Brian,

That is GREAT news. When I was working in youth ministry in college, the retreats where young people made the decision to follow Crist were very uplifting for everyone.

Thanks for the continued prayers. I am getting very excited and looking forward to the new challenges.

Keep on Keepin' on,

Phil

Hey guys,
We just finished a Youth retreat in the Mountains (East Tennessee). 2 youth accepted Jesus and 1 rededicated his life just before going off to college. God is GOOD!! Phil, I will be praying for you as the school year starts. My daughter is going into 2nd grade and my son into 5th so I know how it can be.
God Bless All,
Brian

Not currently "studying" any specific passages. I am doing a great deal of praying and reading morivational passages and quotes to prepare for the upcoming school year and my move from 5th grade to 2nd grade.

Is SPARK MEN intended to be a Christian group, or is this a Christian thread on a team that is open to all folks? I'm not trying to start a discussion, I'm just curious.

I am in the book of Numbers this month. I know that doesn't sound overly exciting. Still, God has been showing me a lot through this portion of His word.

Hey;
Just joined this group, but have some health challenges. Am fairly slender, but this doesn't mean "healthy". I still have a tiny paunch I want to get rid of. I can't do any weight-bearing exercise because my backs' broken in 3 places. I do enjoy bike-riding, but have no friends as I tend to be a loner.
Any ideas? BTW; I'm Jewish...43; 5'10" & weight 150.

Congrats on the move Phil. I admire you, I love teaching the little ones now and then, but I can't bring myself to take a full time position below 3rd grade. Good luck next year and I hope you have a blast with the little ones!!

That is great! It shows you that people care about the integrity of their child's teacher. I find that encouraging. I admire teachers who stick it out in public schools and hold strongly to their faith. Our church has an "Educator's Sunday" every September where we recognize those who teach in our schools and have a special prayer time for them. It has always been a very special day at our church.

Thank you, John. My father-in-law is methodist, but my concern is that thy boys are already 6 years old. That seems a bit "old" for a dedication ceremony, but that is the direction in which we are leaning to make this a Christ oriented service for everyone.

Hey Phil,
What is your father-in-law's religious background?
I am a Methodist. I spent some time with some non-denominational charismatic churches, the Presbyterian Church and with the southern Baptist church. My oldest son is Catholic and my youngest is Orthodox. So I have an exposure to a wide church tradition.
In the Methodist tradition, the infant baptism is more of a dedication service. Maybe you could honor your father-in-law's request by having a dedication service without the sprinkling.
I think the real question is what action would bring all parties concerned a closer personal walk with Jesus Christ. Only you and your extended family can answer that. Please bathe the decision in prayer. You have mine as you seek God's will for your life.

You are right, Phil. This will spark some debate. My understanding of Scripture is much like yours. I believe that it is the choice of the individual and not the parents. As far as doing it now and doing it later, Eph. 4 says there is ONE BAPTISM. I would let that "one" be the important one. Also, when you look at the examples of baptism in the book of Acts, you will see that in most cases there was a response before the baptism (i.e. repentance, a confession of some sort, or at times it was faith.) Six-year-olds might be there with the faith but the others might not be. I could share some more but I just don't have time. Just remember, as a father, you are responsible for the spiritual life of your family. Study the word closely and let it speak clearly to you.

Stan

OK, I have a baptism question that might spark some debate. I was always taught that baptism was an individual choice. That when you were ready to receive Jesus into your heart as your savior, then you would choose baptism to symbolize that cleansing. My wife's family have several different opinions regarding baptism. My father-in-law keeps pushing us to have teh boys "baptized" now. They are six years old, and in my opinion they are not ready to make that commitment themselves. I do not believe in multiple baptisms, and therefore, I want to wait until they are at an age when they can decide for themselves that they are ready for GOD cleansing power.

Where do you all stand on the practice of baptism. Is it something that should be done only once as an individual commitment to the LORD allowing the cleansing of Jesus? Is it OK to baptize someone when they are "not ready" and then allow them to re-commit themselves at an older more informed age?

Let me know your thoughts I am anxious to see how my guys feel.

Keep on Keepin' on,

Phil

The passage that most applies to my life and the goals that I share with you guys is from 2 Peter 1:
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

With my new eating habits, any passage about self-control really jumps out at me. Also knowing that God's power is accessible to me is encouraging. Like the Apostle Paul says, "His power is made perfect in my weakness."

With God all things are possible. Matt. 19:26

And vice versa, Brewhaha. I look back now and realize that allowing myself to get unhealthy was a spiritual problem too. Not caring for the body God gave to me was a sin. I abused myself for 20 years! I would like to have those 20 years back and see how much my life would be different if I would have just been willing to make the sacrifices then like I am now.

I came across this passage today. I really latch on to the passages from the word that speak of self-control. Sometimes it is hard for us to admit that when we lack it for any reason (temper, overeating, etc.) we are allowing ourselves to be controlled by the enemy. Read this passage and take heart!

2 Peter 2:2-8

2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
