Snow - That is so COOL!!!!! .....and it's also almost exactly what Luv and I did. You probably remember when we moved from what we called the "suburban house" to the what we call "the cabin". Well we had lived in the suburban house for about 33 years or so as well. Bought this place which is about 2 hours away from where we lived. It's on the side of a small mountain facing another mountain. We've got a lot of privacy here! Also like you, we moved from an area that had a much higher cost of living, so we too made out well there. I hope you and your husband are as happy with your move as we are with ours! Let me know when you're ready to celebrate!

We're in a severe weather alert right now. Big thunderstorms all over the place. Presently we have a tornado watch but about 10 miles north of us, they're under a tornado warning now. Could be an interesting evening.

I'll try and stop by a little later for some hot tub and adult beverage!

Life is good!

Snow... CONGRATS on the new home!!!!

I know how you feel about leaving your home of 33 years though...I've been in my home for 26 years, and before that lived right next door with my parents (they owned the original 10 acres, I bought 5 of those acres from them and had my "dream home" built back here in the woods.... Will definately miss living here when or if I ever moved (but think of it as a new adventure! And new trails to hike on!)

Gotta run... Expecting some visitors soon... Will stop back in later... Choc :-)

emoticon Good morning Deckies! Its a foggy morning here, but my humming bird feeders are really busy despite the lack of sunshine! I put the butterfly emoticon bird house in the direct sight of, about 4 feet directly in front of my kitchen window and it has attracted a lot of interest! I don't think there is a nest inside it yet, but the one on the other side of the tree in inhabited by a finch. I can hardly keep the feeders full- even with all my yard of flowers! I have two "parrot beaks" and those are a "Starbucks fly thu" for a special treat while they are in full bloom. I have a few nests with eggs on my back porch, hanging securely - but very precarious looking from various wind chimes and hanging decorations. Ah....loving spring here too!

So where the heck have I been lately? Well, I have been around, peeking in on you all here and there, but distracted by planting, working 4 days a week in my salon, trying to grab a work out at the gym, but not nearly as often as I'd like to...... and managing a weekely 2 or 3 day visit up north, checking in on our son and wife, enjoying our visits, checking out the area and falling in love with the foothills that would have us be so much closer to Lake Tahoe! Ah... the brain was ticking, the hearts were always pounding... the thought of leaving a home of 33 years is so hard to wrap our hearts around! But the adventure, the fun, the beauty up there, the clean air, the homes being 2-3 times the size and half the price... oh the carrot in front of the race horse for sure emoticon

We bought a wonderful home with a million dollar view! And have sold our home in 5 days on the market! What a crazy time that was!! The market here in the bay area is STUPID CRAZY right now, and I didn't want to miss that train! We can pay cash for our new home, and will have no bills and DH has a new job that timed out well with his being on disability during his shoulder recovery. (PT finally- working with 1 pound kind of got fast forwarded with this moving and packing thing however emoticon But Im watching him close! )

So, that said... I will not be around too much, but Ill be peeking occasionally just to keep that connection with you all in my heart emoticon Im trying to decide if I should rent the moving company with their expertise and one trip up there, or do the pod thing which requires a lot more on our end physically... we have boxed a lot of things already and will probably continue to do so anyway.... one last worry. How to get 33 years of things weeded out and organized for a new home...its coming along! Its called "get a dumpster! " LOL!!

Heading up to our sons for an overnight, going to be there for the home and pool inspections tomorrow.....then its all a done deal! I love who bought our house by the way! a Dr and wife living in the area who want to downsize... she said she fell in love with the house and especially the yard, that she could feel the love the moment she walked in the house. The nice thing is that our home passed all inspections with flying colors, not even a termite, they could not believe how we have kept everything perfect. They can move in and have a backyard party that same weekend if they wanted to!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wish us well! I love all the wildlife, nature and bird stories going on here, and Choc!!! You made me laugh big time.... "tastes like chicken" remark! Really?? Just sayin"!!

Wood... Fried finch... Tastes like chicken

Every once in awhile a hawk will. "Dive bomb" my bird feeders... Most of the song birds manage to get away but Mr Hawk has caught a few... One time the hawk "miscalculated" his dive though and flew right up against my house! Knocked himself "dizzy" & just laid there staring up at the sky ... I called our local DNR & they sent out a guy that rescues injured birds of prey... He took the hawk, and a couple days later came back & let me watch as he turned it loose right in its original territory... Was cool to watch (don't think my songbirds were very happy to see the hawk back again)

Kay... I bought 4 hanging plants, and will need to bring them indoors every night this week because night temps are supposed to get down to low 30s and high 29's :-/ I always seem to "rush the season" every year when we get a few warm days ... Spring Fever LOL.... You might need to cover your tomato!

Hiked 5 miles yesterday and 3 miles this morning (although this morning was more of a "stroll" on back roads than a hike)

Gotta do some house chores... Be back later

Lots of rain here as well. Yes, it is a shame we can't just even things out a little and send it over to the west coast. Starting to clear now, but heavy thunder storms predicted for this evening. I'm hoping to get some photography time in during those hours. My assignment this week is "the golden hour" which is basically early morning and late evening. We'll see how it goes.

Here's my bird encounter at the moment. Seems I have a pair of Cooper's Hawks that have decided to build their nest out behind my house. Now, all in all, that's pretty cool. I enjoy they're squawking at me. I like to think they're greeting me since I am their landlord! LOL! However, as you know, I have a lot of bird feeders around and as a result I have lots of songbirds; again something I enjoy immensely. The hawks see this as the local fast food restaurant! Now in some ways that's pretty cool - all part of the circle of life. However, it also seems a little unfair to lure in my songbirds to become someone else's supper. Anybody interested in finch for lunch?

Still, Life is good!

