Hey Dotti...did you wonder what happened to everyone? I found out by accident that Cindy has asked everyone to post on this heading now, which is the same subject, just under a new heading. She said that there was more than one heading where people were all posting about the same thing so now it has been incorporated into this one, so stop here from now on and join all of us to keep up with each other. It's the Daily Sodium Check-In Keeping It Low.

I'm Lonna and I live in northeastern Indiana.

sodium intake today is only 1182 a little low. But I can not add anything or I will go over in calories. Oh well, I will do better tomorrow. I did put a little salt on my corn on the cob. So that probably raised it a little. Hard to judge.emoticon had fish for dinner, with tossed salad and small red potatoes. Finished up with a mini ice cream sandwich. I am trying to eat mostly berries, fruits and veggies from farmers markets and our garden. Everything is so fresh and so tasty!!!!

If you want to read a great article on the dangers of salt, look at a blog by SPARKBIRDY it is "Day 8 P-O-W-E-R Challenge-Cut the Salt. In the blog she gives a site of an article. cspinet.org/nah/articles/salt.html This is a real eye opener. It's long but very worth reading. I showed the part about salt's effects on the kidneys to my husband who is a diabetic with protein leakage into the urine. I think it made him realize I am not just being mean cutting his salt. He isn't complaining as much.

What a great job you two are doing! I did a very bad job yesterday and have no excuses - 1700, which is still within a good range but a little too high for me. Today's a new day so I will get a handle on that. I love those dark chocolate ones, too - that's the ones that I buy when I buy them. Nice to have a little treat once in a while (or 1 every day..hee hee).

1331 today

Wound up in one of those pickles where I was delayed and did not have my go-to snacks with me. Having 2 hours to kill and too far to go home and eat dinner and come back, I decided to go into Safeway and bought a caesar salad. Their dressing is in a packet. Bought Tillamook Italian shredded blend, and put on 1/2 cup, and 2 tablespoons of the Caesar. Tossed the parmesan and croutons. Did the trick in curbing my hunger.

Glad I leave myself sodium room for stuff like this. Also had a chocolate chip cookie, and still managed a good number, though I went over on fat...

Actually I have one mint a day. They are 60 calories and they are the dark chocolate. My dh and I started that some time ago with the sugar free mint patties. I track it along with all our other food. It's supposed to be our treat at the end of the day for being good. However, I found I couldn't use the sugar free, because of gas and bloating etc. So I switched to the regular. They have the exact same amount of calories as the sugar free, but not the side effects. My dh still has to use the sugar free because he is diabetic and he doesn't get the side effects, thank god. The other night I confess I had a second one. Occasionally I will do that when I am low in my daily calorie range. But I don't make a habit of it.emoticon

Great job Quorndawg and Dotti. Quorndawg, you're right about the heat - it's been so humid here you can hardly breathe and today thru most of this week, it's to be in the 90's again with high humidity so it's really tough; all I do is sweat and drink so I try to stay in as much as possible. My count was 1554 yesterday, which was good for me. I like to track my food first, too; it seems to help me keep on track better for both calories and sodium. Dotti, I have a bag of York Mint Jr. Patties in the drawer that I have every once in a while. Yummy!

QUORNDAWG AND LONNA, YOU ARE BOTH DOING A FANTASTIC JOB. I AM STILL TRACKING BEFORE I EAT, AND IT HELPS ME IN A LOT OF WAYS. 1. SOMETIMES IT STOPS ME FROM EATING JUST BECAUSE ITS THERE. I REMEMBER THAT IF I EAT WHAT I ALREADY HAVE RECORDED, I WILL BE AT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CALORIES AND SODIUM. I KNOW IF I EAT SOMETHING ELSE, I WILL HAVE TO TAKE AWAY SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD BE EATING FOR MY MEAL. 2. IT HELPS ME FIND OUT WHAT I CAN EAT AND WHAT WILL PUT ME OVER.

