evening deckies-
I think I am gonna stay in the pool tonight. Hot day, hot night, lotsa chores...great day really, but now I need the pool.
I think I'll grab some of the pink floaties, and drift on over to the waterfall and listen to the soothing water falling. Of course, I snuck into the wine cellar first (for those who were wondering.)

Choc- Glad your lawn was dry enough to mow. And yes...it counts as exercise. Yep, close encounters are special. I have a bird feeder right outside my kitchen window. And with all the time I spend in there, I really get quality time with my hummers. Yesterday, a friend and I hooped in the car to drive to the coast. The ocean temps typically here in northern California, will forever keep me out of the water...COLD! But yesterday the ocean was 8 degrees warmer than normal, a record high temp. This brought anchovies into the bay and the whales followed,. we walked, strolling kinda, for miles, heading south, whale watching, feet in the sand, chatting away. Wow...nice. Sad part is...we shouldn't be seeing whales this time of year. must be part of this whole global warming. But it was a perfect day.

Tay- Ahhh...road trip. Yep, sitting can be rough! But time with hubby, chatting and gazing at the scenery as it passes by...love it. Do you sing in the car??? hehehe...we do. :) Any pasks on the itinerary?

Wood- good to chat today, sorry I was in such a rush to that appoitment! Sheesh...crazy day. So, hows the back after a day of rest? You did rest right? And like you, I too love the generational games. Uno- hehe...you know I can play that one. Bass look out is right! Tradition eh? Nice how you go back every year. Are the grandkids going with you? any waterskiing on the list? You sure have the toys to take along, that's for sure.
Thanks for checking in with me, I'll try and give you a proper chat tomorrow.

Like I said , the waterfall is calling.
Anyone up late, can join .me. The water is perfect. :)

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Tay... Right u are! If I've gotta do chores at least I can enjoy the ones that take me outside... Heading out to mow the lawn right now (usually an hour's worth of walking behind the lawn mower... Counts as exercise, right?)

Wood, this place is heaven. Nothing better than a morning hot-tub, and a good afternoon outdoors. Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm sure you'll see me around lots!

Choc: Good luck with those chores. At least yard chores allow you to be outside... right? Right??

I'm going climbing in Wasootch (Kananaskis) on the weekend. I wanna get it all in now, as I'm about to embark on a two-week cross-country roadtrip with the husband. Lotsa sittin'. Not a lotta doin'.

Have a great day all!

Wood... Oh yeah, pour that cup of coffee! Beautiful morning here as well... Bright blue sky, sunny and 52 degrees! I love mornings like this! (Just came back inside from the hot tub!)

Maui... So cool about the hawk! Love it when we get a chance for a close encounter with nature's critters! Great news about your son too! Woo Hoo!!!!!

Welcome to all the new deckies!

Lots of house & yard chores "calling my name" (I'm trying hard to ignore the call, LOL) ... Hope to get out for a short hike some time this morning... Been too long since I've hit the trails... Taking care of my sister's Bernese Mt Dog this week and next so maybe will take her along for the walk....Then house cleaning and yard work will probably be the afternoon agenda

Have a great day everyone!

Storms have once again passed through and today promises to be a beautiful day: cooler, breezy and with a lot less humidity!

Went to a progressive UNO night last night where the players ranged in age from 4 to 80. I love events that put adults and kids on an equal level. Healthy for all of us!

Lots of good news at your end Maui!!! I can see why you're so excited! I'll be around most of the day if you want share more of whats going on!

SDL - I can see where alcohol and walking the wire may be hazardous to one's .....well just about hazardous to one's everything!!!! However wounds heal quickly on the deck. It seems to me that things are just about exciting at your end as they are at Maui's! Lots of change! Lots of excitement! Life is good!

TAY - "What goes on here?" is a really loaded question on "The Deck". Basically we're a bunch of "real" outdoor fanatics that hang about on our virtual "Deck". Here we share our adventures, our bucket lists, our silliness, our accomplishments as well as our frustrations. Most importantly of all, we share ourselves and we become good friends who support each other and who laugh a lot! You'll find "The Deck" has just about everything you can imagine: a hot tub, an Olympic size swimming poot with a waterfall, a climbing wall, firepit, Rose garden, treehouse, volleyball court, a very well stocked wine cellar, a nearby stream with a swimming hole and rope swing, and just about anything you can imagine! Some of "The Deckies" have been with me for over 8 years, but we're always open to new people who love the outdoors and love fun. It's a place where the real world and the imagination come together. As one of my friends put it, here we become a "virtual reality". Welcome to "The Deck".

If any of the rest of you want to add to that description, please feel free to do so.

So the deck has a new baby, "Olivia Rose"!!!! Now just how cool is that!!!! Congratulations KPO!

Choc - You ready for that 3rd cup of coffee? I'll pour! Real pleasant early morning hot tub this morning with the temps in the 60's and that Canadian breeze coming through the mountains.

Speaking of Canada. Almost ready for my next excursion there! Look out bass!

Luv is heading to a quilt show with her buddies today. I was supposed to be working on a trail cleanup with the local hiking club, but, alas, playing with a sore back right now and decided that playing with a chainsaw on the mountainside just might not be the best thing to do. I'll stick with lighter exercise today!

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Life is good!

Happy Hump Day evening all,
Gosh, I have been away too long to catch up.

Dan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very good to see you stop by. You would have loved what I made for supper! Though of you and here you are! Please let us know how you have been!
And yes...

K-Po has a beautiful baby girl, born July 20. :)

Tay- welcome! Glad to have you stop by and join the deck! How do you know Dan?

Wood- so sorry about those garden pests! All that rain has not helped I am sure. We get powdery mildew on our squash when its too wet. My garden has been keeping me busy busy. I think by Friday the peaches and plums will all be done...whew.

SD- POD and moving...that'll keep you busy.Such an exciting time really. New home. I have not moved in a really long time, not sure how I would do it. But I do think about it from time time. Not sure where I would go though. Hehe...Wood remembers everything... LOL.

Kay- you off on another adventure?

Choc- hey you, with all the water you have had, are the lakes for yaking the best ever???

