I love Outdoor People Meet ups! Where the virtual becomes the real! Maybe some cases that would be surreal! LOL! Had a few wonderful experiences myself and hope to have a few more in the future!

Making an unplanned road trip to Virginia today! Glor, also known here as LuvQuilting made an impulsive buy of another long arm quilting sewing machine. So now we drive to Virginia to pick it up. Life is good! (and I love impulsive behavior)

Be back tonight to fill you in. Save me a spot in the hot tub!

Life is good!

Oh, how fun, a Maui/Aster deck meet-up! I bet you guys cooked up a storm!

I have one tomato plant that seems to be pretty much done, but the rest are hanging in there in spite of the squirrels. I've been getting some almost every day, and did enjoy a couple with my lunch.

Wood, sorry to hear about the yellowjackets! That sounds painful!

Mary, your creek sounds cool, at least when there is water in it....dolphins too!

Choc, glad you got out!

My new trainer told me last night he's cutting back so now I have to decide if I go meet him at his other gym (more of a cross fit type place) or find another trainer at this gym, or see if I can workout with him in the morning. Decisions, decisions!

The massage was great and painful all at the same time....I'm hoping to defeat some of the knots in my neck. I don't think it will interfere with my bike ride, at least I hope not.

Maui, you're right about the snow, it's gone! Well there was still a bit here and there when we were there in July, but very little. I'll be interested to see if any of that remains.

Yay! The cat is out of the bag. Maui spent a few days at my house and we cooked together. With so much awesome garden produce. Plus I had cherries and apricots from Door County. Beautiful cherry pie!

Maui, sorry to hear your tomatoes are quitting. We're looking at temps near 90 for the next week, so I'm hoping that the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant really ramp it up.

Mary, it's nice to meet you.

Life is good. Good night to all.

Afternoon breaktime for me!

LOL...Hello deckies!

Aster was right, Wood was right...hello to all my good friends.
Aster- Like everyone has said, welcome home. Sharing stories of your farm, your wry wit , stories of food adventure...all very much missed and appreciated. Good to see you here. :)

Wood- Aster was right...bread is out of the oven, dinner planned, garden weeded, watered, deadheaded, compost turned, dr appointment complete, vacuuming and dusting done, laundry all complete. (LOL, we were on a weeks' journey to Chicago to attend the wedding of 1 of my 4H kids, visiting another 4H 'kid', and then a lovely visit to Aster's farm. I cannot say enough how much I loved the visit. ) More on this later.

Mary- triple digit heat...oh my. I bet you could use a dip in the pool and maybe go hang out under the waterfall. Yes?

Choc- Friday Fiesta- yes ideedy! OK...I'll make stuffed Poblano peppers with walnut sauce and home-made corn tortillas. They'll go with Aster's guacamole too! "Rained all night here", hmmm, I think I used to understand what that meant. ;) Your yak trip...yay yay yay! :)

Wood- Ack! Yellowjackets! Awful! Like your attitude though, "comes with the territory". How's your son? did he get stung too? Join Mary and me by the waterfall? That might help those stings.

Kay- Hey...good you are getting the massage before the long bike ride. I'll have to look up the trail. When I was flying to Chicago last week, we went over the High Sierra of course, not a drop of snow cover, never have I seen it like this. We crossed just south of Tahoe, and could see all the way to whitney. Beautiful but scary. The ride will be dry and hot I bet. And, yes...Aster's house is amazing. By dawn, dark, mid day sun, dusk...windows full of light, tile and stone, natures's green, wood, a private valley full of life. Talk about 'Life is Good'!
And a new trainer...new exercises...always a good idea. :)

Snow- yes, you finally meet Aster. :)
I got home late wed night, and yesterday and today spent time out back...gosh, it may be warm and dry, but it sure looks like fall may be coming early. What do you think? I see you re putting out fall 'things' and spent tomatoes away. My tomatoes are maybe quitting early too...weird!

OK...Break is over.
Much to do.

Life is good.
See you all later in the pool.

Friday Fiesta it is!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

----Ghandi

Kay- Have a wonderful bike trip! emoticon

Choc - I do love salt water and tidal creeks but right now I would love to have a cool fresh water lake nearby! Still having triple digit heat emoticon went for 5k walk at 7:30 am when son left for school but that was not early enough...pure misery on way the home...but I did see some Wood ducks! Fiesta sounds like a great idea to me! emoticon

Wood - I live in a heavenly place most of the year but the dog days can be rough emoticon ! I'm just across the harbor from the Holy City (Charleston, SC). Well-to-do Charlestonians head to the NC mountains after the 4th of July but working girls like me stay and sweat it out. The crooked little creek behind my house takes me to the harbor when the tide is in...when the tide is out there is just a bed of pluff mud with a tiny trickle in the center...not even a mud minnow could get to the harbor! It's a 2 mile paddle (1 mile as the crow flies - that's how crooked the creek is!) so I get 4 miles of paddling in some nights. If I time it right I can enjoy a beautiful sunset and if I'm lucky I there are dolphins swimming at the mouth of the creek!

Sorry to hear about your yellow jacket encounter! I stepped in a hole when I was about 12 years old and will never forget that pain. I'm wincing right now recalling it! Hope the itching stops soon!

Pura Vida! emoticon

Mary

Wood--It's good to be back. Very sorry about your tangle with the yellow jackets. All I can recommend is antihistamines and ice, but you're probably already doing that.

Kay--Yes, we're in the house. We got our occupancy permit toward the end of October, put up our city house for sale in the beginning of November and moved most of our stuff as soon as the realtors had pictures taken. We accepted an offer in less than a week and moved out entirely the first week in December.

Choc--I love the idea of a lake open to wildlife but closed to the public most of the year. What a precious opportunity to go there some time in a 2 month span.

I'll bring the guacamole to the Friday Fiesta.

Wood... Nope, I was yakking on the lake where I saw the eagle and its nest last year (been there twice this month...nest is still there but didn't see the eagles... May be too late in the summer ... This lake is a wildlife reserve and only open to Public use July and August)... Anyway, today I'm thinking of heading to the Lakes that you, Luv and I had our "picnic on the hill"... Kind of waiting to see if the weather is going to clear up or not (rained all night here and still looks "iffy ")

Yellow jackets! Yikes! I'd be in the hospital if that had happened to me... Big time allergy to bee stings (usually carry an epi pen on my outings "just in case")

Mary... If you kayak tidal areas that's awesome... I used to take trips to Florida Keys and loved kayaking through the mangroves and coastal shorelines... So much to see in those shallow waters!