Crazy bird encounter number 2: right after I posted yesterday's post, I heard quite a commotion in the living room, seems a little finch had flown into the room and was trying to get out the window! She kept flying into the window to get out, but to no avail, and as these are not windows I can open, I got a broom and tried to guide her to the wide open sliding door to the deck. She finally figured it out and made a beeline for the fence!

I took a chance and planted one of my new tomato plants outside...now I'm hoping we don't get too cold at night, but it's been so nice out, so I'm hoping it will continue with that. Also put a rosemary I've had in a pot since before Thanksgiving out there, but I'm less worried about that one.

My coyote recount was not to frighten anyone, just my experiences. I am 5'2" and have been told by several hunters, different times, differnet countries that I look like a white tail deer going through the woods..LOL I try to wear bright colors now when I am alone. I supose if I look like a deer to hunters, I might look like one to coyotes too.

I have hand fed coyotes, beggars on popular trails. If I didn't finish my lunch, I threw it out along the trail knowing some critter would be thrilled to have an easy meal. Obviously this happenes a lot. Wildlife associates easy meals with people. I no longer do this and know it is detrimental to the human and the animal.

I will propbaly continue to hike and canoe until my bones stop cooperating.

My most recent wildlife encounter/viewing was much more benign, but I was amused...yesterday I was sitting on the back deck reading, when I heard the quail chattering in the bushes...I glanced over and saw something slithering out from the bigger bush toward the next one, and put on my glasses to see that it was, indeed, a snake coming out from the bush, well, those quail came along right after it, and started pecking away mid snake! So it slithered a bit more, then made a run for the fence and down into the canyon...with the quail in hot pursuit! I don't think I've seen that before!

I do think it's good to be aware of our surroundings when we are out in nature or in human environments, and then to enjoy where we are, if possible, in a relaxed, but alert state of mind.

Hey deckies......mmmm, coffee and banana bread make a perfect after morning run snack :) One of the things love about being in nature is the chance encounter with some amazing wild life. There are some animals have to look out for, scorpions, rattlesnakes, etc out here in the desert....but live by the rule, do no harm, admire and walk away....for the most part they aren't out to get you. I've seen bears, boars, and snakes and have lived to tell the tale lol

Wood... I totally agree with you! When I have seen coyotes it's always been just a quick sighting... And along with all the many other sightings of wildlife (deer, turkeys, snakes, eagles, "whatever") it always makes that hike more special .... And as a woman hiking, kayaking, camping alone most of the time I am aware about potential "unfriendly or dangerous" human (or wildlife) encounters.... I don't let that cause fear or keep me from doing my outdoor activities, but I am aware of the potential, I try to take some precautions, and sometimes play the "what would I do if" scenario in my mind... Then I continue doing & enjoying the outdoor activities I love

Speaking of which, it's a beautiful morning so I'm heading out for a quick hike right now ...
Left a big pot of fresh coffee and some home made banana bread on the deck for anyone else who shows up this morning ... Be back later

I'm finding all this coyote talk pretty fascinating! As all of you know, I spend a lot of time outdoors! Always have! This doesn't make me an expert on wildlife but it does provide me with a lot of personal experiences. I've come in contact to a lot of coyotes over the years. Usually just fleeting "I'll go my way, you go your way" situations. I have had a couple of these wild canines act almost domestic and friendly, never coming right up to me, but a couple who stayed close by as if they liked my company. But then again, maybe they were just assessing my fat content, before making me their next meal! Maybe something will happen to change my mind, but right now I think human encounters in the wild have a lot more potential to being dangerous than contact with coyotes. As Snow would say, "Just sayin'!"

I do want to say, to my knowledge, there are only two reported deaths to humans by Coyote, One is a child out west, the other the 19 year old in Cape Breton.

HOB and CHOCOLATE I have read every book available on Eastern coyote. Yhey are amazing and hide so very well. One of their names is brush wolf. I have some pictures of them lurking in the bush. Watching Zander my dog, Coyote sized but with the setter fringed tail, stalk through brush, I realized how vulnerable I have been. One noise by them and there clan is there. They travel alone but mostly have pack which consist of the breeding pair, kids, aunts, uncles. One snort, yip, bark or scent spray and the pack is there. They are incredibly asaptive.

The animal has to be close for bear spray and you need to see them head on. You might consider wasp spray. It shoots a long distance. It is real good for stunning snakes too. Also works for humans you need to back off. Hahahahaha
As the hands on a clock, the first coyote will attack at 4-5 or 7-8, just out of your periferal vision, the next come in from the side. You won't see them first unless you interrupt them doing something else. They aren;t likely to come if you are using that stick walking to change your shape, or with someone. But they have circled hunters with guns. Here in the Carolinas they taunt people bar b quing in their yards and small pets. I see them dead along the highways and they resemble skinny German shepards, with a lot of dark long hairs. The ones I see in CapeBreton are tan and grey.

I was sitting in my yard in CB surrounded by woods, all the lights off, glass of wine, hubby inside sleeping, me in my lounge chair drinking wine and star gazing. I heard a dog come up from the river, yawn, sit and scratch. I could smell the mixture of water, mud and dog hair that I was so familiar with. Although I am a dog lover, I thought to myself, of gosh, someones dog, probably a Lab is wondering around and will come over and want me to pet him. He stinks and I don't want that slime and water on me. I am sure I was in my PJ's. So I sat quietly hoping he wouldn't come over to my chair. But I knew he would. Dogs are just social critters. But a minute or so passed and he just sat scratching and stretching.
I then thought, how unusual. Then it hit me like going in the bathroom to pee and someone is already on the toilet! There are no loose dogs on the river. There are no loose dogs in the village. I have no neighbors with in blocks. What I have is a coyote venturing by and checking things out. I quietly aroe from my lounger, headed straight for the door, and went to bed.
I never told my husband. But the next few days I hauled a lot of river rock up and dug a 6 foot fire pit. Every evening I have a fire.

