Good afternoon deck friends!

I made dead rats on my Big Green Egg last night! Oh my gosh - they are my new favorite thing - I got jalapenos in CSA last week - I will be buying more today! Thanks for letting me know about the rats!

I'll try to send another post later...gotta go right now...

Cheers!

Mary

Tar- Glad the pie worked out!

Pam- Howdy! Your adventures sound all super, accept for the stinkbugs...yuck! Thank you for good thoughts for the redwood. Poor thing.
I did finish Outlander and will probably read the next book. Enjoyed it. I have a new book I am reading, Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss. I have read so much about the food industry the last few years, but this may be the most eye opening yet. Our nation has certainly been duped (I believe). I am only 10% of the book read...I'll keep you posted.

Snow- Hows your hubby today??

Hi Deckies, happy Monday! I had quite a busy few weeks (well, months) at work. By the time I called it a day it was all I could do to track my nutrition/fitness and sometimes I didn't even do that, so I haven't been by the deck.

A slice of Tarheel's pie and glass of wine sounds fabulous now though!

I had a nice week of hiking, swimming, and horseback riding ... great relaxing time without a computer around! Only thing was the crazy amount of stinkbugs ... we get them around where I live, but we were vacationing in southern Virginia and it was a whole different story. Do you have them on the west coast? They invaded here a few years ago and have really made themselves at home. Very damaging to crops.

MRSAND - I had exactly the same question when I first saw "dead rats" mentioned!

MAUIMA - I have my fingers crossed for your redwood. The drought is terrible.

I tried "Outlander" and just couldn't get into it. It's unusual for me not to finish a book once I start it, but this was one of the exceptions.

Happy Monday Deckies!

Wood- Hey, that was quite fun watching the game with you! And that apple crisp...and black cherry ice cream...whoa...beyond yummy. ;)
(Yep...Wood and I got together (On line) yesterday to watch the Eagles/49ers game...haha...fun!)
Yes...the drought has been quite serious for the redwood trees in the area. Many are dying. Many are in shock/distress. So, its crazy to think of having a water truck...but this tree is huge...I don't want it falling. It could take out my house and neighbors even across the street house...BIG tree.Couple hundred feet tall. Anyhow...hard to keep this out of my mind too...lol.

Kay- so...with the air washed a bit, breathing better? I sure hope the fires get contained soon! Sheesh. Our report says MUCH warmer weather by Friday here, maybe triple digits...ack!
Kombucha percolating...sounds like you are feeling better! Yay.
Yes, my older son is doing OK. He seems to have settled into a routine of independent life and finding ways to contribute, providing life value to him, which is HUGE. His medical health will unlikely ever be great, but he has a good friend close by and has the internet...also HUGE...you know...its been since you also moved. a few years now...:) My worry is hard to keep at bay, but that just goes with the territory. Snow knows all about this, trying to keep the mind quiet when worrying about a loved one.

Tar- LOL...stubborn males egos eh? Naw...never seen that before. emoticon emoticon My hubby has had a few surgeries (as have i) and I needed help and had to just let folks help. Every time ...it seems...much harder for my hubby to 'embrace' the process and just let me help. Sheesh...
So...how'd hte pie turn out? The boys will like it regardless for sure...haha...boys.

Snow- How's the hubby today? Sure hope he can lay low these first couple weeks, ice, rest, sleep and heal...shortens up the entire process. Heal right the first time...no back steps...so hard for the guys to wait. So lucky he is to have his nurse right there. Hugs. I too think about your son...the heart and mind struggle with our boys eh? He will surface.
e
Bathing after surgeries...yep...that's a tricky one. When Leilani had her femur surgery, I had to bath/shower her for 3 months...OMG. We wer not allowed to let her leg /foot to bear any weight. Getting into and out of shower, hosing off...towels, garbage bags, shower seat, girly needs...oh ya...we would be a laughing, screaming, crying , ridiculous mess of exhaustion once we were done...lol...fun times.
It's all a bonding experience eh? Yes...but men...silly eh? Crack me up!

Well, I am going to ride a recumbent bike now...(MY neighbors have one)...so I am off. Trying to get myself adapted to the bike still...lol.
Long list. I am off...

Hello to everyone else. Stop by and let us know how fall is showing up in your 'neck of teh woods'.
Here...we are having quite lovely cooler nights. Verra nice!

Happy Sunday, and the sun finally did come out! We had a rainy morning here, but it made me get out to the gym and the grocery store, so not all bad!

Snow, your DH seems to be coming along! Nice of you to help him out in the bathing... emoticon

Tar, hope the lemon pie turns out!

Got my kombucha to start brewing, and I need to clean the blender for the butternut soup I'm making for dinner tonight, so gotta get the kitchen back in order!

emoticon My hubby is cooking me Sunday breakfast!! He gets where he does so much trying to get back to normal (only day 5 lol) and then he bottoms out and has to go lay down. Its so cute tho, puttering around acting like he's a super hero... but then he'll say something like "do I usually cook one egg or two?" and I realize the pain meds keep him a bit confused. Today is bath day for dogs and hubby... could I put them all in the tub together I wonder? My hubby was so thankful to get his first bath (Dr told him no bathing until OCT 3rd!) and after his "shyness" of having me bath him wore off, he asked if the next shower if I might be naked too..... just sayin' Im sure. Men. that's all Ill say about that. emoticon

It looks like a gorgeous day, cloudy intermittently, but its gona be emoticon and warm as the day goes on. My son helped DH clean house yesterday and "babysat" so I could work go to the gym in the am, took steps class and then opted to spin instead of zumba. Then I went to work until 4. I was amazed at how exhausted I felt by 9pm! This caregiving stuff is a work out by itself! I hope to spend some outdoor time today in my garden .

Pizza Maui.... yummers! Its been so long... now I am thinking that would give me the night off from cooking as well... hmmmmmm.... Glad you get your special time in with your son, you are a good momma. I am wating for my son in Sac to "surface" and want to see us again... I just let him decide.... It happens eventually. Meanwhile, my heart aches off and on. emoticon

DH overwhelmed with the breakfast endeavor, gotta go fluff up his pillows and get and ice pack, then Im going to mozey over to the tapas bar and see if anyone is on the deck , I could use some company emoticon

Glad your feet are happy Snow! And that you are there to take good care of your DH, I remember when Larry had his shoulder surgery, not fun, but he's better now, and hopefully your DH will be back up and running soon! emoticon

We got rain today too! It's been sprinkling on and off since Larry picked me up from REI. I had to take the Subaru in, and it will be there all day (60K service) so he came and got me. Luckily for me, the dealer is right next door to REI....I was pretty restrained though, just bought some socks I needed.

Wood, I have a new GPS watch that works much more easily than my Polar, which had a separate GPS unit that had to be found by the watch before it would work. My Suunto is just a button push and it's going, really love it! No smart phone for me though. It's funny, I was doing an online lesson for a new ER computer system we are getting next month, and it kept likening the use of the system to "your smart phone", and just thought how funny that they assume all their learners have one!

Well, the ratatouille is in the crockpot, and I just have to wait for the dealer to call when my car is ready...not much else to do on this rainy day!

I didn't end up getting to the gym last night either, work got in the way.....

Maui, nice that you were able to enjoy pizza with your son, even if you do have to do a pizza-detox today! emoticon Sounds like he is doing pretty well these days!

Hmmm! Just picturing Snow in her nurses outfit! Great idea for Halloween Snow! Seriously though, I wish your husband a quick recovery and, I agree, he's lucky to have you as his personal nurse!!

