I made a wonderful beef soup the other day using Victorian Epicure Beef Boullian base and their Oven Roast seasoning. There was 136 cal per serving, 2.8 fat, 157 sodium, 6.7 carbs, 2.8 fiber, and 15 protein. A lot of their goods are low in sodium. Unfortunately the seasoning I used is no longer on their website so I don't know if I'll be able to get more. There was so much flavor it was great.

I get it in Stop and Shop here. I know you can find it on-line - google of all the offers there find the one under Amazon's name. I know from experience they seem to sponsor the most reliable. Meri

Wish I could find low sodium cottage cheese. Wal-Mart here doesn't have it. No place I've looked does, not even the "health food" stores.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I think it holds true for many hospital situations. At least you are aware and well-educated so you can take steps to deal with the situation. And you brought it to their attention, good for you!

this is the opposite of a low-sodium food find. I was appalled at the food that was served in the hospital during my recent stay! I know the cafeterias have all be outsourced but really!!! The cafeterias themselves are now like shopping mall food courts and Sunnybrook Hospital has one with a Pizza Pizza, the Pita Hut, 2nd Cup coffee, Swiss Chalet Chicken, etc. The food the patients get is horrible. It's all trucked in. They ordered me a Heart Healthy as well as a Diabetic menu - you get no choices yourself. One day, I was served a turkey sandwich made with deli turkey meat and chicken broth - I figure it was at least 1800 mg of sodium in those 2 items alone. When I asked about that I was told that Heart Healthy you see so much of nowadays here in Canada only means low in fat and low in cholesterol. I was told that if a Dr. wanted you to have low sodium it had to be a low-sodium diet which is NO salt. No happy medium. After spending about 10 days in my local hospital last January, I went prepared and had a grocery bag of non perishable goods with me to substitute when I was given unpalatable or unsuitable foods. I will admit I don't always make the best choices when it comes to sodium - who does all the time? But, it's my choice not my only choice.

I guess most of you already know about this. But if you rinse anything that is canned, you can reduce the sodium by 40%.

I get recipes from Kraft Canada all the time and recently they sent an e-mail with one I found interesting - Slow Cooker French Onion Soup. I love French Onion Soup and have missed not having it because it has so much sodium in it. I reviewed Kraft's recipe however and saw that their version was about 580 gr per 1 cup bowl. I have a dry mix to make Bullion that is very low in sodium and I substituted that for their Kraft Low Sodium Bullion and diet ginger ale in place of either beer or non-alcoholic beer. If I've done my calculations right (math is not my thing) my version got down to (per bowl) 139 cal, 4 gr fat, 195 gr sodium, 21 carbs, 3 of which we can discount because they are fibre, and 3 gr of protein. And it turned out good! It was a bit on the sweet side so next time I might just use water instead of ginger ale - and, that will lower the sodium even more.

Newest find: Kettle Brand Unsalted Potato Chips

They're not quite the same without salt, and that keeps me from eating too many. They are thick and crunchy. Suppose you could add a tiny dash of salt if you wanted.

I found a recipe last night but forgot to write down where it came from! Crock Pot Chronicles? Anyway, I wrote out the recipe and made it this morning and we had it for lunch. considering the average can of low sodium soup has approx, 400-500 mg of sodium, this soup at 171 mg per serving is quite low. It was wonderful. I made a few changes to the recipe and this is what I ended up with:

Real Tomato Soup

Ingredients
1 can Accent Diced Tomatoes with Onion and Green Pepper (16 oz)
1/2 c water
1/2 c chopped onion
1/2 c chopped celery
1 6-oz can tomato paste
1 tbs dried parsley
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp Stevia
2 dashes Worchestershire Sauce
fresh parsley (optional)

Nutritional Info per serving -
Fat: 6.0g
Carbohydrates: 18.6g
Calories: 99.2
Protein: 4.6g
Sodium: 171mg
Fiber: 4

1. If desired, seed the tomatoes.
2. In a large saucepan combine ingredients
3. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, covered about 20 mins or until celery and onions are very tender. Cool mixture slightly.
4. Place 1/3 mixture in a blender container. Cover and blend until smooth. Repeat with rest of mixture.

I was on Mrs. Dashed web site yesterday and they now have salad dressings and season packets for chilli, beef stew ETC. I had not been aware of them. We are in a smaller town but do have a Walmart so will check this out next shopping trip. Not one for Spaghetti which would be helpful. I love my pasta.

I have totally given up on breads and bagels, and just go with the Nabisco Hint of Salt Wheat Thins and Triscuits. Swiss cheese is almost always much lower in sodium than any of the other cheeses.

