Hey everybody
My name is Nick, I am kinda goin the other way from almost everyone else and trying to gain weight, but the problem is I have really bad allergies to food and the air so I have a hard time gaining weight and working out. I am interested in becoming a cop, but I'm at the worst fitness level possible to become a cop.
So I need to gain about 30 plbs of muscle and be able to run around the block without falling over.
Hope you don't mind I'm not here to lose weight but I think our final out come is pretty close and that is to be physically fit
Nick

BCCSTAN - it was gorgeous here as well! For the first time it seemed to be able to push past the 10 deg C barrier (50F). Ironically, I didn't ride my motorcycles at all, or go for a run (today was weights in the gym), but I enjoyed the day all the same.

Stan and Rob - congrats on the teens...I love those milestones...very encouraging. These are the times when we really feal the progress.

speaking of pizza, that's what I'm having for dinner. Kristen and I have lots to do tonight so we can hit the road tomorrow morning by 5:30am, so we figure pizza will be quick and easy. I figure if I keep it to two slices and then eat a salad I'll be fine.

and speaking of the weekend and cinco de mayo, I was kinda psyched that it fell on a Saturday this year, then my grandmothers 80th birthday party was scheduled for this weekend. Oh well, so much for cinco de mayo plans. better luck next year. by the way, as much as I'm dissappointed that I'll miss the tacos, nachos, Coronas, margaritas, margaritas and margaritas (oh, did I mention that more than once??)...I'll be happy to spend time with family that I have not seen in a while....kinda looking forward to them seeing my new profile as well.

Way to go on hitting the teens. The psychological effect (at least for me) of moving into different 10's is huge. I'm eyeing the move to the 20's like a starving man eyes a large, deep-dish meat-lovers pizza.emoticon

BCCSTAN - Congrats, and well-done on the loss! I know the feeling - I juts got into the teens myself, and although my official weigh-in isn't until Mondays, my weight this morning was 216.5, so if I can keep it up over the weekend I am looking at another couple of pounds lost this week. More importantly, I am actually feeling so much healthier than when I started, and getting a lot of comments from people at work who are noticing a difference.

I don't give a lot of importance to weighing except on Monday nights at my support group. But I got on my home scale this morning and it was at 220.0! Getting into the 2-teens is going to be very exciting. WIth scale differences I look for that officially on May 14.

Hey guys, Had a track meet tonight gearing up for our Conference meet next Tuesday. Thigs are going very well for the team. We are now 7-2 after our win tonight. Grizzly (for those of you who know him from this team) threw the shot put 48' 6" tonight which is a new school record for us. Just wanted to brag on my team and on Grizz's performance.

Keep on Keepin' on,

ANTHONY - I am doing the Okanagan Marathon in Kelowna, British Columbia (in the Okanagan Valley). It isn't until October, which gives me lots of time to train, and to continue to get down to "fighting weight". I will be doing a few 10K races to monitor my progress, the first of which is coming up in three weeks.

Well I don't know how I did it, but I did. I actually lost weight since my initial weigh-in!

I started on this site a while ago, but from all the stress of trying to get all the details of our wedding reception worked out neither me or my wife were eating very good. Horrible would be a better word actually. And exercise? Hah! (well, my job is kind of physical, but I don't ever count that) So anyway, we had the reception this past Saturday, and all went well. I was doing some stuff on the site last night and when I got up this morning I was dreading getting on the scale, since I hadn't done any weigh-ins since I started. I did it anyway, and to my suprise I actually lost four pounds! I have no idea how that happened, maybe the stress got to me or something, but now that it's all over we've both made a solid commitment to making our lives more healthy and started back at it last night with dinner. I feel really good about finding this site, and plan on working MUCH harder to get down to my goal weight from this point on!

You guys are right, I do have to continue to work on the mental aspect. I need to channel the inner anger at myself for letting me get so out of shape into the workouts instead of letting it beat all up on me and belittle my accomplishments. That's what I did last night, I really used that anger and frustration to do a great workout and i felt like I was cleansed or whatnot after I was done. It's a great feeling!!

Shaun - I read you most recent blog, glad you are feeling better and that was a good workout you used to get that "devil" out of your head..good job!

Ruetsch - I'm excited for you, you'll have a great time. Very smart to start with the 1/2 and then you can work up to the full. Wow, you're going to do a 1/2 marathon, that's huge...good luck with the training leading up to the event.