Kay - I find keeping up with technology totally impossible. I've had my Android phone for 3 years and still don't know what it's capable of! (but have been told it's obsolete!) In addition to it, I have a digital camera that I should take a course in getting the most out of, my GPS frustrates me, I still fumble with my GPS watch that I wear to run each time I try to reset it and I can't even begin to troubleshoot problems on my laptop! Good thing my heart pacemaker doesn't need me to adjust anything on it or I probably wouldn't be here to share morning coffee or evening wine with my OP buddies! LOL! Thank goodness for people like Maui's son and my computer geek son who understand and thrive on playing with this stuff! Although I do have reading books on my tablet and NOOK pretty well down pat!

Maui - Wow! Bringing in a water truck to deep-water your trees provides me with a whole new visual on how dry its been there!

Youth soccer this morning and then taking my boat to my Mom's house! Both I and my older son store our boats in one of her outbuildings for the winter! That way I actually get to keep a car in my garage!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Be back tonight!

Life is good!

Snow- He's one lucky hubby to have you as his nurse...
Forget about you...IMPOSSIBLE !
Your light shines VERY brightly, even those tea lights you put up around the deck, keep you close by.
Hope hubby feels better each day...after day 4...should be better every day.
Big hugs to you both.

emoticon Playing nurse to my DH this week, Im quiet... but always on the deck! Like my good pal Maui says, I don't know what I'd do if she hadn't of invited me to that bonfire on the deck and s'more roast where I then became part of this wonderful pack of outdoor lovers! When I do get a break, I read about your days, your trips, your culinary adventures etc.... and then life beckons me and I cant even get a post out there to save my life! But things should be mellowing out a bit this next week... DH had a major shoulder repair and is currently suffering in pain and dealing with the hard part...recovery.

Im here....don't forget me! Love, ***SNOW*** (Jill) emoticon

Morning deckies!

Mary- hehe...glad you have been introduced to dead rats...best kind eh? But really, since I happen to be a jalapeno lover, I too make a variation. Mine usually have some seeds and veins to keep the heat, stuffed with Monterrey jack, cilantro, oven roasted tomato, then bacon...haha...
I have a pepper roaster even now...hehe, set jalapenos in the tray, fill and pop on the barby...

Wood- nice date night! It's been awhile since I was at armadillo willies...man they are good ribs tho. And for the record...deck meet ups are the best. Some of my favorite people on the planet...are my deckies...I cannot imagine my world without the my deck family anymore. period.

Choc- one day my friend. And you were on the bike again! Yay...I am heading out today, its cooler, so seems good enough to try again...Let's see if I can make it 3-4 times in a week. Hands and bottom need to cooperate eh? So...since you rode...does this mean your ribs are feeling better???

Kay- you still recovering??? doing ok? Did you get any of that rain???

OK...yesterday was a very cool day really...first ...it rained! I am not sure, but I think it was something like 120 days since the last rain...the air is amazing! Washed clean...vera nice!

And I drove up to see my son, (who is disabled). You know, every time I go, I learn so much, my mind is in a whirl all the way home. (2-3 hours depending upon traffic) He's a software engineer , and had an amazing job before his disability. But still when he feels up to it, he does some programming 'stuff', he was teaching me about regarding internet/computers. We went out for pizza since that's his 'happy' food and something he doesn't do by himself...so Wood, ...I too need to drink a lot of water and eat light today. I think they must put in so much salt! I was thirsty all night! But it was worth it...super visit with my 'boy'. But my brain needs a rest...lol.

Today, I will be having my trees deep watered by a water truck. Crazy times. But I have 4 redwoods, 3 birch, 1 liquid amber, 3 crepe myrtles and many fruit trees. I am not doing the fruit trees, but the rest, really need a drink. The rain was no where near what these poor trees need. Interesting times.

Happy Friday OPeeps!

Guess I missed the fire....but can't say I'll miss the smoke much....so probably a good thing! We've been less smoky for a couple of days now, such a relief! But now we're getting cold, high today in the 60's, tomorrow in the 50's, I'll have to see how my tomatoes are holding up, and my outdoor basil as well! It may be pesto time.

I have an eggplant in the fridge, but I"m thinking ratatouille, got some zucchini too. Not sure if I want to attempt Julia Child's version, or the ATK crockpot one. Probably the crockpot, I'm sure it's much simpler! emoticon

Big meeting day at work, to prep for a new computer system (again!). We haven't even been on this last one for a year yet (will be a year on Oct 1), so it seems a bit crazy to be prepping for a new one again so soon.....Oh well, I'm not the one making those decisions. But it did mess up my plans for the day!

And a short week next week too, since we head out for the wedding, should be fun!

Let the record show, meeting you, Choc, was what we needed as well! It seems to me that people come into the lives of others for a reason. These encounters make us who we are. Choc meeting you has made me a better person! Thank you for opening new windows to my world.

Yup, my first meet-up with Wood & Gloria included my first taste of yummy "dead rats" ... Add us kayaking, picnicking, hot tub, wine, going out to dinner at a local Inn... Lots of fun & Great memories of their visit here (not to mention all that helping me cope with my cancer treatments at the time... Definitely "just what I needed" and LOTS of fun!)

Just got back from a date night with Glor. Went to see "The Giver" (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and the dinner at Outback Steakhouse. (which I also enjoyed). Need to work extra hard for the next few days to work that off!

Dead rats? Yep I'm famous for them. Also not exactly diet food however. They're jalapeno peppers that have the seeds removed, filled with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and then made on a grill or over an open fire (like we did with Choc). Some are really mild. Others are on fire. I personally like red wine to put out the fire!

May be back for the late night fire.

Life is good!

LOL... "Dead Rats" are YUMMY! But it's Wood's "culinary specialty," so he will be able to provide the best " explanation / recipe
(Honest, it's REALLY not anything. "Gross")

Went for a 6 mile bike ride... Wanted to do more but bouncing along on a bike wasn't helping my sore ribs... Frustrating how long it's taking for the ribs to mend
emoticon
On the brighter nite, we are having AWESOME weather for the first week of fall ... Sunny & Temps in the 70's all this week and predicted same through the weekend and into mid part of next week ... Pair that with the trees starting to change color and it's just BEAUTIFUL!

Fire and dead rats! You sure know how to get a gal's attention Wood.

Seriously though...Fire is one of my favorite things, and it just doesn't get much better than a dead rat with red wine! Count me in!

Wood- you know it...I sure do hope one day we'll be swimming in Hawaii again. You know how I love it there. :)

Hmmm...more rain heading your way eh? Well, there are clouds and rain heading our way apparently. I sure hope so!

A month since you saw the older son's family eh? Road trips...bet you missed the grandkids.

OK...put another log on that fire, OK? and I'll pour the wine! Anyone else want a glass??

Typos? Not you Maui! Never!

Yeah, Hawaii water were pretty awesome!!! Maybe again some day!

Where can you find us tonight Mary? How about around the fire? I can make some "dead rats" over the fire for all of us!

Had my older son and his family over on Sunday since we hadn't seen them for almost a month because of our road trip. Made a load of rats! They go best with red wine. Some were really on fire!

You might change your mind about changes in elevation if you were to bike on the roads around my place! lol! There's no such thing as flat here!!! But truthfully I like biking the hills (especially the downhill!) but the uphill is a great aerobic workout!

Lots of rain predicted here for tonight and tomorrow. Bring it on!!!!

I've had a pair of red tails living here since I bought the place 12 years ago. Unfortunately they don't seem too interested in my squirrels! I guess that's why God gave us pellet guns!

No doubt about it Choc, you live in a beautiful place! I too love all your water!

Missing some of our "all stars" lately! Where are you guys?

Nice fire! Nice night sounds. Good Cab. Who's ready for some "rats"?

Life is good!

Mary- LOL...no worries, right? I have a rep here for typos...so...you just never know. I too often am in a hurry and have bad eyes...(no excuse really), but I have many times said some quite funny remarks. And now on my honeymoon sounds quite lovely really. hehe...

