Morning Deckies!
Yep, still morning out here.

Kay- OK...Good to hear you are still icing...I try and ice much longer than I think necessary to keep the region supported. Yep! Your plan seems good. And Daffodils! Yes! What the vermin leave alone gets a vote from me. Glad you made it too the weekend. Looks like snow up there! Yay!

Mary- You are so right...Lots of volunteerism by this group. My list looks similar to yours. (Lots of school committees, breast cancer walking fundraiser events, 4H, elder visitation, and currently NAMI, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). Volunteering in our local community helps us feel connected and contributing yes?
Velma...you were very blessed. But you know, the other half of this story is how you see what she had to 'teach'. How often do folks miss the message? That you for sharing. Your son's class...hmmm...so many girls! Does he like the balance? IS this a trend?

Wood- you are right about how Mary is teaching/mentoring us too.
3 hour hike, photos...I can't wait to see what you choose. I kinda know what you mean, about wondering if you captured what you hoped for after 100 shots. This has happened to me, often. I bet as this class continues...you will develop serious skills to find more of what you seek. (I do believe even 'real' photographers' take a zillion pics and review a LOT and add post processing. So, you prob did great!

KB-A weekend adventure! YAy! BTW, I just looked at you pics....I Love them! Hand stands...haha...you rock!

Choc- I am so happy to hear you are dreaming of adventure cause relief from sub zero is on its way! You sounds ready!

Brenda- you are inspiring me! Almost 30lbs...wow! Let's keep at this...we can do it!

Oh I have got to run!
Catch you all later!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Wood - hee-hee, I was just smiling thinking about what Aunt Velma would say if you called her "Selma"...I think she would take your hand and say "Wood, dear, Selma is a lovely name, but I am Velma." Loved the description of your abandoned photo location! Sorry you have yet another funeral to attend. emoticon

So much impressive volunteerism by this group! When my son was born I was able to cut back to part-time employment for 9 years and served on my share of boards during those years (children's hospital, tennis tournaments for breast cancer, 5k's, etc) and of course lots of volunteering at schools. I kind of burned out on meetings. Although they are necessary to have successful events I'd rather do the grunt work than the planning so these days the limited volunteering I do is signing up for shifts at events. There is a community issue that is nagging at me greatly these days however so there may be meetings in my future.

Maui - watching bread! love it! Can't wait til I have access to freshly ground flour!

Kay - ouchie! hope your pains go away completely soon! Have a great workout!

Choc - planning summer trips! Yippee!

Brenda - Great job on LMS! You are so focused!

KB - Another week of school behind you! Hope you're up to some more fun stuff this weekend!

Thank you all for your support with my little travel ball drama!

DS left early yesterday morning for AP biology school trip to Clemson University. He gets back Saturday night. He was really looking forward to the trip. Hubby and I are pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that there are 23 girls and 4 boys in the sophomore AP bio class! emoticon

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Pura Vida! emoticon

I'm sitting on an ice pack at the moment, but my back/hip/leg/sciatica pain has been better the past couple of days. I've been getting up at least once an hour at work and walking, as well as avoiding twisting (especially during my yoga). Wood, I don't do yoga daily, but I try to get in a practice at least 4 or 5 days a week. It really helps a lot! emoticon

Mary, your aunt sounds delightful, what a great tribute to her. emoticon emoticon

Wood, another funeral? Sorry to hear that too... emoticon

Maui, yep daffodils! Not in my yard (although I should try planting some this fall, I've heard the squirrels don't like them so much as they love the tulips!) but I do love seeing them around, just wish it wasn't so early! I may have to give up on my ski dreams for this season...

Brenda hope the meeting with your nutrition counselor goes well! Ask lots of questions!

I rescheduled my training from Monday to today, so I'm looking forward to that this afternoon! emoticon

Happy Friday!!!

Kay - Daffodils? I can't imagine. The past couple of mornings we've still been getting dustings of snow and tonight's low if 4.

Maui - Thanks for the ride! that was a blast. Weekend plans?

Mary - What a great tribute-she sounds like a fantastic lady, I'm glad you found what you were looking for in her inspiration.

Wood - Sorry to read about another funeral. I'm glad you found your abandoned place! Sounds neat. We have plenty of them here in Central PA. Have you been to the White Cliffs of Conoy yet? I did the walk a couple weeks ago and along the way is an abandoned quarry.

Choc - Isle Royal-that's on my bucket list. I enjoy reading Nevada Barr's novels and I think 2 of her books are set there.

I hope you all have a great weekend! I'm celebrating being only .4 pounds away from 30 pounds lost since 12/1. This afternoon I meet with my nutrition counselor for the first time. YAY!

Mary - What a wonderful tribute to Aunt Selma! Well written and heart-felt! I wonder how many of us were lucky enough to have an "Aunt Selma" in our lives? It's great that she was able to be such a huge influence in you. Now you get the opportunity of influencing others. Which by the way, you've already been doing here! emoticon

I went for a three hour hike on Wednesday to try and get my "abandoned" pictures. There's an area up in Harrisburg that has been set aside as a "park" which is the site of an old iron works that has pretty much gone back to nature, with only some walls, crumbling foundations, piles of slag, a few big cylinders of iron and an railroad bridge all being consumed by vines, trees and other vegetation! I took over 100 pictures, but I'm not sure I got what I was looking for. Didn't see a single person even thought this area is well within the city limits. Not even boot tracks in the snow. Just deer tracks and, oh yeah, about 50 robins joined me! Now that's promising!

Kay - Hips and back any better? I have found that as long as I do my 15 minutes or so of yoga in the morning I have very few issues. However, what usually happens to me is then when I've been feeling really well for a while, I get lazy and don't bother. Yep, you know what happens next. So I'm glad you made me think of this because I've been ignoring my yoga time lately and although I have no issues at the time, I need to get that back in my routine before I have problems again.

Okay, time to take a ride on "Life" and get my life back in action! Glad to have so many of you join me on this ride.

Peace!

Hi all... Looks like I've missed a lot since my last post... Wasn't getting the usual Spark email notices when new posts were made (went through the "no notices" a few months ago, then for awhile they started up again and now it's back to none again... Love Sparks, but sometimes wish the site was more consistent on how it works...) anyway I did read back to my last post, but since I've missed so much I'm pretty much going to start over) :-/

Maui, yes looking forward to March and "hopefully" the end of this bitter cold (we're actually supposed to "warm up" to the low 30s next week .. Will seem like a heat wave after all this below zero stuff!) ....

All the posts about backpacking encouraged me to start planning a couple backpacking trips I've been looking forward to for this summer... Spent one of our below zero days going through my "stash" of park maps & books picking routes and campsites... Also have dates and length of both trips pretty much figured out (first trip hopefully 5 days "semi-local" then another "more ambitious" trip back to Isle Royale National Park later in the summer for 10 days) ...

Brenda.... We also had some local "fights" to stop a pipeline from going through our area too... Luckily between all the local opposition and votes against it the pipeline route was defeated (I wasn't really "involved" in the fight, but did vote against the route and very happy it didn't come through our area! Would have adversely affected a lot of local farms and woodland areas here!)

