County. Beautiful cherry pie!

Maui, sorry to hear your tomatoes are quitting. We're looking at temps near 90 for the next week, so I'm hoping that the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant really ramp it up.

Mary, it's nice to meet you.

Life is good. Good night to all.

Afternoon breaktime for me!

LOL...Hello deckies!

Aster was right, Wood was right...hello to all my good friends.
Aster- Like everyone has said, welcome home. Sharing stories of your farm, your wry wit , stories of food adventure...all very much missed and appreciated. Good to see you here. :)

Wood- Aster was right...bread is out of the oven, dinner planned, garden weeded, watered, deadheaded, compost turned, dr appointment complete, vacuuming and dusting done, laundry all complete. (LOL, we were on a weeks' journey to Chicago to attend the wedding of 1 of my 4H kids, visiting another 4H 'kid', and then a lovely visit to Aster's farm. I cannot say enough how much I loved the visit. ) More on this later.

Mary- triple digit heat...oh my. I bet you could use a dip in the pool and maybe go hang out under the waterfall. Yes?

Choc- Friday Fiesta- yes ideedy! OK...I'll make stuffed Poblano peppers with walnut sauce and home-made corn tortillas. They'll go with Aster's guacamole too! "Rained all night here", hmmm, I think I used to understand what that meant. ;) Your yak trip...yay yay yay! :)

Wood- Ack! Yellowjackets! Awful! Like your attitude though, "comes with the territory". How's your son? did he get stung too? Join Mary and me by the waterfall? That might help those stings.

Kay- Hey...good you are getting the massage before the long bike ride. I'll have to look up the trail. When I was flying to Chicago last week, we went over the High Sierra of course, not a drop of snow cover, never have I seen it like this. We crossed just south of Tahoe, and could see all the way to whitney. Beautiful but scary. The ride will be dry and hot I bet. And, yes...Aster's house is amazing. By dawn, dark, mid day sun, dusk...windows full of light, tile and stone, natures's green, wood, a private valley full of life. Talk about 'Life is Good'!
And a new trainer...new exercises...always a good idea. :)

Snow- yes, you finally meet Aster. :)
I got home late wed night, and yesterday and today spent time out back...gosh, it may be warm and dry, but it sure looks like fall may be coming early. What do you think? I see you re putting out fall 'things' and spent tomatoes away. My tomatoes are maybe quitting early too...weird!

OK...Break is over.
Much to do.

Life is good.
See you all later in the pool.

Friday Fiesta it is!

Kay- Have a wonderful bike trip! emoticon

Choc - I do love salt water and tidal creeks but right now I would love to have a cool fresh water lake nearby! Still having triple digit heat emoticon went for 5k walk at 7:30 am when son left for school but that was not early enough...pure misery on way the home...but I did see some Wood ducks! Fiesta sounds like a great idea to me! emoticon

Wood - I live in a heavenly place most of the year but the dog days can be rough emoticon ! I'm just across the harbor from the Holy City (Charleston, SC). Well-to-do Charlestonians head to the NC mountains after the 4th of July but working girls like me stay and sweat it out. The crooked little creek behind my house takes me to the harbor when the tide is in...when the tide is out there is just a bed of pluff mud with a tiny trickle in the center...not even a mud minnow could get to the harbor! It's a 2 mile paddle (1 mile as the crow flies - that's how crooked the creek is!) so I get 4 miles of paddling in some nights. If I time it right I can enjoy a beautiful sunset and if I'm lucky I there are dolphins swimming at the mouth of the creek!

Sorry to hear about your yellow jacket encounter! I stepped in a hole when I was about 12 years old and will never forget that pain. I'm wincing right now recalling it! Hope the itching stops soon!

Pura Vida! emoticon

Mary

Wood--It's good to be back. Very sorry about your tangle with the yellow jackets. All I can recommend is antihistamines and ice, but you're probably already doing that.

Kay--Yes, we're in the house. We got our occupancy permit toward the end of October, put up our city house for sale in the beginning of November and moved most of our stuff as soon as the realtors had pictures taken. We accepted an offer in less than a week and moved out entirely the first week in December.

Choc--I love the idea of a lake open to wildlife but closed to the public most of the year. What a precious opportunity to go there some time in a 2 month span.

I'll bring the guacamole to the Friday Fiesta.

