I've heard of certain brands helping with acne, but don't know what happens when they're stopped. It seems logical, since the pills are a matter of adjusting and controlling hormones, that acne could result. I know my daughter hasn't had problems with it, but we're all unique biologically... Did you ask your GYN about it? Maybe there's something they can do or prescribe to ease your transition off the pills.

Yeah, I don't seem to have problems with cramps and I've been on the pill for quite a few years now. However, I tried stopping last year because my hussband and I were thinking about having kids and my face broke out terribly! I looked like an ad for Pro Activ! I jumped right back on it and I'm afraid to stop again. Anyone else have this problem??

Well, don't know if anyone still looks at this topic, but I thought I'd better update it anyway.

This month has been my first cycle since stopping my pills, and I was wholly suprised by the difference. With the pills, I had 3-4 days of painful cramps before my cycle would start. This month, my cycle came by surprise, because I had no cramps prior to it starting! It was so nice not to be in such pain!

Thank you again for everyone's great tips and for letting me vent on an ordinarily mum subject.

Thanks for all the great replies.

My unit did a sports day for our 4th of July. There was volleyball, basketball, and several running events. My shop was in charge of the basketball games, so I wound up being a scorekeeper. I had a friend helping out though, so I could take breaks when the noise started getting too distracting and so I could get some of the BBQ.

Always be unique. One person's weird may be another's idea of a good time.

I know this is way after the fact, but last summer, after being on birth control pills for several months, I went to my doc bc my cramps were crazy painful, and I'd figured that they should've evened out by then. Anyway, she actually gave me a higher prescript for them, because she was guessing that I was still ovulating. It's been almost a year since I switched, and my cramps are nothing, it's fabulous! I know the baby deal isn't an issue now that your hubby's been snipped, but you may be having a similar experience to what I've had. It's definitely great that you're near your goal weight, though, so the weight isn't an issue, because it seems like not many women know that being overweight can really affect how well your bc works (negatively).

Anyway, it was nice to meet you! :)

That's always a good idea - to take a break from it all and let your body get back into whatever its "natural" rhythm is. Strange, isn't it, how very unique and individual we all are physically? My daughter recently switched to YAZ, and is very satisfied with it, with no bothersome side effects.

TheBlueGirl: Sorry it took so long to reply, but I appreciate the suggestion.

I think what I'm going to do is take a break from all BC for a while and let my body regulate itself and see how things work out.

Hi! I'm new but I recently had a discussion about cramps with my sister, a nurse. She started taking bcps at 15 for the cramps. She's tried a few different pills - most recently YAZ. She found that although YAZ did a better job with her emotional symptoms, her physical symptoms got worse. So you may not just want to look at dosage but the type of pill too.

Thank you for your suggestion, I'll be sure to keep it in mind when it's time to get a new prescription.

Heather, maybe you could try a really low-dose pill, one with enough hormones to regulate your cycle (YEAH!), but the side effects would be minimal. After my (now ex-) husband got a vasectomy, I continued with my BC pills because they helped so much to relieve my irregular and heavy periods. Since your DH's vasectomy has made getting pregnant no longer a concern, you'd be able to experiment with dosages/brands without worry (either working it out while you're in Iraq, or waiting til you get Stateside).

P.S. I think of you daily, know the sacrifices you are making for our country, and send best wishes to you and all your unit - take care emoticon

LasherTheCat: Thanks for your input, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had this happen to... I've got one more pack left on my refills and I think I'll just let the prescription run out after that... hubby got the surgery done last month so once he gets his follow ups back saying he's shooting blanks, I think I'll be much better off without them.

I think this thread is maybe too old for a response, but I did always have worse cramps when I took the pill.

Thank you for the input. I did give it some more time and have found that the cramps are much more manageable than they were when I first switched. I am definitely enjoying the predictability of my period again.

Have a wonderful day!

I don't know if bad cramps are a temporary side effect, as your body gets used to the regulated hormones; but I AM sure, if the birth control pills are working correctly, in addition to being very regular (put it on your calendar!), your period symptoms should all be lessened.

I would definitely check with the doctor. They may want you to give it another month to see if it gets better, but there are also different combinations and strengths and formulas that can be prescribed. My daughter was switched to Ortho-90, and FINALLY got some relief from periods that knocked her out at least 3-4 days a month.

Years ago, I was given birth control pills to lower my estrogen levels. Pre-cancerous lesions were found on my cervix, and estrogen promotes the development of cervical cancer. After the affected areas were cut out, I used the birth control pills, and after a year my cervix had healed (YEAH! - and I had a baby four years later).

I kept taking the pills for years, because I loved having predictable periods that were light and relatively pain-free. I hope you'll find your body will adjust or your prescription is successfully changed, so you can also enjoy these benefits!

Take care of yourself, I'm thinking of you, Elizabeth

Well I say ask the doctor that don't sound right cause as a teenager the doc gave me the pill to stop the cramps from being so bad.

I switched from Depo to the IUD last summer because my Dr holds the opinion that taking the shot for more than 3 years at a time causes calcium to start leeching from your bones. After about 6 months, the IUD slipped and became painful, not to mention that my periods had been totally unpredictable, so 2 months ago I had the IUD removed and started taking birth control pills, because another Dr (since my regular dr is in NY and I'm in Iraq) told me that the pill regulates the system. Well, things went great last month (it's nice to know when to expect my period again). This month however, my cramps and headache have been worse than they have ever been and I want to know if it is because of the pill changing my hormone levels. If this is the case, is it only a temporary side effect while my body adjusts, or is it something I should see the Dr about and possibly stop the pills over?

Thank you in advance for any advise or comments you may provide.