TODAY I AM A LITTLE BIT HIGHER THEN I WANTED WITH SODIUM, BUT NOT TOO BAD AND MY CALORIES ARE FINE. SO I AM GOING WITH IT AS IS. SODIUM 1681. AT THE END OF THE DAY I ADDED ONE YORK MINT BECAUSE I WAS FEELING DEPRIVED. LOLemoticonemoticon

Mine was 1312 Saturday and 1154 Sunday. Saturday had the room so induldge myself real salted butter on my air-popped popcorn.

Seem to be tolerating the lower numbers OK without any adverse side effects. Then again, weather not quite at hot in the Pacific NW - didn't even crack 70 over the weekend - so that probably helps.

Great job, Dotti; it's very hard when you go out to eat trying to select foods that are lower in sodium than others and the best thing to do is what you did, eat small portions of what you want and balance it the rest of the day. Mine was 1492, which was better. I'm beginning to not be afraid to incorporate a little more sodium into my diet and it's getting better. I sure don't want more leg cramps! UGH!!emoticon

Today was a challenge. We went out after church for a pancake and sausage breakfast. We had to go because it was put on by the school's spanish club for a trip they are planning to take. So again I threw caution to the wind and ate 2 sausage patties and two pancakes. But I was still able to maintain my calorie and sodium intake by being careful the rest of the day. I made that low fat, low sodium, wheat macaroni and tomato soup. The only other things I put in were onions, carrots and seasonings. No extra salt. And it is really good.
My sodium intake for the day is 1458.---Right on emoticon

I can't believe it. When I had entered everything, I was in both my calorie and sodium range! Even with two of my sister in laws famous chocolate chip cookies. emoticon Sodium was 1492---Unbelievable!!! Until I got to the cookies I was trying to be careful, but then I threw caution to the wind and ate two cookies. Thought I had blown it. emoticon

I did better today, stayed in range, sodium 1557. I saw my Dr. yesterday but forgot to ask her about sodium levels. We were too busy discussing some new medical problems. I have to stop exercising until I have a bunch of test. Not heart related.

We are having our summer festival here in our little town. Tonight we went to a chicken barbecue for the K of C, Now we have been watching a fire works display right from our living room window. It was beautiful. Tomorrow is a parade and tomorrow night a steak feed for the Volunteer Fire Dept. My husband has been a member for over 50 years, now an honorary member. His father was a member before him and now our son and grandson are members (4 generations of volunteer firemen). I used to be in the auxiliary too. It is a fun filled weekend. I managed to stay within calorie and sodium range tonight, hope I can tomorrow night as well. No, I will stay in range!!! I WILL emoticonemoticon

Quorndawg, I sometimes live through the day knowing that I'm treating myself to a Skinny Cow bar that evening (real ice cream would taste even better); how pathetic is that? LOL Glad that you enjoyed it anyway and today is a new day. Dotti, I, too, had a bad day yesterday and had only 1372 for my count. Dr has put me back on water pills three times a week and said that I have to keep my count up between 1500-1600 so I don't dehydrate again and that is harder than I thought it would be. I was so used to cutting it down as much as possible, now I'm told to eat a bit more! It was a lot easier to cut it out altogether than to balance it to a certain number throughout the day! UGH!!!!

Weird numbers tonight.

Sodium 1187. That will be my nutritional silver lining.

Went over in fat; broke the bank on carbs and calories. Had our summer company barbecue. The ice cream bars - hey - they're low in sodium! No other nutritional value, but were darn good. Lots of activity hopefully made up a little for that.

Was a nice day and got some good pictures of the Blue Angels flying around.

Great job, Sparkies!! Mine was 1499, need to bring it up just a bit more. Dotti, you have a lot to think about and work with and I think you're doing a terrific job of trying to keep things in control. The potassium pills gave me terrible abdominal cramps from day one and didn't do a lot for the bowel situation, either, so now I am off of them, as well as the water pill...well, for now anyway. LOL Today's a new day to keep things in check and we can do this!!

Staying more consistent--today sodium was 1522--right in range! Good work both of you! We will find the answer and the happy medium together.

Lonna I too am on potassium supplement. I take two tablets a day. Each one has 750mgs of potassium. I have to take it because I also take hydrochlorot tab. 50mg. And that has a water pill that deplete the potassium, so I have to replace it. For high blood pressure along with avapro 150mg. It works, my blood pressure is fine. I have been on it for at least 15 years.

