Good morning deckies!

Kay - Sounds like Larry has a great plan! Hope the ski was fantastic and the knee is better!
I just looked at closing date for Heavenly and it's April 24 - wow - you've got a lot of skiing left this season! we had dinner Friday night with sil from SF and she was asking if we were going skiing this year - hubby said probably not because son's spring break is so late (April 10-14) but we may have to rethink that - especially if son gets into any west coast schools - might have to do a college visit/ski vacay over spring break...

So sorry to hear about your brother and sister's diagnoses...how are they doing?

I had my first colon check last year and was lucky enough to get the "come back in 10 years" report - eating 2 pounds of veggies a day must have something to do with it - plus I'm lucky and have no family history...hubby has to go back in 3...

Maui - You give your friend the credit but I'm sure you were a very big part of making all those children safer!!! So glad you are having such a wonderful visit and the weather is cooperating!!! Wildflowers - beautiful!!! Azaleas in full bloom here...this used to not happen until April...yep, I'm working on soil too - I have a sample in my car that I intended to take to the local Clemson extension for testing last week - hopefully I'll get it there tomorrow...the soil looks so good and drains so well that it's tempting just to pop some stuff down in it but I know I can make it better so I should do my homework!

Choc - Any more hikes? Did your weather cool down?

Jo - Thanks for popping by and letting us know you're ok just busy!

Went out on the boat yesterday and when I went to put the cover back on it this morning I found that the jack collapsed overnight so we've got an unexpected project to deal with...always something!

Have a great Sunday! Windows are opened here and birds are singing loudly!

Pura vida!

Yep, my brother and youngest sister were both diagnosed w/ rectal/colon cancer last year...so I'm now supposed to get one every 3 years...and my last was about 3 years ago! Better safe than sorry, and the preventive care is still free, for now!

And I've been icing my injury...and tens...I'm going to test it skiing today, we'll see how that goes!

Maui, glad you got out hiking with your friends, and wildflowers too! I don't think we'll see those for a while, we still have a blanket of snow on the ground, although what fell yesterday morning melted away pretty quickly, the accumulation from last week is taking a bit more time. But with all this moisture, I imagine once spring hits, we'll be awash in blooms! I think I even planted some bulbs last fall, it' will be interesting to see if they come up! I got ones that say the squirrels don't care for.

Jo, sometimes life gets busy, so no worries on not stopping by! glad you are good in your part of the world!

Good Morning Deckies!

Yay...it was a 4th day in a row with no rain ...and...I got into the hills to hike! Kay, did the loop I took you on...
I had guests here, they used to live in the area, but have retired to Oregon.
The husband had worked with my, and directly with my children and likely a thousand others in the 4H program. Great man, He worked with me to develop a firearm safety program here in our county and throughout the state. Countless children are safer, because of him. Anyhow, he was down for a visit, the weather cooperated. We got out hiking and wildflower hunting. A perfect perfect day.

Mary- hehe...lucky dogs in your area!!!! Animals know how to find trusted kindness...
Photos...yep.....soil and sunlight, foundation to any garden.
we have had 2 very cold nights...but sunny days, I hope my little seeds are still working on germinating. (Carrots and beets)...the baby cabbage plants seem to be fine. Lots of flowers on the fava beans...need pollinators!
Next week I hope.

Kay- Hey...cool cool temps! You too?
Dr Larry will see in Seattle. Hmmm Dr Earnest U. Chappie Conrad? (Leilani had a world renowned great ortho rebuilt for her leg) Amazing special man, saved her leg. In the ortho world Seattle is doing some of the most state of the art work. I wish Larry the best.

Choc- Gosh , hehe...sounds like you have really gotten in the miles. Learning the new trails...nice! So, were you able to get some yard work done before the storms roll back in? You are getting some winter back, right?

Kelpie- we are thinking about you...hope you are feeling some recovery and have a easy easy flight. Big hugs.

Life is good.

Get out if you can.
(Rain returns tomorrow)

Nice work on the dog catching, and reuniting with their owners, Mary! Also, good idea to take pictures of your garden area, smart planting can only help the growing process!

My latest dilemma is a knee injury (pulled muscle?) doing box jumps last night. Dr Google seems to indicate it's the sartorius muscle, as it hurts when bending and lifting my leg. At least it's OK walking. The open started on Thursday (I did this last year as well) so I did the workout last night, and my third set of box jumps my knee started hurting...well the muscle on the inside/back/upper part. It's been bugging me for about a week, and now it's really complaining! I'm going with hot tub, naproxen, ice, tens, etc. No more naproxen for the rest of the week though, I'm off NSAIDS in prep for a colonoscopy on Friday.... emoticon The trials and tribulations...

Good morning Deckies!

I don't think I've mentioned that my part-time job is neighborhood dog-catcher...I caught a very large very lovely shepherd last month who had no collar...I posted a sign - the next day my neighbor 4 doors down (who is also a neighborhood dog-catcher!) called to say she knew the owner...well just now I saw large mix-breed dog wandering around my backyard so I grabbed Harry's leash and headed out...she was very shy so I had to follow her into a field across the street...after quite a bit of sweet talking (telling her what a good, pretty girl she is) she started wagging and allowed me to attach the leash...as I was walking her back to my house a woman was walking toward me...she had accidentally let the dog escape while she was cleaning the house of my neighbor who reunited the shepherd with his owner...The shepherd is Kane, today's dog is Lucy, a Jack Russell I caught years ago was named Martini and he lived over a mile away...can't recall other names but there have been quite a few more...

Dog catching and sun-catching today...this is the first morning I've been home with the sun shining brightly in quite some time so every 30 minutes or so I'm out in the yard taking pictures so I can figure out which areas get the most sunlight...my plan may to to move containers around on days that I'm here to maximize sun exposure - and get a bit of a workout!

