Mary- Thanks! Yes...I am working hard to make that scale move...haha...it's being stubborn, but I will persevere. And you are so right about teh balance with strength etc and weight-loss. It cannot be all about the # on the scale.

And my eyes...lol...a 'process' and temporary, therefore not worthy of as much attention I may be giving it. But with the 'pressure' of a wedding...you know...needs things to go smoothly...tic toc tic toc.

Oh I can just imagine the boy is hungry. I get hungry...sometime Hangry. So, best feed him!

Here comes Labor Day weekend...wow...without all the produce chores to 'mark' my summer flew by. Wow.

Time for my apron too...garden onion (Spring onions from freezer, garden tomato and eggplant with garden thyme, basil...and a weee bit of pasta, garlic and romano. :)

Choc- With my water carrying, I have saved much of the 'Choc's herb garden'. :)

Kay, how are the changed up 'commute' to work paths going?

OK...off to grab that apron.

Yes Happy September!

Maui - my goodness your eye issues must be so annoying...glad you can find a little humor there anyway! emoticon At least it's something docs have dealt with many times.

emoticon Getting yourself and hubby to the gym! Keep at it I bet you'll see a new low soon! (Hope I do too...still really hard this time...but I've decided to keep pushing the strength and cardio for at least a month no matter what the scale says...I tend to drop the strength to lose weight but that prevents me from getting stronger so it's time to figure this out.)

More pre-wedding plans falling into place - truly fun stuff!

Hope you get the surgery behind you next week!

OK time to put my apron on... emoticon emoticon the boy is home from school and lifting and the boy is hungry!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Pura vida!

Happy September everyone!
Wow...here we are dry as a bone and 8" of rain in 24 hours for Mary!

Mary- Harry is adorable. I can see why he puts a smile on your face...pompom tail and antics to boot! That tropical storm really brought the rain...wow...We may have had that much the entire year here...all in one day in January. LOL...
Haha...stick in hand walking...fun...happy guy.
And your friend has had her last Chemo...Great news!
Sounds like you are reconnecting and seizing those moments.:)

Kay- Hahaha...I can see me doing this too! No shoes! hahaha...Oh my.
Too nab about the smoke though...somehow we have been spared.( I am a little nervous to even say that) But so far, only a couple spare the airs days all year.

So, hubby and I have been going back to the gym, changing things up a bit. And if I go...he'll go...5 miles a day ...so far so good. It has not pushed me over the line to my new low weight for awhile...sheesh...(Maybe its muscle from changing up the routine)

Hmmm...
Mary still working on the trees...my arborist is making a video for the city arborist to watch about why he believes the tree should come down for safety. Bleh...Politics...people abusing power...its so costly to us 'little people'.

Oh another note, I put a deposit for the rehearsal dinner for my son's wedding. It's feeling more real...I have a dress, and Vietnamese Dress, reservations for this and that...fun stuff.
:)

OK...this is a link to the vision imbalance I have and why they have to my other eye. Bleh.
www.ouh.nhs.uk/patient-guide/leaflet
s/
files%5C090427visionimbalance.pdf

I keep doing things like missing my 'mark'. Like...going to hang up the hummingbird food and missing and dropping it. Or ...like this morning when I reached for my coffee, ran into it and spilled it. I NEVER do this...hahaha...this last month has been funny...kinda...

Timing is silly...they might be able to do surgery this next week. Here's hoping so I can be healed before he wedding...hahahaha...no black eyes for pictures, right?

Anyhow, life is good. Still giggling.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Haha, me again, but while I'm checking in I might as well post since I have a few minutes while I take a lunch break...rain continued...almost 8 inches in 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning...tropical storm remnants...but sunny and below normal temps now...lovely!

Wonderful start to my day! An especially enjoyable walk with my best 4-legged friend!
Following those little bouncy ears and that little pom-pom tail always puts a smile on my face emoticon

Harry always seizes the moment…when he comes across a patch of perfect grass – he pounces on it and scratches his back…pure joy!

And when he comes across a stick he takes it to his human…there’s always hope that she’ll throw it for him…I always do – but not until the end of our walk – walking with the stick in my hand assures that he’ll stay close to me!

I hope all you outdoor folks have a chance to go outside and seize some moments today!

Pura Vida!

Quick drive by emoticon

One return done (the easy one)...

quick break to log a food plan for the rest of the day...and check in on deck!

Kay...glad y'all had a fun trip! haha...no shoes...I could absolutely do that...I think it's easier to forget something on short trips...on longer trips I always use a packing list, I really should make that a rule for short trips too! but then again a list wouldn't have helped last year on a weekend trip when I left my entire suitcase at home! luckily I was visiting a town I once lived in so it was easy to do some quick shopping and I picked up a couple or really cute outfits that I still love...at least I've gotten my money's worth from those unexpected purchases!

Very rainy Sunday...I was busy on computer at 6pm when I got a text from my fitness pal...she was going out to do Couch to 5k with her daughter...I hadn't realized there was a break in the rain!...I threw my shoes on and headed out too...felt great and motivated me to do some arm exercises while I cooked dinner...(hubby thinks I'm luny! but every little bit helps)...

Have a great Monday!

Happy Sunday indeed!

I'm a bit sore from Friday's workout with Iain...the hour was brutal! But worth it...I just need some rest now.

The Rock Creek Lodge was nice, a little bit smokey, especially Sunday afternoon when we drove up to Mammoth (had to fill our "growlers" at the Mammoth Brewing Company) it was smokier up there, but didn't affect our breathing at all, just didn't have the Sierra Blue Skies I love. I discovered when we got in on Saturday that although I packed everything I needed to wear to enjoy some nice outdoor activities, I had forgotten to pack shoes! Seriously! Who forgets to pack shoes??? Me! emoticon So Larry and I just laughed for awhile, and he said he was happy that now we were pretty much on equal footing, what with him still on crutches and in a boot! So I borrowed his shoes for my bike ride up to Mosquito flat, then drove him up there and he rode his bike down the road to the end of it. It was a fun activity for the day...

Our only other adventure was taking a road off into the Little Antelope Valley to see an old gold mine. They had closed one of the roads because the road dropped about a foot in one spot, looked like an earthquake fault to me, Larry thinks landslide...there was no sign to say which, so who knows?

Maui, hope the surgery does the trick and you can see again soon!

Mary, hope you get through those taxes and back up, and can get out for some fun!

Happy Sunday afternoon!

More than our fair share of rain here but I won't complain...we actually lost a tree because of the rain...leaves and and roots (and vines) so soaked with rain-water, a windy thunderstorm and down it came...

Maui I know you'll be glad when the eye and tree situations are settled! I'm still working on the taxes...just realized today my automatic internet backups had been "failing" so I had to spend some time on that...I think it's working but only at 3% complete so thought I'd pop over to the spark and the deck for a few minutes...K and I have started our mission - gosh weight loss is hard for me these days...once upon a time I had it figured out!

Friday was a big day for Lynn - her last chemo!!!!!! It was so nice to visit with her for a couple of hours...these next few days are pretty brutal then she'll have a few good weeks before her surgery at the end of the Sept...when she recovers we are going to start walking together regularly...so excited...

Kay and Wood - looking forward to hearing about your trips!

OK back to taxes and backup...

Have a wonderful evening!

Happy Friday Deckies!

I sure hope everyone is ready to celebrate the weekend!

Mary- I must report, the city arborist is giving me a bit of trouble, But I figure this is a process...lol...what ya gonna do? We will see how long this takes. (Believe me I do love trees...we have 19 here...its just 3 have died, one is dying.) Safety first.
BTW- that tomato sandwich was divine...You know me well. The shrimp was excellent too...never had that style before. (Being a west coast gal) Yummy and thank you!
How did you and Kathleen do? weighed in and moving forward??? Its so good to have a buddy. Taxes get done?

I also saw my eye doc today and we have surgery now scheduled for my other eye. Guess they are just not going to cooperate this way, and soon, I'll see better soon. I feel better knowing we have a plan.

Hard to believe we are so close to September!

Wood- we are hearing signs of fall too. This next week we are expecting quite s temp shift. Yay! Ontario...here you come. House boat sounds so fun!

Kay- OK...how what Mammoth?? :)

Choc- thinking about you!

OK...I really really want to lose this next .5 lb...just sayin. Haha...

Signs of fall are starting to sneak into my life on a daily basis. Although my flower beds still have quite a few varieties blooming, they're now loaded with dead heads and seed pods. The nights are dropping down into the 50's! (Great sleeping!) I was surprised at the number of leaves that were in my lawn when I mowed yesterday! A neighbor stopped by yesterday to talk deer hunting. (of course, he already was dressed in camo!) Here in the Northeast we get huge flocks of blackbirds that gather together to migrate - sometimes 1000's at once. My trees were black and alive when I started this post. I wonder if it's time to service my snow blower?