And I will try the recipe and tell the truth...honest.

Moussaka...you are speaking to me...believe me. Every summer, I get into my Moussaka phase...as our 'deck family' can attest.

Mary- I too love salt water. Great for my joints. But...our water here is cold, cold, cold!
Hawaii waters draw me in.

I was deeply honored to be included in the event, believe me. A decade ago, little real advances and basically zero education available to our youth. Baby steps, collaboration, belief and progress is possible.

Good afternoon everyone!

Choc, Maui, Wood and Kay - you make your homes sound wonderful - maybe I will move! emoticon jk - I think it's being surrounding by salt water that I love the most, with all the creeks and rivers I can't drive more than a few miles in any direction without going over a bridge. Plus I'm a huge wimp in cold weather - but you do live in lovely places - it would be nice to have some elevation changes and more social diversity here for sure!

Choc - I too believe in baby steps - it doesn't do any good to set goals that just aren't doable. Cutting back to one small DC a day is a big improvement! Hope those ribs are feeling better and better!

Kay - I sure hope some rain fell today! I would love to be able hike from my back yard and not just walk on flat ground!

Wood - Deer & otter in one night along with great fishing! Doesn't get much better than that!

Maui - I think it's time for me to get stronger reading glasses! You wrote "late November" and I read "last November"! I hope you like the recipe - I used a good bit more of all the seasonings than it called for - but I really like things flavorful - and spicy! It won't hurt my feeling if you don't love okra - I live with a reluctant okra eater (dh) and a non-eater (ds)...I got eggplants and tomatoes in my CSA today so it's mousakka at our house tonight! What a wonderful awards event you attended - a very special group working on such an important cause - you included!

We've had lots and lots of rain and temps have cooled from high 80s to low 60s. I hope some cool rains are now falling in California!

Where can I find y'all hanging out tonight?

Pura Vida!
Mary

Wood- Very cool. Story book wild life...Otters are the most playful creatures eh? I can just picture you there fishing and visitors coming by to share the stream. They trust you, know you are an outdoor adventurer. :)

I too had a wildlife sighting of note today, not as good as yours though. But one day, you'll see my place...and in front we have a VERY large redwood. The Red Tail hawks love to hunt from up there. Crows come in a 'Murder' to harass them. But today, an adult pair we at the top, close by each other, having a 'conversation it seemed. It took me quite awhile to figure it out...but...I believe they were not talking to each other, but to 2 youngsters 1/3 of the way back down the tree. My hope is they were teaching them how to to hunt squirrels...but who knows.

Choc- I just saw on the news, smoke from the King Fire west of Tahoe, has particulate that has made it to Michigan! CRAZY! We are really hoping for rain.

Mary- I have looked at the recipe, and I am gong to try it. lol...I am adventurous in many ways, and this Okra eating seems a bit of an adventure for us out west. But, as you prob have figured out...I LOVE adventure and living life, so here goes! I'll let you know. And, I re- read your post. You mentioned I am honeymooning...hehe...not sure what i said, but I have apparently miss-led you. Hubby and I met in the emoticon mid 70's...been married a long while. Kids all grown , oldest kid 36...honeymoon sounds good though. We do try and honeymoon now and again.

OK...My book is calling...I am currently reading 'Outlander'. Anyone else read it?
See you all tomorrow.

That stream I just refered to? Just fished it tonight. Caught a bunch of bass and a couple of walleyes, had a doe and her fawn walk right past me (and I was in the water), had an eagle fly by and most exciting thing of all had a river otter playing aroundme. Otters are very rare in PA! Yes I love my stream!

My list is a lot like Maui's, only the distances are switched! I love being able to walk to work when I want to, to be able to hike from my backyard, to be less than an hours drive from the best mountain biking around, and XC skiing in the winter....And close enough to family to be able to visit when we want.

Just wish the smoke would clear out!

Wood... Liked the video (grew up watching most of those TV & movie stars)... Thanks for sharing :-)

Why I like living where I am? Michigan's Great Lakes, inland lakes, rivers (all great for scuba diving, kayaking, swimming, fishing) ... Isle Royale National Park, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and many many state parks (all great for hiking, backpacking, camping,) love our changing seasons (trees changing color now, cross country skiing in winter, and all the spring & summer outdoor activities)... And as Maui said, most of my family living nearby, not to mention a lifetime of friends also living in the area.... And I'm also lucky enough to have grown up on Michigan farm and still live out in the country complete with daily visits from wildlife big & small, yet I'm also near a few small "rural towns" and within a 30-60 minute drive to "cities" (not that I go for "big city stuff" very often... Can't even remember the last time I shopped at a "big Mall shopping center, LOL)

Morning all,
I am sorry to have missed the wine and good conversation last night.

Yesterday was a draining while rewarding. I spent the day in San Francisco for a 1 Day conference and awards event, a meeting of the minds of those impassioned with making a difference in the lives of women. CEDAW is a UN Commission on the Status of Women and works to protect Women's Human Right's.
http://friendscosw.org/2014_CEDAW_Awarde
es
I am NOT an awardee by any means, but...was invited to sit at the table with the UCSF awardee for Health. As many of you know, I worked many years collaborating to develop curriculum 'Teens teaching Teens; Stop the Silence of the Violence", Domestic Violence education. Anyhow, Yesterday many brilliant, committed and passionate folks gathered to honor those who work tirelessly. I was more than honored to be among those asked to celebrate. The entire room of about 250 , have all contributed toward improving Women's Human rights. Quite a day.

Today, I go back to my garden, and catch up. :)

Kay, Yep...that coffee can be rough on a tummy. Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Mary- I will have to check out this link...:) Thank you! Fall is a great time for stews. Yum.

Choc- Hey...yep...finding the best way that works for you...the only way eh?

Wood- interesting why we live where we live eh? What keeps us home...I think there are real basics ...like economics...and family. Most of my children live withing a couple hours from me, makes it very hard to move. Also, we are pre-Prop 13 out here in CA, this is HUGE. We bought our home a long time ago and if we move, our tax base changes BIG time...and then there is living out here. What else keeps us here? I love the diversity. Here in Silicon Valley/Bay Area we have what seems like 'real' diversity. Every race, culture, religion that has ever existed, is here in this area. Life is VERY busy and no one has time to bicker. Everyone hardly even notices the differences...very cool. Love it. The down side is the cost of living. If we had not bought so long ago, we could in no way purchase our own home now. Life eh. Another huge reason, is access to the outdoors...we are 4 hours from Tahoe, 1 hour from SF, 1.5 hour from Monterey, 2 hours from Big Sur, 1.5 hours from Napa, 3.5 hours from Yosemite, 45 minutes from Santa Cruz...and tons withing that radius. Yes...we are very blessed.

OK...I have a long list. haha...
Hugs all around my deck family.

Interesting how we usually love where we live. Mary loves where she lives hurricanes and all. I knoe Maui loves where she's at even with droughts, eartquakes and a high cost of living. Met some NOMADS that live in tornado alley and love thei rural way of life. Met a cajun down in Louisiana who has been flooded out several times. Both Choc and us live where winters can be pretty challenging but sort of like that challenge. Seems that we not only adapt to our surroundings but we develop a love for it as well. Neatest part - we get to share our unique surroundings with the others here on the deck.
Shall we have a glass of wine and compare what it is that keeps us home?

I lave sitting around my glass front wood stove on a cold winter night! And I love my stream where I can fish anytime I have the whim to do so!

Life is good!

I did enjoy some fried okra when we were in Mississippi last year....I think it's good in gumbo too, right?