Snow... Thought of you yesterday ... Had three hummingbirds buzzing around my feeders (haven't had as many hummers as usual this summer so was fun to watch them)

Lots of new members here & lots of "returnees" ... I think this calls for a "Friday Fiesta" (ole!!!)

Nope. Didn't get cut off. Didn't even post. Remember sometime back when I was getting repetitive posts? Well it looks like it started to do that to me again and ran out of energy or memory! LOL! Better than the post just disappearing into the cosmos!

Enjoy the long bike ride Kay! No doubt in my mind that you're up for it!

Mary, I think I should know the answer to this, but I just don't remember. Where are you located? Apparently your kayaking river is tidal and your weather is hot, but I have no idea where you're at.

Wish I would have been with you on the kayaks Choc! Were you on one of the lakes where you took us? Swans there? We're getting some of your storms but the bad ones are missing us so far. Barely.

Aster - I'm thrilled to see you back! You've probably already been told how much I miss your energy and your farm adventures here on the deck! Glad to see you haven't slowed down one bit!

Just so you newer members know, Aster and her husband are the kind of people who don't just dream about what they want; they go out and make those dreams happen!

Speaking of active and dreams; good morning Snow! I don't play "Words With Friends" on my phone either. Can't stand that tiny work area, I play on my tablet where there's enough screen to see what the words actually are! To me, it's a fun addition to the "communication alternatives".

Maui - I know you're out there!

Wednesday evening I was helping my older son load some of my seasoned firewood onto his truck as payment for helping me cut up some new trees. It was almost dark. Got into a yellow jacket nest and couldn't see the little #^&*@#s as they were stinging me. Got quite a few stings on my right arm and on my face. Painful then. Now the itch is driving me crazy!

Comes with the territory.

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

I've got Monday off, so we're headed back to the Bishop area to get in a really looooong bike ride Larry's been eyeing. Coyote ridge. Hope I'm up to it! And that we can figure out a way to do it without a car spot.

Nice that you were able to get in that kayak, Choc! I think you have your priorities in order! emoticon

Mary, hope you cool down soon, enjoy the waterfall!

Wood, did you get cut off? Seems like your last post ended rather abruptly....

I have a massage scheduled for tomorrow, I really need it, I've developed a crick in my neck that I can't explain...it just popped up yesterday afternoon at work, and I didn't do anything to it!

Yay for you Choc! emoticon I am quite jealous!

All this kayak chat makes me want to get in mine so badly! Tides are perfect this week for paddling after work in the creek behind my house. But alas emoticon , it's just too darn hot emoticon ...heat index 110...hottest day of the year (for the second day in a row, sure hope it's not even hotter tomorrow)...

I just keep telling myself that fall will come eventually... emoticon

Aster it's nice to meet you!

Wood, sorry, I don't play words with friends either

Hope all of you enjoyed some fun outdoor time today!

I'm heading to the waterfall again tonight to try to cool off!

FINALLY was able to sneak in a 1 1/2 hour kayak outing between rain storms ... Now I need to see if I can also sneak in mowing my lawn before the storms hit again (kayaking obviously took priority over the lawn, LOL)

Gotta "go mow " .... Be back in a little bit :-$

Hey Brenda, nice job on the walking! If you want some in depth info (blogs) on habit building check out James Clear, he has some really nice stuff.

Aster, great to see you back on deck! A professional photographer for the new home, sounds great! I do recall seeing pics on FB when you were building, it looked pretty spectacular. So you must be all moved in? Hope that kayak gets some water time soon!

I'll be meeting with my new trainer again tonight, it's been really fun so far, only a half hour, but packed full of new stuff. I expect a good workout tonight as well.

Hi Snow, Depends on which kayak. My nice fragile flatwater boat gets to stay in the garage. The plastic/polylink/plastic boat for bumpier paddling is perched on a dusty pile of hay. We need to make it past this weekend with a company picnic and prepping for the builder to take professional pictures of our house and Labor Day weekend when we go to Iowa for a super fun party our friends throw every year. I should probably start biking to work from our condo too. A few nights a week, we stay in the city. I've just never investigated my route from here since we sold our old house and moved. I suspect Maui will return to the Deck from the kitchen once she's tended to the garden and pops a loaf of bread into the oven.

Aster... emoticon great to see you back on the deck!!!! My kayak hasn't hit the water much this summer either,...seems like every time I planned to go "yakking" we either had rain storms or high winds (today included)... Hoping to get out more in the next few weeks, and also hope to squeeze in a backpacking trip sometime this Fall (will be a last minute, "the weather looks good that week" kind of trip.... The older I get the more I try to avoid backpacking & camping in cold, nasty rainy weather... Can we all say "whimp?" LOL) was actually planning to go this week but we've had heavy rainstorms almost every day with more predicted through the weekend into next week... So I'm aiming for a Fall trip now :-)

Greetings Deck Friends! After a very long absence, I'm here making an appearance for the first time in a few years. Many changes for me in the last few years. I read this thread going back about a week. I have been focused on good food for many reasons, weight loss a bit less, but I should probably get back at it. I don't know how to count my exercise these days because on a day like today it entailed much hauling around of hundreds of feet of hose up and down hills to get the trees watered that we planted this year. I had a great helper who is also great company today though. Believe it or not, I only managed to go kayaking once last year and haven't been out yet this year. That's making me a little crazy, but with the new house, small orchard and ridiculous garden, it's hard to get away. My husband and I hopeto get out kayaking after school starts on one of the nice days of late fall/early summer. Kayaks aren't meant to sit in a barn collecting dust for such a long time. Good to get a little catchup reading done, Wood, Choc, Kay, Brenda and Maui...apologies if I'm missing anyone else. Snow, I know of you, but your time and my time here didn't overlap much. Cheers to all. Glass of wine, but probably no hot tub unless it cools down a little tonight.

I am going crazy hearing about all this "weather... rain, thunder, emoticon downpours..... cats, dogs.... I sort of remember what that was... back in the days! Send some our way please! Most we have going on is some clouds and fog this morning coming from the coast, Its a bit chilly this morning accompanies by some wind. But pretty much going to be in the 80's for the next couple of weeks.... still summer!