Wood... Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for your "abandoned" photo assignment! (How about old barns? Old machines? Old toys?)

Gotta go let my dogs back in... Still too cold out for them to stay outside more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time. BRRRrrrr !

Good morning deck!

I drove my mom and a cousin who flew in from Tennessee 2 hours north yesterday for the funeral for one of the sweetest people ever, my Aunt Velma, she was 94. My mom had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Mom was next to youngest and is the only sibling left and now only one sister in law is left. Aunt Velma's first husband was my mom's oldest brother. He passed away suddenly in 1971. Aunt Velma remarried and she and her second husband always came to our family gatherings. She never met a stranger and took a true interest in everyone she met. She always chatted with every employee in the super market and knew the details of each of their lives...so much so that they always invited her to their employee Christmas parties! She was very active in her church and just truly cared about everyone. She was also poised, gracious and bombshell gorgeous. She never stepped out of her house without being perfectly put together. Before taking friends to meet his mother my cousin would always tell them, "You are about to meet my mother. There is one thing of which we can be certain. She will be over dressed for any occasion."

Aunt Velma helped me change my life. At our family reunion in July of 2012 a group of us was gathered and as usual the conversation was about how wonderful Aunt Velma looked (at 91!). She told us all "You have to love yourself." Those words really struck me. At the time I was 40 pounds heavier that I am now and was trying to find the motivation to get myself healthier. For weeks I kept thinking of Aunt Velma's words and realized I was not loving myself in a very important way. I was not loving myself nutritionally - although I was feeding mostly healthy food to my family I was eating mostly processed junk. On August 1, 2012 I made a commitment to love myself more by eating better and exercising. A good friend joined me on the journey and we had a LMS type weigh in challenge for 9 months. Thanks to my friend and the words of my dear aunt I am so much healthier now than I was in 2012.

Love yourselves today and every day dear friends!

emoticon

Peace,
Mary

OK...
'Life' is warmed and ready!
Wood, Kay and Maui...in the front car!
Woot woot!

I think maybe 4 laps around, OK?
Kay...you can squeeze in the middle and we will keep your hips/low back protected, OK?

Great way to start the Day!
Let's go!

Kay- I hope your hip/back/sciatica pain heals...quickly, and completely! Sitting too long...yep...can exacerbate the issue for sure.Ice...good for you! Daffodills??? What??? Mine are just now blooming...what a year!

Wood- Yes, sounds like the winter has been rough in many ways...hugs my friend. So...photo hw...abandoned...what you going to try?
Yes...one of these days...we'll be retired. And we'll be looking for you and Luv on a trip. :)

Brenda- the work you have done on this whole pipeline ...amazing. I know it's been a LOT of work, but you have been a voice for many who could not speak out. Your community is really blessed to have you. But...having said this, I am super excited too that you are balancing self care and volunteerism...right? These are huge challenges for us who cannot pretend we don't see the need in our community. When we are healthy and at our best...we have the most ability to give. Always a challenge.

Hobbes- how are this week? Not too busy I hope. Are you seeing the signs of spring too?

DB- OK...weekend is upon us...what you have planned??

Choc- hey...March is on its way...can you sense any relief? What are you planning for when you can get out more??? Do you have a list? A list you can march down when the snow goes? What's at the top of your list?

Hey everyone else...stop in and tell us what outdoor activity you have right ready when the days warm. What are you dreaming about??

And...tomorrow is Friday folks...LMS ...so make today a good one.
Get out, even for just a bit if you can...you will feel better if you do...
Outside makes every day better. Period.

And enjoy the ride...on Life.
Join us!

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Okay, missed the ride last evening, but I'm ready to start my day with jumping on! Let's see where "Life" takes us today!

That being said, I've got another funeral to go to on Saturday. I don't really know the man, but his wife sings bass with me in the choir and she's a wonderful person. Seems he was shoveling snow on Sunday and had a heart attack. His neighbors found him and rushed him to the hospital but he didn't make it. Been a rough winter!

Brenda - I think it's great that you've done all of that volunteer work. People that have not had the opportunity to just serve have no idea of how good it makes you feel!

Yep, Maui, you two would enjoy NOMADS too, I'm certain.

Lots to do, but first that ride!

"Life" is good!

I've been getting "Backpacker" magazine (for free, it just keeps coming to the house, I think originally from Sierra Trading Post) and they have lots of great backpacking advice, and gear reviews. I think they have content online as well, would be a good resource for tips on lightening up.

Also, Cheryl Strayed has a podcast called "sugar" like an advice column only audio. I listened to the first one, and she's very insightful!

Now that the promo part of my post is done....

My back/hip has been better! Thanks, Brenda, I've been noticing the lack of "twinges" the past day or so, so I think the ice and getting up at least every hour from my desk and walking around has been helping!

Mary, hope that coach was just busy and you hear back soon, it would seem if your son already had a commitment to another team that should be honored, and he should respect that if he is a respectable coach, and if not, well, too bad for him! You wouldn't want that kind of roll model for your boy anyway!

Wood, hope you have nicer weather than predicted for your NOMAD run!

I'm walking in to work today, Tuesday was pretty nice, if chilly (well for lately). Did I mention I've been seeing daffodils blooming around here? emoticon

Is that coaster warmed up yet, Maui? I'd like a ride in the front please! emoticon

Choc-I would TOTALLY be like Cheryl in WILD. I was dying laughing when she was packing her pack, same when I read the book. I see a lot of me in her-or at least, the old me in the old her. Good luck! Time to train.

Maui-Thank you SO MUCH for the suggestions. After I broke my back I honestly thought I would have to give up my dream of ever backpacking, but I agree I could do it modified. Plus, if I take the pups with me they could wear their packs and take some gear. However, they're both sleeping next to me, so I'm not seeing much ambition in them right now. Homemade bread sounds scrumptious. I've been noshing on some "homemade" bread that I got at an organic food stand at our central market this past weekend. I put on it some PB2 and honey. MMmm.

MrsSand-I wish you well in the competitive sports with your son-sounds like a racket sometimes.

Desert-way to go on getting in the extra biking!!

Kay-How's your back feeling today? I hope it's improved. Ugh back pain is the WORST.

Wood - I do miss a lot!! NOMADS sounds amazing. I spent much of my youth volunteering, oh heck, I have spent most of my adulthood volunteering. I grew up mennonite and attended a BIC youth group, so we went on Mennonite Disaster trips to Kentucky, Puerto Rico, North Carolina and I also did some work at a mentallly handicapped camp in Ohio one year. I really miss the hands on stuff from roofing to dry wall. In my adulthood I've focused more on donating my time and marketing/fundraising resources with a Mennonite Central Committee concert fundraiser for Haiti (where i met my hubby) and also with lots of cancer related stuff. Now I'm donating a ton of time fighting 42" natural gas pipeline project coming within 1/4 mile of my home. I think when you get volunteering in your blood it never leaves. I know Maui is that way too. Good for you!! Hubs and I have often talked about owning a food truck tied into his mom's sauce business and then taking it to places that have experienced disasters to serve free meals. Maybe someday! I'll be sending warm vibes your way and safe travels. I imagine you meet some amazing people on those trips.