Bottled salad dressings to take to potlucks with a salad require careful checking, though. Recently I have been using Annie's Naturals Lite Raspberry Vinaigrette. A friend has irritable bowel syndrome and can't tolerate seeds, but this seems to be smooth enough. The sodium is 55 mg per 2 Tbsp, which is pretty low compared to most bottled dressings.

I don't think I've already put this forward - if I have - please forgive my bad memory! My DD talked me into going to an Epicure party one night. A company in British Columbia has come up with a whole line of spices, dip mixes, consume starters, condiments, and I can't remember what all. The majority of their foods are very low in sodium. The only complaint I have so far in using their products is that they suggest using way more than is needed to make something - the mixes, etc. if the directions are followed are way too strong and my daughter and I find we only need about half for most things. Their items are sold at parties like Tupperware and Pampered Chef but you can also order online. For eg, their beef bouillon base has only 60 mg of sodium per cup, their beef and steak seasoning has 5 mg of sodium per tsp, and their oven roast seasoning has no sodium. Their website is http://www.epicureselections.com/en/produc
ts/food/

Well I think I am going to start asking the Aldi's manager to get in more Fit and Active foods in. They are pretty good about the sodium and fat .

I will have to go check to see what low sodium products Wal mart has. Its really close to us.

GREEN 1950 - just checked my Orowheat sandwich thins, I had in my freezer and the sodium is 170 for each sandwich thin. I found Sara Lee WW Bread for 45 cal per slice and 85mg of sodium, comes out to about the same for two slices, but the slices are bigger. Just a thought.

I buy the lower sodium Bagel Thins at Wal-Mart. Also buy lower -sodium bagels made by Western Advantage (I think, will have to research that next time I go) I also buy these at Wal-Mart. The manager sees me coming and says "what do you want me to order next?" LOL He did tell me that he was very surprised to see the no-sodium foods that I requested selling better than he ever thought possible. Now he is trying to get more products that have no sodium, or lower sodium. In the deli, he has ordered the lower sodium ham, turkey and roast beef. He told me they are selling out. So we are not alone.

Glad it worked. Don't have a Sprouts here but you get some good stuff there. Still trying to find lower sodium Bagel thins here. Do I have it wrong? Is it sandwich thins I am supposed to be looking for. Will have to look back. I could swear I saw someone on the thread mention Bagel thins. We love an occasional 1/2 bagel with reduced fat cream cheese for breakfast or my late snack as a diabetic type 2 but they sure are high calorie and have a bit more sodium than I'd like too.

Thanks Bev I'll give a look out for the Sara Lee. I didn't realize they made bread too.
I have found that the brand Organic Valley has several lowered sodium cheeses that are around 170 mgs for a serving. The sizes of serving differ. That's pretty good for cheeses. They have them at Jewel Osco and Tony's Finer Foods here in Chicago but they have a site you can go on to see if they have it in stores where you live, you just enter your zip code. It's
www.organicvalley.coop/ Click on the products link at the top and choose your product then at the bottom of the page is a store locator where they will tell you who sells their products in your area.

Lin, the next time you go to COSTCO, check out (if they have it) The ECO Drink, has ALL vitamins needed and NO SODIUM. My nail grow fantastic and my nails usually split/chip,but as long as I drink this I am fine. It comes with its own 16 oz bottle, you just add water to the packet, but I found it was too strong for me, so I mix it in a 32 oz bottle of water with lots of ice and I get my water and vitamins at the same time. Potassium and less sodium work hand in hand. So you will need at least 3500 mg of potassium to 1500 mg of sodium a day. If they don't have ECO drink, ask your COSTCO manager to order it for you. Have a great day. Bev

One packet, has NO, CALORIES, SUGAR, CARB, SODIUM or FAT. Has 100% Vit, A, C, D, E, B12, B7 and I could go on and on. It has 31 antioxidants. I feel good when I use this product.