Wood, I have a lot of clients who profess to love "Words with Friends"... I don't even bother with apps anymore, use my phone as a phone and a camera and that's about it. Im no techie !

emoticon Have a nice work day today, looking forward to Zumba then spinning tonite. Yesterday I finished yard stuff and moved things around, put nearly spent tomatoes out of sight and new autumn table cloths on all the tables, freshening things for the next couple of months. My hubby loved what I did and he wanted to spend most of the evening enjoying the flowers, twinkle lights, and new patio arranging I did... he almost forgot to pack his bags for this mornings flight to So Cal. Im back home after early airport run, watering the lawn quickly, and enjoying the peace and quiet.

How is your day going Brenda? emoticon Try to get that walk in for me, and take that notebook with you to track... another thing to remember, I know! But soon all this mindfulness will be matter of fact, and then you can increase your quest to a healthy lifestyle a little at a time, easy does it.... but do challenge yourself. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's NOT a train!

emoticon Have a great day everyone, did we lose Maui in the kitchen somewhere?? I hope she didn't topple in to the compost bin! Im off like a herd of turtles, busy Wednesday!

Wood... I've been in the same up and down "trap" for a couple months now... Very frustrating!!!!

We had big storms here yesterday ... Heavy downpours, wind and local flooding warnings ... Supposed to get more rain right through the weekend (at least I don't have to water the flower gardens... Always a plus)

Hope to get out kayaking today before the next batch of rain hits this afternoon...

Have a great day everyone! :-)

Up 3 pounds, down 3 pounds, up 3 pounds, down 3 pounds - if I was moving that marker on a regular basis (which I'm not), that's what you would see. Today we're on the upper end of that 3 pounds again and that's not good considering it's Wednesday. Usually during the week, I get loads of exercise and I avoid the drink (except here on the deck) and snack stuff and I drop to the lower end of my tidal cycle. Then comes the weekends with social events and I'm back up again. It's going to be a tough day again today to get my exercise in. This morning I have an aorta screening (routine) and this evening a birthday party for my 10 yo gd and my 39 yo son. Accompanied by good food of course.

Yesterday I drove in to get Mom to join us for the birthday extravaganza. Oh yeah! Took my 10 y.o. for her first softball pitching lesson yesterday morning! She did great! Lot's of potential there!

Well gotta go get ready for today's screening!

Have a great day everyone!

Great job walking last night Brenda! emoticon You are well on your way to succeeding at your first goal! emoticon

Kay I had a waterfall here last night...I heard some distant thunder and was putting a thundershirt on my little dog, Harry...well the thunder Harry and I heard was distant but there was a cell right on top of our house that exploded and the proverbial bottom completely dropped out of the sky...we're talking emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon ...of course my thoughts raced to my baby plants I had just put in the real world on Sunday...so I ran out in the deluge (and the accompanying electricity) and moved 3 50 lb pots to my deck under eaves where they would have some protection...needless to say I was drenched...but happy because it was the first time in 3 weeks that I have been outdoors and cool! And my plants survived! Did you really walk to work in 90 degree weather? I am so impressed!

Hope everyone has had a great start to your week!

Thanks Snow, Mary, and Kay!

I agree that I need to get moving. My muscles need it as well as my mind. Being outside has been the best way for me to heal. I took a mile walk last night, and even though my muscles were still sore from yoga, it felt awesome. I feel like I should do some classes at the rec center, but I really am not a fan of group exercise. They do, however, have a Bodyflow class that interests me. I may give that a try a few times to see how I like it.

Kay-I like your suggestions of building habits versus willpower. Willpower for me is doing is ALL AT ONCE which never seems to work. I think my goal right now is to be active 3x a week. That's a good habit to build...

Thanks all for the encouragement!

Starting small to end small.

Brenda, nice to see you POP by the deck! That yoga sounds great...I love doing yoga outdoors, just give it a fresh feel.

I agree with Snow and Mary, and I've been reading a lot about willpower vs habits, I think if you focus on building new habits as opposed to trying to gut it out by willpower you will be more successful in the long run, although it might feel like its taking a long time! Anyway the blog I just read suggested making the habit you want to start very easy, meaning if you are trying to increase the amount of veggies you eat (for example) you would add one per day to start, and then you can slowly increase over time until you get to where you want to be. You could do the same with exercise, start with an easy goal, say walking up and down the block every night after dinner, and build from there once that habit is set.

I don't think we've met but you are clearly a true outdoor person! emoticon That course sounds amazing!

I completely agree with Snow...baby steps emoticon ...maybe set a couple of small, doable goals each week then take one day at a time...it helps me to text my weekly goals to a friend to make me more accountable...post your goals here if you like and we'll be your accountability buddies! And Snow is also right about moving...in my weight loss phase my number one way to burn calories was walking...long hikes are great but sneaking in 5 or 10 minutes whenever you can really adds up!

And yoga on the beach! emoticon Truly awesome...you are off to a great start!

emoticon emoticon

Pura vida!

Good Morning Everyone,

I just returned from a trip to Cape May NJ - my first visit there and a lovely time we had. On Saturday my husband, stepdaughter and her husband signed up for Yoga on the beach. It was absolutely wonderful and I am still feeling it today! Hubby and his daughter have been doing yoga together every Saturday morning and it's been wonderful to see their progress and a great way for them to spend time together now that she's grown.

I hate coming on here when I'm feeling down, but that's why we are here, right? To support one another. Somehow I'm at the highest weight I've ever been. And I'm sort of astounded. I haven't been eating great, but I've been active and I wonder what the the heck is going on. So I'm going to focus, work on eating in addition to remaining active. And I would just love you guys to check in with me every now and then because I need support. I know I need to do this of my own will, but knowing you deckers are cheering me on helps a whole heckuva lot.

Besides that, I'm pretty excited about a course I'm taking this fall-it's to be come a PA Master Naturalist. I'm excited about how often this will get me outside and getting to explore new places in PA and learn all about our local ecosystem!

I hope you're well well and trekking forward.

Starting small to end small.