Ahhhh! But wait! Not quite ready for that yet! First, there's a house boat waiting for me on the Rideau Lakes in Southern Ontario. I need to pack.

Life is good!

Good afternoon!

Yeah Maui!...glad you reconnected with some friends! Gosh I was hoping your eyes were cooperating with each other...let us know how things go on Friday! What's your next step with the disagreeable arborist? Wow 3 major surgeries in one year...you really are a trooper! Almost 20 lbs down this year!!! emoticon Very impressive - especially with everything you've been dealing with!

I'm up 6 for the year...Kathleen and I have our first weigh-in tomorrow...her goal is 2 lbs a week for 5 weeks...I'm shooting for 2 lbs the first week...then I'll adjust each week after that...

O.K. Maui I say you sit back, rest your eyes and relax and let the rest of us do the cooking for you today! How about a good old lowcountry summer lunch - tomato sandwiches and pickled shrimp... emoticon emoticon

Enjoy the day everyone!

Good morning Deckies!

Another sunny summer day out here in California! We are lucky so far, not experiencing smoke at all, temps OK...likely 90, but low humidity.

Mary- I took your lead and took time yesterday to contact 2 friends who have drifted, that I have been missing. :) It was great to chat with them.

I am also not posting too much, my eyes are still goofy! Haha...Long story, but it looks like I am heading into a second eye surgery. I'll know more Friday after I see the doc again! Right now my 2 eyes are still not being team players, so they have to come up with a way to fix this. But...my surgical eye is doing great. Looks like eye 2 needs a fix to balance things out.

Mary- Hows the soreness today? Better? Love that you are committing to regular exercise with Kathleen. Fun! Goal weight! I am working on getting there too. I am .5 away from 20lbs down since Jan 1. You know, you missed my big surgery year (Back, knee and cancer) all one year. But I have never gotten back to myself since then...I am trying! Slow and steady, trying to 'go the distance'.

OK...This is all I can do to see a few inches from my monitor.
Happy Wednesday.
Life is Good!

Good morning deckies!

Maui - brunch and shopping with all the girls! What a delightful day for you all!

Thank you for your sweet words. You and everyone on this deck are true blessings to me.

Yesterday I hooked back up with one of my "sisters", Kathleen, and we walked/jogged the bridge...oh my goodness I am sore!...jogging up that incline was brutal and we pushed each other much harder than either would have done on our own! We're going to start texting daily again and exercising together regularly and get ourselves to our goal weights!

Friday I'm going to keep Lynn company for the first 2 hours of her chemo. Her final round! And I think I'll be joined by Allyson (another of my neglected "sisters") whom I texted on Sunday. She called me last night and we talked for an hour. She's been wanting to do something for Lynn but busy and hadn't gotten around to reaching out. Then another "sister", Anne, will stay with Lynn for the afternoon and take her home. So I'll have a chance to catch up with Anne as well!

I encourage you all to do as Maui suggested - make an effort to contact someone you've drifted away from!

Have a terrific day! I had a nice walk this morning but now it's time for work...3 tax returns due Sept 15 - yikes!

Pura Vida!

Mary-
We were dual posting.
My goodness...so good you have reconnected with both of these women/friends. Yes, this modern life, so busy...but getting outside brought you back!
Your story is very touching and a great reminder to all of us.
Maybe this week, this can be our motto...
To make an effort to contact someone we have drifted away from. It happens to us all. Nobody's fault, like you say.
Hugs my friend. You so often write words that warm my heart. I feel the blessing of you.
Thanks for being here on the deck.

Morning Deckies!

Wood- you are sooo right as usual...lol...busy busy weekend!
Love that song! I think I too would have loved Folk song Sunday...love, love, love.
Nice you had such a fun evening with new friends. :)

But, yes, super busy weekend here.
Had a wild Friday for me, with the City Arborist coming by and saying she disagreed with the arborist I hired. (Apparently, she argues with everyone) But, gosh, I wanted a drink after she left. No resolution, no permit to remove tree yet...we will see where this story goes)

Saturday, hubby and I took off early and went for a long hilly hike. It was time to get out...maybe a 8 miler...very nice morning.

Yesterday was super fun. Went out to brunch with Leilani and her girlfriends, then off to shop for her wedding dress! LOL...and she picked one! Fun day. Sweet sweet girls in her wedding 'party'. Super supportive, smart, kind...very very nice. I also met the grooms mother for the first time. Mother and son are sooooooooooooooo similar...lol...we got along fine. Whew!

Today, I took hubby to the gym at 5:30! hahaha...rode recumbent bikes...a first for us...haha...
Good for us!

Kay- how was the weekend?

Mary- still getting in your miles?

Isn't MIss Jaq retuening soon???

Choc- we are sending good vibes!

Kelpie- back to fall schedule soon?

Chula- is it cooler? Get any hikes in this weekend?

Luna- Hows the knee??? Better? Swimming is good though, right?

Reso- Well...you've been missing awhile...last we heard you were trying to catch up...so...do you feel more caught up?? Hope so. But stop by, let us know what you have been up to, right?

Aster- hi there my friend. What a perfect life you are having these last couple weeks. Kayaking, harvesting...life is good.

Brenda- Hi there my friend. More goodies from your garden??

Snow- We miss you. Come play, ok?

OK...my is calling!
I'll check in later...

BTW- I am seeing signs of fall. How about the rest of you???

Happy Monday all!

Wood, Maui and Kay - sounds like you all had wonderful weekends!

Once again the timing of the conversations on deck has coincided with what’s going on in my real life. Friends/chosen family - YES!!!! I am very lucky to have a “real” sister I would choose! I also have many other "chosen" sisters. I started thinking last week about how I don’t see most of them as often as I’d like anymore.

Last Wednesday morning I took a long walk but didn’t take a water bottle with me. Decided to angle my walk toward a neighborhood pool where I could get a drink. Then thought, I’ll walk by a friend’s house, maybe I’ll see her and get some water there. Sure enough my friend, Lynn, was sitting on her porch reading. I walked up and we chatted about our kids. Her oldest son and my son were in school together K5-8th grade and we carpooled K5-4th grade. We were very close back then, had many long talks on her porch when I dropped the kids off. Often when she had a problem I was (just by coincidence) able to help. The best thing I remember doing was matching Lynn up with another friend’s mom who was recently widowed and looking for a family who needed a part-time nanny. It was a perfect match for them all. One birthday Lynn gave me one of the most touching gifts I’ve ever gotten. A little metal garden plaque with an Irish blessing painted on it – “When I count my blessings I count you twice”

When we stopped carpooling 6 years ago I didn’t realize it would mean we wouldn’t see each other at all. But she was busy with 3 kiddos and I had gone from part-time work to full time (plus) and still had my kiddo to take care of so we just drifted apart.

What a shock last week when I asked her how she was doing and she said “pretty good, I have one more round of chemo”. She was diagnosed in April and I had no idea. She had assumed that one of our mutual friends would have told me but I guess they all assumed I knew as well and I really don’t see most of them very often now that son’s at a different school. But I didn’t think I had drifted that far out of the loop! If there’s a bright side it’s that I cheered her up because until she took off her ball cap with the fake pigtails I had no idea that she had lost her hair! She said “Really! You didn’t know? I feel like I look like death.” I could honestly tell her that I when I looked at her I did not see cancer. And she now knows that she can call me to help with transportation or anything else she needs. I will be texting her on a regular basis to make sure she doesn’t forget it! And when she's gotten through the chemo and surgery I'm going to get her out there walking with me!

Then yesterday while walking the creek path I ran into another good friend whom I haven’t seen in months! We had a nice chat and I asked her about a mutual friend – the two of them were inseparable back when their sons were in middle school (in college now). She said she hadn’t spoken to her in forever and didn’t even know if or where her daughter was in college. That was a big surprise because they were so very close but it made me feel better about losing touch with Lynn. Nobody’s fault really - we got busy and it just happened – it doesn’t mean we don’t still care about each other.

Amazing how quickly months turn into years. So this weekend I started reconnecting with a couple of girlfriends I haven’t seen in a couple of months. I’m going walking with one today!

Hope you all have a chance to get outside too!

Pura vida!

Good morning OP!

Apparently, from the lack of activity here on the deck this weekend, it must have been a busy weekend for everyone!

I had two favorite events this weekend. One - our choir takes the summer off from performing on a regular schedule. Since we're not around so much, that actually works for me. However, I do miss the singing! Well one of the members got some of us together to do a special "folk music" program for yesterday's service. You know 60's stuff like "Put Your Hand in the Hand". It may not have been technically our best program but it was a lot of fun and got a lot of people moving and clapping in their seats!!!