It's WARM today. Above freezing I mean. In the sun my car thermometer actually read 43. I finally got the exterior of my car washed. It's so nice not to have salt on my pants everytime I get in and out of the car now. Have a great evening everyone! I'm up for a ride!

Afternoon Deckies!

Mary and Wood- Yep...Youth teams of any kind where parents are involved...can be quite rough. I spent over 25 years in 'Youth Development' and working with and training the parents was always the hardest part of my job. Mary...thinking about you as you traverse this issue...Meh.

Wood- rutted tracks...ack! But oh goodness...a beautiful day. Always makes it worth it. Rarely...once I am out and about do I regret being outside.
Hmmm...abandoned...lots of images are running through my mind. Anxious to hear what you have photographed.
Nomads sound like my kinda folks. Maybe one day hubby will retire and we can join up ....what fun! Talk about a feel good activity in so many levels.

KB-Wood is right about the attitude. This is one of the things I love about this grou in general...great spirit. No matter what age, or circumstance...this is a group of get up and go...as best they can.
Always looking for the next adventure. Looking forward...
Seeing the beauty in the moment.

(Oh btw...I made bread again today)...and was just giggling at myself at how I can watch the bread with such awe...every time.
This part of the magic of life I think...
Snow like when we hike...always an amazing adventure in every way...nature, sky, conversation...so much to 'take in' every time!
Life ...

Hey...speaking of 'Life'...I think its time for a spin!
Anyone else ready for a ride?

Mary, first of all, I've got to say that I'm an extremely competitive person! I like to play! I like to play hard! ...And I like to win! Now that being said, youth sports have always driven me nuts! My boys participated in a lot of them growing up: soccer, baseball, basketball, and track and field. I took my turn at coaching both soccer and baseball. Now, to me, we're to teach the kids a love of the game, but too often we give the impression that winning is a must, no matter what, and that, I think, is wrong! One of my sons played on a 10 year old little league team where the coach would yell endlessly at the kids if they made an error, struck out or any other kind of mistake. He'd call them a bunch "of girls" and would belittle them unmercifully! Finally, some of the mothers of the players, confronted him and he quit. Acutally what he said was "if you think you can coach better, you do it!" I took over. I told the team that we weren't going to win any championships anymore that year, but we were going to have fun playing. We won most of the games after that and EVERY kid played! It bothers me a lot when a coach, like your son's, forgets that at this stage of the game is to teach the love of the game, not to do that "either play for me now or kiss your high school position good-bye" routine! However, I'm afraid, that's a behavior that I kids have to deal with as well. You're doing the right thing by encouraging him to stick to his commitments. I also love that you're out there being the supportive volunteer Mom! You go Mom!

Got out for some more skiing yesterday but the trails were awful! All rutted up and iced over! I did wonder into the campground area and left the trails. There it was much better! Hey! At least, I was outside! It was cold, but I was dressed for it; making a lot of my own body heat and it really was a beautiful day.

Maui - This week's photo assignment is "abandoned". Haven't worked on it yet, but I have a few ideas.

KB - Love your ambition and your attitude. It'll take you far in life!

Brenda - "What is NOMADS?" See what happens when you don't hang around with us for a while, you miss out on some of the important information!
No, I'm glad you asked because I'm pretty sure none of the other newbies with us know that either. In a nutshell, NOMADS is an organization supported by the Methodist church, although a lot of us are not Methodists. Most of us have RV's and are retired and like to travel. Most important, is we want to be retired, but still be active and want to make a difference in this world so we go out and do organized volunteer work. We have a headquarters that organizes project all over the United States. Some of it is disaster relief work. Some of it is doing repairs and preps at camps, some of it is work in distribution centers that supply needed cleaning supplies, clothing, school supplies to areas hit by floods, tornados, and other kinds of mega disasters. It is the most ambitious and fun loving group of retired people that you will ever meet! With them, I've helped renovate a two apartment house that provided temporary housing for families (but unfortunately had been trashed), I've helped build a staircase up the side of a mountain at a camp that works with youth volunteers that go out into the community in rural Smokies, I've filled buckets with cleaning products that were distributed to an area that was hit by a flood, I've built school desks for the children in Haiti and I attended a conference in Branson that brought together 350+ NOMADS for one amazing week! Some NOMADS spend their entire year moving from one project to another living in their RV's full time!

Gotta go!

Have a great day everyone!

Deckies have some great suggestions for packing up! One of the reasons love this team and their active participation not only on the boards but out in real life. I'm hoping to get a few days camping during Spring Break next month, need to get my gear organized.

Hope everyone had a terrific Tuesday.....it's been rainy, off and on the last two days. I did a few extra miles on my bike and ran 4mi on the treadmill, did couple sets of push up, 15 reps.

Hey everyone! emoticon

Maui that's some excellent backpacking advise! I would love to backpack but my family won't go for it. They're not as outdoorsy as me. emoticon

Weather is the talk of the town here as well. School cancelled today...raining since yesterday...nothing frozen yet temp is hanging at exactly 33...if it drops roads will be very dangerous because they are so wet...I'm at work and keep stepping outside to check things out...if I feel any sleet or see any snowflakes I am closing up shop and heading home!

Changed my profile pick to last year's travel team! This is usually a fun time of year...transition from high school basketball to travel basketball and get to reconnect with coaches, players and parents that we don't see much of when it's not travel season (last year 10 players from 8 different area schools)...but this past week has been more stress than fun because Joe's high school coach called me to say he was going to coach a travel team of 10th graders and wanted Joe to play for him...well we had already committed to the other coaches and I'm team mom again this year so I had to tell the 6' 7" Irish Catholic New Yorker coach that Joe won't be playing on his travel team...I emailed him the news on Sunday and he hasn't responded...yikes...but even if this costs Joe a spot on the varsity team next year (which another mom told me she thinks will happen) it was the right thing to do...(but it's still giving me a huge headache because I tend to over-react to things that involve my kid!)...hopefully coach will send a very gracious response in a day or so and I will feel better about the whole situation...

Lots of bball volunteer time over the weekend...concession stand shifts at the high school and signing players in at travel team try outs...

Wishing warmer weather for you in the east! emoticon and precipitation for you in the west! emoticon emoticon

Pura Vida!
Mary

Morning all,
OK...Wood- LOL...weather talk is not too boring for me, it's just been a weird spell. Not often is it like this, eh?
And wow..yes...I hope it warms when you get on your way for the Nomad trip...sheesh.
How about your photo homework? What's the assignment this week?

Pack weight...
Kay- 50-60 lb packs...yep I have done this too. When out kids were little my pack hovered between 60-65...but we had extra weight due to young children with us.

Choc- I remember your pack challenges...hehe...some pictures were priceless.

Brenda- Backpacking ...some of my favorite lifetime memories.
#1- good boots.
#2- Well fitting pack. Must try on packs with weight in them! The weight of your pack must be carried on the hip belt.
#3-Keep pack light! Period. For you, with you back history, I'd target 35 lb max! Have clothes that convert and layer. Change of undies and sock, gloves...rain poncho that covers you and your pack.
#4- how will you take care of water needs?