C_ So what's this week's crop? My cukes and green beans are going crazy. I have been making fermented pickles by the crock and now have some green beans fermenting. This wild fermentation is new for me. Do you ferment? Can? Freeze? or everything?

I though of my deck friends this morning. I have redwood tripods, lashed together, when I grown my cantaloupes and cukes. Atop one tripod this morning was a huge hawk, sitting and turning his head, scanning my garden. At fist I thought he might be an owl. I am not sure what he is hunting, gophers, lizards...not sure.Wish I could have gotten a picture, but I didn't want to run for my camera and miss watching him. After he flew off he landed on the nearby telephone pole and the hummers from my yard, flew up by him, circled and darted at him, trying to scar him off. It was quite a show. Wood, you had your Heron visiting...very cool.

My other news is my son is moving back near me on Saturday. He has taken a job at a solar research company, Solar Junction. Very cool. Great job, hoping to help the planet, and he and his fiancee are now close by, 12 minutes away. This Mama is happy!

Life is good!
Hugs all

Ah, yes, yes! Wood, why must you bring that up. I have some scrapes in some places that you don't wanna know about! Haha. It was fun, nonetheless. You all are a bunch of trouble-makers!

It's been a little fast-paced over here. I've worked a couple extra shifts (I need the money!) and am still over here packing and cleaning! I've got a POD arriving tomorrow that I'll have packed by Monday afternoon and then I turn the keys in on Wed. Crashing with the BFF Thu-Sun and then unloading the POD at my new place the following Monday! Just a week and a half - almost there!

I hope everyone is enjoying their week! Happy Wednesday!

Good morning OP!

Dan? Dan?? I sort of remember a Dan that used to hang around here!! LOL! Welcome back Buddy!

Choc, when I get sloppy with my eating/drinking, it's almost always because one of 2 reasons: 1) social events (including family events) and 2) the emotional trigger! Why is it that as soon as things get us down or just out of sorts we immediately turn to the fattening stuff to "make us feel better"? Sad part is that it usually does not really make me feel better. I just beat myself up for putting on weight! You'll get back on the wagon again.

As I'm sitting here typing but still looking out my window, I have a beautiful great blue heron sitting in the top of a tree preening himself. He's an old guy with a really long beard. I see them all the time along my stream when I'm fishing, but have never had one sit where I can see it from my porthole to my local natural world.

Mary - I think you'll find the rock wall on both sides of the waterfall great climbing! If you need pointers on the climbing we have our resident expert, Kay, who I'm sure will be happy to help you out. If you want to repel down the rock face, I might be able to help. Of course, if you're just looking for advice on building muscle, Snow as well as Kay, would be the one's to see. Most of my strength training comes from my major outdoor activities; wood cutting and wood splitting. (which you're welcome to help with!)

Speaking of which, Snow, you haven't been hanging out at the woodshed while I split wood for a long time!

Maui - My vegetable garden looks worse than ever. Bugs in the squash and the tomatoes have some sort of blight! UGH! Not my year for the garden! Glad yours is doing much better.

SDL - Haven't seen you since you were consuming enough alcohol to perform the dance on the high wire! Hope you didn't get injured! Good week at camp?

Speaking of camp, guess Charity is in the backwoods with 100 teens! Yikes! Now that sounds like a challenge!

C_ - Killing zuchs by touching them when they're wet? Didn't know that, but it may be just one more reason my garden looks so bad this year! I'll have to check that out!

Well, no grandkids today but a lot to do before my next Canada trip in a few days! Time to get to work!

Life is good!

Just popping in to say hi... Been kind of "AWOL" from the deck this week... Just "life" craziness keeping me away (nothing serious) ... Hoping things will settle down by the end of the week... I definitely need to get "back to work" on my diet and exercise goals (again "life craziness" ...and my own lack of Will power/emotional eating to blame for sabotaging those goals ... Not an excuse, so I need to "snap out of" this funky mood ASAP!)

Hope everyone is having a great week... Will try to read back through the posts I've missed later to catch up....

Good morning all!

Paddling was delayed and shortened by rumbles of thunder so I didn't make it all the way to the harbor but did spend about an hour on the creek - very peaceful and relaxing - except when I passed a bunch of rowdy 10 year olds in the creek having a pluff mud battle! Life is good in the lowcountry!

Kay - Hope your travels are going great!

Wood - glad you had a great weekend! Enjoy those gks!

I'm attempting to add some muscle to my arms - wish me luck - strength training is not my forte! Maybe we can build a climbing wall at the deck! Or better yet - are there any good rock climbing spots near the waterfall?

Pura Vida! emoticon

Well once again I thought I posted from my tablet from the campground and once again there's nothing here! Don't know what the story is!

We had a great weekend! - country dancing, hiking, biking, adult water gun battle and a crawfish catching contest! Top it off, I went fishing last night and caught a bunch of smallmouth bass and a huge catfish! Life is good!

Today and tomorrow, we're gk sitting. 2 today. 4 tomorrow.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Welcome back Pam.

The car is almost packed...just waiting for some rice to cook, and we'll be out of here.

It's been cloudy all morning, and we got some sprinkles earlier, but the forecast is for thundershowers today (30% chance) and clear the rest of the week, so hoping that holds up!

If I don't get to sneak on deck for the rest of the week, have a great one!

Just a little for me but my kayak is calling my name for tomorrow...

Have a great trip Kay! Pam I'm a newbie so not sure we've met but try not to work so hard that you don't get to the deck! (I work too hard in my opinion but am lucky that work is less than 2 miles from home.)

Tequila, peaches, ladderball, zumba, whatever your heart desires, it's all here!

We're headed out of town as well....made it to Cabela's, my first time there. I got a little camp table that was a hit, and a soft sided cooler that was a miss....so Larry will bring that back, and maybe pick up the reclining camp chair to replace the one that broke. I don't think we'll be able to bring it on this trip, but it is a comfy chair.

I've picked 3 more tomatoes from my garden! Had 3 for lunch yesterday (they are Early Girl, so pretty small). YUMMY!

Yeah Kay, I LOVE the activity here on the deck lately! Lots of great outdoor people doing great things.