OK time to go take another round of pictures...

Have a wonderful day!

Pura vida!

Great getting out there with the hiking, planting, tutoring! Kelpie, hope you feel better before you have to fly, aren't you supposed to catch the cold on the plane, not before? emoticon

Larry's waiting for a consult from a doc up in Seattle, he does a particular procedure no one else does, and supposedly good results for active folks. So, it's a wait and see.

The dog in the video looked a lot like my dog, but if she was only 10 pounds, not quite the same, Kali was more like 20 or so...but when she was shaggy she looked a lot like that!

Hi all... BOY, am I far behind on all the happenings here on the deck! Skimmed through a few posts I've missed, noticed the comments on rescue puppies..., all of my dogs (and cats) over the years have been "rescues" and all were (and are) AWESOME pets! The rescue dog I have now has been with me nine years (she's ten now and almost totally blind but still gets around pretty well.... hoping she'll be with me even longer & even though she's really showing her age she's a GREAT dog)

Been unusually warm here in Michigan for February... past week high 50's to mid 60's... which is one reason I've been "MIA" on the deck... been doing LOTS of hiking on nearby State Game Area trails (a couple friends have been showing me around since I just moved here last year & am still learning where the "good" hikes are)..., looks like our weather will be changing back to more normal winter temps starting this weekend so that may slow down the hiking a bit....

Gotta go do some yard work while it's still daylight out... will try to catch up on posts I've missed later...
Choc emoticon

Good morning all!

Kelpie, Breakfast yum! Thank you!!! I have fresh bread to contribute, with some our our local honey. Great nutrition and yumminess to start out day!
We are on my street doing just fine.My friends' house is ok. She is down in San Diego on the beach. good for her. My yard, especially fine, albeit 'here come the weeds'. lol...Of course. I started the day before coffee and breakfast pulling a few. Spent 2 hours yesterday on the task...it ought to be a doozy of a year for weeds.
Puppy video...yes...wonderful story. Rescue seems the way to go. A rescue would fit right in here on the deck.
Turtles...last I heard they went to spend winter with Slimmer, I think they loved it so they stayed !
Oh my, J's cellar...my goodness...make me swoon. Of course I remember all the goodness. Treated us like royalty or long lost family. Spoiled beyond recognition.
Oh my...get better fast! Darn darn darn! Travelling with a cold can be such a challenge too...Hugs hugs hugs!
Seems the weather is goofy everywhere, we have apparently surpassed a 100yr record for rainfall. Wow.

Mary-Yes yes ....time just flies by so darn fast. I try try try to get that list done...my gooness, then time gets away. (Yes...I still write lists) 50 parties...yay...how fun. Busy day, rewarding and fun. How are your rototilling muscles??
Garden planning...oh yes..always evolving. Yesterday I planted some marigolds here and there to ward off bugs (Since they ought to be a challenge this year. I also plated some snap peas here and there (like at the end of the carrot box, end of turnip box...)
I think this is part of what I enjoy about the veggie garden...keep learning, trying , experimenting, dreaming...nothing is that huge a loss if it doen't work. You quickly get to do a re-do!

CS- Do you have snow and cold???? I have a friend arriving tomorrow, HE and his wife want to hiking about...haha...It's a gonna be muddy!

Kay- Saw on the news this morning Mt Rose has a new snowfall record...her ridiculous numbers...and cooler temps now...
What's the update on Larry's shoulder?? When will he know?

Jo- Can you see a glimmer of spring on it's way?

Choc- Another hike today? You are really getting the miles done. You must be feeling wonderful with these warmer temps...what a head start you are getting toward your Alaska trip.

Welp...today...will be a weeding day.
Breakfast is in...coffee finished...
Hugs all around...
I am off!

Whoops falling a wee bitty behind!

Spent yesterday largely in bed as I'm fighting off some sort of bug. And I'm due a visit to see the gdd's and parents so don't want to bring unwanted extras with me.

And this morning helped J make some paté. He and his chums made masses of sausages and saucissons yesterday. Maui, remember them hanging in the cellar.

I actually make the yogurt myself, in the same oven that we slow cooked the lamb in. When it's too hot we can do it just sitting on the bench. Works well.

Rescue puppy? emoticon How will it get on with the turtles, haven't heard about them for a while. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon My daughter has a rescue, it is largely border collie, and I think a collie would do us very well. And not just cos they often come from Scotland emoticon emoticon Boundless energy, and also a working dog......

Maiu, how are things settling down with you? After the storm and rain? Was your friend's house ok?

Kay, ankle better? Snow still on the deck?

Mary, isn't it lovely to have a place we can do the things we can't manage elsewhere....

Choc, and Jo, all well with you?

Cap, is it cold enough?

We are having very strange weather here. In the UK it has gone from the hottest to a named storm bringing snow. I'm hoping the storm will have passed over as I fly into the UK tomorrow, and I am not one of the best travelers in the world. Been stretchered off rather too many planes.

So may be MIA over the next week or so.

I've stocked up on the staples for breakfast, meusli, yogurt, coffee, jam..... just bring along some sourdough, and we should be fine.

Have a great day everybody

Hey all!

Loved the sing-along - haha, the only place I can sing is on deck! Trust me

Kay/Maui I love the rescue dog idea but only if it's as beautiful as the rescue my niece in N.H. adopted a couple of months ago...his name is Newton...I haven't met him yet but I just love him to pieces!

Maui - my goodness, my plans for my garden change every day - hopefully it will all work out - for sure I'll focus on things I've had good success with in the past first then if those are going well I may challenge myself with other stuff...