We all think we need more than we do. We can survive in dirty clothes...honest...Socks and undies are the only thing you need extra.

Google away...start training now! Carry weight in your pack every weekend between now and then to allow your small muscles adapt to the weight. Hike with your backpack. add weight each week.Success comes from allowing your body to prepare. No shocks! lol...

I am soooooooooo excited for you!

Kay... Yup on even weighing clothes that go on your pack! Another way I've managed to cut down on backpack weight is after every trip as I unpack I set aside the items I didn't use (or seldom used) and then try to leave those items behind the next time I go backpacking... I also look at the items I actually "DID" use to see if I can substitute something lighter weight for each of those
.... The internet has lots of sites with good tips for "light weight" backpacking, although I don't think I'll ever get to the real "ultra ultra lightweight" backpacker stage ... But I have been able to lighten the load a bit more each trip :-)

Ha, I can rarely get my pack less than 50 pounds! When we did the 9 day on the JMT I'm pretty sure my pack was over 60 lbs! But we had climbing gear, and that stuffs heavy! Light is the way to go, I even weigh my clothes (down to underwear and socks) and pick the lightest of the lot!

Took a rest day yesterday, my lower back/sciatic nerve has been irritated since Saturday (yoga?) so I'm resting/icing but my main issue is that darn desk job! I sit pretty much all day, and it's not helpful!

We cooled down a bit, not quite East Coast cold, but there is a chill in the air....no snow though. emoticon I'm still waiting!

Brenda, LOL, in spite of all my day hikes and "car camping", I'm still very much a novice & still learning "the tricks" for backpacking! Best advice is pack as LIGHT as possible!!! My first week long backpacking trip a few years ago I was a lot like Reese Witherspoon in the movie "WILD" with a HUGE & HEAVY monster backpack weighing in at 50 pounds!!! ACK!!!! Not the way to go!!!!
Every trip since then I've cut back on pack weight with each new trip...My "goal" for this summer is to carry no more than 30 pounds for a week and 1/2 of backpacking... Weigh absolutely EVERYTHING that goes in your pack and think of ways to make it as light as you can! (Example, a "soft" nalgene water bottle instead of a "hard" Nalgene plastic bottle... Only saves a few ounces, but every ounce saved = a lighter pack when everything is loaded!)

Choc - stay toasty! I'm planning on our summer national park trip as well-it helps keep the gloom away. However, the place we chose has a ton of snow this year and the campground told me to email them the beginning of May just to make sure they'll be open by Memorial Day. Ugh-I hope they are!! This is a dream trip I don't want to reschedule. Honestly, I've never gone backpacking. It's on my bucket list. I'd love your tips/advice.

Wood - You're right, 1 day was it. -2 on my drive into work this morning. My dogs are hating it, especially the little one we adopted a few months ago. He's a 7 year old beagle and he's taken to going in the house the past 2 days. I think he's doing it just to avoid having to go out in the cold. Last week he was going in our carport area because he didn't want to go out into the snowy/icy yard. Poor pets. What is NOMADS? Sending warm vibes to the south for you ahead of your trip!

Maui- The wedding plans sound so exciting-it'll be great to have your future DIL's family staying with you. I'm so glad a date is set, super fun.

Rough morning here. Hoping it improves!

Wood... Same weather here, 1 day of "warm" mid 20's and back to the deep freeze... We had -11 windchill, but I still did my morning "hot tub and coffee" routine... Watched the sunrise as a dozen deer worked their way through the snowy woods behind my house
... Definitely a great way to start the day in spite of the cold

Wood, sure hope the weather down south gets warmer before you have to spend time in that canvas sided camper!

All this cold has definitely given me a case if "cabin fever!" So yesterday I started working on plans for next summer's backpacking trip .... At least thinking about my summer hiking and camping helped me forget the cold for a little while!

Gotta go refill my bird feeders... Between the flocks of birds, some squirrels and even a few of the deer, I'm sometimes refilling them twice a day!

Be back later... Have a great day everyone

Well Brenda, the warming trend lasted exactly 1 day! Back to very cold yesterday and this morning in was -8!

I know you people are tired about hearing us Easterners ***ch about the weather, but it's hard to think about anything else! Makes me think of Cassie up there in Manitoba! I don't know how you get used to this over a long period of time. Think I'd better email her and tell her I have a new found respect for her and her neighbors

Saw on the news that our February was colder than that in Anchorage, AL! Now that just doesn't seem right!.

We leave for our first NOMADS project which will be down in Hayesville, NC a week from Friday! From what I've been seeing on Accuweather it's not much warmer there and we'll be staying in a canvas sided camper! Keeping my fingers crossed that it will get warmer before then.

There, my whole post was focused on weather! Definitely turning into a boring old man!

Think warm thoughts!

Happy Monday Deckies!

I got behind again!

Been a crazy several days , trying to keep up...hahaha...how did life get so busy?
Oh, partly...I make work for myself...hehehe..
I had a visit to see my older son, garden work, a swim meet for a young friend, and yesterday my soon to be DIL's Vietnamese family here. Mom and 2 sisters. They wanted to see my garden and talk wedding 'stuff'. They are coming back this summer to stay with me!
Haha...makes it seem real!

Brenda- Garden this week, is more cauliflower (Prob all week again...haha), leeks, onions, arugula, 5 kinds lettuces, spinach, swiss chard, all herbs. These are all available this week. :)

Choc, Brenda, Wood- Wow...reasonable temps on their way! Woohoo...hope it holds!

Ladybug- How'd you do with the baby? Were you able to get the report done?

Kay- Maybe a little snow? This wind down here is crazy...our temps dropped.

Wood- what the photo assignment this week?? That'll be a good focus after this weekend, right? And ya know the weight deal...is always really tough to stabilize out after an illness like you had. Please be gentle with yourself. Hugs.

Life is good.
Get out if you can!
Happy Monday!

Brenda... We got to enjoy two days of "normal" February winter weather (daytime temps in the mid to high 20's) but like you we are back to the Arctic blast... Windchill warnings for -25 to -30 below zero early this morning... But now at least it's sunny and "warmed up" to zero with a balmy windchill of -9 (supposed to be frigid all this week but next Sunday up to 35! A real "heat wave" for us, LOL).... So ready to see Spring, flowers and green grass again!!!!

Ladybug - Good luck with all of your school projects-it sounds like you have a good plan to get them all finished.

Choc-how's that "warmer" weather holding out? We had a warmer weekend but now temps plummeting again today to single and negative digits.

Maui - What's coming out of your garden this week? Thanks for sending me the pictures-I can't wait to plan our spring garden!

Wood- Hugs on the loss of your friends-Funerals can definitely be bittersweet. I really loved our warmer weather day yesterday!

Kay - I hope you get some more snow so you can ski; I know how much you love it.

Desert - Yoga & Meditation sounds like a pretty perfect Sunday morning to me.

Sorry if I missed anyone-trying to catch up.

