Choc, I love Stumpy! So creative!

Yeah, I missed yesterday as well and didn't even realize today was Cinco de Mayo! It's been crazy at work. Residents must be preparing for the full moon this weekend.

I'm in last minute prep mode for Kiddo's birthday party on Sunday. He turns 12 tomorrow and is inviting some friends to the beach on Sunday afternoon. We're very excited!

Hope everyone is having a grand week!

Maui... LOL, yup, thinking about your battles with your trees, stumps and roots is exactly why I opted to let Stumpy stay in my back yard!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Chicken Tacos, fresh salas, avocado with salt and lime, real home made corn tortillas. (I started yesterday with whole organic dried corn, soaked overnight and ground into fresh Masa today for the tortillas.
Enough for everyone!
Enjoy!

Choc- I LOVE stumpy!
Well done...yea...you know I know about roots!

Kay- I missed the 4th yesterday too!
Had a trip t my sons for an appt, new doc...
Long day yesterday. His labs are all wonky...poor guy.
They 'fix' on and another goes way off...not sure there is a solution.
Cool here too...might have a drop of rain on it's way.

OK...some of you can enjoy Tequilla (I cannot...allergic to agave)
But I have made some pitchers of Margaritas...Strawberry and Mango...enjoy!
I'll stick with the non alcohol variety today. ;)

Wood, hope you got that bathroom fixed up for mom!

Jo, I heard about that fire on NPR, and thought of you, didn't realize how close it was! Stay safe...

Choc, love the stump! You did put it to good use!

We had a small rain storm yesterday while I was at the gym, when I left it had that nice "after the rain" scent! I'm running in today, debating on whether to bring my more rain proof jacket or not.

To follow-up on my post this morning... here's "Stumpy"... Stumpy will look just dandy when his "flower-child hair" grows long enough to hang down around his face (doing this seemed so much easier than trying to remove the stump and all the roots!)

Gotta run... catch y'all later... hope everyone is having a wonderful Wednesday!

May the 4th be with you Choc!

Wood get that bathroom back together...

LOL about me singing ---never... well when people are in ear shot anyway..

Here in Ontario --my area --- we can not ---or should not-- plant outdoors till after May 2 4 weekend... to much risk of frost... so I have always waited till after to put out flowers... looks dull outside with no colour though.

Everyone have a great Wednesday..

A couple provinces over from mine they are having a raging wild fire .. and one whole town/ city is being evacuated --- Fort Mac Murray ... prayers please... or positive energy ---thanks... very scary stuff...

Nope, a poet I'm not. More like Frosty the Snowman than Robert Frost! I just like playing with thoughts sometime!

Maui - How is the digging/planting going? You do spend a lot of time being our dirty girl!

Jo - I heard you singing in the hot tub as I was approaching. You sounded good! Some sing in the shower, some of us in the hot tub!

Kay - Still my inspiration to healthy activity.

Probably won't go to the gym today. I've started replacing a bathroom fan two days ago. A simple job, I thought. One of those that grows and grows and grows. Tomorrow I'll be picking up my Mom for our Mother's Day celebration here with the family. Since it's the bathroom she uses, I figure I'd better get it back together.

Life is good!

Nice job on the deck poem, Wood, you're our own Robert Frost...

It's clouded up here, I think we're getting some more storms...pretty dramatic sky! And the wind....not my favorite, but there it is!

Cat, my mom made some nice pies too...lemon meringue and a rhubarb custard are fond memories...now we just wait for holidays to enjoy the monkey bread!

Jo, emoticon hows things up north?

I imagine Mary's out kayaking, Maui and Choc are digging or planting...Kelpie, you in the pool?

Sssshhh! What's that sound?
Everybody look what's growing 'round.
One speaks of being damp and cold that goes on and on.
Another of the desert in a glorious bloom.
The sound of thunder of last night's storms
Is but a dream in the eye's of one dealing with an impossibly eternal absence of rain.
Too much. Too little. Again today?
A universal topic.
Cliches of local colors.
Important to us all.
Stop!
Sssshhh! What's that sound?
Everybody look what's coming down!

Choc - Well happy Easter! Funny how cooking large meals can make you appreciate your parents, huh? For me it's all about the pies. My mom always made the best pies from scratch, so whenever I get that wild hair, the appreciation is there for her for sure!