Bev - I was in our Loblaws Superstore yesterday and I went down the pasta aisle. We are encouraged to buy products with the label "Blue Menu" as being heart healthy and such. They really are no better according to the nutritional information on the backs or sides of packaging I've found. It was the Blue Menu Whole Grain pasta that had the salt - 50 mg. per serving. When I looked at all of the packages of white, whole wheat and whole grain for spaghetti, macaroni, and shell pasta, only the Blue Menu ones had salt. The others had either 1 mg per serving or none. We should have looked more closely. Our stores are getting more and more sugar free and low salt items but nowhere near what's available in the States. Even if we go to Costco and to Walmart which are American, they offer what other Canadian stores have. A problem I find here is that if they lower the sugar, they up the fat and/or the salt, and if they lower the fat, up the sugar and salt, and if they lower the salt, up the sugar and fat. I love Jello, and it's great for my nails. I switched to the sugar-free with a lot fewer flavour choices as soon as I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I've pretty much had to discontinue altogether now because the salt content is so high in the ones available here (65 mg for a 1/8 of a pkg serving). There is definitely one brand of tomatoes with no salt added (just what's in the tomatoes), maybe 2 but I don't think there is one for tomato sauce or paste here. A lot of the soups now have 1/2 the salt they used to but they've added about 600 mg. of potassium to make up for it and even at 1/2 for the salt, it's about 1/2 my daily allowance just for a 1 cup bowl of soup - not worth it. A lot of the so called "diet" packages of pre-prepared meals that are low in carbs and/or fat are very very high in salt - most of them are more than I can have in a single day. We keep checking labels and honing in on anything unfamiliar on the shelves that may be low in everything. When I go to the States, I stock up in lots of grocery items.

I have food 4 less here, and most of my sodium free foods I can get at Wal-Mart. I do have Trader Joe's (which I stopped shopping in because they have had many of their foods recalled because they come from other countries and the FDA doesn't approve them), But I do go to Whole "paycheck" foods. Kacey,

I just found Sara Lee WW Bread with 45 cal per slice and 90 mg of sodium per slice. So if you make a sandwich, both slices would come up to one slice of regular bread. Let me check my milk, my milk is the Almond Breeze unsweetened but the sod is 160 per 8 oz glass. BUT, I did find, FF Sour Cream 2 T 20 cal, and 40 of sodium. It is called Naturally yours and the container is black and white like a cow. It is awesome. My son cannot tell the difference and he is fussy. Bev

Kroger has no salt added Diced Tomatoes with 15mg of sodium per half cup. They also have Kroger brand at Food 4 Less.

Thanks Bev I'll look for the thin sandwich there then. Do they sell the bagel thins there as well? and are they both low sodium? I take it there is no Strack and Van Til's where you are ? I'm going looking in Walmart and Trader Joe's next so I will let you know

Has anyone ever found a low in sodium skim or fat free milk? If you have please please tell me the brand and where you buy it!

I found two in Chicago Creamo natural creamy peanut butter at Tony's Finer Foods (Centrella chain) And low sodium colby jack cheese and mozzarella string cheese low sodium at Strack and Van Til Market. Its hard to find low sodium cheese as salt is used in the making of it.

I have not been able to find stores in Chicago that sell Bagel thins or Boar's Head lower sodium roast beef. Can anyone point me to a chain store like whole foods traderjoes or something else that sells it?

thanks Bev - I haven't heard of half of those so I'll keep looking. We were going to try to whole grain pastas until I read the label - too much salt for me. You have to be so careful - they pump up one nutrient to make up for removing another - get you coming or going.

SPROUTS has lots of no-sodium foods. I found their brand of Marinara Sauce that has no salt at all added. It is really very good, I add mushrooms and onions and some red wine. Pasta has no sodium. Just ask your store manager and he will order them for you. That is what I do. Orowheat made a low-sodium bread, I bought all they had in the store and now cannot find it. I plan on writing them to find out why they pulled it, or which stores are carrying it. Sara Lee has a bread that has only 45 mg of sodium per slice and I get that when I go shopping. Hope that helps.

Bev - you have quite a number of things. We get more and more no-salt items here in Canada but some of them are pretty bad, lol. I can get a Heinz Ketchup that isn't too bad tasting and some stewed tomatoes and canned tuna but I haven't seen tomato paste or sauce that's that low in sodium. I'm diabetic too and was using a lot of the sugar free jellos until I realized they are packed with salt yet the regular has non - geez!

I am new to this team, but on low-sodium for some time. Here are my finds:
I live in No CA so my stores might be different;

Hunts No Salt Ketchup- Wal-Mart
Hunts No Salt diced canned tomatoes - Wal-Mart
Hunts No Salt tomato paste - Wal-Mart
Hunts No Salt tomato sauce - Wal-Mart
COSTCO Organic No-Salt Seasoning. Has 21 different herbs NO SALT- I believe Trader Joe also carries this. I season everything with this product, and it is really awesome
Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat bread 1 slice 45 Calories 85 mg of salt - Wal-Mart
SPROUTS Marinara Sauce - NO Sodium
STARKIST Single Serve Tuna in a pouch (no water) 80 cal, 50 mg of sodium - Wal-Mart ( with a T of Best Foods light mayo, lots of chopped celery, red onions, very filling)