It warmed up a bit over the weekend, we got about 4 inches of snow on Saturday and then temps almost into 40 on Sunday! After taking the dogs for a walk (it's been ages; they hate this cold) hubs and I started a bonfire in the backyard. It was so perfect!! We won't get that chance again for a while.

I've finally got my basement set up to work out and I used it twice after it was set up last week! I'm pretty proud of myself. Unfortunately I ate a lot of comfort food this weekend. Thankfully I still lost, but I need to lower my fat and calories a smidge. Friday is my first nutrition counseling appointment-I'm nervous but excited.

Kay, I tried snowboarding for the first time this season and had a blast! My legs were so sore the next day. There might be a few days left with the current storm predicted snow, I could check it out tomorrow after classes~have a majority of the afternoon free. Going to wish the apartment complex had a hot tub!

And emoticon those hot springs sound fantastic!

Kept today a lazy day~hung out with the family and played a couple board games. Tomorrow starts a new week, stay positive team!

Hey Choc and Wood, glad you both got to enjoy some real hot tub time!

Wood, hope you get your ski in, you can ski off some of that pizza? Do you make homemade pizza? That would be fun!

KB, you skiing too?

We won't get any skiing in this weekend. Yesterday was beautiful, sunny, warm. In the afternoon the wind picked up, some clouds came in and this morning it's cold! One weather site says snow in Reno tonight, I hope it's right! But more I hope our ski areas get some snow.

Wood, sorry you've had such an emotional weekend, my condolences on the loss of your friend, it's nice that so many people could celebrate her life.

I'm hoping to get out for a walk later, but my back is tweaked again. Not sure what happened, it started hurting last night, and I didn't do anything really yesterday besides puttering around the house and some yoga.

Yep, Choc, I can appreciate the arts and crafts thing being more enjoyable. I have lots of "work" that should be done as well, but somehow with this cold, I've mostly concentrated on my photography courses and getting to the gym.

Got on the scale this morning for the first time in almost a week. Ouch! I'm afraid there was a little too much emotional eating and drinking this week. Excuses!

Wood... "Real" hot tub for me too yesterday and this morning... Couldn't use it most of last week because of the -20 or lower windchills, and then this coming week we're supposed to be back in the "deep freeze" ... (So right now temps in the +20's feels like a heat wave!).... Didn't get your snow, most of that went south of us... Just a few flurries today.

I keep trying to get ambitious and do some major house cleaning while stuck indoors because of this Arctic cold we're having, but I've managed to get involved in some "arts and crafts" projects every day instead (much more enjoyable than cleaning house, LOL)

Have a super Sunday everyone! Choc :-)

Little chilly this morning. no rain forecast but there should be snow in the high country! One last fling with the ski season emoticon Woke up early to watch the sunrise, little meditation and yoga before brewing some tea and fruit salad for breakfast. Family will be waking up and getting ready for church soon. Not sure what adventures have planned for after, could be something or could just make a lazy day out of it. Ended up with maybe 6 inches but at least we didn't get the rain that was forecasted. We're going to clear snow this morning and then hopefully get out for some x-country skiing this afternoon. Finally got into my real hot tub last night! It was snowing like crazy but the temps were in the mid-20's and it seemed that I should quick jump at the opportunity. Besides I like being in the tub when it's snowing!

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Been snowing hard here since about 11 this morning, but it's a real fine snow so we still don't have more than 3 or 4 inches, but the roads are terrible! Been windy as well.

Went to the funeral service for our friend and although very sad it was still a pretty cool thing because there were literally hundreds of people there in honor of her life and in support for her family. People can say all they want about how society is going downhill. What I see is still a world filled with a lot of really great people!

The snow did screw up our evening though. We were having friends over for pizza, wine and games. Oh well, Glor and I will have to have our own pizza, wine and game night! LOL!

Should be back on the deck later tonight. Could use the company.

Stay warm!

So much catching up to do! Will try & get caught up this weekend. I think that I could use a long soak. It's been a VERY long week. My Graduate school interviews are all over now & I'm waiting too anxiously to hear. I just need to relax and let whatever will be be.

I hope that the stars are out tonight above the deck, it seems forever since I've seen the Milky Way!

Wood, YES! You'd be great with little Parker. She's such a smiley baby! Her parents live on opposite coasts (still married, but work separations) and they're on the same coast for 4 weeks, so I volunteered to watch their daughter for a weekend. Good friend? Yes. But also I love kiddos. Did you all know I was a preschool teacher for 2 years? And undergrad in child development. I love the kiddos.

All this talk about hot tubs has me reminded that I went to some hot springs while in Oregon! And you know, getting out of the hot water into the freezing air was not as bad as I imagined it to be. Still, I'm glad we have our towel warmer here on deck. We were short-supplied on towels and the ones we brought were still damp from morning showers so they didn't do much to keep us warm, lol. The experience of the hot spring was pretty awesome, though. And the hike to get there - GORGEOUS! Moss EVERYWHERE. Oregon is such a beautiful state.

Well, happy Friday, everyone! It has not been as productive a morning as I would have liked, so I'm off to do some work. Talk to you all soon!

Morning Deckies!

LOL...Wood- Like I said earlier this week, you look quite nice blushing...hehe...long johns...soooo cute. :)

Choc, Wood, Brenda...everyone in the cold...wow! Sending you warm warm hugs from out west.

Snow- wow! OK. Glad they are coming down for the game. I'd say its good. Love you!

Coyote talk- Wood- Sad to hear about your coyote limping. I really don't understand all that people do, why they think how they do. (Its why I head out to my 'farm'...seems safe so often. But the coyote fear is active here too. I live in suburban area not too far from the hills and we have coyotes running in the early morning hours...right on my street. I have seen them. But I figure they are here due to drought. times will change and they'll head back into the hills when conditions change. And Wood- I love hearing them at night while camping..)

Lady bug- Thank you for stopping by...you know we worry. LOL. Conference sounds super. 6 mo old baby for the weekend??? Wow...OK...lucky parents. Hugs! Next week you may need to schedule a nap or 2. ;)

Hobbes- How are you??? Its Friday! Another week ! And a new weekend here! Plans?

Kay- Great Kingsolver book! (I like every one of her books) Its the weekend again! What adventure awaits? How are Larry's eyes doing?

Brenda- OK weekend is here. Cold cold for you. Ack! I wonder if Kay or anyone has some recommendation for fun (maybe dancing) exercise videos to watch on line, so you can exercise while its still freaking cold??? What's your plan? Poor pups! I bet they are complaining too!

Mary- Hehe...you know, I think about you often when I am cooking. I head out to pick...and you and I are having a chat. :) Last night I picked cauliflower, parsley, lemon thyme, leek, and a few young onions. Thanks for keeping me company! :)

KB- Its super you can ride your bike to Zumba! I keep thinking about Zumba...I hope its in my future some day...it seems fun!

Howdy to all I forgot to mention. HUgs all around. Thanks for the great hot tub time last night! I feel energized and ready to go! (LOL...still coughing a bit)
Happy Friday everyone!