MissJaq... I almost always hike & kayak alone (it's either that or I don't get to go) ... We do have coyotes here but they usually don't run in packs and even though we hear them at night we almost never see them...But I do always have a trek pole with me, and for awhile last summer I also carried bear spray after a jogger was attacked & killed just two miles down the road by two huge Cane Corso dogs (those look like Bull Mastiffs), the dogs had a "local" reputation for biting, and after that attack they were euthanized....This summer I haven't carried the bear spray, but I do always have my trekking pole with me (Now I only carry the bear spray when I'm backpacking in bear territory)

It has rained solid here for over a week and I have made a little pathway through my house to click off laps. I did get a few dog walks in rain. Living on the beach we have lots of houses on stilts so I can duck under those if need be.

We have a couple of ducks that come every spring to nest in a ditch across the street. They waddle over twice a day and we feed them. It has rained so much they don't even come out.
emoticon
The talk of coyotes is interesting. We had a horrible problem with them in Cape Breton and the Cabot trail. I had 3 bands bu the cabin and listened each sun down as they howled the young ones in for the family night hunt. They had started approaching hikers and bikers. Finally they killed a 19 year old girl on a popular trail near my cabin.

I hike alone often on these trails and never had much fear. I always walk with a big stick and I have a whistle and knife. I also have a knife duct taped to my stick. After the girl was killed, I now have the whistle and smaller knife on my wrist, not my lanyard around my neck. I repeat tomyself all the time to curl to a ball if I get knocked down. Not sure if reflexively I could do this, but i repeat it to myself.

This girl was killed like all animals of this type get prey. She was attacked by 3 coyotes. She was knocked down from the side by one, the other ripped her leg at the groin to keep her from running, while the third took her neck. No different than any other animal they attack.

Rescue came quickly because of other people on the trail getting to her screams quickly and phone service. They killed the 3 coyotes. They flew in the expert and autopsied the animals. They were not starved, they were not sick, it was just a prey attack.

The expert is from Cincinnati Ohio. Imagine that. A band of 200 coyotes in downtown Cincinnati. Coyotes just need a small amount of tree line, some squirrels, mice, rabbits and vegetaion. They breed often and early in life. They are more adaptive than cockroaches.

DNA shows the Eastern coyote has bred with wolves, thus the packing character occurs in the East. They will circle hunters, hikers, and are efficient at getting their prey.

I see people on the trails all the time with merely a camera and set of keys, exactly what this girl carried with her. I decided I needed a big dog as a hiking companion. I had to borrow dogs for 2 years until I found the right size and type for me. I still carry a walking stick with my knife attached, a whistle and a wrist knife. Hope I never need them, but it makes me feel better.

Walking with a big stick should be on everyones list of must have when you are in the wilderness or Cincinnati.

Yep, love the creek, not sure if that was my discovery or someone else's but it was a great addition to our deck world! Especially the rope swing Maui hung on that big ol' tree so we could take turns splashing into the swimming hole...

Haven't hear our coyotes here for a few nights, but I'm sure we'll hear them again soon. It's been so windy, I'm guessing they were hunkered down in their dens, but we're warming up for the weekend again, so probably everything will be running around soon!

Took a rest day today, just did some yoga and meditation, but no real "activity" other than that. My fitbit won't be very happy, but that rest sure feels good sometimes!

Congrats Hobbes on your good news! Sounds like you have some great options!

Choc, nice to have a hiking buddy!

Okay, really? I stopped by around 9:30 (East Coast time) and there hadn't been anybody on the deck all day since I had been there in the morning. So I didn't stick around. Then all of you show up! I would have loved joining all of you down at the creek!

I do love the fact that the night sounds have started picking up over the last few nights. It's finally warm enough that some of the tree frogs and crickets have begun rehearsing for their music fest that lasts all summer long!

In fact, one of the things I like about traveling all over the place is experiencing the night time concerts. When we down in North Carolina last month, the coyotes put on quite a show several of the nights while we were entertaining ourselves around the campfire. When I go on my numerous trips to Southern Ontario each summer, the bullfrogs and the loons sing all night long! ...and how about the sound of the ocean along any of our sea coasts? However, one of my favorite night sounds is the laughter of friends around a popping pine wood fire!

KB - You remind me of the really young contestants on shows like the Voice or Idol where I've got to wonder how is possible to be so talented at so young an age. As for you, I wonder how someone so young has gotten to be so socially adept as well as so aware of the natural world and it's effect on us. I'm fascinated by your level of mindfulness! So tell us, what happens after graduation?

You know Kay, we've spent a lot of nights down at that creek over the last 6 - 7 years now. I'm trying to remember, but I think it may have been you who first discovered it!

Hobbes - One of the other "Deckies" once replied to me when I referred to my virtual friends here that we go way beyond just being virtual. Here we become a "virtual reality". I like that thought. I feel that I have made some "real" friends here on the deck. You, BTW, are a great addition to the team. I enjoy the way you see the world. Good luck in getting that position! That would be wonderful!

Choc - As usual, our weather is a day behind yours. Wet day today (although more damp than washout) and beautiful tomorrow. Hope your new hiking buddy works out! Hiking solo is great for communing with the Maker and his creations, but hiking with a friend is good for the soul!

Jaq- Teenage garden frog courtships! Now there's an image that makes me smile! I guess that really old cliche, "Love Makes the World Go Round" is really appropriate in the spring time! My property seems to a "Honeymoon Resort" for a lot of critters and there's room for them all! (except maybe my moles and groundhogs!)

I hope all of you have a great weekend! However stop by here at "The Deck" when you have a moment. I get lonely when there's no one around!