I take forever grocery shopping, because I check every label. I am going to a Pot Luck tonight and I bring my own Ketchup, and 21-no salt seasoning. I am bringing a salad with my own Olive oil and Balsamic vinegar w/21 seasoning in a small jar. PS. everyone uses my things LOL I could go on and on, but I will stop for now. Bev

I've been using spices, spice mixes, salad dressing mixes, consumes, etc. by Victorian Epicure, a company started in British Columbia - www.epicureselections.com. Almost all of their products are low in sodium and are great in recipes.
Minced Garlic - 4mg/15 ml; cheese, Chives & Bacon Dip - 70 mg/15 mg; and 3 Onion dip Mix - 4 mg/.15 ml - I use the mixes not as a mix so much as a spice combo - if using for a mix, I find them twice as strong as they need to be - more bang for your buck
Chicken Bouillon Base - 100 mg/7.5 ml or 3.3 gr; and Beef Bouillon Base - 60 mg/7.5 ml or 4.3 gr (7.5 ml is a heaping tsp - add to 1 cup of boiling water)
This isn't sold in the grocery store but on-line or in a party situation like Pampered Chef and/or Tupperware.

0 sodium cereal does not always taste that great - shredded wheat comes to mind - but I add berries to it and strawberry/banana or mixed berry Silk to it. Makes it taste good and still keeps the sodium intake low.

I just started checking out this forum- lots of mentions about Mrs Dash, which is a great product- that is how I started out when needing to reduce sodium. But if you check out Pensy's Spices, either online or many cities have the stores- you will find many salt free blends! They are wonderful. Mural of Flavor is my go-to for eggs, veggies and salads. Also for salad dressings, Paul Newman had an olive oil and vinegar which is very good 150 mg per serving. Another thing I just found is barbeque sauce which can be very high in sodium. Guy Fieri makes a bourbon and brown sugar variety for 125 mg per 2 tbs, which is good. you still have to measure to ensure you are not pouring too much on your food!

GrahamCracker, I think I want to clarify my earlier answer a bit. When I first read the comment about 0 sodium in the cereal not being "good," I initially thought that by "good" you meant "healthy," not how it would taste. I confess that I have never been a very picky eater (although I decided long ago that I do not like anchovies!). But for me, the term "good," as applied to food, has increasingly come to mean whether it's good for one's health. Whether one likes a flavor is an acquired habit that is not really very important to me when health is in the balance. Therefore, to me, something nutritious with 0 sodium is good, indeed.

I'd forgotten I'd bought this, discovered it in the pantry behind some other things, and just noticed that it lists 0 mg of sodium per Tablespoon. It is Fischer & Wieser's Charred Pineapple Bourbon Sauce, made in Texas. I have not yet tried it.

Jennie-o turkey breast I found in a 20-oz package in my grocery store's meat department. According to the label, it has only 75 mg of sodium per 4 oz serving.

So, yesterday I remembered to check at my grocery store for the Mrs Dash spicy teriyaki marinade. They did have a Mrs Dash marinade, but only garlic and herb flavored. I'll try to remember to check next time I'm at their other store; it's a little larger, and sometimes has items that aren't in the smaller one.

Yeah I like that the store near me has roasted unsalted in the bulk bins. I don't care for the taste of raw almonds.

Hello!

My snack craving lends itself to salty chips/fries

My Great Find is Whole Almonds that you get in the 9oz cans.

Whole Natural Almonds:
1/4C = 160 cal Sod 0 120 fat cal Total fat 14g Sat fat 1g 0 Trans fat 0 Chol 6g carb
3g fiber 1g Sug Prot 6g

Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts (Kroger):
1/4C = 160 cal Sod 60mg 130 fat cal Total fat 14g Sat 2g Trans 0 Poly 3.5g Mono 7g
Chol 0 Pot 170mg Total carb 6g Fiber 2g Sug 1g Prot 6g

Slowly enjoying them seems to take as long as working a bag of chips (anysize) smh...
They work for putting the kabash on that craving!

Quaker Oats has plain salt free rice cakes with 0 sodium, 35 calories and 7 carbs per cake. I feel that even if I eat five of them (a lot but I could easily eat the whole bag) it's better than a better snack than bag of cheetos.

GEMINIGEM6 - wow that's good for flour tortillas. I've had to switch to corn tortilla for my soft tacos to avoid the sodium (2 tortillas = 15mg sodium). I'll have to give it a try.