I am really enjoying all the youth stuff going on. Kids into the woods of Alaska, summer camps, Bible school, games with your teenage kids.

Also like all the diversity of activities among ourselves: stranding vans on rocks, gardening, hiking, biking, tennis. It's been busy, busy BUSY!

....and of course, what is it that I like best? Seeing the return of the silly play here on "The Deck". Ladderball challenges, pink floaties, zumba on the high wire and a return to the swimming hole down at the creek. Let the imaginations run!

Yep Maui - new toys are great! Ah heck! So are the old ones! I just like toys!

Good luck with the combo week Mary! Get out there and enjoy kicking some serious butt!

Off to a weekend of country dancing and campfires! Don't know if I'll have WiFi or not. So in the meantime, have a great weekend everyone!

Life is good!

Oh, man, it's been too long since I've peeked in on deck, and it's all full of games, tightropes, zumba dancing and tequila?

It's been a crazy week...I've been walking in all week, and Larry's friend is here from Boston. So lots to do...and no time to Spark! But I was able to switch my days off, so now I can head down with them when they do their Sierra adventure, instead of just meeting up for a few days. Weird weather we've been having lately, thunderstorms, strange skies, lightening last night...

Nice to see everyone out and enjoying so much summer thought!

Snow, it will certainly be hilarious I'd I lose and have to Zumba on a tight rope. I don't think I've mentioned it on here but I am NOT the best dancer! Lol ill just have to step up my game!

Charity, your trip with the teens sounds awesome! I'm a camp counselor, myself. On any given day I have between 15-30 kids in k-8. We play games, swim, and do art/science/cooking projects every week. It's loads of fun but draining some days. I got home today after 4 solid days and just wanted a beer and my couch.

Wood, idk how you do it. You are just always moving and shaking! Your family is fortunate to have such an active and positive person in their lives.

Well, time to eat dinner! I need my energy for this game of ladderball with Snow. But more than that, I need some alcohol in me so I can actually perform this Zumba dance when I inevitably lose! Haha. Let the games begin!

Been crazy busy lately because Summer Camp starts Monday. We're taking 100 teens to the Alaskan backwoods and i have a ton to do! But thought I'd stop in and say a quick "hi"

Wood - Yes, we managed to get the van out of the woods and The Hubs swears he will never do that again. We shall see. Seems like I've heard that before, but this time was a doozey so maybe...

Took a teen hiking yesterday and have another scheduled today. For the first time ever I had the thought that maybe I'm too old for youth work. How long can I keep up with these kids? LOL! Motivates me to keep at the weight loss and fitness. Gotta travel light when moving at this speed...

Gotta run! I'm in charge of stage design at camp and we're doing a vintage train station theme. Got to create some antique looking railroad signs before today's hike. See ya later!

With all the big talk from Wood I thought I better bring my tennis team to the deck...we don't take it easy on anybody! Picture is us celebrating just after winning combo state championship last October...o.k. it wasn't very high level tennis (6.5 which means a 3.5 partners with a 3.0) and it was 40+ age group...but still it's a great memory...sadly life, kids, work & injuries prevented us from continuing our dream at sectionals in January and many of us have been bumped up by the USTA to the next level so this combo season will be at 7.5 instead of 6.5...but what a great group! you can see we are the bad news bears of the tennis world...we were probably the only team at state without coordinating outfits!

Match was rained out last night ): but I did a cardio dance DVD then when the rain subsided took little Harry on a 2 mile walk...going to do some yoga now (outside on the deck!) then get ready for work...

Enjoy your macarenas, hikes, runs, hummingbirds, grandchildren and busy days!

Good morning OP!

Fast and furious day here as well! First of all, we'll be "sitting" two of our grandkids today while Mom (FUNSHAM) is at a training session. They'll be here in about a half hour. GD wants to see if she can run 3 miles with me. That should be fun! Also gotta service our tandem bike, pack for our camp/dance weekend, and mow the yards. Oh yeah and then it's our last night of Bible school as well. Should be a great day!

Snow - It was funny watching that little Macarena thing! However, I do hope you win this time. Having Malia Zumba on her aerial rope should be quite interesting as well!

Maui - Don't let Snow talk you into anything foolish on that hike today! I'd love to listen in to that conversation the two of you must have while hiking! I can only imagine! ...and the pink floaties?....just remember what happens here on the deck stays on the deck! I wouldn't want any of those pics to get out to my hunting buddies!

Got to get ready for the kids! Have a great day everyone!

Live! Love! Laugh!!!!

I cant believe that when Malia beats me at ladder ball.... I have to dance the Macarena while barking like a seal!! Good grief, if it wasn't for the tequila shots before hand, I would have been too embarrassed! But now Im going to challenge her to a little Zumba contest and see if she is up to "shaking the girls" while doing some fast tricky footwork ..... did I say she has to do that while walking that aerial rope? Hmmmmmmm ..... interesting idea.

Wood- I didn't get lost, just found a trunk full or your baby pictures emoticon and fell asleep with a bunch of them in my hand.... pink flowers in your hair even back then.... hmmmmm Maui, who knew??!!

Gym class in the am, meeting Maui for a hike after that - and to work by 1.... fast and furious morning.... you know she and I will be talking up a storm while taking in the outdoors.....

Bed is calling, running on a sleep deficit this week... time to catch up....hello to everyone and be safe and sleep tight emoticon ***SNOW*** emoticon

Worried...well...not me! hahaha...this Ladderball is especially fun after a couple drinks.
Mary, don't worry, Wood is seriously competitive, but what fun! This way we all play our best. And let me tell you, we 'girls' are just as competitive...lol.
Fun fun!

Wood- Glad to hear you are enjoying that new bike! New toys are great!

SD- hehehe...bark like a seal, that would be funny...your game night sounds quite fun!

Oh...and Wood, I am not sure I'd agree with 'everyone wants to make Wood look bad'...lol...why else would we prop you up with pink floaties in the hot tub when you are tired?

