I'm not much of a veggie eater - not many types - but I too eat them raw most of the time. I doesn't seem to matter whether I like the veg or not, after about 1/2 a c I start to gag (mashed potatoes to beans). I can't eat a lot of veggies because of my Crohn's Disease - anything that is a seed, has a seed casing, etc. gets stuck and hurts like the dickens.

I watch my calories also. I try to keep in a range of 1200-1500. I eat the majority of my veggies raw, to help with my sodium range.

I have to watch the calories. When I keep my sodium as low as I need to, I barely get enough carbs but have to be careful what I boost them up with because of the Diabetes. if an item doesn't have salt it usually has fat and/or sugar.

I suppose I should really pay more attention to calorie counts. But I tend to concentrate on sodium and protein contents.

Wow - I don't think the actual cutting back of sodium has affected my weight at all except for an increase when I've had too much but that's water weight that I lose when the Congestive Heart Failure is over. I think most of my loss is cutting way back on my carbs and we hardly ever have breads or starchy veggies anymore. That's great news for you and 60 lbs in 5 months is amazing - congrats!

For the Canadian's on here - I've been using Victorian Epicure spices and mixes from British Columbia. They are almost all very low in sodium yet still taste good without having to add another flavor to your dish - I really dislike those low sodium mixes and spices that add lemon or some other taste. I want sodium but can't have it but I do not want to change the flavor of foods. I'm trying to keep my intake to 1200 mg a day but definitely under 2000. If I go over the 1200 for a few days in a row, I do go into CHF with Endema in my ankles, upper abdomen, neck and fingers. I often swell but not badly yet I can gain up to 10 lbs. in water retention, and in a matter of days. This time, with extra CHF meds, I lost 9.6 lbs. - 3.6 overnight on the 5th and 5.8 overnight on the 7th and another .2 this morning. Feel like a yoyo. Then I blew it again today and had a grilled cheese sandwich with my DGS at lunch and it threw my sodium intake over. It's a never ending battle, isn't it!

Low sodium and cooking from scratch has made me feel much healthier/better. I am keeping my CHF in control and very seldom have edema now. One day of health eating at a time and before you know it you are doing better and feeling better. My doctor is so pleased; I have had to decrease my fluid and B/P pills. Try Penseys mail order spices; they have a good selection of no salt blends and they are much better than what you can find in the store.

The regular canned beans do have a lot of sodium. Lately, I have found lower sodium beans in the store. I let them soak if I have the time. The BEST way to have the salt reduced is to buy the dried beans.
Hope your bp gets regulated Deb!

I got a pot of navy beans on a cooking. I love beans but hate all the sodium in canned beans. Even after I rinse them, they are still too much, I think.

I have been cutting back on sodium for little over two months now. The past two mornings I have been having some dizziness. I went to get my bp checked. I got the best reading that I have had since going on bp meds 6 years ago. It was 108/72 woohoooo. My bp reading had been running around 132/82 on average with the meds.

I checked the website and it had what I was looking for. I was wondering what amount of salt is recommanded. I had gone to an nutritionist a few years ago and she had said 1200-2400.
I didn't want to eliminated too much, so this will be a good guide. Thanks

I agree. One of the local groups here has lists for Thanksgiving. Everything in it has sodium in excess amounts. They even ask for us to give canned carrots. It's taking everything in me not to say something about it. I still might. I know the organizers mean well.

I think that lowering, sodium intake is one of the most important things, that you can do. It just about has to go hand in hand with eating healthier or you really are defeating your purpose, I think. Just my humble opinion.

When I was advised to cut back on salt, I got out my bread maker machine. I make the wheat bread but cut the salt in half. I make the 2# loaf, cut in 4 sections. Each section I get 4-5 slices. I freeze the rest. I have tried the sara lee and have had good luck.

I had a tough couple of days myself, mainly from eating out.

If you scroll down on your food tracker, there is a button called "See Today's Full Report." Click that and you can see which foods you ate that had that hidden sodium.

Thanks, Patti!

I did better on keeping the sodium low yesterday. However, I will need to be very careful this afternoon, as It's only after lunch, and I'm already over 580 mg. because of eating some store-made tuna salad for lunch after my workout class.