Secondly, we got together last evening with some brand new friends for a picnic type meal and games. It was wonderful! Lots of good stories and laughter! To me, one of the best things in life is discovering others with similar life styles and opening up a connection that just may last the rest of our lives. There is nothing more important to me than family and FRIENDS!

That being said, Have a great day my Friends!

Life is good!

Happy Friday friends and family!

Wood- Yes, yes, yes...the whole idea of chosen family is definitely something I embrace. Family comes to us is many ways. Some of you are family to me.
Glad you left the boat ! Such storms. Crazy summer. I suspect we will all remember this one. Nice yor Mom got to have another visit. :)
The tree...yes...a stressor for sure, since real safety is involved and a LOT of money. Hopefully we will just move forward.

Kay- Yes...Friday! And have a great weekend!
We are truly trying to make lemonade from these 'lemons'..currently researching solar.
Yep! Not sure yet about the cost offset...but definitely an option.
I am also looking at native trees...lol...drought tolerant landscaping. My entire front yard, I did not plant (anything major). I have just maintained them for 35 years...Much of these have been here since the 50's. Hard to imagine changing it...but...I will adapt.

We hope to mill out the lower portion of the tree. Hubby would like to have the lumbar to build 'stuff'. Wood, I bet you would too!
Anyhow...
It's Friday, I have a list. This weekend, I am accompanying Leilani off to dress shop for her wedding. Wow...never said that before. Something new for this life. (Wedding not until June 2016)
Should be fun. The Brides maids are coming along too...:)

OK...I am off!
Enjoy!
Get out!

OK...I am off!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Hope you enjoyed the grandkid road trip, Wood, even if you couldn't get the boat in! I bet your mom enjoyed it too!

Maui, that's a bummer about the tree....hope you get the permit, even though it will be sad to see it go, one door closes, another opens though? I'm sure you'll fill up the empty space with something wonderful (and perhaps better able to tolerate the current conditions?

I'm happy it's Friday! We have a corporate visitor today, then I have my PT after work, an hour's worth! Should be a good send-off for the weekend!

Maui, I love the stories about people who come into our lives and somehow become part of our "family". She sounds like a remarkable young lady. Glad you have her.

A permit to cut down a tree that you are no longer allowed by law to keep alive; add to that the possible fines; add to that the expense of the permit; add to that the expense of the professional tree service; and you get the kind of bureaucratic maze that drives me crazy! One of my favorites from a previous community we lived in was the "privilege to work tax"!!!!....which was different to each of us according to the type of work we did!

Went to visit Mom with the grandchildren, but didn't take the boat in. We had severe storm warnings and we decided not to deal with the storing of the boat in that kind of weather. We most definitely got the storms!

Grandson just got up. Think I'll head out to the hot tub with him!

Have a great day everyone!

Morning Deckies!
Wow...I got busy again...lol...it happens and all of a sudden the days have gone by!
I had company here for a few days, lovely visit from one of my adult/friend/4H 'kids'. An amazing girl who I have known most of her life. She has chosen to teach in one of the most challenging/dangerous inner city Chicago gang schools, and teach middle school mostly black boys in special ed. Wow...She grew up here, in a MOST privileged environment, daughter of a prominent surgeon, exclusive education, and VERY blond and white! LOL...
An amazing 'kid', standing tall, accepting challenge, trying to make a difference.
Inspirational. She calls me 'Mom', her parents graciously share her, and she claims a room here in my home as hers, Leilani is her 'sister'. :)
One of of 'Life is Good' experiences for sure.

Now back to reality...lol

Kay- Love Mammoth. Views of one of my favorite mountain ranges...and yours I am sure! The Minarets, Ritter, Banner...beautiful. Larry can dream about his next climb after healing. Will you take the shuttle down to the river bottom/Devils' Post Pile?
Sounds like a perfect 'get away' to me.:)

Wood- Big smile...yes...family...you have this one ...Your trip to put boat away for the winter ...fun fun with grandchildren. Lucky Mom Mom too!
I was thinking about family a lot this past few days with Jen here...I don't have a big/connected biological family...but a really nice chosen family. So I too feel very blessed.
Many of our chosen family are joining us for our son's wedding this fall. Family comes in many forms...but Wood, your's is an lovely model of happy family. Thanks again for the story.

MAry- how are the miles coming along? Still adding up? Food logging going well? I totally believe, when I start logging I do best. Making sure I eat enough and not too much. I especially 'get into' the nutrient balance. The 'game of that, helps motivate while achieving a better nutritional balance. I always eat good food. But portion control, and overall daily balance can get goofy. So, logging gets me back in step, when I have drifted. Is this how it works for you?

OK...I am headed to the city this morning to submit a new permit request to cut one of our trees. My giant redwood. If I cut it without a permit they will fine me about $10 K. I have to pay $125 to submit my request. We will see if my permit is granted. OMG...what a weird world we live in eh? I am not allowed to water it. Bleh bleh...lets see how this story plays out. People with waaaay too much power.

Choc- I imagine you are busy busy...with moving day upon you. Maybe you are already moving loads car load by carload. I am anxious to see pictures. Exciting week ahead my friend. Enjoy! Life is Good!

Hugs all around my friends
Happy Thursday!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

I totally understand the giving of a cabin weekend for his birthday. Trust me, he sees it as a gift to himself as well! I think Larry and I share other similarities other than just our name!!! Isn't it nice that in some games people play everyone can be a winner!

Taking my boat to my mother's today. I store it there for the winter and I simply won't have time anymore this summer to use it. Anyway, my 8 y.o. gs asked to go along to see MomMom. Of course, we said yes. Then his 11 y.o. sister thought she'd like to go along as well. Certainly! Can't take both of them without taking the 4 y.o. brother along. LOL! This turned into quite the 4 hour road trip! I love my family!

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

I do love my workouts! But I didn't make it to aerial yoga...just didn't fit in with the time, but my dental hygienist gave me an A++ on my check-up! I switched to a Sonicare toothbrush since the last time I went, and she was quite impressed. emoticon And it resulted in not so much scraping for me as well!

And Larry surprised me yesterday with a cabin near Mammoth Lakes for his birthday (yes, HIS birthday!) so that should be wonderful and romantic... emoticon we'll be right on a fishing stream, too bad we don't fish! and no internet...I'm so looking forward to the trip! It's only a couple of days, but I'll take it, it's been quite the summer, and time for this kind of break!

Got the weight down a few pounds last week and I was pretty happy about that but then Monday we went to a social function at the "Heritage Museum" which included wine and excellent food and last evening we had another family birthday party here. Yep those few pounds are back! I need to become a hermit!

Wow! Talk about activity though! Kay you're a crazy woman! Pilates, walking or running to work, French club, upping your PT to 60 minutes, sauna/massage (sounds hot and sweaty, but very sensual) and then my favorite, aerial yoga! You are definitely our fitness calendar girl and you keep the rest of us inspired!

Now we'll see if I can let a little of Kay's energy rub off on me and I'll see if I can up my exercise level a notch or two today!

Have a great day everyone!

It's my trail commute day, then I'm off work tomorrow, dentist appointment in the morning, and sauna/massage in the afternoon, figured it would be just as well to take the day off! I may sneak over to aerial yoga in between too.

It's been heating up out here... emoticon

Have fun Kathy, hike or no, it should be nice to get out with your hubby!

We took the neighbor to French club last night...it was fun, but a bit like herding cats to get both the neighbor and Larry out of the party by the time I was ready to leave...(I was the DD, and not a night owl, didn't want to fall asleep on the way home!)

I've got pesto meatballs in the crockpot to pack up for lunches for the freezer, and made a tzatziki for lunch. Makes me feel very domestic!

Happy Sunday!! Sunday is the only day hubby ad I have off together, we're taking our UTV out. That's one of our favorite things to do. One thing we are going to do different is incorporate a hike into it. I don't know if we will start today though, it's supposed to be 104° today!! Have a great day y'all!

Happy Saturday!

I skipped the gym last night, and signed up for Pilates this morning, I think my brain (and body) needs some rest, and having someone tell me what to do rather than doing it myself is what I need right now. I'm planning on walking to the gym, so I'll get some steps in as well!

French club tonight, our neighbor might join us!

Glad you stream seems to have recovered from the chemicals, Wood, that's encouraging! Too bad you can't harvest some of those dead trees Maui saw yesterday!

I'm still pondering how to make it easier to get into my garden cage. Larry suggested we dig up the roses and make that area a garden (eventually). I think it's actually a good idea, this area is already set up for the watering, and it's more wind protected than where I have my plants now. And it would be easier to "cage" then where I was thinking. I'll have to look into this!

Hope you all have some great Saturday plans!