Okay Mary but I hope you're up to the challenge! I take my game playing pretty serious! Especially with this group here. You'll find that everyone wants to make Wood look bad and when someone does I have trouble living it down. Sodon't expect me to be easy on you just becase you're new! Bet I have you worried now don't I?

Great new pic SD! I like to change my profile pic often to remind me how lucky I am to have many things in my life that make me smile...so take a good look at my happy little shihteranian, Harry, with his precious stick...I will probably be bringing someone or something new to the deck the next time I visit! 5s sounds like a blast! Games with kids are the best!

These days my 15yo and his friends are into Texas hold em...I love it when the games are at our house...they crack me and each other up...my husband usually joins the game...I usually just listen and laugh and provide snacks!

hey Wood...sorry I missed ladderball last night! Yesterday was one of those days that involved 3 hours of driving time chauffeuring my son...last activity (basketball game) didn't end until 8...was too pooped to party by the time I fed us all...I'll stop by tonight after my tennis match for a quick game (you might want to practice up, I've got a feeling I'm going to be a natural, heehee)...combo league cranks up this week...love, love, love the girl I'm playing with tonight - so much fun!

Enjoy the day!

Mary

I'm going to have to look up this ladderball game. Never heard of it! I learned a game tonight called 5's and the winner gets to make the loser do something silly. I lost twice and the 11 year old that won both times made me lay on the ground and bark like a seal the first time, and the 2nd time I had to dance the macarena, lol. What a fun dinner party with some great people. Even made a few connections for possible jobs!

Wood, I love that you're enjoying that bike so much. Makes me excited to buy mine next month. I'm going to talk to a friend who is an avid rider this weekend since I know nothing about bikes.

Well, the evening is winding down and the turtles are harassing me for some play time, so off I go!

SDL - Love the new profile pic! Shows the whole world your spirit of adventure! You're awesome! ...and exciting news on the new place! I think we should all come over for a housewarming party!

Snow - Where are you? You said you'd be in the treehouse tonight, but I can't find you. Hiding?

Mary - Cornhole is popular here as well. As a matter of fact, it has probably taken over first position for favorite picnic game away from ladder ball. We have both and enjoy them equally. In fact, I challenge you (or anyone else who's game) for a game of ladder ball tonight on the deck.

Charity a heck of a day for sure!!!! So did you get the van off the rock yet? I pulled a similar stunt last year, but with my boat up in Canada. Put it on a rock that I even knew was there but got careless. Could not get it off because I had to pull the motor up so I wouldn't damage it! Needed help to get off. One of my more embarrassing moments on the water.

Pouring down rain here again tonight! So far no severe storms although they're predicted. At least they waited until we got home. Been a busy week again. This time a lot of our time has been taken up because we volunteered to help out at Bible school. I'm the recreation director (of course, they're all rowdy games and the kids I have loved it.) and Gloria is the craft leader (quilts of course). Did manage to get a good ride in this afternoon on my new bike. Loving the new approach to exercise!

Okay, now that game of ladderball.
Life is good!

All the sunburns look to be bronzing nicely. There might be a little peeling on my shoulders but nothing extreme. The kids are no longer in pain, which is nice.

Got word today that I can move into my place within the first couple days of August! Guess the tenants just needed a fire under their bums to find a new one. When I said I'd move in a few days later than its availability date, I was told that since there will be time, if I buy the paint, my friends/landlords will pay a professional painter! Totally rad! So now a trip to home depot is in order. :-)

Today is a social day. Caught up with my cohort from grad school and am going to a dinner party this evening. Getting ready to head out for some live jazz as an appetizer.

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Snow, enjoy the treehouse! I think I'll hang out with the turtles under the waterfall tonight.

emoticon Its not really a sunny morning, but I am feeling sunny! The hummers are madly dashing around and enjoying some hanging flower baskets surrounding the feeder.... they seem to approve of my front patio rearranging emoticon Im getting to know one of the little females better, she is so curious about me! I think I may be able to touch her in a week or two if Im lucky, maybe stroke her back when she naps on the Japanese Maple.

Running to the gym, but just one class because I have some heavy lifting to do in the yard work department today, I want to be able to move for the evening spin and zumba classes !
Have a great day everyone.... Im going to be up in the tree house this evening ....little telescoping.... emoticon .***SNOW***

Good afternoon all!

Beautiful but hot here...taking a lunch break at work right now...no basketball activities for ds after work today so I will have some "me time" to get outside emoticon

Kay I hope your toenails and garden are growing! I don't play singles much anymore but I remember on my birthday 9 years ago I played a 4 hour singles match on hard courts and had to have a podiatrist drill holes in both big toenails 2 days later...so disgusting...that was in April and I spent that summer wearing bandaids where my big toenails should have been when I had on flip-flops or sandals...worst part was it was a league make-up match and I was the only one on the team playing that day and was supposed to meet my teammates after my match so they could treat me to a birthday lunch...but by the time I got there they had already eaten and had to go back to work or pick up their kids! (p.s. I won the match so that eased my toe pain and the disappointment of missing lunch!)

SD - I hope your little lobsters' skin has cooled and bronzed!

Snow - I have never played ladderball but I'm going to get a set and take it to the next outdoor party I attend! Corn hole is the big party game around here but I hang with a competitive bunch so they will love a new game! WOW - competitive surfing in Hawaii!!! That is amazing - you had to have a core of steel not to mention arms and legs! I can't imagine be able to do that - even just out of high school...what a great skill set you have in storage if you ever want to dust it off!!!!

Wood - so glad you had an amazing hike with like-minded buddies!

Charity - oh my gosh! Crazy day indeed! Sounds like you ended up getting even more exercise than your original plan! So glad you're safe! What about your van - have you rescued it yet?

Enjoy your day!

Mary

Wood - you are blessed to find likeminded folks!

We had a crazy day today. I intended to bike about 13 miles to local Butte and hike it. But The Husband caught up with me in the van, hiked the Butte with me and then wanted to check out a backwoods trail. In the van. Sigh.

We got high-centered way in the heck no where. Had to leave the van and hike out about 6 miles on very rough trail.I had thrown my bike in the van and had to carry it out (my road bike, no way it could handle that terrain). We had to cross a glacial stream and then when we finally found a road, I had to get on my bike and back to where I had left the car and then come back and pick up DH.

