One of my tricks is to get cookbooks from the library. It lets me check out some of the recipes before purchasing a cookbook. Also, for anyone interested in some of the recipes from Eat Shrink and Be Merry, go to the web site: http://www.foodnetwork.ca/ontv/shows/Eat -Shrink-and-Be-Merry/show.html?titleid =106377
Or even better....check out the Eat Shrink and Be Merry group here at Spark. Many of the recipes are available there. Happy Cooking/Baking
I'm in the UK, but my favourite baking cookbooks are Williams-Sonoma Essentials of Baking and Rachel Allen's Bake. Both are excellent resources and have great recipes. (I've yet to buy a cookbook regarding lighter baking... so I'm open to suggestions!)
There is a wonderful series of books, the latest being Eat, Shrink and Be Merry. It is the third in a series, the earlier ones being Looney Spoons, and Crazy Plates. As you can guess, they play a lot with words, but the books are as enjoyable to read as cook with. And the recipes are great, and have all the nutritional info. There is also a Spark Group called Eat Shrink and Be Merry which exchanges recipes.
i'm addicted to cookbooks and have a full bookshelf dedicated to them! I also agree that taste of home cookbooks/magazines are great. If you are wanting to stick w/healthy cooking, a subscription to cooking light is always wonderful, and, in my opinion, the authority on home baking is Dorie Greenspan's Baking from My Home to Yours. I am in a group online that bakes through the entire cookbook, one recipe a week and everything is wonderful! She is also great about teaching techniques and general rules.

My fav cook books are by Taste of Home. Most of them provide the nutritional values to the recipes, they are always full color and so nice! If you look them up on line, they will often have sales. Sometimes you can get the books for $5 each!