Here I am for a middle of the day fly by! I don't do that often, but on my own today so you all just joined me for lunch! lol

I think we lucked out on the chemical spill. First of all, I'm about 20 miles downstream from the spill. Secondly, we had a lot of heavy storms for a couple of weeks following the spill and I think that really helped wash away and dilute the pollution. So my fishing is as good as it ever was. (I do take a thorough shower though after wading in it up to my chest for a couple of hours!

Yep, this year's wood is stacked! Just finished it this morning! BUT working with my wood is a never ending job. Now it's time to start seriously working on next year's supply. I already have 4 large trees cut down but not cut up and all of them are in the woods where I can't get to them with my truck. So I'll wheel them out one wheel barrow at a time! Just living up to my name!

Time to get back to work. At least I'm getting plenty of exercise right now! If you want to help, feel free to join in!

Life is good!

Morning Deckies!

Luna- Welcome!

Chula...haha...yes, hot here too in northern CA.

Kay- Windy...and I bet hot...We are gonna cook the next 3 days. And the reports about the upcoming El Nino are just NUTS...but too late for many trees. And wind and floods will bring down more.Poor basil. If you were closer...you know I'd share mine. Hope Larry is behaving.

Wood- The tag along ...such lucky kids. Lucky you too.
Is your creek all recovered from that 'sill' back in the early spring?
How about that wood pile? You mentioned you were whittling...does this mean your wood is stacked for winter?
How's that list?

You know you mention outdoor...and how could people not love being outside...yep...I cannot yet go driving on a freeway with my eyes. But...a friend drove me to the coast yesterday and we walked along the water's edge for 4 hours...and then drove the slow way back, up over the coastal mountains we have out here. The beach was as perfect as it gets. The mountain road was a scary reality, so MANY trees dead. Sad...but life. I am sure this cycle has happened before. We are just a blink in the life of this land. But a VERY beautiful day. Feeling grateful.

Happy Friday everyone.

Wood

Happy Friday! Work's been a rollercoaster, and not a fun one! But this is the end of the week, and then I can enjoy the weekend... emoticon

It's been sooooo windy here, my basil is very sad. I'm hoping it dies down soon, I don't mind a cool breeze, but gale force winds are another thing altogether!

No, that isn't my dog, but it looks a lot like her. Well, I was suppose to take an afternoon walk with my daughter but I popped my knee out, an old injury, but it didn't take me out like it usually does and that's great.

Night before last my oldest son and I went swimming and watched the meteor shower, didn't see the eclipse but that might have been because of the fence or the timing.

There's always room on the deck for one more Lunatic!!!LOL! You should feel right at home among this group!

Great day today! Took our 4 y.o. biking this morning. His 1st time on the tag-a-long (sort of a bike that hooks onto mine. However it doesn't have a front wheel and I do most of the balancing. A great transition between infant seats to their own 2 wheeled bike. (Google images for tag along bike if you want to see one.) Ty is our 5th grandchild to use ours. They all loved riding with "Pop" and we used it a lot! Mowed this afternoon. Went fishing in my stream tonight and did great! Can't imagine how someone can't be an outdoor person!

Mary - ...and we're sure glad you found us. You've been a great addition to the deck! Sleeping in the hammocks sounds great, but first how about a campfire and some stories?

Hi Luna! emoticon

Great job losing 30! My hubbie isn't outdoorsy either so I know how that is.

Is that your dog in your profile picture? So cute!

Please join the deck often and let us know what you're doing! I'm a relative newbie only been visiting for a year but have so enjoyed getting to "know" everyone here. A wonderful, supportive, active group!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Shall we hang out in the hammocks tonight?

Hello, everyone. I'm new to 'the Deck', and I'd like to join in if that is ok. Maybe I'll learn something new.
A little about myself, I use to be a very avid outdoorsy person, did the works, and then I got married and had kids. Hubby is NOT an outdoorsy person, so now that the kids are all young adults and flying the nest here and there or doing their own thing, I have time to fill with things that I use to do.
I'm needing to get back to a healthy weight along with the energy and I am finding it, slowly. I've lost 30 lbs, so that's helped a lot. Still got a good deal more but now, I'm walking again, and the kids and I are looking at riding bikes and not just up and down the road. My youngest daughter has a jeep and we're planning on getting a bike rack for it and go to some of the nice biking paths they have here in Florida.

Some of the things that I've been reading here on the deck, all sound wonderful and I hate to admit, I'm a little jealous of. Hopefully I'll get there, and maybe I'll get DH to come along from time to time.
Happy Trails, lurk you later!

Happy Wednesday deckies!

Wood you're upcoming houseboat trip sounds exciting! Have you done this same trip before? Hope you're putting a dent in your large pile of projects!

Maui - I'm looking forward to doing some more fermenting but I think my house is just too warm this time of year...we keep thermostat around 80 when it's 80+ outside...& no basements down here in the Low Country...I'll have a brief time in the 70s in the fall but when the temps drops into the 60s and below we'll keep the house around 65 and wear sweaters so then it may be too cool to ferment! Starting some more seeds today...mostly lettuces and some kale and mustard greens...enjoying arugula and mesclun now that I started in June...hope to harvest cucumbers again soon...Your pizza and Meritage was wonderful - thanks!

Kay - Hope you have a great day at work and enjoy your Pilates this evening!

Kathy - Hope you had some great outdoor time in your garden!

I'm getting out and getting the miles on my sneakers again...already feel so much better...I spent way to much time indoors the last couple of weeks and that's never good for my spirits

Waterfall sounds great!

emoticon Just a quick fly-by, work week so far so good...I have leather gloves to help harvest from the cage, turns out going in from underneath is better than from above with this set-up, but the final incarnation of the cage will have to have easier access! But at least my ripening tomatoes are still on the vines instead of in the squirrels tummies!

Pilates tonight, should be a nice workout after my hour long session on Monday (I'm upping from 30 min PT to an hour this month to see how it goes, I liked it, but sure felt it yesterday!)

Party sounds good! Let's not forget to watch for the shooting stars late tonight! But first water slide, volleyball and waterfall all sound great!

Choc - Sounds like a plan. We'll bring the housewarming wine!!!! I'll call you real soon to make our plans! We're in the process of working out this whole trip. We'll be going to the Salmon Festival over at Grand Haven. Ever go there?

Maui - Still lots of whittling to do!!!! LOL! However, I enjoy it, so it's all good! However, could always use help! (Even if it is virtual! LOL)

Snow - I agree with Maui - really miss your presence here on the deck!

Afternoon Deckies!

Choc- You sound fabulous! Great news the well situation and everything else has turned out so well. (haha...no pun intended)Gosh...wish I could hop on a plane and join you there to welcome Wood and Luv to you place.
But seriously...this all sounds perfect...boxes and all.
Hugs my friend. So happy for you.

Wood- Wow...the riverboat cruise would really fun! Like I have said...you two are really living the life. We are still hoping to get there to retirement and all...lol...
So, you getting that list whittled down? Hope so....

Me- I had another baby 'fix' morning...Saw this baby Saturday and got one more morning with this sweet family. Good for the soul, holding a baby. This one is not quite a month...a nice cuddle bug. Then I finished bottling some beef bone broth I made (yum),had a nice long walk this morning and heading off to eye doc, hope to get a new type of contact...yep...process still 'processing'.

I think we need another hot tub/swimming pool party. Come on, it' summer! Let's play a bit.
Waterfall running, pool slide wet, volley ball net is up, BBQ set up, who's ready?

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Hi all... Just popping in to let y'all know I'm still around... Just been crazy busy last few weeks packing, (yup Maui, I am surrounded by & living out of boxes!)...have had meetings with realtors, bankers, mortgage people, inspectors, well drillers (didn't need a new well but the first time the water was tested it showed bacteria so had to get a "well guy" come out and clean the well then retest the water... A week long process... Second test showed water "perfect" & safe to use! Whew! That was a relief!)... Been moving some stuff to temporary storage, donating stuff to Goodwill & other charities, gave a whole dining room furniture set that I had inherited from my mom to my niece (mom would have wanted that!)... Throwing stuff away (I'm betting my garbage man hates stopping at my house anymore!).... Anyway it's been a crazy busy few weeks!!! Closing on the sale of my house and my purchase of the new house should happen either the 21st or the 24th... Then "the big move" will happen a few days later (followed by weeks of unpacking LOL)

Anyway miss you all... Miss the crazy fun here on the deck... But looking forward to when I'm in the new house I can get back here and mingle once again!

Wood... Looks like when you and Gloria come visit it will be at my new home! (And guess what? I'm taking my hot tub with me so we can "break in" the new digs with wine & hot tubbing, LOL)

Choc emoticon

Our friends that will be doing the houseboat excursion with us just left. An evening of last minute planning (and a little bit of work on my bikes since my buddy is an expert bike mechanic!) This should be a really fun trip! Will be starting at Smith Falls, Ontario, head south for a couple of days and hit the big lakes then turn around and head up to Ottawa! Life is good!