I do have a heart problem. For about 3 years I have been in atrial fib. I have to take digoxin and atenolol to control my heart rate and warfarin to prevent clots. That is why I have to be so careful with exercising. The doctor said to exercise but at a slower pace.

Great job both of you!!! It does take a lot of time to read labels but after a while you begin to just know what brands to look for and it does get easier; it's more time-consuming than anything else!! My total yesterday was 1524 so I feel really good about that. We're doing a GREAT job!! emoticon

1149 today. I was lower but after reading of the cramps people have had I decided to eat some sun chips and had the calorie room for a wine cooler to go with it. emoticon

Cottage cheese - had to give it up. 420mg per serving, and I try to max 350mg for each meal.

Thanks everyone for the support.

Lonna, you are right about the cottage cheese. There is a lot of sodium in it. There seems to be in a lot of the dairy products. Yet they want you to have them. I guess I will just have to lower my portions, like you say.

I agree, good job Quorndawg!

I did better today-1544 sodium--If we all keep reading the labels, we will get this right. I went shopping today and looked for products to make a soup. I found low salt vegetable broth Its pacific natural foods organic vegetable broth low sodium l cup serving-15 cal, 140 mg sodium----Great value all natural diced no salt added tomatoes-1/2 cup serving 25 cal, 20mg sodium. wheat elbow macaroni-1/2 cup serving 210 cal, 0mg sodium. I thought I had found some pinto beans, but on reading the label again, I believe I made a mistake there. Too much sodium. I found all these products at Walmart. I am hoping to try and come up with a tasty, low calorie, low fat and low sodium soup. I love soup.emoticon

1625 yesterday. Dotti, be sure to watch the amount of cottage cheese that you eat as it's loaded with sodium. I usually put maybe a heaping dinner spoonful-size dollop on top of my fruit. Good job Quorndawg! This tracking is NOT easy but we can do this!!

Sodium is a little higher then planned. Sodium 1993--I was trying to balance everything by tracking what I planned for supper tonight. But I find when I try to get everything in the right range, I track even the vitamins and minerals. When one thing is right, something else goes wrong. I don't think I can ever be 100% in every thing at onceemoticon I think it must be the sausage we had for breakfast that has made my sodium too high. I seldom eat sausage, but I did this morning. I'm having a veggie, fruit, berry meal with cottage cheese, and milk to drink. I don't know where all the extra sodium came from. Oh well I will do better tomorrow. emoticon

After my experience (and stupidity on my part for not asking in the first place), I would suggest that each person needs to ask his/her DR just how many mgs. of sodium that they want that patient to strive for. I'm sure that each condition may require a different need for sodium and I would venture a guess that unless the person has a serious heart condition, there is definitely a "too-low" limit that one can go. Leg cramps are NOT fun when they are so severe and in both legs at the same time. I am trying hard to keep my intake where my DR suggested and I know it will take a little time to get it regulated right but already I can tell that my head is feeling better so I do believe that I was a bit dehydrated. Another blood test tomorrow and I'll see how things are going now without my water pill. Stay the course and together we'll get this figured out.

911mg for the day.

Hope that number is just a coincidence and not a bad sign, especially after reading the "too low" posts. emoticon

Lonna, tracking first is a good idea and I do that too when I am planning meals and eating at home, but we have been eating out lately, and that makes it more difficult. Now that things are back to normal, we won't be eating out as much so hopefully I can do better. 1500-1600 sounds like a good number to strive for. Today's sodium was 1452, a good start. I actually had a bad cramp this morning in my foot, and had to get up and walk it out. You are right, we can figure this out together. Thanks for the help. I did manage to keep on track these past two weeks when things were so busy and so much food and snacks were flying around. Instead of ending up gaining I actually am down nearly a pound from two weeks ago. I am really happy with myself for not gaining. emoticonemoticon