Maui, I think it was more the coffee I over did than the wine....and I always have my wine with dinner, (one glass...) so no worries there. Have not had any issues since Saturday, so I'm feeling like this has resolved! emoticon although I'm still going for a mix of regular and bland foods....

We are all smoked in again.... emoticon it really is noxious! Hope it clears out in the morning, I really want to walk to work, just not in that stuff.

Mary...
Have to confess I "gave up on giving up" the Diet Coke... (Went two weeks with no DC, but ended up gaining 5 pounds in that time probably due to the juices or lemonade I tried to use for a substitute) I am limiting myself to only one a day & the smallest size instead of a "large" so maybe with these gradual "decreases" I can eventually stop drinking it.... "Baby steps" sometimes work better than diving in headfirst for me...

Happy Monday everyone!

Today is the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo...we have been so fortunate since then but looking back at how devastating it was is another reminder of how dangerous our surroundings can be...we're also on a fault line!...but I'll take the hurricanes, earthquakes and poisonous snakes - I never want to live anyplace else...I've got pluff mud in my veins!

Maui - I was a newlywed 25 years ago when Hugo hit and you're a newlywed now! I thought of your brussels sprouts honeymoon while I was observing my little plants yesterday! I have pea envy! emoticon My pea plants are still tiny. This is my first year growing a few okra plants and I find the plants lovely - they look more like ornamental plants to me than vegetable plants and have lovely yellow blossoms (you can see one in the foreground of my rainbow profile pic). I measured the tall one yesterday and it's 8'4"! I grew up eating and loving okra and tomatoes and fried okra...but mostly I use it in African, Middle eastern or India style stews...here's a link to a recipe: http://nanastastytraditions.com/2013/10/01
/gnaouia-okra-stew/

Wood - my recreational priorities change all the time - I spent 6 or 8 years playing tennis 4 or 5 times a week then burned out and stopped completely for 4 or 5 years before picking up a racquet again...but I don't take it nearly as seriously as I used to - it's funny to be around my friends who are just as into it now and I was a dozen years ago!

Kay sounds like you had some great finds this weekend on your shopping day and in your home! Hope your tummy is feeling better and that the smoke is clearing!

Tar - I love this time of year too...October is our best weather of the year! Enjoy your week!

Choc - are you out there? How's the soda avoidance going? Still going well for me but I decided to let myself have one per month...this month it was on the 15th...most days I don't miss very much but some days (like today) I think how much I miss it quite often...

Pura Vida!

Welcome home again Wood.
A week eh? wow...but I bet there are plenty of fall related jobs to get done before winter arrives. The book Loop sounds like a book I'd like.
Changing interests as we age eh? Yep...it happens for sure. I love it. Reinvent myself relationships, life is reborn this way true? I am glad we are not tightly fastened to the way it has always been or been done. Makes life interesting and exciting.

Kay- hahaha...Love it! Find earrings that go with your dress, without even trying! Excellent. Now if I could only find what I was looking for. Still no luck here, but for many days, I have not even tried. needed an emotional break. lol.
Um...was thinking about the wine and coffee...might be too much too soon eh? Both could be hard on the digestive system. Wine with food, might be OK though...
Seems the smoke is going north of Sacramento maybe...I am really hoping they get the fire under control. Glad its better in your area.

Mary- Ah...rainbows, nice pics! Lovely surprise. Okra, hmmm...I have cooked or eaten Okra. Sometimes I see it here in the stores...not to often. Do you have a favorite way to prepare it.
I put up cages for my shelling peas because they are growing so fast.

Tar- Sorry the weekend went by so fast for you. I am with you on this time of year...warm days and cool nights...yep...love it. We are having lots of fall-ish changes early, likely due to the drought. I have a Liquid Amber and 3 Birch in my front. Often have beautiful colors. What trees do you have near you??

Today hubby and I went to a Soiree to celebrate the birth of twins, now 7 weeks old. Straight away, I was handed a baby (It happens). So, I definitely got my baby fix today. The Mama is one of my 4Hers all grown, a Federal Public Defender turned mom! Love it. She will go back to work at some point, but now...a Mom. She lives a few bock from me for now...so I am quite happy! Her mom (Grandma) is one of my best buds)...so today was quite fun and we welcomed the baby boys to the greater family.

Did somebody say wine for tonight???? I think its time for a glass. Red please.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Yep, I'll have a glass of wine to finish the weekend...

Wood, you volunteer work sounds rewarding and fun! What a great way to meet like minded folks as well, And nice that you could help your friend with the move and come home early!

Mary, nice pics, those views were a great surprise! As for the smoke, it's blown in again today, but at least we had 2 days of respite, pretty much. It was supposed to rain today, and I felt a few drops, but then nothing. Went out for a walk, thinking it might rain, but still, just a little smoke, and no rain.

I was going through some empty boxes to toss in the recycle bin as part of my newest decluttering phase, and found in one a pair of earrings I didn't even realize I had purchased! What a nice surprise! They go really well with the dress I bought for the wedding in DC, so I'm really happy to have found them!

Wood your mission work sounds wonderful...how nice of you and Gloria to give your time!

Early last evening when I went out to pick some basil and okra for dinner as I was looking up at my okra pods I saw a beautiful rainbow in the eastern sky then when I looked at the western sky it was one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen in a while...both filled me with happiness! They are my new profile pick.

A little wine on the deck tonight sounds marvelous...hope to see you all there!

Hope everyone is feeling well and that the fires in the West have been extinguished!

Good morning Outdoor People!

Back again! Maybe this time for an entire week!!!

Nope. No hunting this trip! Just moving furniture out of storage areas and into the new house. It went very well and we finished much quicker than expected so Devin and I came home last evening already. Archery hunting for deer opens here in two weeks, but my calendar is so full of non-hunting events that I'm not sure when I'll fit it in. It's interesting (to me anyway) that when I was a younger man, I was a fanatical hunter and also enjoyed my fishing time. Now I'm much more into my fishing time and although I still enjoy both my time in the woods and the time with my son, the hunting is just not as important as it once was.

On the subject of sharing our space with wildlife, I just read the book "The Loop" by Nicholas Evans. Really good read about interactions of people with wildlife (wolves) as well as interactions of people themselves. I highly recommend it.

I still have only done a really quick scan of all the posts that were made while I was gone so I'm a little lost in some areas. Illnesses and injuries, I see once again out there. Kay, I'm not sure what you've got going on, but it looks like things have improved? Glad the wine went well. I'll share a glass with you this evening. Choc? Did the job to your ribs? Painful injury. Been there and done that!

The mission work we did this time was we worked at the "Midwestern Mission Distribution Center". Again, we had the opportunity to work with some amazing people. Met a man named Bill that just blew me away with mission work he's been doing in South Sudan. He had a lot of stories and pictures of his experiences there. Again, it made me realize that through know fault of our own, how lucky we are to live here in the United States. Living in areas like the Sudan just is beyond my comprehension. We did various jobs at the Distribution Center. One of my favorites was I worked on making school desks that would be going to Haiti.

I think I already mentioned that we spent 5 days at a NOMAD convention in Branson, Missouri. 317 NOMADS! We completely filled the RV park! We had the opportunity to meet NOMADS from all over the U.S.! (Sort of like being here on "The Deck".) Made a lot of interesting friends.

BTW Mary, one of the NOMADS was bitten by a copperhead. Hand was all swollen up. Definitely a critter to be careful around!

Be back this evening.

Live! Love! Laugh!

Enjoyed a glass of wine last night, first one in 2 weeks....it was delightful! emoticon

Enjoyed a cup of coffee this morning, again, delightful, but then had a second...probably not a good idea! I ended up taking the immodium....so I'll go easier on my tummy for the rest of the day.