Hey Mary! Any time you want to hang at the waterfall is a good time! We've been getting that heat the past few days as well, I've been hand watering some of my new plants, and some of the thirstier ones as well! And picked a few more tomatoes. I haven't heard of that book or the author, but do subscribe to the notion that "food is medicine" in the sense that it can provide nourishment that is healing if we make good choices most of the time. I do also subscribe to the notion that too much deprivation leads to bad behavior, so better to have a little of what your are craving than deprive yourself and binge on it later. It's all about balance.

Wood, glad you had a nice dancing/camping weekend! I bet you and LUV were a sight on the trail on the tandem! Sounds like so much fun!

I'm all ready to walk to work today, I don't think I'll get rained on, looking at the weather, but then I've been surprised before! It is supposed to get into the 90's though.

I found a giant hornworm on one of my tomato plants yesterday, he's been dispached, but sure wish he was the last! This one was the biggest one yet!

Had a wonderful weekend camping/dancing. As you guys already know, I love this group of fun loving people that we do these campground/country dances with. Campfires are everynight and are almost as much fun as the dancing! (Not quite as good as the campfires on the deck of course!) Glor and I got out to the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail on Saturday on our tandem bike as well. Really nice trail with lots of Civil War history.

Got a phone call on my cell while at the campground from a neighbor who had some trees cut down professionally but didn't have them removed. Then he decided he needed to get them cleaned up in a hurry. So he called me. Guess what my son and I did yesterday afternoon and evening! A little sore this morning.

It's interesting hearing about the weather each of you experience in your neck of the woods. While some of you are having extreme heat, others drought, we are having a really pleasant summer. Yes, we have had more than our share of showers with heavy rainfall, but we've also had really pleasant temperatures, very seldom getting above mid 80s and frequently lately staying in the upper 70's. I think we only had two 90 degree days this summer. That's after having a couple of summers in a row with extended periods of time of 100 degree weather. No complaints here whatsoever.

Have a great week everyone!
Life is good!

Good evening decksters!

Thanks for joining me on the deck the other night Kay! Was nice to finally catch a meteor shower!

Maui - I checked out a library book yesterday that a Sparkfriend recommended - Wahls Protocol - I've read about half and it reminded me of what you posted a couple of weeks ago about what you've done with your nutrition that has completely changed your health...Dr. Wahls has MS and was almost bedridden when she changed her diet and changed her life (she is now out of her wheelchair can walk 2 miles and bike 5)...you all probably know about her already (there's a viral video of her at a TEDx - I haven't watched it yet) but I've just been "introduced" and so far her book sure make perfect sense...preventative medicine at the cellular level via daily nutrition...seems like you figured it out years ago Maui emoticon !

Hope you all had great weekends! I did! I moved some of my babies (cucumber, snow pea and okra seedlings) out to the real world and am attempting to germinate some new babies on the porch)...still have a few babies (lettuce and brussels sprouts) that I don't think are ready for the heat (96 today) so I'm keeping them cooler but still trying to get them some sunshine emoticon

Sure was hot out there today so I think I'll be chilling near the waterfall tonight!

Pura Vida!

Nanu, nanu...I remember how I enjoyed that show when I was young, and his movies too, it's so very sad that he could bring such joy to everyone, but unable to find it for himself...but depression is a tough one, I know from personal experience, it's hard to see out of that pit when you're in it. And hard to ask for help out as well.

Mary, glad you stopped by again, the treehouse is a great hangout, especially after a trip to the wine cellar, I think I'll join you there, and I'm sure there will be a great meteor show for us tonight on deck! emoticon We deserve it!

Hey y'all!

What a great time you've been having on the deck! And what wonderful things you've been doing off the deck!

Hate that I missed all the skygazing! on the deck and in real life ): - we had nothing but cloudy skies and rain here...

Hope you all have great weekends! I think I'll hang out in the tree house tonight (after a quick stop at the wine cellar emoticon

always time for another cup of coffee... here, I'll pour you a cup! (a little kahlua in it too?)

Yes, Very sad about Robin Williams... he was one of my favorite celebs... I grew up watching him on TV and in movies... he brought so much joy and laughter to everyone, all the while hiding his own pain and challenges ... RIP Oh Captain, my Captain

Another ideal night for sitting in the hot tub and stargazing: crystal clear, cool and again at midnight no moon to obliterate the view. However no shooting stars! Not one! Guess you can't always be lucky!

Maui - Good talking to you again. Always good! A little surprised the Robin Williams topic never came up here on the deck, but now that I voiced that I would like state that I was sorry that he was in that kind of pain. Funny how someone who brings so much laughter to millions can be in so much turmoil himself.

Snow - "Hey!"

Charity - Quick get in as much summer as you can before that school bell starts ringing!

Choc - Time for one more coffee?

Off to pack the camper!

Life is good!

No real stargazing for me....I'm too much of an early bird, and can't stay up that late, but I'm glad you did get to see the show, Wood! Thanks for letting us join in the viewing with you!

Hope the wood gathering goes as planned as well, no wood poachers!

Charity, have fun with the back to school! That sounds like a lot of food prep you have to do!

Maui, I don't recall the time of day I found those worms....but it was probably in the afternoon? They are tricky, but I found them hiding in the eaten leaves, and boy do they blend in! I kind of feel like I get to a zen state and then they pop out, like those magic picture things.

Dinners up, gotta run!

Break time!

Wood- Love you 'get to ' scavenger all that wood. Keeps the fires burning. Exercise...the whole deal seems just right.

Kay- You Wood is right, you are quite the role model for many of us. :)

Charity- I think those students are very lucky , having an outdoor minded person guiding them. Lots of teacher minded outdoor folks here on the deck. Sept always had such a ramp in activity and emotion for me...as the year began. (I was not a teacher, but for for the UC in youth development, trained adult volunteers, worked with youth age 5-19, countywide. Quite fun really.
What are your favorite ages to teach? Subject?

I have a busy time yet again. This weekend I get to attend a wedding for one of my grown up 4Hers. Its really fun having so many 'kids'...lol. Another 'kid' of mine is having breakfast on Sunday before she heads to a new job, as a teacher, 5th grade English. :)

Life is good.
Back to the list.

We finally had ideal conditions for star gazing last night. Monday night the Super Moon was too bright to see many stars. Tuesday night it was pouring down rain. Last night was perfect. We went out to the hot tub around midnight and it was perfectly clear and the moon had not yet risen. Best of all the meteorites were definitely shooting "Stars" - frequent huge and bright! Some had tails that completely spanned our portal to the skies! It was really awesome!