Maui - Awesome work on your garden! You'll have to have us over sometime. It sounds gorgeous!

I ended up getting and ice cream Italian soda, and kiddo got two scoops of ice cream. The place we went makes AMAZING Italian sodas (with cream) but when you get ice cream in it, the ice cream acts as the cream. I got blueberry soda with white chocolate raspberry ice cream, which I mushed and mushed until it was mixed well with the soda. DELICIOUS!

Well today is going to be a pretty boring day, as my Mondays typically are. I've been falling behind on my website work, and will probably spend a bunch of time today working on that. I've started an online parent coaching business, but haven't launched it yet because I need more content. Can't open a store with nothing to sell! So I need to get a couple blogs up at least, within the next week. My freebie is up there, so I've at least got something to give away. Getting close!

I hope everyone has an awesome Monday! Get out and move!

Mary-
what fun having a house guest to chat till the wee hourss, then get up to kayak. With some friends it's just so easy to keep going and going...never wanting to miss a minute.

Kelpie- reminds me of our visit...we sure packed in a lot in the time we had. Miss you.

OK...I am happy to report...the new garden and deck drippers are complete! Moved 18 carts of mulch! haha...you all thought that was over too, eh? well...after drippers we added mulch. We also made a new pathway in a new area...cardboard down, cover with several inches of mulch.
This should help with this continued drought. I am having my veggie garden this summer. I think I was depressed last year missing it. Anyhow...feeling accomplished. Not to sore or sunburned. LOL...it hit 86 today.

Hot tub tonight???
I'll shower first...honest...no getting into to tub this dirty. emoticon

Happy Easter to you, Choc, did you make those treats again? The first ones looked so fun!

My "ice cream" lately has been the banana soft serve kind, throw a frozen banana in the food processor with some cocoa powder and it's pretty yummy!

My shin is bruised, but no rope burn this time, thanks to the long socks! Oddly my foot's been hurting since Friday night too, feels a little like a sprain, but I didn't really do anything to it...hmmmm.

Mary, glad you got your houseguest out kayaking!

Maui, running down from the ridge! emoticon

Wood, that is great news about your GS, what a relief!

Cat... The "Orthodox and Western Easters" are celebrated in many similar ways... (Lent, fasting, church services, "traditional" holiday foods, etc)The difference in dates are based in the calendars used, ... the Orthodox Churches follow the Julian calendar when calculating the date of Pascha (Easter) while the "Western" Easter dates followed by many other churches are based on the Gregorian calendar.... My family background is "Russian Orthodox", and I grew up following many of those holiday traditions... I still do to a smaller degree, but not as much as when my parents (also aunts, uncles & grandparents) were alive to keep the traditions "going" ... But I do try to practice some of the holiday traditions when I can (this was the first year I tried my hand at making some of the traditional Easter foods... Made me appreciate my mom's cooking and baking skills for sure, LOL!)

Good Morning Deckies!

Happy Easter Choc. Beautiful eggs. I think I need to resupply my egg dyes. And do this again.

Cat- Wow...BUSY! Did you say ice cream??? Wow...that's a sure fire weakness I have. I think I could live on ice cream. My rule here now...is I can only have some if I make it from organic pastured dairy and organic fruit etc...so, this has slowed my consumption. Whew.

KAy- I had another great start to my day.
Hiked up that hill again today. Second day ran the entire way back from atop the ridge! (You know the ridge) Anyhow...crazy...not sure what has gotten into me. MAybe it's your Cross Fit inspiration...
How are your shins??? Rope burns...ack!

Breakfast after the hike/run. Yep...great day. Coffee and now off to chores.

Wood... Wonderful news! How exciting for the little guy! Celebrations on the deck are definitely in order!

Wow, looks like everyone's been busy and active! Hikes, rope climbing, dancing, kayaking & getting ready for swim season! Way to go team!!!

Still chilly and rainy here...(we actually had a frost last night! I had to cover up lots of my plants overnight to hopefully help them survive...not sure if my grapes "made it"...their leaves look like the frost might have "won") ...hard to get outdoor gardening and yard work done with this weather! (I did plant 3 kind of asparagus today though in between the bouts of rain)... More rain predicted for Sunday, so I might end up doing indoor chores ... Will have to see how it goes.