Capt - sending emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon thoughts your way!!!

Kelpie - enjoy your house guests! Loved the peaches and yogurt!

Choc, Jo, everyone else...y'all doing ok???

Pura vida!

Woke up to a deck covered in snow this morning...so CS, you are welcome to some of that! How would you like to have that delivered? I was expecting rain only, so a bit surprise to see all the white.

Kelpie, sorry about the soup! Sushi sounds like a good replacement though. emoticon

Morning Deckies!

Kelpie- On my home made yogurt from local dairy...in your neck of teh woods this means something! I saw those cows...lounging in beautiful grasses...my goodness...happy cows! Yes please...fruit and yogurt for me! Thank you!

Kay- Yep...water water everywhere! Glad you made it to class and getting to catch up with friends...yay. OK...yoga today...good balance. You are always mindful of your cross training. Good good.

CS- OK...yes yes...sure hope you get the colder weather. sheesh...you'd have thought it'd be a safe time to plan for snow...global warming? Yes...taking a chance sometimes is scary. One of my favorite times was when we met Wood in Kauai! Seriously...we planned a 2 week vaca with peeps we had never met in person! We planned a meet up vaca...one of the best things I have ever done...haha...great experience. Taking Risks...a key to a good life.
Glad the blister didn't slow you down...whew.

Choc- you out hiking again??? Is it still silly warm for you too??

Mary- well...sounds like you made it home after your crazy adventure day. And now tilling! Woohoo! Good for you. Yep...good way to get sore. Feels great though. Such an exciting time to till and prepare the soil for gardening. What ya gonna plant?
Great you were able to join us on the Ben Frien Hike with Kelpie. It always makes for a good good day. The slide back down was fabulous.

Okie dokie...I am off...I need to go check on a friends' property for her today. She is out of town and somebody needs to check for storm damage.
Back later.

I think tonight...lets make a winter bon fire. Songs? Fire! Friends! I'll bring my guitar...where is Dan these days???? Hello! Dan! I could use another guitar along with me.
Voices ready???
Maybe some good ol folks songs tonight.

'This land is your land...

Hi All! The blister seems to be all better, thanks for asking. It didn't slow me down much. I skied Saturday and Monday, and it was awesome.

Maui, that's a great story! Thanks for sharing. I love those kinds of adventures that just pop up if you are willing to take a (safe) chance on spontaneity.

Now, if you don't mind, could you all send prayers and good vibes for cooler weather in my neck of the woods. I have a friend flying in for a long weekend of skiing this weekend, but the weather is supposed to be warm and rainy. That just won't do! So if you don't mind sending some cool-minded, Snow Miser, the-groundhog-saw-his-shadow vibes my way, I'd really appreciate it! emoticon emoticon

Hey Kay! So glad you're well above that rising creek and got to see so many friends!

I attempted (twice) to post via phone earlier but neither seemed to make it through...if they do manage to burst through the cloud you may end up seeing a triple post from me...oh well...

Stay dry and enjoy your yoga in the morning!

emoticon emoticon emoticon The creek is running high, thank goodness we are well above it! I imagine the 2x4 I found down there yesterday to fashion into a bridge is gone by now! I did make it to CrossFit though, the 9:30 class was quite full, all the usual 4:30 folks headed in early! It was nice to see all my friends!

Back to work for me tomorrow...but I'll have my Budokon yoga class first, so that will be nice.

Yes Kelpie!

Ben Frien - what a wonderful mind-clearing hike!

Hope you don't mind that I turned my fruit salad into a smoothie so I could enjoy it on the go! Thank you!

I'll be sore tomorrow! I rented a small tiller for 4 hours and wore myself and it out - had to refuel 4 times but once that last tank was out I was out of gas too and it was time to return my rented friend!

Hope you all had a great day!

(Maui I must confess I have been unplugged from news all day - hoping for the best when I check out your weather situation.)

As usual train was late - this is why I leave my car at station otherwise hubby or son are on call for hours...& yes I do get confused - tonight when I got in my car my bike wasn't in the back where it normally lives just in case a ride opportunity pops up in my day...then I remembered I rode it to mom's emoticon More skiing - awesome! Glad blister isn't keeping you off the slopes!

Maui - oh my how frightening your weather is...rain & high winds with everything already so hyper-saturated...it was the right time to repurpose that wonderful tree...will be thinking about you and CA...stay safe!!!

That Neily story is SO COOL! Haha my mom had a 1960 bug which she drove until 1970 and my first car was a yellow 1977 bug convertible!

That soup sure was good...full & tired now...think I'll put some N.Y. music on in the treehouse (softly) and climb into a hammock...ahhhh

Pura vida!

Thanks for sharing your Neily story, Maui! What a fun time! And I'm glad you took care of the redwood too, bittersweet, but at least it didn't do any damage when it came down, and supplied you with lots of mulch and some lumber too?

Kelpie, thanks for the great breakfast! I can't say I blame you for skipping the skiing, I don't think I'd be much up for night skiing either!

Mary, quite the logistic problem you have there, I think I'd have to write it down to remember where to be and when and with which vehicle! emoticon

I saw the sun today! emoticon So I hit the trail for a bit, cut it short because my wireless headphone battery ran out, and I thought I'd just head up and get different headphones but ended up cutting it short instead. Still, it was a nice walk, if a bit short and a little muddy!

I made a potato leek soup if anyone's interested... emoticon

Wow wow wow!

Kelpie- Thank you! Foraged mushrooms, bacon, eggs...breakfast ...what a powerhouse way to start the day! My goodness...Love, love, love...I'll add a wee bit of home made sourdough walnut bread and slice of cheese.