I've been very busy with the chain saws again this week. The power company comes through every couple of years with a tree cutting crew removing trees around wires that could become problematic for the power grid. They now leave all the large wood behind for the landowner to do whatever he chooses with it. Fortunately for me, in my neighborhood that means call "Yours Truly" to remove it. Being the scavenger I am, I get right to it before other scavengers show up and take it without permission. Life is good!

Maui - Yes there is a lot of irony in that bottled water thing. Doesn't quite seem right! Sorry I missed you yesterday, but, yep, the music of chainsaw covered up my message alert. Try again.

Kay - Mud on your hiking shoes shows the world you're the real deal, not just one of those impersonators that buys the clothing and tries to look outdoorsy, but is afraid she might get wet in the rain. Much better being the role model they're trying to impersonate!

Charity - "Back to school bash". Nope don't really miss it a whole lot. Let's see when school starts here I'll be heading out with my RV to Illinois, then Missouri, to be followed up by Kentucky. Nope don't think I'm going to feel real bad about not being in the classroom. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed teaching, but I even enjoy post teaching even more.

Snow - Thanks for the beer. It was the perfect time! I don't drink beer a lot anymore, but there are certain activities (like cutting wood) that a beer afterwards is just right!

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

Howdy deckies!

Wood- Great news! Harvest sometimes sneaks in eh? often I look at my tomatoes and think..."hmmm, not too many", then I start picking...hahaha...
Yes, the creek and stars were just what I needed last night. Nothing like a night under the stars.
Yeah, too bad we cannot share. I think I may have already posted this, but last week I read that 2 of the top plastic bottled water companies, get their water from California and sell it nationwide. What??????????????????????????
So many things wrong with that, right?

Charity- hmmm...2 weeks on, 2 weeks off...hmmm...I think we have all heard about the 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'...what do you think? Is this lifestyle good for you? I can definitely see pros and cons. My hubby didn't ravel too often while our kids were growing up. But, he sure did work 6-7 days a week and long hours. Sounds like you have quality time when hubby is home (no online etc). What ya cookin?

Kay- Muddy boots...oh yes. And a drenching...hmmm...We sure missed that down here. But I have seen plenty of reports of thunderstorms in the mountains, but I thought they were dry storms. Glad you got rain! But nobody wants those horn worms. I found 1 and have been hunting for more. There have to be more if there was one, right??? I am looking...cannot find! What time of day are you finding them?

I have my car in the shop, just a check up.
I was up at my sons' all day yesterday, so I have catch up here too...

Who's in for another summer night at the crick? Before dark we could rope swing a bit, then Hike back up to the deck for a BBQ , then sleeping bag night on the deck for star gazing while the meteor show is still on? Who's in?
I'll bring stuffed figs and Wood, I have a ton of jalapenos, so...Dead rats tonight baby!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Hey ya'll! Just checking back in after a bit of an absence...

My husband works two weeks on, two off in the Alaska oilfields. When he is home I don't spend as much time online. But he left this morning and I'm playing catch-up before taking off on a long hike this morning with a couple of girls from our church youth group. Assuming it doesn't rain.

And we have a big Back to School Bash tonight with about 60-100 kids! I gotta fix food for that this afternoon.

Gonna be a busy day!

We got quite the drenching on Monday, thought I'd have to call for a ride home, but by the time I was ready to head out, it had cleared. But the creek was high! I usually cross it on the way home, since it runs below the hill to my house, but I went a different way, so I could hit the street earlier, since there was so much MUD everywhere, and all over my new hiking shoes... emoticon Guess they are properly broken in now!

I'll be back to those trails again today, hope the mud has cleared a bit, the pond was full of it, as the hill above it had slid down...but the ducks seemed to take it in stride, so far as I could tell.

My tomatoes have a bunch of fruit, and a bunch of horn worms. I really hate those things...so hard to spot, I've "removed" 8 in the past couple of days. emoticon

It was nice having you join me last night Maui, It's been a while. Hey we actually have been getting some stuff to process from the garden - not a complete failure. Glor canned a bunch of tomatoes, tomatoe juice and zuch soup, and red beets. For a while, I didn't think we'd get anything.

Weather is supposed to get nice today, but man did we get rain yesterday and last night!!! Too bad we can't share with the West Coast!

Over the hump!

Oh man! Just lost a post! Darn Darn Darn! They are just never as good the second time!

OK...
Evening Deckies!

Warmer pix, hummers, skinned knees and rain, moon and stars...all good good stuff.

Wood- Sorry your gd had a couple of boo boo's...sounds like she weathered them though. Whew. What a jam packed couple of days!

Snow- glad you were able to stop by! Gym, hikes, garden and hummers...all good. Yep, I too am mindful of the air. But this season seems much better. Just that one bad day for me when the Ozone levels went way up. otherwise...I have been better.

Kay- back to work...and new bike racks! yay! Your Larry is quite handy there. :)

Choc- Rain...you know I have rain envy. But you got in a hike between drops...woohoo!

Mary- I am sorry I missed game night! What is corn hole?? You know I am ready for ladder ball any day. But I was not here! We had kids here this past weekend again...lol. This seems to be more of a pattern these days. I too am hoping for a fall crop...but...since we are in an emergency drought...might not be able to. :(

I have been super busy as usual...I have no idea how or why I do this...but haha...I man I know how to make a lot of work for myself.

I think a trip to the crick sounds like just the ticket. Love the sound of water in the stream. Nature sure has magical healing powers from all the modern stresses of eh world.

anyone else ?

Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.

Hey, we also have one of our humming bird feeders right outside our kitchen window. ?.....and yes they are super territorial! Sort of think its a big game though. Just having fun! I personally think they're a lot of fun and I love their energy!

Well Choc we got your rain! More than 2" and still more on the way tonight. Our electricity was knocked out again. Just got it back about 10 minutes ago.

No big moons or shooting stars here tonight. Guess I'll have to observe from the deck again. Snuck down to the creek last night and enjoyed the experience while being mostly submersed in the cool water. Life is good!

Just might go there again before going to bed.

Good night Friends.