We are sooooo lucky it wasn't winter!

emoticon We had a great time celebrating Maui's special birthday (sexy sixties?)
Like my little card said, happy 29th!! Yeh, girls outshined the boys Im afraid...and the biggest surprise to me was playing "ladder ball" and getting the first two tries on the ladder!! I hope that one flower that took a hit is recovering and continuing to bloom.... I doubt the rose bush was affected by all the misses....so much fun and smiles.

My hair smells like the burning wood of that gorgeous fire this morning.... we didn't get to see the fully rising special moon as the ocean fog rolled in through our bay and altho we felt a bit slighted by that, we did see it hiding behind the trees, lighting up our party grounds. It seemed it never really got dark last night at all.

Welcome to the deck Mary!! Oh my- we have a newbie that is going to fit right in like she has always been here, I can tell! Woo hoo to the newcomers and I am so glad to see people resurfacing again and checking in!

I hate toe nail injuries too Kay, why cant they turn pink emoticon or rainbow instead of black!?? emoticon I guess you will be happy when the darned thing falls off.

Hi Choc hon, how is your garden growing? Everytie I see or hear the word Kyak, I think of you..... that is on my bucket list for sure. I just want to try a gentle lake first, not the open ocean! Kauai tempted me last time, but oceans was too rough and choppy for my liking, I think I'll go to a nearby lake sometime and just learn the basics. I was quite the surfer girl in my youth however, (post high school) living in Hawaii for a year, got into competing on an amateur circuit, loved it. Returning to Calif. cold oceans and having to wear a wet suit.... nah, not for me so much.

Ok the day is going by so fast!! I have to go resuce my yard, Im sure things are drooping and I have some new plants to pot as well as some rearranging of my tomatoes and the dalias ! Have a great day ,like Maui said this morning, you are all such special, fun, caring, interesting active friends.... what did I do before she invited me to that first Happy Hour??
I will see everyone later on I hope to hear about your weekends!!

emoticon ***SNOW*** emoticon P.S. emoticon Hi Wood!!!

WoooooooooHoooooooooooo!!!!!! It is a gorgeous Sunday here in San Diego. I slept in, lounged on the couch, then went out to look at a place to live in August. FOUND IT! The one I referenced in my blog. My friends (future landlords) are a little concerned that the current tenants won't be out by their lease end but I told them I can just camp in the front yard until they leave. Nothing new to me! Haha.

Getting ready to go grocery shopping for the next couple weeks and then I think a nap is in order. Total lazy Sunday up in this household. We had planned to go to the pool but the kids look like a bunch of lobsters after yesterday's day at the beach. I was sure to spf them every hour but I guess I underestimated their whiteness. Lol They all have great tanning genes though so they'll all be bronze by next weekend.

Sounds like everyone really enjoyed their evening last night! I know I definitely took advantage of the pool here on deck. The cool water felt great on my sun-soaked skin. :-)

Welcome to the deck, Mary! I'd love to try surfing, I suppose it's on my mental bucket list...but we are mountain people (my boyfriend and I) so not much opportunity for surfing!

Maui, glad you had a nice day! Sounds like a lot of fun, and I think with you and Snow on the same team (and I imagine Leilani as well?) of course you won! I still have my toenail, as black as it is....last time it just finally came off after about 3/4 of it had grown back in, that seems to be how my toe nails work, so I suppose that will happen this time too.

On the gardening front, this morning I noticed I have 4 tomatoes that are turning red, so I'll be watching those! And my basil is looking nice, and I even have some green onions that look like they may keep growing!

Greetings from South Carolina!

I found this team when I searched Sparkteams for surfing. I just returned from a vacation where at 52 years old I took my first surfing lessons (with my 15 year old son)! Had a blast! It was the best upper body workout I've ever done.

I love kayaking, tennis, walking, running, gardening and happy hour!

Reading through some of your posts here I can see that you are an amazing group. I'll try to join you deckies often!

Happy belated birthday Maui! emoticon

Hope you all enjoy your Sunday! Raining here emoticon - garden loves the rain!

If there's no lightning when I leave work (where obviously I'm not working very hard!) I may go paddling and/or running.

Good Morning Deckies!

Thank you! Thank you for all teh birthday wishes, greeting, party, food, wine and company.

The Moon and fire, skinny dipping and all, were quite fun. Summer on the deck with good friends makes life quite special. I appreciate each and every one of you. Adventure seeking, fun
Loving, very real friends who I love dearly. Thank you.

Here in my other world, a party was had here at my home...food, games, wine , campfire and great friends under the super moon before the clouds rolled in. Snow was here with her hubby !!!!!!!!!!!!! Games were 'girls vs boys' hehehehehe...yep...girls won. We grilled rosemary salmon and the rest was from my garden.

Aging- Wood- I have to agree with the article...I love where I am today. HAppy Sunshine girl, doing what I love, with people who matter to me. Now being in the 60's club is quite special...I am in very good company with you , Luv, Choc .

This week I was quite busy of course with my yard production, but also got a hike in with miss Snow, first one in a long while. My knee held up OK! Yay...

Charity- Hello! Sorry for any delay in meeting, when the fruit trees are ready, I get swamped! I live out west, in the bay area south of SF. I have converted much of my back yard to garden and am having a real good time as an urban farmer myself! Welcome to the deck family! And...like Kay said...take it easy on your back today. (I have some back stories myself)

SD- hey you...soooo...welcome back! What the next step for you??? Hows the knee??? Any-adventures on deck??

Kay- squirrels...fuzzy rats., vermin ... you know how I feel about them in my food. We are quite overcast this AM...keeping it cool...yay. Say, how are the toes these days??? Did you lose the nail?

C-D- Don't you just love , heading out to see what the garden grew...over night? I found some zukes and cukes this week... they were hiding..and OMG...huge...lol.

Again thank you my good friends. Yesterday was a celebration to remember. Hmmm...now where are my clothes??? Good thing I have this new birthday snorkel water blue beach towel. Love the colors. You all know me well. I am hungry. What's for Sunday brunch???