WHeeeeeeeee..Lots of company on the deck! Sorry the stories are slim for me tonight. i will just have to listen to all of yours. It has rained so much here even my dog is bored. Well he has stood vigilance trying to catch this big bull frog that scoots from the fish pond to the pool. I don't know why dogs chase frogs. They hate the taste and it makes them foam at the mouth. I would not bother smacking on something like that, but he can't seem to stop himself. My teenage garden frog have not got started yet with their courtships, but they will soon.

Hiked 3 miles with a friend of mine... She lives nearby & wants to "get more active" so we're going to try to hike together 4-5 mornings each week (great incentive to get myself back on the trails too, LOL) she's new to hiking so we'll work on adding "milage" as we go along... (Enjoying having company since I usually hike alone)

Did more walking on my own later in the day (just doing chores and errands) so by the end of the day the pedometer read a tad over 5 miles... Not bad for a chilly & rainy day

Friday is supposed to be great weather, so I'm hoping to spend most of the day outdoors

Kay... I'll join you at the creek if you don't mind,... I love hearing the frogs singing away, and maybe we'll hear the coyotes yipping up in the hills!

Snow, Wood, Maui, Desertbloom (and anyone else on the deck tonight) ... Let's all gather by the creek, listen to the night sounds and watch for shooting stars

What a welcoming image..

So this is what I imagine when I think of our deck.

I wanted to share with my deck friends that I got really some perhaps great news yesterday about graduate school studies and another program that I've been invited to apply to that would guarantee me a job while I go to school and pay for 90% of my tuition. It's very competitive and so I'm trying not to be too overtly excited but I'm going to give it all that I have anyhow (could use some positive vibes sent my way)

You can find me tonight in the natural spring and I think that I will be here for awhile taking a much needed soak. Whoever invited the crickets I'm grateful (love to listen to them sing).
Tomorrow's the big weigh in (I have a feeling that I've crossed the line this week on the wrong side *we'll see). Love to read all of your daily chatters, out-of-door adventures and life stories. What a wonderful virtual team to hang out with. The stars will be out tonight. Hobbes

Well I heard a great rustling in the bushes on my way home from work today, but no boar here, it was just a dog having a fun time bushwhacking! Other than that it was a pretty quiet day, back in the office, got a lot of work done, still have a bit to catch up from the 2 day training....those meetings do slow down the day to day work, but getting together like that does make some of the sticking points actually get moving again!

KB, nice new profile pic!

Snow, glad you could stop by! Excited to hear about your project too!

I might go sit by the creek and soak my tootsies in the water....it seems like one of those nights where it might be nice to sit out there listening to the frogs and staring at the stars!

Hey yeah, Wood~call it the human experience.....everybody has them and sharing helps us learn and grow from one another. Bummed haven't been on Spark very often this last semester. Even if don't get to comment, try to keep up daily with what's going on with the message boards!

I have been less active past week too, sent the weekend outdoors at Country Thunder! Need to survive a few more weeks of school and then the big payoff.....graduation!

Snow - I definitely miss you too!!!!! So thanks for at least stopping in for that quick hug! Can't wait to hear about your huge secret! I love secrets!

Kay - You obviously know me very well. I do indeed love stories! ...and everybody's life if full of them. I know yours is full of fascinating adventures as is true of everyone on this team. Even our youngest OP (I think that would be KB) sees the world around her as something well worth sharing with others.

Let's see what kind of stories we can tell tonight - new ones- things that just happened today!

My early morning was spent in Pilates class, but I'm glad I went! I do like getting my "fitness" done early, so I can get on with the rest of my day.

Jaq, exciting story about the boar, I've never seen one either (aside from TV), must have been quite the day! Glad your dog made it out OK too!

And fishing vs catching, I had to go back and read Wood's post again to see what that meant, pretty funny!

Yep, Wood, definitely a fan of the stories on deck!

Choc, sounds like your yard is going to be quite the pretty sight with those flowers and all...I might have to do something with ours, but I tend to just let them go wild, and just clean up the dead stuff now and again. Lots of oregano and coreopsis that like to start up any and everywhere in our yard.

Wood... I was hot tubbing at dawn today also! Definitely my favorite time of day, watching the sky colors as sunrise nears, listening to the songbirds, geese & ducks, and of course sipping on a big cup of coffee
as I soak in the bubbling warm water of the hot tub! Great way to start the day for sure!

Went for a short walk with my neighbor, now I need to get busy with yard work, have three more flower beds to clean up & mulch

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone! Let's all hot tub on the deck tonight! :-)

Good morning OP!

Just got in from my hot tub at dawn experience! I think that may be my favorite time of day - the time the world is transitioning from quiet sleep to a wakeful of feeling good just being alive! I think the birds have the right idea - waking and although not up and flying around yet, sing greetings to all those around them. In a way, that's what I'm doing when I get up this early - I'm not yet moving a lot, but I move to the deck where I can wish a joyful day to all my outdoor people friends! Open yourselves to the sights and sounds of whatever today brings! Life is good!

Jaq - Sometimes fishing. Sometimes catching. Pretty much describes life, doesn't it.

Live! Love! Laugh!

Good morning Deckies!

JAQ - Your wild boar story was a great way to start my day! I've yet to ever encounter a wild boar, but I'd like to.

Last weeks photography lesson turned out "okay". I don't think I got any great shots, but I met a lot of very interesting people! We have grown up with a "beware of strangers" type of philosophy and that's really too bad. Most people are really very interesting and everyone has a story that they're willing to tell. Isn't that one of the reasons the deck attracted you? - The stories being told?

Luv and I got out on the tandem for the first time this year! Great day for a ride - 75 degrees and gorgeous!

Presently in the "repair my equipment" mode. Working on my log splitter, my rototiller, a lawn mower and a chain saw. Should keep me busy for a while.