No smoke today, not sure if the wind shifted, or what, but it was pretty nice not to have that! I don't think it was too bad yesterday either. Did a lot of yard work today, mostly cutting back some bushes that are way overgrown! And I pulled one of my tomato plants that had died. Still getting bunches of tomatoes on the others though. I bought an eggplant, so may cook up a ratatouille tomorrow.

I didn't hear about the mountain lion attack Maui, where was it? Anywhere we went? I remember one in Auburn years and years ago, freaked me out a bit, but I hike and bike there a lot, and while I've seen bobcats, have not seen a mountain lion, but I agree, it does pay to stay aware of your surroundings.

Wood, hope your enjoying your time on the farm! Do you get to do some hunting or just moving?

Mary, hope you are cooling down!

Tar, hope you're enjoying your long weekend!

Afternoon,

Kay- Great news you can take Imodium now if needed. Whew. Hope the whole situation calms down. The air, just scary. We are still OK down here. I haven't looked at the stats today, but gosh, everyone pray for rain eh?

Mary- OOOooo...copperhead scary with an off leash doggie. Good thing he was dead. You are so right about the wildlife sharing our space or we are sharing theirs. Staying mindful is so critical. We had a Mt Lion attack near us, actually only a couple miles from where I was at the time in local hills. But I worry when folks seemingly over-react when a wild creature is just being itself. I know we have talked about this here on the deck before. But again, I believe it is up to u to be aware of our surroundings and not punish animals for being themselves. I live in a suburban area and twice in the past 2 weeks I have seen coyotes running early in the AM. I suspect they are thirsty and hungry.
I love Brussels sprouts! Hubby and I consider it an anniversary food item. We were married late November and spent several days on the Monterey Peninsula, near the greater Salinas valley. That's the season for Brussels Sprouts and the entire trip we could smell them...lol. It was mid harvest! Good thing we like them. ;) Glad your crops are surviving. My babies look better every day! We are having cooler nights....yay.

Wood- Your Bourbon tour sounds interesting. And you brought some home. What kind? And you mentioned a mission trip, where? What kind of work? Have a good work weekend!

Tar- Re-vamping the routine always good idea eh? and now your days will become more manageable...good good. Long hot summer days I bet, now shorter, cooler days...yay.

Quick post, I"m headed out in a minute to run errands. Took the day off work, so no walking in for me! Not that I would, as Maui noted, the air here is pretty much unbreathable! We can smell it indoors even, not good for the patients in the hospital especially the ones with breathing issues! Hope they get that fire controlled soon...

Other than that, my issue has resolved once more, the NP said I should start taking immodium the next time I had my problem, and I haven't taken one yet, so I'm feeling like a new woman!

Gotta run!

Had a startling moment this morning while walking little Harry...Copperhead in the road (see temporary profile pic)...I realized it was dead before my heart started racing too badly!...little Harry was off-leash as usual - luckily I saw the snake first and put his leash on before he decided he wanted a dead snake as a new best friend...what a reminder that our semi-urban neighborhood there are wild (and potentially dangerous) creatures co-habitating with us!

Wood - Welcome back (if only temporarily) and Happy Hunting in the Upstate!

Maui - most of my seedlings survived - I've started brussels sprouts, sweet peas, arugula, a variety of lettuces and have some tomatoes that I started a couple of months ago that have many blooms and some small fruit...still getting some okra (one plant is 8 feet tall - I have to stand in a chair to harvest!) lots of basil and a few hot peppers...I hope it cools down a bit for you so your babies will be happier and you won't have to work so hard protecting them!

Wishing everyone else a wonderful day too but must scoot back to working!

Pura Vida!

Mary

We went to the 1792 Bourbon Distillery. The place was huge! A bunch of big black buildings with a whole lot of tanks that looked like they should have been at a refinery or petroleum storage facility except they were stainless steel. It turned out that the buildings were all painted black to hide the black mold that grows on all distilleries. (They call it distillery mold of course. Story goes that during prohibition the revenuers used to find the hidden stills by looking for the mold on the nearby trees. Supposedly, the mold is harmless just unattractive.) The guide we had was an attractive middle age woman who seemed to really know her stuff! The tanks (cookers) where the grain is cooked down are 4 stories high! They get 10+tractor trailer loads of grain a day (corn, barley, hops). Once the grains are magically cooked into this wonderful 135 proof alcohol mixture it is cut and then barreled in charcoaled oak barrels for at least 4 years (six years for the 1792 label). Storage area for these 500 pound barrels is also quite impressive.

We learned that bourbon officially became America's drink because Lyndon B. Johnson felt that America needed it's own official drink. Scotland had Scotch, Ireland -Irish Whiskey and so on. So through an act of congress requirements were set for the making of Bourbon which became the official American drink! Requirements that I remember is that it has to be at least 51% corn, must be aged in charcoal oak barrels for at least 2 years, barrels can only be used once, and water was to be pure spring water. There was more but that's what I remember. 95% of all bourbon comes from the state of Kentucky. Afterwards we were given a complimentary taste test of the different bourbons made there. (6 labels but we were only allowed to samples by Kentucky law.) However, the samples were quite generous!

The 1792 plant also bottled other companies products. While we were there they were bottling vodka even though they don't make vodka themselves. One of the reason for all those stainless steel tanks.

It was a really interesting and informative tour.

Life is good!

Anybody notice that I wasn't around?
Back now. Well sort of.

Glor and I have been road tripping for the past 3 weeks. Got back this afternoon. 3000 miles later. Saw a little bit of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland! Did some mission work, did a NOMAD convention in Branson (317 NOMADS there), did a bunch of shows there, biked, hiked, walked, toured a quilt museum and a bourbon distillery, went out for a few meals, played games with new friends, made a bunch of new friends, camped in private parks, in state parks, in a national park and a national forest, and did a hell of a lot of driving!!!! Oh yeah and had a great time! Life is good! I'll try and provide a lot more details later to anyone who wants to hear them!

Of course, I missed you guys and all that was going on here on the deck, but pretty much went without all my technology this trip. Stayed off the internet except for checking my email and checking the weather, watched no TV the entire trip and didn't even play Words With Friends with anyone. Of course, I did put my GPS to good use!

Now when I said that I was home, sort of, it's because I'm leaving tomorrow again. This time to the farm I hunt in upstate PA. My buddy had a new modular home put in there and my son and I will be helping him move furniture into the place this weekend. So I'll be "On the Road Again."

Hopefully by Monday, I'll get the time to read back on what has been happening here on the deck.

In the meantime, I could sure use a little hot tub time along with a good bourbon. (I brought some back from Kentucky.) Hope some of you can join me!

Life is good!

Maui... Ribs are much better, thanks... You're right though, still no "heavy lifting" so yes, the kayak is "dry docked" for now (plus it's goose hunting season here, so I'd probably avoid the lakes anyway)... Have gotten out on the bike a few times for short rides on a local bike trail or the back roads near my home... Thinking I want to get back out hiking too now that the cooler fall weather is here (our trees are already starting to change color and mornings are in the low 40's...Love this time of the year!)

Afternoon,

Gosh...where do the days go???? I get so caught up, sometimes get here to teh deck and start reading, then something comes along to wisk me away.

Kay- Great news...kinda...I guess you don't have any other the issues doc tested anyhow. More rice eh? How's that going? Sure hope the NP will have some ideas that will help. You know...to digest, gotta have all the right bugs and enzymes getting along. Sorry you are having such trouble. But at least you can get along enough to get to work, go work out etc. That part must be a saving grace. Whew. You feeling the weather shift? Getting smoke from any of the fires?

Mary-Did your seedling survive the rain? Hope so. Remind me what you planted... My little seedlings are doing quite well really I have my second planting of both beets and leeks in. All my babies are surviving...but a bit of a challenge right now. Heat by day is a bit much for these little ones...but I am babying them, so far so good. I even talk to them..haha. A jog along the marsh...sounds lovely. Good for you. Are you too seeing signs of fall?? Garden still giving you a little something? Happy Thursday to you too!