I LOVE the "action shot" Wood!! Nice change indeed, Im feeling much warmer seeing you in shorts! (I hear your brain ticking....)
Sorry, I keep forgetting to post a little something each day, I read the posts usually and then I have not allowed anytime for replies or updates!! Ill try to be more present... but know I am always here, not far at all!!

Hummers abound this morning, territorial little buggers that they are--one is having a fit at the others who want to check out the feeder outside the kitchen window. That's where Maui and I both have our feeders, we call ours "Starbucks for Hummers"...it's a fly-thru you know, just sayin'......

Im off to the gym, then a hike, then gardening, then nail appointment and that shoots me back over to the gym for my fun classes- Ujam and spinning. Its a work out day for sure, but the walk will be welcomed as my hikes are more infrequent these days, Im picky about air quality and wont go if its not perfect.

See you all later I hope.... on the deck....Im bringing some yo-yo's.... anyone know how to do "walk the dog"? Have a great day!! ***SNOW*** emoticon

Eventful camping weekend there, Wood! Glad GD survived all that! And even had some fun in the mix...

Ah, supermoon and meteors....missed the meteors, I guess there are 2 more nights to catch the show? At least that's what "Bing" says! The supermoon was still up this morning when I looked out, love a full moon, as long as it lets me sleep.

We have our new bike racks on the car, thanks to Larry! The look like they will last forever, very strong design. It's still a bit tricky getting the inside bike up, but I could do it, so this should work!

Speaking of work, it's back to it for me today...catch you all later for some meteor spotting! (and maybe some of those s'mores?)

Good morning OP!
Had a great weekend! Perfect weather for RVing with gd! But one of those weekends that included a LOT of driving. gd already had weekend plans before we decided to go camping so we said we could do both, camp and bring her back for her activities. Campground was a little over an hours drive away. So here was our weekend.
First drove to the campground in Lancaster on Thursday afternoon. Set up camp, made supper and then went for a bike ride. (We had given gd a 24" bike that I had reconditioned.) gd then proceeded to go too fast down a hill on a paved road that turned into a stone road with a sharp curve. Yep, she wiped out! Resulted in brushburns and stone tattoos! Opps! All was still well with games of Skip-Bo and of course, smores!
Friday we went to a great play called "Dear Edwina" at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater. Really really great kids musical about the issues of growing up. Pure coincidence - turned out that one of her best friends was also there for her birthday and she joined us for the 2nd half of the play. From there we drove home so she could get to one of her events - a Mystery Dinner (which Glor and I helped serve since we were there.) Had some time to kill before the dinner so we went to play miniature golf. gd had flip flops on and managed to get a bee under her toes! Another traumatic event! Attendant got us ice to help recover. Mystery dinner was a success and then back to the campground for more Smores and more Skip-Bo,
Saturday included a trip to a Amish Farm Museum which we all enjoyed, some tennis, more Skip-Bo and then met her family at a local park where we had a picnic and played disc golf! No more traumatic events! She went home with them so she would be able to go to her next event Sunday morning!
Saturday night Glor and I had a quiet evening of campfire and brandy. Ahhhhhh!

Life is good!

hey! Glad I stopped by! I forgot about the super moon and the meteor shower! Great night for a night on the deck to sit back with a couple of friends and take it all in!

Had a great weekend. I'll fill you in more later.

In the meantime, I'd still like to get a quick game in if anyone still wants to play!

Life is good!

Kay I totally agree that it's nice to slow it down and enjoy the view...I got another walk in this morning - again it was hot - then the heavy rains and flash flood warnings came - it's cooler! but still raining gently - quite nice - I got out and gardened a little - I have planted some seeds in cups for a fall crop - I've never attempted fall/winter vegetables - trying some lettuce, peas, okra, tomatoes, peppers. spinach and cucumbers this round...fingers crossed that I will start harvesting in October! Still picking some okra, cukes and tomatoes from summer plants...good luck battling those pesky squirrels!

Was supposed to meet a bunch of friends on the beach this afternoon for some boogie boarding and serious corn hole but that got washed out...

Anybody up for some corn hole and ladderball on the the deck tonight?

Happy Saturday!

We'll be headed to REI soon to pick up our new (and hopefully improved!) bike racks, since the old ones were done in on the last trip...I need some new hiking shoes as well, realized I was hiking on no tread...not quite as grippy!

Been doing a lot of walking lately too, Mary, sometimes it's just the thing. I find I see more when I slow down and start looking! Saw some ducklings at the pond yesterday on the way home, so cute! And some frogs just peeking out of the water right before they swam off.

The squirrels have eaten through one of my tomato cages.... emoticon not sure why they are ignoring the tomatoes that are open and uncaged....dumb squirrels! And I found some tomato horn worms on one of the out-of-cage tomatoes....they are now residing in the garbage can. I have actually managed to harvest about a dozed tomatoes though so far, I am enjoying those!

Wood, hope your GD enjoys her pitching lesson! What a great gift, she's a lucky girl!

Gotta go get me some breakfast....probably oatmeal with fruit, my weekend go-to.

Hey Deckies!

Wow you all have been doing some amazing stuff! I was all smiles reading through your messages - thanks for sharing your stories!

No time for a proper post...closing up shop and heading home to cook dinner...

Only walking for cardio lately (dog days - too hot for much else) so I'm ready to get my heart rate up...how about some country dancing on the deck after dinner?! emoticon Then a dip under the waterfall!

Pura Vita!

Wood... OMG, I never thought of chocolate covered blueberries... Sounds like my next "cooking" project!!! :-)

FINALLY got some outdoor time today... 3 1/2 mile hike this morning, followed by an hour 1/2 kayak paddle at a wildlife refuge (the lake that I saw the eagle & its nest last summer... Saw the nest again but no eagles this time).... Next on today's agenda is mowing my weeds (AKA the "lawn") ... That usually takes a little over an hour, .... Have a feeling I'm going to have some sore muscles by tomorrow, LOL

Still walking upright Maui, although I admit to a sore spot! But then I was da*n busy yesterday. From running to mowing to collecting firewood. ...and yes GD is still playing tennis, but not fanatically. Her big love is softball. In fact, one of her birthday presents from us is pitching lessons from a young friend of mine who happens to be the #3 ranked collegiate softball pitcher 4 years in a row. She'll be thrilled. Wow! Is all I can say to medical improvements. You forgot to factor in attitude which I think works wonders!