Life is very good.

Caught a glimpse of that moon as well, it was beautiful! I'm surprised you needed the bike lights!

We went to a French Club for Bastille day (which is actually tomorrow). It was in Minden, which is a bit south of Reno and Carson City, nice place, crazy garden these folks have, full of day lilies, which I love! But also kind of maze like, and full of surprises around every corner.

Since I got the bulk of my chores done yesterday, I can relax a bit today, just need to put together a crockpot dish, so I can put some more lunches in the freezer.

Shhhhhhh! Let her sleep. She is getting older and needs more sleep after a binge than she used to.

Last night's moonlight ride was nice. 44 riders. Sort of cool seeing all those bike lights out on the bike trail late at night. That super moon was beautiful!

This morning going on a group hike along the Susquehanna River. Should be done before the severe storms enter the area once again.

Have a great Sunday, all.

Life is good!

Yep Super Moon tonight. Supposed to look much larger than the average full moon. Therefore you're right. Unrelated to Snow's skinny dipping.
Maiden bike ride was super. Loved it!
Tonight Glor and I are joining our sunset scramblers for "Moonlight Ride". Back to the tandem.
We'll be back before midnigh so I'll be here for Maui's party. Save me some of my brandy.

emoticon Maui! Time to emoticon for sure! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon We'll make sure we break out the good stuff in the back of the cellar tonight! And I think there is a special moon out tonight as well (completely unrelated to Snow's skinnydipping!)

Wood, congrats on the new bike! emoticon Hope you have a great break in ride! But don't break anything, OK?

SDL, I have some plants in containers (otherwise the squirrels would eat them all) so you could start with those for your urban garden if you don't have yard space. Herbs are a good place to start, I keep getting those basil plants, and they will last weeks until you have eaten them all (depending on how much basil you consume)

Charity, hope the back heals quickly! Having been sidelined recently with a wrist sprain, I feel your pain!

C, how long have you had your garden? I've been talking urban gardening classes these past few weeks in anticipation of moving into a nice little spot where I can grow. I'm really excited! What all do you grow?

Charity, I hope your back feels better. Yes, probably good to take it easy today. You're brave to mountain bike! I have a friend who does and is constantly injuring himself or his bike. Makes me nervous. Lol

I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Maui, but Happy Birthday! I hope your day is as special as the comments here make it clear you are!

Wood - I haven't tried a cyclocross bike yet! I'm intrigued by them. I have a Trek Alpha with carbon forks and that thing is so light and fast that I feel like a passenger on it. The only thing i don't like about road bikes is the lack of disc brakes. But I believe the cyclocross bikes have disc brakes? I'll be curious to see what you think of your road bike. But I'm betting you will love it!

Woke up to something wonky in my back. I knew I was gonna take a beating on yesterday's downhill mtn bike ride but I was thinking I'd feel it in my knees. So will play this out and see what I can do today. Might be a good day for a swim...

Happy Birthday to Miss Maui! Such a good site friend to all and motivator ( our Grand Poobah of Positive Thinking)! Sweetness and light!

Wood- Good luck getting out on the bike again with a comfy seat. Makes all the difference in the world to not have to sit on the business end of a baseball bat! Thing I love most about my recumb. bike is that chair like seat.

Gardening notes- worms are eating my Brussels sprout plants, and I am hand gleaning them which is rather disgusting. Anything to avoid sprays though in my pseudo organic plot. Tomatoes are bountiful and delicious. Goldfinches are eating sunflowers or bugs not sure which. And the surprise of the week is if you touch a zucchini plant while it is wet it kills the plant (or so I have been told).

River is flooding so no boating this weekend. Humidity is about 99% so that would have been nice. Only one month and school starts up again- must be nuts for keeping at it for another year, but always get this mentality about this time of year.

Celebrate your weekends!

Snow! So good to see you again! I missed you! And Maui, my return was perfectly timed it seems. Woohoo! Happy birthday! I most certainly will not be missing the shindig tonight.

Wood, I'm looking at buying a road bike as well, mostly for errands and such, as everything I need is right around the corner but the corner is just barely too far to walk, lol. I've never tried cycling before so I'll let you know how it works out over the next couple months.

Have a great day, deckies, and I'll see you tonight!

Wood... I'm right there in the same age group as you... Feel ok about myself considering all the health issues and surgeries I've gone through (although I'm not real happy bout my weight, but that just means I'll keep working on reaching that goal!)

I just had my mountain bike "professionally" tuned up... Haven't ridden it for over 3 or 4 years, first because of my bad knees (pre-surgery) and then because of knee replacements past 2 years... So I'm hoping this summer I'll be able to get back on it and do some riding on the back roads (heading out to REI store this morning to buy the softest, most "cushy" bike seat I can find cause I remember how hard my old seat was! (You'd think with my extra weight there'd be plenty of "natural padding" for that problem, LOL)

Count me in on a party for Maui's birthday tonight here on the deck!

Just keep swimming!

Hey, just read this on the Huffington Post and it seemed appropriate for today! Supposedly according to a survey of 80,000 people, the group that is happiest about their appearance is the over 65 group!!!! Over 2/3 people in that group are satisfied with the way they look! Maybe that's because we don't remember how we looked at 30? LOL! I'm feeling pretty good about myself at the moment! The rest of you need a few years yet!

OMG! It's Maui's birthday? How did I not know that? Maui, I'm so sorry! For those of you who have not been on "The Deck" forever, Maui was one of the original Outdoor People. I think she was one of the first 6 to sign up for this team! She even took over for me as team administrator when I took a sabbatical from social networking! Now she's been co-leader and a very close friend of mine ever since! So party? Yeah!!!! One of the deck parties like we used to have with everyone showing up and getting rowdy. Pool games, dancing, maybe even skinny dipping down at the creek followed by an all-night bonfire! (for you new people, we not only have the deck which is equipped with a hot tub, pool, and fire pit; we also have a creek with a swimming hole with a rope swing that drops you into deep cold clear water!) Yeah, I know it's a weekend and often weekends are a little shy on people here, but let's see how many we can get together! Late night birthday party!!!!! Be there!