Kelpie- I made some bread today. (I make bread with fresh miiled organic flour, wild yeast slow fermentation...I bet you'd like it. Thought about you...hmmm...it would go very nicely with some cheese and wine eh? You want to join me? So, where are you teaching these days? Did your house project get completed? IS it season for Jacques to begin mushrooming? IS he still fermenting? So many questions...

Brenda- Hows the naturalist classes going? What's next? You and hubby have plans for the camper this fall? I think you are in Canada this week for a widows conference yes? Prob busy. Do you get to see (former)MIL while up there? (You know, I don't know the proper etiquette for addressing a 'former MIL, after one become a widow, please guide me) Enjoy the conference! Are you speaking?

Snow- Hmmm...where are you??? Hope all is OK. Thinking about you. My hummers have been hovering close while I am out back, I always think of you when they visit me. But really...please stop by deck and let us know how you are. Hugs.

Choc- Hey...hows the recovery coming along? I have heard ribs can be painful. Do you feel better? What are your limitations? No lifting kayak on the car roof I bet.

K-Po- Of course, I am happy to share. I should have spinach ready to start picking soon! Swiss Chard already picking. But I should have a steady supply of 'goodies ' all fall. Still have a variety of peppers to offer as well. Do you need any of those? Pimentos, Jimmy Nardellos, Anchos, Anaheim, Jalapeno, green, Poblano...lots to choose from. I even have some Island purple peppers that are ever so cute. I still have some strawberries even...not many...but I get enough for breakfast. Do you want some of each?
How's our little Baby O today? Are you getting some outdoor time with her and Argus? (Oh...happy birthday Argus!) I can just imagine Baby O in stroller, Argus alongside, out for a walk. Nice image. (Like the one of you snuggling your baby with Argus at your feet) Hope all is well today. Hugs.

Tar- You are sounding great my friend! What's next for you??? How are you doing with the evenings? And all those workouts you are getting in. What type of workouts are you doing??? I have had to shift mine up to baby my joints more. Looking for new ideas...

Kits- hey...short summer for you I think...sheesh...

Cassie- you too... are your crops going to get harvested on time???

Wood- I still have Jalaenos as I said to Kelly...I think this weekend will be our last dead rats of the season. You want to help me grill them?
I think with this cooler evening temps, a fire might be nice.
What do you think??

I am ready for some pool time. Need to stretch my legs and kick a bit...so, I am heading out to take a few laps. Then hot tub time! Anyone want to join me?

Quick Weds morning post, since I have to head off to work soon!

Got the labs back yesterday (and the issue came back a bit as well emoticon ) and they were negative, so I'm going back to see the nurse practitioner and see what I do now.

Hope you all have a great day watching seedlings, snuggling babies, working and working out or whatever you have in store!

Good evening everyone! Sitting her snuggling my little lady as she heads off to sleep. Nothing better than nuzzling the soft baby head and a dog sleeping on your feet!

Choc - oh no! broken ribs! I'm sorry - what a bummer about the trip. I say make up whatever story you want: rescuing an old lady from a burning building when you were attacked by a group of ninjas you were forced to fend off. Sure, you have broken ribs, but yo should see them!

Kay - eak! Sounds like you have had a long bout! I hope the tests come back from the docs soon and you get some resolution. A rice diet is no fun and you burn too much energy to live that way. I agree that its not the kombucha...

Tar - I agree with Kay. I have learned to not make any foods "good" or "bad" and to think of food as giving myself the best nutritional value I can any given day. If I want a piece of cake, I have it, don't feel badly about it and move on. For me I have found this takes the emotion out of it and I most often want the "good" foods by default. t makes me feel good to know I am doing the best for my body. If that makes sense...

Mauima - yes, getting some activity in and it feels great! Seeing some results and feeling confident I will lose the baby weight.

Hope the heat doesn't toast your seedlings!

Sad news, my last CSA veg pick up is next week please send fresh veg!

Kelpie So nice to hear from you!

Snow, Wood - thinking of you!

emoticon Good afternoon Deckies!

Just finished a stressful week - my own fault - procrastinated and dug myself into a hole at work so had to work many extra hours to meet a Monday deadline - no time for decking or exercising emoticon - I survived and it's time to get back to some good stuff!

Kay - so good to hear that you are finally feeling better! Good luck with your shopping!

Choc - sorry about the ribs - I was a klutz last week too - smashed into the corner of my bed and have an enormous bruise on my leg emoticon

Maui I hope your seedlings are doing well...it's been raining all day today...I'm hoping my seedlings haven't drowned...if they're hanging in there I think I'll move the containers to the porch to let them dry out a little... emoticon

Tar - happy that things are going well for you emoticon

Kelpie it's very nice to meet you! Your dinner sounded wonderful! emoticon

Enjoy your evening everyone! I think I'll hit the climbing rock then relax by the waterfall!

Felt pretty good yesterday, first time in a while! Got to the gym after work, did some yoga when I got home, and we went to the neighbors for dinner. They kindly made me a bland meal, and I skipped the wine. Nice company and conversation....can't beat that!

I'm hoping to walk in to work today and tomorrow, hope the smoke has cleared out, it was pretty bad yesterday. It looks a bit better this morning, at least you can see the mountains across the valley, not so yesterday!

Tar, enjoy your long weekend!

Got in the bike ride! I wasn't feeling it when we started out, but got warmed up, and made it to the top. We could see a lot of smoke drifting in, and asked the fire lookout guy if it was the Yosemite fire, but he said it was a new fire in Pollock Pines, with mandatory evacuations. I started smelling it about halfway down to the car, and could see some ash falling as well. emoticon We've had a fairly benign year for fires compared to last year, but I really hate to see all that smoke, never a good sign!

Choc, hope you got out too!

Tar, 3 day week beats my 4 day week (I'm hoping to take Friday off to run errands!)

On a good note, my GI issue has seemed to finally calmed down a bit, I had no issues to speak of after yesterday morning...fingers crossed I'm turning a corner on this!

Ouch, Choc, well, however you cracked those ribs, I hope they get better soon!

Tar, I've done some hiking in Zion, but not that one. There are many great hikes there it's a beautiful area. Hard to go wrong!

Maui, I still have the kombucha, I told Larry I would lay off for a while, since he blames that for my problem. I told him that's not the culprit but he's suspicious, so I'll lay off until the labs come back and I get a diagnosis from the doctor. Still waiting!

I made an appointment to get my hair done on Friday....it's pretty much been 3 years since I've had anyone cut it! Crazy, I know...but since we're headed back to our niece's wedding in DC in October, I figured that was a good excuse! I may have to take the day off, I need a dress too, it's black tie optional, and I don't really have anything that is appropriate for that kind of event, so I just need to get out and find something. Wish me luck on finding comfortable dressy shoes! emoticon

Hi all... Not to worry bout the ribs...just cracked, not broke....I was just a klutz, tripped & did an imitation of the "help I've fallen & can't get up" commercial, LOL (wish I could say it was due to something exciting & wildly adventurous but was just a slip & fall about a week and 1/2 ago here at home)

Morning Deckies!

Kay- Hope the rice works! And then, once settled some good fresh probiotics. Your sister's Kombucha still percolating at your place? I bet my Kimchi and sauerkraut would help once you could eat cabbage...hmmm...hope they doc figures it out soon!