Wine & hot tub time here on the deck! Let's celebrate Wood's great news!

Big excitement here in the Wood family! Most of you know that my youngest grandson, Ty, has had fpies (food protein induced endocolitis syndrome , or something like that) since birth. Since this condition would cause severe reactions to many foods that kids normally eat, he was kept on a diet limited to very few foods. Probably as a result of this he is a very tiny, but very healthy 5 year old. We were told when he was first diagnosed that many kids outgrow the condition. Well this week was a test to see if he could now tolerate all foods. He was tested at Childrens Hospital in Philadelphia. He passed with flying colors! What's his new favorite food - scrambled eggs! (he had a severe reaction to eggs a couple of years ago! Today the whole family went to a very popular breakfast buffet to celebrate his introduction to normal foods. Had his first doughnut ever and loved it! This feels terrific!

Life is good!

I'm ready to do more celebrating here on the deck!

Happy Saturday, deckies! I slept in a wee bit, made pancakes and bacon for Kiddo (strawberry protein and chia seeds and he had no clue!), had dance for 2 hours, and just got back from a haircut! Kiddo and I are about to be off to buy swimsuits and then head to the beach for a couple hours. We got some of that rain Kay was talking about last night, but it's turned into a beautiful day outside! We're off to take advantage of it. Have a great day, loves!

Hey all!

Quick post from my phone - I forgot my keyboard ):

Our friend Urs is here visiting from Geneva...I talked him into rising early & kayaking (even tho we were up til 1am talking)

He wasn't enthusiastic last night but he was so happy at lunch when he sent friends the photos I took of him pretending that he was being chased by a US aircraft carrier!

Urs is napping now & so is my hubby & hubby didn't even kayak! emoticon emoticon

Pura Vida!

Nice start to your day, Maui!

Sorry I missed the tequila and whisky night, maybe tonight we can try again, and Maui dancing burlesque in hiking boots and sun hat? Priceless! Maybe add some fringe, and you'll be right in there!

We're still cool and cloudy today, so not sure about hiking. Maybe it will warm up? I almost missed the rain yesterday, just as I got home it was coming down hard, even little balls of snow-like hail, thunder, lightening, the whole bit! Gotta love it! My garden is looking a little beat up, but hanging in there.

And I climbed the 12 ft rope at CrossFit last night 6 times! My shin is looking a little colorful today, even with wearing the ski socks...

Happy Saturday Deckies!

OK...I have to report...I had a super happy start to my day.

Hubby and I awoke at 5:30...
Dressed and drove to a local trail head and hit the trail by 6:10!
Hike up a 2 mile steep trail, the jogged most the way back...
What a fabulous way to start my day!
Watch the sunrise over he bay area...beautiful.

Great critter sightings. OK...off to chores.

Have a great day all.

Haha! Oh Maui, it would be FANTASTIC! You could use a giant sunflower as a prop, lol.

I think I need to start my morning off with a ride on the rollercoaster. Who wants to join? I'm a front car person, so keep your eyes open and throw your hands up with me!

Yes, yes, I've been taking burlesque! I had my first show about a month ago and then moved into the intermediate class. I'm dancing 6-7 hours a week now and it's certainly keeping me fit! What I love the most about it, though, is how body positive it is. It's all about loving and appreciating the skin you're in. We have all shapes and sizes in our classes AND in the professional troupe that runs the studio.

I'm gonna pass on the wine tonight - work in the morning. But tomorrow night for sure! The BF is out of town for a music festival all weekend so I'm totally free! Party on deck!

Evening Deckies!

Cat- Good to see you stop by again! Dancing eh? Remind me...what kind of dance is your special?

Choc- You feel any recovery??? Hope so.
Taking a rest day is a good idea when you feel like that.

Kay- Oh pasha...It's never too early for marshmallows. And...it's always a good day for Smores.
Did the rain hold off?
We had a sunnier day today, but still quite gusty this afternoon.

Wood- OK...good for you...1 month reset on the food etc. I am doing the same...but for 2 months already. I have been logging food. Seems to really help me...facts...you know how I am about facts.
So, how'd today go?
Oh...and sorry about the phone. Ouch. Those tile floors are hard.