Shaun -

It sounds as if you are doing everything you can physically. Now you may have to start also focusing on your mental and psychological side. Because, as you say yourself, working harder and harder is eventually going to burn you out and leave you in a bad place. I wonder if at some point we all have to learn how to lose weight mentally as well as physically.

Hi everyone. I had an alright run today, but a bit of pain in my hip , which has me worried again about injury (I am always walking a fine line at my weight with the amount of running I am doing). I can't wait to get a little lighter so that this is not always at the back of my mind.

Ruetsch - That's great news about the Half - and I think that is smart about only going for the half. I am not doing my full until October! You are right that you can muddle through a half (it's really just like a long 10K), but not a marathon. Having said that, your peformance in the half is a good indicator of how you are doing, and if you keep up the kind of mileage you are doing then you should be able to look at a marathon by the end of the summer early fall with no problem.

SHAUN - I will just echo what NYFAN said. Take no counsel of your fears. You have already lost a phenomenal amount of weight - I still can't believe the two photos of you on your site; you look about 15 lbs younger. It is normal to fall into a bit of a rut, and it is certainly worthwhile to change things up (not just mentally - when you do the same exercise all the time your body adapts to it, and you get less and less out of the same effort - the law of diminsihing returns. When the guys playing the Spartans in "300" were working out, their trainer never gave them the same workout twice so that their bodies could never adapt - and they certainly came out looking pretty buff). And they say "a change is as good as a break'. Maybe try something different - hire a personal trainer at a local gym for a one-time weights training session, or try a new piece of equipment. The main thing is get jazzed about your progress so far and muscle through the doldrums to keep it up.

All,
I've decided to run the Buffalo Half Marathon on 27MAY07. It's only 3 hours away and a great flat course along Lake Erie. I'd run the full if I'd had known more than 4 weeks before that it was going on. I heard about it accidentally and my long runs are CLOSE to 13.1 miles so I should be able to gut it out without too much trouble. I can't gut out 26.2 miles. I haven't signed up yet OFFICIALLY, I've got to get a pass from the wife before it's a go. But between you, me, and the fence post, I'm pretty excited about it.

SHAUNH, Dude I think it’s a guy thing you’re going threw if I understand you correctly. Every guy I know does the exact same thing. It’s like we challenge ourselves and when we cannot meet the challenge we get pissed at ourselves for me it is to the point of insulting myself. I have been going threw the same thing since I started SP on March 1.

Have you ever noticed when a guy does something and upon completion they realize it’s either wrong, they could have done it better or even a more practical way. They get pissed at themselves / ourselves. Why would it be different with our weight? We also know how strong we are, how much endurance we have and how much crap we can put our bodies. Why would their be a different reaction concerning our exercise?

The sweating thing is easy I know some guys that have been exercising for such a long period of time that it takes longer for them to sweat. To me it does not make sense but, the human body does adapts and some quicker then others.

The comment you made “It's that little negative voice I wrote about a few blogs ago that is starting to creep back in, only this time it's saying that I'm wasting my time and why am I not working harder??". Really 34 pounds lighter and you’re wasting your time? It looks like what you are doing is actually successful not a waste of time.

“Am I going to end up letting this rule me and what I do everyday?” There are worst thing to be ruled by a healthy life style in opinion is not one of them.

I don't feel any sense of accomplishment really anymore when I do a 45 minute workout for example. Instead I hear myself saying "Why didn't you do 60? You could have done more" This I cannot say anything I had the same thing go off in my head and I am up to 60 min. I will tell you where I am now if you want.

It's just not healthy, which is completely ironic when you think about it. Maybe I'll end up exercising everyday until I can't hardly even walk home and then I'd finally feel like I accomplished something. It is impressive that you do this workout and then walk home I walk up the stairs and I am wiped for a couple of hours.

I just have become exhausted about worrying about it to be honest

Let’s Recap: That little voice in your head is busy cuz it is in my head too, and would be correct if you did not loose any weight at all.

It's Football Season Folks.

Hey guys, I need some help on something I've been reluctant to talk about until now. This below is what I posted on my blog today. I figured i'd bring it here and see if anyone else here has run into this issue and see if anyone has any insight to combat it.

Am I really doing enough? Have I become too obsessed with this all???