I have a couple pairs of Eastern bluebirds hanging around right now, so last night I quickly made another bluebird house. Will probably make another one today. I'm trying to encourage them to stick around.

Kay - Would have love to be with you on that trail. Went small mouth bass fishing down in my stream for the first time this year yesterday. Didn't catch a thing! Water was high and cold! However, here too the wild flowers are just starting to show up! Most exciting thing for me was running into about 10 migrating loons who decided to stop over for a rest! I love loons!

Hobbes - Some of my fondest memories is being outdoors with my kids! Actually still making memories and now many of them are with my grandkids! Life is good!

Mary - Keep that energy flowing! Your busy, sounds exciting as well. Enjoy!

Choc - Yep spring took it's time getting here, but it feels pretty darn good now that it arrived!

Life is good!

MissJaq.... WOW ! That encounter could have been dangerous! Mama animals like those wild pigs can be very protective of their little babes! Glad that unexpectedly exciting adventure ended safely for all :-)

Off to my first appointment with a new Thyroid doctor... Hopefully this will result in new meds to help control my battle with weight gain (never had a weight problem before thyroid went "whacky" a few years ago, and my old thyroid doctor just shrugged & didn't seem concerned at all with my constant complaints about weight gain)

Be back later... Choc

KAYOTIC,

Glad to hear that you got in a hike today.. The lupine, phlox and giant yellow daisy-like blooms sound like Spring. The hike sounded a bit serendipitous (sometimes that can be really quite fun that is if one doesn't get REALLY lost).

As for me... I just can't seem to get out the door today. Good to hear you made it. I'm listening to my gutters glug, glug and the pattering of rain & more rain. I'm afraid I may not make it but there's some light left outside.

Now if I could only talk my shoes into going.

Back from a long hike this morning/afternoon! I was trying to hit a newish trail I had followed a few weeks back, but in the other direction, but must have missed it, I ended up farther west than I had planned....but lots of blooms to be seen, so I'm not complaining! Lupine are starting to bloom, lots of phlox and some giant yellow daisy-like blooms as well. And the temps are just about perfect....

Spent my afternoon into the evening exploring a trail beside a River and then a small town that was close by. My 16 year old son and I walked, talked, ate together and had bonding time. Had meant to bring my camera but left it on the door knob as we locked up the house (darn). We saw a lot of different water foul & heard woodpeckers. We watched a nutria follow the bank of the River as a hawk circled overhead.

Wood- your photography assignment sounds like fun. Look important & snap away!

Hi Deckies... Wow it sure doesn't take long to get way behind in the posts! Read them, but can't reply to all so I'm just going to "start fresh" here, LOL

We are FINALLY getting some real Spring weather after such a cold start! I definitely have Spring fever today (sunny, temps in the 60's & more of the same predicted for the up coming week) I spent today hauling 3 huge bags of organic garden soil & 3 bags of organic compost from the garden store to my "garden tubs" up on my deck (out of reach from all the deer we have around here)... Planted peas, spinach, and 3 kinds of lettuce( All organic).... Also spread 9 huge five gallon buckets of dirt on a bare part of my lawn, raked it & seeded it with grass seed & then fenced in that whole area with chicken wire to keep my dogs off the newly seeded "lawn"....

Needless to say, I definitely got my exercise in today and am ready for a nice long soak in the hot tub! Who wants to join me?

Choc emoticon

Back from Pilates this morning, one of the participants requested trigger point therapy balls, oh, my! I don't think my feet have ever felt so bad and good at the same time, It's good to get all those joints stretched out and moving right! I walked over to the gym and back, it's a bit overcast, but still (compared to last night when the wind was a howling!) and lots of red-wing blackbirds singing away in the cat-tails near the pond. Love that song!

Jaq, nice pedi!

Wood, like Maui said, snap away! I'm guessing if anyone can get some great pics of people in the street, it would be you! emoticon

Put up my latest batch of kombucha....I'll have to brew some tea here soon, to start them up again, but first we're headed out to Lowe's and T.J's when Larry is ready.

Looks like a perfect spring morning - lots of sunshine, a light breeze and my coffee is almost finished brewing! Life is good!

JAQ - Really wine and peppermint patties for less than 50 calories?? You must have consumed them on the deck! Nice pedicure! Although I barely got the glimpse before you turned the light out!

Kay - Those few extra pounds - I didn't even notice.

My photography assignment this week is "street photography". We're supposed to hang out in a town or city and just snap loads of people pics. Sounds a little dangerous to me. How about if I just snap pics of you guys around the deck?

Enjoy your weekend!

Scooch over I need a nice soak. Lots of walking today. First some pesty shopping then long walk with the dog. I will have a soft Pinot Noir and 3 of those tiny mini York peppermint patties. Only 50 calories and I already logged them. Calories good for the day so turn up the bubbles and turn out the light. oh yeah, turn up the music.
And look at my toes..I did get a Pedi today too.

I was planning to try to get to work early today, it didn't happen, but I finished my work early, so hit the gym after, got in some kettlebell work, and signed up for Pilates tomorrow morning. Hopefully if I keep moving, some of these extra pounds I've gathered over these past few weeks will drop back off again! emoticon

I hadn't heard any reports about Kirkwood, but I guess I'm not that surprised if they got that much, was that from last weekend? Sounds like a lot, we didn't really see that much on Donner summit. Royal Gorge has been closed since early March...so my thoughts of skiing have been put away for now!

All this hot tub talk has me hankering for a dip, I think I'll head out here soon!

Morning my Deck Friends,

Hobbes and Wood, falling asleep by the cracklin fire...Oh my...very little is better than a fire.
Brenda, remember our nightly fires?
Wood- I remember very well the dancing flames of your wood stove, mid winter, after a hot tub dip. Nice.

