$4 a pound for fresh turkey is ridiculous! Most stores do only stock the fresh turkeys around the holidays, but the price is not too bad--usually about 30 cents a pound higher than the frozen birds. I buy an extra one and pop it in the freezer till I'm ready to use it.

I phoned a turkey farm at Thanksgiving, they wanted over $4.00/lb for a fresh turkey!!!!! I did find one in a supermarket at a lot lower price, but I think they only stock them around the holidays.

Hi Melissa,
Thanks for the good wishes. It definitely can be a challenge but well worth the effort!

The only turkeys I've ever found without the injected solution are the fresh ones, which are not as readily available and are more expensive. Just make sure you read the label since all brands are NOT created equal.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Congratulations SHERRY0709! It's great to have your sodium levels in control and sometimes a difficult task!

On the subject of poultry. I've been looking for turkey without the injected solution of salt. Any ideas?

Thanks and good health,
Melissa

Label reading - our best friend. Otherwise, we don't know WHAT they have sneaked in even "natural" foods! Couldn't believe how much sodium is in chicken and even in fresh pork loin until I actually read the labels. Now shopping takes longer, but we're keeping our blood pressure under control and I'm having fewer spells with my Meniere's.

i really dont know why they have inject meat poultry etc at all..some of us will season for ourselves..others like me use no salt..they should consider this..maybe its a form of preservative? as far as those healthy soups with the green labels the sodium is lower than in a soup that says reduced sodium.yuk i can just taste the salt writing this..

I was appalled at the sodium content of a roasting chicken that was on special, I ended up paying double for a lower sodium brand, I think it was perdue that was the lower one.

Not injected with anything, and not feed any steroids either. Lucky you.

I always liked moose but never cared for venison. Now I don't get either.

I agree they do need to be a little more upfront about the supposedly low sodium - what a crock. Didn't know about the meat. Will have to check that out although the moose in my freezer has not been injected with anything - yippee!

Sorry your throat is not feeling good. Hope you feel better soon!

Hopefully, one day there will be as much concern with sodium as there is with fats, carbs, sugar, etc. As sodium related health issues is a growing concern in society, just the restaurants, manufacturers, etc. don't care to do much about it yet.

Every meat I pick up to use in the kitchen, I analyze the sodium content. But, I also don't look just at the content, I also look at the serving size too. I love how some of them claim low in sodium or fat or whatever the case may be, then you look at the serving size and it is not a normal size, it is extremely small!

The heart healthy soups from Campbells are doing pretty good on some of the sodium counts, though have looked at other brands and what they call low in sodium, I call a dizzy/edema episode waiting to happen. Some companies are getting their acts together and trying to be healthier, hopefully others will follow suit so we don't have to be investigators hot on the trail of low sodium products. I know I spend twice the time I used to in the store checking out all the items just to make sure I have the one with the lowest possible sodium in it.

Feel better!

I'm seriously behind here, thanks to the games on Facebook emoticon

Made a special trip to Kroger the other night to get some boneless chicken breast on sale. I didn't look over it, I know most meats are going to be injected w/sodium these days, sadly.
I cooked some tonight, and good heavens! That was 3 hours ago, and my mouth/throat still feel like salted jerky. I wish I hadn't thrown the packaging away, I think it was Ammick or something like that.

I also looked over the soup while I was there. Campbell's has some that say 'lower sodium' now, but..the ones that say 'healthy heart' or something like that are actually even lower.

Honestly, they just shouldn't make it this difficult.