Kelpie- Thanks for the blanket. It was super warm when I went to sleep, but the night cooled nicely. I even slept in! Mmmmmmm...aubergine caviare one of my favorites. Sounds like a perfect summer munchie. ahhhh and with wine...of course! Hard to express how happy I am to know you are here. I have figured you were so gosh darn busy with 3 jobs or something...so have been waiting to 'let you settle it all out', and surface when you got a breather. Yay. You got on the bike! There lots of bike riding going on. Wood even bought a road bike! I am still working on getting my bottom ready for biking...lol. I bet the help line for fitbit might indeed help. I never got one...but maybe I will start wearing my step counter. That's really all I need.

Choc- Did I miss something?????? How did you crack ribs?????
Please take care!

I have company coming for supper. A man and his wife, who was a beloved teacher to my children is retiring to Oregon. So dinner prep here...and regular chores, so better get hopping. Won't check back till tomorrow...
So, hello to everyone else...Enjoy your Saturday!

OK, aubergine caviar? Recipe? That sounds good....and probably something I can eat at the moment....if it's not spicy. I've been roasting veggies a lot, can't eat raw stuff right now.

Re: fitbit, I ended up getting a new one when I lost my first one on a long bike ride. No way I was going back to hunt it down! And it seems to hold a charge much better than the old one (which held the charge pretty well) so I think they have made some improvements.

It looks like a nice day, hope I can shake this fatigue and get out!

Thanks for the welcome back, I feel quite at home. That's why I tiptoed round putting blankets on those of you who enjoyed the bonfire. Did anyone manage to see the "heavenly dancers" here's a link to a song from my childhood....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SNO

On cheat meals, I remember a school friend's dad, who was a consultant cardiologist, when he put people on a diet, he said, high days and holidays excepted! We had some of Jacques' children last night, so it was an exception. Mind you, not over the top, I'd made aubergine caviare, which we had with veggies from the garden, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, carrots... as a starter, and then Jacques had cooked a rabbit with carrots etc, served with ratatouille, again from the garden, cheese and peaches, from the garden. This is the time of year of abundance! There was also an abundance of wine! That might have been slightly over the top emoticon

Choc, hope the ribs get better soon, and Kay, that you get your issues sorted out.

Well done tar!

Maui, looking forward to catching up a bit more.

OK, only day two, but I did manage the exercise bike again!

My fitibit is being a bit erratic though, it sometimes won't charge, which is a pain. I might contact them to see if they have any ideas, or if it is just needing replaced! If so, it'll have to wait!

Off to get some more things done,

Have a great weekend.

Maui, I must have read your mind before I read your post....just made a batch of white rice (with fat-free chicken broth) which should be on my menu for dinner. I'm hoping Larry will get my phone message, I asked him to pick up some stuff from the store that I can eat, we are out of bananas, and that has been my go-to fruit (and I finished up my homemade applesauce this afternoon as well!). Anyway, I called the doctor and they finally called me back this afternoon, labs still aren't back yet... emoticon so I'll just eat the bland food and wait.

Tar, I don't track, so I don't have any thing to call a cheat meal, but I don't like the term, but I'm OK with the concept. Actually I don't think dieting needs to involve deprivation, if we try to make most of our food choices healthy ones. There should always be a little room for a treat now and again, and I think when we put foods off-limits (unless they really do a number on our physiology) it makes them more tempting and it makes us more susceptible to bingeing when the opportunity presents. But I guess I should ask, what exactly do you mean by "cheat meal"?

Kelpie! Welcome back to the deck!

Choc, did I miss something? Cracked ribs? ouch! Sorry you had to miss your backpacking trip....hope you feel better soon!

We're still pretty warm here during the day, then cool way down at night, which makes it so much easier to sleep...

Kelpie... Hi & welcome back! So good to see "the old crowd" here with all our new members! The more the merrier!!!! :-)

Maui... Send some of that hot weather this way! Only in the 50's here during the day and has been in the mid to low 40's at night (with lots if rain, wind and storms mixed in during the week)
This weather, along with a few cracked ribs that I'm nursing, has forced me to cancel the week long backpacking trip I was planning for this coming week on an island off Michigan's Upper Peninsula ...I could probably "put up with" the rain if it was warmer here, but the ribs were the final deciding factor... Didn't think a backpack & all day hiking in cold and rain would help in the "healing" ....and the "bummer" part is this was my last chance to go there this summer because after next week the "ferry" (AKA pontoon boat) that takes you over to the island will be closing for the season... Oh well, I guess I'll have to just start planning next summer's trip instead (Maybe I'll go back to Isle Royale in Lk Superior... LOVED that trip when I did it a few years ago)

Hope everyone is having a great Friday... How about a bonfire on the deck tonight?

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

Happy Friday all,

Kelpie- emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Beyond great to have you here. Lots to catch up on...most everyone is here...some may be on holiday etc...so no worries. One of my 'big' news stories, is I got to go visit Aster on her farm in August. It was amazing of course. Deer, coyotes, crickets, gardens, springs, fields, golden eagle, swallows, bats, apples, GREAT food, wine, company and more...a bon fire! Anyhow, Hugs across the ocean my friend.

Tar- OK...cheat meals...YES they are OK. But paired with honesty...every other meal cannot be a cheat meal. And over the course of 6 meals, the damage has to balance back out...yes?
I try to regulate the cheat meal...by several factors...Size ...meaning caloric intake, timing, what I ate the rest of the day. Our liver can only process so many calories in a few hours...so...rather than withholding a treat, try to control the caloric load. If you have to have some chocolate cake, have it A couple hours from a meal. It'll do less damage. And if I went way overboard on a meal, then really trim back the next few meals, then right back on track. Wine etc...plan ahead and consider this your bread for the meal. So...veggies and protein, with wine on the side for the carb...plan smart, even when cheating per se.
Hope this helps.

Hot hot hot here...100ish today. Trying to baby my poor little seedlings...sheesh...

Kay, Hmmm...sorry about the symptoms and not hearing back from the doc. Frustrating I imagine. Rice? I know...its not always good to eat a 'ton' of rice, but...
Doc Maui says...white rice. Nice big bowl, plain. Boring yes and simple carb I know...but,maybe it'll work. Maybe even for 3 meals straight. Then add other foods carefully.

Bland diets...blah...but, sometimes the cure.
Get better my friend.

Beautiful moon again tonight. Hope you all went out to enjoy. I think I may just sleep out on the deck and gaze tlll my hearts' content.

Quick update, no smoke today that I could tell really, so that's a relief!

Have not heard from the doctor yet, I was hoping to hear today, so I'll try to call tomorrow if I get a chance. I was feeling better today do for a while, but the symptoms came back again mid-afternoon...well, I guess I'll stick to this bland diet for a few more days, or until I hear from the doctor.

Larry's almost got dinner ready so I'm going to run!

Morning Deck Friends!

Kelly Mama, Hehe...yep...busy with baby, I am just picture you and sweet Olivia. Time goes so fast and soon she'll be 2 months. Wow...
And I see you are logging some miles yourself with activity. How's that feeling?
And yes...I lots of planting room. The new boxes are all about 4' x 8'. and I have 12.5 of them...plus ground level area about 30' x 8. We may make that area into boxes too....So much easier on my body. lol... My fall garden is already sprouting and the 90-ish temps we have been having and will have all week will sprout my seeds for sure (As long as I keep them watered a bit) so far so good. Some I have to shade from sun...in this heat, but the boxes with PVC pipe arches over with netting make it easy to shade the 'babies' when necessary. My carrot bed and beets are up! Turnips and spinach, lettuces and leeks already babies. Cabbages and cauliflowers already about 6" high. Happy camper. Today I am roasting more tommatillos and Anaheims for more chili verde. (I freeze the leftovers. Life is pretty darn good. Grass fed, hormone free cookin...yes indeedy. You know, lard from grass fed etc...has high levels of vitamin D. Good stuff really. It's gotten a bad rap. I have several times compares rendered lard from big ag meat and grass fed etc meat...and very revealing. The big ag lard sets up hard...the grass fed...MUCH softer and more liquid. Must be the difference in our veins too eh?
Sorry I didn't make it here to play last night...darn!