Mary-ack! Sorry about teh cold and feeling so icky...I am eating my sauerkraut and taking Vit D, got my flu vaccine, washing my hands silly, running when I hear a cough when I am out! (Yea...a little OCD)...goes with the territory in my world.
Garden ,in boxes...researching...hehe...yep. Always so many questions. I now have a journal book for every box...haha...This way I write down every little thing I do...maybe this way I can get 'smart' in my little brain. I had one journal I was writing in...bleh...This one book per box...MUCH better idea!
Companion planting...yep...I want to get better at this. Tucking things in little nooks a crannies. Things Like celery helps keeps cabbage moths away from cabbage family! Yeppp...good plan! Your schedule looks BUSY! What a puzzle of a Day! Lucky Mom.
Awww...senior year antics ...deep breaths...smile and enjoy.

CS- On my...how the foot/toe blister this morning. Little things can be such set back and annoying.
Yes...a lot of rain here...for us anyhow.
M boxes have highly amended soil with compost etc...so they drain well in this rain...good thing. My native soil is clay...so there is a good amount of puddling in some areas. Good thing we got the front landscaping project done, because with all teh root removal we did, rototilling and amendment out there before planting, that ground is also absorbing mu better than it would have before the work...whew!

Kay- glad the ankle is OK...sheesh...little things right. But you keep pressing onward, inspirational gal you! I have been fighting with my r foot the last couple months. I wear orthodics for a 30 year old neuroma. Its been letting me know its there. Bought new boots, shoes, but had to go see the doc anyhow. He mad an adjustment on the orthodic...helped the neuroma...caused pain in my plantar fascia...lolol...life! I'll keep at it. Oh well...
Big storm tonight...you gonna get snow????

Cold cold here...big storm prep again.
I must say for all those who help my hand during our redwood tree saga...my goodness...So so many trees have come down this winter...road closures, so much damage from trees...wow...I am so glad I pushed hard to make this gut wrenching change to take that huge tree down...now...feeling blessed/ My goodness.

Song of the day...Neil young. You know, I got to meet Neily when he was just about that year. He had purchased his land, was driving in the local mts, in our 1966 Volkswagen bug, and old man was stopping folks along the road, asking if we wanted to drive on in and hear some music, eat some spaghetti, share in the evening with his friend. My bf and I were a little leery...but went in. Sat on hay bales, and listened to Neil young with about 40 other folks. haha...random life goodness. Neil has always loved the outdoors, using his fame to work to protect the environment. So today, I honor Neily. (Later my bf got a dog, a yellow lab, we called named him Neily. ;) That bf went on to live in Tahoe. HE and his wife have no children, but they have dedicated their lives to protecting the environmental needs of the lake Tahoe basin.

What a wonderful breakfast emoticon emoticon emoticon !!!

Thanks Kelpie!

Busy but good here...had a great day yesterday - mostly in the garden - not as productive as I should have been - way too many possibilites and questions whirl through my little brain that cause me to stop and "google" - slows down the physical work but I'm trying very hard to have a well thought out productive space this year! But first priority is taking good care of the seedlings I have going so far! And taking good care of myself - finally shaking the cold - hubby's still in the midst of his battle - worst either of us have felt in quite a while - logged my food yesterday and today - woohoo I'm on a 2 day spark streak!

Maui - Companion crops in containers is one thing I've been researching!

I want to post more to each of you but today is Bobble transport day - so first I will ride my bike to her home (8 miles), get her car and drive back here then drive my car to train station (10 miles in the other direction) leave my car there and have hubby follow and bring me home - then later I'll drive to mom's, we'll go to lunch, I'll drive her to her other house (90 minutes) take her grocery shopping, leave her and her car there and hop the train back at 6 pm...

and in between all that I may be helping son launch boat...he slept out again so haven't seen him yet today...

Ok...off I go emoticon have a great Sunday everyone!

Pura vida!

Maui, glad to "see" you. What crazy weather! And there are still climate change deniers! I had heard on the news that the worst storm was heading your way, so stay safe.
J's knee is wear and tear and arthritis. He'll need a replacement, but he wants it to be later rather than sooner. It was an injection (cortisone?) that is causing the pain at the moment. He has had them before, and the previous week on the other knee gave immediate relief. Not this one. He's still sleeping, thankfully, sleep is often the best medicine.
And yes, the lake we ate beside..... his fishing grounds are not far offshore from that restaurant.
And I'm sure we can find you some crumbless calorie free croissants!
Companion crops, let us know how that goes. J is thinking about what to plant too.... more aubergines (eggplant) and less cucumbers.
I'll join you in the hot tub. We have the big bath here, but it was nive hanging out with my friend after the aqua sessions. There is still the sauna and the Turkish bath. Do we have those here?

Captain, how's the blister. I hate them. Mind you, I once got one infected and ended up having antibiotic injections for a week, so take care of yourself now.

Kay, I didn't take my skis last night. I haven't been on them for a while, so night skiing for a first outing didn't seem like a great idea. Especially with my Adies...... I need dark glasses because of the bright lights, but can't see properly in the shadows! And the advice to Captain goes for you too... take care of yourself!

Choc, how are you? It's a lovely day here today, however, gym for me, as J has to see his siblings and then we are invited to his son's for lunch. The walks close to the house are fine, but I know them so well. And I don't want to take the car to go for a walk on my own.

Jo, still busy with the family? And outages? Like Maui my own granddaughters are a long way away, however, I have J's to compensate at times. And I'll be seeing my two E's next weekend!

Mary, another one busy with the family and outdoors?

Any one I've missed, sorry. Consider yourself hugged (and those I didn't miss can have a hug too)

Breakfast this morning? OK, it's the weekend, home cured bacon, fresh eggs from my sdil's hens, foraged mushrooms..... how does that sound!