Nice to hear spring is coming to show itself for most of you. We here have trees in full spring green (for now), roses blooming like crazy, and yes...threats of drought continuing and rationing on its way.

Choc and Wood- Morning coffee in the hot tub again ...love it! Hope thats helping your sore muscles there Wood.

Kay- I heard Kirkwood got 28" of snow...is that right?

KB- Glad you ride safely...were you around when Wood fell on his bike? Ack! Scary. Do they have good bike paths in your area?

Jaq- Shooting stars, another favorite like a campfire. Up in the high sierra mountains a few time last fall, (closer to the stars), got up super early...about 2:30 Am to watch a meteor show.

I am Not starting my weekend early Wood, but that does sound fun!
Have some financial reports to file, mowing and composting already again, tons of chores...So I better boogy.

Have a great Friday Outdoor peeps...get out!

Foggy, misty morning as the sun struggles to make itself known, hidden by yet another day of cloud cover. Pretty much been the pattern all week, although it promises to be a gorgeous weekend. The daffodils are finally blooming and my goldfinch that flurry around my feeders have suddenly exchanged their bland winter coats for feathers of black and gold! Maybe spring is slowly defeating this unmerciful cold winter! I certainly hope so! I need to feel the warm sunshine on my skin and feel the vitality of my stream flow around me as I wade my creek seeking the elation I feel as I release the many fish that briefly spar with me. Bring on the green. Bring on the flowering trees. Bring on the symphony of the early morning song birds! I'm ready for that transition to summer!

Choc - Feels good to be getting that sunrise hot tub in again! Didn't happen so often this winter!

Hobbes - The crackle of last nights fire put me right to sleep. I wasn't even aware of your presence! It's been an active and tiring week!

Kay - Feels good shedding the fleece doesn't it! Love the fact that you continue to run to work. You're still one of my best inspirations!

KB - I'm hoping to get my bike out for the first time this weekend since November when I had my big crash! It's been a long time and I miss it!

JAQ - One of the biggest joys of the late night hot tub is gazing at the star filled heavens. A "falling star" still provides the same thrill that "falling stars" brought to me when I young and impressionable. Hmmmm! I guess I'm no longer young, but I'm definitely still impressionable.

To our West Coast girls - I'm trying desperately to send some of rain back your way, but the clouds just refuse to travel in a westerly direction!

Well, starting our weekend a little early here today and having friends over for lunch, cards and a glass of wine or two. Life is good!

Hear ya, deckies! I, too, am ready for the weekend! I don't have any classes on Fridays and plan on taking a nice long bike ride tomorrow, maybe do some swimming, and take a well deserved break.

Almost Friday...makes me happy! emoticon Even though I had a nice break mid-week, it's nice to have the weekend to look forward to as well!

Ran in this morning, and it was a bit on the chilly side, and walked home this afternoon and quickly shed my fleece jacket! The sun was shining, birds singing, folks out running and walking their dogs....really quite enjoyable.

MISSJAQ,

I hope somehow one of those stars managed to reach you! It was such a lovely night for a soak. I'm glad we all have this place to come together to decompress. Someone lit a small fire and I'm enjoying it hearing it crackle. I'll sleep tonight while listening from one of the hammocks.

Sweet Dreams

Scooch Over I am hopping in the tub. I am achy too but not bad. I think I need a sofa and TV day soon. I know those are winter days or rainy days, but my body could use a wee break.
OH well, i will just soak and look at the stars..Maybe one will fall and I can put it in my pocket.

A break does sound so wonderful.. I'll be hanging around for that. I just came in from a couple mile walk after work this evening & walked through this large very open athletic field the view was expansive blue sky filled with elongated white clouds. After seemingly weeks of rain I had real tears of joy just being in the out-of-doors (it has been a very long week).

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Wood- Oh my...a bit of a break sounds like it's 'in order'

How about a soak in the hot tub tonight after that massage? Celebrate and recover?

Kay- I agree! I am not worried about me...it's all those other drivers! I see this morning on the news, there were funnel clouds in the air. I was wondering with what I was seeing while driving...
Spa day and massage table set up. Great idea!

Happy Wednesday!

We're setting up the massage table over by the waterfall, hop on Wood, you're first!

Maui, glad you made your drive too! It can be crazy driving in the downpours, I'm usually more worried about the other drivers than myself....at least I know what I'm doing!

I have today off, it's my spa day...hope to get to aerial yoga, then my facial.

I am so stiff I can barely walk!!! Between working in the wood pile, raking out flower beds, restarting my running program and I started with a program called Zoe (which is Greek for Life) where the trainer really worked our core; anyway I feel just a little bit battered! (or maybe its just the thought of having 40 kids!) Almost glad it's raining. Maybe I can back off a little today. Think it's possible to get a massage on the deck tonight?

Weather conversations? Well, yeah we do it a lot, but it has a lot of influence on how we live.

All right Maui! So what shall we do to celebrate your full recovery?

Happy anniversary Brenda! Now I agree with JAQ; get rid of that delicious cake before it ruins your progress.

Good morning Choc!

Have a great day everyone!

Kay- Glad you made it home safely...
Yep...weather changing for sure.
I was on 80 today. Rainy, hail, wind...dark curtains of clouds.
But I too made it up there and back again...

I think it's funny how we west coasters can sound about 'weather'. Bet it makes you left coasters giggle.

Wood- hehe...40 kids...hahaha...I don't even know what to say, but it makes me smile.

emoticon We did make it back from dad's finally! It took over 4 hours to make the drive which usually takes 2...I think at least an hour on a 5ish mile stretch waiting to get to the chain control gates. Didn't know that many people would be heading eastbound on I-80 on Easter night! So I didn't get much sleep, but made up for it last night, with a 9 hour snooze! emoticon

And more rain/snow today, but it let up before I left work, I figured it's because I ran in today, so was going to walk home. I do control the weather, it seems!