Wood... Nope, I was yakking on the lake where I saw the eagle and its nest last year (been there twice this month...nest is still there but didn't see the eagles... May be too late in the summer ... This lake is a wildlife reserve and only open to Public use July and August)... Anyway, today I'm thinking of heading to the Lakes that you, Luv and I had our "picnic on the hill"... Kind of waiting to see if the weather is going to clear up or not (rained all night here and still looks "iffy ")

Yellow jackets! Yikes! I'd be in the hospital if that had happened to me... Big time allergy to bee stings (usually carry an epi pen on my outings "just in case")

Mary... If you kayak tidal areas that's awesome... I used to take trips to Florida Keys and loved kayaking through the mangroves and coastal shorelines... So much to see in those shallow waters!

Snow... Thought of you yesterday ... Had three hummingbirds buzzing around my feeders (haven't had as many hummers as usual this summer so was fun to watch them)

Lots of new members here & lots of "returnees" ... I think this calls for a "Friday Fiesta" (ole!!!)

Nope. Didn't get cut off. Didn't even post. Remember sometime back when I was getting repetitive posts? Well it looks like it started to do that to me again and ran out of energy or memory! LOL! Better than the post just disappearing into the cosmos!

Enjoy the long bike ride Kay! No doubt in my mind that you're up for it!

Mary, I think I should know the answer to this, but I just don't remember. Where are you located? Apparently your kayaking river is tidal and your weather is hot, but I have no idea where you're at.

Wish I would have been with you on the kayaks Choc! Were you on one of the lakes where you took us? Swans there? We're getting some of your storms but the bad ones are missing us so far. Barely.

Aster - I'm thrilled to see you back! You've probably already been told how much I miss your energy and your farm adventures here on the deck! Glad to see you haven't slowed down one bit!

Just so you newer members know, Aster and her husband are the kind of people who don't just dream about what they want; they go out and make those dreams happen!

Speaking of active and dreams; good morning Snow! I don't play "Words With Friends" on my phone either. Can't stand that tiny work area, I play on my tablet where there's enough screen to see what the words actually are! To me, it's a fun addition to the "communication alternatives".

Maui - I know you're out there!

Wednesday evening I was helping my older son load some of my seasoned firewood onto his truck as payment for helping me cut up some new trees. It was almost dark. Got into a yellow jacket nest and couldn't see the little #^&*@#s as they were stinging me. Got quite a few stings on my right arm and on my face. Painful then. Now the itch is driving me crazy!

Comes with the territory.

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

I've got Monday off, so we're headed back to the Bishop area to get in a really looooong bike ride Larry's been eyeing. Coyote ridge. Hope I'm up to it! And that we can figure out a way to do it without a car spot.

Nice that you were able to get in that kayak, Choc! I think you have your priorities in order! emoticon

Mary, hope you cool down soon, enjoy the waterfall!

Wood, did you get cut off? Seems like your last post ended rather abruptly....

I have a massage scheduled for tomorrow, I really need it, I've developed a crick in my neck that I can't explain...it just popped up yesterday afternoon at work, and I didn't do anything to it!

Yay for you Choc! emoticon I am quite jealous!

All this kayak chat makes me want to get in mine so badly! Tides are perfect this week for paddling after work in the creek behind my house. But alas emoticon , it's just too darn hot emoticon ...heat index 110...hottest day of the year (for the second day in a row, sure hope it's not even hotter tomorrow)...

I just keep telling myself that fall will come eventually... emoticon

Aster it's nice to meet you!

Wood, sorry, I don't play words with friends either

Hope all of you enjoyed some fun outdoor time today!

I'm heading to the waterfall again tonight to try to cool off!

Hey Brenda, nice job on the walking! If you want some in depth info (blogs) on habit building check out James Clear, he has some really nice stuff.

Aster, great to see you back on deck! A professional photographer for the new home, sounds great! I do recall seeing pics on FB when you were building, it looked pretty spectacular. So you must be all moved in? Hope that kayak gets some water time soon!

I'll be meeting with my new trainer again tonight, it's been really fun so far, only a half hour, but packed full of new stuff. I expect a good workout tonight as well.

Hi Snow, Depends on which kayak. My nice fragile flatwater boat gets to stay in the garage. The plastic/polylink/plastic boat for bumpier paddling is perched on a dusty pile of hay. We need to make it past this weekend with a company picnic and prepping for the builder to take professional pictures of our house and Labor Day weekend when we go to Iowa for a super fun party our friends throw every year. I should probably start biking to work from our condo too. A few nights a week, we stay in the city. I've just never investigated my route from here since we sold our old house and moved. I suspect Maui will return to the Deck from the kitchen once she's tended to the garden and pops a loaf of bread into the oven.