Choc - Any chocolate covered blueberries? I would hope so!

and Kay, I do hear you, but I don't always listen well. Blueberry Pecan Pie sounds wonderful!

Any speculation as to why SDL disappeared after her night with Tom Petty?

Life is good!

mmm blueberries....I made a blueberry pecan cake last year that was a big hit with Larry, one pan, really easy. I think it was from Cooking Light if you want to try that recipe.

Maui, wonderful news on those lab tests! Great to know all that healthy living is paying off!

Wood, great that your back is better, whatever the reason. I tend to beat myself up as well, and ignore the pain....but sometimes it's good to take some rest and get some care as well! Have fun camping with the GD too!

And thanks for the pillows on Monday, the headache went away by morning, must have been the chamomile?

The rain cleared out today, we had 2 days of rain, very rare for summer in Nevada! Maui and Snow, did you all see any of that?

Meeting with the trainer again tomorrow, my wrist is feeling much better after taking a few weeks off entirely and then cutting back for a couple of weeks as well. So we'll see how that goes!

So what kind of wine goes with blueberry muffins?

Maui... Yup on freezing the blueberries... So easy, just spread them out one layer thick on cookie sheets , stick those in the freezer overnight and then store the frozen berries in ziplock bags (I don't wash them until I'm ready to thaw them out and use them for baking ... The skins of the berries seem to stay more tender that way... Plus the farm I get them from does all organic growing methods.... already have eaten lots (while I was picking them as well as the muffins I just made... Love love love blueberries!!!)

Hahaha...watched the video...tee hee...

Wood- good to hear you got out on the bike and your back was feeling fine after! Great news.
And a camping weekend with Gd turning 10...perfect. IS she still playing tennis?

Choc- Blueberries! Yum! Do you freeze them? This week I have been working on Tomatillos ,onions, peppers for Chili Verde. This this season...lol. We still have tomatoes too...no more fruit though.

Kay- Migraine went away I hope!

My labs Wood was mentioning are a continuation of my testing ...routine , just a little off schedule. But after several years of no processed food, and all organic, no hormones or antibiotics, slow fermented organic grains , all organic , non GMO, pastured, yada yada...making my own toothpaste, laundry soap, lol...Crazy I know. But...I have had yet another doc asking me, "how'd you do this?" and he is now testing my thyroid more...
I think this whole Idea of diluting my exposure is helping my autoimmune inflammatory condition. My bone density is up! My cholesterol risk is the lowest possible, sugars perfect hemoglobin, iron, hematocrit all optimal ...now thyroid is showing a shift to healthier as well...weird. (Thyroid is not supposed to do this)

So , Now they are checking all my antibody levels ...and will be repeating labs for awhile to see if I continue this trend.

Now...I think I'll head over for some blueberries! Superfood that they are! Waterfall is nice today. Just sayin.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Wood... No blueberry pie (yet) but I did just bake some blueberry muffins with some fresh berries that I just picked at that farm today ... Guessing we could put some ice cream on your muffin instead of pie? I'll leave some of these muffins and also a big bowl of fresh blueberries right here by the waterfall on the deck... Help yourself everyone, there's enough for all (between last Monday and today I've picked and frozen about 14 pounds of big fresh locally grown blueberries... Should last me awhile!)

Love! Love! Love! Blueberry Pie! With ice cream, of course!

Why the back pain? I don't spend too much time trying to figure it out. A couple of reasons, I guess. First of all, I've had back issues since I was 18. Over all those years, I expect it. Although I will say that as most of you know it got extreme a few years and I got it operated on and after that I've had a couple of real good years. Second reason I don't spend much time on the "why" of it, is I simply don't baby myself. In fact, I'm probably fairly self abusive. LOL! I refuse to let my age and my body stop me from doing the things I love. Fortunately, I have an excellent chiropractor (I can hear you thinking Maui!) who usually gets me back together again. Saw him Monday night. Put 38.5 miles on the bike yesterday! And felt good afterward! Still okay this morning as well. Will go out for a run in an hour or so.

Yeah, I liked that "Nevada pin striping as well. Never heard that before.

Maui - Glad the medical reports look good!

Snow - Did you melt?

SDL - Well? How was Tom Petty?

Finally only a 7 % chance of a shower yesterday! Got it on the way home from biking last evening! LOL! Pretty good show of electricity.

Taking one of my granddaughters camping this weekend. She turns 10 next week. So will try to get my yard work done today.

Live! Love! Laugh!

Oh, one more thing: here's a quote from the book I just finished reading (3rd book from the "The Walk" series by Richard Paul Evans.) "Once you have opened the book to another's life, the cover never looks the same." Thought of some of you here on the deck and how we've opened the books of our lives to each other. Just sayin!

Of course I know where the pillows are. Here I got one that is impregnated with camille. That should help you relax and release that headache. I think I'm going to hit the sack as well. Good night kay. Hope for painfree day tomorrow.

Oh no! How does one have a bike rack self-destroy Kate? Glad you were able to do a MacGyver and got the bikes home safely.
It sounds to me that you and Larry enjoy life just about as much as Gloria and I do. Life is good!
Glad you're always there to share a glass of wine or two with.

Today will be mostly cleaning up the boat, the SUV and putting stuff away. Need to get some exercise in as well, but still have some back issues.

Have a great Monday everyone!

Well, Larry and I were reviewing our trip in the hot tub, so I can sprinkle in some highlights. The road to the Mt Humphries trail head did in our bike rack, and Larry ended up tying the bikes together on top of the car with tent guy lines and parts of hiking poles for more stability so we could make it back out on the bumpy dirt road! But the Subaru did fine, even if it did end up with what the Subaru dealer called "Nevada pin striping". (lines all down the sides from scrapes with sage brush and what not...)

We did one technical climb together (all 3 of us) which Larry and I had done part of before, Crystal Crag in Mammoth lakes. www.mountainproject.com/v/north-arte

We did this route to the top, then the ridgeline across. When Larry and I did this in June we went down before the South summit and the rest of the ridgeline, but since we had an earlier start this time, we ended up doing the entire ridgeline, really nice rock, beautiful scenery and a great day! Ended up with some beer tasting and Mexican food for dinner, which made it a long day/night! But fun....