Have a great Sunday everybody

I have a long weekend too, Captain, been off since Thursday...enjoying the rest!

The ankle is fine, thanks for asking, gals! But my lats and triceps are sore...from Weds CrossFit or Thursday yoga? or both? I took Friday as a rest day, just because!

Still not good ski weather, they were open today, but recommended striding rather than skating (we don't have striding skis...) so I was OK that we didn't get out. We'll see what tomorrow's weather is like, but I don't see sun in the forecast until Thursday! So, maybe no skiing for me until next weekend.

Maui, 7 inches in the wheelbarrow...wow!

Kelpie, kiwis and apples sound great! Count me in!

Hi All,

Sorry I've been MIA, I've just been fairly busy...and have been getting lots of outdoor time! emoticon I went for a short hike last night on the way home, and then I was skiing all day today. Too bad I didn't change into my sneakers for my hike, though, because now I have a blister right on the inside ball of my foot--you know, right where you need to pressure for skiing! It made today's outing interesting, to be sure. I hope it heals by Monday, when I'm supposed to be out all day again. (I'm taking tomorrow off as a rest/healing day and to avoid some of the President's Day weekend crowds.)

Kay, thank you for the snowshoe advice. I will try that!

Choc, I'm enthused by your hikes, and can't wait for the longer days, so I can get out (after work) more as well.

Kelpie, you are always so positive and uplifting. It's great to have you here.

Maui, I hope you stay dry! I can't imagine all that rain at once can be good for your garden, even after it's been so dry for so long. Will it affect your crops badly?

Hope you all have a great rest of the weekend!

Howdy Deckies!

Haha...drought drought drought drought...rain rain rain rain rain! Choc, you got that right! Wow...So so much rain. My wheel barrow had 7 inches in it from yesterday morning to this morning. I know its not official, cause of how it grabs the rain with wider sides...but what the heck...its a LOT of water in there!

And Monday's storm is supposed to be the worst of the season...hahaha...

OK...al my little seedling are ok so far! hehe. Seeds are swelling with the rain...so soon the carrots and beets should be up...later in the week.

Kelpie- I must tell you how seeing you here , oh so good for my soul right now. I know we all have our times of life's challenges...you have had more than your share.. But your smiling face, caring spirit, knowledge and grace...lucky us/me.
Sophro today...good good! Gotta take care of us, right?
The lake! The lake we went too?? Such memories...
Ah...we too are heading into the jars...had oatmeal with jarred peaches. I did a set of jars this past summer with zero sugar...my goodness...yummy! Perfect on oatmeal with almond slices and cinnamon.
Kiwis and apples...yesyesyes! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad about J knee...is this a constant ache? Prognosis?
Sorry I missed the croissants... :P
Terrible they took away your hot tub at the gym...darn! Frustrating, when we find something that works, then loose access. I bet it was good for the old injuries. Do you have any leads on another option?

Kay- Ack! How's the ankle now?? I hate it when I do something like that! Good you skipped to evaluate better. And Larry...oh my...this aging challenge eh? You two keep working at this and are an inspiration as are many here on the Deck!
Wow...what a weather week for everyone...wow wow wow.

Choc- I am so enjoying all your hikes, gym etc...you have kept it up long enough to start feeling energized. After the first couple weeks the body stops complaining so much eh? Gosh as spring comes...you are gonna hit the ground running!

I have been reading about companion crops this week...planning on tucking in this n that in my boxes. Like...did you know cabbages like to grow with celery?? Well...OK then! Hehe...always so much to learn.

Any lurkers out there? Stop by and say hi! Those of you, who used to be regulars...you are missed...you know who you are. Jump in! The waters' fine.

I'll be hanging out in the hot tub today...its a place where we can dream, share, relax and learn to live a healthier more gratifying life. So join us! When you are able.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

How's the ankle now Kay?

Another flyby for me. It's my monthly sophrology meeting, and I can do with it! Jacques is off fishing on the lake. Rather him than me, as although it is lovely and sunny, it is rather cold too!

We're getting to the last of the kiwis and apples, then we'll have to eithr buy some fruit, or eat up the ones in jars...... Jacques doesn't put too much sugar in with them so should be ok.

Still no oven, so no baking.

So kiwis and apples for breakfast?

Maybe catch you all later....

Sounds like you have good hiking weather, Choc, can't say I blame you for skipping the gym for a nice hike! I had a massage yesterday, kind of feel like skipping out on my CrossFit today as well, just still sore from Wednesday! So I'm just going to see how I feel.

Kelpie, thanks for brekkie! Crumb-free and calorie-free, can't beat that!

Kay... sorry about your ankle, glad the injury wasn't too serious & hope it's feeling better today!

Kelpie....Crumb free & calorie free croissants! Yummy way to start the day

Going to skip the gym today in favor of another hike in a local state park... watching a beautiful sunrise right now & its supposed to be fairly warm today (mid 50's in February is "warm" LOL) so I'd much rather get my exercise done outdoors than in the gym today (I am enjoying the gym, LOL, but the trails are calling my name today!)
emoticon emoticon
Maui... more rain in your area? Boy, California has gone from one extreme to the other!

Ok, gotta get a few chores done then I'm off on a hike... have a fantastic Friday everyone! Choc :-)

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

Maybe we need some crumb-free croissants for the hot tub? A girl can dream... emoticon

I'm off, so got to yoga, it was sprinkling a bit, and the wind had died down, it was so blustery all through the night! And when I got home the sun was out! I had a bit of a mishap this morning, as I was descending the stairs (in the dark) I missed the last step and turned my ankle, emoticon yep, smooth move, right? It's feeling a bit tender, but I still made it to yoga (after evaluating whether that was a good idea or not). the hot tub after yoga was nice, and I just got back from walking around the neighborhood, and it's still doing OK, so I think no real harm, aside from my ego! I'm sure happy I have that sauna/massage this afternoon!