Mary- haha...volunteer tomatoes! Heirlooms variety, yes? Do you know what kind? My area is going to really warm up the next few days. My tomatoes , eggplants and peppers...are going to love it.

Kelpie- What's happening in your 'neck of the woods'?

Snow- Hey there...miss you.

Lurkers...stop by and say hello. Spring is bursting everywhere...let us know what spring signs are happening in your area.

Tonight is a hot tub night for sure. I worked overhead pruning a very large climbing rose. Shoulders are asking for a nice soak. Good thing our deck hot tub has a deep end.

Oh...the wine cellar is open, I have opened a cab....but there are plenty of options for your liking. Calorie free!
Anyone want a glass?

My berries looked dead for a bit, but they are coming in green lately, Choc,so maybe yours will come out OK as well. Berries and grapes, YUM!

Cat, great to see you back on the deck! It's great that you had some time to yourself, and all that dancing! Good stuff!

Wood, you and LUV on a health kick, emoticon those adult beverages and snacks can really do a person in quickly! Nice that you are already seeing results!

Maui, it's a bit early now for marshmallows, maybe we can break out some more (s'more?) tonight!

I'll be hitting the trails to work today, 50% chance of rain...hope it holds off until I'm off the trails! We did get rain last night, but it was late.

Ended up using paint for the trellises ...
Was going to go for stain but a friend offered a whole gallon of unused paint in the color I was thinking of ... And "price was right", FREE!!!! Couldn't turn down that sweet deal, LOL... So the trellises are now green, and they actually "blend in" nicely to the surrounding garden & yard

Still too early in our season to plant much (we can get frosts right up to mid or late May)... But I did plant the raspberries, blackberries and 2 kinds of grapes ) berry plants might need "replacements" tho,... I think they might not have survived their dormant period at the store (gonna wait a week or so to see if they "come back")

Really tired today for some reason (not sleepy-tired, more like just exhausted feeling... ) Might be all the pine tree planting and post hole digging that's catching up to me... Oh well, gonna rest a bit then maybe mow the lawn (riding mower should help prevent feeling more tired)

Catch y'all later... Choc

I started dance back in September, but was only going one day a week. Then it went to two, then three, and then all of a sudden I found myself purchasing the unlimited monthly pass at the studio! Lol It is certainly a lot of fun and keeps me challenged and in shape.

Kudos on the weight loss, Wood! Now that you mention it, I think I did notice something missing last night. emoticon

Welp, my day is about to kick off with three hours of training, so I'd better get to it. I'm looking forward to hitting the farmer's market this evening with Kiddo and BF. Our neighborhood has a weekly market that is conveniently from 6-10 p.m. so I can actually attend with my work and extracurriculars schedule!

Happy Wednesday!

Good morning OP!

You know after I said to Choc yesterday that I didn't see her bad weather coming our way, sure enough my computer starts flashing severe storm warnings at me! However, we didn't get a single one! We did get some rain, but nothing "severe".

I forgot to mention that I destroyed my cell phone the other day. Dropped it on our ceramic kitchen floor. Opps! Totally out of commission! Presently using an old one of Luv's which is okay but the sound doesn't work and I don't always notice the vibration!

Welcome back Cat! Sounds like you're as active as ever! I don't remember the dancing thing. Is that new? Great job for a fitness buff!

Watch out for that duck! Duck!!! Phew! Nope never had that happen, but once in a tree stand, dressed in camo I had a hawk take a swipe at me!!! My theory is that he thought my beard was a squirrel!!! Much too close for comfort!

Yep, when turkeys are in the mood, they're not very discreet! Now that you mentioned it, I realized I haven't heard ours this spring. That's too bad. They make me smile as well. Saw quite a few down in Georgia though!

Both Luv and I have decided to work on some serious weight loss this month (now that we don't have any big travel plans for the month. No adult beverages, no snacks and lots of exercise. Not even a week into it I'm happy to say we're off to a great start! Hope you noticed in the hot tub that some of my belly has been disappearing!

Honeysuckle is truly one of springs greatest smells! Forget the roses! Bring on the honeysuckle!

Stain or paint? Not an expert, but I'd go with a good quality deck stain. They're made to withstand harsh outdoor use.

Moving on!

Life is good!

Wood

DECKIES!!!!

