(Not as bad as I had feared...but I definitely feel the bloat. Sodium is very hard to avoid in Thanksgiving favorites. Mashed potatoes and gravy without salt were not worth the effort.)

The American Heart Assn. suggests less than 1500 mg of sodium a day. Some people are salt sensitive like me. I keep daily intake between 500 and 1200 mg with approval of my internist. I have a damaged heart and don't want to make it work harder by retaining fluid. It really depends on the health of the individual and what, if any, medications s/he is on.

Yeh, Shamrock. I hear you. We are salt sensitive. I gain 2 and sometimes almost 3 pounds overnight when I have more than around 1200 mg in a day. I just plain feel better with a lower sodium intake. I told my internist that I was generally keeping sodium between 500-1000 mg daily, and she said that was okay for me. Don't want to make more work for a weakened heart.

I can tell when I don't pay enough attention to the numbers.. swollen ankles, stressed - which means higher BP.

Whew! My average for the week had been 629 mg per day. But yesterday I went to McDonald's, and I ate their Big Breakfast with Hotcakes. I looked up the nutrition information on their official website. WOW! Is that ever loaded with fat and salt!