Still blushing! Really getting into the hot tub with my long johns on! Brain must be a little frost bitten! I guess they're still hanging over the deck chair by the waterfall. I imagine they're dry by now! Wow! That was the busiest late night hot tub we've had in a long time! Remember when we used to have those late night chats on many nights? I've been going to bed a little bit earlier than I used to recently. (usually before midnight. It used to be closer to 1 AM) So that's still early for you West coasters. Remember that one talk we had Snow when I was still up at 4 here?

Snow - Glad Choc got you to relax enough to head back to bed. Hope today's visit goes well.

Mary - Finally feeling better! Good! These bugs this year have been tough! We've been cycling some really nasty ones through my family for the past 6 weeks now. Getting old!

Ladybug - I've been worried about you. So thanks for stopping in. An overdue research project and a 6 month old! Wow! Talk about challenges! Good luck! Want me to watch the kid for a while?

Choc - You know I usually like winter, but I AM SO TIRED OF THIS COLD! We've got a couple of inches of snow predicted for tomorrow but then it's supposed to get into the 40's on Sunday and rain! Now the 40's sounds good but I'd rather give the rain to Maui and Snow! And then the cold returns again on Monday!

Kayotic - Thanks for the book suggestion. I'll give it a try. Nice to have you join us for the night time hot tub.

KB - Seems that coyotes are just about everywhere there is enough room for them. I spend a lot of time in Southern Ontario and we often hear them at night. I personally love the sound.

Have a great day everyone!

Life is good!

Snow... Glad you can join me for tub, talk and coffee so early in the morning for you! (It's 6:30-ish here, I'm usually awake at 5am) sorry you're having trouble sleeping (maybe it's the excitement of your son coming to visit?)

This cold is AWFUL, especially since it's been here all week... Schools have been cancelled 4 days this week, including today because of the bitter temps. My two dogs are inside with me almost constantly... I only let them out for 5 min or so when they do need to go out (and they are very eager to come back in!) my two cats have formed a habit of sitting right on top of the floor heat register "grates" ... Must feel like a feline electric blanket to them!

You know it's cold here when we're Looking forward to our weekend "heat wave" in the low 20's!

I am SO READY for Spring weather!!!!

I think Ill take you up on that cup of coffee and lets sit around and chit chat until the others wake up and see the steam forming clouds above us in the hot tub....My son texted that he wanted to know if he could spend the night at our house, arriving this afternoon- he has Sharks tickets to see them play at the 49ers new Stadium.... they are "icing it over" to be the first outdoor hockey game out here, a really big sold out affair. I haven't heard from him in a long time, he has been sort of mad at the world... and now he is surfacing..... and I cannot sleep as my heart is racing like Im running a race. What's up with that?

Im excited, and nervous....... if we are a little quiet tho- maybe the turtles will sleep in a bit. OK--so Ive got my cup ready to go, lets get our towels and get in that nice water!

In Reality-time Choc.... Im aghast that this cold spell is so severe and hanging around so long!! Good thing those doggies can keep you company.....stay snuggled and warm....

Another -27 below zero morning here... We are supposed to "warm up" to the low 20's this weekend though before another cold spell hits again next week so maybe I'll actually be able to use my hot tub Saturday or Sunday! (Only went out there one morning this whole past week)

Sure am glad we have a hot tub and perfect weather here on the deck! I missed last night's tub gathering here, but I've got a fresh pot of coffee brewing for anyone who wants to join me in a morning hot tub soak!

Brandy and great company. Hard to beat this!

I had planned on today being a photo taking day. This week's assignment is black and white. Then I decided it was too cold. Then after lunch, I figured wait, I'm not that much of a sissy! So I put on the long underwear, got out the handwarmers, packed up my photography equipment and headed out to take some pictures. 12 degrees and windy. Got some great pictures. It was a great day!

But now, here it's 20 below with the windchill, so I'm happy to be on the deck with friends, a hot tub and brandy to share. Let's just enjoy being us!

To us!

Life is good!

Happy Thursday Everyone!

Ladybug! emoticon Thanks for popping in!!! We were simult-posting...you have been missed! A 6 month-old! You are a good friend! Good luck with your weekend! emoticon

KB, Kay and KB - I love hearing about all the exercise you gals work into your busy lives! Very motivational!

Choc - I can't believe you're running errands in that cold weather! I'd be hiding under the covers! Hope your car started!

Brenda - Awfully chilly in your neck of the woods too! Stay warm! How's the basement project coming along?

emoticon I am super happy today because food finally tastes delicious again! emoticon Vicious circle when you don't feel well and nothing tastes good...I end up making poor food choices that probably prolong sickness...but today I want nothing but the good stuff! emoticon Giant green smoothies, beets, cabbage, grass-fed beef...I just spent entirely too much time at Whole Foods...I'm making 2 different soups tonight...one is chicken with lentils and kale the other is sweet and sour red cabbage with bacon...I only wish it was farm to table like Maui!...oh well, CSA will start again soon!

I'll definitely be joining Snow emoticon and the turtles tonight! emoticon

Pura Vida!

Mary

This is easily my most missed thread! The conference came and went this past weekend but the lead up to it and then the come-down from it have been....SIGH! I'm still reeling a little just because I'm behind with a big research proposal that I'm supposed to submit to the university for approval tomorrow. I got an extension until Monday, but I'm babysitting a 6-month-old all weekend so I'm not sure how that'll work with getting school work done. GAH!

Things will slow down soon but I REALLY wanted to just take a moment to say HI! And I MISS YOU ALL! I'll talk to you soon!

MrsSand-I had jambalaya and it was pretty tasty, admittedly, not as good as it usually is though :\ Oh well!

Snow-Way to go on all of your exercise-this encourages me.

Kay-Running? I'll leave that to you gals. I did the 5k to say I did a 5k and that's about as much as I enjoyed it :)

Choc-Holy Hannah that's COLD. Our 0 degree wind chills are killing me here. Have you seen pictures of the 16' snow drifts in eastern Canada? Insanity.

Stay safe and warm deckies!

On the subject of Coyotes and wolves.... WE actually have coyote warning signs posted all along our Los Gatos Creek Trail!! There have been many sightings, Im thinking they are coming down from our mountains looking for water and/or the little critters that they eat who also have come closer to cities looking for food and water.... haven't seen one yet and certainly don't plan on it, but I do have a friend who did see one off in the distance.

Off to the gym, Zumba was really fun last night, spinning kicked butt 2 nights in a row as well... but then I wake up and Im raring to go again! Strength training might be put on the back burner today as I want to go to DH Dr appointment with him to hear if PT can finally begin.

I go to work later because its my "late night" for all my working ladies who don't want to spare a Sat. getting their hair done.... Ill nedd that soak in the hot tub after today, anyone else want to meet me there? (Besides the turtles that I seem to attract like magnets!!)

We have lots of coyotes here ... Have seen a few around my home, but mostly hear them yipping & howling on summer nights.

Another bitter bitter cold day... -24 below zero this morning... Looking forward to our "heat wave" this weekend when it's supposed to "warm up" to the low 20's!