Kelpie, hope you take your skis! And that J's knee is better for the paret! Larry's getting his shoulder injected on Friday, and is being scheduled for a partial shoulder replacement (I think in May?). Poor man! I hope it helps.

J has another paret race this weekend, however, he had another injection in his knee yesterday, and this one is bothering him... so we'll see. I might take my skis with me this time, we'll see.

Very busy at work, making up new revision aids for the kids......takes time.

They've taken away the hot tub at the gym I go too..... pity.... so I'll go and enjoy the one here, anyone want to join me? I have coffee, but maybe not the croissants in the tub, too many crumbs.

Have a great day everybody

The lamb was absolutely yummy! I said Dutch oven, but it is more of a Russian Stove, with a low temperature over. We heat the house with it. I can do most, but can't yet split the logs for it.
I made a whisky and honey flavoured cream with frozen berries for pudding. Thought of you and hubby Maui! I bought cheap whisky, didn't use the good stuff. And thanks for the cupcakes, no proper over, so no baking at the moment. Luckily J had plenty of bread in the deep freeze.

Whoops, just seen the time, so a hello to everybody else, and coffee and hot chocolate is waiting over on the breakfast table

enjoy

Happy Valentine's Day Deckies!

Kelpie, aw...strawberries! Oh yes, that lamb smells good!

Kay, Captain and Kelpie- Snowshoes! Fun!!! I have not done that in a long while either. This year would be great! A story I told long ago (for the newbies), was I did go snowshoe backpacking in college. We'd go up about the Yosemite Valley and camp where we could overlook. Often above Bridle vale Falls. One year we built an igloo. It was amazing. A real one! We took turns sleeping in it. (It had room for 3)
Anyhow...thanks for the memory jog.

Jo- weather...haha...yep. We have 7 days fore-casted with rain! Family...I enjoy thinking about you and those kids. There are sure lucky to have you and visa versa. Our 2 grandkids are in Wales...far far away. :(

Choc- I am LOVING hearing about all the gym and hiking activity you are getting in! Wow! Sounds like the knee has recovered, tummy better, plans for Alaska...wow...fun! Well done you! Inspirational! Yes...lots of rain! And more coming! But no serious issues at my home. But Leilani's commute...oh my. It's over that highway that regularly makes the news with mud slides, and road collapse. Its nuts! We were so dry for so long and now the faucet it on!
The Oroville Dam situation is CRAZY!

Mary- haha...boys and their hunger! You're gonna miss that, eh? You sound busy but good. Feeling better? Work widow, yep...it feels ok. We had 10 months together every day! haha...Now he works in his office mostly, but goes to the office for a few hours here and there. I have no idea how long this will last...but when he took the job, we had several little vaca's on the book, the company said 'sure'. For us, this works fine...a balance.
He seems quite happy with the extra change too. We had not planned on the medical ins fees we have to pay for me (Since I am not yet on medicare) $1400/mo including medical, eye and dental. Holy Moly!
So Mom will maybe love her new home. My mom did...when we moved here there she was uncertain at first, but she 'blossomed' there. Served on patient council, aided residents in understanding what their docs we telling them, closed her door and had private time.
Feeding starter today, baking bread in the morning. ;)

I had another trip up to my son's. The diabetes meds are making his edema worse...the Endo doc's plan...add more diabetes drug. Ack! So he is not taking it and will see his other docs in the next 2 weeks. If he struggles more, we'll have to go to the ER and hospitalize him to gain stability. I am OK with this. (Edema make his heart work more...too hard) Anyhow...challenging times.

Our daughter, Lelani stopped by a few minutes ago with her home made Chocolate cupcakes for Valentine's Day. Enough for everyone! So, enjoy! Some even have a reeses peanut butter heart on top for those who love those! :) What a sweetie!

Hubby and I got outside today, working on soil in garden boxes...I hope to plant more seeds tomorrow. Our first fruit tree blossom opened today. And so it begins.

Sweet dreams everyone!

Ooooh Strawberries! yum! Thanks, Kelpie! Enjoy your lamb!

I got a run in to work this morning, good weather for it at the moment, guess I'd better take them as they come, I hear we are getting more storms later this week...just in time for me to enjoy a long weekend! I hope I get a break so we can ski...

Jo, just pop in when you can, and enjoy the family time!

Just flying by, and leaving out the coffee......

I haven't been snowshoeing in a while. Jacques has problems with his knees, and that limits his mobility, and our outdoor pleasures. They tend to be in the garden at the moment. I need to find a way to do things on my own, apart from aqua at the gym.

Our oven gave up and we're waiting for a new one. However, we've had a shoulder of lamb cooking in the slow oven in the rocket stove (Dutch oven) as our Valentine Treat for tonight. Boy, does it smell good.

Happy Valentines everybody.

It's been a while since I put on snowshoes...can you leave the back binding bound, and just adjust the tops to get in and out? It probably depends on what style you have. Glad you got to try them out though!

Mary, glad you and son are feeling better from the cold. And homemade bread still sounds pretty good! Maybe one of these days I'll get that ambitious!

Today's CrossFit was a bit of a tough one, we were doing overhead squats, but my shoulder was not liking it, so I ditched it and went to back squats....glad the coach suggested it. And I got to practice my double unders during the WOD, so that was good. I'm going to run in tomorrow, since my ankle tendon feels fine, hope that holds true tomorrow as well!