I really should make it a point to stop by more often. I missed all the campfire stories last night! Maui's got the marshmallows out again tonight, though, and I'm there!

I've been busy with work and dance. I've been dancing 7 hours a week - whew! It's a serious workout, though. Abs, glutes, thighs, triceps - always sore! And with work, I've actually been hustling at my side gig (I edit novels for a publishing company on the side) in order to pay for a trip to London in August, so pretty much every moment of down time has been churning out novels so I can rake in the dough and get this plane ticket purchased. I'm also working on a personal business venture and trying to find time for that during this hustle has been difficult. I'm actually wondering if I ought to just put that on hold until I can slow down my editing hustle. Sigh.... The busy life.

Still finding time for me, though (dance). And this past weekend was a ton of fun - first weekend in YEARS when I haven't had a partner or child relying on me for ANYTHING. I spent the entire weekend hanging out with people and the freedom to do so without worrying about someone expecting me home or needing to stick to some schedule or micromanage violin practicing, was just glorious. It was a very much-needed me-weekend.

I'll try to drop back in here sooner than 3 months from now! I miss you all. Hugs!

Kay- Wow...had to duck from a duck. That's a first. Never heard that one before.
Yes...your boy can cook too! Lucky you.

But you are right about Choc's stain or paint...I don't know either...but which ever would wear better. With all that rain , I am uncertain.

OK...I got marshmallows out, ready to roast. I am in the mood...lol.

Ha, ha, my boy is cooking for me!

My surprise? almost got clocked in the head by a duck! He was off like a rocket, and I almost had to "duck" to miss him! emoticon

Choc, paint or stain? Whichever lasts longer, looks best, and will protect the posts best, so maybe paint?

It got cold again today...but I think we're getting rain, not snow the next couple of days.

Mary- Nice yak stop!
Yes...that wine was special. Gosh...we are lucky to have such a well stocked cellar.

My hike buddy and I too off on a spur of the moment hike! Not many chores got done, but...we put on 6+ hilly beautiful miles...
Best part was the turkeys again...lol..even though it was late morning...they we gobbling away...made us giggle. Must be spring. ;)

We also just missed a rattle snake. We do live in rattle snake country. This one was out sunning itself, the raced to teh cover of grass. Wish I had a closer look.

OK...Out I go...then,Mary...I'll need to be cookin for my 'boy' too!

Wood... if we got storms last night I slept right through them! (must have been all that digging wore me out big time, LOL!) It did rain during the night though so I don't need to worry about watering any flower beds or new pine tree transplants :-)

Here's a pic of the fence posts I set for trellises

(debating if I should paint or stain them a dark green to "blend in" with nature a bit more? .... Any opinions on that?)

Quote of the day, "Reality is a fine place, but...."! That made me smile Maui! You know I agree! As good a place as the real world can be, it's still nice to let ourselves become like children again and just let our imaginations take us to beyond the every day world. One of my biggest heroes is Walt Disney! What a wonderful imagination he had and just look how he brought out the child in all of us! May we never get to old to dream!

Which brings me to Mary's friend. Mary I think it's great that you were able to lead her into a whole new world of adventure! Conquering our fears of "the deep" is exhilarating and increases our potential for adventure exponentially!

Choc - Glad you're turning your property into what you want it to be! Pines grow so quickly! So did you get the storm? We don't have that one in our forecast.

Maui - Didn't dig any trenches yesterday, but filled one in that I made quite some time ago! Got a good start getting back into my exercise routine!

Kay - I've always been a little jealous of your early snows, but the late ones - not so much!

Seize the day!

Deckies!

You are all the best besties!

Dan- OMG...you sure know how to feed a girl who loves to work and eat!

Wood- You got that right! Digging, trenching,...that exercise is what make me so hungry!
Great kinda work.

Mary- Yay...you got out paddling again! And your friend...hehe...Love it. Brings extra joy watching someone have such a connection with the out of doors.
Goosies...yep...Wood and Luv are great examples of kind and loving, fun and crazy people. You'd really like Luv.

Kay-It was another super windy day. we are supposed to get rain on Wednesday.
Squirrels...traps! Add traps to your game. Those squirrels are little rascals. I bait with peanutbutter and peanuts in the shell...it works.

Choc- haha...you are on a digging roll too! Your excitement is evident and wonderful.
Berries, wine and fire...
You bet!