Dotti, I think that since my nephrologist said to strive for 1500-1600, that might be a pretty neutral starting point, not too low, nor in the high points. Our bodies do need salt, (and that can be a factor in leg cramps so I'm told) so I would suggest that you find a good medium point and try really hard to fall between those points. If you track your food, you can check each day to see what foods that you're eating that has the most sodium in them and either cut them out or at least way down. One thing that works for me now (and another spark friend suggested it) is to put your food in the nutritional tracker FIRST and see how it figures BEFORE you eat it. You may need to just cut down the amount that you eat without giving it up totally! I have found that I can do that with more foods than I thought possible and I track my food religiously. You'll find your medium; I just know that you will and right now, you, like me, may have tried to cut out too much salt, which isn't good either. Nor is going from one end of the spectrum to the other. Together, we will get this figured out and we'll both be better off. Let me know how this works for you - let's keep in touch daily so that we can get this regulated and we'll both feel better. Oh, by the way, since my DR stopped my water pill, my little 'head twinges' have all but stopped so I honestly do think between that pill and cutting out too much salt, even tho I was drinking a lot of water, I was dehydrating. Who would have thought!!!

I hadn't realized you could be to low either, until we started tracking and concentrating on sodium intake. Probably the right amount is different for every one. It's good that you talked to the doctor Lonna. My legs have been trying to cramp during the night, but I caught it and worked it out before I actually went into a cramp. Maybe I shouldn't try to keep my intake to low. Just try not to go over what they recommend. What do you think? My sodium for yesterday was 1058 and today it was 2046. I have been drinking at least 8 cups of water every day.

Talked to my DR on Wed. and realized that I was WAY under where I need to be and was actually dehydrating! My goal is now 1500-1600mg per day. I didn't realize that you could get too low! Maybe that's why the term is "low sodium" and not "no sodium". LOL

Had a spike in sodium intake over the weekend - snacking on things I shouldn't.

Been under 1500 M&Tu; 1594 yesterday. Had a meatless taco salad, and went a bit heavy on the cheese and olives.

700mg so far today in my plan for today - with dinner not planned yet.

Dotti, I'm so glad that things went well for the wedding. And though it's wonderful to have family visit, it's also nice when they all go home! LOL. Your sodium looks good, girl. Way to go. Mine was 1586 yesterday; my BP has gone down so much that I'm going to call my DR today and see if I can get off of at least one of my meds for HBP. I feel a bit faint sometimes and I'm sure that's what it is. I can perfectly understand about the potato chips; I have certain things that I feel that way about, too. By the way, I love your new picture and I will definitely stop by your spark page to see the wedding pics. Have a great day!

sodium today was 1596. I am still working at it. I have done unusually well this past week resisting the chips, but tonight I did have a few. We were all sitting around the table at my sons house, and every one was eating chips. I was hungry and there wasn't anything else available, so I made the decision to try just eating a few, and stopping. And I did it!emoticon I only ate an ounce or less. And believe it or not, it satisfied me. Lonna, thank you for the information, but I think I will try eating a small portion of the kind I really like, rather than a lot of something I probably wouldn't.

The wedding was so beautiful. The newlyweds have gone on their honeymoon, my niece and her family will be leaving for home tomorrow and my daughter and her family will be leaving thurs. and everything will be getting back to normal. Then I hope to get back on track with my exercising and really get this weight loss going. I didn't do to much damage over the week, just gaining less then 2 lbs. I think I will drop that quickly. I put a few wedding pictures on my spark page. Check it out!

Great job Lonna on the sodiumemoticon

Dotti, I don't know if you have this at your grocery, but I buy Mike Sell's No Salt Potato Chips because my DH and I both love chips and these have NO SALT!! They're good and crisp, just no salt. Okay, doesn't taste quite as good as the salted ones, but it still offers an opportunity to eat some chips without the guilt of too much salt. Just a thought. There may be other brands out there, also, but this is what I've found. Keep up the good work and enjoy your family while they're there AND your granddaughter's wedding!! I took an average of my sodium count for the week (7 days) and it was 1145.

Not bad quorndawg, at least you are not going over what they recommend. Like you, I am trying to stay lower then 2000, but am not as consistant as I would like to be. It sounds like you and your wife had a good time on date night. What was the concert?

Lonna, you are doing so good staying at the right level with the sodium. So many things have sodium that I don't think would. Sometimes I try tracking things before I eat them to see what the sodium amount is. That helps a little.