Yes, it turns out that excess water retention and high blood pressure are often related. And sleep problems such as snoring can also complicate the matter. My hypertension was diagnosed because I went to a doctor and asked about my swollen ankles that were worse before my periods, but never really seemed to go down. At that time, though, I had not learned very well about not eating salty food. The first thing that doctor did was put me on a strong diuretic!

I can appreciate your concern about my meds, however my inherited hypertension situation causes me to retain very large amounts of water. I have been taking prescription diuretics for more than thirty years, plus drinking tea, and also keeping my dietary sodium very low. As I've stated before, it's an inherited condition that's been diagnosed in several generations on my father's side, and first showed up in me when I was 29 years old and wore size 7. Modern medicine has not determined why some people have this condition: a kidney scan appeared normal. It is the reason why I try to keep my sodium level below 1000 mg, especially in hot weather because the problem is worse then. Also, drinking extra water does not help. Hydrochlorothiazide is an integral part of my blood pressure medication, and I have a prescription supply of lower-dose extra pills that I can take if I occasionally eat too much salty food, as I did all week last week.

I stopped watching the sodium on Thanksgiving, and while eating with family on Friday and Saturday. The result is that I have retained a lot of water. Yesterday I got the sodium in my diet back under control, and in the afternoon I took an extra, low-dose diuretic pill, and will probably do the same today.

Good morning. Today is a new day and day to work on correcting what we did wrong yesterday. I learn from mistakes and I'm doing a lot of learning.

My Thanksgivig was okay. I did not overdo it. I tried to keep my sodium low and I did on some days and other days it was a little high.

How was everyone's Thanksgiving?

Ours was really good, but really noisy and I took the day off from watching calories.

Vicki, I try and get hubby to cook large batches of meat so that we don't have to use the high sodium deli meats. Doing the low sodium has made me appreciate the spices that I really do enjoy. For me it's chili powder, cumin, garlic, curry.. even cinnamon is tasting better. Try, for example, air-popped popcorn with honey drizzled and sprinkle honey.

We got New Orleans Style BBQ spice, Memphis Spice Rub,and Montreal Spice Rub. All 3 do have a little too much salt but I cut back on sodium for the rest of the meal when we have it. I have found a regular salt called Salt Sense, that's real salt but 33% less sodium. And I use the seasoning salt that's 25% less sodium. We tried using the no-salt varieties and the basic ingredient seems to be pepper, and I just can't handle that much pepper. So I just go with cut down versions of the real thing.

I recently started this low salt diet and I'm frantically trying to find seasonings that work and make food interesting for me again. I made some soy sauce substitute. I haven't actually used it yet, but I'll post as soon as I do, and let you know how it worked for me. I cleaned out my spice cupboard and removed all of the spices that had added salt, and replaced them with salt-free versions of All Seasoning, Cajun Creole for example. There are several, but I can't remember them off-hand. So far those two have actually been tolerable and quite tasty actually. I even ate a boiled egg this weekend with the salt-free All Seasoning and it wasn't bad at all. Eggs are one of the things I have a hard time eating without salt!

Good morning! What are the new spices you are trying? Spices are my week spot, and haven't tried any thing with out asking some one what it is like first.
Hope you are having a great day too.

Good Morning Team. Today is going to be a very nice day. Hubby is outside grilling up a bunch of meats for ready to eat meals. Trying out some new spices so we'll see how they turn out. Hope you're having a great day and will start posting to the team so we can support each other more.

Had a bad night last night. I have bad acid reflux and had been using a cheaper medicine for it. Doesn't work for crap. So I'll go today and pick up the Omeprazole I know works for me. Trying to save a few dollars but last night it was so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. Took some baking soda and water and that eased it but I hate taking the baking soda as it's full of sodium.

Just got back from 3 hours of walking and shopping, also paying bills. Will be heading out in a hour to go to to Cocoa, Fl., for something my husband wants to see about. May stop somewhere to eat but not sure. Hope this is the start of a great month for everyone.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN ALL!!!
I hope it'll be a fun time for you and your little ones and maybe not so little ones. We're prepared for about 25 kids to stop by. That's about the norm for our area so that's what we planned for. We love to see the costumes the kids are wearing and some of the parents will dress up too. Makes for a fun evening.