Aster... emoticon great to see you back on the deck!!!! My kayak hasn't hit the water much this summer either,...seems like every time I planned to go "yakking" we either had rain storms or high winds (today included)... Hoping to get out more in the next few weeks, and also hope to squeeze in a backpacking trip sometime this Fall (will be a last minute, "the weather looks good that week" kind of trip.... The older I get the more I try to avoid backpacking & camping in cold, nasty rainy weather... Can we all say "whimp?" LOL) was actually planning to go this week but we've had heavy rainstorms almost every day with more predicted through the weekend into next week... So I'm aiming for a Fall trip now :-)

Greetings Deck Friends! After a very long absence, I'm here making an appearance for the first time in a few years. Many changes for me in the last few years. I read this thread going back about a week. I have been focused on good food for many reasons, weight loss a bit less, but I should probably get back at it. I don't know how to count my exercise these days because on a day like today it entailed much hauling around of hundreds of feet of hose up and down hills to get the trees watered that we planted this year. I had a great helper who is also great company today though. Believe it or not, I only managed to go kayaking once last year and haven't been out yet this year. That's making me a little crazy, but with the new house, small orchard and ridiculous garden, it's hard to get away. My husband and I hopeto get out kayaking after school starts on one of the nice days of late fall/early summer. Kayaks aren't meant to sit in a barn collecting dust for such a long time. Good to get a little catchup reading done, Wood, Choc, Kay, Brenda and Maui...apologies if I'm missing anyone else. Snow, I know of you, but your time and my time here didn't overlap much. Cheers to all. Glass of wine, but probably no hot tub unless it cools down a little tonight.

I am going crazy hearing about all this "weather... rain, thunder, emoticon downpours..... cats, dogs.... I sort of remember what that was... back in the days! Send some our way please! Most we have going on is some clouds and fog this morning coming from the coast, Its a bit chilly this morning accompanies by some wind. But pretty much going to be in the 80's for the next couple of weeks.... still summer!

Wood, I have a lot of clients who profess to love "Words with Friends"... I don't even bother with apps anymore, use my phone as a phone and a camera and that's about it. Im no techie !

emoticon Have a nice work day today, looking forward to Zumba then spinning tonite. Yesterday I finished yard stuff and moved things around, put nearly spent tomatoes out of sight and new autumn table cloths on all the tables, freshening things for the next couple of months. My hubby loved what I did and he wanted to spend most of the evening enjoying the flowers, twinkle lights, and new patio arranging I did... he almost forgot to pack his bags for this mornings flight to So Cal. Im back home after early airport run, watering the lawn quickly, and enjoying the peace and quiet.

How is your day going Brenda? emoticon Try to get that walk in for me, and take that notebook with you to track... another thing to remember, I know! But soon all this mindfulness will be matter of fact, and then you can increase your quest to a healthy lifestyle a little at a time, easy does it.... but do challenge yourself. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's NOT a train!

emoticon Have a great day everyone, did we lose Maui in the kitchen somewhere?? I hope she didn't topple in to the compost bin! Im off like a herd of turtles, busy Wednesday!

Wood... I've been in the same up and down "trap" for a couple months now... Very frustrating!!!!

We had big storms here yesterday ... Heavy downpours, wind and local flooding warnings ... Supposed to get more rain right through the weekend (at least I don't have to water the flower gardens... Always a plus)

Hope to get out kayaking today before the next batch of rain hits this afternoon...

Have a great day everyone! :-)

Up 3 pounds, down 3 pounds, up 3 pounds, down 3 pounds - if I was moving that marker on a regular basis (which I'm not), that's what you would see. Today we're on the upper end of that 3 pounds again and that's not good considering it's Wednesday. Usually during the week, I get loads of exercise and I avoid the drink (except here on the deck) and snack stuff and I drop to the lower end of my tidal cycle. Then comes the weekends with social events and I'm back up again. It's going to be a tough day again today to get my exercise in. This morning I have an aorta screening (routine) and this evening a birthday party for my 10 yo gd and my 39 yo son. Accompanied by good food of course.

Yesterday I drove in to get Mom to join us for the birthday extravaganza. Oh yeah! Took my 10 y.o. for her first softball pitching lesson yesterday morning! She did great! Lot's of potential there!

Well gotta go get ready for today's screening!

Have a great day everyone!