I have to say I am so proud of myself this week. My absolute weekness is potato chips. And they of course really do a job on me. With so much sodium, I bloat, gain and swell. I can't stop eating them once I start until the bag is empty. And this week with my daughter and family up from FL, our whole family have been gathering at our house every night for cookouts and family meals. With salads, snacks and POTATO CHIPS, etc. However, I have not and will not touch a chip. I WILL NOT TOUCH A CHIP. I PROMISE!
I even lost another pound this week by sticking with my eating plan. We all can do this together. Thank all of you for all the encouragement. emoticon

Great job, both of you!! Mine was 1542 yesterday - I'm doing a better job of keeping it at a medium point instead of going too far down as I was before. Too little for too many days and I get leg cramps; too much and my feet and legs swell so it's important for me to reach that "point" and stay there. Keep up the good work, you two!!

Thanks Lonna, I hadn't thought about it being possible to get to low on the salt intake until you mentioned it. Thanks for the advice. Also thank you for the lovely comments you made on my sparkpage about my paintings. You are right, together, we will conquer this. I have been following all the advice I have received lately. And I think it is beginning to pay off. I believe I have finally broken through the plateau. This week I have lost another 1 and 1/2 lbs. For so many months, I was stationary or went up and down 2-3 lbs. emoticon GOING DOWN----emoticon

Have raised my sodium level just a little - around 1500 a day - and my leg cramps are gone. I am taking the potassium pill, also prescribed for me and I'm feeling so much better. I do think that, for me, I was way to low as to where I needed to be. Each of us have our own levels to reach and maintain and I clearly have found mine. Yes, I agree, it is a struggle and I'm sure there is no positive way that each kernal of salt can be accounted for that we consume, but just keep doing the best that you can and you'll come pretty close to your actual count. Don't give up - some days will be harder than others but together, we'll go for the overall best. Good work!!

I am not sure this is completely accurate because of the way I had to track, what I wanted wasn't in there. Anyway a little high again--sodium 2393--.

Just think I went too far in cutting my sodium; I had been down below 1000mg a day for several days and just had a really bad bout of leg cramps which I have discovered can be due to low sodium in the diet. I'm going to try to keep my intake around 1500 - 1800 for a while and see if that helps. I guess you can overdo a good thing, too! emoticon

I'm Lonna and I live in northeastern Indiana.

The best way to have a good day is by choosing to.

There now I am back on track--1509 sodium--I felt terrible for those days I went so far over and showed a quick 6 lb weight gain. I think it was caused by to much salt with all the chips, because otherwise I really didn't do to badly. We will see now that I am back to my low calorie, low salt diet. I feel much better already!!emoticon

A little better today, but stll over. 2463, I've got to get control of the chips. No more potato chips, no more potato chips, no more potato chips! Lately every where I go, there they are. Today I had company come and they brought them for us to snack on. That's no excuse of course, because I know better!!! It's nobodys fault but my ownemoticon

Wow I am not doing so good. 2973 sodium, another bad day. It was those potato chips again. I just don't have any will power when they are within reach!
Now you know why I never buy them. And why picnics and cookouts do me in. I WILL DO BETTER!

Made it through dinner and have yet to crack 1000 yet. 4th day on my trek to cut my sodium. Seems to be working so far. Cooking my own meals vs. store bought really affords the opportunity to slash my intake without cutting flavor

I stayed down to 1673 mg, not to bad. Getting better, I must keep vigilant. How can you figure it when you make soup homemade, using canned items? Would you have to figure out what is in each item as you put it in. That isn't always easy. Sometimes I have to just come as close as I can with what is listed. Today I tried two different soups as close as I could come to Tomato, macaroni, beef soup. There was a big difference in the amount of salt. I took the lesser one, because I tried to make it with low sodium products. I used low sodium diced tomatoes, low sodium chicken broth and wheat pasta. I also served it with a "hint of salt" crackers.

Today's challenge is to keep your sodium levels in check. Too much sodium in a diet can increase blood pressure, slow down weight loss and retain excess water (i.e. bloating). Try to keep sodium under 2000 mg today or at least at the recommended ADA levels of 2300 mg per day.

Have a great day!