I'm slowly getting the feeling i'm not doing enough. It's starting to become quite depressing that I just have this neverending feeling that I'm not doing near enough on this program. Which makes little logical sense since I've done 51 consecutive workouts without missing any, I usually workout at least 40-45 minutes a day 5 times a week and I log all my food, read articles and participate on sparkpeople, etc. And yes I've been losing weight as you can see from my little goal thingie, in fact a decent amount of weight to date too, just over 30 pounds. But I still have this constant voice in my head that all this i'm doing just isn't good enough. That it's not even the tip of the iceberg good enough and I'm just wasting my time if i'm not going to really commit to losing this weight.

It's a constant feeling I can't shake and to be quite honest I'm getting a bit tired of it. What the heck am I supposed to do to alleviate this? Spend 3 hours a day in the gym? Eat perfectly without any reward meals ever? I think some of this may have been caused by my visit last week to my chiropractor who had some issues with too much fat in my diet, not enough protein, etc and criticized me some, which I did not expect in the least as I honestly thought I would be given a pat on the back. But I'm honestly not going to place all of the blame on him as this was ongoing even before this. It's why I increased my gym time from 10 minutes to 20 minutes, then to 30 minutes and here recently to usually 40 minutes, sometimes up to an hour. Sure it's a good thing I think that I want to do more but it's not even a feeling of "oh I need to do a little more" but more of a feeling of "look at how much more I have to go and yet i'm ONLY doing this???".

Now before anyone thinks this sounds like i'm going to give up, that's not going to happen, I just worry i'm going to let this entire thing balloon and take over my life. It just seems like this is starting to really bother me and I think i've kind of been somewhat depressed about it over the last few days, ie why I have not been blogging. Part of it also comes from the fact I know people who do actually do so much more fitness wise that it makes what I am doing seem pretty pathetic. And part of the entire depression aspect simply comes from the fact that I cannot focus on the positives of what i've done but instead continue to focus on the negatives. I don't really beat myself up about the food aspect so much as the exercise. I worry I'm getting stuck in a program that is going to stop helping, if it hasn't already. When i'm running on the elliptical machine I'm wondering why i'm not sweating more, that if i'm not sweating then I must not be doing it right.

I just have become exhaused about worrying about it to be honest. It's that little negative voice I wrote about a few blogs ago that is starting to creep back in, only this time it's saying that I'm wasting my time and why am I not working harder??". Am I going to end up letting this rule me and what I do everyday? I don't feel any sense of accomplishment really anymore when I do a 45 minute workout for example. Instead I hear myself saying "Why didn't you do 60? You could have done more" It's just not healthy, which is completely ironic when you think about it. Maybe I'll end up exercising everyday until I can't hardly even walk home and then I'd finally feel like I accomplished something..

HereamI: that was great. You didn't seem nervous at all. I was kind of thinking that you would post a picture of you and Jane on your spark page! :)

Thanks Anthony. I see you are the person that posted the tinyurl initially and thank you for that as well, that is new to me.

Jane Seymour was Dr. Quinn and much prior to that a "Bond Girl" though I may be dating myself a bit. A major babe from the day. She and her husband produced "Walk the Line." They have a new movie "Blind Dates," coming out soon. She also has a home decorating book out.

Here is the link to Glen's story on the news, Anthony posted it last week, I just moved it from the Rants/Raves thread.

Glen - I just watched this, wow, great job. Very impressive, you didn't seem nervous at all and came across as very professional and very knowledgeable. It is a shame about the fire but it was good to see you on tv.

I've got a lot of respect you for you and your fellow firefighters, thanks for all you do.

Thanks, guys.

HEREAMI, we did not lose the Daily Raves history. It has just dropped to the bottom. I enjoyed reading your rave this morning. If you would copy it and repost it here, I am sure others would like to see it too.

Hey Phil, I am a librarian, so I like to have my things in good order, but you are the king of order. In my opinion, you've done a great job of organizing this group. Just keep up the good work!

Hey! Did we loose the Daily Raves history? I was really raving loudly this morning as I shook hands with Jane Seymour. She sat and spoke with me briefly about her new book and made mention of her new movie. Touch the hand that touched the hand of Jane. She was really down to earth and every bit of beautiful. I have enjoyed watching her for many years. Oooooooyeah.

Probably my OCD and the fact that I am a teacher/coach, but I cannot stand disorganization, so I have to keep things un-cluttered. I thank each of you for your support.

Phil,
I like your idea of keeping things simple for the team. Some of the other teams are just out of control and heading in every direction. Thanks for taking the leadership seriously.