Choc- OMGosh...rain again for you right? And have you recovered fro that awesome ride? An adventure right? haha...and you did it! Woohoo!

Kay- Sorry you are not feeling so well and not sleeping great either. Shoot. when do you get labs back?

Snow- Well...smoke is coming again...darn! You feeling it yet. I am ok...but gonna close up. Now we have some cool night time temps and smoke comes along...bleh.
How's Dad? Hubby? You? Thinking about you. Hope all is ok.

Kits- did you ever find a way to keep the squirrels out?? Did you try the bricks? How's the cabin coming along?

Tar- LOL...I think about you now every night while I am flossing...hahahaha...you thinking about me? How's it going?

Brenda- Class update??? You getting all that rain too?

Dan...is it already getting cold up there in your neighborhood?? I bet baby Olivia and Argus have noticed the changes. Anxiously awaiting your return. I am wondering what you are cookin!

OK...bread almost out of oven, so...onto the list go I!

You got it Kay! She's a super good baby, but it's busy! Hopefully the smoke stays away and you guys get nothing more than haze your way. did you get more moussaka made?

Did I just read that Choc rode 20 miles already! That is fast! Way to go Choc! Don't worry at all about that 5 pounds, it's for a super good cause getting rid of the diet pop and at the rate you are riding, it will melt away! Sounds like a character building ride for sure. Suffering at the time, but once you get home and recover there is that: I just did that! WOOT!

Oh my goodness Mauima, I guess I never realized exactly how much you are able to plant! That is a wonderful variety and my mouth is already watering at all the wonderful recipes you will be able to make with your inevitable bounty.

I picked up my CSA Veg today and some local, hormone free etc. Beef, sausages - I plan to do some cooking myself this week. Yum!

Tar - 22lbs! Wow! Way to go! I have about 20 post-baby pounds to work on - you've inspired me!

Dan - so nice to see you! Ready for fall?

We had an unseasonably cold day here today. 8 degrees celsius. I love Fall, but this was brisk baby!

Kits - enjoy your trip, I bet it will be beautiful!

Ok, I feel like I need to let my hair down a little bit. Get a little crazy and have some fun! Got any ideas Snow? What kind of trouble should we get up to and who wants to join?

Cheers,

Kelly

Baby calling? emoticon Got you running these days, eh K-Po?!? Nice that you got out hiking though, and a blue heron sighting, nice!

We have smoke again on the horizon, the air doesn't really smell like it, but it sure is hazy over the mountains to the south, Larry heard from the Yosemite fire. emoticon

Hi everyone!

Gardening, hiking, biking, good food - yup I'm in the right place, but boy did I miss alot while we were at the cabin.

Got my first hikes in in a loooong while. Wooo! It was exercise! Saw a couple of beautiful Blue Herons.

Oops! Thought I'd have more time to say hi, but it turns out this will be a drive by!

So great to see so many familiar faces!

That's how I usually bike, Choc! I have rarely not had to push my bike uphill at some point during the ride. And 20 miles! Wow, you have worked up quickly! emoticon

Maui, your winter garden sounds great! I'm still trying to get the most out of my tomatoes, they aren't on the "bland diet" menu this week, unless I cook them, but I should be able to enjoy them soon, I hope! Just waiting to hear from the doctor about the labs.

Got back to the gym today, felt a bit like a slug all weekend, didn't go out, didn't go to the gym, just some short walks....but it feels good to work out, so I'm glad I did. Just need to get the routine going again! emoticon

Attempted a 20 mile bike ride today ...did the first 10 in an hour, no real problems... turned around for return trip and THEN REALIZED that it was UPHILL and against the wind going back!!!!! (Ok, I'll admit the hills weren't huge and steep, but it WAS a constant "steady climb" for the first 5 miles of the return trip.... Needless to say I ended up "walking the bike" for parts of those uphill miles) thank goodness the last 5 miles were mostly a steady downhill slope!!!! So final "score" was probably biked 16 or 17 miles and walked the rest... (Note to self... Next time check the "change in elevation" BEFORE planning how many miles to bike!!!!!)

Fly by for me...

Mary- No luck so far in finding my hidden treasure...lol. I moved on to 'other things', maybe I'll remember when I am sleeping. LOL...Good thing its no emergency...

OK..

Tar- Fantastic! 22 lbs! Woohoo!

Kay- sorry about the digestive issue. Not enough Kimchi???

I have been replanting my garden for fall...quite excited really.
Bight lights swiss chard, spinach, turnips, cauliflower,2 kinds leeks, shelling peas, cabbages, lettuces, arugula, sweet potatoes and fingerling potatoes. In a few weeks the garlic goes in, and tomatoes come out, where broccoli, bok choi and more cauliflower will go. Back out go I.

Last morning for the balloons, we had some floating over the house, pretty cool! I got a shot of the "Wicked" balloon landing up the ridge, I'll see if I can post it later.

Since I'm on a "bland" diet, it's been 2 days now coffee-free (also no dairy!). I can't wait for this to be over, and I can eat what I like again, the fridge is full of off-limit food at the moment, not a lot on the menu with this one. I'll manage fine though, will have to get to the store though and find some things I can eat!

Went for a short walk yesterday, it's still good to get out!

Kay - Wow how cool is that?! - I wish the balloons would come here! Hope your labs come back great!

Tar - 22 lbs! Awesome weigh-in!

Choc - sorry to hear Diet Coke has crept back into your life but I can totally relate - hope you find an herbal tea or other drink that makes a good substitute on soda-free days so that maybe you'll be ready to cut back again soon - I use herbal teas, black teas and green teas and love infusing them with fruit - I'm lucky - the hardest part of the day for me is the morning - if I make it through that I seem to be good for the rest of the day - I think this is my 10th day soda free

Maui - How's your hidden treasure hunt going? - I have done that very same thing many times! First thing I do is sit down and think "o.k. if I were me where would I be likely to hide something" then start checking whatever comes to mind! We've had some nice rain showers - hoping you've gotten some rain too!

Enjoy the weekend!

Pura Vida! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Great job Tar! that's a nice Saturday morning surprise, but it couldn't have been that much of a surprise, you've worked for that 22 pounds!

Choc, the herbal tea isn't made with tea leaves at all. And it has no caffeine, which is why I drink it all day long. It's typically made from dried fruit, mint, or other herbs. Just check out the tea aisle you'll see what I mean. Any herbal tea should be caffeine free (the box will say so as well).

Got my labs done this morning, it was a pain to get out of the neighborhood, as it was full of cars and people watching the balloons! Some new balloons this year include a giant boot which I believe is the little old lady who lived in a shoe, and a giant pink cat. Also a big dog balloon and a chili pepper balloon (well a balloon with a bunch of chili peppers on it). And my old favorites, Darth Vadar, the soccer ball, Smokey Bear and all the rainbow balloons. It's pretty cool to be able to watch it all from the deck!

Kay... Thanks for the pep talk :-) .... Not sure if I missed the sweet taste or the "fizz", and since I usually have my "drink treat" late afternoon or early evening, I also need to avoid anything with caffeine or I'd be up all night, so not sure if tea would work even if I found something that didn't have the "tea taste or smell "... (I think my dislike of tea dates back to my childhood when my grandma's "cure" for colds or flu was either warm tea or warm ginger ale... The smell and taste of either is just a turn off for me... Although I do like really cold ginger ale... I guess it's just a mental block on my part, LOL.... On the other hand, grandma's famous chicken soup was and is always one of my favorites! I still remember watching her make homemade noodles for the soup! Yummy!!!!)....