SDL - Nice tan lines!!!!! I know suntans are not supposed to be very healthy for us, but I still think they look great! I'm one of those people who get really dark really fast so even though I practically bathe in 50+ sunscreen, I still look like I don't use any. Then again, I pretty much live outdoors! Love your job working with kids!

Charity - I'm going to pick up my new bike in about 2 hours. My first road bike ever! I've been on mountain bikes forever and 2 years ago Glor and I got a tandem that we put a lot of miles on, but I figured for my 65th year I was due for yet another new experience! So I bought a new Trek Cyclacross! First ride this afternoon!

Now let's get ready for this party!

Life is good!

Loving all the activities everyone's partaking in! I got a couple hours of pool time in at work today. Spent 45 minutes doing laps with up to 7 kids hanging on me, so I figure that was a workout. Lol Tomorrow is a beach day. Gotta be sure to wear sunscreen though. Even with multiple applications today I still got some solid tan lines on me. The racoon eyes are in full effect! Haha!

Didn't rain the whole day and I got in an awesome downhill mtn bike ride off the back of Hatcher's Pass, from the 3800+summit! Will share more later or blog it, but since it was a gravity-driven ride I didn't really hit my calorie burn and am off to the gym!

It "rained" on my walk home, I believe I was struck by 3 whole rain drops! emoticon OK, maybe four...

Wood, you know me, and the new trainer is a pusher, so I ended up with a deadlift PR last night! At first I thought that bar would not budge, but he encouraged me to try, gave me some tips on breathing and core control, and I did it! But I am conscious of the wrist and what I can and can't do with it, so if something hurts I back off.

Well Larry's called dinner so I have to go eat!

Love seeing all the new faces on deck, and the returning ones as well! emoticon

Wood - Winter is something I'm still figuring out. I have a difficult time staying warm when outdoors due to thyroid disease and haven't quite figured out how to dress properly. So...I am not as active outside and tend to reluctantly turn to the gym. I do snowshoe and am learning to cross-country ski. Most Alaskans snow machine and we have one, but I"m just not big on machines. I am considering getting a Fat Biek so I can cycle during the winter but will have to figure out how to dress right.

Got wet again last evening! This seems to be the year that storms come up quickly and catch me. This time we were at my granddaughters softball game. I was surprised it took so long to call the game because the sky was really black and the field was a couple of hundred yards from the parking lot and there was lightning. They waited until it poured. Keeps life interesting!

Another birthday party here tonight for my tribe. This time my grandson turns 9. Going to be another pool noodle hockey game!!!! You'll probably be able to hear us from where you are. LOL

Charity, taking the Gold Mint Trail hike sounds like the perfect reward for all of that hard work. Enjoy it! What do you do when winter sets in?

SDL - what a great way to work! Letting the inner child out is something that we all need to do but don't do enough! Not too long ago I told a friend of mine that we were acting like kids and she simply replied that "we are the kids we were". I really liked that thought and have now passed it on to all of you!

Changinghorses - Thanks for taking the time from your busy schedule to stop by "The Deck". Our schedules do get crazy don't they? And most of the time I love it! (Most of the time.) When is your marathon? None in the future for me. 5k's this fall, maybe, but nothing bigger.

Maui - I take it that your plum tree is really producing work for you right now! And I know you love it as well! I'm way overdue to check in with you. Soon.

Choc - Saw your forecast looks perfect for hiking or yakking. Hope you get out there.

Snow - Hope you're taking the time away from all your workouts to get some work in on maintaining that tan! I find it's a hard to fit everything in, but hey, it's worth it! Life is good! Any more hummingbird babies?

Kay - Things went okay with the new trainer this time? ....and the wrist is recovering? You're another one that has no idea how to slow down! ...and that is one of the reasons we love you so!

Have a great day everyone! Not sure I'll get back before late night hot tub time!

Life is good!

Running by waving to everyone! Been crazy busy and not online as much right now. I am training for my first marathon and the finish does come without the work.
I hope you are all enjoying the summer and the view from the deck! Take care!

Sounds like you deserve it, Charity! Enjoy!

I went into "work" today. In quotes because I get paid to play with kids outside, so more fun than work. The splash wars (5 against 1) and swimming away from alligators for 45 minutes wore me out! Got home and crashed, now up again for dinner. More of the same tomorrow!

8 hours later..I have finished the big grant and intend to take tomm off. I have a major headache and am looking forward to the husband's grilled dinner, a hot bubble bath and then NOT engaging my brain for the rest of the evening. I am taking the whole day off tomm and am debating doing the Gold Mint Trail up at Hatcher's Pass.

Hey Cadmonkey! Checked out your sparkpage and saw your daughter as Maria. Isn't that an amazing thing watching your kid as the star in musical!? My son had the lead in several. The most amazing was when he was Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof. I was so proud I could have burst. That was quite a few years ago. Now he is just as amazing as a principal. Theymake us proud!

Charity you'll find your humor fits right in here!

SD! It has been ages but I see you've been very busy. Life I always an adventure my friend.

Glor and I started the day with a long ride on the tandem. Beautiful day!

I'll be back!

I had an awesome workout yesterday at the pool. I did some mellow laps and then took a water aerobics class with some friends. Capped the day with taking the dog for a walk around the neighborhood. It was such a pretty day.

Wood - I taught at a very stuffy private Christian school and they did not always appreciate my (rather inappropriate) sense of humor. I'm a bit of a brat.

I did not get to have any fun yesterday and am rather grumpy about it today. I have a massive grant due tomm and have been pretty chained to the laptop. Heading into our youth drop-in center in just a few minutes to wrap it up and help with some case management overload they've got going on.

I did manage to squeeze in a work-out at the club. Stationary bike and treadmill. It seems a crime to me for physical activity to be boring but sometimes it's just about hitting your calorie burn for the day.

I "think" we are going dip-netting for Copper River salmon this weekend and there is some awesome mtn biking in that area. Keeping my fingers crossed that we can make this happen (dependent on some of The Husband's obligations)

Good morning OP! Looks like a beautiful day to be outside!