Maui - Change can indeed be good! Hope it works out that way for you! ...and yes, there should be no problem getting enough exercise over the next couple of weeks and it will probaly come in many forms as well! Hot tub party tonight! Absolutely, starting right now! Sort of brings back those memories again that we just talked about the other day! Some things never get old!

Mary, I'm impressed with your son's 500 club membership!!! I remember being that young once!

Kay - Careful getting you veggies out of that wire. A couple of weeks ago we built some crayfish trips out of the same kind of mesh. Worked great but I did manage to poke a hole in my arm getting the crayfish out of the trap!

Okay, anyone else joining us in the hot tub tonight? Definitely a SSO night!

Life is good!

Happy Monday to all you Deckies!

Kay- Hope today has had a great start to your week back at work. Seems you are do some smooth sailing. Your garden cage protections seems quite substantial. Well done. Yes...this is the dilemma...how to keep vermin at bay whilst allowing me access...Hope you find the next solution... And...how was Larry's doc appointment. He was cooking you omelets and such, so he must be feeling better. (Loved the recent blogs btw) Where next...VERY good question.
Great goals you have outlined.

Wood- Welcome back! Your country wedding sounds like it was a prefect get away. I love the country wedding idea too. Everyone can relax and the enjoyment goes way up. Nice story about the bride a groom. Sounds like happiness has found them. And you get to stay home for the next couple weeks...bet that list is talking to you! You gonna get the bikes out? With all the chores you have on that list, I bet you will get plenty of exercise. I have been trying to keep up...it's been a shift for me this summer. I counted on my yard work as strength training etc...but now I have to make up for the lack of so much gardening. Change is good though right? So...what's at the top of your list for this 2 week home spell?

Mary- I have been tracking eh last few months. I really helps me. As much as I hate this focus on tracking...It seems to make me more accountable and success follows. Not fast enough for me...but...this year (The entire year), I am down a few lbs...so cannot complain. (I bounced up a few up in France, then back down...whew. So much effort. And I hear you about the consequences of feeding others...almost 35 years of making my hubbies lunches (and breakfast and dinner every day). Seldom do we eat out...so that's a lot of meals! haha...
I still make bread of course...and we have to 'manage' that! I believe you can do this!
I bet at the summer farmers' market near you there are organic cabbages...time to try fermenting again? (Our last batch is amazing!) Simple and yummy.
Bring on the 'A' game!

KAthy-Welcome back !Glad you are finding some inspiration here. I find these folks...good to the core. Funny, supportive, patient, clever, amazing...Life is Good folks. :) Glad you found us again.

Choc- Haha...you 'sound' busy! Hehe...haven't heard from you for a bit. Bet you are surrounded with boxes. I sure hope all is going well. Thinking about you! IS your sister super excited?

Snow- Hello! Yoohoo! Miss you! Just sayin! Are you unpacked enough to stop by and perk up the deck a bit. We miss your smiley face. Your decorating touches are missing.

OK...My list is callling...so far, 4 miles, bread baked, watering out back...and more...but...had to stop by and see how you all were doin.

Hot tub party tonight? Who's in?
I'll bring pizza...homemade...calories low, nutrient dense...yummy...and some
Meritage .

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Happy Monday Morning!

Welcome back Kathy!

I need to get myself moving more as well! And get back to tracking my nutrition...most days this summer I've been preparing 4 or 5 meals for my 16 year old every day...it's working great for him - combined with all the weight lifting he's put on 10 pounds or more which is what his coach wants and he was the only one on his team to make it into the 500 club when they "maxed out" a couple of weeks ago (total for squat and bench press combined over 500 lbs)...but I'm not maxing out my workouts so all this time in the kitchen nibbling on the high calorie food I'm feeding son has put some weight on me and it's not muscle!!!

And I've been using weather (rain & heat) as an excuse for not getting my steps in...but it's cooled down quite a this week so time for me to find my A game again and get back to goal weight so I don't have to buy new clothes!

Kay I hope you've foiled those squirrels! And that you've found an easier way to harvest!

Have a great day!

Pura vida!
Mary

Keep it interesting!

No the cage is not electrified...that is Maui's garden protection. This should keep them out on it's own, it' keeps me out pretty well too! emoticon So I'll need to figure out a way to make it a little more convenient to harvest the fruits of my labor! I did get the basil out a couple of times yesterday, but it's taking a bit of effort, as I can't go in over the top the way I could when the sides were plastic mesh (much more pliable than the wire!) I'll work it out!

Back to work today for a full week....but then the following 2-3 weeks will be shorter again. Since I didn't get a summer vacation, I'm taking it a day at a time!

Welcome back to the deck Kathy! Yep! Time to start enjoying life again! Get out there and hike!

As most of you know, I love being a people watcher. No, not just a girl watcher, although I've gotten pretty good at that over the years also. LOL! Well this wedding was the perfect place for people watching. My friends that got married are considerably different in age, she's 44, he's 58. There was a time that I would have wondered about just how well that would work, but no longer. She's a cancer survivor and he's had some rough times in life as well. Both are country dancers and spend a lot of time pursuing the dancing. Now they're the perfect match for each other! Anyway being a few years apart that way brought an interesting mix of friends to the reception! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon It was a lot of fun! Actually, the older I've gotten, the more diversified my group of friends have become. My group that I camp/dance with range from early 20's to mid 70's and come from all kinds of backgrounds. Makes life a lot more interesting!

Life is good1

Wow! I am impressed Kay! Now do I understand this is electrified as well? That should do the trick!

Wedding was great! My second country wedding in a year! I like all the blue jeans and cowboy boots! Yep, and lot's of dancing as well.

Actually looks like we're going to be at home for a couple of weeks. Doesn't mean there's nothing on the calendar, it'll just be local events for a change!

Larry was talking about some kind of ultrasound system (long term) to keep the squirrels at bay, but I like the electric fence idea! I'll be working with the wire cage material we got the other day to see if I can fashion a cage to keep them out. The past couple of days they've been grounded by the rain! And the bait tomato they partly ate is still on the big rock that is Larry's shooting gallery...at least they have not done more damage (yet!).

Have fun camping and dancing at the wedding, Wood!

I think we dry out today, and get ready for more rain tomorrow! At least I can turn off the sprinklers again!

Totally understand the frustration with the #$%^$$# squirrels Kay! However with me and my garden this year it's been the #$%^$$# groundhogs, the #$%^$$# rabbits and maybe a little help from the #$%^$$# deer! They all seem to be going out of their way to ruining my garden efforts! Still think you should make that video - just might go viral!

Yep, Maui, sometimes busy gets out of hand, but it's all good! Just have to put what time we have to the best use! Pace myself? Not an expert in that field, but you're welcome to come and help me finish up some of these jobs! Plenty of exercise guaranteed!

Off for a camping/wedding/dancing weekend shortly. Should be another fun time that't going to once again include too much party! Life is tough!

Happy Thursday Deckies!

Kay- Thinking about you and Larry. Oh boy...non compliance...ack! Deep breaths. Hope all goes well.
Squirrels-Tomatoes...here you go! http://www.amazon.com/Red-Snapr-EAC2M-RS-I
mpedance-Charger/dp/B000H5SYDS
I am serious...we have 2 of these now...works great!
We use PVC piping to hold wires and go from tree to tree.
Also, build a frame around tomatoes and electrify! It pops the squirrels 6-10 feet away...teh now stand near by ...pacing around....looking from afar...hahaha...
Might be a good project to occupy Larry's mind for a spell. ;)
Upside down, magical feeling...Nice!

Wood- Well...that's a lot of wood to get cut and stacked. Pace yourself, right? I imagine with all teh rain you have had, its been hard to keep up.Yes, always good to catch up. And with you so busy...haha...you are definitely living the life! Haha...np...popularity has its price eh? hehe...justkidding. ;)

Aster- Hey hi! Ahhhhhh...a solo trip again sounds lovely. I remember when you did the long paddle a few years back. That's when I learned more about how amazing you are...80 solo miles...awesome. I do hope your DH can help in a few weeks. Sounds good. Thinking of your farm always brings me a smile. Busy busy times for you.

Reso-Mary- Gosh...almost the first week of August gone...talk about 'flying away'!

Choc- You must be BUSY!

Hey...gotta run.

hmmmm. not sure I could video that class, but it would be great to see! It was a lot of fun, we were upside down an bunch, and the feeling of floating is magical...

Larry's appointment is today, fingers (and toes!) crossed that it goes well. He's been having a hard time complying with the "non-weight-bearing" part, so I'm a little nervous, but I really don't think he could have done much damage, given that the foot is in a cast, but we'll see today!