Lost most of internet & cell phone signals for past two days... Seems like there was a problem with 4-5 of the cellular towers in the area... Seems like they fixed the problem cause all working again this morning

Off to run some errands (hopefully car will start in this cold)... Be back later... Have a great day everyone!

If you want to read about coyotes, I'd recommend "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver, really good novel that includes coyotes...and other stuff as well. We have our coyotes here too, Larry saw one in the yard once, our neighbor has named him "wolfie". I've only seen one once on my walk home from work, it was a while ago...actually, I saw another one in the park after that, but that's on the other side of the road, not near the house!

Mary, we can run together anytime! Maybe Brenda will join us, and we'll have a deck running club!

Snow, glad you had a nice vacation! Hope you day back at work went well!

KB enjoy zumba!

Hey deckies~hope most of you have thawed out or at least bundled up, looks like more below freezing, single digit temperatures! Glad everybody is still active....fabulous day here and leisurely rode my bike to classes today. I have my Zumba class tonight, wanted to check in with the teams.

Maui -what a lovely gift~congratulations! Mrsand-glad to hear you are feeling better! Snow, vacations are nice.....I get restless when they go on too long, ready to get back work, know that feeling!

Wood-Wow, coyotes have migrated farther north then would think! Probably has a lot to do with humans encroaching on their territory.

emoticon Im right over here, Wood.... never far, sorry it seemed I hadn't posted in a while.... had the week off work and just been enjoying doing stuff from sleeping in to hiking nearly everyday and lots of cooking and yard putzing.

Maui, congrats on getting a date for the wedding, and the sign... OMG- it sounds so perfect and I would have LOVED to have seen your face when you first saw it!!

Im doing just a fast run by here as Im late to get ready for work.... its an all day salon day for me, but Im rested and ready. Taking advantage of spending time with my DH until he gets a new job. I think his shoulder is almost ready to begin some PT as well, Its been since September, and Im hoping its all healed up and ready to learn to be a new shoulder again.

It's simply foggy here for the 2nd day in a row, but we are supposed to get warm again starting tomorrow..... ***SNOW*** emoticon

emoticon Hello deck friends!

I finally defeated the annoying bug that zapped my energy for a week...I was too pooped to party on Valentine's emoticon ...I took naps on Saturday and on Sunday...not normal for me...when I have a little time off I like to get out and get moving!

Yesterday I did 30 minutes of strength exercise and walked an hour...not much but it's a start!

Wood I am so sorry about your friend.

Coyotes are becoming a big problem here. I am friends with a wonderful lady named Patsy...she's one of those "crazy cat ladies" that can be found in every community...she takes care of 40+ feral cats who live behind commercial buildings in our town...including 3 who live behind the business where I work...of course "our" cats are spoiled by us and by Patsy...they hang out inside our warehouse during business hours...anyway, Patsy is out feeding cats at sunrise every day and has seen many coyotes...Midnite, a cat she had cared for for 20 years was attacked and killed last August...a coyote was shot and killed recently with a pellet gun in a backyard a few hundred yards from my work when it hopped the homeowners' fence and went after his Jack Russell...we also hear them howling in my neighborhood so I no longer let my10 pound pooch in the back yard at dusk or dawn...life has it's dangers...

Kay - you and I could be running buddies! For a while I was getting my times down to around 9 but then I decided that it's much more enjoyable to jog at a more leisurely 10+ pace...hope you get snow soon!

Maui - I am jealous that you are gardening in shorts! It's time for me to give my mini garden some attention...and time to try fermenting cabbage again...it was 3 weeks ago that I failed and I still haven't started another batch...Darn that bug that zapped me! Wedding plans - how exciting!

Brenda - Hope you enjoyed your Mardi Gras dinner! I finally motivated myself yesterday by reminding myself how good I would feel after and that if I get enough exercise I can eat a decent amount of food and still lose a little weight...without exercise I'm doomed to move to the left...

Choc - you and your doggies stay warm! I'm going to have to check out your photos! Not a single flake of snow has thought of falling here this year...but at least no ice either...we had 2 ice storms last year that caused multiple day school closings...that was no fun!

Anybody giving anything up for Lent?

Enjoy the rest of the week! Friday's almost here!

Pura Vida!

Mary

Maui-it sounds like such a lovely gift from your son and his fiance-wonderful!!

Wood-It's in downtown York near the Strand Capital theatre. Such a shame about the coyote-are they protected here or not? I'm thinking not. We learned a lot about them in the naturalist course-a movie you may enjoy is "CoyWolf" a documentary about the eastern coyote and it's similarities and inbreeding with the Red Wolf. I'd love to see one.

Kay-I'm glad I'm not the only slow runner! Keep it up.

Calling for more snow tonight..probably this piddly stuff we keep getting. I hear rumors of a significant snowfall this weekend but it looks like it may actually warm up this weekend before heading back into the single digits again so we'll see what actually happens. Today is a very busy day for me so talk to you all soon!

Had a nice soak in our "real" hot tub last night, I sure needed it! I ran in to work yesterday, I took the short route, so a little less than 3 miles, but my best pace yet, under 11 min/mile! Not a super fast runner....but I'm working on increasing my pace bit by bit. But now my ankles are sore, and my hip keeps tweaking on me! Might also have something to do with my Monday workout, lots of squats, jumping and tire flipping. I may need to get that massage table out again!

I'm off work today, dentist appointment first, then I'm going to try the aerial yoga again followed by a facial. I'm calling it my spa day!

Those temps are pretty low there Wood, we'll light up the bonfire, and get it going really good for you (and Choc!).

Maui, congrats on the couple setting the date! Love the sign, I think it's fitting!

Yesterday, Maui and I were talking about my view from my dining room window, my deer, my eagles and my coyote. We don't have many coyotes in this part of the state and I've enjoyed watching him. However this morning, he showed up with a severe limp. I'm sorry to say I believe he's been shot. Not a big surprise, but disappointing to me (and keep in mind, I am a hunter, but I don't hunt just to kill). We'll see if he survives. Coyotes, like wolves, cause a lot of debate. A really good book that deals with wolves in this debate is "The Loop". I don't remember off hand who wrote it.

Hey, I'm missing a few of you who haven't been on the deck lately!! Mary? Hobbes? Ladybug? Snow? Hello!!!!

LOL...haha...Well, I have indeed spent time arising hogs, jumping over pen walls with fighting 260lb pigs to 'board the pigs' to get them to stop fighting.
But you re right, no 'real' farm here. I do have garden clothes and dirty is a common situation for me...lol...today was no exception. Pitchfork, shovel, trowel...lots of dirt...yep...plenty tired again.

Hot tub? You bet!!!!!!!!!!!! My hamstrings know I have been spending a lot of time close to the ground! I hope its not too late.
Hopping in...I may stay all night!

Maui - LOL! Just picturing you in bib overalls slopping the hogs! Nope, not quite selling it! Garden girl? Yes! Dirty girl? Yes! Farm girl? Not in your neighborhood! Sorry.

Okay down to 7 here again tonight! Forget it! I'm sleeping in the upstairs of the treehouse tonight instead! I know it'll be warmer there!