Hope everyone is safe from "Sandy" and having a good day. I know it's hit a lot of people hard and I just hope the ones that suffered damage will be ok.

If you read my blog for today, I'm back off the scale. I just don't need the mood swings it brings on depending on what the numbers show. I'm going to trust myself to do what I need to do and know I'm getting healthier without a piece of machinery telling me otherwise just because my numbers might be up one day from the next. I'm really tired of living that way.
I really want to get off the "diet" roller coaster and just be healthier. So that's the plan and I'm sticking to it.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and are doing something you really enjoy doing. This has been a stressful day for me as I've been working towards how I want to eat for the rest of my life and then putting that plan into action. But I think I've gotten it how I want it now as you can read about in todays blog or check out my spark page.

Because of eating at events Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday last week, my sodium counts have been higher than MY goal (which is trying to stay under 1,000 mg), and my edema is showing. To complicate the matter, a cold caught me, and that probably made my eyes puffy, too. Feeling better today, I'm working at getting the sodium back under control again. Tomorrow should be better.

Am going to try to eat more soy nuts. 1/4C of the honey roasted has 8g of complete protein (as good quality as steak), 130 calories, 7g of fat, no cholesterol, 4g of fiber, and only 20mg of sodium. Makes a tasty, crunchy snack.

Going to a poolside party this afternoon, and taking foods that I can eat, but also getting some out of my pantry that I can't eat.

It's the Daniel Fast Detox. On it you're only allowed veggies and fruit , and water. No seasonings other than pepper or vinegar, no meats, and no sauces, pastas, etc. This is just for the 10 day detox. The Daniel Fast Diet Plan allows more ( see my blog), which I explained in my blog Friday or Saturday. Right now I'm finding it extremely difficult to stick to the detox plan. I'm on day 3 and feel like I'm starving to death. So I'm going off the detox and finishing up the rest of the 7 days on the straight Daniel Fast Diet. We'll see if that makes any kind of changes.

For the edema, try bathing in 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. The dermatoligist has hubby doing it. You soak the area in the mixture and leave on for 10 minutes then rise it off. Do it daily for 2 weeks, then 1-2 times a week there after. Hope it helps.

I never had adema before. Now It is hard to get away from it as my family are all salt-aholics. I find that whatever I prepare for myself I am fine, but packaged meals always make me feel terrible. My adema was so bad that it made permanent dark spots on my feet, and my toes were red. I had a little bit of soy sauce last night and my feet look like monster feet.

Happy July 1st. Hope today is a wonderful day for everyone.
I don't plan to do a lot today since I did so much yesterday. I did get in a hours walk this morning but that'll be it today. My back is letting me know it's ready for the heating pad.

2 hour drive to pick up my daughter from camp, then drove up to Poulsbo, a town with lots of Scandinavian shops that we walked through. They have a great bakery there, and we succumbed to the temptations there, and hopefully walked off the calories. Then a ferry ride into Seattle then home.

Tomorrow will be my shopping day.

Picked 12 quarts of strawberries.Canned 5 pints of sugar free jam and froze 2 quarts of fresh berries.Saved 2 quarts to eat and have 3 quarts to make jam with tomorrow. Tomorrow I have to pick sugar snap peas from my garden and freeze them. It is nice to go back to canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. Enjoy your week end.

Today has been a long day for me and it's not done yet. I got in 5 hours of walking today and my legs have pretty much disowned me. I'll take it really easy the rest of the day. Got in all my shopping for the foods needed for the 10 day Daniel Fast I start on tomorrow. So everything is ready. Hubby is on board with me doing it which was a surprise, but we'll see how the next 10 days go. Wish me luck.

Tomorrow I will be taking my kids to the library and continuing to test out some low sodium recipes. So far I have found some that are even more tasty than the salted ones.

All my best,

Lets talk about our day and what's happening.
Tomorrow will be our bill paying and grocery day so I'll be on my feet for hours again. I'm going to make sure I wear my pedometer. Last shopping day I got in over 20,000 steps.