The #$%^$$# squirrels are back in my tomatoes! emoticon I had 3 pretty ripe ones the other day, and when I looked out, they were gone! And yesterday I went out, and the buggers had a big green one half eaten left in the cage the plants are in, and another piece of a ripening tomato mostly eaten. I have reinforced the cage, but need more...grrrr....

Why "Hello Aster! It's great to see you back on the deck! Maui and I were just talking about you! (all good, of course) In your forties! You guys really are just kids! I love your energy however!

Kay - Hope Larry's appointment goes well today! I think you should record one of your aerial yoga sessions and then post us the link so we can see you doing this workout! I think it must be a lot of fun! You understand completely the philosophy of keeping exercise fun through diversification. Is there any workouts you haven't done?

Maui - It was good hearing your voice again. It's been a while! Sorry we had to end abruptly but I think we had time to finish all the important stuff before then anyway! BTW, I did get a hold of Caitlin. It's good to hear from her again!

Mary - Nice when our volunteer work provides us with some personal benefits! Actually, I'm really glad to hear that you do volunteer. I'm a firm believer that all of us benefit from giving of ourselves!

Reso - "I'll Fly Away" was an excellent choice! Thank you!

As hot as it's been, I've been working in the woodpile for the past couple of days! I need to get all of the wood I cut last year split and out of my way so that I can start bringing in the wood I have down already in various spots that will be next years heat! Took 2 truck loads of split wood to my younger son since he wasn't able to cut this year due to his thyroid incident.

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

Hey, Aster! Hope you get your paddle in! That sounds like a nice retreat from daily life. I could use something like that too...but I'll settle for today off and my aerial yoga and facial "spa day".

I take Larry to his post-op appointment tomorrow, hopefully the cast will come off, and he'll be back in the boot (not that he likes the boot, but it's better than the bandage/cast thing!). Yep, Maui, it's been a long haul, the accident was March 13th...but we're getting through it.

Reso, sorry about your SIL, hope the docs figure out what's going on, and she gets better soon! Nice that you were able to get away and music! emoticon

Mary, snagged a spot for your son! It's great they give you volunteer parents those perks! You deserve it!

Wood, sounds like Canada was wonderful, great family time! Your calendar is so full, it makes me tired just thinking about it sometimes! Life is GOOD!

Last week at work it was one crappy thing after another, so stressful, but this week we're getting a handle on it, so it's going a little better...and I'm off today and tomorrow, so I'll see what Friday brings!

Late Happy Tuesday to you all.

Choc, so glad about your house and the accepted offer on the new place. I sure understand that the change is emotionally huge though...

Wood, your Canada family trip sounds wonderful.

Kay, I hope Larry is doing better.

As far as thing go for me, the garden or farm or whatever it is is eating our lives though it's also feeding us pretty well. This is just what we get for building our retirement home while were still working in town while we're in our 40's. We need to find some time away again soon, but in late June and early July did manage to get in a day each two different weekends of 16 and 17 mile paddles on the Wisconsin River. In a couple of weeks, hubs is leaving me to go up to his parents' for a weekend. I don't have to go, but I'm hoping either the morning that he leaves, or the night before, he can help me leave a car at a downstream landing and drop me in some miles upstream. It won't be like a few years ago when we each solo paddled 80+ miles, but it will be good to be out for a day and a night solo.

Happy Tuesday Deckies!

OK..so here we are August 4...month slipping buy already!

Choc- How's your packing coming along? I keep thinking about how exciting this all is for you.
:)

Mary- Excellent you, as a volunteering mom, now have no lines to stand in. And 2 walks yesterday, fresh air...yep. I think, I have always felt better after a trip outside...no matter what the weather.

Reso- Sending healing energy for SIL. Glad to hear you feel like you are drying out a bit. No gills yet eh? Your kayak trip sounds lovely...water lilies, fragrance...so nice. I used to live in MN and we had a summer place on a lake up north. It was a lake in a chain of lakes, you could go through narrow inlets from lake to lake on the pontoon. Often in the in between places there were carpets of water lilies...so beautiful. Thanks for the memory jog.

KAy- OK...you should be half way through your short week now! Whew! And hows that patient of yours? And how you you holding up my friend. What a year! I forget...when was his bike accident when this all started? Gosh...sending you extra hugs today my friend.

Sleep- yep...so important...the best place to start any journey to better health. I have been sleeping quite well the past week. Its silly really...I think my eye fatigue is helping. By the time 9:30 rolls around...it's impossible for me to keep my eyes open...lol...
Wood- I hear you...I too am a super light sleeper. I hear EVERYTHING! haha...remember the rooster in Kauai?
Anyhow...hope everyone keeps sleep a high priority.

OK...a little progress on 2 big 'fronts' for me today.
1- Had an arbourist out today to evaluate my trees. Looks like 4 need to be removed. Next step is submit his report to teh city for a permit. Sad sad sad.
But such is life...time to make lemonade...if this actually happens, we will get a ton of mulch. and...we can then put up solar. Costly and costly...but maybe good in the long run. And then plant a smaller decorative, drought tolerant tree out front. But man, talk about changing the landscape of my front...whoa. Lots of emotional here.

2. My eyes...went to eye doc again. OK.surgical eye great.
Looks like we will try again something new...Single focal Contact in non surgical eye ,
Glasses over both eyes for progressive and astigmatism...so I can hike, walk, cook, read, garden, computer at will...lol.
This sounds OK to me...cause what I need to to see and go about my business without all this monkey business. Yay!
Another few weeks...of 'processing'.

OK...what for supper? I am making BBQ flank steak, on a bed of bean mash, green beans with mint and parsley salsa, fresh tomatoes in balsamic...I am hungry! I made a ton...help your selves. There is plenty. I will even raid the wine cellar for some cab and zin...
I'm pouring...what's your pleasure?

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Happy Monday everyone!

Welcome back Wood! Trip sounds perfect! As does your upcoming weekend! Hope you get a little caught up while you're home...

Reso...sure hope your SIL is ok! Kayak trip and Axe Island music - excellent!

A natural fireworks show for you Kay! How nice! I can appreciate your joy at one sunflower...my garden suffered while I was away...I'm a little discouraged about my fall prospects right now but will start some more seeds tomorrow and hope for the best!

Spent most of today doing school volunteer work...nice surprise is that while I was volunteering at registration day for seniors I found out that they were letting parents who were volunteering register today even if their children are not seniors...so I was able to register son today instead of standing in long lines early tomorrow morning to make sure he got a good parking space!

Heading out now for a late afternoon walk emoticon only a short walk this morning so I'm looking forward to the fresh air!

Have a wonderful evening!

Pura Vida!

Crazy days last week. We finally are having some dry weather so everyone is trying to catch up on the weeks of work we missed during what seemed like monsoon season. SIL went into hospital, drs not sure what caused a severe infection, brain swelling and seizures.

On the good side, we went kayaking Saturday. The water lillies were blooming and the fragrance down on the water was incredible. Also, we went to Axe Island to play music again. Lovely to jam there under ancient trees, watching the river roll by. Wood, I requested I'll Fly Away in your honor!

I'm excited about a new month. July kind of got away from me and I didn't get much done. I hope to do better this month.

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

Be an ordinary person doing extraordinary things!!!

Sleep? First of all, I'm the world's lightest sleeper. Everything wakes me up! I have motion detector lighting around the exterior of my property. If a light goes on, I wake up. However, USUALLY I go back to sleep fairly easily. Unless of course, I'm overthinking something in the middle of the night and then there's no such thing as sleep! I agree, exercise has a profound effect on the quality of sleep. This is a topic that Maui and i have discussed to great ends!

So I'm back for a couple of days then off for a camping/wedding weekend with friends. They're dancer friends of ours and we'll be camping as a group Friday night, wedding Saturday, camping/dancing that evening and then they're off to their honeymoon.

Our family Ontario trip was amazing! Great new house rental - beautiful huge log house on a very quiet part of the lake. Terrific weather all week, so lot's of swimming and water sports. Game night every night! Simply perfect!

Now however, I'm behind in everything! Garden. Flower beds. Wood cutting. Yardwork. Photography. Trying to fit a gallon into a 2 quart container!

Still - Life is good!

Yep, exercise does help, I think cooler weather (especially cool evening breezes) makes a big difference as well...we've had to turn on the AC again the past couple of nights, but we've also been getting cool mornings and can open the house back up again!

Mother Nature treated us to an interesting lightening show last night. Couldn't really hear any thunder, but the sky kept lighting up periodically...almost never when I was looking at it directly, so my peripheral vision was treated to the show!

I may try to get out for a walk today, it's overcast here as well, so may be the time for it!

Oh, and one of my sunflowers is actually blooming! It's very small, but I'm happy I got one anyway!

Yep...sleep is a very big piece of the puzzle of life! Another benefit of exercise and good nutrition...helps with the sleeping (most of the time - sometimes stress/excitement just keep the brain from relaxing!)