I make a mixture of amy's low sodium refried beans and brown rice with a little tobasco, chili powder, and cilantro, and roll it into 3 tortillas. Meal comes out to about 250mg. My goal per meal is 300

Sargento makes Baby Swiss Cheese slices that only have 35mg of sod, and then I found some whole wheat tortillas from La Banderita that only have 80 cals, 2.5 grams of fat, 13 carbs, and 150mg of sodium for TWO tortillas!! So you can have just one and cut all those values in half. I also found some Dark Chocolate Almond spread from MaraNatha that only has 15mg of sod for 2 tbsp! I got all of these products at Wal-Mart. :) Also, a good tip is to take reg stuff and just use half of a serving. I do that w/ dijonnaise....I use half a teaspoon instead of a whole one, etc etc.

GrahamCracker: Don't worry about getting too little sodium! You are never going to get to a 0-sodium diet, because, as you will quickly discover as you track your food, there is sodium in foods naturally, and then there are very high levels of sodium that are added in almost ALL the foods we buy! Check those labels. You can re-train your taste levels to where salty things taste disgusting. And herbal seasonings can taste delightful! Pepper works well on many things instead of salt.

You are correct that most cheese is loaded with salt; Swiss cheese is often lower.

Hello I am new to this board/team.

JNXCHICKORY I will try the Kashi cereal you mentioned, but it's hard for me to believe 0 sodium is good. Thanks for the tip, though.

SOUTHERNMESS I don't care for the Ezekiel bread either. Sometimes things that are good for us aren't good.

What a struggle lowering sodium. I love cheese and dairy and need those servings as I have osteopina in my spine. I also take calcium with Vit D. That and the estrogen have stopped the bone loss for now. (however, the estrogen hinders weight loss).

Good point about the getting used to the low salt diet....our taste buds do adjust. I've been stumbling and falling off the wagon a lot lately. I will wait to try them after I am back on track. Thanks~

Western Beef in Brooklyn, New York has low salt Swiss and low salt American cheese. I'm still searching for low salt Colby. Is there such a thing as no-salt cheese? emoticon

Thanks, and yes I saw that. I just got back from shopping, luckily the store wasn't too crowded and I could take my time reading labels. LOFL

I saw a cabbage soup recipe somewhere, have to check and see if I printed it out. Sounded good, I got the lower sodium tomatoe juice, some peanut butter spread ( All Natural Peanut Wonder Low Sodium ) the one I have has 240 mg, and this only has 95 mg. I like peanut butter on my toast, also got some different margarine.

Have a good evening, going to see if I printed out that cabbage soup recipe, will make tomorrow.

Oh, and I probably should have mentioned that there's a button at the lower right of the Nutrition Tracker where you can click to see Today's Full Report. There you can see where your nutrients came from. That's what I use when I think to myself, "How did I get that much sodium?"

Thank you, and I too am going to enter my own foods. I added sodium to my chart, It is surprising how much sodium is in certain foods. 1 slice of baked ham is almost my limit for the day. :( No more ham for me.....

Just had company, people are so supportive since my husband of 62 years passed on. Still checking up on me. Makes me feel good.

I work our church food bank 2 mornings a week. Have been redoing some things around the house to make it look more like me. We have one wonderful, caring Son that does a lot for me, cutting and edging the grass, anything I can't do, it does.

Talk more later, I have to go to the store and look at labels. :)

HI! So glad you're here!

My personal method is that I have developed my "Favorites" food list on the SparkPeople Nutrition Plan page. Personally, I do not use their diet because they don't offer a low-sodium option. I am a busy person with volunteer work and involved in lots of activities, so I do eat, for example, Atkins Meal Bars, and Slim-Fast Shakes. When I do a food search, I have found that many, if not most, of the foods entered by other members contain information that differs from what I find on packages, so I usually save myself time by just entering my new food rather than searching for it. Fresh fruits and veggies, though, are already in the SparkPeople database, and you can add them to your favorites. I track my food as soon as I can, so I don't forget and leave things out. You get a point for each food you track, up to 15.

If you scroll down a little on the Nutrition tracking page, you can see a chart of your nutrients for the week. You can edit the list to delete or add nutrients you wish to track. And at the end of the day, you can run the Nutrition Report by clicking the button under the day's date. This report gives you graphs of each item for a week. You'll get a point for running the report.

I really love keeping track of my SparkPoints, and really use my SparkPoints page as my Start page. I work to average at least 40 SparkPoints per day on a weekly basis. You can use your points to "buy" virtual goodies for your friends, so that makes it fun.

Hope this is helpful,
Nancy