Brenda - I'm not familiar with Tutoni's. York? Harrisburg? Truthfully, there are a lot of what's supposed to be good restaurants here, but we just don't go out that often.

Kay - Some day!

Maui - A date? Fantastic! Should be a lot of fun!

Now, hot tub and wine. Anyone with me tonight?

Morning Deck friends,

Wow...What weather reports! Whew...
Yes, I am spoiled. Had shorts on while working out in the garden yesterday...Ridiculous right?

Wood- sad story...but life and like you say, a great reminder.

Snow- The bbq and sides sounded really yummy. The polenta...oh my...yum!

Kay- I love the list of 'tricks' up have up you sleeve for motivation and time management. This is why you have success. Motivational you! Gosh...a dry week ahead here...must be terrible news for the snow pack.

Brenda- -1 ...-3...seriously? Catfish...I am uncertain if I have ever had it. Must sound like left coaster. ;)

Choc- Wow...you too...I sure hope you get a break and warmer temps. Hows your roof? The snow is not accumulating is it? I am remember last year.

Remember my son and fiancee we coming by on Sunday? Great visit! They came with a belated Christmas present. The had a sign carved for us. Its a beautiful pice of cherry wood. The sign says, (Our last name) Family Farm, Est. 1983. It has redwoods on both ends. Just beautiful! (Wood- It made me think of you!)
Anyhow...beautiful gift. I did send them home after supper with Arugula, greens, cauliflower, bok choi, and leeks, all fresh picked.
This next weekend her mom is coming to visit before she heads to Vietnam to have wedding clothes made for bride and groom and wedding party. Sounds like this event is going to happen. We have a date!
Nice day it was.

Gotta make breakfast...I'll check back later...

Choc - Did you make it into the hot tub last night?

Kay-Thanks for the tips on interval training. last night we taped up the basement tour to get it a bit warmer down there and my hope is, over the next 2 days, to get it fixed up enough to feel comfortable working out down there.

Wood-stay warm! It was a balmy 4 this morning when I left the house-better than the 1 of yesterday. We got about 3 inches here as well but the roads weren't fun. Icey underneath the snow. My thoughts are with your friends' family.

Tonight we go to a local cajun restaurant to celebrate Fat Tuesday. I'm leaning towards jambalaya..or catfish.

Beautiful morning! (If you don't look at the thermometer!) No end in sight either. Here's our predicted lows for the week by Accuweather this morning, starting with tonight: 8, 6, -1, 1, 27 (Saturday), 12, 11, 12, 12, 15!!! We just missed the latest snow storm again. Get this! Yesterday morning's weather forecast on the local radio station predicted 1 - 10 inches of snow! How's that for a safe prediction? We got around 3, I think. (I haven't been out yet.) Even thought the East has been getting hammered this winter, every storm center so far has passed us to the North, the East, or the South (last night). Okay, enough about the weather.

This winter has also unfortunately brought us more bad stuff than we like as well. The latest being this. We got a phone call last night that a good friend of ours (the mother of the groom in that country wedding we were at back in the fall) died suddenly yesterday while working on their rental property. No details yet, but she was only in her early 50's. I feel great sorrow for her husband and children.

Once again, enjoy life every day when you can, because it can sure can come at you with fangs exposed in an instant.

Live! Love! Laugh!

Wood

Wood, you can come visit anytime! We weren't quite 70 today, but still pretty nice out.

Choc, stay warm! glad you made it out of -25, and into single digits, still, brrrr! emoticon

KB, nice active outdoor time with your brother!

Brenda, I like to listen to podcasts when I work out, so that motivates me to put the time in, but you could do books on tape (or MP-3) or music (can really get you moving!) too. If it's the activity that's boring, you could spice it up with intervals (and get it over with faster too), like 30 seconds all out, followed by a minute cooling down, for 4-5 intervals. Once you build up you can do longer intervals and more of them.

Snow... OMG you made me laugh like crazy with your comment on my page about how cold it is where I live! Trust me, even though I'm used to Michigan cold winters, these past few "windchill warning" days have definitely kept me & my two dogs inside! (Preferably in front of whatever window has the most sun shining through it!)

Brenda.... Chocolate Popsicle ... LOL, that's pretty darn funny too!

We have actually "warmed up" to 9 degrees! A real "heat wave!"... Maybe I can take a dip in my hot tub after all! (Before the temps drop below zero again!)

At least it's a real sunny day today... Makes it "look" warmer even if it's still cold!

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

Choc-you make me not want to complain about our single digits here either-please stay safe! We don't need any chocolate popsicles.

Wood - Hubs and I went to Tutoni's near your neck of the woods for Valentine's Day - super tasty! They serve local ingredients and have amazing (splurge) pasta.

DesertBloom - A bike ride sounds SOOO nice right about now. Enjoy!

Maui-I hope you're feeling better soon-how was your weekend?

Snow - Wishing you lots of light this week!

Kay - You want more snow? We have had lots of consistent little snows but nothing huge this year. If this is going to continue, I'd rather we just get one big DUMP of snow and then onto spring. Or just fast forward to spring. But for your sake, I hope you get some more so you can enjoy your outdoor winter sports that you enjoy so much.

I splurged on treats this weekend so back on track today! Trying to figure out how to get a 3rd exercise hour into the week is tough especially when it's so cold out. Last week I skipped my hike because of the wind chills. This week i want to get back on track, even if it means just getting on the elliptical (boring) in the chilly basement. I think if I "dress up" the basement workout area I'd feel more inspired to go down there on the miserable weather days. Tips?

Temperature this morning is -26 below zero! (And that's ACTUAL temp, not windchill !!!)
Another mostly indoor day for me and the pooches! ... Guess I'll clean house and work on some arts & crafts today!

You know I'm not usually a grumpy sort of guy, but hearing about all of you who are having temps in the 70's just might push me over the edge! -3 here and it's still windy!!! Being outside for more than a few minutes can be painful!! Okay, I'm done crying so I'll just join whoever is on the deck where the weather is however we want it, get into that hot tub where the water temperature is perfect and share the bottle of Pinot Noir I just opened with whoever wants to share it with me! Okay, now I'm smiling!

Hey deckies! LOL yeah, sorry about that guess I kinda disappeared.....forgot to weigh-in, too! I've been trying to make up for skipping morning run last week, little brother and I went on little bike ride around the neighborhood before lunch~a little over a mile; went to the park later to walk around for a few more miles. The weather has been really nice too, know Winter weather in other parts of the country aren't so lucky.

I think my legs handled the ski pretty well, so far so good, anyway! I did take a nice long hike today, a little over 2 hours, checked out a new (for me) trail on my usual route, there are so many trails out there to explore!

I have my indoor herb garden, 2 new basil plants from Trader Joe's! I also stocked up on chocolate, the first I've bought since December! That feel pretty good!

I don't think we were in the 70's today like we were the past couple of days, but it was still pretty warm out, especially considering it's February...I do hope the weather changes for us here, and we get more snow. The past couple of years we have had some in March and April, if I recall correctly!