I took out my Snowshoes and got a chance to use them tonight. It was a good workout! I'm open to tips on how to get them on and off easier, though. I had to enlist my husband's help for the back binding.

In fact I'm open to any tips you can offer at all, Outdoor People!

Happy Monday!

Feeling much better! Beautiful warm (65f) sunny day - that always helps! Little plants are all outside but not all are transplanted yet...enjoying a fruit and veggie smoothie while I log today's food... emoticon scale confirmed what my clothes were telling me - I'm up 4 pounds in 1 week! Too much food and sleep + not enough exercise = extra pounds quickly for me...time to get control of this train before it really runs off the track! Logging food is a good start. Think I'll also give up grains for a few days and get all my carbs from veggies since they're less calorie dense (exception might be bread - IF I make it myself)

Haha - 5 minutes after my post last night saying I was shocked that he wasn't hungry son asked if he could have food because he was "starving"! Easy enough bedtime meal - peanut butter and honey sandwich, banana and milk...

4 days a week hubby's on his own for lunch but M-W-F I make him a giant salad at 2pm so time to get that started...

Captain - what a great ski weekend you had! Stay warm and out of that wind! Hope you get to test those snowshoes!

Have a great day everyone!

Pura vida!
Mary

Hi All!

Seems like a lot has happened since I last checked in.

Mary, I hope both you and your son are feeling better, and that no one else gets sick!

Kay, I'm glad you enjoyed your ski, and hope your ankle continues to feel better. I know how long ankle injuries take to heal! Hey! Do you think that's why that part of the body is called the "heel?" Anyway, take good care of that ankle!

Kelpie, your weight loss is awesome! Congratulations!

Choc, I'm sure if you continue with all the gym workouts and hiking, you will be pleased with the results. Sometimes numbers on a scale are deceiving, but I bet you FEEL better, and I'm sure you are in better health, too. Keep at it, and I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Jo, I hope all is well with you and your family, and that the weather becomes more stable. We had a crazy swing last week, too. We went from the teens and twenties to almost 50 the next day, back down to the single digest the following day (all Fahrenheit). Are you in Eastern Canada? I wonder if we are in the same general climate....

Well, I did ski all weekend. I taught our family friends at our home mountain, then enjoyed a late dinner with them before driving an hour and a half away to another area, where I met another friend. We both taught at a mountain near there on Sunday as the blizzard kicked up. We had almost a foot of new snow before I left to make the drive home! The skiing was great, but the drive was sloppy, slippery, and slow.

This morning, we are snowed in, as it never stopped, and the roads are still in bad shape. My boss told me to stay home, and I will work from here. Maybe I'll finally get to try out my snowshoes this afternoon, if the wind dies down. They were a Christmas gift in 2014, but we never had enough snow (and then I had my ankle injury), so they are as of yet, unused. I'm hoping the winds calms and I can get in a nice walk before dark.

Enjoy the week, everyone!

Yet another day when I didn't get all I had planned done...fed son and starter but no work on the containers...son went off to practice and zap! this cold hit me hard, I got achy and sleepy so I took a nap...woke up (feeling much better!) just before son got home at 2:30...fed him again...made a shopping list and headed to multiple stores...while I was putting groceries away and prepping dinner son went to sleep on the old futon/bunk in his boy cave/homework office...I cooked for hubby and me, cleaned, watched some tv with hubby...just checked and boy is still asleep on the futon in his day clothes...don't know if it's because of bball practice with his head all stuffed up or because he spent the night at a house party (parents were there!)...guess I'll go wake him - surely sleeping in his bed in pj's will make his Monday morning more pleasant...ok I woke him & he's not hungry (shocking!)...he sounds much less stuffy so hopefully we both slept away these colds!

Kay - you've come a long way - tadpole to fitness butterfly - cute! It's so nice to be going the other way when you see a traffic jam opposite! Sounds like a great ski day!

Kelpie - seems you are transitioning into smaller clothing! Wish I could say the same - some of my clothes are a bit too tight right now - time for me to work more exercise into the schedule! Hope the paret was great!

yes - big transitions - boy to adult - mom to more dependence (which has her sometimes acting more childlike) - this is life!

Hot tub time!

Pura vida!
Mary

I had a tadpole figure once that represented that for me, transition from one form to another...maybe not quite so poetic as a butterfly, but I thought it was cute! emoticon emoticon

Kelpie, hope the paret was fun!

Mary, good to hear from you too! I will have to take a page from your book this summer when my garden eyes grow too big for my head! Just keep what I can manage and let the rest go!

Choc, sounds like you found a nice trail!

We got out early to ski, and a good thing too! The traffic was down to one lane on the way out (westbound I-80) on the way out for a few miles, and was up to 9 miles of back up when we headed back! I was happy we were going the other way, would not want to be stuck in that backup! I think it added about 30 minutes to our getting there, but those folks out there now will be there for hours... emoticon

It was a nice sunny ski too, we got to Mariah point, they had groomed it yesterday, so it was a little tricky in spots, but pretty enjoyable, and great views from the point. And my ankle was a little tender, but much better than last Sunday.

Happy to be back on the deck.......I've missed all the interaction.

Transitioning, so much happening in so many lives at the moment.

I'll keep that word in mind when things are difficult, it is transition. And you know what? Transition is a stage of childbirth, where maybe you're not quite sure what is happening, when you feel out of control, but at the end of the day, new life comes out.......

Transitioning indeed. Thanks Mary!

Good morning deckies! emoticon

Just caught up! Lot of great stuff going on here!

Choc - happy late birthday!

Kelpie - welcome back!!!! - thanks for the wonderful breakfasts!

Kay - wow - so much skiing this year! hope the ankle is all better!

Jo - cupcakes for a great cause! so glad Amelia is better!