Got to go pour some wine for dinner, back later!

Oh...and I forgot...I had my last doc appointment with the back doc, to get an 'all done' after my accident. So, what does this mean? I am better and get to get on with my life. Oh yes... :)
Doc said he was really pleased with the report he got from PT. Guess the PT guy said I was a good patient and did my homework.
Thanks for all the support along the way for 4 months! Woohoo.

When I drove down to my Dad's and back...my back, hip, knee all did fine...so I guess that was a good test! Yippee...free again!

BRENDA throw the cake out or freeze a few pieces. Although delicious it takes a lot ofminutes to burn 100 calories and a lot of hours to burn a pound. Let the critters enjoy your cake.

Yes I read WOOD hat 40 sons and dughters too. I was impressed and tried to do the math but got perplexed..

Morning Deckies!

Spent much of the night awake, listening to the sweet rain...might gotten1 inch overnight...not sure. But every drop helps!

Wood- Yep...hunt was super fun. These 'kids' are quite competitive...seems the big prizes were the artisan beers. Future SIL got all but one...haha...he was quite pleased with himself. The Lotto scratchers were a first in our house..hehe...the kids won back in small prizes, exactly what we paid for the tickets. Cash was won by the girls...hehe...chocolate was found by everyone...of course. ;)
Fun fun...

Brenda- the drought is quite scary. We have no official letter demanding we cut back. So, I am saving where I can, but deep watering my trees while I can. Like I have said before, If I were allowed to cut trees that are so close to my house I'd feel better. Not that I ever want to take out a tree, just want all my trees well cared for. My garden is on drippers and easy to control. This is the end of my 'winter' garden and I bet by June 1 I will be limited to just a few plants. That's my plan...sad...but I'll let the soil rest, compost on top...its all good. I will survive, right? Fruit trees are loaded.

OK...I am driving up to see my older son today...in the rain...haha...life id good!
Have a good day everyone.

Desert - I know you can "keep trekkin" to the end of the semester!

Mary - June 1 will come quick I'm certain. I Hope it goes smoothly until then.

Jaq - I feel the same way about runners. I built up to run a 5k a few years ago but it's just not my thing.

Maui - How's the garden looking? How's the drought impacting you? Are there restrictions?

Kay - Snow? Typical spring! I bet it's warmer this week.

Choc-Everything melted? When do you plan on getting the kayak out?

Wood - I swear I read that you had 40 sons and wives, not 40-year old sons and wives haha. I'm glad Easter was such a smash hit.

I had a wonderful weekend camping in Maryland off of the Potomoc River at a small campground called Smallwood State Park. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be returning there! It was the perfect test trip for our planned Acadia weeklong camping trip coming up at the end of May. I really hope the snow is gone up North by then!

This week I'm making a lot of decisions about my current volunteering schedule and committing to letting some things go for my sanity. I have to look out for myself first. I need to get rid of this anniversary cake (we celebrated 2 years married on Sunday) because it's killing my diet - it's an amazing combo- pumpkin cake with chocolate mousse filling and maple frosting. Sounds weird, but trust me, it's amazing.

Wood it was a joy reading your choir fun for Easter. Something special occurs with song and praise. Equal to enjoying the grand kidlets..More fun than getting back on the running circuit..

Okay kids! Holiday is over! Time to get back to work and healthy living! Fixed my log splitter so it'll be back to filling the wood shed for next winter! That, btw, fits under play, not work. However, it also fits under the healthy living! Great exercise!

JAQ - Nothing quite as great as being with the grandchildren! My first will be 12 in June! Can't believe it! As some of the veterans here know, she was a preemie and 1 lb.11 oz. The doctors gave her almost no chance of survival and almost 100 % chance of being seriously handicapped. Now she's 5' 4" tall, about 110 lbs. and is at the top of her class! Miracles do happen! Oh yeah! She's also beautiful! Life is good!

Maui - Aren't egghunts great?! Glad yours went well! I think we still have about 10 eggs that weren't found. Sort of fun, finding them over the summer as I work outside!

Going to get back into my training runs today. Since I haven't really run since I wrecked my bike back in November, I'll need to start all over again!

I think spring is finally close! Just about time to return to the creek for our silliness! I am definately ready to get silly!

Life is good!

Squeeze over and let me in the hot tub. I had a fun day with sons fmily which means i hve my Annbelle again. No school tomorrow so another play day.
I went over my calories because of wine and key lime pie, but only 93 cals, hopefully the long walk esed some of the indulgence. Zander got stuck on some powerful scents so I had to tractor pull him many times. He is such a tramp.

MAUI i m glad you got rain.. I dread seeing those fires start up.

Kay- Wow...weird...snow...rain...and of course you have to travel. What the heck??? Let us know you got home OK.

Everyone else...come join us in the hot tub!

Happy Easter everyone! I hope everyone else's Easter celebration was a great as ours was. For us, it was a 2 day event. Yesterday we had the family egghunt! Over 200 plastic eggs filled with all kinds of goodies (mostly not candy) spread out over about an acre. Everyone participates from our almost 40 sons and wives down through all the grandchildren! Like all our family events it gets a little crazy! Afterwards was our Easter dinner and yes, once again, I gained a significant amount of weight! Today was a really great Easter church service! Glor and I both sang in the choir and I also sang with the men's choir! I know I mentioned before (probably many times) that I love to sing in the choirs, but I'll say it again, i love to sing in the choirs. We've got a great director who picks very challenging upbeat music for us and it's just a great feeling to be part of something that you know sounds so powerful and moving! This afternoon was mostly spent taking Mom back to her home.