I'll bring extra wine...there ought to be good stories...
Who else wants a pour?

emoticon Wood! Reading about your work at Vashti gave me goosebumps - the kind you get when you hear about people going above and beyond to help others - you, Luv, the other nomads & the staff are truly amazing!

Dan -what a great breakfast!

Choc - hope the storm is more gentle than predicted!

Kay - good luck outwiiting those rascally squirrels!

Maui - water volleyball - great idea!

Fabulous paddling today! Within 10 minutes we were accompanied by a large dolphin! My friend said "this is a dream come true!" Dolphin were all around - not hanging out as a pod -mostly solo fishing for breakfast but we think we saw at least one mom with her baby! It's hard to believe my friend never left the pond before Saturday she was so at ease today on water that was "big" and deep (50+ feet). She is so excited to have found her outdoor "thing"!

Ok Choc I'll join you. emoticon

Cheers & Pura Vida!

Wood, welcome back! Love the report of your trip, sounds great!

Mary, so great to hear your friend is feeling good, and ready for another paddle, hope you find a trail on that island!

Maui, are you getting the rain too? We're supposed to get a little practically all week long, and I'm happy to see they took the snow off the forecast!

Choc, hope you get your spruce! Nice job on the trellis work!

Well, I got my little garden in, hope the squirrels stay away long enough for me to figure out how to fence it!

Wow everyone is so busy this spring! It's hard to believe this is the last week of April.
Kay really snow is in the forecast...three years ago it snowed 4" here in N Idaho on my daughters birthday June 10th lol.

Aw some project WOOD...LOVE GRITTS! We spent the weekend out to our camp enjoying and and working on the outdoor kitchen along with eating out of the oven, 90 second pizza's on Saturday night and yesterday morning we built a biscuit dough in the bottom of a 12" cast frying pan layered with cheese leftover potatoes sausage bacon pepperchini's and fresh chicken eggs cracked on top, 15 min later out of the WOODfired oven why not top it with sausage gravy...we packed and split fireWOOD for a while afterwards lol

Enjoy Dan

Wood!!! Welcome back!!! We missed you!!!

Digging... Yup, spent my weekend doing that too... 20 Norway Spruce planted... 4 big fence posts set in my garden for grape trellis (have to dig & set four more today for raspberry & blackberry trellises... Plus I'm hoping I can buy 1 more spruce to plant in my front yard (the Conservation Agency that was filling preorders last weekend will be selling "unclaimed" trees today, so hopefully I can get one)

Was going to plant my grape seedlings today but they are predicting big storms with possible hail tonight so I think I'll wait for tomorrow to do that.

Have a super Monday everyone... Let's all gather around the bonfire tonight to hear Wood's stories... I'll bring some wine!

Good morning OP! Looks like a gorgeous day here in PA!

Yep, Maui, I definately thought of you while I was trenching. I know you take your digging very seriously. I'll tell you what - it's a great type of exercise!!!!

On most Nomad projects we have to provide our own meals. Not so at Vashti! They fed us 3 meals a day on all work days! ....and I mean they fed us!!!!! All of it, great southern cooking, which of course meant a lot of grits and fried food! Now we almost never eat fried food, but I've got to say it was all amazing and they never repeated a meal on us the entire time we were down there! Now however, we do have a few more pounds that need to come back off! I'm not worried, it's spring and there's lots of exercise to be had!

Have a great day everyone!

Wood- Welcome home!
You trip sounds like a very fulfilling experience.
Every part of it...work partners, showing those kids someone cares and there is hope, super fun playtime, gorgeous journey down and back...perfect.
Thank you for sharing.

Oh yes...hubby and I are serious diggers.
LOL...

Been digging even while you were gone.

Mary, how about some water volleyball in the pool??

Wood- Then, I am very ready for some hot tub time. Wine too! (Of course) and your stories never bore me. Bring it on.
I want to hear it all.

Hey Deckies! I'm back!

Wow! I have a lot of catching up to do!

I just got back from 3 weeks of volunteer work at the Vashti Center in Thomasville, GA. I wish we could actually all sit around a campfire together so that I could really give you an idea of what an incredible experience this was! For me to tell you about it here on the Deck, I'd have to type pages!