Choc - so excited for you!

Maui - excited for you and Leilani too! That's a step I can't imagine yet...even college 2 years from now frightens me!

Kay - shorter work week sounds like just what you need right now! Enjoy!

3rd straight overcast day here...I love the sun but sometimes it's nice to have a little break! Some rain yesterday as well. Life is good!

Enjoy your Sunday!

I guess this sleep thing is a problem for just about everyone! At least I can usually get my 7+ hours most nights, now, if those are fully restful, not claiming that!

Work's been very stressful this week, but I vented to Larry last night, and think I'll make it through now, at least it's the weekend and I can forget all about it! And I'm taking 2 days off next week too!

Signed up for Pilates this morning (mostly because I missed going last week, just couldn't find time in my schedule, and the class I wanted to go to this past Weds was cancelled...) even though I had my training with Iain yesterday...glutton for punishment, I guess!

If the heat keeps up here I may just spend the day at the crick!

Great report Choc!
Sounds about right for your given situation.

Cat toys...lol...of course...they are 'helping'.

I have Leilani's stuff all packed up. Also emotional...I am at the same time excited, but also sad. Saying goodbye to the 'things' are very representative of this new stage of life. I am very happy for her and me...
I am plotting in the middle of the night as well...hahaha

Hi Maui... Sleep? What's that? (LOL)
I either can't fall asleep or I wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning! (Either way I just get up and do more packing & sorting instead of laying in bed "frustrated" because of these changes in my "sleep habits")... Dogs are taking it all in stride, my cats on the other hand think I'm losing my mind! (They're probably right about that LOL) the cats do love playing in all the boxes all around the house & think it's their new "cat toys"

Happy Friday, last day of July!
Welcome August!
Wow...how did this happen?

Welcome home Mary!
Congrats to the boys!
I think I'd love to go walking those miles with you. I go in the morning about 3-5...Maybe we can have a virtual walk. :)
The crick is perfect this afternoon eh? You have some serious skills with the rope swing.
I brought some inner tubes to float in and listen to the frogs and crickets.

Choc- More congrats! Well done with all the sorting. I bet you are excited. Mind a whirling. Can you sleep at night? What do the dogs think with all the commotion?

Hi all... Just a quick fly by... Everything is "crazy" here... My house is sold ... Found a house on1 acre with beautiful flower garden landscaping to move to, put in an offer on that & they accepted the offer (still have to get through all the closing stuff and "paperwork")... Had my "soon to be" house inspected (will need mostly "little" fixes with a few "bigger jobs" but nothing drastic ... In the mean time I've been sorting, donating things to Goodwill, throwing "stuff" away, and packing, packing packing! Emotional, Exhausting and Exciting all rolled into the last week or so & still so much to do !!! Anyway, have read back through some of the posts but too far behind to reply to all so just sending out "howdy's & good wishes to all the deckies out there! Will try to pop in once in awhile but until everything settles down it will probably be quick "pop in's"

Hey there deckies! Happy Friday!

Back from my trip to Kentucky...very proud of boys...5-2 for the week! Felt like I spent entire week watching games, washing uniforms and grocery shopping! Didn't manage to get away for any hikes but another mom was tracking her steps and we were getting in 8000+ every day just being team moms.

Maui - I sure hope your doc has found the right adjustment for you eyes! Loved the video! Crick time yes!!!!!! Not too hot here (86) but it's so darn muggy the crick will feel great!

Kay - Hope you and Larry are starting to get some good sleep!

I've set a goal of walking 6 miles each day for the next couple of weeks. emoticon It's time to get rid of the extra pounds before they get so comfortably settled in that they start inviting friends to join them!

After 8 nights on the road it's time to get back to making good choices - one day at the time!

Have a great afternoon everyone...hope to see you in the crick tonight!

Pura Vida!
Mary

Check out this video...heartwarming...beautiful ...smile!

Kay- Sounds like Larry is doing ok. Sleep at night can really help the entire rest of the day. So sorry about your leg cramps...water? magnesium? Hard workout?
Hope the crutches get figured...poor guy.

My eye doc tried another type of contact in my non surgical eye yesterday.
Makes driving easier...but cannot read anything...lol...computer, labels at the store...cooking! Cutting on the cutting board! OMG...just saying...gotta see when In the kitchen. haha...
Process continuing!

So...I am sorting...again...
Its super hot.
Leilani moved awhile back. She didn't take everything. Hmmm...well...so I am beginning the process ...re organizing. Good super hot weather project!

Have a happy Wednesday everyone!

Yep, feeling the heat here too! emoticon We resorted to the AC yesterday, first day in a while (well since the smoke blew in on Sunday, but that wasn't from the heat...)

From your description the crutches sound about right, I think he's just got to get conditioned for the movement, it takes a bit. I just don't remember that being an issue the first go round, but maybe he just had other things to complain about then. He's been sleeping pretty well, considering, not getting up in the middle of the night like he used to, that's a good sign, and still enjoying his multiple mid-day naps...I'm sleeping per usual, but had some awful leg/foot cramps last night. That makes it hard to get to sleep!

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Kay- Great news Larry is feeling better. Poor guy (and you...sheesh)
But make sure he isn't tapering off too much on pain med support. It's still early.
Can he ice? (Or is it so wrapped the ice won't 'get there'? Ice is a great pain reducer.

As far as the chafing ...the only question I'd have there is the crutch length. Hopefully he got them fitted well (Cause that does not always happen.) When he is standing up, and crutch in armpit, there should be an inch or 2 gap so he is not down on his arm pit. As far as a pad...I bet the ortho shop has nice options.
Gosh...another journey...but on his way.

Are you two sleeping well yet? Sending more healing energy.
Hugs.

I didn't go towel shopping yet.
I did have to go back to the eye doc and he is going to try a new contact tomorrow in my eye, one that corrects for astigmatism. Duh...

It's apparently a 'process'...blah blah...and apparently I am impatient. hehe...alsthough a compliant patient.

Had garden tomatoes, eggplant and pesto tonight. Yum. (With some mushrooms and BBQ hickory smoked chicken) Just a few plants this summer, but still some good eating happening. :)

It's gonna be HOT the next couple days...is it crick time???

emoticon news Choc! Sounds like a nice place there! The stars seem to be aligning just right for you!

Maui, I'd like some new towels too, but we have so many here, it's hard to justify. But I can see how that would spiff up the new bathroom, especially since you have a new towel bar! It would be hard to put in old towels there...

Larry's feeling better today, he's finished the antibiotics, so I feel like I can ease up on following the medications so closely. He only needed 2 pain pills today, good sign! I think the worst of it for him right now is the chafing under the arms from the crutches! I may have to go check out the ortho shop and see what they have for that.

Now that my house is "sale pending" my realtor and I visited a house on 1 acre that I have had my eye on... It needs some "bandaid fixes" but has a big beautiful back yard with lots of perennial gardens, a veggie garden and is very close to lots of state land with hiking & kayaking areas... Sent the sellers an offer over the weekend and
They accepted my offer!!!!! (Still need to go through the inspection and all the paperwork but I am doing the HAPPY DANCE right now!!!!')

Kay- Oh my...the nerve block has worn off. Hopefully you have some pain meds for the next few days.
He's lucky to have such a great nurse.
Sleep and staying out of the way...yep...sometimes the 2 best things we can do.
Its hard being dependent.. Sending you healing energy for Larry and extra hugs.

Our good news is we have towel bars!
Another step done in the bathroom.!
I might go look for new towels. Haven't had any new one in a many years.

I think he did have vitamin D checked a while back, and was OK. He does take meds for hypertension and low T, but the BP has been fairly lowish lately, he got a new home BP cuff and keeps an eye on it. And we tend to eat pretty well, whole foods etc. Anyway, the nerve block has worn off, so now he's feeling the pain, poor man! I'm just trying to do what I can to assist, and then stay out of the way! Lots of sleeping is good for him right now.

Nice that you got a ride to Woodland! And great news on the labs! Hope the repeats are as good if not better!

Good morning Deckies!

Choc- I bet you were awake last night...giddy and happy...excited...Great news my friend.

Kay-Massage, pampering...good good! Hope you slept like a baby.

Such great news Larry's surgery is behind him. Now onto to recovery...rest, nutrition, compliant, right? Then PT! He and (you) can do this! And soon onto what you both would rather be doing.
Magnesium, Vit D, Calcium...heal.

You know I recently had pages of labs ordered from my Lupus and Hashimoto's docs. And the labs could not be better. Cholesterol below lowest risk, Liver , blood levels ...everything perfect. But the biggest news were negative for all Lupus antibodies. Crazy, right? Also, my Thyroid antibodies, instead of being in the 2-3K, we down below 10 and 5. Super low.
My docs and my OBGYN all VERY interested since 2 of the docs have followed me for so long, decades.So...no proof of why this is. But coupled with increased bone density, maybe significant to watch. And of course they all want repeatable labs to confirm in several months.
I mention this because of Larry's surgery.