We've been having thunrderstoms here too, Wood! Maybe you sent them my way? The sky has been grey all day, although I was able to finish cleaning my car (inside and out!) It looks much nicer now, back to blue instead of grey and dirt colored!

I ended up walking in the park this afternoon, Larry took his bike out for a spin too, just never did see the sun today....

SDL enjoy Tom Petty!

Charity sounds like a nice rest day for you!

Mary, did you get in your strength training? I've decided to cut back on mine a bit, 4 days a week is just getting to be too much...and I'm not enjoying it as well, so time to try something new. I did a power type yoga today, and I'll go Tues and Thurs to the gym (I meet with the trainer again on Thurs-at least that's the plan!).

But I hear there is wine tonight? Who's pouring? emoticon

Got back from our annual week of nonstop activity with my family in Canada! With 11 of us staying in a modest 3 bedroom house things do tend to get a little hectic, but it sure is fun! Let's see we fished, swam (even though it was cool and the pool water was frigid!), boated, kayaked, canoed, went for hikes, went for a picnic at the locks, went out for ice cream twice (again all 11 0f us), ate too much (and drank just as much) and played games every night until midnight (well the adults did. put the kids to bed around 9:30) Only downfall was the weather. Had thunderstorms for part of the day every single day except Friday! But then again we saw the sun at least briefly every day as well!

We to home last evening and guess what, more thunder storms! Guess what its doing here now. Yep more thunder storms! I'm beginning to feel like we're now part of the rain forest! I know, I know. You West Coast people would love to share some of these storms with us.

Mary, I agree "this is living"! Love your sign off on your posts!

SDL - You had a date with Tom Petty? Wow! I am impressed! Tell us all about it! He might be a bit old for you, but hey, I'm certainly not judging! I'll bet that would be a blast!

Okay, I'll join all of you by the waterfall and then I'd like to hear more about your trip Kay, and your hikes, Charity and SDL, do you need any help moving tomorrow? And Snow and Maui, where are you two?

Life is good!

SD I'll meet you at the waterfall after your TP concert so you can tell me all about it! I'm so jealous! He is one of the best writers of 3 minute pop-songs ever! Amazing that he's still churning them out!

Charity so happy you're having some wonderful summer days! Really enjoyed your blog!

Slipped outside between rain showers and got in a 3 minute jog...trying to pump myself up to do some strength training now...still struggle with that but I'm not giving up!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Quiet day at home today. Well..the Hubby and I did do a quiet, gorgeous walk down some country dirt roads and meadows. Lovely. Then I simply laid aournd in the back yard enjoying the sunshine while he went to a movie with our eldest son. Been playing in the kitchen this evening and am getting ready to do my nails.

A lazy summer day. Every once in awhile those hit the spot! :)

SD - I did complete the hike yesterday. It was the toughest hike I've ever done. I was too tired to blog about it last night. Too burned out today. LOL! Not sure I'll hike for a week or so. I like to do fitness stuff outside as much as possible in Alaska. Winters are too long to spend anymore time than necessary indoors. But since I try to adventure every day outside in the summer, I'm running out of hiking and biking trails that can be done in a half day or less. I think I'm gonna have to hit the water and add that to my list of activities

Mary, what a step! My friend's son just turned 18 and still has no desire to get his license. Now he's joining the military. I have a friend who didn't get his license until he was 38 and retired from the military. How crazy is that?!

Charity, enjoy your day prepping for DH! I hope you get out to that peak again! I read your blog. What a hike! Amazing!

I am just enjoying the first weekend in what seems like forever when I have zero responsibilities. My only plans are Tom Petty on Sunday night. :-) I'm just taking this time to relax before I start the unpacking process on Monday!

SDL, hope the interview went well, you move in on Monday? Did I get that right? Exciting times!

Mary, emoticon Glad you are cooling down! We've been pretty warm here, and even though it does cool a bit in the evenings, it's still HOT out there, especially when the sun it shining... emoticon

Last couple of evenings we've been serenaded by the local coyotes...also saw a few baby ducks in the pond the other day, so cute! emoticon

ad a fabulous day yesterday. Took on a challenging climb of Hatch Peak (elevation 4811). Required some rock scrambling at the end that challenged my fear of heights and then I continued past the peak on the ridge for about another quarter mile that had drop offs on both sides. It was scary and satisfying at the time. It makes me feel alive when I push past my self-limits.

Today is about preparing for the husband returning home after his two week shift (he works at a remote location in the oil fields). I'll be doing some housework and grocery shopping, He doesn't get in until late tonight and I don't have to do the airport run as he left a car in town. So...I should have time to go back up to Hatcher's Pass as I want to do Fish Peak. I started that climb on the way home but lost my cell phone and had to turn back to find it. I hate to not finish a climb and it's gonna bug me till I get back there and bag that one.

You can see pictures of yesterday's climb on my blog.

Hope everyone is making the most of these last summer days. So fleeting....

Charity that really does sound yummy! emoticon I need to prepackage stuff this weekend for next week. My nutrition has been a train wreck this week. emoticon

SD I hope your interview went great!!!!!

My life is going to change in 4 days. DS turns 15 1/2 which means if he passes his road test on Tuesday he will be able to drive during the day without an adult in the car...oh boy...I'm so ready (right now I spend 3 or more hours a day transporting him so it will give me lots more time to get other things done)...but I am going to be so nervous when he's on the interstate without me!

Hope everyone has a great Friday! Party on the deck tonight?!

Pura Vida! emoticon

Charity, that sounds delicious!

Mary, I'm glad things are cooling down where you are. The humidity is finally starting to burn off here after some rain on Sunday. I am so grateful!

Spent the morning finishing up cleaning the house. I have a phone interview for an awesome job here in a half hour, then it's off to work to pay with kiddos for a few hours!

Spent yesterday at the local UPick Farm. I got:rhubarb, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, romaine, spinach, napa cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, purple kale, green kale and kohlrabi.

I spent the better part of the evening processing it all. I juiced most of the greens, added in some other ingredients such as frozen blueberries, flax, chia, protein powder, etc and poured it into individual containers. I have my green smoothies all pre-made for the week now.

I also made Hot-Spicy-Sour Faux German Potato Salad using cauliflower instead of potatoes and it's amazing how delicious it is!

The weather is starting to turn here in Alaska. Fall will be just around the corner for us. Not terribly thrilled about that, but it's our reality.