Kay - I don't know if the sangria helped the wrist or not, but you sure didn't seem bothered by it last night. I think that was the silliest I've ever seen you get with a few wines in you. Hope you feel okay this morning!

Enjoy the day everyone!

My wrist could use a hot tub, and maybe a sangria too....not sure how that will help my wrist, but it can't hurt, right? emoticon

We got a T-storm passing through yesterday (of course, since I had walked in!). I got soaked on the way from work to the gym (all of a half a block walk), and it was only sprinkling when I was done with my workout. So far the wrist has done OK, I've had to modify a couple of exercises, but the wrist wraps do help.

Maui, not sure what elbow you're talking about. Now that's not a good sign, when I can't remember my injuries anymore! I now have both wrists sore now, since the right one was the one that started hurting back in March from the lifting, and this is the left one.

My tomatoes are still all green, but I keep checking them! And my basil seeds have made 4 nice basil plants, they are doing really well for how old those seeds were!

Wood... We got REALLY heavy rain and a few "strong gusts " of wind, but nothing like what your area got hit with! Hope the storms there didn't cause too much damage! (We need to send some of our rain to Maui in California!!!

Nice and cool here today (mid 70's) and supposed to be sunny and cool like this through Friday ... This is my favorite kind of weather! Did some chores today so hopefully I can get out kayaking tomorrow ... There's a lake near here that usually has an active eagle nest (the lake is closed to the public during early Spring but opens in July, so I'm going to try "yakking" there if wind & weather allows... Hoping I'll get to see the eagles :-)

Wood... Count me in on hot tubbing tonight on the deck! :-)

Just keep swimming!

So Choc, How did you make out with yesterday's storms. They got here about 7 last evening and came roaring in with tremendous straight line winds! Just got our power back a short time ago. ....and now it's storms again, but these are mild ones so far.

Nope C_, had no idea you were a reading teacher, but I knew I liked you. I first got my degree in Secondary English, but English teachers were a dime a dozen at that time, but Pennsylvania had just made a requirement that reader teachers had reading specialist certification, so I got enrolled quickly in a graduate reading program and became a reading specialist when we were in great command. Taught reading more years than English and also spent a considerable amount of time as a Reading Coordinator and some time as part-time head teacher. At one time or another, I taught all grades from 6 -12 and 1 year as an adult educator. My wife and I also taught country line dancing. That was a lot more fun!!!!

Luvs2 - Was out looking at road bikes today. Been on a mountain bike for about 25 years now and my wife and I bought a tandem 2 years ago that we ride a lot, but just recently I've had the bug to buy a road bike and join another biking group.

Will probably be back for the late night hot tub.

Enjoy!

Dug up some nice potatoes today with my rooting around pulling weeds. It is like finding treasure, and some will be on the table tonight! Having good luck with zucchinis (of course who doesn't?) and tomatoes are keeping us stocked. Also have some peas for a treat for grand babe. Sunflowers are blooming by the front door with goldfinches taking a few treats now and then. Waiting for eggplants and cucumbers and more signs of life from the green pepper. Deer have not been back, yet.

Nice to have some new and returning folks on the deck! Have to say my experiences with Spritz in Italy were less than stellar. How can something that looks so good taste so utterly horrible? Will be back to mixing up some nice sangria for you all in the evenings ahead!

Heading out for an afternoon bike ride this afternoon as it it not too hot or stormy. Need a visor on my helmet! Expect the ice water to be running down my chin as I had a tooth filled earlier today. Have been totally unproductive in the days since we got home. Hoping to be caught up from the intensity of travel and time confusion soon. Maybe just being lazy!

Wood- You know I am a reading teacher? I blame any typos/grammar chinks on autocorrect.

Today I hope to wrap up a big grant (to fund a mental health treatment program for our drop-in youth center) in time to try a new trail, Twin Peaks Trail out of Eklutna Lake (Alaska). It's a 5 mile round trip, rated moderate to difficult the first section, 5.5 miles one way and 5,000 ft if I wanted to summit (won't have time today but will in the future) It will be in my blog this evening unless the grant-writing doesn't cooperate. It is overcast today so views will be sucky, but oh well..need the exercise and the adventure. Keeping my fingers crossed that just maybe it will clear up...

Hope you all have blessed days and I'll TTYL!

Yes, it's been quite a while since my last visit to this deck of fun. As you read through my blogs, you will see how busy I've been with much physical activity. If I'm not experiencing adventures with family, I'm in the saddle of my Trek pedaling for miles, lost in a solo adventure. Or, I find myself growing my very own "whole foods", experimenting with new veggies and herbs each year. This year you will all be tasting various recipes using zucchini as the key ingredient.

Aside from my paid job and several non-paying jobs, there is not much free time for me as I'm also enrolled in an online course (Nutrition and Physical Activity for Health) with the University of Pittsburgh. So, before I "head off to class", there is much for me to read on this thread in order to get caught up with everyone's comings and goings on the deck.

Keep Sparking!!!

Let me know how the storms were Choc. They're supposed to reach us tonight! Give Sis a Pennsylvania birthday hug for me! I'm still looking forward to the two of you road tripping to our part of the country!

...and Charity, I too was a teacher for 35 years in the inner-city schools where I had the opportunity to teach outdoor skills to street kids! Oh yeah, believe it or not, I was an English/Reading teacher who misplaces modifiers all the time! LOL! (sometimes on purpose)

Maui - Had to hand water here as well. Returned to find everything DRY! However, like Choc said, storms on the way! Gladly teach you how to handle the "Wacky Worm". It's so simple, it's almost stupid, but it worked!

Was out in my hot tub around midnight. The amount of fireflies was amazing!!! Quite the show! Too bad I couldn't share it with some of my buddies on the deck!

I had the pleasure of reading Charity's blogs this morning. If the rest of you haven't been there yet, check them out and get to meet our newest adventurer!

Lot's to do!

Life is good!

Charity... I taught second grade for 33 years... Also retired :-)

Prepping for some big storms here today... Supposed to get high winds and hail so I just took down all my outdoor hanging plants & other potted plants ... All tucked away in the garage

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!
