Yep, Kay is right. I too have snow camped. Night time was when I was toasty warm...
I too had a zero degree bag, good tent and insulation from the snow.
I had a great trip in a very snowy winter in Yosemite. We snow shoed in and overnighted overlooking the Entire valley from above Bridalveil Falls. Stayed 3 nights...amazing trip.

Loves-Can't wait to hear more details of your upcoming adventure.

I've been snow camping before, and while it can get cold, I was warm in my long underwear, socks and 0 degree sleeping bag. You want good insulation underneath, and a tent that will stay dry, and you should be good! I'm sure all that is part of the training too!

Where we go will depend on where our WTC leaders determine there is enough snow. We'll go there as a group, with the WTC leaders in charge, so I'm not nervous about that aspect. Nervous about being cold and uncomfortable during the night though? Yes!

Loves- Very cool. So next...do you choose? Or have you chosen? High Sierra in the winter...beautiful and amazing, but very unpredictable, yes?

Hi all,

I did an online search just now, using 'Sierra Club Wilderness Training Courses' and came up with a list by area. There are apparently lots of them out there, offered all over the US.

The course runs from 8 - 10 weeks, depending on the club, and includes lots of time an attention on wilderness survival skills including compass and map reading, plus four outings, two of which will be overnighters, with one of those overnighters being held in snow country.

Signed up for a Sierra Club class on wilderness training which begins this January. Requirement is to be able to hike 10 miles ahead of the first class, which we have in the bag. Course will include two backpacking trips, my first foray into backpacking. I'm both excited and nervous, which is probably right where I should be at this point.

I've hit different parts of the PCT, so enjoy! Mostly the central CA parts in the Eastern Sierra, hard to beat.

My husband and I are traveling to Anaheim CA in March and I've heard the Pacific Crest Trail is not too far from there. I'd like to do a short day hike while we're there. I'm new to hiking and am very slowly getting into shape. Hiking the PCT is definitly a Bucklist item for me.

Such great plans from everyone - we have some exciting plans to spend 6 weeks in Europe this fall. In the meantime, there are a lot of trails and mountains closer to home that are calling my name.....

Kay, and if you go soon after the road to Glacier Point opens in the spring and the trails open to..you can hike down to Nevada Falls and then Vernal and down to Happy Isle...when the spring run off is full, this walk is most spectacular.
But then again, if you hike up to Vernal and then Up to Nevada and then back down, hop in the car and drive around to Glacier point, you can pack a picnic dinner and stay for sunset and watch the alpine glow kiss half dome. All in a day... emoticon

Oh well...of course Yosemite is on my list. I am thinking April, poppies and waterfalls. June has the highest water typically, but more people. And I love poppies. Might just have to go in Feb for a snowy Valentine's day as an option as well. Yup...Yosemite is a given.
Wood, sure hope you get there one day. Special place.

Kits - We share a couple of destinations that are still in my future: the Pacific Northwest is definately on our list for "some day" as well as Yousemite. So many places, so little time.

My husband and I had written down our travel bucket lists a few years ago. On New Year's Eve we spent some time going over our lists to see which ones we will do in 2013. Last year we went to Yosemite and the year before Kauai! We decided on the Pacific Northwest in August for this year. I have multiple places in Washington I want to see and a few in Oregon.

Maui - Maui is on our list as well!

I also take an annual winter trip with my sisters. This winter we are going to Florida. We'll be doing some things in the Fort Myers area as well as going to Sanibel Island which is also on my bucket list.

Take one day at a time and do the best you can

Hmmm... Well, along with the usual "lose weight & exercise more" and "declutter my house" goals, I guess up near the top of my list will have to be to do a couple more backpacking trips (this time with a MUCH MUCH lighter backpack! Lesson learned last summer LOL) ... Would also love to do a "kayak camping" trip just because it would include two of my favorite activities rolled into one...and finally, I'd also like to create a raised bed garden plot this spring next to my house (which will need to include having a fence installed to keep all the deer out of said garden! I'm thinking of an "old fashioned" picket fence with a couple arbor gates)

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

Don't know if it's a bucket list but I still have 2 skating dreams left. I've already skated at Lake Placid. Now I would love to skate at Rockerfeller Center beneath the Christmas tree (I guess I have to wait another 300 or so days for that one). And I want to skate on the canal in Ottawa. I think it's called Redieu. My spelling may be off a little. But they have a winter festival there every year and lots of people show up to skate on their canal. It's gotta be a blast!

Good things come to those who SKATE!

Yay...2013 dreams...

I want to see Maui. I have never been. emoticon
We have been researching the bike paths down Haleakala...And yes, my bike is still in the living room. :)
Also on this years' bucket list is New Haven to visit my son while he is there.
And Grand Canyon...haven't been there either. emoticon

Okay I figured we were due for a new thread. So how about if we start talking about what adventures we'd like to take maybe this coming year?

I'll start by saying that I've had the pleasure of meeting face to face several Outdoor People over the last couple of years. By doing so, I've made some really interesting friends. This year, my goal is to meet up with at least 1 more and what.......?........hike? kayak? waterski? bike? No plans yet, but I'll work on it.

How about you? What do you want to do?

Life is good!
Wood