Great job walking last night Brenda! emoticon You are well on your way to succeeding at your first goal! emoticon

Kay I had a waterfall here last night...I heard some distant thunder and was putting a thundershirt on my little dog, Harry...well the thunder Harry and I heard was distant but there was a cell right on top of our house that exploded and the proverbial bottom completely dropped out of the sky...we're talking emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon ...of course my thoughts raced to my baby plants I had just put in the real world on Sunday...so I ran out in the deluge (and the accompanying electricity) and moved 3 50 lb pots to my deck under eaves where they would have some protection...needless to say I was drenched...but happy because it was the first time in 3 weeks that I have been outdoors and cool! And my plants survived! Did you really walk to work in 90 degree weather? I am so impressed!

Hope everyone has had a great start to your week!

Pura Vida! emoticon

Thanks Snow, Mary, and Kay!

I agree that I need to get moving. My muscles need it as well as my mind. Being outside has been the best way for me to heal. I took a mile walk last night, and even though my muscles were still sore from yoga, it felt awesome. I feel like I should do some classes at the rec center, but I really am not a fan of group exercise. They do, however, have a Bodyflow class that interests me. I may give that a try a few times to see how I like it.

Kay-I like your suggestions of building habits versus willpower. Willpower for me is doing is ALL AT ONCE which never seems to work. I think my goal right now is to be active 3x a week. That's a good habit to build...

Thanks all for the encouragement!

Brenda, nice to see you POP by the deck! That yoga sounds great...I love doing yoga outdoors, just give it a fresh feel.

I agree with Snow and Mary, and I've been reading a lot about willpower vs habits, I think if you focus on building new habits as opposed to trying to gut it out by willpower you will be more successful in the long run, although it might feel like its taking a long time! Anyway the blog I just read suggested making the habit you want to start very easy, meaning if you are trying to increase the amount of veggies you eat (for example) you would add one per day to start, and then you can slowly increase over time until you get to where you want to be. You could do the same with exercise, start with an easy goal, say walking up and down the block every night after dinner, and build from there once that habit is set.

emoticon Brenda!

I don't think we've met but you are clearly a true outdoor person! emoticon That course sounds amazing!

I completely agree with Snow...baby steps emoticon ...maybe set a couple of small, doable goals each week then take one day at a time...it helps me to text my weekly goals to a friend to make me more accountable...post your goals here if you like and we'll be your accountability buddies! And Snow is also right about moving...in my weight loss phase my number one way to burn calories was walking...long hikes are great but sneaking in 5 or 10 minutes whenever you can really adds up!

And yoga on the beach! emoticon Truly awesome...you are off to a great start!

Pura vida!

Good Morning Everyone,

I just returned from a trip to Cape May NJ - my first visit there and a lovely time we had. On Saturday my husband, stepdaughter and her husband signed up for Yoga on the beach. It was absolutely wonderful and I am still feeling it today! Hubby and his daughter have been doing yoga together every Saturday morning and it's been wonderful to see their progress and a great way for them to spend time together now that she's grown.

I hate coming on here when I'm feeling down, but that's why we are here, right? To support one another. Somehow I'm at the highest weight I've ever been. And I'm sort of astounded. I haven't been eating great, but I've been active and I wonder what the the heck is going on. So I'm going to focus, work on eating in addition to remaining active. And I would just love you guys to check in with me every now and then because I need support. I know I need to do this of my own will, but knowing you deckers are cheering me on helps a whole heckuva lot.

Besides that, I'm pretty excited about a course I'm taking this fall-it's to be come a PA Master Naturalist. I'm excited about how often this will get me outside and getting to explore new places in PA and learn all about our local ecosystem!

I hope you're well well and trekking forward.

Starting small to end small.

Hey Mary! Any time you want to hang at the waterfall is a good time! We've been getting that heat the past few days as well, I've been hand watering some of my new plants, and some of the thirstier ones as well! And picked a few more tomatoes. I haven't heard of that book or the author, but do subscribe to the notion that "food is medicine" in the sense that it can provide nourishment that is healing if we make good choices most of the time. I do also subscribe to the notion that too much deprivation leads to bad behavior, so better to have a little of what your are craving than deprive yourself and binge on it later. It's all about balance.

Wood, glad you had a nice dancing/camping weekend! I bet you and LUV were a sight on the trail on the tandem! Sounds like so much fun!

I'm all ready to walk to work today, I don't think I'll get rained on, looking at the weather, but then I've been surprised before! It is supposed to get into the 90's though.

I found a giant hornworm on one of my tomato plants yesterday, he's been dispached, but sure wish he was the last! This one was the biggest one yet!