Maui - work widow again! did you see it coming or was it a complete surprise? hope your son is having a better week! Thanks for the wine!

Capt - happy birthday to your son! you're doing great with all your skiing, housework AND even squeezing in trips to the gym!

All good here (except son and I both have annoying colds)...just busy - personal shopper, chef, handyman and chauffeur for mom - but a new retirement home opens here in the summer and she and some friends are planning to be "charter residents"!... son's basketball is winding down ... he turned 18 on the 6th - hard to believe ... my goodness there were lots of birthdays last week!!! had a nice walk this morning...son slept out at a friends and showed up at 10 for breakfast - now he just asked if he can eat again at noon - I guess he's planning to inhale it because he has practice at 12:30 and it's a 20 minute drive there!

so off to feed my boy, feed my starter and transplant some baby seedlings that I started a couple of weeks ago into bigger homes - I'm going back to container veggie garden this year and limiting the number I allow myself to have...too much transitioning coming up with mom going to a "home" and son going to college...trying to take on projects that are "doable" not overwhelming!

OK off "work" I go! Have a great day - hope to see you in the hot tub tonight!

Pura vida!

Kelpie... congrats on the weight loss! WOO HOO!!! I've gained a little since my ulcer has healed ... I'm sure it's because I can now eat "normal" foods instead of the bland diet I was on for the past 3 months (but also hoping it's partly because of muscles I'm building up since I've been working out at the gym & hiking every other day?)

Kay... I hear you on sore ankles and feet! I've been having some problems with that recently & have started wearing Ace Ankle wraps for extra support when hiking (seems to help a bit)

Hiked a new trail on nearby State Game Area (now that most hunting seasons are over around here I don't have to worry about scaring away the game & interrupting someone's hunt ... or getting shot! LOL) .... trail was a bit icy but not as bad as the other day's trail... cleats on boots still "a must!".... anyway, one part of the trail was really cool, looping through old growth forest area with HUGE trees for about a mile
... rest of trail alternating between open fields, brush, smaller woods and an old "burn area" that might be a good place to look for morel mushrooms in the spring.... 3 miles total hike & thinking it might be time to hit the hot tub now that I'm home, LOL

MAUI.... is it still raining in your area? Hope your yard projects weren't delayed too much by the weather!

Hot tub is calling my name... enjoy your weekend everyone! Choc :-)

About to head off to do some shopping and then some paret.

Chuffed as anything as my ski trousers, which last time I wore them were a tad snug, I can get on over my jeans, wearing a belt!

WOO HOO!

I might even do a wee bit of paret myself this evening, at the very least, I'll be waling on the snow.

See you tomorrow to let you know how it went, and hear how the weekend goes for the rest of you.....

I was just running up to dinner...but it was good! emoticon

Choc, I hear you on the icy trails, love my yaktrax for that! Fortunately, our ice has melted around here, now it's just the mud to deal with. I've had to take the week off, had a flare up of tendinitis in my foot/ankle that is aggravated by running, so I'm hoping I can still ski this weekend! It was really bad last Sunday with my ski boot pressing on it, I had to undo the buckle and zipper in order to finish my ski, so hopefully this week of "rest" will have tamed it a bit.

Kelpie, hope Jacques paret goes well!

Jo, lots of birthdays in your world this month, lots to celebrate! emoticon

Maui, I imagine you are getting the yard/garden in order, and whipping up some yummies?

Captian, skiing this weekend if I recall?

Mary, what's up in your part of the world?

Anyone else want to chime in?

Tried to hike a local "rails to trails" bike path yesterday... trail was so icy I had to walk on the edge of the path most of the way to avoid the ice... made for a very slow (and much shorter than planned) hike... sure will be glad when all the local trails thaw out and lose the ice!!!

Only 37 days to Spring! emoticon Have a super Saturday everyone! Choc

How was the run Kay?

Wow, that is a huge change in temperature Trail! My sons's birthday is the 9th too, and his partner the 6th, so a birthday week here.

I've not been outside much, but I have been to the gym. I might manage at least a local walk this weekend, or mybe go with Jacques to the paret..... that will take me to the hills at least. The only problem is that they have a huge meal after! So we'll see. And J has just had cortisone injections in his knees, so maybe not the best for him, but he wants to go.

I'll leave out breakfast, porridge is simmering away on the stove, home cured bacon ready to sizzle in the pan, free range eggs to pop beside them and coffee, lots of coffee! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Kelpie... thanks for the birthday party! Sure was fun! And waking up to fresh brewed coffee is s great way to start the day!

Hoping to get out for a hike today, but will depend on weather ... right now they are predicting wind chills in the single digits so I might have to find a trail "in the woods" to help block the wind (problem is, with all the rain we got Tuesday most of the trails are pretty icy!)

Have a great day everyone! Choc emoticon

Whew, tidy up time! I'll just slip blankies over the latecomers, who were obviously carousing into the wee small hours, and put the coffee on so it's ready for those who wake up. What's left of the fruit will go into a nice fruit salad, but maybe no mimosas today?

It's Choc's birthday I think, so a good reason for me to get back over here to set up some birthday balloons, and maybe organise a party. It's been such a long time since I've been here, but my deck friends are often in my thoughts.I'll just jump right back in....... into the hot tub!

Mimosa's to start the day anyone? And fruit salad? And maybe a bit of cake, for the birthday girl.

Happy Birthday Choc!

Well, it's been a Long time since I stayed all night in the hot tub!
I am still here...I think I am just not getting out for awhile.

First time I ever stayed all night alone.
It's been quite a night...dosing, thinking, some wine...not too to much.
But, I think I'll have another glass...

Just cause.
It's a short life...why not?