Gloria and I are not new to volunteer work and we've worked on several NOMAD projects in the past, but this one really moved us!

The Vashti Center is a rather large campus made up of many buildings, some of them Victorian beauties. The center serves a pretty good number of kids who have been pretty well trashed by their lives so far. Many of them were probably abused, many of them were probably lived in a loveless family, if any family at all, some of them are very angry and all of them are there because of court orders. The staff at Vashti tries to turn their lives around and some actually make it! The staff from the dorm counselors to the administration, to the maintenance man to the cooks are all there for the kids and they're all amazing people!

Our job there was not working with the kids, although we were in contact with them a lot. We were there to provide help with the maintenance of the buildings and the campus. We repaired walls and ceilings, we painted walls and repaired furniture. We worked on lighting throughout the campus and installed new lighting where necessary (which in one case mean digging one long trench! Could have used you, Maui!) We did a major cleaning of the kitchen . We did plumbing and we repaired doors and windows! We uncovered, cleaned and prepped a swimming pool that hadn't been used in 2 years! We did an unbelievable amount of work in those 3 weeks. (Yes, I'm bragging!)

To make it even a more incredible experience everybody on this team (5 couples, all retired) meshed together instantly! So when we weren't working we were playing. We did everything together! We played a lot of Catch Phrase. We sat around campfires and sang. We had many Top Toss tournaments. We played disc golf at a really nice course at a park we could walk to. We had 2 movie nights. We went out for a couple of meals. We toured a southern mansion. Happy hour was indeed happy. We laughed, and we laughed and we laughed! It was wonderful. 4 out of 5 couples (including us) have already signed up to work at Vashti again next spring. The one couple that didn't sign up has prior commitments.

Icing on the cake - Vashti is a 1000 miles away from our little house here in PA, but the trip down and back was blessed with natural beauty that went through a transition from early spring here to early summer there. We went from the early greening to amazing displays of rosebuds in Virginia to a full bloom of roses in Thomasville. How can you beat a trip like this? On the way home part of I-77 was closed due to a tractor trailer accident. We were given great advice for a work around by a very knowledgeable woman in the Virginia Welcome Center. She suggested we head north via The Blue Ridge Parkway. It was beautiful and there was almost nobody on the road!

I could go on and on, but I think it's time I catch my breath!

Anybody up for a glass of wine and a hot soak? I'll try not to bore you with too many stories!

Life is good!

Good afternoon!

Maui and Jo - love your wildlife sightings!

Kay - more snow - now that is crazy!

Awesome news here - my friend feels great today! (She has a bad hip/back & will be seeing an ortho soon. We were worried her body might not be happy after the paddle.) She's ready to go again so we have an excursion planned for in the morning! Exploring a small creek that google maps shows winding into an island on the other side of the river...looks like it meanders by some nice trails...I'm hoping to find a place where we can pull the kayaks out and hike a little! There are also some nice restaurants less than a mile away from the creek...tide won't let us stay for lunch tomorrow - but maybe another time!

How about some beach volleyball on deck tonight? Beach season is upon us and I could use some intense cardio!

Off to take Harry for a late afternoon stroll then contemplating a sunset paddle...

Pura Vida!

Good Sunday Morning Deckies!

OK...already home from an early hike...lol...(Around here some of the best trails have a super small parking lot), Gotta get parked before dawn. Makes for an early run up teh hill. Great or me. Deer, bob cat,turkeys...yep...and us! Great morning.

Kay- We have 2 rain barrels now...might get more. Hmm...quinoa ...have not ried that with oatmeal. OK...let us know!

Jo- ahhhhh...turtle lovers here for sure. Snorkeling in Kauai is a favorite activity for me. y hubby is the 'turtle whisperer'...he rarely goes for an ocean swim there without a turtle coming by to say hi.

OK...garden dripper project continues...

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Definitely will wait on the warmer temp plants, we're supposed to maybe get a little snow on Monday....more rain today, and again later in the week, my rain barrel runneth over! (If only I actually had a rain barrel...)

Jo, love the turtle!

I've got a new breakfast recipe in the crockpot, steel cut oats and quinoa...hope it turns out! I also threw some wheat germ and cracked wheat in there (from another recipe I had for crockpot oats).

I'll be out in the garden again once the sun comes out....gotta finish this part of the project.