When I had my year of surgeries in 2012, you know I went reading a ton to keep me occupied.
I believe Diet/Nutrition has to be a huge or primary factor.
I know you eat really well. But has Larry had his Vit D checked?

Maybe during this time...also add, organic, hormone free, antibiotic free etc...you know, right?
Healing is such a big puzzle. But give the liver a break from anesthesia, pain meds etc...the aging body has a lot to do,...
Maybe do every for now?

Anyhow, sorry for the rant...it was just timely seeing docs this week after labs.

Driving...lol..not too far, thats for sure. Hubby went with me yesterday up to Woodland to see my son. I often go mid week, but cannot drive more than 5-10 minutes then need to rest my eyes...lol. Baby steps. I see doc again tomorrow to check this contact now in my other eye.

Today we hang towel bars! Woohoo!

Congrats Choc! emoticon Glad it all turned out great!

Maui, driving? Guess the vision is better, good news! emoticon

Wood, have fun in Canada!

Reso, nice work on the hats and warm clothing, and for getting the family involved in the making of it!

Larry's surgery went a bit longer than expected, and his surgeon took a lot of pictures of the inside of his ankle, and very thoroughly went through them with me...he had some pretty bad cartilage damage that was cleaned out, and the doctor expects will heal OK. So good news, now we just need to get through the healing, and see what comes out the other side. He could do some grafting if need be, but I'm hoping he'll heal from this, and be back up and running (or maybe just hiking!) in a few months time.

And as luck would have it I have a massage this afternoon...so a little pampering for me. I could sure use it!

Choc- Great news! The best ever! Woohoo! Happy Dance for sure!

Wood- Glad yoga was working this morning and that the massage seems to have helped as well. Whew. You didn't plan in any 'down time'.
Canada , here you come! Hope you get more sunshine this time my friend. Safe journey.
Hugs to you and Luv.

Kay- Thinking about you and Larry today. Hope all has gone well. Big hugs to you too.

Reso- here comes another weekend...more music??

I did 2 short drives today...whoooooo...weird...I went mid day to return a dress (LOL...also trying to get ready for my son's wedding, right?)
And...went to get groceries...all the lights inside the mall and grocery store on my non balanced eyes...oh my poor brain. lol...But...it was OK.

I think next trip to my son's hubby will have to go with me. Not sure my eyes can drive more than 12 minutes yet.

OK...celebration tonight!
In honor of Choc's home sale and inspection passing, A chocolate party!

So this is how this goes...
I set up a chocolate fountain with all the dippings and fixings. But this is milk chocolate to be creamy smooth.

Everyone bring your favorite chocolate dish.
I am bringing dark chocolate dipped garden strawberries. :)
and wine...
:)

Congrats Choc my friend!
Party!

Now is the perfect time for wine!!! Just sayin! (As the missing Snow would say.)

Fished in my stream for the first time since the chemical spill. I figured it was pretty much flooded ever since the incident, so I was hopeful the bad stuff has long since gone by. Good news. Apparently I'm far enough down stream that it didn't ruin my fishing. Caught 22 bass in less than 2 hours. Can't hardly beat that!

Did my yoga this morning and pretty well got the back back into shape. However, I would be dumb to turn down the massage!

Life is good!

My suggestions for an Axe Island add-on would be to have a permanent axe/tomahawk/knife throwing range, a blowgun range, an atlatl range, some pells for sword fighting practice work, a nice mat for some martial arts work, and a lovely natural amphitheater where we could play music and dance under the stars. Oh, and hammocks where we can rest from our exertions.

Maui, hope you get the eye thing settled soon. That kind of thing can be such a show stopper. I sometimes get migraines that include visual distortion, and my level of function drops from 100% to about 10% in seconds. Hang in there.

More music down by the river tonight (different river, though). I enjoy going and sitting with friends and relatives to listen but I get antsy if I have nothing to do with my hands. So I crochet warm winter hats for our local Coats for Kids program that provides winter coats for children whose families can't afford to buy them. I joked with my SIL that perhaps some unsuspecting child will put one on and start singing the songs I was listening to when I crocheted it!

We currently have plans for many of the "crafty" people in my extended family to get together early in September and sew hats, scarves and mittens from that warm, soft fleecy fabric to also go to Coats for Kids. My goal is for us to make 15 sets. So I am buying up all the discount fleece I can find now. :)

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

Afternoon Deckies!

Wood- Thanks for the exuberant good morning!
Your wood shop projects sounds excellent as ever. Jenga...outdoor style...Fun!
And Axe Island for our deck...your bet! LOL... Singing, target throwing and more...lol...perfect addition to our landscape.
Busy bee as ever...

Choc- Sorry I missed the wine and hot tub last night. You know my eyes are goofy...hopefully better soon. But...Fingers , Toes...everything crossed for the inspection to sail through.

Kay- HAngover...oops...Its been awhile since I had anything to drink actually. (Since France), anyhow...Good you had such a fun visit, great wine, cheese conversation...you bet ...sometimes its just what was needed. Good for you.
So...tomorrow is Friday! Are those cabinets/files all put away by Mr Larry? Please give him a hug for us. Tell him hubby and I are sending healing energy etc.

OK...I am trying to keep up here on the deck, but...Feeling a bit challenged with reading and typing. Its a long story, but eyes are not quite 'there' yet. Had a complication (of course)...lol...and a posterior vitreous detachment of my surgical eye causing 'floaters' in my field of view. Also this makes it impossible for me to wear the glasses I had prepared...(An older pair, with r lens removed and replaced with a clear lens)
So until today my only option was to go no glasses...one eye 20x20 and the other -375 plus astigmatism. No driving , reading, even walking a challenge...too much disparity between teh eyes.
So, today he fitted me with a contact for my non surgical eye, correction to 225...so I can try and still read a bit. Now I need to go buy reading glasses...
seriously???
An adventure as usual...lol.

But this typing and reading takes a bit, fatiguing...lol.This too will get worked out with time.

Wood- Should I set up the massage table? Don't need good eyes to help out there. Gotta take care of that 'ol back, right?

Is it too early for wine??

Good morning! I'm a little hungover...had a glass too many at the neighbor's last night, emoticon they invited us over to dinner with their nephew, Johannes who's in from Germany. Good conversation, as usual, and a bit too much wine and cheese! But every now and again that's what's called for.

Sunny side up trail? I think there may actually be an over easy trail after the crispy bacon trail (although that sounds like a bad name for a mountain bike trail), there is definitely a bacon strip trail. Pretty creative with the names back there!

I'm trail commuting to work today, not sure if I'll jog it or walk it...and we're having a potluck! I brought my tabbouleh in yesterday....it should be pretty good today, given the day to meld all those herbs together. I used a bunch of tiny tomatoes from my dad's, little yellow pear tomatoes and tinier orange tomatoes. Should be tasty! emoticon

So we're building Axe Island now? Sounds like a plan! Axe throwing and a music/dance area? Guess we need a good schedule so those don't overlap!

Choc, hope you get good news from the inspection! I would think the buyers would be OK with any findings, as they know the age of the house, one would expect to find something and just deal with it.

Have a great day all!

Rise and shine, Deckies! It's a beautiful low humidity day! Uncommon in these parts!

You know my fingers are crossed for you Choc! Soon this will be all a thing of the past and you, like Snow, will be in a new spot and loving it!

Worked in the wood shop until pretty late last night! Was making a giant Jenga game. You remember the Jenga game right - where you start off with this solid wood tower and you remove one piece of wood and add it to the top until someone makes it fall over? Well then one's made out of 2 x 4's and might be 6 ft. tall before it collapses! Saw one being played at the wine festival and thought it looked like fun! Maybe we'll try it out here on the deck! A new challenge!

Also split wood for a couple of hours and the back is feeling it. Not used to that anymore!

Hope you all have a great day!

Life is good!

Magic carpet ride strikes again! I posted a long commentary about my home inspection that took place today and it seems to have disappeared from the deck! .... Short version, inspection took 3 hours, I won't see the report for a few days yet so I'm a nervous wreck & need some wine with my deckie pals tonight ! emoticon

Wood... Enjoyed our talk too

House inspection was today... All the realtors, the potential buyers and the inspector are finally gone… They were here over three hours!... The inspector was a real sour Puss! ... I know he's just doing his job but he didn't have to be such a BIG GROUCH! ... He's supposed to give my realtor a copy of the report, but that might not happen for a couple days... I think I'm having a nervous breakdown over all this crazyness! Sure hope the report wasn't too bad for this old house :-/ So now it's the wait-and-see game again! Sigh :-(

I definitely am ready for some wine on the deck tonight!!!!
