Hi~

I believe I'm one of those people who are addicted to salt....none of the other reasons I crave it fit. I will eat a whole bottle of olives if left to my own devices. I don't crave sweets at all....just salt. I drink plenty of water so I guess I'm just going to have to grit my teeth through withdrawal. Yuck

Hello -I just joined this team. I have been "cooking from scratch" for some time now. So I was shocked when I began to track sodium as one of my nutrients. Even carrots have sodium! Having lowered my intake my rings and shoes are loose.

Interesting info here.

I am retired ~ I no longer have an excuse to not take care of myself.

I have always heard that you crave salt when your blood sodium is either too low or too high. You can also crave it when estrogen or testosterone levels fluctuate, like during that time of the month or the monthly flux men experience in their testosterone levels. Emotionally, salty foods might be your comfort foods, so when you need to be comforted, your body and mind have been conditioned to crave something salty. Hope that helps!! emoticon

Having to eat restaurant food makes watching the sodium really hard! Here are a few suggestions that come to mind. Get fresh veggies from the salad bar. As much as possible avoid any sauces, gravies, and salad dressings. If you eat meat, try grilled to avoid any breading. Don't eat bread, buns, or rolls. You could ask if your food can be prepared with no salt added. Soups are almost always very salty, as are pickles. Maybe try seasoning your food with pepper instead of salt, or carry some salt-free seasoning with you?

Stress makes a difference in most of our bodies' functions.

Also, your taste buds become accustomed to the flavor of salt. When you eat less, you become acclimated to that flavor level. After you've cut back for a while, then food that has higher salt levels tastes nasty.

Sorry, I'm late with this, but thank you so much for your food (minus the salt!) for thought, FWBlack.
I have never heard of the stress connection.

Here are 7 Reasons Why You Might Crave Salt...

If you crave salt from time to time, do not be alarmed. Salt is important to your body and your taste buds. Your body needs salt to survive. Cells float in a salty fluid called interstitial fluid and a salty solution—cytoplasm—surrounds the nucleus of your cells. Food without salt can be almost unbearably bland. Salt intensifies the flavor of food. It’s even added to sweet foods to intensify the flavor.

It seems natural to crave salt, but the question is how much do you crave and why? Do you crave a few potato chips or is your craving so intense that you want to lick a plateful of salt? Here are 7 reasons you may be craving salty foods.

1. Dehydration
Dehydration can occur for many reasons. Vomiting and diarrhea can make your body lose fluid. Not drinking enough water can cause you to become dehydrated. Dehydration can also occur if you just started an exercise routine and you’re not adequately replenishing your liquids to accommodate the increased loss of fluid.

2. Illness
Taking medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or sickle cell anemia can throw off the body’s balance of sodium and potassium by interfering with a regulating hormone called aldosterone, which can cause salt cravings. Salt craving could also be an indication of a thyroid disorder from the lack of iodine.

3. Pregnancy
No one knows exactly why many pregnant women crave salt. It could be hormonal, or because your body is trying to regulate itself due to vomiting from morning sickness.

4. Salt Addiction
The average American consumes around 15 pounds of salt every year. The more salt you eat, the more you want and you can actually become addicted to it.

5. Adrenal Exhaustion
The adrenal glands sit at the top of each kidney and are involved in functions related to the lungs. They also metabolize blood sugar and carbohydrates and help regulate the central nervous system. They assist in cardiovascular function and hormone production, as well as gastrointestinal and liver functions. The adrenal glands help the body respond to changes caused by stress and emotions. Not getting enough sleep, stress, poor nutrition, trauma or pregnancy are just a few of the reasons adrenal exhaustion can occur.

6. Mineral Deficiency
Poor nutrition, starvation diets, fasting or diets lacking green leafy vegetables and whole grains could cause a mineral deficiency (particularly magnesium) and make you crave salt.

7. Electrolyte Imbalance
Electrolytes help control the regulation of fluids in the body. Poor nutrition or drinking too much water—which could flush minerals from your system—can cause an electrolyte imbalance, making you crave salt.

Using Salt
It is best to avoid any kind of processed salt—even many brands that are labeled “sea salt.” Processing leaches the minerals out of sea salt so it’s important to find the type that is unrefined. Check your health food store for unrefined mineral or sea salt.

Your body requires some salt, but a little goes a long way. If your cravings aren’t satisfied by eating something salty, you might want to consider visiting your doctor.

Yes, but not a low salt version. Just your basic sour cream and cream cheese base with garlic and whatever herbs strike my fancy at the time. I don't make it often, as it contains 2 key ingredients that I try to avoid. Though I like to create and experiment and this is a challenge I might just take on....

Welcome!

Never cared for salt on the margarita myself. Chips, I can do without salt here too .... that is, if I have enough garlic dip. emoticon

Just joined the team - I too have salt cravings - as a kid - would eat salt straight from the shaker - now while I don't cook with salt (to help with the over salt intake) I have days where I just crave salt - yeah! for the margarita on the rocks with salt. I am pretty good about not adding extra salt - but will go for the chips, and salt foods over sweets. So what I have I found out:

1) Cravings for salt is a reaction to stress
2) there is a medical condition called adrenal fatique
3) I have found that accupunture helps - but mine is directly related to stress - the more stress the more salt I crave

So am looking for help to reduce my salt intake - sours as an alternative seem to help - water seems to help but still am working on it. Looking for support.

Chips and pretzels. I remember as a child I used to literally crunch down on those pretzels sticks just for the salt. Can't do that today without retaining water like crazy.

There's no try ... only do

Thank you, MSHelen21! I remember googling on salt previously but must have skipped the word, craving! That certainly produced results.
Interestingly, the most common cause seems to be dehydration.
I'm not so great with the water drinking. emoticon
Thanks again,
Pam

Hi Pam - I just googled salt cravings and a wealth of links came up. Yes, it sounds like there could be several reasons one craves salt.

You sound like me wanting chips and nuts, but I really don't eat too much cheese and don't really eat the fish. I also stay away from the salt shaker.

Hi there:
I'm starting to worry about my salt cravings and am wondering if there could be some deficiency that brings them on. (I'm sorry if you may have discussed this previously.)
I don't use a salt shaker, but am continuously looking for the salties.
You can put a yummy, creamy sweet dessert in front of me, and I'll be saying, Where's the potato chips? Or the salty nuts? Or the smoked salmon? Or the herring? Or the cheese?
I'm sure this is an issue for many of you who have joined this team.
Any ideas?
Thnx,
Pam