The eclipse yesterday morning was a total disappointment for me! I was up at 4 AM to help my son set up a half marathon and a 5K for the US Roadrunning orgaization. So we were out there for prime eclipse time, but very little was actually blocked out. Oh well, it was a great race event anyway!

So Maui, did it rain on your egghunt? I would think a rainy egghunt would be a wonderful event in California right about now!

Well I don't know about the rest of you, but after this very active weekend a little wine with friends in the hot tub sounds just about perfect. Join me there.

Life is good!

Not sure what time that eclipse was, but when I woke up, the moon was just hanging over the ridge and did appear to be partially eclipsed...but then maybe it was just some clouds! Although the sky otherwise is fairly clear.

Have to head to the store and pick up some ingredients for the blueberry pecan cake I'm bringing to my dad's for dinner tomorrow.

Back from the store! Didn't realize I hadn't posted this....so here I go!

The Moon is bright but a bit hazy as the clouds move in, To see the eclipse I have to get up at 5 am and the rising sun may interfere. This is a west coast event and i hoe someone here gets to see it.

Well that moon shines right in my bedroom window, maybe the eclipse will wake me up, then I can wake you up, Maui!

Larry's keeping himself out of trouble lately....good man!

All these new hiking boots laying around deck, makes me want to go shopping! And I did just get my REI dividend, and for some reason a credit on my REI visa card...but I'm looking at trail runners...I used to have some great Solomon trail runners that I loved, but they do wear out.

Left work early today, they migrated out computers to the corporate servers, and then I couldn't get into some of the programs I needed...and the boss was letting the staff go early because of Good Friday anyway, so I figured I'd had enough work for the week!

Afternoon Deckies!
Gosh...it's happened again...BUSY!

Beautiful moon last night indeed.

Wood- No April fool's joke played on me either...hmmmm...

Easter plans and evidence all over. 'Kids' will be here Sunday for brunch and egg hunt. No one is too old for an egg hunt. Of course, the forecast is for rain...just a bit...but gosh...really?
We will hide the eggs anyhow. We have numbers in some for prizes inside. Up inside tall trees is fair game. Should be fun.

Kay- I read your post to my hubby...lol...seriously...gray hair is right!

Wood- I bet Luv is totally gray living with you...haha. And your GD break skating...ouch. Yep...your family has learned a lot from you...all good.

Today my new boots are here. I bought new boots a month ago and the loop on the tongue broke . Had to return and order a new pair from REI...today they are on my feet! Haha...happy 'girl'.

Moon Eclipse in the early morning...who's waking me up so I can see?

Saw an incredible sunset, went on trail hike and cacti are in bloom, and there is Lunar eclipse this weekend. Getting every chance I can to get out and be active, but little worn out this week. Ready to sit in the hot tub and sip on some wine, plans to relax tomorrow, and maybe plan a family outing over the weekend. Happy Easter and Good Friday tomorrow!

CHOCLAHOLIC & KAYOTIC: Thanks for the welcome!

I'm about to go do my 65 minutes of cycling. Going backpacking this Saturday. I think I'm going to try and find a waterfall. Just got new hiking boots. Had to get men's (smallest they had was a size 6, but they fit!) because they sold out of womens everywhere! Stocked up on rope and cliff bars :)

Well, I woke up do a dusting of snow on the deck! It's gone now, but I guess you never know what Spring will bring...and we're supposed to get more rain/snow on Easter Sunday! I think it's because Larry and I are going to my dad's for dinner...when I had a broken leg we tried to head down there for Easter dinner, and had to turn back because the roads were closed...such is life in the Sierra!

And Larry may be missing riding (and hiking) but he's really trying to turn more of my hair grey as he confessed he went up the ladder into the attic yesterday....he didn't think it was too big a deal because he had his phone in his pocket....I'm still not sure how he hopped up the ladder since he can't weight his right leg, and maybe I don't want to know! emoticon

Got appointments done today, I had to take Larry to his doctor, then get him home and head over to my doctor. I wanted to get the oil changed, but they were busy, so I made an appointment for tomorrow....stuff has to get done!

We'll I am going to head to the hot tub for a soak, had a nice long walk after this morning's chaos, and I'm ready for a nice one!

emoticon Otempura... Glad to see you on the deck!

Wood... I only got "pranked" once yesterday (probably because I stayed home most of the day, LOL) ...

Sorry to hear about your gd's skating accident! :-(

Most of our 4-5 inches of snow that we got on the 31st melted yesterday, and today we're supposed to have a few thunder storms so that should get rid of the last few snow patches still "hanging out" in the woods!

Heading out for a quick hike before the storms get here... Will try to catch up on posts I missed when I get back

I just realized that I just got through April 1 without a single April Fool stunt here or on the deck! I must be getting old!!!! However it was a pretty nice day!

Jaq - Snuggling grandchildren has been a favorite activity in this house for quite a while. emoticon However we're watching them grow up in a hurry so we better get all the snuggling in while the snugglings good!

I'm glad to hear that your fairy godmother shows up on June 1 and will slow down your hectic world! Until then, enjoy the ride!

Speaking of grandchildren, my 11 y.o. gd broke her wrist roller skating on Saturday. Looks like she's going to be following in her grandfather's footsteps! Actually I've seen that trend coming for quite a while. Gonna be fun (and scary) watching her grow up!

Speaking of broken bones, Kay, I imagine Larry is just starting to get real antsy not being able to ride, etc.

Snow - You know I always worry when you're gone for too long a time!

Broke my hydraulic log splitter a couple of days ago. Think I better work on that today.

Life is good!

Just a quick dip tonight. My Grand daughter Annabelle is here and I want to snuggle with her.
The Jester Bunny came today and we did crafts and played in the park. We played pranks on my DH and house guest.

I wonder if this thread holds the record for number of posts on Sparks? Been around for a long time.

Life is good.
